Recently data from PAMELA, ATIC, FERMI-LAT and HESS show that there are $e^{\pm}$ excesses in the cosmic ray energy spectrum. PAMELA observed excesses only in $e^+$, but not in anti-proton spectrum. ATIC, FERMI-LAT and HESS observed excesses in $e^++e^-$ spectrum, but the detailed shapes are different which requires future experimental observations to pin down the correct data set. Nevertheless a lot of efforts have been made to explain the observed $e^\pm$ excesses, and also why PAMELA only observed excesses in $e^+$ but not in anti-proton. In this brief review we discuss one of the most popular mechanisms to explain the data, the dark matter annihilation. It has long been known that about 23% of our universe is made of relic dark matter. If the relic dark matter was thermally produced, the annihilation rate is constrained resulting in the need of a large boost factor to explain the data. We will discuss in detail how a large boost factor can be obtained by the Sommerfeld and Briet-Wigner enhancement mechanisms. Some implications for particle physics model buildings will also be discussed.
In hidden sector models, dark matter does not directly couple to the particle content of the Standard Model, strongly suppressing rates at direct detection experiments, while still allowing for large signals from annihilation. In this paper, we conduct an extensive study of hidden sector dark matter, covering a wide range of dark matter spins, mediator spins, interaction diagrams, and annihilation final states, in each case determining whether the annihilations are s-wave (thus enabling efficient annihilation in the universe today). We then go on to consider a variety of portal interactions th…
The presence of an excess gamma-ray signal toward the Galactic center (GC) has now been well established, and is known as the GC excess. Leading explanations for the signal include mis-modeling of the Galactic diffuse emission along the line of sight, an unresolved population of millisecond pulsars, and/or the annihilation of dark matter (DM). Recently, evidence for another excess gamma-ray signal has been reported toward the outer halo of M31. In this work we interpret the excess signals from both the GC and outer halo of M31 in the framework of DM annihilation, and show that the two spectra …
The precise measurements of energy spectra of cosmic ray positrons and/or electrons by recent experiments show clear excesses above 10 GeV. Moreover, a potential sharp spectral feature was suggested by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) data. These results inspire quite a number of discussions on the connection with either the annihilation/decay of dark matter (DM) or the astrophysical origins. Here we discuss a DM scenario in which DM particles could annihilate and decay into standard model particle pairs simultaneously. In this model, the peak structure is due to the DM annihilation i…
We propose a novel mechanism to explain the positron excesses, which are observed by satellite-based telescopes including PAMELA and AMS-02, in dark matter (DM) scenarios. The novelty behind the proposal is that it makes direct use of DM around the Galactic Center where DM populates most densely, allowing us to avoid tensions from cosmological and astrophysical measurements. The key ingredients of this mechanism include DM annihilation into unstable states with a very long laboratory-frame life time and their "retarded" decay near the Earth to electron-positron pair(s) possibly with other (in)…
For the newly discovered $W$-boson mass anomaly, one of the simplest dark matter (DM) models that can account for the anomaly without violating other astrophysical/experimental constraints is the inert two Higgs doublet model, in which the DM mass ($m_{S}$) is found to be within $\sim 54-74$ GeV. In this model, the annihilation of DM via $SS\to b\bar{b}$ and $SS\to WW^{*}$ would produce antiprotons and gamma rays, and may account for the excesses identified previously in both particles. Motivated by this, we re-analyze the AMS-02 antiproton and Fermi-LAT Galactic center gamma-ray data. For the…
Motivated by various excesses observed by the Fermi-LAT and AMS collaborations, we perform a detailed analysis of QCD uncertainties on particle spectra from dark-matter annihilation (or decay) into jets. When annihilated to SM particles, the final-state annihilation products undergo various complicated processes such as QED and QCD bremsstrahlung, hadronisation, and hadron decays. These processes contain some intrinsic uncertainties which are usually difficult to model and which are neglected in physical analyses. First, we perform several re-tunings of the fragmentation function parameters. T…
The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite detector announced its first result for measuring the cosmic-ray electron/positron (CRE) energy spectrum up to 4.6TeV, including a tentative peak-like event excess at (1.3-1.5)TeV. In this work, we uncover a significant hidden excess in the DAMPE CRE spectrum over the energy range (0.6-1.1)TeV, which has a non-peak-like structure. We propose a new mechanism to explain this excess by a set of 1.5TeV $μ^\pm$ events with subsequent decays into $e^\pm$ plus neutrinos. For explaining this new excess together with the peak excess around 1.4TeV, we …
A brief review of the available experimental and theoretical results on the production of the $χ_{Q1}$ states in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and photon-photon $γγ^*$ interactions is presented. Future data on the production of the $χ_{c1}(1P)$, $χ_{c1}(3872)$, $χ_{c1} (4140)$, $χ_{c1}(4274)$, $χ_{c1}(4685)$, $χ_{b1} (1P)$, $χ_{b1}(2P )$, and $χ_{b1}(3P)$ resonances in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and $γγ^*$ interactions will help the development and unification of theoretical predictions related to the electroweak decays of heavy quarkonia, the reduction of their spread and model uncertainties.
Using $γ$-ray observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies to test the possible common origin of the W-boson mass anomaly and the GeV $γ$-ray/antiproton excesses
The direct measurements of the cosmic electron-positron spectrum around 1 TeV made by DAMPE have induced many theoretical speculations about possible excesses in the data above the standard astrophysical predictions that might have the dark matter (DM) origin. These attempts mainly fall into two categories: i) DM annihilation (or decay) in the Galactic halo producing the broad spectrum excess; ii) DM annihilation in the nearby compact subhalo producing the sharp peak at 1.4 TeV. We investigate the gamma-ray emission accompanying $e^+e^-$ production in DM annihilation, as well as various theore…
Precision measurements of the positron flux in cosmic ray have revealed an unexplained bump in the spectrum around $E\simeq 300\,\mathrm{GeV}$, not clearly attributable to known astrophysical processes. We propose annihilation of dark matter of mass $m_χ= 780\,\mathrm{GeV}$ with a late-time cross section $σv = 4.63\times 10^{-24}\,\mathrm{cm^3\,s^{-1}}$ as a possible source. The nonmonotonic dependence of the annihilation rate on dark matter velocity, owing to a selective $p$-wave Sommerfeld enhancement, allows such a large signal from the Milky Way without violating corresponding constraints …
The Fermi gamma-ray spectrum of the inner galaxy: Implications for annihilating dark matter
