Intrinsic instability at the Bose-Einstein condensation of bosonic quasiparticles in magnetic insulators

备注:
This paper has been withdrawn in present form because ch. 4.1 contains an invalid interpretation of M(H) below Hc, and because the "rounding" in M(H) discussed in 4.3. must be taken with more caution when comparing it to experimental data in ch. 5. Other valid explanations for such a rounding do exist. However, the rest of the manuscript and the main conclusions are still valid and can be cited
Starting from a phenomenological standard energy functional to describe the condensation of a dilute gas of bosonic quasiparticles in magnetic insulators, we find that the inclusion of a perturbation term that explicitly violates the axial symmetry significantly modifies the details of the resulting Bose Einstein condensation. Systems with an originally axial symmetry must show an intrinsic tendency to spontaneously violate this symmetry as soon as the condensation sets in, and the phase transition at the respective critical field may even become of first order. We can explain a number of features in the experimental data of various insulating spin systems, such as a slightly nonlinear magnetization near the critical field as well as hysteresis effects and peculiarities in the energy-level scheme of TlCuCl3. We also offer a consistent explanation for certain anomalies in the magnetocaloric effect and in the magnetization of BaCuSi2O6 by assuming a spontaneous violation of axial symmetry at the magnetic phase transition on an energy scale of about 1 micro-eV. The resulting anisotropy gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum, that inevitably forms at the critical field of all such systems, lifts the linear Goldstone mode and is therefore seriously limiting the lifetime of magnetic condensates to a few nanoseconds at most.
We study the three-dimensional bosonic t-J model, i.e., the t-J model of "bosonic electrons" at finite temperatures. This model describes a system of cold bosonic atoms with two species in an optical lattice. The model is derived from the Hubbard model for very large on-site repulsive interaction between bosons of same species (hard-core nature) and also strong correlations between different species. The operator B_{xσ} for an atom at the site x with a two-component (pseudo-) spin σ(=1,2) is treated as a hard-core boson operator, and represented by a composite of two slave particles; a spinon …
Motivated by recent experimental processes, we systemically investigate strongly correlated spin-1 ultracold bosons trapped in a three-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field. Based on a recently developed bosonic dynamical mean-field theory (BDMFT), we map out complete phase diagrams of the system for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions, where various phases are found as a result of the interplay of spin-dependent interaction and quadratic Zeeman energy. For antiferromagnetic interactions, the system demonstrates competing magnetic orders, i…
Sufficiently dimerized quantum antiferromagnets display elementary S=1 excitations, triplon quasiparticles, protected by a gap at low energies. At higher energies, the triplons may decay into two or more triplons. A strong enough magnetic field induces Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons. For both phenomena the compound IPA-CuCl3 is an excellent model system. Nevertheless no quantitative model was determined so far despite numerous studies. Recent theoretical progress allows us to analyse data of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and of magnetic susceptibility to determine the four magneti…
We propose the concept of fermion condensation in bosonic topological orders in two spatial dimensions. Fermion condensation can be realized as gapped domain walls between bosonic and fermionic topological orders, which are thought of as a real-space phase transitions from bosonic to fermionic topological orders. This generalizes the previous idea of understanding boson condensation as gapped domain walls between bosonic topological orders. We show that generic fermion condensation obeys a Hierarchy Principle by which it can be decomposed into a boson condensation followed by a minimal fermion…
We study the ground-state topology and quasiparticle properties in bosonic Mott insulators with two- dimensional spin-orbit couplings in cold atomic optical lattices. We show that the many-body Chern and spin-Chern number can be expressed as an integral of the quasihole Berry curvatures over the Brillouin zone. Using a strong-coupling perturbation theory, for an experimentally feasible spin-orbit coupling, we compute the Berry curvature and the spin Chern number and find that these quantities can be generated purely by interactions. We also compute the quasiparticle dispersions, spectral weigh…
We investigate the quasiparticle excitation of the bilayer quantum Hall (QH) system at total filling factor $ν_{\mathrm{T}} = 1$ in the limit of negligible interlayer tunneling under tilted magnetic field. We show that the intrinsic quasiparticle excitation is of purely pseudospin origin and solely governed by the inter- and intra-layer electron interactions. A model based on exciton formation successfully explains the quantitative behavior of the quasiparticle excitation gap, demonstrating the existence of a link between the excitonic QH state and the composite fermion liquid. Our results pro…
Bosonic topological insulators (BTI) in three dimensions are symmetry-protected topological phases (SPT) protected by time-reversal and boson number conservation {symmetries}. BTI in three dimensions were first proposed and classified by the group cohomology theory which suggests two distinct root states, each carrying a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index. Soon after, surface anomalous topological orders were proposed to identify different root states of BTI, which even leads to a new BTI root state beyond the group cohomology classification. In this paper, we propose a universal physical mechanism via \tex…
The collective properties of different quasiparticles in various graphene based structures in high magnetic field have been studied. We predict Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and superfluidity of 2D spatially indirect magnetoexcitons in two-layer graphene. The superfluid density and the temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition are shown to be increasing functions of the excitonic density but decreasing functions of magnetic field and the interlayer separation. The instability of the ground state of the interacting 2D indirect magnetoexcitons in a slab of superlattice with alte…
The phase diagram of the $(1 + 1)$-dimensional Gross-Neveu model is reanalyzed for (non-)zero chemical potential and (non-)zero temperature within the mean-field approximation. By investigating the momentum dependence of the bosonic two-point function, the well-known second-order phase transition from the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetric phase to the so-called inhomogeneous phase is detected. In the latter phase the chiral condensate is periodically varying in space and translational invariance is broken. This work is a proof of concept study that confirms that it is possible to correctly localize sec…
We study the three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory of a CP$^1$ spinon (Schwinger boson) field and a Higgs field. It is a bosonic $t$-$J$ model in slave-particle representation, describing the antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg spin model with doped bosonic holes expressed by the Higgs field. The spinon coupling term of the action favors AF long-range order, whereas the holon hopping term in the ferromagnetic channel favors Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of holons. We investigate the phase structure by means of Monte-Carlo simulations and study an interplay of AF order and BEC of holes. …
Quantum spin ice in pyrochlore lattice exemplifies three dimensional frustrated spin systems. In existing studies, Bose-Einstein condensation of bosonic spinons gives rise to magnetically ordered ground state.A truly liquid quantum spin superfluid state that manifests a deconfined Higgs condensate of spinons is demonstrated. This state is shown to occur in the fully antiferromagnetic case of the non-Kramers quantum spin ice with a fluctuations-induced first-order quantum phase transition from the $U(1)$ spin liquid to the spin superfluid. The spin superfluid density jump is obtained analytically.
Recently, there is a considerable study on gapped symmetric phases of bosons that do not break any symmetry. Even without symmetry breaking, the bosons can still be in many exotic new states of matter, such as symmetry-protected trivial (SPT) phases which are short-range entangled and symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases which are long-range entangled. It is well-known that non-interacting fermionic topological insulators are SPT states protected by time-reversal symmetry and U(1) fermion number conservation symmetry. In this paper, we construct three-dimensional exotic phases of bosons …
We study the orbitally frustrated singlet-triplet models that emerge in the context of spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators with $t_{2g}^4$ electronic configuration. In these compounds, low-energy magnetic degrees of freedom can be cast in terms of three-flavor "triplon" operators describing the transitions between spin-orbit entangled $J=0$ ionic ground state and excited $J=1$ levels. In contrast to a conventional, flavor-isotropic O(3) singlet-triplet models, spin-orbit entangled triplon interactions are flavor-and-bond selective and thus highly frustrated. In a honeycomb lattice, we find clos…
Bose condensation is central to our understanding of quantum phases of matter. Here we review Bose condensation in topologically ordered phases (also called topological symmetry breaking), where the condensing bosons have non-trivial mutual statistics with other quasiparticles in the system. We give a non-technical overview of the relationship between the phases before and after condensation, drawing parallels with more familiar symmetry-breaking transitions. We then review two important applications of this phenomenon. First, we describe the equivalence between such condensation transitions a…
We present systematic constructions of tensor-network wavefunctions for bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases respecting both onsite and spatial symmetries. From the classification point of view, our results show that in spatial dimensions $d=1,2,3$, the cohomological bosonic SPT phases protected by a general symmetry group $SG$ involving onsite and spatial symmetries are classified by the cohomology group $H^{d+1}(SG,U(1))$, in which both the time-reversal symmetry and mirror reflection symmetries should be treated as anti-unitary operations. In addition, for every SPT phase pro…
Phase transitions in anyon models in (2+1)-dimensions can be driven by condensation of bosonic particle sectors. We study such condensates in a diagrammatic language and explicitly establish the relation between the states in the fusion spaces of the theory with the condensate, to the states in the parent theory using a new set of mathematical quantities called vertex lifting coefficients (VLCs). These allow one to calculate the full set of topological data ($S$-, $T$-, $R$- and $F$-matrices) in the condensed phase. We provide closed form expressions of the topological data in terms of the VLC…
Identifying and understanding interacting systems that can host non-Abelian topological phases with fractionalized quasiparticles have attracted intense attentions in the past twenty years. Theoretically, it is possible to realize a rich variety of such states by coupling two Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states together through gapping out part of the low energy degrees of freedom. So far, there are some indications, but no robust example has been established in bilayer systems for realizing the non-Abelian state in the past. Here, we present a phase diagram of a double-layer bosonic …
We generalize previously obtained results for the (all orders in the 't Hooft coupling) thermal free energy of bosonic and fermionic large $N$ Chern-Simons theories with fundamental matter, to values of the chemical potential larger than quasiparticle thermal masses. Building on an analysis by Geracie, Goykhman and Son, we present a simple explicit formula for the occupation number for a quasiparticle state of any given energy and charge as a function of the temperature and chemical potential. This formula is a generalization to finite 't Hooft coupling of the famous occupation number formula …
Here we consider an interacting electron-phonon system within the framework of extended Holstein-Hubbard model at strong enough electron-phonon interaction limit in which (bi)polarons are the essential quasiparticles of the system. It is assumed that the electron-phonon interaction is screened and its potential has Yukawa-type analytical form. An effect of screening of the electron-phonon interaction on the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation of the intersite bipolarons is studied for the first time. It is revealed that the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation of intersite bipolaron…
In this paper we focus on the interplay between geometry defects and topological properties in bosonic symmetry protected topological(SPT) phases. We start from eight copies of 3D time-reversal($\mathcal{T}$) invariant topological superconductors(TSC) on a crystal lattice. We melt the lattice by condensation of disclinations and therefore restore the rotation symmetry. Such disclination condensation procedure confines the fermion and afterwards turns the system into a 3D boson topological liquid crystal(TCL). The low energy effective theory of this crystalline-liquid transition contains a topo…
