The quantum theory of the vector field minimally coupled to the gravity of the de Sitter spacetime is built in a canonical manner starting with a new complete set of quantum modes of given momentum and helicity derived in the moving chart of conformal time. It is shown that the canonical quantization leads to new vector propagators which satisfy similar equations as the propagators derived by Tsamis and Woodard [{\em J.Math.Phys.} {\bf 48} (2007) 052306] but having a different structure. The one-particle operators are also written down pointing out that their properties are similar with those found already in the quantum theory of the scalar, Dirac and Maxwell free fields.
Our recent results concerning the transformation under isometries of the conserved quantities on de Sitter manifolds, allow us to define the rest frame and study the relative geodesic motion in terms of conserved momentum, revealing thus various relativistic effects [I. I. Cotaescu, arXiv:1701.08499]. Here we discuss the time dilation (of the twin paradox) and the Lorentz contraction on the de Sitter expanding portions, pointing out the dependence of these effects on the position and moment in which the time and lengths are measured.
The propagators of the Dirac fermions are studied in the configuration representation on the expanding portion of the $(1+3)$-dimensional de Sitter spacetime considering a fixed vacuum of Bunch-Davies type. In this representation the method of Koksma and Prokopec [J. F. Koksma and T. Prokopec, Class. Quant. Grav. {\bf 26}, 125003 (2009)] is applied recovering thus the form of the propagators in the massive case but obtaining a new result for the left-handed massless fermions (neutrinos).
A new redshift formula is obtained considering the longitudinal Doppler effect in the de Sitter expanding universe where the relative geodesic motion is governed by the Lorenzian isometries of our new de Sitter relativity [I. I. Cot\u aescu, {Eur. Phys. J. C} {\bf 77} (2017) 485]. This formula combines in a non-trivial manner the well-known cosmological contribution given by Lama\' itre's law with that of the relative motion of the source with respect to a fixed observer as in de Sitter relativity instead of special relativity. Other related quantities as the dispersion relation, the propagati…
A new type of integral representation is proposed for the propagators of the massive Klein-Gordon field minimally coupled to the gravity of the de Sitter expanding universe. This representation encapsulates the effects of the Heaviside step functions of the Feynman propagators making possible for the first time the calculation of Feynman diagrams involving scalar particles on this background. In order to convince that, a simple example is given outlining the amplitudes in the second order of perturbations of the Compton effect in the de Sitter scalar quantum electrodynamics.
The propagators of the Dirac fermions on the expanding portion of the (1+3)-dimensional de Sitter spacetime are considered as mode sums in momentum representation with a fixed vacuum of Bunch-Davies type. The principal result reported here is a new integral representation of the Feynman propagators of the massive and left-handed massless Dirac fields which can be used for deriving the Feynman rules of the de Sitter QED in Coulomb gauge or of an extended QFT.
The quantum theory of the Maxwell free field in Coulomb gauge on the de Sitter expanding universe is completed with the technical elements needed for building a coherent quantum theory of redshift. Paying a special attention to the conserved observables and defining the projection operator selecting the detected momenta it is shown that the expectation values of the energies of the emitted and detected photons comply with the Lema\^ itre rule of Hubble's law. Moreover, the quantum corrections to the dispersions of the principal observables and new uncertainty relations are derived.
New spherical scalar modes on the expanding part of Sitter spacetime, eigenfunctions of a conserved Hamiltonian-like operator are found by solving the Klein-Gordon equation in the appropriate coordinate chart, with the help of a time evolution picture technique specially developed for spatially flat FLRW charts. Transition coefficients are computed between these modes and the rest of the scalar spherical and plane wave modes, either momentum or energy eigenfunctions on the spatially flat FLRW chart.
A new method is applied for deriving the redshift and shadow of a Schwarzschild black hole moving freely in the de Sitter expanding universe as recorded by a co-moving remote observer. This method is manly algebraic focusing on the transformation of the conserved quantities under the de Sitter isometry relating the black hole proper co-moving frame to observer's one. Hereby one extracts the general expressions of the redshifts and shadows of the black holes having peculiar velocities but their expressions are too extended to be written down here. Therefore, only some particular cases and intui…
We consider first order transition amplitudes in external fields in QED in the expanding de Sitter space and point out that they are gauge dependent quantities. We examine the gauge variations of the amplitudes assuming a decoupling of the interaction at large times, which allows to conclude that the source of the problem lies in the fact that the frequencies of the modes in the infinite future become independent of the comoving momenta. We show that a possibility to assure the gauge invariance of the external field amplitudes is to restrict to potentials which vanish sufficiently fast at infi…
New quantum modes of the free scalar field are derived in a special time-evolution picture that may be introduced in moving charts of de Sitter backgrounds. The wave functions of these new modes are solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation and energy eigenfunctions, defining the energy basis. This completes the scalar quantum mechanics where the momentum basis is well-known from long time. In this enlarged framework the quantization of the scalar field can be done in canonical way obtaining the principal conserved one-particle operators and the Green functions.
The general plane wave solutions of the Proca field in conformal charts of the de Sitter expanding universe are derived for arbitrary polarizations showing how the frequencies can be separated in rest frames, defining thus the rest frame vacuum of this field.
It is shown that on the de Sitter space-time the global behavior of the free Dirac spinors in momentum representation is determined by several phases factors which are functions of momentum with special properties. Such suitable phase functions can be chosen for writing down the free Dirac quantum modes of the spin basis that are well-defined even for the particles at rest in the moving local charts where the modes of the helicity basis remain undefined. Under quantization these modes lead to a basis in which the one-particle operators keep their usual forms apart from the energy operator whic…
The theory of the free Maxwell field in two moving frames on the de Sitter spacetime is investigated pointing out that the conserved momentum and energy operators do not commute to each other. This leads us to consider new plane waves solutions of the Maxwell equation which are eigenfunctions of the energy operator. Such particular solutions complete the theory in which only the solutions of given momentum were considered so far. The energy eigenfunctions can be obtained thanks to our new time-evolution picture proposed previously for the scalar and Dirac fields. Considering both these types o…
The $(1+3)$-dimensional Dirac equation of the fermions moving in ideal Aharonov-Bohm rings in the de Sitter expanding universe is used for deriving the exact expressions of the general relativistic partial currents and corresponding energies. In the de Sitter geometry, these quantities depend on time but these are related each other just as in the non-relativistic case or in special relativity. A specific relativistic effect is the saturation of the partial currents for high values of the total angular momentum. The total relativistic persistent current at $T=0$ takes over this property even t…
We propose an experimental scheme to observe the Gibbons-Hawking effect in the acoustic analog of a 1+1-dimensional de Sitter universe, produced in an expanding, cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate. It is shown that a two-level system created at the center of the trap, an atomic quantum dot interacting with phonons, observes a thermal Bose distribution at the de Sitter temperature.
The discrete symmetries of the Dirac field on the de Sitter manifold are studied taking into account that this has two portions that can play the role of physical space-times, namely the expanding and a collapsing universes. The proper discrete isometries which preserve the portion have a physical meaning in contrast to the improper ones which change the portion remaining thus of a mere mathematical interest. The discrete symmetries generated by the proper isometries and charge conjugation are studied in physical frames on the expanding portion shoving that all the discrete transformations rev…
We explicitly demonstrate that the known solutions for expanding impulsive spherical gravitational waves that have been obtained by a "cut and paste" method may be considered to be impulsive limits of the Robinson-Trautman vacuum type N solutions. We extend these results to all the generically distinct subclasses of these solutions in Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter backgrounds. For these we express the solutions in terms of a continuous metric. Finally, we also extend the class of spherical shock gravitational waves to include a non-zero cosmological constant.
We study the black-box parameter estimation of expanding parameters and the dynamics of Gaussian interferometric power for the de Sitter space. We find that the state between separated open charts can be employed as probe state for the black-box quantum metrology. This is nontrivial because the open charts are causally disconnected and classical information can not be exchanged between them according to the general relativity. It is shown that the mass of the scalar field remarkably affects the accuracy of the black-box parameter estimation in the de Sitter space, which is quite different from…
Circular massless cosmic strings which move with the speed of light in the de Sitter universe are described. Construction of the background geometry is based on parabolic isometries of the de Sitter spacetime. Microscopic circular cosmic strings may appear at the Planck epoch and then grow up to the Hubble size. We analyze: images of the strings, influence of strings on trajectories of matter, formation of overdensities, and shifts of energies of photons. These effects allow one to discriminate massless strings from their massive cousins. The present work extends our results on straight massle…
Since the Randall-Sundrum 1999 papers, braneworlds have been a favourite playground to test string inspired cosmological models. The subject has developped into two main directions : elaborating more complex models in order to strenghten the connection with string theories, and trying to confront them with observations, in particular the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies. We review here the latter and see that, even in the simple, "paradigmatic", case of a single expanding brane in a 5D anti-de Sitter bulk, there is still a missing link between the "view from the brane" and the "view fr…
Expanding edge experiments are promising to open new physics windows of quantum Hall systems. In a static edge, the edge excitation, which is described by free fields decoupled with the bulk dynamics, is gapless, and the dynamics preserve conformal symmetry. When the edge expands, such properties need not be preserved. We formulate a quantum field theory in 1+1 dimensional curved spacetimes to analyze the edge dynamics. We propose methods to address the following questions using edge waveforms from the expanding region: Does the conformal symmetry survive? Is the nonlinear interaction of the e…
The tetrad gauge invariant theory of the free Dirac field in two special moving charts of the de Sitter spacetime is investigated pointing out the operators that commute with the Dirac one. These are the generators of the symmetry transformations corresponding to isometries that give rise to conserved quantities according to the Noether theorem. With their help the plane wave spinor solutions of the Dirac equation with given momentum and helicity are derived and the final form of the quantum Dirac field is established. It is shown that the canonical quantization leads to a correct physical int…
We study conformally-coupled massive scalar field theory with the mass term treated as a perturbation in the expanding half of de Sitter spacetime as a toy model for comparing various perturbative formalisms. We point out that the in-out perturbation theory breaks down due to infrared divergences coming from the infinite future. We then clarify the relation between the free-theory vacuum and the true vacuum using the Bogolubov transformation and show that the discrepancy between the free-theory out-vacuum and the true vacuum causes apparent pair creation of free-theory particles and makes the …
In this global study of solutions to the linear wave equation on Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetimes we attend to the cosmological region of spacetime which is bounded in the past by cosmological horizons and to the future by a spacelike hypersurface at infinity. We prove an energy estimate capturing the expansion of that region which combined with earlier results for the static region yields a global boundedness result for linear waves. It asserts that a general finite energy solution to the global initial value problem has a limit on the future boundary at infinity that can be viewed as a fun…
We describe the quasi-static collapse of a radiating, spherical shell of matter in de Sitter space-time using a thermodynamical formalism. It is found that the specific heat at constant area and other thermodynamical quantities exhibit singularities related to phase transitions during the collapse.
In this paper we study the propagation in a de Sitter universe of gravitational waves generated by perturbating some unspecified spherical astrophysical object in the frequencies domain. We obtain the axial and polar perturbation equations in a cosmological de Sitter universe in the usual comoving coordinates, the coordinates we occupy in our galaxy. We write down the relevant equations in terms of Laplace transform with respect to the comoving time $t$ instead of the usual Fourier one that is no longer available in a cosmological context. Both axial and polar perturbation equations are expres…
Fermion production by the electric field of a charge on de Sitter expanding universe is analyzed. The amplitude and probability of pair production are computed. We obtain from our calculations that the modulus of the momentum is no longer conserved and that there are probabilities for production processes where the helicity is no longer conserved. The rate of pair production in an electric field is found to be important in the early universe when the expansion factor was large comparatively with the particle mass.
We present a general formulation of the time-dependent initial value problem for a quantum scalar field of arbitrary mass and curvature coupling in a FRW cosmological model. We introduce an adiabatic number basis which has the virtue that the divergent parts of the quantum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor <T_ab> are isolated in the vacuum piece of <T_ab>, and may be removed using adiabatic subtraction. The resulting renormalized <T_ab> is conserved, independent of the cutoff, and has a physically transparent, quasiclassical form in terms of the average number of created adiabati…
In the framework of finite temperature conformal scalar field theory on de Sitter space-time the linearized Einstein equations for the renormalized stress tensor are exactly solved. In this theory quantum field fluctuations are concentrated near two spheres of the de Sitter radius, propagating as light wave fronts. Related cosmological aspects are shortly discussed. The analysis, performed for flat expanding universe, shows exponential damping of the back-reaction effects far from these spherical objects. The obtained solutions for the semiclassical Einstein equations in de Sitter background c…
We discuss a new scenario for early cosmology when the inflationary de Sitter phase emerges dynamically. This genuine quantum effect occurs as a result of dynamics of the topologically nontrivial sectors in a strongly coupled QCD- like gauge theory in an expanding universe. We test these ideas by explicit computations in hyperbolic space $ \mathbb{H}^3_κ\times \mathbb{S}^1_{κ^{-1}}$. We argue that the key element for this idea to work is the presence of nontrivial holonomy computed along $\mathbb{S}^1_{κ^{-1}}$. The effect is non-local in nature, non-analytical in coupling constant and can not…
Inspired in a previous work by McClure and Dyer (Classical Quantum Gravity 23, 1971 (2006)), we analyze some solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations which were originally written to describe charged black holes in cosmological backgrounds. A detailed analysis of the electromagnetic sources for a sufficiently general metric is performed, and then we focus on deriving the electromagnetic four-current as well as the conserved electric charge of each metric. The charged McVittie solution is revisited and a brief study of its causal structure is performed, showing that it may represent a charge…
The decay of solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation is studied in two expanding cosmological spacetimes, namely the de Sitter universe in flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) form, and the cosmological region of the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter (RNdS) model. Using energy methods, for initial data with finite higher order energies, decay rates for the solution are obtained. Also, a previously established decay rate of the time derivative of the solution to the wave equation, in an expanding de Sitter universe in flat FLRW form, is improved, proving Rendall's conjecture. A similar imp…
We point out that the transition probabilities used in a recent perturbative calculation of pair creation in an external magnetic field in the expanding de Sitter space with the $in$ and $out$ fermion states defined by the Bunch-Davies modes [C. Crucean et al., Phys. Rev. D 73 044019 (20016)] are gauge dependent quantities. We examine the gauge variations of these amplitudes assuming a decoupling of the interaction at infinite times, which allows to conclude that the source of the problem lies in the nonoscillatory behavior of the fermion current in the infinite future.
We show that entanglement can be used to detect spacetime curvature. Quantum fields in the Minkowski vacuum are entangled with respect to local field modes. This entanglement can be swapped to spatially separated quantum systems using standard local couplings. A single, inertial field detector in the exponentially expanding (de Sitter) vacuum responds as if it were bathed in thermal radiation in a Minkowski universe. We show that using two inertial detectors, interactions with the field in the thermal case will entangle certain detector pairs that would not become entangled in the correspondin…
We study geodesics in the complete family of expanding impulsive gravitational waves propagating in spaces of constant curvature, that is Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter universes. Employing the continuous form of the metric we rigorously prove existence and global uniqueness of continuously differentiable geodesics (in the sense of Filippov) and study their interaction with the impulsive wave. Thereby we justify the "$C^1$-matching procedure" used in the literature to derive their explicit form.
The problem of the flat limits of the scalar and spinor fields on the de Sitter expanding universe is considered in the rest frame vacuum where the frequencies are separated in rest frames as in special relativity. The phases of the fundamental solutions of these fields are regularized in order to obtain Minkowskian flat limits. New expressions of scalar mode functions or Dirac spinors reaching natural flat limits are given in the rest frame vacuum and suitable approximate formulas are proposed. In this manner the flat limit is correctly defined for the entire quantum theory since the one-part…
The quantum nature of the Big Bang is reexamined in the framework of Loop Quantum Cosmology. The strict application of a regularization procedure to the Hamiltonian, originally developed for the Hamiltonian in loop quantum gravity, leads to a qualitative modification of the bounce paradigm. Quantum gravity effects still lead to a quantum bounce connecting deterministically large classical Universes. However, the evolution features a large epoch of de Sitter Universe, with emergent cosmological constant of Planckian order, smoothly transiting into a flat expanding Universe.
All non-twisting Petrov-type N solutions of vacuum Einstein field equations with cosmological constant Lambda are summarized. They are shown to belong either to the non-expanding Kundt class or to the expanding Robinson-Trautman class. Invariant subclasses of each class are defined and the corresponding metrics are given explicitly in suitable canonical coordinates. Relations between the subclasses and their geometrical properties are analyzed. In the subsequent paper these solutions are interpreted as exact gravitational waves propagating in de Sitter or anti-de Sitter spacetimes.
Recently a new time-evolution picture of the Dirac quantum mechanics was defined in charts with spatially flat Robertson-Walker metrics, under the name of Schrödinger picture [I. I. Cotăescu, arXiv:0708.0734] . In the present paper new Dirac quantum modes are found in moving charts of the de Sitter spacetime using the technical advantages offered by this picture. The principal result is a new set of energy eigenspinors which behave as polarized plane waves and form a complete system of orthonormalized solutions of the free Dirac equation.
Constructing an explicit compactification yielding a metastable de Sitter (dS) vacuum in a UV consistent string theory is an incredibly difficult open problem. Motivated by this issue, as well as the conjecture that all non-supersymmetric AdS vacua must decay, we discuss the alternative possibility of realizing an effective four-dimensional dS cosmology on a codimension-one bubble wall separating two AdS$_5$ vacua. The construction further elaborates on the scenario of arXiv:1807.01570, where the aforementioned cosmology arises due to a non-perturbative decay and is embedded in a five-dimensio…
The behaviour of a massive, non-interacting and non-minimally coupled quantised scalar field in an expanding de Sitter background is investigated by solving the field evolution for an arbitrary initial state. In this approach there is no need to choose a vacuum in order to provide a definition for particle states. We conclude that the expanding de Sitter space is a stable equilibrium configuration under small perturbations of the initial conditions. Depending on the initial state, the energy density can approach its asymptotic value from above or below, the latter of which implies a violation …
We construct a piecewise model that gives a physical viable realization of finite-time future singularity for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe within the interacting dark matter--dark energy framework, with the latter one in the form of a variable vacuum energy. The scale factor solutions provided by the model are accommodated in several branches defined in four regions delimited by the scale factor and the effective energy density. A branch starts from a big bang singularity and describes an expanding matter-dominated universe until the sudden future singularity occurs. Th…
We investigate Euclidean wormholes in Einstein gravity with a massless scalar field in de Sitter space. Euclidean wormholes are possible due to the analytic continuation of the time as well as complexification of fields, where we need to impose the classicality after the Wick-rotation to the Lorentzian signatures. For some parameters, wormholes are preferred than Hawking-Moss instantons, and hence wormholes can be more fundamental than Hawking-Moss type instantons. Euclidean wormholes can be interpreted in three ways: (1) classical big bounce, (2) either tunneling from a small to a large unive…
Over the last few years numerous papers concerning analog models for gravity have been published. It was shown that the dynamical equation of several systems (e.g. Bose-Einstein condensates with a sink or a vortex) have the same wave equation as light in a curved-space (e.g. black holes). In the last few months several papers were released which deal with simulations of the universe. In this article the de-Sitter universe will be compared with a freely expanding three-dimensional spherical Bose-Einstein condensate. Initially the condensate is in a harmonic trap, which suddenly will be switched…
A novel but elementary geometric construction produces on the seven-dimensional manifold of rotated spheres in Euclidean three-space a finslerian geometry whose geodesics are interpreted as the paths of free, spinning, spherical particles moving through de Sitter's expanding universe. A particle of nonzero inertial rest mass typically follows a helical track and exhibits behavior remindful of the phenomenon of ``Zitterbewegung'' of spinning electrons first deduced by Schroedinger from Dirac's relativistic wave equation. Its velocity vector and its spin vector precess about the axial direction …
The process of fermion production in the field of a magnetic dipole on a de Sitter expanding universe is analyzed. The amplitude and probability for production of massive fermions are obtained using the exact solution of the Dirac equation written in the momentum-helicity basis. We found that the most probable transitions are those that generate the fermion pair perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. The behavior of the probability is graphically studied for large/small values of the expansion factor, and a detailed analysis of the probability in terms of the angle between the m…
We study the phenomenon of mass loss by a scalar charge -- a point particle that acts a source for a noninteracting scalar field -- in an expanding universe. The charge is placed on comoving world lines of two cosmological spacetimes: a de Sitter universe, and a spatially-flat, matter-dominated universe. In both cases, we find that the particle's rest mass is not a constant, but that it changes in response to the emission of monopole scalar radiation by the particle. In de Sitter spacetime, the particle radiates all of its mass within a finite proper time. In the matter-dominated cosmology, th…
Motivated by recent studies of the one-bubble inflationary universe scenario that predicts a low density, negative curvature universe, we investigate the Euclidean vacuum mode functions of a scalar field in a spatially open chart of de Sitter space which is foliated by hyperbolic time slices. When we consider the possibility of an open inflationary universe, we are faced with the problem of the initial condition for the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton field, because the inflationary era should not last too long to lose every information of the initial condition. In the one-bubble scenario…
