In a space with positive cosmological constant $Λ$, we consider a black hole surrounded by a heat reservoir at radius $R$ and temperature $T$, i.e., we analyze the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole in a cavity. We use the Euclidean path integral approach to quantum gravity to study its canonical ensemble and thermodynamics. We give the action, energy, entropy, temperature, and heat capacity. $T$, $Λ$, the black hole radius $r_+$, and the cosmological horizon radius $r_{\rm c}$, are gauged in $R$ units to $RT$, $ΛR^2$, $\frac{r_+}{R}$, and $\frac{r_{\rm c}}{R}$. The whole extension of $ΛR^2$, $0\leqΛR^2\leq 3$, is divided into three ranges. The first, $0\leqΛR^2<1$, includes York's Schwarzschild black holes. The second range, $ΛR^2=1$, opens up a folder of Nariai universes. The third range, $1<ΛR^2\leq 3$, is unusual. One feature here is that it interchanges the cosmological horizon with the black hole horizon. The end point, $ΛR^2=3$, only existing for infinite $RT$, is a cavity filled with de Sitter space, except for a singularity, with the cosmological horizon coinciding with the reservoir. For the three ranges, for low temperatures, there are no black holes and no Nariai universes, the space is hot de Sitter. The value of $RT$ that divides the nonexistence from existence of black holes or Nariai universes, depends on $ΛR^2$. For each $ΛR^2\neq1$, for high temperatures, there is one small and thermodynamically unstable black hole, and one large and stable. For $ΛR^2=1$, for high temperatures, there is the unstable black hole, and the neutrally stable Nariai universe. Phase transitions can be analyzed. The transitions are between the black hole and hot de Sitter and between Nariai and hot de Sitter. The Buchdahl radius, the radius for collapse, plays an interesting role in the analysis.
We calculate the one-loop effective action for conformal matter (scalars, spinors and vectors) on spherically symmetric background. Such effective action (in large $N$ approximation and expansion on curvature) is used to study quantum aspects of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes (SdS BHs) in nearly degenerated limit (Nariai BH). We show that for all types of above matter SdS BHs may evaporate or anti-evaporate in accordance with recent observation by Bousso and Hawking for minimal scalars. Some remarks about energy flow for SdS BHs in regime of evaporation or anti-evaporation are also done. …
d5 higher derivative gravity on the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black hole background is considered. Two horizons SdS BHs are not in thermal equilibrium and Hawking-Page phase transitions are not expected there, unlike to the case of AdS BHs. It is demonstrated that there exists the regime of d5 theory where Nariai BH which is extremal limit of SdS BH is stable. It is in the contrast with Einstein gravity on such backgroundwhere only pure de Sitter space is always stable. Speculating on the applications in proposed dS/CFT correspondence, these two (de Sitter and Nariai) stable spaces may cor…
We study the problem of a four-dimensional brane lying in the five-dimensional degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Nariai) black hole, in five-dimensional $F(R)$-gravity. We show that there cannot exist the brane in the Nariai bulk space except the case that the brane tension vanishes. We demonstrate that the five-dimensional Nariai bulk is unstable in a large region of the parameter space. In particular, the Nariai bulk can have classical (anti-)evaporation instabilities. The bulk instability back-reacts on the four-dimensional brane, in case that the brane tension vanishes, and the unstable …
We study the stability under the perturbation and the related anti-evaporation of the Nariai space-time in bigravity. If we impose specific condition for the solutions and parameters, we obtain asymptotically de Sitter space-time, and show the existence of the Nariai space-time as a background solution. Considering the perturbation around the Nariai space-time up to first order, we investigate the behavior of black hole horizon. We show that the anti-evaporation does not occur on the classical level in the bigravity.
We find all the higher dimensional solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell theory that are the topological product of two manifolds of constant curvature. These solutions include the higher dimensional Nariai, Bertotti-Robinson and anti-Nariai solutions, and the anti-de Sitter Bertotti-Robinson solutions with toroidal and hyperbolic topology (Plebanski-Hacyan solutions). We give explicit results for any dimension D>3. These solutions are generated from the appropriate extremal limits of the higher dimensional near-extreme black holes in a de Sitter, and anti-de Sitter backgrounds. Thus, we also find…
Based on the fact that the near horizon geometry of the extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes is Nariai geometry, we define the black holes of Nariai class as the configuration whose near-horizon geometry is factorized as two dimensional de Sitter space-time and some compact topology, that is Nariai geometry. We extend the entropy function formalism to the case of the black holes of Nariai class. The conventional entropy function (for the extremal black holes) is defined as Legendre transformation of Lagrangian density, thus the `Routhian density', over two dimensional anti-de Sitter. A…
Dilaton coupled electromagnetic field is essential element of low-energy string effective action or it may be considered as result of spherical compactification of Maxwell theory in higher dimensions. The large $N$ and large curvature effective action for $N$ dilaton coupled vectors is calculated. Adding such quantum correction to classical dilaton gravity action we show that effective dilaton-Maxwell gravity under consideration may generate Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes (SdS BHs) with constant dilaton as solutions of the theory. That suggests a mechanism (alternative to BHs production) …
We investigate the future evolution of Nariai black hole which is extremal limit of Schwarzschild-de Sitter one in modified gravity. The perturbations equations around Nariai black hole are derived in static and cosmological patches for general $F(R)$-gravity. The analytical and numerical study of several realistic $F(R)$-models shows the occurence of rich variety of scenarios: instabilities, celebrated Hawking evaporation and anti-evaporation of black hole. The realization of specific scenario depends on the model under consideration. It is remarkable that the presence of such primordial blac…
In two previous papers we have analyzed the C-metric in a background with a cosmological constant, namely the de Sitter (dS) C-metric, and the anti-de Sitter (AdS) C-metric, following the work of Kinnersley and Walker for the flat C-metric. These exact solutions describe a pair of accelerated black holes in the flat or cosmological constant background, with the acceleration A being provided by a strut in-between that pushes away the two black holes. In this paper we analyze the extremal limits of the C-metric in a background with generic cosmological constant. We follow a procedure first intro…

We studied the anti-evaporation of degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole (so-called Nariai space-time) in modified $F(R)$ gravity. The analysis of perturbations of the Nariai black hole is done with the conclusion that anti-evaporation may occur in such a theory already on classical level. For several power-law $F(R)$ gravities which may describe the inflation and/or dark energy eras we presented the theory parameters bounds for occurrence of anti-evaporation and conjectured creation of infinite number of horizons.
The Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes of standard Einstein-Maxwell theory with a cosmological constant have no analogue in dilatonic theories with a Liouville potential. The only exception are the solutions of maximal mass, the Charged Nariai solutions. We show that the structure of the solution space of the Dilatonic Charged Nariai black holes is quite different from the non-dilatonic case. Its dimensionality depends on the exponential coupling constants of the dilaton. We discuss the possibility of pair creating such black holes on a suitable background. We find conditions for the exi…
The semiclassical effects of antievaporating black holes can be discussed in the framework of $f(R)$ gravity. In particular, the Bousso-Hawking-Nojiri-Odinstov antievaporation instability of degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes (the so called Nariai space-time) leads to a dynamical increasing of black hole horizon in $f(R)$ gravity. This phenomenon causes the following transition: emitting marginally trapped surfaces become space-like surfaces before the effective Bekenstein-Hawking emission time. As a consequence, Bousso-Hawking thermal radiation cannot be emitted in an antievaporat…
We investigate the instability of the unstable circular orbit of a charged null particle to test the strong cosmic censorship conjecture in Nariai-type near-extremal Reissner--Nordström--de Sitter black holes. The instability is estimated as the Lyapunov exponent and found to depend on the mass and charge of the black hole. Then, we explicitly show that charged null particles in unstable circular orbits correspond to the charged massless scalar field in the eikonal limit. This provides a compact relationship representing the quasinormal frequency in terms of the characteristics of unstable cir…
Rotating black holes in de Sitter space are known to have interesting limits where the temperatures of the black hole and cosmological horizon are equal. We give a complete description of the thermal phase structure of all allowed rotating black hole configurations. Only one configuration, the rotating Nariai limit, has the black hole and cosmological horizons both in thermal and rotational equilibrium, in that both the temperatures and angular velocities of the two horizons coincide. The thermal evolution of the spacetime is shown to lead to the pure de Sitter spacetime, which is the most ent…
In this work we analytically obtain the quasinormal spectrum for the gravitational perturbation on a higher-dimensional generalization of the Nariai spacetime that is comprised of the direct product of the two-dimensional de Sitter space with several two-spheres. A key step in order to attain this result is to use a suitable basis for the angular functions depending on the rank of the tensorial degree of freedom that one needs to describe. Here we define such a basis, which is a generalization of the tensor spherical harmonics that is suited for spaces that are the product of several spaces of…
Rotating maximal black holes in four-dimensional de Sitter space, for which the outer event horizon coincides with the cosmological horizon, have an infinite near-horizon region described by the rotating Nariai metric. We show that the asymptotic symmetry group at the spacelike future boundary of the near-horizon region contains a Virasoro algebra with a real, positive central charge. This is evidence that quantum gravity in a rotating Nariai background is dual to a two-dimensional Euclidean conformal field theory. These results are related to the Kerr/CFT correspondence for extremal black hol…
We propose that the state represented by the Nariai black hole inside de Sitter space is the ground state of the de Sitter gravity, while the pure de Sitter space is the maximal energy state. With this point of view, we investigate thermodynamics of de Sitter space, we find that if there is a dual field theory, this theory can not be a CFT in a fixed dimension. Near the Nariai limit, we conjecture that the dual theory is effectively an 1+1 CFT living on the radial segment connecting the cosmic horizon and the black hole horizon. If we go beyond the de Sitter limit, the "imaginary" high tempera…
The deep reason why the equations describing axial and polar perturbations of Schwarzschild black holes have the same spectrum is far from trivial. In this article, we revisit the original proof and try to make it clearer. Still focusing on uncharged and non-rotating black holes, we extend the results to spacetimes including a cosmological constant, which have so far mostly been investigated numerically from this perspective.
We study the quantum vacuum zero point energy in the Schwarzschild black hole as well as in the Nariai limit of the dS-Schwarzschild backgrounds. We show that the regularized vacuum energy density near the black hole and also in the Nariai setup match exactly with the corresponding value in the flat background, scaling with the fourth power of the mass of the quantum field. The horizon radius of the dS space created from the vacuum zero point energy introduces a new length scale which should be compared with the black hole horizon radius. There is an upper limiting mass for the black hole imme…

A quantum Schwarzschild spacetime and a quantum Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime with cosmological constant $Λ$ are constructed within the framework of a noncommutative Riemannian geometry developed in an earlier publication. The metrics and curvatures of the quantum Schwarzschild spacetime and the quantum Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime are computed. It is shown that up to the second order in the deformation parameter, the quantum spacetimes are solutions of a noncommutative Einstein equation which is proposed in this paper.
We study the scalar radiation emitted by a source orbiting a Schwarzschild--anti--de Sitter black hole in circular geodesics. We obtain the emitted power using quantum field theory in curved spacetimes at tree level with reflective boundary conditions at infinity. We compare our results with the ones obtained in Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild--de Sitter ($Λ> 0$) spacetimes. In the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime we observe an enhancement of the emitted power associated to the lower multipole modes, when compared with the Schwarzschild case. In contrast, for the Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter …
De Sitter black holes and other non-perturbative configurations can be used to probe the holographic degrees of freedom of de Sitter space. For small black holes evidence was first given in seminal work of Banks, Fiol, and Morrise; and followups by Banks and Fischler; showing that dS is described by a form of matrix theory. For large black holes the evidence given here is new: Gravitational calculations and matrix theory calculations of the rates of exponentially rare fluctuations match one another in surprising detail. The occurrence of the Nariai geometry and the "inside-out" transition are …
We propose a new model of the spherical symmetric quantum black hole in the reduced phase space formulation. We deparametrize gravity by coupling to the Gaussian dust which provides the material coordinates. The foliation by dust coordinates covers both the interior and exterior of the black hole. After the spherical symmetry reduction, our model is a 1+1 dimensional field theory containing infinitely many degrees of freedom. The effective dynamics of the quantum black hole is generated by an improved physical Hamiltonian ${\bf H}_Δ$ where the holonomy correction is implemented by the $\barμ$-…
We show in this note that the Padmanabhan expression $E = a/2$ for the energy of the Schwarzschild and de Sitter spacetimes (a - the horizon radius) is also valid for the Rindler horizon, using an analogy with the electrostatic case.
We combine notions of a maximal curvature scale in nature with that of a minimal curvature scale to construct a non-singular Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. We present an exact solution within the context of two-dimensional dilaton gravity. For a range of parameters the solution approaches Schwarzschild-de Sitter at large values of the radial coordinate, asymptotically approaching a de Sitter metric with constant minimal curvature, while approaching a maximal constant curvature smooth spacetime as the radial coordinate approaches zero. The spacetime is geodesically complete and generically…
We study whether the Hawking-Page phase transition may occur in topological de Sitter spaces (TdS) and Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole (SdS). We show that at the critical temperature $T=T_1$, TdS with hyperbolic cosmological horizon can make the Hawking-Page transition from the zero mass de Sitter space to TdS. It is also shown that there is no Hawking-Page transition for TdS with Ricci-flat and spherical horizons, when the zero mass de Sitter space is taken as the thermal background. Also we find that the SdS undergoes a different phase transition at T=0 which the Nariai black hole is form…
Perturbations of the Dirac field in the Schwarzschild spacetime are characterized by two wave equations (for two chiralities) with effective potentials which are iso-spectral and one of which is positive definite. Therefore, the stability of a Dirac field in the Schwarzschild background is straightforward. This is not so for the Schwarzschild-de Sitter case, because potentials for both chiralities have negative gaps and the fact that the stability is not automatically guaranteed in the asymptotically de Sitter case was apparently omitted in the literature. Performing the time-domain integratio…
Following the monodromy technique performed by Motl and Neitzke, we consider the analytic determination of the highly damped (asymptotic) quasi-normal modes of small Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black holes. We comment the result as compared to the recent numerical data of Konoplya and Zhidenko.
When de Sitter first introduced his celebrated spacetime, he claimed, following Schwarzschild, that its spatial sections have the topology of the real projective space RP^3 (that is, the topology of the group manifold SO(3)) rather than, as is almost universally assumed today, that of the sphere S^3. (In modern language, Schwarzschild was disturbed by the non-local correlations enforced by S^3 geometry.) Thus, what we today call "de Sitter space" would not have been accepted as such by de Sitter. There is no real basis within classical cosmology for preferring S^3 to RP^3, but the general feel…
The propagation of electromagnetic plane waves with negative phase velocity (NPV) is considered in Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter spacetime. It is demonstrated that NPV propagation occurs in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime at lower values of the cosmological constant than is the case for de Sitter spacetime. Furthermore, we report that neither is NPV propagation observed in Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetime, nor is it possible outside the event horizon of a Schwarzschild blackhole.
In a Schwarzschild-de Sitter space, we consider an equipotential surface which consists of two holographic screens. Adapting the Bousso-Hawking's reference point of vanishing force, we divide the space into two regions, which are from the reference point to each holographic screen. These two regions can be treated as independent thermodynamical systems, because the Bousso-Hawking reference point with zero temperature behaves like a thermally insulating wall. The entropy obtained in this way agrees with the conventional results; i) when the holographic screens lie at the black hole and cosmolog…
By using the Newman-Penrose formalism and the improved thin-layer ``brick wall'' approach, the statistical-mechanical entropies of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole arising from quantum massless arbitrary spin fields are studied in the Painlevé and Lemaitre coordinates. Although the metrics in both the Painlevé and the Lemaitre coordinates do not obviously possess the singularities as that in the Schwarzschild-like coordinate, we find that, for arbitrary spin fields, the entropies in the Painlevé and Lemaitre coordinates are exactly equivalent to that in the Schwarzschild-like coordinate.
Maximally extended, explicit and regular coverings of the Schwarzschild - de Sitter family of vacua are given, first in spacetime (generalizing a result due to Israel) and then for all dimensions $D$ (assuming a $D-2$ sphere). It is shown that these coordinates offer important advantages over the well known Kruskal - Szekeres procedure.
Earlier constructed a simple nonlocal de Sitter gravity model has a cosmological solution in a very good agreement with astronomical observations. In this paper, we continue the investigation of the nonlocal de Sitter model of gravity, focusing on finding an appropriate solution for the Schwarzschild-de Sitter metric. We succeeded to solve the equations of motion in a certain approximation. The obtained approximate solution is of particular interest for examining the possible role of non-local de Sitter gravity in describing the effects in galactic dynamics that are usually attributed to dark …
In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamical properties of Schwarzschild-Beltrami-de Sitter black hole introduced by Mu-Lin Yan \textit{et al.} in 2013 by introducing inertial Beltrami coordinates to traditional non-inertial Schwarzschild-de Sitter metric which is the exact static spherical symmetry solution of Einstein equation with a positive cosmological constant $Λ$. Based on this new metric, we compute entropy on all horizons and we give the entropy bound of the black hole. Hawking temperatures are calculated by considering a perturbation to entropy relations due to that the spacetim…
The low-laying frequencies of characteristic quasi-normal modes (QNM) of Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black holes have been calculated for fields of different spin using the 6th-order WKB approximation and the approximation by the Pöshl-Teller potential. The well-known asymptotic formula for large $l$ is generalized here on a case of the Schwarzchild-de Sitter black hole. In the limit of the near extreme $Λ$ term the results given by both methods are in a very good agreement, and in this limit fields of different spin decay with the same rate.
It is shown that the correspondence principle and the holographic principle are incompatible in the background of an eternal Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter geometry. The argument is based on the observation that algebraic structures of local quantum field and CFT operators are not equivalent. This implies, in particular, the bulk CFT must be singular near the black-hole horizon. A CFT Hilbert space representation is elaborated which may correspond to the AdS black hole in the dual theory.
The entropy for a black hole in a de Sitter space is approached within the framework of spacetime foam. A simple model, made by $N$ wormholes in a semiclassical approximation, is taken under examination to compute the entropy for such a case. An extension to the extreme case when the black hole and cosmological horizons are equal is discussed.
Following the subtraction procedure for manifolds with boundaries, we calculate by variational methods, the Schwarzschild-de Sitter and the de Sitter space energy difference. By computing the one loop approximation for TT tensors we discover the existence of an unstable mode even for the non-degenerate case. This result seems to be in agreement with the sub-maximal black hole pair creation of Bousso-Hawking. The instability can be eliminated by the boundary reduction method. Implications on a foam-like space are discussed.
We investigate the radiation of spin-1 particles by black holes in (1+1) dimensions within the Proca equation. The process is considered as quantum tunnelling of bosons through an event horizon. It is shown that the emission temperature for the Schwarzschild background geometry is the same as the Hawking temperature corresponding to scalar particles emission. We also obtain the radiation temperatures for the de Sitter, Rindler and Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-times. In a particular case when two horizons in Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time coincides the Nariai temperature is recovered. The …
The Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black hole metrics appear as exact solutions in the recently formulated massive gravity of de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley (dRGT), where the mass term sets the curvature scale. They occur within a two-parameter family of dGRT mass terms. They show no trace of a cloud of scalar graviton modes, and in the limit of vanishing graviton mass they go smoothly to the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström metrics.
We prove that the $TT$-gauge-fixed linearised Einstein operator is non-degenerate for Riemannian Kottler ("Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter") metrics with dimension- and topology-dependent ranges of mass parameter. We provide evidence that this remains true for all such metrics except the spherical ones with a critical mass.
Equipped with new powerful and efficient methods for computing quantum expectation values in static-spherically symmetric spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions, we perform an in-depth investigation of how the quantum vacuum polarization varies with the parameters in the theory. In particular, we compute and compare the vacuum polarization for a quantum scalar field in the Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime for a range of values of the field mass and field coupling constant as well as the black hole mass and number of spacetime dimensions. In addition, a new approximation for the va…
In the light of recent interest in quantum gravity in de Sitter space, we investigate semi-classical aspects of 4-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time using the method of complex paths. The standard semi-classical techniques (such as Bogoliubov coefficients and Euclidean field theory) have been useful to study quantum effects in space-times with single horizons; however, none of these approaches seem to work for Schwarzschild-de Sitter or, in general, for space-times with multiple horizons. We extend the method of complex paths to space-times with multiple horizons and obtain the spe…
We investigate a recent proposal for defining a conserved mass in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes that is based on a conjectured holographic duality between such spacetimes and Euclidean conformal field theory. We show that an algorithm for deriving such terms in asymptotically anti de Sitter spacetimes has an asymptotically de Sitter counterpart, and derive the explicit form for such terms up to 9 dimensions. We show that divergences of the on-shell action for de Sitter spacetime are removed in any dimension in inflationary coordinates, but in covering coordinates a linear divergence rema…
The Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black hole solution, which has two event horizons, is considered to examine the relation between the quasi-localized energy complexes on ${\cal M}$ and the heat flows passing through its boundary $\partial {\cal M}$. Here ${\cal M}$ is the patch between cosmological event horizon and black hole event horizon of the SdS black hole solution. Conclusively, the relation, like the Legendre transformation, between the quasi-localized Einstein and Møller energy complex and the heat flows passing through the boundary is obeyed, and these two quasi-localized energy com…

We show that the quasinormal spectrum of gravitational perturbations of Schwarzschild - de Sitter black holes contains a new branch of purely imaginary modes. These modes are not algebraically special and we showed that the sum of them form the well-known in the literature exponential asymptotic tail. When the ratio of the event horizon radius to the cosmological horizon vanishes, these quasinormal modes approach modes of empty de Sitter spacetime. Thus, the spectrum consists of the two branches: Schwarzschild branch deformed by the cosmological constant and de Sitter branch deformed by the bl…
We extend the derivation of the Hawking temperature of a Schwarzschild black hole via the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to the de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. The thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter black holes is obtained from the generalized uncertainty principle of string theory and non-commutative geometry. This may explain why the thermodynamics of (anti-)de Sitter-like black holes admits a holographic description in terms of a dual quantum conformal field theory, whereas the thermodynamics of Schwarzschild-like black holes does not.
