The existing thermodynamics of the cosmological horizon in de-Sitter spacetime is established in the micro-canonical ensemble, while thermodynamics of black hole horizons are established in the canonical ensemble. Generally in the ordinary thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, both of the micro-canonical and canonical ensembles yield the same equation of state for any thermodynamic system. This implies the existence of a formulation of de-Sitter thermodynamics based on the canonical ensemble. This paper reproduces the de-Sitter thermodynamics in the canonical ensemble. The procedure is as follows: We put a spherical wall at the center of de-Sitter spacetime, whose mass is negligible and perfectly reflects the Hawking radiation coming from the cosmological horizon. Then the region enclosed by the wall and horizon settles down to a thermal equilibrium state, for which the Euclidean action is evaluated and the partition function is obtained. The integration constant (subtraction term) of Euclidean action is determined to reproduce the equation of state (e.g. entropy-area law) verified already in the micro-canonical ensemble. Our de-Sitter canonical ensemble is well-defined to preserve the "thermodynamic consistency", which means that the state variables satisfy not only the four laws of thermodynamics but also the appropriate differential relations with thermodynamic functions; e.g. partial derivatives of the free energy give the entropy, pressure, and so on. The special role of cosmological constant in de-Sitter thermodynamics is also revealed.
As in the grand canonical treatment of Reissner - Nordström black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetime, the canonical ensemble formulation also shows that non-extremal black holes tend to have lower action than extremal ones. However, some small non-extremal black holes have higher action, leading to the possibility of transitions between non-extremal and extremal black holes.
We present the ${\mathscr P}(φ)_2$ model on de Sitter space in the canonical formulation. We discuss the role of the Noether theorem and we provide explicit expressions for the energy-stress tensor of the interacting model.
The properties of the covariant quantum fields on de Sitter spacetimes are investigated focusing on the isometry generators and Casimir operators in order to establish the equivalence among the covariant representations and the unitary irreducible ones of the de Sitter isometry group. For the Dirac quantum field it is shown that the spinor covariant representation, transforming the Dirac field under de Sitter isometries, is equivalent with a direct sum of two unitary irreducible representations of the $Sp(2,2)$ group, transforming alike the particle and antiparticle field operators in momentum…
The thermodynamical properties of the Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter black hole in the grand canonical ensemble are investigated using York's formalism. The black hole is enclosed in a cavity with finite radius where the temperature and electrostatic potential are fixed. The boundary conditions allow us to compute the relevant thermodynamical quantities, e.g. thermal energy, entropy and charge. The stability conditions imply that there are thermodynamically stable black hole solutions, under certain conditions. Instantons with negative heat capacity are also found.
We conjecture that, in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space, two solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation that coincide asymptotically must also coincide in the bulk. This suggests that the essential elements of holography are already present in canonical gravity. Our argument sheds light on why holography works only in gravitational theories, and also on the significance of anti-de Sitter boundary conditions.
We investigate the asymptotic structure of the three dimensional warped anti de sitter black holes in the Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend massive gravity using the canonical Hamiltonian formalism. We define the canonical asymptotic guage generators, which produce the conserved charges and the asymptotic symmetry group for the warped anti de sitter black holes. The attained symmetry group is described by a semi direct sum of a Virasoro and a KacMoody algebra. Using the Sugawara construction, we obtain a direct sum of two Virasoro algebras. We show that not only the asymptotic conserved charges sa…
We present here how the gravothermal or Antonov's instability, which was originally formulated in the microcanonical ensemble, is modified in the presence of a cosmological constant and in the canonical ensemble. In contrast to the microcanonical ensemble, there is a minimum, and not maximum, radius for which metastable states exist. In addition this critical radius is decreasing, and not increasing, with increasing cosmological constant. The minimum temperature for which metastable states exist is decreasing with increasing cosmological constant, while above some positive value of the cosmolo…
We solve Wheeler-De Witt (WDW) metric probability wave equation on the apparent horizon hypersurface of the Schwarzschild de Sitter (SdS) black hole. To do so we choose radial dependent mass function $M(r)$ for its internal regions in the presence of a dynamical massless quantum matter scalar field $ψ(r)$ and calculate canonical supper hamiltonian constraint on $t-$constant hypersurface near the horizon $r=M(r)$. In this case $M(r)$ become geometrical degrees of freedom while $ψ(r)$ is matter degrees of freedom of the apparent horizon. However our solution is obtained versus the quantum harmon…
We analyse the canonical energy of vacuum linearised gravitational fields on light cones on a de Sitter, Minkowski, and Anti de Sitter backgrounds in Bondi gauge. We derive the associated asymptotic symmetries. When $Λ>0$ the energy diverges, but a renormalised formula with well defined flux is obtained. We show that the renormalised energy in the asymptotically off-diagonal gauge coincides with the quadratisation of the generalisation of the Trautman-Bondi mass proposed in [13].
In this paper, a canonical ensemble model for the black hole quantum tunneling radiation is introduced. With this model the probability distribution function corresponding to the emission shell is calculated. Comparing with this function, the statistical significance of the quantum tunneling radiation spectrum of black holes is investigated. Moreover, by calculating the entropy of the emission shell, a discussion about the mechanism of information flowing out from the black hole is given too.
The main objective of this paper is to study thermodynamics and stability of static electrically charged Born-Infeld black holes in AdS space in D=4. The Euclidean action for the grand canonical ensemble is computed with the appropriate boundary terms. The thermodynamical quantities such as the Gibbs free energy, entropy and specific heat of the black holes are derived from it. The global stability of black holes are studied in detail by studying the free energy for various potentials. For small values of the potential, we find that there is a Hawking-Page phase transition between a BIAdS blac…
We study entropy corrections due to thermal fluctuations for asymptotically AdS black holes in the grand canonical ensemble. To leading order, these can be expressed in terms of the black hole response coefficients via fluctuation moments. We also analyze entropy corrections due to mass and charge fluctuations of R-charged black holes, and our results indicate an universality in the logarithmic corrections to charged AdS black hole entropy in various dimensions.
We consider the Hamiltonian dynamics and thermodynamics of spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes with a negative cosmological constant. We impose boundary conditions that enforce every classical solution to be an exterior region of a Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter black hole with a nondegenerate Killing horizon, with the spacelike hypersurfaces extending from the horizon bifurcation two-sphere to the asymptotically anti-de Sitter infinity. The constraints are simplified by a canonical transformation, which generalizes that given by Kuchař in the spherically symmetric vacuum Eins…
Thermodynamic potentials relevant to the micro-canonical, the canonical and the grand-canonical ensembles, associated with rotating black holes in D-dimensions, are analysed and compared. Such black holes are known to be thermodynamically unstable, but the instability is a consequence of a subtle interplay between specific heats and the moments of inertia and it manifests itself differently in the different ensembles. A simple relation between the product of the specific heat and the determinant of the moment of inertia in both the canonical and the grand-canonical ensembles is derived. Myers-…
Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black holes do not admit a completely smooth Euclidean continuation. We discuss some modifications of the gravitational path integral that give Euclidean SdS a semiclassical equilibrium interpretation. First we consider "gravity in a cavity," defining the canonical ensemble in a box that excises one horizon. However, this standard approach does not work for positive cosmological constant: the solution of lowest free energy has a negative heat capacity, which is inconsistent if it is to provide the leading semiclassical contribution to a canonical partition functio…
In the context of black hole chemistry, we study the thermodynamics of asymptotically de Sitter black holes with conformal scalar hair in Einstein gravity. The hair parameter allows us to attain thermodynamic equilibrium between the event horizon and the cosmological horizon. We find that the system of the black hole and the de Sitter space surrounding it undergo a Reverse Hawking-Page phase transition provided we consider the grand-canonical ensemble.
Dilaton black holes with a pure electric charge are considered in a framework of a grand canonical ensemble near the extreme state. It is shown that there exists such a subset of boundary data that the Hawking temperature smoothly goes to zero to an infinite value of a horizon radius but the horizon area and entropy are finite and differ from zero. In string theory the existence of a horizon in the extreme limit is due to the finiteness of a system only.
Using the canonical formalism, we study the asymptotic symmetries of the topological 3-dimensional gravity with torsion. In the anti-de Sitter sector, the symmetries are realized by two independent Virasoro algebras with classical central charges. In the simple case of the teleparallel vacuum geometry, the central charges are equal to each other and have the same value as in general relativity, while in the general Riemann-Cartan geometry, they become different.
In this paper, we study spontaneous scalarization of asymptotically anti-de Sitter charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and Maxwell fields. In this model, Reissner-Nordström-AdS (RNAdS) black holes are scalar-free black hole solutions, and may induce scalarized black holes due to the presence of a tachyonic instability of the scalar field near the event horizon. For RNAdS and scalarized black hole solutions, we investigate the domain of existence, perturbative stability against spherical perturbations and phase structure. In a …
From the partition function of canonical ensemble we derive the entropy of the de Sitter space by anti-Wick rotation. And then from the one-loop bubble $S^2\times S^2$ created from vacuum fluctuation in de Sitter background space, we obtain the one-loop quantum correction to the entropy of de Sitter space.
For long black holes have been considered as endowed with a definite temperature. Yet when the Schwarzschild black hole is treated as a canonical ensemble three problems arise: incompatibility with the Hawking radiation, divergence of the partition function, and a formally negative mean-square fluctuation of the energy. We solve all three problems by considering the Schwarzschild black hole as a grand canonical ensemble, with the Hamiltonian (the ADM mass) and the horizon surface area, separately, as observable parameters. The horizon area simulates the number of particles in statistical mecha…
The quantum theory of the vector field minimally coupled to the gravity of the de Sitter spacetime is built in a canonical manner starting with a new complete set of quantum modes of given momentum and helicity derived in the moving chart of conformal time. It is shown that the canonical quantization leads to new vector propagators which satisfy similar equations as the propagators derived by Tsamis and Woodard [{\em J.Math.Phys.} {\bf 48} (2007) 052306] but having a different structure. The one-particle operators are also written down pointing out that their properties are similar with those …
We consider the thermodynamics of a charged black hole enclosed in a cavity. The charge in the cavity and the temperature at the walls are fixed so that we have a canonical ensemble. We derive the phase structure and stability of black hole equilibrium states. We compare our results to that of other work which uses asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions to define the thermodynamics. The thermodynamic properties have extensive similarities which suggest that the idea of AdS holography is more dependent on the existence of the boundary than on the exact details of asymptotically AdS m…
The phase transition of four-dimensional charged AdS black hole solution in the $R+f(R)$ gravity with constant curvature is investigated in the grand canonical ensemble, where we find novel characteristics quite different from that in canonical ensemble. There exists no critical point for $T-S$ curve while in former research critical point was found for both the $T-S$ curve and $T-r_+$ curve when the electric charge of $f(R)$ black holes is kept fixed. Moreover, we derive the explicit expression for the specific heat, the analog of volume expansion coefficient and isothermal compressibility co…
In this paper, $n$-dimensional ($n=4p, p$ is a positive integer) $f(R)$-AdS black holes is divided into Schwazschild-AdS (SAdS) like ones and Reissner-Nordström-AdS (RN-AdS) like ones. Thermodynamical stability of them in grand canonical ensemble is investigated. Locally, we find that the RN-AdS like $f(R)$ black holes will experience either type-one or type-two phase transitions from unstable states to stable states, whereas there are only type-two phase transitions between that two states for SAdS like $f(R)$ black holes. Globally, we find that there are type-one Hawking-Page like phase tran…
Recently, extended phase space thermodynamics of Lovelock AdS black holes has been of great interest. To provide insight from a different perspective and gain a unified phase transition picture, non-extended phase space thermodynamics of $(n+1)$-dimensional charged topological Lovelock AdS black holes is investigated detailedly in the grand canonical ensemble. Specifically, the specific heat at constant electric potential is calculated and phase transition in the grand canonical ensemble is discussed. To probe the impact of the various parameters, we utilize the control variate method and solv…
We prove that there exists a phase space of canonical variables for the initial value problem for axially symmetric Maxwell fields propagating in Kerr-de Sitter black hole spacetimes such that their motion is restricted to the level sets of a positive-definite Hamiltonian, despite the ergo-region.
The grand-canonical thermodynamic potential for Bose and Fermi fields in anti-de Sitter space-time is introduced and a Mellin complex representation is given. This is used to investigate the high temperature properties of the thermal state at finite charge. The time-like nature of spatial infinity is shown to act as a boundary, and changes the free energy of the field in thermal equilibrium.
A new formulation of relativistic classical mechanics allows a revisiting of old unsolved problems in relativistic kinetic theory and in relativistic statistical mechanics. In particular a definition of the relativistic micro-canonical partition function is given strictly in terms of the Poincaré generators of an interacting N-particle system both in the inertial and non-inertial rest frames. The non-relativistic limit allows a definition of both the inertial and non-inertial micro-canonical ensemble strictly in terms of the Galilei generators. Also the one-particle relativistic distribution f…
We develop a formalism for general relativistic, grand canonical ensembles in space-times with timelike Killing fields. Using that formalism we derive ideal gas laws, and show how they depend on the geometry of the particular space-times. A systematic method for calculating Newtonian limits is given for a class of these space-times, which is illustrated for Kerr space-time. In addition, we prove uniqueness of the infinite volume Gibbs measure, and absence of phase transitions for a class of interaction potentials in anti-de Sitter space-time.
