We investigate the transport properties for a Luttinger liquid coupled to two identical Bose-Einstein condensation reservoirs. Using the approach of equation of motion for the Green function of the system, we find that the distance between the two resonant transmission probability peaks of the system is determined by the bosonic interaction strengths, and the sharpness of these resonant peaks is mainly determined by the Rabi frequency and phase of the Bose-Einstein condensation reservoir. These results for the proposed system involving a Luttinger liquid may build a bridge between the controling transport properties of cold atom in atom physics and the interacting boson transport in low-dimensional condensed matter physics.
We propose a formalism which uses boundary conditions imposed on the Luttinger liquid (LL) to describe the transport properties of a LL coupled to reservoirs. The various boundary conditions completely determine linear transport in the joint system reservoirs+LL. As an illustration we consider an exactly solvable microscopic model in a multi-terminal geometry for which such boundary conditions can be explicitly derived; in this model the Landauer-Büttiker formalism fails: if it were valid, the relation between the conductance matrix elements and the reflection and transmission coefficients cou…
We develop the renormalization group theory of the conductances of N-lead junctions of spinless Luttinger-liquid wires as functions of bias voltages applied to N independent Fermi-liquid reservoirs. Based on the perturbative results up to second order in the interaction we demonstrate that the conductances obey scaling. The corresponding renormalization group $β$ functions are derived up to second order.
We consider a Luttinger liquid (LL) connected to two reservoirs when the two sample-reservoir interface resistances $R_{S}$ and $R_{D}$ are arbitrary (not necessarily quantized at half-the-quantum of resistance). We compute exactly the dynamical impedance of a Luttinger liquid and generalize earlier expressions for its dynamical conductance in the following situations. (i) We first consider a gated Luttinger liquid. It is shown that the Luttinger liquid parameters $u$ and $K$ and the interface resistances $R_{S}$ and $% R_{D}$ can be experimentally determined by measuring both the dynamical co…
We determine the phase diagram of copper nitrate Cu(NO$_3$)$_2\cdot$2.5D$_2$O in the context of quantum phase transitions and novel states of matter. We establish this compound as an ideal candidate to study quasi-1D Luttinger liquids, 3D Bose-Einstein-Condensation of triplons, and the crossover between 1D and 3D physics. Magnetocaloric effect, magnetization, and neutron scattering data provide clear evidence for transitions into a Luttinger liquid regime and a 3D long-range ordered phase as function of field and temperature. Theoretical simulations of this model material allow us to fully est…
The transport dynamics of a quenched Luttinger liquid tunnel-coupled to a fermionic reservoir is investigated. In the transient dynamics, we show that for a sudden quench of the electron interaction universal power-law decay in time of the tunneling current occurs, ascribed to the presence of entangled compound excitations created by the quench. In sharp contrast to the usual non universal power-law behavior of a zero-temperature non-quenched Luttinger liquid, the steady state tunneling current is ohmic and can be explained in terms of an effective quench-activated heating of the system. Our s…
We analyze the spin relaxation time $1/T_1$ for a system made of weakly coupled one dimensional ladders. This system allows to probe the dimensional crossover between a Luttinger liquid and a Bose-Einstein condensateof magnons. We obtain the temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ in the various dimensional regimes, and discuss the experimental consequences.
We study the interplay of interactions and disorder in a one-dimensional fermion lattice coupled adiabatically to infinite reservoirs. We employ both the functional renormalization group (FRG) as well as matrix product state techniques, which serve as an accurate benchmark for small systems. Using the FRG, we compute the length- and temperature-dependence of the conductance averaged over $10^4$ samples for lattices as large as $10^{5}$ sites. We identify regimes in which non-ohmic power law behavior can be observed and demonstrate that the corresponding exponents can be understood by adapting …
Uniform-field effects for frustrated odd-leg integer-spin tubes (cylinder type spin systems) are investigated in the weak interchain-coupling regime. We predict that, as the field exceeds the spin gap, a two-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) appears due to the condensation of the doubly degenerate lowest magnons. Furthermore, it is argued that when the uniform field is so strong that the second lowest magnons are also condensed, the two-component TLL is destroyed and a new one-component TLL emerges. This quantum phase transition may be detected as a magnetization cusp.
We develop a detailed theory for spin transport in a one-dimensional quantum wire described by Luttinger liquid theory. A hydrodynamic description for the quantum wire is supplemented by boundary conditions taking into account the exchange coupling between the magnetization of ferromagnetic reservoirs and the boundary magnetization in the wire. Spin-charge separation is shown to imply drastic and qualitative consequences for spin-dependent transport. In particular, the spin accumulation effect is quenched except for fine-tuned parameter regimes. We propose several feasible setups involving an …
The electrical current through an arbitrary junction connecting quantum wires of spinless interacting fermions is calculated in fermionic representation. The wires are adiabatically attached to two reservoirs at chemical potentials differing by the applied voltage bias. The relevant scale-dependent contributions in perturbation theory in the interaction up to infinite order are evaluated and summed up. The result allows one to construct renormalization group equations for the conductance as a function of voltage (or temperature, wire length). There are two fixed points at which the conductance…
Fractionally charged quasiparticles in edge states, are expected to condense to a chiral Luttinger liquid (CLL). We studied their condensation by measuring the conductance and shot noise due to an artificial backscatterer embedded in their path. At sufficiently low temperatures backscattering events were found to be strongly correlated, producing a highly non-linear current-voltage characteristic and a non-classical shot noise - both are expected in a CLL. When, however, the impinging beam of quasiparticles was made dilute, either artificially via an additional weak backscatterer or by increas…
We present a detailed theoretical investigation of transport through a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) in good contact to metal leads where weak backscattering at the interfaces between SWNT and source and drain reservoirs gives rise to electronic Fabry-Perot (FP) oscillations in conductance and shot noise. We include the electron-electron interaction and the finite length of the SWNT within the inhomogeneous Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) model and treat the non-equilibrium effects due to an applied bias voltage within the Keldysh approach. In low-frequency transport properties, the TLL…
One-dimensional interacting electrons in a quantum wire connected to reservoirs are studied theoretically. The difference in the Tomonaga-Luttinger interaction constants between the wire (g) and reservoirs $(g_{\infty})$ produces the cross-correlation between the right- and left-going chiral components of the charge density wave field. The low energy asymptotics of this field correlator, which is determined by (g) and $(g_{\infty})$, specifies renormalization of physical quantities. We have found that charge of the carriers in the shot noise is determined by $g_\infty$ (no renormalization for …
We calculate the conductances of a three-way junction of spinless Luttinger-liquid wires as functions of bias voltages applied to three independent Fermi-liquid reservoirs. In particular, we consider the setup that is characteristic of a tunneling experiment, in which the strength of electron-electron interactions in one of the arms of the junction ("tunneling tip") is different from that in the other two arms (which together form a "main wire"). The scaling dependence of the two independent conductances on bias voltages is determined within a fermionic renormalization-group approach in the li…
We study a spinor (two-component) Bose gas confined in a one-dimensional double-valley optical lattice which has a double-well structure in momentum space. Based on field theory analysis, it is found that spinor bosons in the double-valley band may form a spin-charge mixed chiral spin quasicondensate under certain conditions. Our numerical calculations in a concrete $π$-flux triangular ladder system confirm the robustness of the chiral spin order against interactions and quantum fluctuations. This exotic atomic Bose-Einstein condensate exhibits spatially staggered spin loop currents without an…
Non-equilibrium transport properties of charge and spin sector of two edges of a quantum spin Hall insulator are investigated theoretically in a four-terminal configuration. A simple duality relation between charge and spin sector is found for two helical Tomonaga Luttinger liquids (hTTLs) connected to non-interacting electron reservoirs. If the hTLLs on opposite edges are coupled locally or non-locally, the mixing between them yields interesting physics where spin information can be easily detected by a charge measurement and vice versa. Particularly, we show how a pure spin density in the ab…
We study the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional hard-core bosonic model with nearest-neighbor interactions (XXZ model) where every site is coupled Ohmically to an independent but identical reservoir, hereby generalizing spin-boson models to interacting spin-boson systems. We show that a bath-induced Bose metal phase can occur in the ground state phase diagram away from half filling. This phase is compressible, gapless, and conducting but not superfluid. At haf-filling, only a Luttinger liquid and a charge density wave are found. The phase transition between them is of Kosterlitz-T…
We describe microscopic theory for the quantum transport through finite interacting systems connected to noninteracting leads. It can be applied to small systems such as quantum dots, quantum wires, atomic chain, molecule, and so forth. The Keldysh formalism is introduced to study the nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, and general properties of the nonequilibrium Green's functions are provided. We apply the formulated to an out-of-equilibrium Anderson model that has been used widely for the Kondo effect in quantum dots. In the linear-response regime the Kubo formalism still has an adva…
We study charge transport through $N$-lead junctions ($N\geq 3$) of spinless Luttinger liquid wires with bias voltages applied to Fermi-liquid reservoirs. In particular, we consider a Y junction, which is a setup characteristic of the tunneling experiment. In this setup, the strength of electron-electron interactions in one of the arms ("tunneling tip") is different from that in the other two arms (which form together the "main wire"). For a generic single-particle $S$ matrix of the junction, we find that the bias voltage $V$ applied---even symmetrically---to the main wire generates a current …

We have found solution to a model of tunneling between a multi-channel Fermi liquid reservoir and an edge of the principal fractional quantum Hall liquid (FQHL) in the strong coupling limit. The solution explains how the absence of the time-reversal symmetry at high energies due to chiral edge propagation makes the universal two-terminal conductance of the FQHL fractionally quantized and different from that of a 1D Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid wire, where a similar model but preserving the time-reversal symmetry predicts unsuppressed free-electron conductance.
