We consider a communication network with a single source that has a set of messages and two terminals where each terminal is interested in an arbitrary subset of messages at the source. A tight capacity region for this problem is demonstrated. We show by a simple graph-theoretic procedure that any such problem can be solved by performing network coding on the subset of messages that are requested by both the terminals and that routing is sufficient for transferring the remaining messages.
We consider multi-terminal source coding with a single encoder and multiple decoders where either the encoder or the decoders can take cost constrained actions which affect the quality of the side information present at the decoders. For the scenario where decoders take actions, we characterize the rate-cost trade-off region for lossless source coding, and give an achievability scheme for lossy source coding for two decoders which is optimum for a variety of special cases of interest. For the case where the encoder takes actions, we characterize the rate-cost trade-off for a class of lossless …
Consider the problem of source coding in networks with multiple receiving terminals, each having access to some kind of side information. In this case, standard coding techniques are either prohibitively complex to decode, or require network-source coding separation, resulting in sub-optimal transmission rates. To alleviate this problem, we offer a joint network-source coding scheme based on matrix sparsification at the code design phase, which allows the terminals to use an efficient decoding procedure (syndrome decoding using LDPC), despite the network coding throughout the network. Via a no…
The three-node multiterminal lossy source coding problem is investigated. We derive an inner bound to the general rate-distortion region of this problem which is a natural extension of the seminal work by Kaspi'85 on the interactive two-terminal source coding problem. It is shown that this (rather involved) inner bound contains several rate-distortion regions of some relevant source coding settings. In this way, besides the non-trivial extension of the interactive two terminal problem, our results can be seen as a generalization and hence unification of several previous works in the field. Spe…
It is shown that polar coding schemes achieve the known achievable rate regions for several multi-terminal communications problems including lossy distributed source coding, multiple access channels and multiple descriptions coding. The results are valid for arbitrary alphabet sizes (binary or nonbinary) and arbitrary distributions (symmetric or asymmetric).
We study a new class of codes for Gaussian multi-terminal source and channel coding. These codes are designed using the statistical framework of high-dimensional linear regression and are called Sparse Superposition or Sparse Regression codes. Codewords are linear combinations of subsets of columns of a design matrix. These codes were recently introduced by Barron and Joseph and shown to achieve the channel capacity of AWGN channels with computationally feasible decoding. They have also recently been shown to achieve the optimal rate-distortion function for Gaussian sources. In this paper, we …
The optimal causal coding of a partially observed Markov process is studied, where the cost to be minimized is a bounded, non-negative, additive, measurable single-letter function of the source and the receiver output. A structural result is obtained extending Witsenhausen's and Walrand-Varaiya's structural results on optimal real-time coders to a partially observed setting. The decentralized (multi-terminal) setup is also considered. For the case where the source is an i.i.d. process, it is shown that the optimal decentralized causal coding of correlated observations problem admits a solution…
We investigate binary block-codes (BBC). A BBC is defined as a vector of Boolean functions. We consider BBCs which are generated randomly, and using single-letter distributions. We characterize the vector of dependency spectrums of these BBCs. We use this vector to upper-bound the correlation between the outputs of two distributed BBCs. Finally, the upper-bound is used to show that the large blocklength single-letter coding schemes in the literature are sub-optimal in some multiterminal communication settings.
We present the problem of two-terminal source coding with Common Sum Reconstruction (CSR). Consider two terminals, each with access to one of two correlated sources. Both terminals want to reconstruct the sum of the two sources under some average distortion constraint, and the reconstructions at two terminals must be identical with high probability. In this paper, we develop inner and outer bounds to the achievable rate distortion region of the CSR problem for a doubly symmetric binary source. We employ existing achievability results for Steinberg's common reconstruction and Wyner-Ziv's source…
A general multi-terminal source code and a general multi-terminal channel code are presented. Constrained-random-number generators with sparse matrices, which are building blocks for the code construction, are used in the construction of both encoders and decoders. Achievable regions for source coding and channel coding are derived in terms of entropy functions, where the capacity region for channel coding provides an alternative to the region of [Somekh-Baruch and Verdú, ISIT2006].
A new ensemble of structured codes is introduced. These codes are called Quasi Linear Codes (QLC). The QLC's are constructed by taking subsets of linear codes. They have a looser structure compared to linear codes and are not closed under addition. We argue that these codes provide gains in terms of achievable Rate-Distortions (RD) in different multi-terminal source coding problems. We derive the necessary covering bounds for analyzing the performance of QLC's. We then consider the Multiple-Descriptions (MD) problem, and prove through an example that the application of QLC's gives an improved …
Network coding in geometric space, a new research direction also known as Space Information Flow, is a promising research field which shows the superiority of network coding in space over routing in space. Present literatures proved that given six terminal nodes, network coding in space is strictly superior to routing in space in terms of single-source multicast in regular (5+1) model, in which five terminal nodes forms a regular pentagon centered at a terminal node. In order to compare the performance between network coding in space and routing in space, this paper quantitatively studies two …
Since the publication of Shannon's theory of one terminal source coding, a number of interesting extensions have been derived by researchers such as Slepian-Wolf, Wyner, Ahlswede-Körner, Wyner-Ziv and Berger-Yeung. Specifically, the achievable rate or rate-distortion region has been described by a first order information-theoretic functional of the source statistics in each of the above cases. At the same time several problems have also remained unsolved. Notable two terminal examples include the joint distortion problem, where both sources are reconstructed under a combined distortion criteri…
A unified graphical approach to random coding for any memoryless, single-hop, K-user channel with or without common information is defined through two steps. The first step is user virtualization: each user is divided into multiple virtual sub-users according to a chosen rate-splitting strategy. This results in an enhanced channel with a possibly larger number of users for which more coding possibilities are available and for which common messages to any subset of users can be encoded. Following user virtualization, the message of each user in the enhanced model is coded using a chosen combina…
In this work we improve on the bounds presented by Li&Li for network coding gain in the undirected case. A tightened bound for the undirected multicast problem with three terminals is derived. An interesting result shows that with fractional routing, routing throughput can achieve at least 75% of the coding throughput. A tighter bound for the general multicast problem with any number of terminals shows that coding gain is strictly less than 2. Our derived bound depends on the number of terminals in the multicast network and approaches 2 for arbitrarily large number of terminals.
We consider a directed acyclic network with three sources and three terminals such that each source independently generates one symbol from a given field $F$ and each terminal wants to receive the sum (over $F$) of the source symbols. Each link in the network is considered to be error-free and delay-free and can carry one symbol from the field in each use. We call such a network a 3-source 3-terminal {\it $(3s/3t)$ sum-network}. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a $3s/3t$ sum-network to allow all the terminals to receive the sum of the source symbols over \textit{…
We consider a network (that is capable of network coding) with a set of sources and terminals, where each terminal is interested in recovering the sum of the sources. Considering directed acyclic graphs with unit capacity edges and independent, unit-entropy sources, we show the rate region when (a) there are two sources and $n$ terminals, and (b) $n$ sources and two terminals. In these cases as long as there exists at least one path from each source to each terminal we demonstrate that there exists a valid assignment of coding vectors to the edges such that the terminals can recover the sum of…
A sum-network is a directed acyclic network where each source independently generates one symbol from a given field $\mathbb F$ and each terminal wants to receive the sum $($over $\mathbb F)$ of the source symbols. For sum-networks with two sources or two terminals, the solvability is characterized by the connection condition of each source-terminal pair [3]. A necessary and sufficient condition for the solvability of the $3$-source $3$-terminal $(3$s$/3$t$)$ sum-networks was given by Shenvi and Dey [6]. However, the general case of arbitrary sources/sinks is still open. In this paper, we inve…
A unified approach to the derivation of rate regions for single-hop memoryless networks is presented. A general transmission scheme for any memoryless, single-hop, k-user channel with or without common information, is defined through two steps. The first step is user virtualization: each user is divided into multiple virtual sub-users according to a chosen rate-splitting strategy which preserves the rates of the original messages. This results in an enhanced channel with a possibly larger number of users for which more coding possibilities are available. Moreover, user virtualization provides …
We propose an adaptive lossy joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme for sending correlated sources over two-terminal discrete-memoryless two-way channels (DM-TWCs). The main idea is to couple the independent operations of the terminals via an adaptive coding mechanism, which can mitigate cross-interference resulting from simultaneous channel transmissions and concurrently exploit the sources' correlation to reduce the end-to-end reconstruction distortions. Our adaptive JSCC scheme not only subsumes existing lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous communication but also improves their …
We consider secure multi-terminal source coding problems in the presence of a public helper. Two main scenarios are studied: 1) source coding with a helper where the coded side information from the helper is eavesdropped by an external eavesdropper; 2) triangular source coding with a helper where the helper is considered as a public terminal. We are interested in how the helper can support the source transmission subject to a constraint on the amount of information leaked due to its public nature. We characterize the tradeoff between transmission rate, incurred distortion, and information leak…
We study the network coding problem of sum-networks with 3 sources and n terminals (3s/nt sum-network), for an arbitrary positive integer n, and derive a sufficient and necessary condition for the solvability of a family of so-called terminal-separable sum-network. Both the condition of terminal-separable and the solvability of a terminal-separable sum-network can be decided in polynomial time. Consequently, we give another necessary and sufficient condition, which yields a faster (O(|E|) time) algorithm than that of Shenvi and Dey ([18], (O(|E|^3) time), to determine the solvability of the 3s…
We consider the problem of rate and power allocation for a sensor network under the pairwise distributed source coding constraint. For noiseless source-terminal channels, we show that the minimum sum rate assignment can be found by finding a minimum weight arborescence in an appropriately defined directed graph. For orthogonal noisy source-terminal channels, the minimum sum power allocation can be found by finding a minimum weight matching forest in a mixed graph. Numerical results are presented for both cases showing that our solutions always outperform previously proposed solutions. The gain…
A two-terminal interactive function computation problem with alternating messages is studied within the framework of distributed block source coding theory. For any finite number of messages, a single-letter characterization of the sum-rate-distortion function was established in previous works using standard information-theoretic techniques. This, however, does not provide a satisfactory characterization of the infinite-message limit, which is a new, unexplored dimension for asymptotic-analysis in distributed block source coding involving potentially an infinite number of infinitesimal-rate me…
We consider the multiple unicast problem with three source-terminal pairs over directed acyclic networks with unit-capacity edges. The three $s_i-t_i$ pairs wish to communicate at unit-rate via network coding. The connectivity between the $s_i - t_i$ pairs is quantified by means of a connectivity level vector, $[k_1 k_2 k_3]$ such that there exist $k_i$ edge-disjoint paths between $s_i$ and $t_i$. In this work we attempt to classify networks based on the connectivity level. It can be observed that unit-rate transmission can be supported by routing if $k_i \geq 3$, for all $i = 1, \dots, 3$. In…
For a multi-source multi-terminal noiseless network, the key-dissemination problem involves the task of multicasting a secret key K from the network sources to its terminals. As in secure multicast network-coding, in the key-dissemination problem the source nodes have access to independent randomness and, as the network is noiseless, the resulting key K is a function of the sources' information. However, different from traditional forms of multicast, in key-dissemination the key K need not consist of source messages, but rather may be any function of the information generated at the sources, a…
We study the problem of receive beamforming in uplink cascade multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems as an instance of that of cascade multiterminal source coding for lossy function computation. Using this connection, we develop two coding schemes for the second and show that their application leads to beamforming schemes for the first. In the first coding scheme, each terminal in the cascade sends a description of the source that it observes; the decoder reconstructs all sources, lossily, and then computes an estimate of the desired function. This scheme improves upon standard routing …
In two-way OFDM relay, carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) between relay and terminal nodes introduce severe intercarrier interference (ICI) which degrades the performance of traditional physical-layer network coding (PLNC). Moreover, traditional algorithm to compute the posteriori probability in the presence of ICI would incur prohibitive computational complexity at the relay node. In this paper, we proposed a two-step asynchronous PLNC scheme at the relay to mitigate the effect of CFOs. In the first step, we intend to reconstruct the ICI component, in which space-alternating generalized expecta…
Csiszar and Narayan[3] defined the notion of secret key capacity for multiple terminals, characterized it as a linear program with Slepian-Wolf constraints of the related source coding problem of communication for omniscience, and upper bounded it by some information divergence expression from the joint to the product distribution of the private observations. This paper proves that the bound is tight for the important case when all users are active, using the polymatroidal structure[6] underlying the source coding problem. When some users are not active, the bound may not be tight. This paper …
We consider the problem of lossy source coding with side information under a privacy constraint that the reconstruction sequence at a decoder should be kept secret to a certain extent from another terminal such as an eavesdropper, a sender, or a helper. We are interested in how the reconstruction privacy constraint at a particular terminal affects the rate-distortion tradeoff. In this work, we allow the decoder to use a random mapping, and give inner and outer bounds to the rate-distortion-equivocation region for different cases where the side information is available non-causally and causally…
This paper investigates the interplay between cooperation and achievable rates in multi-terminal networks. Cooperation refers to the process of nodes working together to relay data toward the destination. There is an inherent tradeoff between achievable information transmission rates and the level of cooperation, which is determined by how many nodes are involved and how the nodes encode/decode the data. We illustrate this trade-off by studying information-theoretic decode-forward based coding strategies for data transmission in multi-terminal networks. Decode-forward strategies are usually di…
An adaptive joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme is presented for transmitting correlated sources over discrete-memoryless two-way channels subject to distortion constraints. The proposed JSCC scheme makes use of the previously transmitted and received channel signals as well as the sources' correlation to facilitate coordination between terminals. It is shown that the adaptive scheme strictly subsumes prior lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous transmission and yields a new adaptive separate source-channel coding result. Two examples are given to show the scheme's advantages.
In a series of papers N. Ma and P. Ishwar (2011-13) considered a range of distributed source coding problems that arise in the context of iterative computation of functions, characterizing the region of achievable communication rates. We consider the problems of interactive computation of functions by two terminals and interactive computation in a collocated network, showing that the rate regions for both these problems can be achieved using several rounds of polar-coded transmissions.
We show that optimal protocols for noisy channel coding of public or private information over either classical or quantum channels can be directly constructed from two more primitive information-theoretic tools: privacy amplification and information reconciliation, also known as data compression with side information. We do this in the one-shot scenario of structureless resources, and formulate our results in terms of the smooth min- and max-entropy. In the context of classical information theory, this shows that essentially all two-terminal protocols can be reduced to these two primitives, wh…
We consider the network communication scenario, over directed acyclic networks with unit capacity edges in which a number of sources $s_i$ each holding independent unit-entropy information $X_i$ wish to communicate the sum $\sum{X_i}$ to a set of terminals $t_j$. We show that in the case in which there are only two sources or only two terminals, communication is possible if and only if each source terminal pair $s_i/t_j$ is connected by at least a single path. For the more general communication problem in which there are three sources and three terminals, we prove that a single path connecting…

The problem of secure source coding with multiple terminals is extended by considering a remote source whose noisy measurements are the correlated random variables used for secure source reconstruction. The main additions to the problem include 1) all terminals noncausally observe a noisy measurement of the remote source; 2) a private key is available to all legitimate terminals; 3) the public communication link between the encoder and decoder is rate-limited; and 4) the secrecy leakage to the eavesdropper is measured with respect to the encoder input, whereas the privacy leakage is measured w…
We study the effects of introducing a feedback channel in the erasure source-broadcast problem for the case of three receivers. In our problem formulation, we wish to transmit a binary source to three users over the erasure broadcast channel when causal feedback is universally available to the transmitter and all three receivers. Each receiver requires a certain fraction of the source sequence, and we are interested in the minimum latency, or transmission time, required to serve them all. We propose a queue-based hybrid digital-analog coding scheme that achieves optimal performance for the dur…
This paper investigates a source coding problem in which two terminals communicating through a relay wish to estimate one another's source within some distortion constraint. The relay has access to side information that is correlated with the sources. Two different schemes based on the order of communication, \emph{distributed source coding/delivery} and \emph{two cascaded rounds}, are proposed and inner and outer bounds for the resulting rate-distortion regions are provided. Examples are provided to show that neither rate-distortion region includes the other one.
The problem of secure lossy source-channel wiretapping with arbitrarily correlated side informations at both receivers is investigated. This scenario consists of an encoder (referred to as Alice) that wishes to compress a source and send it through a noisy channel to a legitimate receiver (referred to as Bob). In this context, Alice must simultaneously satisfy the desired requirements on the distortion level at Bob, and the equivocation rate at the eavesdropper (referred to as Eve). This setting can be seen as a generalization of the conventional problems of secure source coding with side info…
We present a novel cross layer approach to random access (RA) that combines physical-layer network coding (PLNC) with multiuser detection (MUD). PLNC and MUD are applied jointly at the physical level in order to extract any linear combination of messages experiencing a collision. The set of combinations extracted from a whole frame is then processed by the receiver to recover the original packets. A simple pre-coding stage at the transmitting terminals allows the receiver to further increase system diversity. We derive an analytical bound on the system throughput and present simulation results…
We consider a directed acyclic network where there are two source-terminal pairs and the terminals need to receive the symbols generated at the respective sources. Each source independently generates an i.i.d. random process over the same alphabet. Each edge in the network is error-free, delay-free, and can carry one symbol from the alphabet per use. We give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for being able to simultaneously satisfy the unicast requirements of the two source-terminal pairs at rate-pair $(1,1)$ using vector network coding. The condition is also sufficient for doing thi…
In this paper, we establish a new bound tying together the effective length and the maximum correlation between the outputs of an arbitrary pair of Boolean functions which operate on two sequences of correlated random variables. We derive a new upper bound on the correlation between the outputs of these functions. The upper bound may find applications in problems in many areas which deal with common information. We build upon Witsenhausen's result on maximum correlation. The present upper bound takes into account the effective length of the Boolean functions in characterizing the correlation. …
Practical random network coding based schemes for multicast include a header in each packet that records the transformation between the sources and the terminal. The header introduces an overhead that can be significant in certain scenarios. In previous work, parity check matrices of error control codes along with error decoding were used to reduce this overhead. In this work we propose novel packet formats that allow us to use erasure decoding and list decoding. Both schemes have a smaller overhead compared to the error decoding based scheme, when the number of sources combined in a packet is…
In this paper, we address the problem of characterizing the instances of the multiterminal source model of Csiszár and Narayan in which communication from all terminals is needed for establishing a secret key of maximum rate. We give an information-theoretic sufficient condition for identifying such instances. We believe that our sufficient condition is in fact an exact characterization, but we are only able to prove this in the case of the three-terminal source model. We also give a relatively simple criterion for determining whether or not our condition holds for a given multiterminal source…
In the distributed coding of correlated sources, the problem of characterizing the joint probability distribution of a pair of random variables satisfying an n-letter Markov chain arises. The exact solution of this problem is intractable. In this paper, we seek a single-letter necessary condition for this n-letter Markov chain. To this end, we propose a new data processing inequality on a new measure of correlation by means of spectrum analysis. Based on this new data processing inequality, we provide a single-letter necessary condition for the required joint probability distribution. We apply…
This work considers the quadratic Gaussian multiterminal (MT) source coding problem and provides a new sufficient condition for the Berger-Tung sum-rate bound to be tight. The converse proof utilizes a set of virtual remote sources given which the MT sources are block independent with a maximum block size of two. The given MT source coding problem is then related to a set of two-terminal problems with matrix-distortion constraints, for which a new lower bound on the sum-rate is given. Finally, a convex optimization problem is formulated and a sufficient condition derived for the optimal BT sch…
Relay networks aid in increasing the rate of communication from source to destination. However, the capacity of even a three-terminal relay channel is an open problem. In this work, we propose a new lower bound for the capacity of the three-terminal relay channel with destination-to-source feedback in the presence of correlated noise. Our lower bound improves on the existing bounds in the literature. We then extend our lower bound to general relay network configurations using an arbitrary number of filter-and-forward relay nodes. Such network configurations are common in many multi-hop communi…
We study the effects of introducing a feedback channel in the two-receiver erasure source-broadcast problem in which a binary equiprobable source is to be sent over an erasure broadcast channel to two receivers subject to erasure distortion constraints. The receivers each require a certain fraction of a source sequence, and we are interested in the minimum latency, or transmission time, required to serve them all. We first show that for a two-user broadcast channel, a point-to-point outer bound can always be achieved. We further show that the point-to-point outer bound can also be achieved if …
A randomized covering-packing duality between source and channel coding will be discussed by considering the source coding problem of coding a source with a certain distortion level and by considering a channel which communicates the source within a certain distortion level. An operational view of source-channel separation for communication with a fidelity criterion will be discussed in brief.
We consider the problem of communicating the sum of $m$ sources to $n$ terminals in a directed acyclic network. Recently, it was shown that for a network of unit capacity links with either $m=2$ or $n=2$, the sum of the sources can be communicated to the terminals if and only if every source-terminal pair is connected in the network. We show in this paper that for any finite set of primes, there exists a network where the sum of the sources can be communicated to the terminals only over finite fields of characteristic belonging to that set. As a corollary, this gives networks where the sum can…
A new approach to joint source-channel coding is presented in the context of communicating correlated sources over multiple access channels. Similar to the separation architecture, the joint source-channel coding system architecture in this approach is modular, whereby the source encoding and channel decoding operations are decoupled. However, unlike the separation architecture, the same codeword is used for both source coding and channel coding, which allows the resulting hybrid coding scheme to achieve the performance of the best known joint source-channel coding schemes. Applications of the…
Consider a pair of terminals connected by two independent (feedforward and feedback) Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels, and limited by individual power constraints. The first terminal would like to reliably send information to the second terminal at a given rate. While the reliability in the cases of no feedback and of noiseless feedback is well studied, not much is known about the case of noisy feedback. In this work, we present an interactive scheme that significantly improves the reliability relative to the no-feedback setting, whenever the feedback Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) i…
Jointly Gaussian memoryless sources are observed at N distinct terminals. The goal is to efficiently encode the observations in a distributed fashion so as to enable reconstruction of any one of the observations, say the first one, at the decoder subject to a quadratic fidelity criterion. Our main result is a precise characterization of the rate-distortion region when the covariance matrix of the sources satisfies a "tree-structure" condition. In this situation, a natural analog-digital separation scheme optimally trades off the distributed quantization rate tuples and the distortion in the re…
In this paper, we give a distributed joint source channel coding scheme for arbitrary correlated sources for arbitrary point in the Slepian-Wolf rate region, and arbitrary link capacities using LDPC codes. We consider the Slepian-Wolf setting of two sources and one destination, with one of the sources derived from the other source by some correlation model known at the decoder. Distributed encoding and separate decoding is used for the two sources. We also give a distributed source coding scheme when the source correlation has memory to achieve any point in the Slepian-Wolf rate achievable reg…
We consider a group of m+1 trusted nodes that aim to create a shared secret key K over a network in the presence of a passive eavesdropper, Eve. We assume a linear non-coherent network coding broadcast channel (over a finite field F_q) from one of the honest nodes (i.e., Alice) to the rest of them including Eve. All of the trusted nodes can also discuss over a cost-free public channel which is also overheard by Eve. For this setup, we propose upper and lower bounds for the secret key generation capacity assuming that the field size q is very large. For the case of two trusted terminals (m = 1)…
