Consider the problem of source coding in networks with multiple receiving terminals, each having access to some kind of side information. In this case, standard coding techniques are either prohibitively complex to decode, or require network-source coding separation, resulting in sub-optimal transmission rates. To alleviate this problem, we offer a joint network-source coding scheme based on matrix sparsification at the code design phase, which allows the terminals to use an efficient decoding procedure (syndrome decoding using LDPC), despite the network coding throughout the network. Via a novel relation between matrix sparsification and rate-distortion theory, we give lower and upper bounds on the best achievable sparsification performance. These bounds allow us to analyze our scheme, and, in particular, show that in the limit where all receivers have comparable side information (in terms of conditional entropy), or, equivalently, have weak side information, a vanishing density can be achieved. As a result, efficient decoding is possible at all terminals simultaneously. Simulation results motivate the use of this scheme at non-limiting rates as well.
We consider multi-terminal source coding with a single encoder and multiple decoders where either the encoder or the decoders can take cost constrained actions which affect the quality of the side information present at the decoders. For the scenario where decoders take actions, we characterize the rate-cost trade-off region for lossless source coding, and give an achievability scheme for lossy source coding for two decoders which is optimum for a variety of special cases of interest. For the case where the encoder takes actions, we characterize the rate-cost trade-off for a class of lossless …
The three-node multiterminal lossy source coding problem is investigated. We derive an inner bound to the general rate-distortion region of this problem which is a natural extension of the seminal work by Kaspi'85 on the interactive two-terminal source coding problem. It is shown that this (rather involved) inner bound contains several rate-distortion regions of some relevant source coding settings. In this way, besides the non-trivial extension of the interactive two terminal problem, our results can be seen as a generalization and hence unification of several previous works in the field. Spe…
It is shown that polar coding schemes achieve the known achievable rate regions for several multi-terminal communications problems including lossy distributed source coding, multiple access channels and multiple descriptions coding. The results are valid for arbitrary alphabet sizes (binary or nonbinary) and arbitrary distributions (symmetric or asymmetric).
We study a new class of codes for Gaussian multi-terminal source and channel coding. These codes are designed using the statistical framework of high-dimensional linear regression and are called Sparse Superposition or Sparse Regression codes. Codewords are linear combinations of subsets of columns of a design matrix. These codes were recently introduced by Barron and Joseph and shown to achieve the channel capacity of AWGN channels with computationally feasible decoding. They have also recently been shown to achieve the optimal rate-distortion function for Gaussian sources. In this paper, we …
The optimal causal coding of a partially observed Markov process is studied, where the cost to be minimized is a bounded, non-negative, additive, measurable single-letter function of the source and the receiver output. A structural result is obtained extending Witsenhausen's and Walrand-Varaiya's structural results on optimal real-time coders to a partially observed setting. The decentralized (multi-terminal) setup is also considered. For the case where the source is an i.i.d. process, it is shown that the optimal decentralized causal coding of correlated observations problem admits a solution…
We investigate binary block-codes (BBC). A BBC is defined as a vector of Boolean functions. We consider BBCs which are generated randomly, and using single-letter distributions. We characterize the vector of dependency spectrums of these BBCs. We use this vector to upper-bound the correlation between the outputs of two distributed BBCs. Finally, the upper-bound is used to show that the large blocklength single-letter coding schemes in the literature are sub-optimal in some multiterminal communication settings.
A general multi-terminal source code and a general multi-terminal channel code are presented. Constrained-random-number generators with sparse matrices, which are building blocks for the code construction, are used in the construction of both encoders and decoders. Achievable regions for source coding and channel coding are derived in terms of entropy functions, where the capacity region for channel coding provides an alternative to the region of [Somekh-Baruch and Verdú, ISIT2006].
We consider a communication network with a single source that has a set of messages and two terminals where each terminal is interested in an arbitrary subset of messages at the source. A tight capacity region for this problem is demonstrated. We show by a simple graph-theoretic procedure that any such problem can be solved by performing network coding on the subset of messages that are requested by both the terminals and that routing is sufficient for transferring the remaining messages.
A new ensemble of structured codes is introduced. These codes are called Quasi Linear Codes (QLC). The QLC's are constructed by taking subsets of linear codes. They have a looser structure compared to linear codes and are not closed under addition. We argue that these codes provide gains in terms of achievable Rate-Distortions (RD) in different multi-terminal source coding problems. We derive the necessary covering bounds for analyzing the performance of QLC's. We then consider the Multiple-Descriptions (MD) problem, and prove through an example that the application of QLC's gives an improved …
Network coding in geometric space, a new research direction also known as Space Information Flow, is a promising research field which shows the superiority of network coding in space over routing in space. Present literatures proved that given six terminal nodes, network coding in space is strictly superior to routing in space in terms of single-source multicast in regular (5+1) model, in which five terminal nodes forms a regular pentagon centered at a terminal node. In order to compare the performance between network coding in space and routing in space, this paper quantitatively studies two …
We present the problem of two-terminal source coding with Common Sum Reconstruction (CSR). Consider two terminals, each with access to one of two correlated sources. Both terminals want to reconstruct the sum of the two sources under some average distortion constraint, and the reconstructions at two terminals must be identical with high probability. In this paper, we develop inner and outer bounds to the achievable rate distortion region of the CSR problem for a doubly symmetric binary source. We employ existing achievability results for Steinberg's common reconstruction and Wyner-Ziv's source…
Since the publication of Shannon's theory of one terminal source coding, a number of interesting extensions have been derived by researchers such as Slepian-Wolf, Wyner, Ahlswede-Körner, Wyner-Ziv and Berger-Yeung. Specifically, the achievable rate or rate-distortion region has been described by a first order information-theoretic functional of the source statistics in each of the above cases. At the same time several problems have also remained unsolved. Notable two terminal examples include the joint distortion problem, where both sources are reconstructed under a combined distortion criteri…
A unified graphical approach to random coding for any memoryless, single-hop, K-user channel with or without common information is defined through two steps. The first step is user virtualization: each user is divided into multiple virtual sub-users according to a chosen rate-splitting strategy. This results in an enhanced channel with a possibly larger number of users for which more coding possibilities are available and for which common messages to any subset of users can be encoded. Following user virtualization, the message of each user in the enhanced model is coded using a chosen combina…
In this work we improve on the bounds presented by Li&Li for network coding gain in the undirected case. A tightened bound for the undirected multicast problem with three terminals is derived. An interesting result shows that with fractional routing, routing throughput can achieve at least 75% of the coding throughput. A tighter bound for the general multicast problem with any number of terminals shows that coding gain is strictly less than 2. Our derived bound depends on the number of terminals in the multicast network and approaches 2 for arbitrarily large number of terminals.
We consider a directed acyclic network with three sources and three terminals such that each source independently generates one symbol from a given field $F$ and each terminal wants to receive the sum (over $F$) of the source symbols. Each link in the network is considered to be error-free and delay-free and can carry one symbol from the field in each use. We call such a network a 3-source 3-terminal {\it $(3s/3t)$ sum-network}. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a $3s/3t$ sum-network to allow all the terminals to receive the sum of the source symbols over \textit{…
We consider a network (that is capable of network coding) with a set of sources and terminals, where each terminal is interested in recovering the sum of the sources. Considering directed acyclic graphs with unit capacity edges and independent, unit-entropy sources, we show the rate region when (a) there are two sources and $n$ terminals, and (b) $n$ sources and two terminals. In these cases as long as there exists at least one path from each source to each terminal we demonstrate that there exists a valid assignment of coding vectors to the edges such that the terminals can recover the sum of…
A sum-network is a directed acyclic network where each source independently generates one symbol from a given field $\mathbb F$ and each terminal wants to receive the sum $($over $\mathbb F)$ of the source symbols. For sum-networks with two sources or two terminals, the solvability is characterized by the connection condition of each source-terminal pair [3]. A necessary and sufficient condition for the solvability of the $3$-source $3$-terminal $(3$s$/3$t$)$ sum-networks was given by Shenvi and Dey [6]. However, the general case of arbitrary sources/sinks is still open. In this paper, we inve…
A unified approach to the derivation of rate regions for single-hop memoryless networks is presented. A general transmission scheme for any memoryless, single-hop, k-user channel with or without common information, is defined through two steps. The first step is user virtualization: each user is divided into multiple virtual sub-users according to a chosen rate-splitting strategy which preserves the rates of the original messages. This results in an enhanced channel with a possibly larger number of users for which more coding possibilities are available. Moreover, user virtualization provides …
We propose an adaptive lossy joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme for sending correlated sources over two-terminal discrete-memoryless two-way channels (DM-TWCs). The main idea is to couple the independent operations of the terminals via an adaptive coding mechanism, which can mitigate cross-interference resulting from simultaneous channel transmissions and concurrently exploit the sources' correlation to reduce the end-to-end reconstruction distortions. Our adaptive JSCC scheme not only subsumes existing lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous communication but also improves their …
We consider secure multi-terminal source coding problems in the presence of a public helper. Two main scenarios are studied: 1) source coding with a helper where the coded side information from the helper is eavesdropped by an external eavesdropper; 2) triangular source coding with a helper where the helper is considered as a public terminal. We are interested in how the helper can support the source transmission subject to a constraint on the amount of information leaked due to its public nature. We characterize the tradeoff between transmission rate, incurred distortion, and information leak…
This paper studies variable-length (VL) source coding of general sources with side-information. Novel one-shot coding theorems for coding with common side-information available at the encoder and the decoder and Slepian- Wolf (SW) coding (i.e., with side-information only at the decoder) are given, and then, are applied to asymptotic analyses of these coding problems. Especially, a general formula for the infimum of the coding rate asymptotically achievable by weak VL-SW coding (i.e., VL-SW coding with vanishing error probability) is derived. Further, the general formula is applied to investiga…
We study the network coding problem of sum-networks with 3 sources and n terminals (3s/nt sum-network), for an arbitrary positive integer n, and derive a sufficient and necessary condition for the solvability of a family of so-called terminal-separable sum-network. Both the condition of terminal-separable and the solvability of a terminal-separable sum-network can be decided in polynomial time. Consequently, we give another necessary and sufficient condition, which yields a faster (O(|E|) time) algorithm than that of Shenvi and Dey ([18], (O(|E|^3) time), to determine the solvability of the 3s…
We consider source coding with fixed lag side information at the decoder. We focus on the special case of perfect side information with unit lag corresponding to source coding with feedforward (the dual of channel coding with feedback) introduced by Pradhan. We use this duality to develop a linear complexity algorithm which achieves the rate-distortion bound for any memoryless finite alphabet source and distortion measure.
We consider the problem of rate and power allocation for a sensor network under the pairwise distributed source coding constraint. For noiseless source-terminal channels, we show that the minimum sum rate assignment can be found by finding a minimum weight arborescence in an appropriately defined directed graph. For orthogonal noisy source-terminal channels, the minimum sum power allocation can be found by finding a minimum weight matching forest in a mixed graph. Numerical results are presented for both cases showing that our solutions always outperform previously proposed solutions. The gain…
This letter investigates the role of index coding in the capacity of AWGN broadcast channels with receiver message side information. We first show that index coding is unnecessary where there are two receivers; multiplexing coding and superposition coding are sufficient to achieve the capacity region. We next show that, for more than two receivers, multiplexing coding and superposition coding alone can be suboptimal. We give an example where these two coding schemes alone cannot achieve the capacity region, but adding index coding can. This demonstrates that, in contrast to the two-receiver ca…
In this paper, new index coding problems are studied, where each receiver has erroneous side information. Although side information is a crucial part of index coding, the existence of erroneous side information has not yet been considered. We study an index code with receivers that have erroneous side information symbols in the error-free broadcast channel, which is called an index code with side information errors (ICSIE). The encoding and decoding procedures of the ICSIE are proposed, based on the syndrome decoding. Then, we derive the bounds on the optimal codelength of the proposed index c…
A two-terminal interactive function computation problem with alternating messages is studied within the framework of distributed block source coding theory. For any finite number of messages, a single-letter characterization of the sum-rate-distortion function was established in previous works using standard information-theoretic techniques. This, however, does not provide a satisfactory characterization of the infinite-message limit, which is a new, unexplored dimension for asymptotic-analysis in distributed block source coding involving potentially an infinite number of infinitesimal-rate me…
Let (S1,i, S2,i), distributed according to i.i.d p(s1, s2), i = 1, 2, . . . be a memoryless, correlated partial side information sequence. In this work we study channel coding and source coding problems where the partial side information (S1, S2) is available at the encoder and the decoder, respectively, and, additionally, either the encoder's or the decoder's side information is increased by a limited-rate description of the other's partial side information. We derive six special cases of channel coding and source coding problems and we characterize the capacity and the rate-distortion functi…
For a multi-source multi-terminal noiseless network, the key-dissemination problem involves the task of multicasting a secret key K from the network sources to its terminals. As in secure multicast network-coding, in the key-dissemination problem the source nodes have access to independent randomness and, as the network is noiseless, the resulting key K is a function of the sources' information. However, different from traditional forms of multicast, in key-dissemination the key K need not consist of source messages, but rather may be any function of the information generated at the sources, a…
This paper considers the problem of source coding with side information at the decoder, also called Slepian-Wolf source coding scheme. In practical applications of this coding scheme, the statistical relation between the source and the side information can vary from one data transmission to another, and there is a need to adapt the coding rate depending on the current statistical relation. In this paper, we propose a novel rate-adaptive code construction based on LDPC codes for the Slepian-Wolf source coding scheme. The proposed code design method allows to optimize the code degree distributio…
This paper simplifies an existing coding scheme for the two-receiver discrete memoryless broadcast channel with complementary receiver side information where there is a passive eavesdropper and individual secrecy is required. The existing coding scheme is simplified in two steps by replacing Wyner secrecy coding with Carleial-Hellman secrecy coding. The resulting simplified scheme is free from redundant message splits and random components. Not least, the simplified scheme retains the existing achievable individual secrecy rate region. Finally, its construction simplicity helps us gain additio…
A multiterminal lossy coding problem, which includes various problems such as the Wyner-Ziv problem and the complementary delivery problem as special cases, is considered. It is shown that any point in the achievable rate-distortion region can be attained even if the source statistics are not known.
We study the problem of receive beamforming in uplink cascade multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems as an instance of that of cascade multiterminal source coding for lossy function computation. Using this connection, we develop two coding schemes for the second and show that their application leads to beamforming schemes for the first. In the first coding scheme, each terminal in the cascade sends a description of the source that it observes; the decoder reconstructs all sources, lossily, and then computes an estimate of the desired function. This scheme improves upon standard routing …
A lossy source coding problem is studied in which a source encoder communicates with two decoders, one with and one without correlated side information with an additional constraint on the privacy of the side information at the uninformed decoder. Two cases of this problem arise depending on the availability of the side information at the encoder. The set of all feasible rate-distortion-equivocation tuples are characterized for both cases. The difference between the informed and uninformed cases and the advantages of encoder side information for enhancing privacy are highlighted for a binary s…
In this paper, we study the upper and the lower bounds on the joint source-channel coding error exponent with decoder side-information. The results in the paper are non-trivial extensions of the Csiszar's classical paper [5]. Unlike the joint source-channel coding result in [5], it is not obvious whether the lower bound and the upper bound are equivalent even if the channel coding error exponent is known. For a class of channels, including the symmetric channels, we apply a game-theoretic result to establish the existence of a saddle point and hence prove that the lower and upper bounds are th…
One-shot achievable rate region for source coding when coded side information is available at the decoder (source coding with a helper) is proposed. The achievable region proposed is in terms of conditional smooth max Renyi entropy and smooth max Renyi divergence. Asymptotically (in the limit of large block lengths) this region is quantified in terms of spectral-sup conditional entropy rate and spectral- sup mutual information rate. In particular, it coincides with the rate region derived in the limit of unlimited independent and identically distributed copies of the sources.
The model of a side information "vending machine" accounts for scenarios in which acquiring side information is costly and thus should be done efficiently. In this paper, the three-node cascade source coding problem is studied under the assumption that a side information vending machine is available either at the intermediate or at the end node. In both cases, a single-letter characterization of the available trade-offs among the rate, the distortions in the reconstructions at the intermediate and at the end node, and the cost in acquiring the side information are derived under given condition…
We study source coding in the presence of side information, when the system can take actions that affect the availability, quality, or nature of the side information. We begin by extending the Wyner-Ziv problem of source coding with decoder side information to the case where the decoder is allowed to choose actions affecting the side information. We then consider the setting where actions are taken by the encoder, based on its observation of the source. Actions may have costs that are commensurate with the quality of the side information they yield, and an overall per-symbol cost constraint ma…
The problem of secure lossy source-channel wiretapping with arbitrarily correlated side informations at both receivers is investigated. This scenario consists of an encoder (referred to as Alice) that wishes to compress a source and send it through a noisy channel to a legitimate receiver (referred to as Bob). In this context, Alice must simultaneously satisfy the desired requirements on the distortion level at Bob, and the equivocation rate at the eavesdropper (referred to as Eve). This setting can be seen as a generalization of the conventional problems of secure source coding with side info…
In two-way OFDM relay, carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) between relay and terminal nodes introduce severe intercarrier interference (ICI) which degrades the performance of traditional physical-layer network coding (PLNC). Moreover, traditional algorithm to compute the posteriori probability in the presence of ICI would incur prohibitive computational complexity at the relay node. In this paper, we proposed a two-step asynchronous PLNC scheme at the relay to mitigate the effect of CFOs. In the first step, we intend to reconstruct the ICI component, in which space-alternating generalized expecta…
We study error exponents for source coding with side information. Both achievable exponents and converse bounds are obtained for the following two cases: lossless source coding with coded information (SCCSI) and lossy source coding with full side information (Wyner-Ziv). These results recover and extend several existing results on source-coding error exponents and are tight in some circumstances. Our bounds have a natural interpretation as a two-player game between nature and the code designer, with nature seeking to minimize the exponent and the code designer seeking to maximize it. In the Wy…
The problem of lossless fixed-rate streaming coding of discrete memoryless sources with side information at the decoder is studied. A random time-varying tree-code is used to sequentially bin strings and a Stack Algorithm with a variable bias uses the side information to give a delay-universal coding system for lossless source coding with side information. The scheme is shown to give exponentially decaying probability of error with delay, with exponent equal to Gallager's random coding exponent for sources with side information. The mean of the random variable of computation for the stack deco…
We consider the cascade and triangular rate-distortion problem where side information is known to the source encoder and to the first user but not to the second user. We characterize the rate-distortion region for these problems. For the quadratic Gaussian case, we show that it is sufficient to consider jointly Gaussian distributions, a fact that leads to an explicit solution.
The output of a discrete Markov source is to be encoded instantaneously by a variable-rate encoder and decoded by a finite-state decoder. Our performance measure is a linear combination of the distortion and the instantaneous rate. Structure theorems, pertaining to the encoder and next-state functions are derived for every given finite-state decoder, which can have access to side information.
The recently proposed set-up of source coding with a side information "vending machine" allows the decoder to select actions in order to control the quality of the side information. The actions can depend on the message received from the encoder and on the previously measured samples of the side information, and are cost constrained. Moreover, the final estimate of the source by the decoder is a function of the encoder's message and depends causally on the side information sequence. Previous work by Permuter and Weissman has characterized the rate-distortion-cost function in the special case i…
The problem of side-information scalable (SI-scalable) source coding is considered in this work, where the encoder constructs a progressive description, such that the receiver with high quality side information will be able to truncate the bitstream and reconstruct in the rate distortion sense, while the receiver with low quality side information will have to receive further data in order to decode. We provide inner and outer bounds for general discrete memoryless sources. The achievable region is shown to be tight for the case that either of the decoders requires a lossless reconstruction, as…
This letter investigates a new class of index coding problems. One sender broadcasts packets to multiple users, each desiring a subset, by exploiting prior knowledge of linear combinations of packets. We refer to this class of problems as index coding with coded side-information. Our aim is to characterize the minimum index code length that the sender needs to transmit to simultaneously satisfy all user requests. We show that the optimal binary vector index code length is equal to the minimum rank (minrank) of a matrix whose elements consist of the sets of desired packet indices and side- info…
This paper characterizes the second-order coding rates for lossy source coding with side information available at both the encoder and the decoder. We first provide non-asymptotic bounds for this problem and then specialize the non-asymptotic bounds for three different scenarios: discrete memoryless sources, Gaussian sources, and Markov sources. We obtain the second-order coding rates for these settings. It is interesting to observe that the second-order coding rate for Gaussian source coding with Gaussian side information available at both the encoder and the decoder is the same as that for G…
This paper discusses noisy index coding problem over Gaussian broadcast channel. We propose a technique for mapping the index coded bits to M-QAM symbols such that the receivers whose side information satisfies certain conditions get coding gain, which we call the QAM side information coding gain. We compare this with the PSK side information coding gain, which was discussed in "Index Coded PSK Modulation," arXiv:1356200, [cs.IT] 19 September 2015.
The problem of source coding with side information (SCSI) is closely related to channel coding. Therefore, existing literature focuses on using the most successful channel codes namely, LDPC codes, turbo codes, and their variants, to solve this problem assuming classical unique decoding of the underlying channel code. In this paper, in contrast to classical decoding, we have taken the list decoding approach. We show that syndrome source coding using list decoding can achieve the theoretical limit. We argue that, as opposed to channel coding, the correct sequence from the list produced by the l…
We consider the problem of lossy source coding with side information under a privacy constraint that the reconstruction sequence at a decoder should be kept secret to a certain extent from another terminal such as an eavesdropper, a sender, or a helper. We are interested in how the reconstruction privacy constraint at a particular terminal affects the rate-distortion tradeoff. In this work, we allow the decoder to use a random mapping, and give inner and outer bounds to the rate-distortion-equivocation region for different cases where the side information is available non-causally and causally…
We consider lossy source coding when side information affecting the distortion measure may be available at the encoder, decoder, both, or neither. For example, such distortion side information can model reliabilities for noisy measurements, sensor calibration information, or perceptual effects like masking and sensitivity to context. When the distortion side information is statistically independent of the source, we show that in many cases (e.g, for additive or multiplicative distortion side information) there is no penalty for knowing the side information only at the encoder, and there is no …
Constrained lossy source coding and channel coding with side information problems which extend the classic Wyner-Ziv and Gel'fand-Pinsker problems are considered. Inspired by applications in sensor networking and control, we first consider lossy source coding with two-sided partial side information where the quality/availability of the side information can be influenced by a cost-constrained action sequence. A decoder reconstructs a source sequence subject to the distortion constraint, and at the same time, an encoder is additionally required to be able to estimate the decoder's reconstruction…

The problem of characterizing the capacity region for Gaussian broadcast channels with receiver message side information appears difficult and remains open for N >= 3 receivers. This paper proposes a joint network and Gelfand-Pinsker coding method for 3-receiver cases. Using the method, we establish a unified inner bound on the capacity region of 3-receiver Gaussian broadcast channels under general message side information configuration. The achievability proof of the inner bound uses an idea of joint interference cancelation, where interference is canceled by using both dirty-paper coding at …
