We study the scalar radiation emitted by a source orbiting a Schwarzschild--anti--de Sitter black hole in circular geodesics. We obtain the emitted power using quantum field theory in curved spacetimes at tree level with reflective boundary conditions at infinity. We compare our results with the ones obtained in Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild--de Sitter ($Λ> 0$) spacetimes. In the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime we observe an enhancement of the emitted power associated to the lower multipole modes, when compared with the Schwarzschild case. In contrast, for the Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetime, the enhancement is rather of the higher multipole modes.
In this paper we analyze the frequency shifts of the light emitted by particles describing stable circular geodesics around a static black hole immersed in an external magnetic field of arbitrary strength. This system is represented by the Ernst solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. The presence of the magnetic field and its magnitude affects both the geodesics and the red-blueshifts of the light emitted by neutral or charged particles orbiting the black hole. When the magnetic field is turned off we recover the characteristic redshifts coming from particles orbiting a Schwarzschild blac…
Covariant structure of the self-force of a particle in a general curved background has been made clear in the cases of scalar [Quinn], electromagnetic [DeWittBrehme], and gravitational charges [QuinnWald]. Namely, what we need is the part of the self-field that is non-vanishing off and within the past light-cone of particle's location, the so-called tail. The radiation reaction force in the absence of external fields is entirely contained in the tail. In this paper, we develop mathematical tools for the regularization and propose a practical method to calculate the self-force of a particle orb…
We numerically solve the inhomogeneous Zerilli-Moncrief and Regge-Wheeler equations in the time domain. We obtain the gravitational waveforms produced by a point-particle of mass $μ$ traveling around a Schwarzschild black hole of mass M on arbitrary bound and unbound orbits. Fluxes of energy and angular momentum at infinity and the event horizon are also calculated. Results for circular orbits, selected cases of eccentric orbits, and parabolic orbits are presented. The numerical results from the time-domain code indicate that, for all three types of orbital motion, black hole absorption contri…
We analyze the gravitational radiation emitted from a particle in circular motion around a Schwarzschild black hole using the framework of quantum field theory in curved spacetime at tree level. The gravitational perturbations are written in a gauge-invariant formalism for spherically symmetric spacetimes. We discuss the results, comparing them to the radiation emitted by a particle when it is assumed to be orbiting a massive object due to a Newtonian force in flat spacetime.
We describe the possibility of using LISA's gravitational-wave observations to study, with high precision, the response of a massive central body to the tidal gravitational pull of an orbiting, compact, small-mass object. Motivated by this application, we use first-order perturbation theory to study tidal coupling for an idealized case: a massive Schwarzschild black hole, tidally perturbed by a much less massive moon in a distant, circular orbit. We investigate the details of how the tidal deformation of the hole gives rise to an induced quadrupole moment in the hole's external gravitational f…
We compute the first-order self-force contribution to Detweiler's redshift invariant for extended bodies endowed with both dipolar and quadrupolar structure (with spin-induced quadrupole moment) moving along circular orbits on a Schwarzschild background. Our analysis includes effects which are second order in spin, generalizing previous results for purely spinning particles. The perturbing body is assumed to move on the equatorial plane, the associated spin vector being orthogonal to it. The metric perturbations are obtained by using a standard gravitational self-force approach in a radiation …
The possibility of exciting the g-modes of a solar-type star as a consequence of the gravitational interaction with a close companion (a planet or a brown dwarf) is studied by a perturbative approach. The amplitude of the emitted gravitational wave is computed and compared with the quadrupole emission of the system, showing that in some cases it can be considerably larger. The effects of radiation reaction are considered to evaluate the timescale of the emission process, and a Roche lobe analysis is used to establish the region where the companion can orbit without being disrupted by tidal int…
We analyze the scalar radiation emitted by a source in geodesic circular orbits around a Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. We obtain the emitted power using quantum field theory in curved spacetimes framework at tree level. We compare our results with the scalar synchrotron radiation in Schwarzschild spacetime.
In this paper we are discussing the problem of low-energy greybody factors for fermions emitted by a Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. In our study we are using the analytical methods proposed by Unruh some time ago for determining the greybody factors. We have found that at low energies the greybody factors are constant for a given total angular momentum (similar to what happens in the case of scalar particles reported before in the literature). Also our results are indicating an enhancement in the energy spectrum if one is increasing the value of the cosmological constant. These results ar…
We compute the energy spectra of the gravitational signals emitted when a pointlike mass moves on a closed orbit around a non rotating neutron star, inducing a perturbation of its gravitational field and its internal structure. The Einstein equations and the hydrodynamical equations are perturbed and numerically integrated in the frequency domain. The results are compared with the energy spectra computed by the quadrupole formalism which assumes that both masses are pointlike, and accounts only for the radiation emitted because the orbital motion produces a time dependent quadrupole moment. Th…
We obtain the mass parameter for a class of static and spherically symmetric regular black holes (BHs) (namely Bardeen, Hayward and Ayón-Beato-García BHs) which are solutions of Einstein's field equations coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) in terms of redshifts and blueshifts of photons emitted by geodesic particles (for instance, stars) orbiting around these BHs. The motion of photons is not governed by null geodesics for these type of spacetime geometries which reflects the direct effects of the electrodynamic nonlinearities in the photon motion; hence, an effective geometry needs to…
We investigate the geodesic motion of massless test particles in the background of a noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild black hole. The behaviour of effective potential is analysed in the equatorial plane and the possible motions of massless particles (i.e. photons) for different values of impact parameter are discussed accordingly. We have also calculated the frequency shift of photons in this spacetime. Further, the mass parameter of a non-commutative inspired Schwarzschild black hole is computed in terms of the measurable redshift of photons emitted by massive particles moving a…
The excitation of neutron stars is expected to be an important source of gravitational radiation. Of fundamental importance is then to investigate mechanisms that trigger oscillations in neutron stars in order to characterize the emitted radiation. We present results from a numerical study of the even-parity gravitational radiation generated from a particle orbiting a neutron star. We focus our investigation on those conditions on the orbital parameters that favor the excitation of $w$-modes. We find that, for astrophysically realistic conditions, there is practically no $w$-mode contribution …
In this work, we consider the propagation of scalar particles in a higher-dimensional Schwarzschild-de-Sitter black-hole spacetime, both on the brane and in the bulk. Our analysis applies for arbitrary partial modes and for both minimal and non-minimal coupling of the scalar field. A general expression for the greybody factor is analytically derived in each case, and its low-energy behaviour is studied in detail. Its profile in terms of scalar properties (angular-momentum number and non-minimal coupling parameter) and spacetime properties (number of extra dimensions and cosmological constant) …
The description of extreme-mass-ratio binary systems in the inspiral phase is a challenging problem in gravitational wave physics with significant relevance for the space interferometer LISA. The main difficulty lies in the evaluation of the effects of the small body's gravitational field on itself. To that end, an accurate computation of the perturbations produced by the small body with respect the background geometry of the large object, a massive black hole, is required. In this paper we present a new computational approach based on Finite Element Methods to solve the master equations descr…
For the radial motion of massive particles with large angular momenta in Schwarzschild geometry and that of massive charged particles with large angular momenta or energy in a particular range in Reissner--Nordström geometry, there exist classically forbidden regions on the outside of the respective event horizons which scatter certain infalling geodesics or screen some of the black holes' evaporation by reflecting the emitted particles back into the black holes. Quantum tunneling across this forbidden regions is studied.
The Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations describe the motion of an extended test body in general relativity. This system of equations, though, is underdetermined and has to be accompanied by constraining supplementary conditions, even in its simplest version, which is the pole-dipole approximation corresponding to a spinning test body. In particular, imposing a spin supplementary condition (SSC) fixes the center of the mass of the spinning body, i.e. the centroid of the body. In the present study, we examine whether characteristic features of the centroid of a spinning test body, moving …
The effects that the structure of a neutron star would have on the gravitational emission of a binary system are studied in a perturbative regime, and in the frequency domain. Assuming that a neutron star is perturbed by a point mass moving on a close, circular orbit, we solve the equations of stellar perturbations in general relativity to evaluate the energy lost by the system in gravitational waves. We compare the energy output obtained for different stellar models with that found by assuming that the perturbed object is a black hole with the same mass, and we discuss the role played by the …
The energy of a test particle orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole is quantized owing to the quantization of the angular momentum. For smallest stable circular orbit, the excitation energy is found to resemble closely the expression for the temperature of the Hawking radiation. This result is consistent with the Unruh effect for orbiting test particle. The predicted energy quantization might be observable by studies of the red-shifted 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen orbiting a primordial black hole with mass of the order of that of Earth.
We consider an observer who moves under the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole and absorbs a photon. There are two different situations when (i) a photon comes from infinity, (ii) it is emitted by another observer under the horizon (say, by a surface of a collapsing star). We analyze the frequency change for absorption near the event horizon, in an intermediate region and near the singularity and compare the results for both scenarios. Near the singularity, in both scenarios infinite redshift (in the pure radial case) or infinite blueshift are possible, depending on angular momenta of a p…
We formulate a spherical harmonically decomposed 1+1 scheme to self-consistently evolve the trajectory of a point particle and its gravitational metric perturbation to a Schwarzschild background spacetime. Following the work of Moncrief, we write down an action for perturbations in space-time geometry, combine that with the action for a point-particle, and then obtain Hamiltonian equations of motion for metric perturbations, the particle's coordinates, as well as their canonical momenta. Hamiltonian equations for the metric-perturbation and their conjugate momenta reduce to Zerilli-Moncrief an…
We revisit the problem of plane monochromatic gravitational waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole using complex angular momentum techniques. By extending our previous study concerning scalar and electromagnetic waves [A. Folacci and M. Ould El Hadj, Phys.\, Rev.\, D {\bf 99}, 104079, (2019), arXiv:1901.03965], we provide complex angular momentum representations and Regge pole approximations of the helicity-preserving and helicity-reversing scattering amplitudes and of the total differential scattering cross section. We show, in particular, that for high frequencies (i.e., in the shor…
Shape and frequency-shift map of direct and indirect images of Keplerian discs orbiting in Bardeen and Ayon-Beato-Garcia (ABG) black hole and no-horizon spacetimes are determined. Then profiles of spectral lines generated in the innermost parts of the Keplerian discs in the Bardeen and ABG spacetimes are constructed. The frequency-shift maps and profiled spectral lines are compared to those generated in the field of Schwarzschild black holes and possible observationally relevant signatures of the regular black hole and no-horizon spacetimes are discussed. We demonstrate that differences relati…
We consider an electric charge, minimally coupled to the Maxwell field, rotating around a Schwarzschild black hole. We investigate how much of the radiation emitted from the swirling charge is absorbed by the black hole and show that most of the photons escape to infinity. For this purpose we use the Gupta-Bleuler quantization of the electromagnetic field in the modified Feynman gauge developed in the context of quantum field theory in Schwarzschild spacetime. We obtain that the two photon polarizations contribute quite differently to the emitted power. In addition, we discuss the accurateness…
Electromagnetic radiation emitted by a charged particle plunging from slightly below the innermost stable circular orbit into a Schwarzschild black hole is examined. Both even- and odd-parity electromagnetic perturbations are considered. They are described by using gauge invariant master functions and the regularized multipolar waveforms as well as their unregularized counterparts constructed from the quasinormal-mode spectrum are obtained for arbitrary directions of observation and, in particular, outside the orbital plane of the plunging particle. They are in excellent agreement and the resu…
We investigate the influence of the spacetime curvature on the interference of the radiation emitted by an ensemble of scalar sources in circular motion around a Schwarzschild black hole. We pay particular attention to the transition from the radiating to the non-radiating regime as the number of sources increases.
Using Thorne's hoop conjecture, it is argued that the energies of the Hawking quanta emitted from canonical Schwarzschild black holes are bounded from above by the simple quantum relation ${\cal E}<{\cal E}_{\text{max}}={\hbar^{2/3}}/M^{1/3}$. In particular, it is shown that, due to non-linear (self-gravity) effects of the tunneling quanta, higher energy field modes are re-absorbed (rather than escape to infinity) by the black hole.
We analyze the scalar radiation emitted from a source rotating around a Schwarzschild black hole using the framework of quantum field theory at the tree level. We show that for relativistic circular orbits the emitted power is about 20% to 30% smaller than what would be obtained in Minkowski spacetime. We also show that most of the emitted energy escapes to infinity. Our formalism can readily be adapted to investigate similar processes.
In many astrophysically relevant situations radiation reaction force acting upon a charge can not be neglected and the question arises about the location and stability of circular orbits in such regime. Motion of point charge with radiation reaction in flat spacetime is described by Lorenz-Dirac (LD) equation, while in curved spacetime -- by DeWitt-Brehme (DWB) equation containing the Ricci term and the tail term. We show that for the motion of elementary particles in vacuum metrics the DWB equation can be reduced to the covariant form of the LD equation which we use here. Generically, the LD …
Scalar field self-force effects on a scalar charge orbiting a Reissner-Nordström black hole are investigated. The scalar wave equation is solved analytically in a post-Newtonian framework, and the solution is used to compute the self-field as well as the components of the self-force at the particle's location up to 7.5 post-Newtonian order. The energy fluxes radiated to infinity and down the hole are also evaluated. Comparison with previous numerical results in the Schwarzschild case shows a good agreement in both strong-field and weak-field regimes.
We present a practical method for calculating the local gravitational self-force (often called ``radiation-reaction force'') for a pointlike particle orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole. This is an implementation of the method of {\it mode-sum regularization}, in which one first calculates the (finite) contribution to the force due to each individual multipole mode of the perturbation, and then applies a certain regularization procedure to the mode sum. Here we give the values of all the ``regularization parameters'' required for implementing this regularization procedure, for any geodesic orb…
We consider a spinning test-body in circular motion around a nonrotating black hole and analyze different prescriptions for the body's dynamics. We compare, for the first time, the Mathisson-Papapetrou formalism under the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary-condition (SSC), the Pirani SSC and the Ohashi-Kyrian-Semerak SSC, and the spinning particle limit of the effective-one-body Hamiltonian of [Phys.~Rev.~D.90,~044018(2014)]. We analyze the four different dynamics in terms of the ISCO shifts and in terms of the coordinate invariant binding energies, separating higher-order spin contributions from sp…
We study the quantum corrections to the four-dimensional Schwarzschild Anti de Sitter black hole using effective field theory approach. We compute the quantum correction to Hawking temperature upto order $\mathcal{O}{(G^{2})}$ for a Schwarzschild AdS black hole when the emitted object is massless and massive. We use the expression of the modified horizon radius to compute the quantum corrected entropy upto order $\mathcal{O}{(G^{2})}$. Finally we compute quantum corrected thermodynamic parameters specific heat, free energy and pressure.
We consider Unruh effect as an origin for Schwarzschild black hole entropy thus implying unitarian evolution of gravity. We simulate the black hole by set of Unruh horizons and estimate total entropy of the system. Dependence on mass and spin of the emitted particles is taken into account. The obtained results may be easily extended to any other intrinsic degrees of freedom of the particles. Unruh effect contribution to Schwarzschild black hole entropy is presented in exact analytical form.
Here we examine the circular motion of test particles and photons in the spacetime geometry of charged black hole surrounded by quintessence and clouds of strings for the equation of state parameter $ω_q=-2/3$. We observe that there exist stable circular orbits in this geometry for very small values of the quintessence and string cloud parameters, i.e., $0<γ<<1$ and $0<α<<1$. We observe that if the values of $γ$ and $α$ increase, the test particle can more easily escape the gravitational field of the black hole. While the effect of the charge $Q$ of the black hole on the effective potential is…
The massive particles tunneling method has been used to investigate the Hawking non-thermal and purely thermal radiations of Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter (SAdS) black hole. Considering the spacetime background to be dynamical, incorporate the self-gravitation effect of the emitted particles the imaginary part of the action has been derived from Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Using the conservation laws of energy and angular momentum we have showed that the non-thermal and purely thermal tunneling rates are related to the change of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the derived emission spectrum deviate…
A novel method for calculation of the motion and radiation reaction for the two-body problem (body plus particle, the small parameter m/M being the ratio of the masses) is presented. In the background curvature given by the Schwarzschild geometry rippled by gravitational waves, the geodesic equations insure the presence of radiation reaction also for high velocities and strong field. The method is generally applicable to any orbit, but radial fall is of interest due to the non-adiabatic regime (equality of radiation reaction and fall time scales), in which the particle locally and immediately …
The semiclassical effects of antievaporating black holes can be discussed in the framework of $f(R)$ gravity. In particular, the Bousso-Hawking-Nojiri-Odinstov antievaporation instability of degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes (the so called Nariai space-time) leads to a dynamical increasing of black hole horizon in $f(R)$ gravity. This phenomenon causes the following transition: emitting marginally trapped surfaces become space-like surfaces before the effective Bekenstein-Hawking emission time. As a consequence, Bousso-Hawking thermal radiation cannot be emitted in an antievaporat…
We revisit the problem of scalar and electromagnetic waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole from complex angular momentum techniques. We focus more particularly on the associated differential scattering cross sections. We derive an exact representation of the corresponding scattering amplitudes by replacing the discrete sum over integer values of the angular momentum which defines their partial wave expansions by a background integral in the complex angular momentum plane plus a sum over the Regge poles of the $S$-matrix involving the associated residues. We show that, surprisingly, t…
The interaction of a charged particle with its own field results in the "self-force" on the particle, which includes but is more general than the radiation reaction force. In the vicinity of the particle in curved spacetime, one may follow Dirac and split the retarded field of the particle into two parts, (1) the singular source field, ~q/r, and (2) the regular remainder field. The singular source field exerts no force on the particle, and the self-force is entirely caused by the regular remainder. We describe an elementary multipole decomposition of the singular source field which allows for …

We analyze the scalar radiation emitted by a source in a circular geodesic orbit around a spherically symmetric black hole. The black hole spacetime considered is quite general, in the sense that it encompasses the solutions of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström, and also the Bardeen solution of a regular black hole. We use the framework of quantum field theory in curved spaces to compute the one-particle emission amplitude of scalar particles and related quantities.
A modified (Anti-)de Sitter Schwarzschild black hole solution is presented in the framework of rainbow gravity with a cosmological constant. Its thermodynamical properties are investigated. In general the temperature of modified black holes is dependent on the energy of probes which take the measurement. However, a notion of intrinsic temperature can be introduced by identifying these probes with radiation particles emitted from black holes. It is interesting to find that the Hawking temperature of this sort of black holes can be reproduced by employing the extended uncertainty principle and m…
We compute the effects on the temperature and precise spectrum of Hawking radiation from a Schwarzschild black hole when the emitted object is taken to be spatially extended. We find that in the low-momentum regime, the power emitted is exponentially suppressed for sufficiently large radiated objects, or sufficiently small black holes, though the temperature of emission is unchanged. We numerically determine the magnitude of this suppression as a function of the size and mass of the object and the black hole, and discuss the implications for various extended objects in nature.
We investigate the wave optics in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Applying the standard formalism of wave scattering problems, the Green function represented by the sum over the partial waves is evaluated using the Poisson sum formula. The effect of orbiting scattering due to the unstable circular orbit for null rays is taken into account as the contribution of the Regge poles of the scattering matrix and the asymptotic form of the scattering wave is obtained in the eikonal limit. Using this wave function, images of the black hole illuminated by a point source are reconstructed. We also discuss t…
The mass parameters of compact objects such as Boson Stars, Schwarzschild, Reissner Nordstrom and Kerr black holes are computed in terms of the measurable redshift-blueshift (zred, zblue) of photons emitted by particles moving along circular geodesics around these objects and the radius of their orbits. We found bounds for the values of (zred, zblue) that may be observed. For the case of Kerr black hole, recent observational estimates of SrgA\* mass and rotation parameter are employed to determine the corresponding values of these red-blue shifts.
