We study the global dynamics of advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) with magnetically driven outflows. A fraction of gases in the accretion flow is accelerated into the outflows, which leads to decreasing of the mass accretion rate in the accretion flow towards the black hole. We find that the r-dependent mass accretion rate is close to a power-law one, m_dot r^s, as assumed in the advection-dominated inflow-outflow solution (ADIOS), in the outer region of the ADAF, while it deviates significantly from the power-law r-dependent accretion rate in the inner region of the ADAF. It is found that the structure of the ADAF is significantly changed in the presence of the outflows. The temperatures of the ions and electrons in the ADAF decreases in the presence of outflows, as a fraction of gravitational power released in the ADAF is tapped to accelerate the outflows.
Observations and numerical simulations have shown that outflows generally exist in the accretion process. We revisit the thermal equilibrium solutions of black hole accretion flows by including the role of outflows. Our study focuses on the comparison of the cooling rate of outflows with that of advection. Our results show that, except for the inner region, outflows can dominate over advection in a wide range of the flow, which is in good agreement with previous numerical simulations. We argue that an advection-dominated inner region together with an outflow-dominated outer region should be a …
Advection is believed to be the dominant cooling mechanism in optically thin advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAF's). When outflow is considered, however, the first impression is that advection should be of opposite sign in the inflow and the outflow, due to the opposite direction of radial motion. Then how is the energy balance achieved simultaneously? We investigate the problem in this paper, analysing the profiles of different components of advection with self-similar solutions of ADAF's in spherical coordinates ($rθϕ$). We find that for $n < 3γ/2-1$, where $n$ is the density index in …
There is a significant nonlinear correlation between the Eddington ratio (L_bol=L_Edd) and the Eddington-scaled kinetic power (L_kin=L_Edd) of jets in low luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) (Merloni & Heinz). It is believed that these low luminosity AGNs contain advection dominated accretion flows (ADAFs). We adopt the ADAF model developed by Li & Cao, in which the global dynamics of ADAFs with magnetically driven outflows is derived numerically, to explore the relation between bolometric luminosity and kinetic power of jets. We find that the observed relation, L_kin/L_Edd ~ (L_bol=L_Edd…
The composition of relativistic outflows producing gamma-ray bursts is a long standing open question. One of the main arguments in favor of magnetically dominated outflows is the absence of photospheric component in their broadband time resolved spectra, with such notable example as GRB 080916C. Here, we perform a time-resolved analysis of this burst and confirm the previous detection of an additional spectral component. We show that this subdominant component is consistent with the photosphere of ultrarelativistic baryonic outflow, deep in the coasting regime. We argue that, contrary to previ…
We present results from two long-duration GRMHD simulations of advection-dominated accretion around a non-spinning black hole. The first simulation was designed to avoid significant accumulation of magnetic flux around the black hole. This simulation was run for a time of 200,000GM/c^3 and achieved inflow equilibrium out to a radius \sim90GM/c^2. Even at this relatively large radius, the mass outflow rate \dot{M}_{out} is found to be only 60% of the net mass inflow rate \dot{M}_{BH} into the black hole. The second simulation was designed to achieve substantial magnetic flux accumulation around…
We present a model for a super-Eddington accretion disc around a magnetized neutron star taking into account advection of heat and the mass loss by the wind. The model is semi-analytical and predicts radial profiles of all basic physical characteristics of the accretion disc. The magnetospheric radius is found as an eigenvalue of the problem. When the inner disc is in radiation-pressure-dominated regime but does not reach its local Eddington limit, advection is mild, and the radius of the magnetosphere depends weakly on the accretion rate. Once approaching the local Eddington limit, the disc b…
The broad-line region (BLR) disappears in many low-luminosity AGNs, the reason of which is still controversial. The BLRs in AGNs are believed to be associated with the outflows from the accretion disks. Most of the low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) contain advection dominated accretion flows (ADAFs), which are very hot and have a positive Bernoulli parameter. ADAFs are therefore associated with strong outflows. We estimate the cooling of the outflows from the ADAFs, and find that the gases in such hot outflows always cannot be cooled efficiently by bremsstrahlung radiation. The ADAF may co-exist wi…
We consider the conditions within a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) emission region that is Poynting flux dominated. Due to the enormous magnetic energy density, relativistic electrons will cool in such a region extremely rapidly via synchrotron. As there is no known mechanism that can compete with synchrotron it must be the source of the prompt sub-MeV emission. This sets strong limits on the size and Lorentz factor of the outflow. Furthermore, synchrotron cooling is too efficient. It overproduces optical and X-ray as compared with the observations. This overproduction of low energy emission can be avo…
The composition of gamma-ray burst (GRB) ejecta is still a mystery. The standard model invokes an initially hot ``fireball'' composed of baryonic matter. Here we analyze the broad band spectra of GRB 080916C detected by the Fermi satellite. The featureless Band-spectrum of all five epochs as well as the detections of >~10 GeV photons in this burst place a strong constraint on the prompt emission radius, which is typically >~ 10^{15} cm, independent on the details of the emission process. The lack of detection of a thermal component as predicted by the baryonic models strongly suggests that a s…
Observational evidence and theoretical arguments postulate that outflows may play a significant role in the advection-dominated accretion discs (ADAFs). While the azimuthal viscosity is the main focus of most previous studies in this context, recent studies indicated that disc structure can also be affected by the radial viscosity. In this work, we incorporate these physical ingredients and the toroidal component of the magnetic field to explore their roles in the steady-state structure of ADAFs. We thereby present a set of similarity solutions where outflows contribute to the mass loss, angul…
The main aim of this paper is studying the effect of toroidal magnetic field on the structure of Advection-Dominated Accretion Flows (ADAF) in the presence of the turbulence viscosity and diffusivity due to viscosity and magnetic field respectively. We use self-similar assumption in radial direction to solve the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations for hot accretion disk. We use spherical coordinate $ (r, θ, φ) $ to solve our equation. The toroidal component of magnetic field is considered and all three components of the velocity field $ \mathbf{v}\equiv (v_{r}, v_θ, v_φ) $ are present in our w…
Using our theory for the production of relativistic outflows, we estimate the jet launching radius and the inferred mass accretion rate for 52 low-power radio-loud AGNs based on the observed jet powers. Our analysis indicates that (1) a significant fraction of the accreted energy is required to convert the accreted mass to relativistic energy particles for the production of the jets near the event horizon, (2) the jets launching radius moves radially toward the horizon as the mass accretion rate or jets power increases, and (3) no jet/outflow formation is possible beyond 44 gravitational radii…
Among a number of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that drive ionized outflows in X-rays, a low-redshift (z = 0.184) quasar, PDS 456, is long known to exhibit one of the exemplary ultra-fast outflows (UFOs). However, the physical process of acceleration mechanism is yet to be definitively constrained. In this work, we model the variations of the Fe K UFO properties in PDS 456 over many epochs in X-ray observations in the context of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion-disk winds employed in our earlier studies of similar X-ray absorbers. We applied the model to the 2013/2014 XMM-Newton/NuSTAR spec…
Winds are commonly observed in luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). A plausible model of those winds is magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) disc winds. In the case of disc winds from a thin accretion disc, isothermal or adiabatic assumption is usually adopted in such MHD models. In this work we perform two-dimensional MHD simulations implementing different thermal treatments (isothermal, adiabatic and radiative) to study their effects on winds from a thin accretion disc. We find that both the isothermal model and the adiabatic model overestimate the temperature, underestimate the power of disc winds,…
We present a study of X-ray ionization of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion-disk winds in an effort to constrain the physics underlying the highly-ionized ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) inferred by X-ray absorbers often detected in various sub-classes of Seyfert active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our primary focus is to show that magnetically-driven outflows are indeed physically plausible candidates for the observed outflows accounting for the AGN absorption properties of the present X-ray spectroscopic observations. Employing a stratified MHD wind launched across the entire AGN accretion disk, we …
We explore thermal X-ray iron line emission from the galactic X-ray binary GX 339-4 in the off state, using the models of the advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) without or with outflows. The equivalent widths of hydrogen-like and helium-like thermal iron lines are calculated with different model parameters including viscosity parameter $α$, mass accretion rate at the outer radius of the ADAF $\dot{m}_{\rm out}$ and outflow strength parameter $p$. Our calculations show that the equivalent widths of thermal iron lines emitted from the pure ADAF, i.e., the ADAF without outflows, should be …
The nonlinear dynamics of outflows driven by magnetic explosion on the surface of a compact star is investigated through special relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We adopt, as the initial equilibrium state, a spherical stellar object embedded in hydrostatic plasma which has a density $ρ(r) \propto r^{- α}$ and is threaded by a dipole magnetic field. The injection of magnetic energy at the surface of compact star breaks the equilibrium and triggers a two-component outflow. At the early evolutionary stage, the magnetic pressure increases rapidly around the stellar surface, initiating…
In standard accretion discs, outward angular momentum transfer by viscous forces is compensated by the inward motion of the accreting matter. However, the vertical structure of real accretion discs leads to meridional circulation with comparable amplitudes of poloidal velocities. Using thin-disc approximation, we consider different regimes of disc accretion with different vertical viscosity scalings. We show that, while gas-pressure-dominated discs can easily have a midplane outflow, standard thin radiation-pressure-dominated disc is normally moving inwards at all the heights. However, quasi-s…
Black holes attract gaseous material from the surrounding environment. Cosmic plasma is largely ionized and magnetized because of electric currents flowing in the highly conductive environment near black holes; the process of accretion then carries the magnetic flux onto the event horizon, $r\simeq R_+$. On the other hand, magnetic pressure acts against accretion. It can not only arrest the inflow but it can even push the plasma away from the black hole if the magnetic repulsion prevails. The black hole does not hold the magnetic field by itself. In this contribution we show an example of an e…
We present global solutions of optically thin, two-temperature black hole accretion disks incorporating magnetic fields. We assume that the πϕ-component of the Maxwell stress is proportional to the total pressure, and prescribe the radial dependence of the magnetic flux advection rate in order to complete the set of basic equations. We obtained magnetically supported (low-β) disk solutions, whose luminosity exceeds the maximum luminosity for an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), L > 0.4 α^2 L_Edd, where L_Edd is the Eddington luminosity. The accretion flow is composed of the outer ADAF…
The intracluster medium of a galaxy cluster often shows an extended quasi-spiral structure, accentuated by tangential discontinuities known as cold fronts (CFs). These discontinuities are thought to isolate between low-entropy, high-metallicity gas inside (i.e., below) the CF that was lifted from the center of the cluster by some radial factor $f_i$, and high-entropy, low-metallicity gas outside the CF that was pushed inward by a factor $f_o$. We find broad support for such a picture, by comparing the entropy and metallicity discontinuities with the respective azimuthal averages, using newly d…
Binary neutron-star mergers have long been associated with short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). This connection was confirmed with the first coincident detection of gravitational waves together with electromagnetic radiation from GW170817. The basic paradigm for short-duration GRBs includes an ultra-relativistic jet, but the low-luminosity prompt emission together with follow-up radio and X-ray observations have hinted that this picture may be different in the case of GW170817. In particular, it has been proposed that large amounts of the magnetic energy that is amplified after the merger, …
In order to study the outflows from accretion disks, we solve the set of hydrodynamic equations for accretion disks in the spherical coordinates ($rθϕ$) to obtain the explicit structure along the $θ$ direction. Using self-similar assumptions in the radial direction, we change the equations to a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) about the $θ$-coordinate, which are then solved with symmetrical boundary conditions in the equatorial plane, and the velocity field is obtained. The $α$ viscosity prescription is applied and an advective factor $f$ is used to simplify the energy equation.Th…
Semi-analytical models of disk outflows have successfully described magnetically-driven, self-confined super-Alfvénic jets from near Keplerian accretion disks. These Jet Emitting Disks are possible for high levels of disk magnetization $μ$ defined as $μ=2/β$ where beta is the usual plasma parameter. In near-equipartition JEDs, accretion is supersonic and jets carry away most of the disk angular momentum. However, these solutions prove difficult to compare with cutting edge numerical simulations, for the reason that numerical simulations show wind-like outflows but in the domain of small magnet…
We suggest a model of the advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) with magnetically driven outflows to explain hysteretic state transition observed in X-ray binaries (XRBs). The transition from a thin disk to an ADAF occurs when the mass accretion rate is below a critical value. The critical mass accretion rate for the ADAF can be estimated by equating the equilibration timescale to accretion timescale of the ADAF, which is sensitive to its radial velocity. The radial velocity of thin disks is very small, which leads to the advection of the external field in thin disks very inefficient. ADAF…
Accretion flows around black holes generally result in mass-outflows that exhibit irregular behavior quite often. Using 2D time-dependent hydrodynamical calculations, we show that the mass-outflow is unstable in the cases of thick accretion flows such as the low angular momentum accretion flow and the advection-dominated accretion flow. For the low angular momentum flow, the inward accreting matter on the equatorial plane interacts with the outflowing gas along the rotational axis and the centrifugally supported oblique shock is formed at the interface of both the flows, when the viscosity par…
In order to explain unusually high luminosity and spectral nature of ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), some of the underlying black holes are argued to be of intermediate mass, between several tens to million solar masses. Indeed, there is a long standing question of missing mass of intermediate range of black holes. However, as some ULXs are argued to be neutron stars too, often their unusual high luminosity is argued by super-Eddington accretions. Nevertheless, all the models are based on non-magnetized or weakly magnetized accretion. There are, however, evidences that magnetic fields in …
High resolution X-ray spectra of black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs) show blueshifted absorption lines from disk winds which seem to be equatorial. Winds occur in the Softer (disk-dominated) states of the outburst and are less prominent or absent in the Harder (power-law dominated) states. We use self-similar magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) accretion-ejection models to explain the disk winds in BHBs. In our models, the density at the base of the outflow from the accretion disk is not a free parameter, but is determined by solving the full set of dynamical MHD equations. Thus the physical properties of…
We present optically thin solutions for magnetized, advective disc-outflow symbiosis around black holes (BHs). The main objective is to explain the bright, hard state observations of accreting systems with stellar-mass to supermassive BHs. We include the effects of magnetic fields and radiation counterpart in entropy gradient based on the first law of thermodynamics to represent energy advection. The cooling process includes bremsstrahlung, synchrotron radiation, and inverse Comptonization process. One of our main ventures is to explain some long-standing issues of ultra-luminous X-ray sources…
We investigate the interactions of energetic hadronic particles with the media in outflows from star-forming protogalaxies. These particles undergo pion-producing interactions which can drive a heating effect in the outflow, while those advected by the outflow also transport energy beyond the galaxy, heating the circumgalactic medium. We investigate how this process evolves over the length of the outflow and calculate the corresponding heating rates in advection-dominated and diffusion-dominated cosmic ray transport regimes. In a purely diffusive transport scenario, we find the peak heating ra…
The absence of thermal instability in the high/soft state of black hole X-ray binaries, in disagreement with the standard thin disk theory, is a long-standing riddle for theoretical astronomers. We have tried to resolve this question by studying the thermal stability of a thin disk with magnetically driven winds in the $\dot{M}- Σ$ plane. It is found that disk winds can greatly decrease the disk temperature and thus help the disk become more stable at a given accretion rate. The critical accretion rate $\dot{M}_{\rm crit}$ corresponding to the thermal instability threshold is increased signifi…
We investigate the launching of jets and outflows from magnetically diffusive accretion disks. Using the PLUTO code we solve the time-dependent resistive MHD equations taking into account the disk and jet evolution simultaneously. The main question we address is which kind of disks do launch jets and which kind of disks do not? In particular, we study how the magnitude and distribution of the (turbulent) magnetic diffusivity affect mass loading and jet acceleration. We have applied a turbulent magnetic diffusivity based on α-prescription, but have also investigate examples where the scale heig…
We obtained thermal equilibrium solutions for optically thin, two-temperature black hole accretion disks incorporating magnetic fields. The main objective of this study is to explain the bright/hard state observed during the bright/slow transition of galactic black hole candidates. We assume that the energy transfer from ions to electrons occurs via Coulomb collisions. Bremsstrahlung, synchrotron, and inverse Compton scattering are considered as the radiative cooling processes. In order to complete the set of basic equations, we specify the magnetic flux advection rate. We find magnetically su…
Outflows launched from a remnant disc of compact binary merger may have essential contribution to the kilonova emission. Numerical calculations are conducted in this work to study the structure of accretion flows and outflows. By the incorporation of limited-energy advection in the hyper-accretion discs, outflows occur naturally from accretion flows due to imbalance between the viscous heating and the sum of the advective and radiative cooling. Following this spirit, we revisit the properties of the merger outflow ejecta. Our results show that around $10^{-3} \sim 10^{-1} M_\odot$ of the disc …
We solve the radiation-hydrodynamic (RHD) equations of supercritical accretion flows in the presence of radiation force and outflow by using self similar solutions. Compare with the pioneer works, in this paper we consider power-law function for mass inflow rate as $ \dot{M} \propto r^{s} $. We found that $ s = 1 $ when the radiative cooling term is included in the energy equation. Correspondingly, the effective temperature profile with respect to the radius was obtained as $ T_{\text{eff}} \varpropto r^{-1/2} $. In addition, we investigated the influence of the outflow on the dynamics of the …
We study super-Eddington accretion flows onto black holes using a global three dimensional radiation magneto-hydrodynamical simulation. We solve the time dependent radiative transfer equation for the specific intensities to accurately calculate the angular distribution of the emitted radiation. Turbulence generated by the magneto-rotational instability provides self-consistent angular momentum transfer. The simulation reaches inflow equilibrium with an accretion rate ~220L_edd/c^2 and forms a radiation driven outflow along the rotation axis. The mechanical energy flux carried by the outflow is…
Magnetically-driven non-stationary acceleration of jets in AGNs results in the leading parts of the flow been accelerated to much higher Lorentz factors than in the case of steady state acceleration with the same parameters. The higher Doppler-boosted parts of the flow may dominate the high energy emission of blazar jets. We suggest that highly variable GeV and TeV emission in blazars is produced by the faster moving leading edges of highly magnetized non-stationary ejection blobs, while the radio data trace the slower-moving bulk flow. Model predictions compare favorably with the latest Fermi…
We describe global, 3D, time-dependent, non-radiative, general-relativistic, magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accreting black holes (BHs). The simulations are designed to transport a large amount of magnetic flux to the center, more than the accreting gas can force into the BH. The excess magnetic flux remains outside the BH, impedes accretion, and leads to a magnetically arrested disc. We find powerful outflows. For a BH with spin parameter a = 0.5, the efficiency with which the accretion system generates outflowing energy in jets and winds is eta ~ 30%. For a = 0.99, we find eta ~ 140%, wh…
During its 2005 outburst, GRO J1655-40 was observed twice with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer; the second observation revealed a spectrum rich with ionized absorption lines from elements ranging from O to Ni (Miller et al. 2006a, 2008; Kallman et al. 2009), indicative of an outflow too dense and too ionized to be driven by radiation or thermal pressure. To date, this spectrum is the only definitive evidence of an ionized wind driven off the accretion disk by magnetic processes in a black hole X-ray binary. Here we present our detailed spectral analysis of the first C…
We discuss transportation and redistribution of energy and angular momentum in the magnetic connection (MC) process and Blandford-Payne (BP) process. The MC results in readjusting the interior viscous torque, and its effects are operative not only in but also beyond the MC region. The BP process is invoked to transfer the "excessive" angular momentum from an accretion disc. In addition, we derive a criterion for the interior viscous torque to resolve the puzzle of the overall equilibrium of angular momentum in disc accretion. It turns out that the BP efficiency of extracting angular momentum a…
Recent observations by the Swift satellite have revealed long-lasting ($\sim 10^2-10^5\,\mathrm{s}$), "plateau-like" X-ray afterglows in the vast majority of short gamma-ray bursts events. This has put forward the idea of a long-lived millisecond magnetar central engine being generated in a binary neutron star (BNS) merger and being responsible for the sustained energy injection over these timescales ("magnetar model"). We elaborate here on recent simulations that investigate the early evolution of such a merger remnant in general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. These simulations reveal ver…
We investigate nucleosynthesis inside the gamma-ray burst (GRB) accretion disks formed by the Type II collapsars and outflows launched from these disks. We deal with accretion disks having relatively low accretion rates: 0.001 M_sun s^{-1} <~ Mdot <~ 0.01 M_sun s^{-1} and hence they are predominantly advection dominated. We report the synthesis of several unusual nuclei like 31P, 39K, 43Sc, 35Cl and various isotopes of titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese and copper in the disk. We also confirm that isotopes of iron, cobalt, nickel, argon, calcium, sulphur and silicon get synthesized in the…
Based on no-outflow assumption, we investigate steady state, axisymmetric, optically thin accretion flows in spherical coordinates. By comparing the vertically integrated advective cooling rate with the viscous heating rate, we find that the former is generally less than 30% of the latter, which indicates that the advective cooling itself cannot balance the viscous heating. As a consequence, for radiatively inefficient flows with low accretion rates such as $\dot M \la 10^{-3} \dot M_{Edd}$, where $\dot M_{Edd}$ is the Eddington accretion rate, the viscous heating rate will be larger than the …
Time evolution of advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) around a rotating compact object is presented. The equations of time-dependent of fluid including the Coriolis force along with the centrifugal and pressure gradient forces are derived. In this research, it is assumed that angular momentum transport is due to viscous turbulence and the α-prescription is used for the kinematic coefficient of viscosity. Moreover, the general relativistic effects are neglected. In order to solve the equations, we have used a self-similar solution. The solutions show that the behaviour of the physical qua…
In accretion systems, outflows may have significant influence on the luminosity fluctuations. In this paper, following the Lyubarskii's general scheme, we revisit the power spectral density of luminosity fluctuations by taking into account the role of outflows. Our analysis is based on the assumption that the coupling between the local outflow and inflow is weak on the accretion rate fluctuations. We find that, for the inflow mass accretion rate $\dot M \propto r^{s}$, the power spectrum of flicker noise component will present a power-law distribution $p(f) \propto f^{-(1+4s/3)}$ for advection…
We implement a new semi-analytical approach to investigate radially self-similar solutions for the steady-state advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs). We employ the usual $α$-prescription for the viscosity and all the components of the energy-momentum tensor are considered. In this case, in the spherical coordinate, the problem reduces to a set of eighth-order, nonlinear differential equations with respect to the latitudinal angle $θ$. Using the Fourier expansions for all the flow quantities, we convert the governing differential equations to a large set of nonlinear algebraic equations …
We solved analytically viscous two-dimensional (2D) fluid equations for accretion and outflows in spherical polar coordinates ($r, θ, ϕ$) and obtained explicitly flow variables in $r-$ and $θ-$directions around black holes (BHs). We investigated global transonic advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) solutions in $r-$direction on an equatorial plane with using Paczyński-Wiita potential. We used radial flow variables of ADAFs with symmetric conditions on the equatorial plane, as initial values for integration in $θ-$direction. In the study of 2D disk structure, we used two-azimuthal componen…
In order to provide an explanation for the unexpected radial brightness distribution of the steady accretion discs seen in nova-like variables, Nixon & Pringle (2019) proposed that the accretion energy is redistributed outwards by means of strong, magnetically driven, surface flows. In this paper we note that the "powerful, rotating disc winds" observed in the soft states of black hole X-ray binaries, and also in the disc around a magnetized neutron star in Her X-1, have the properties of the outflows postulated by Nixon & Pringle to exist in the nova-like variable accretion discs around white…
In this paper, we study magnetized winds described by variable adiabatic index equation of state in Paczyński \& Wiita pseudo-Newtonian potential. We identify the flow solutions with the parameter space of the flow. We also confirm that the physical wind solution is the one which passes through the slow, Alfvén and fast critical points. We study the dependence of the wind solution on the Bernoulli parameter $E$ and the total angular momentum $L$. The adiabatic index, which is a function of temperature and composition, was found to be variable in all the outflow solutions. For the same values o…
