Light-induced polarization effects in atoms with partially resolved hyperfine structure and applications to absorption, fluorescence, and nonlinear magneto-optical rotation
The creation and detection of atomic polarization is examined theoretically, through the study of basic optical-pumping mechanisms and absorption and fluorescence measurements, and the dependence of these processes on the size of ground- and excited-state hyperfine splittings is determined. The consequences of this dependence are studied in more detail for the case of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in the Faraday geometry (an effect requiring the creation and detection of rank-two polarization in the ground state) with alkali atoms. Analytic formulas for the optical rotation signal under various experimental conditions are presented.
Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure of tungsten were studied in the near UV range. We have used laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy on a pulsed supersonic beam to probe the 5D0 -> 5F1 transition at 384.9 nm, 7S3 -> 7P4 transition at 400.9 nm, and 7S3 -> 7P3 transition at 407.4 nm. Three new magnetic hyperfine constants are reported for 7P3,7P4, and 5F1 states. The isotope shifts of the 384.9 nm transition are presented for the first time, and the isotope shifts of 400.9 nm and 407.4 nm transition are measured with an order of magnitude higher precision compared to the previous measureme…
We present an experimental scheme that produces Doppler-free spectra of the $5s \to 6p $ second resonance transition in atomic rubidium. The experiment uses the saturation of the cascade fluorescence that occurs when thermal rubidium atoms interact with two counterpropagating $420 $ nm laser beams of comparable intensity. Part of the excited atomic population goes through the $5p_{3/2}$ level which then decays by emission of $780$ nm photons. Narrow dips appear in this otherwise broad $780$ nm fluorescence, which allows resolution of the $6p_{3/2}$ hyperfine structure. A rate equation model is…
We report on magneto-optical resonances observed in sodium fluorescence from D2 manifold with an intensity modulated light. Fluorescence resonances are measured in the perpendicular and backward directions to the light propagation, in laboratory experiments using a sodium cell containing neon buffer gas. Properties of these resonances are studied by varying the magnetic field at fixed light modulation frequency, and vice-versa. Modulation with low-duty cycle shows higher-harmonic resonances of the modulation frequency and sub-harmonic resonances of the Larmor frequency. A dark resonance with m…
We present a study on characteristics of a magneto-optical trap (MOT) as an optical lattice. Fluorescence spectra of atoms trapped in a MOT with a passively phase-stabilized beam configuration have been measured by means of the photon-counting heterodyne spectroscopy. We observe a narrow Rayleigh peak and well-resolved Raman sidebands in the fluorescence spectra which clearly show that the MOT itself behaves as a three-dimensional optical lattice. Optical-lattice-like properties of the phase-stabilized MOT such as vibrational frequencies and lineshapes of Rayleigh peak and Raman sidebands are …
We report high-precision measurements on the thallium fluoride $\tilde{J} = 1$ hyperfine manifold of the $B^3Π_1$ ($ν= 0$) state. This state is of special interest because it is central to an optical cycling scheme that is envisioned to play an important role in enhancing the sensitivity of the CeNTREX nuclear Schiff-moment experiment presently under construction. The measurements are made by monitoring the fluorescence induced by narrow-band laser excitation of a cryogenic molecular beam. We use a multipass arrangement of the laser beam to enhance fluorescence. When viewed with a camera, we c…
We report a new technique for generating magnetic resonance with synchronous modulation of two-photon resonant light fields. Magnetic resonances in fluorescence from a sodium cell are measured to demonstrate suitability of this technique for remote magnetometry. A strong magnetic resonance with its dip corresponding to the Larmor frequency is produced in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. An additional resonance at 3\{Omega_L} is observed, which can be used to determine the magnetic field orientation. We have developed a theoretical model based on the density matrix equations to veri…
The rotational and hyperfine spectrum of the $X^1Σ^+ \rightarrow B^3Π_1$ transition in TlF molecules was measured using laser-induced fluorescence from both a thermal and a cryogenic molecular beam. Rotational and hyperfine constants for the $B$ state are obtained. The large magnetic hyperfine interaction of the Tl nuclear spin leads to significant mixing of the lowest $B$ state rotational levels. Updated, more precise measurements of the $B\rightarrow X$ vibrational branching fractions are also presented. The combined rovibrational branching fractions allow for the prediction of the number of…
We describe a method to observe the dynamics of an excited-state transition in a room temperature atomic vapor using hyperfine quantum beats. Our experiment using cesium atoms consists of a pulsed excitation of the D2 transition, and continuous-wave driving of an excited-state transition from the 6P$_{3/2}$ state to the 7S$_{1/2}$ state. We observe quantum beats in the fluorescence from the 6P$_{3/2}$ state which are modified by the driving of the excited-state transition. The Fourier spectrum of the beat signal yields evidence of Autler-Townes splitting of the 6P$_{3/2}$, F = 5 hyperfine leve…
The hyperfine structure and isotope shifts of the 3s23p2 3P2 to 3s3p3 3Do3 transition in silicon have been measured. The transition at 221.7 nm was studied by laser induced fluorescence in an atomic Si beam. For 29Si, the hyperfine A constant for the 3s23p2 3P2 level was determined to be -160.1+-1.3 MHz (1 sigma error), and the A constant for the 3s3p3 3Do3 level is -532.9+-0.6 MHz. This is the first time that these constants were measured. The isotope shifts (relative to the abundant isotope 28Si) of the transition were determined to be 1753.3+-1.1 MHz for 29Si and 3359.9+-0.6 MHz for 30Si. T…
We report on the measurement of the isotope shifts of the $3d^74s \,\, a \, {}^5\!F_5 - 3d^74p \,\, z \, {}^5\!G^o_6$ Fe~I line at 358~nm between all four stable isotopes ${}^{54}$Fe, ${}^{56}$Fe, ${}^{57}$Fe and ${}^{58}$Fe, as well as the hyperfine structure of that line for ${}^{57}$Fe, the only stable isotope having a nonzero nuclear spin. This line is of primary importance for laser cooling applications. In addition, an experimental value of the field and specific mass shift coefficients of the transition is reported as well as the hyperfine structure magnetic dipole coupling constant $A$…
Optical frequency measurements of the intercombination line $(6s^{2})\,^{1}S_{0} -(6s6p)\,^{3}P_{1}$ in the isotopes of ytterbium are carried out with the use of sub-Doppler fluorescence spectroscopy on an atomic beam. A dispersive signal is generated to which a master laser is locked, while frequency counting of an auxiliary beat signal is performed via a frequency comb referenced to a hydrogen maser. The relative separations between the lines are used to evaluate the $^{3}P_{1}$-level magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole constants for the fermionic isotopes. The center of gravity for the …
We report here measurements on a dark magneto-optical trap (DMOT) of $^{85}$Rb atoms using an optical nanofibre (ONF) with a waist of $\sim$~1 $μ$m. The DMOT is created using a doughnut-shaped repump beam along with a depump beam for efficient transfer of cold atoms from the bright hyperfine ground state ($F=3$) into the dark hyperfine ground state ($F=2$). The fluorescence from the cold $^{85}$Rb atoms of the DMOT is detected by coupling it into the fibre-guided modes of the ONF. The measured fractional population of cold atoms in the bright hyperfine ground state ($p$) is as low as $\sim$0.0…
We study optical gain in a gas of cold 39K atoms. The gain is observed during operation of a conventional magneto-optical trap without the need for additional fields. Measurements of transmission spectra from a weak probe show that the gain is due to stimulated Raman scattering between hyperfine ground states. The experimental results are reproduced by a simplified six-level model, which also helps explain why such gain is not observed in similar experiments with rubidium or cesium.
We report the first experimental determination of the hyperfine quenching rate of the $6s^2\ ^1\!S_0\ (F=1/2) - 6s6p\ ^3\!P_0\ (F=1/2)$ transition in $^{171}$Yb with nuclear spin $I=1/2$. This rate determines the natural linewidth and the Rabi frequency of the clock transition of a Yb optical frequency standard. Our technique involves spectrally resolved fluorescence decay measurements of the lowest lying $^3\!P_{0,1}$ levels of neutral Yb atoms embedded in a solid Ne matrix. The solid Ne provides a simple way to trap a large number of atoms as well as an efficient mechanism for populating $^3…
Collisions with chemically inert atoms or molecules change the hyperfine coupling of an alkali-metal atom through the hyperfine-shift interaction. This interaction is responsible for the pressure shifts of the microwave resonances of alkali-metal atoms in buffer gases, is an important spin interaction in alkali-metal--noble-gas van der Waals molecules, and is anticipated to enable the magnetoassociation of ultracold molecules such as RbSr. An improved estimate is presented for the long-range asymptote of this interaction for Na, K, Rb, and Cs. To test the results, the change in hyperfine coupl…
We describe an atom trapping mechanism based upon differential optical pumping between metastable hyperfine states by partially-displaced laser beams in the absence of a magnetic field. With realistic laser powers, trap spring constants should match or exceed those typical of magneto-optical traps, and highly flexible tailored trap shapes should be achievable. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we have combined a 1D implementation with magneto-optical trapping in the orthogonal directions, capturing ~10000 85Rb atoms. This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article published in…
We experimentally investigate trap-loss spectra of the cesium 6S1/2(F=4)-71P3/2 Rydberg state by combining the cesium atomic magneto-optical trap with the narrow-linewidth, continuously-tunable 318.6 nm ultraviolet laser. That is, the atoms in the magneto-optical trap are excited to the Rydberg state due to the ultraviolet laser single-step Rydberg excitation, which leads to the reduction of atomic fluorescence. Based on the trap-loss spectroscopy technology, the Autler-Townes splitting due to strong cooling laser is observed, and the parameter dependence of the AT splitting interval of trap-l…
We present experimental investigation on the fluorescence profiles observed by excitation of the hyperfine transitions of the second resonance line of potassium with a wavelength of 404.4 nm in dependence on the atomic density. This leads to both direct decay of the excited level population to the ground state (violet fluorescence), and to cascade decay via the first resonance lines (infrared fluorescence). It has been shown that the behavior of these two fluorescence profiles is different: increasing the atomic density, the violet fluorescence profile exhibits a well-pronounced self-absorptio…
We present a theoretical study of magneto-optical trapping (MOT) force exerted on magnesium monofluoride (MgF) with 3D rate equations, in which we have considered the complex vibrational and rotational levels and the effects of small internal splittings and degeneracies, including fine and hyperfine structures and the magnetic quantum numbers. We investigate the feasibility of MOT for MgF with a very small excited state g-factor ($g_{e} = -0.0002$) and a large radiative decay reate ($Γ = 2π\times22$MHz) for the electronic transition of X$^2Σ^{+}$ to A$^2Π_{1/2}$ states. We also optimize the MOT…
We perform balanced homodyne detection of the electromagnetic field in a single-mode tapered optical nanofiber surrounded by rubidium atoms in a magneto-optical trap. Resonant fluorescence of atoms into the nanofiber mode manifests itself as increased quantum noise of the field quadratures. The autocorrelation function of the homodyne detector's output photocurrent exhibits exponential fall-off with a decay time constant of $26.3\pm 0.6$ ns, which is consistent with the theoretical expectation under our experimental conditions. To our knowledge, this is the first experiment in which fluorescen…
We demonstrate the first application of a liquid-metal ion source for collinear laser spectroscopy in proof-of-principle measurements on naturally abundant In$^+$. The superior beam quality, i.e., the actively stabilized current and energy of a beam with very low transverse emittance, allowed us to perform precision spectroscopy on the $5s^2\;^1\mathrm{S}_0 \rightarrow 5s5p\;^3\mathrm{P}_1$ intercombination transition in $^{115}$In$^+$, which is to our knowledge the slowest transition measured with collinear fluorescence laser spectroscopy so far. By applying collinear and anticollinear spectr…
Hyperfine-structures of highly charged ions (HCIs) are favourable spectroscopic targets for exploring fundamental physics as well as nuclear properties. Recent proposals of HCI atomic clocks highlight their importance, especially for many-electron HCIs, and they have been theoretically investigated by refining atomic-structure calculations. Nonetheless, no established spectroscopic method is currently available to verify these theoretical calculations. Here, we demonstrate hyperfine-structure-resolved laser spectroscopy of HCIs in an electron beam ion trap plasma, employing the magnetic-dipole…
We have magneto-optically trapped all three stable neon isotopes, including the rare Ne-21, and all two-isotope combinations. The atoms are prepared in the metastable ^3P_2 state and manipulated via laser interaction on the ^3P_2 to ^3D_3} transition at 640.2nm. These cold (T = 1mK) and environmentally decoupled atom samples present ideal objects for precision measurements and the investigation of interactions between cold and ultracold metastable atoms. In this work, we present accurate measurements of the isotope shift of the ^3P_2 to ^3D_3 transition and the hyperfine interaction constants …
Alkali-metal atomic magnetometers suffer from heading errors in geomagnetic fields as the measured magnetic field depends on the orientation of the sensor with respect to the field. In addition to the nonlinear Zeeman splitting, the difference between Zeeman resonances in the two hyperfine ground states can also generate heading errors depending on initial spin polarization. We examine heading errors in an all-optical scalar magnetometer that uses free precession of polarized $^{87}\text{Rb}$ atoms by varying the direction and magnitude of the magnetic field at different spin polarization regi…
The Zeeman hyperfine state dependent force in a Stern-Gerlach (SG) experiment has been exploited to separate and detect atoms having different Zeeman hyperfine states in a cold atom cloud. Utilizing this SG technique, we have made the quantitative estimate of atoms in different Zeeman hyperfine states in an atom cloud, which has been helpful in optimizing the optical pumping of atoms for efficient preparation of atomic state. Employing an optimized optical pumping, nearly $92 \% $ of cold $^{87}Rb$ atoms from a grey magneto-optical trap (G-MOT) on atom-chip have been optically pumped to the tr…
We demonstrate the parallel and non-destructive readout of the hyperfine state for optically trapped $^{87}$Rb atoms. The scheme is based on state-selective fluorescence imaging and achieves detection fidelities $>$98% within 10$\,$ms, while keeping 99% of the atoms trapped. For the read-out of dense arrays of neutral atoms in optical lattices, where the fluorescence images of neighboring atoms overlap, we apply a novel image analysis technique using Bayesian inference to determine the internal state of multiple atoms. Our method is scalable to large neutral atom registers relevant for future …
We present and experimental and theoretical study of nonlinear magneto-optical resonances observed in the fluorescence to the ground state from the 7P_{3/2} state of cesium, which was populated directly by laser radiation at 455 nm, and from the 6P_{1/2} and 6P_{3/2} states, which were populated via cascade transitions that started from the 7P_{3/2} state and passed through various intermediate states. The laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) was observed as the magnetic field was scanned through zero. Signals were recorded for the two orthogonal, linearly polarized components of the LIF. We compa…
We demonstrate the use of spatial emission patterns to measure the magnetic fields used in a magneto-optical trap. The directional aspect of the Hanle effect gives a direct, visual presentation of the magnetic fields, in which brighter fluorescence indicates larger fields. It can be used to determine the direction as well as the magnitude of the field. It is particularly well suited for characterizing and aligning magneto-optical traps, requiring little additional equipment or setup beyond what is ordinarily used in a magneto-optical trap, and being most sensitive to fields of the size typical…
We study the formation and destabilization of dark states in a single trapped 88Sr+ ion caused by the cooling and repumping laser fields required for Doppler cooling and fluorescence detection of the ion. By numerically solving the time-dependent density matrix equations for the eight-level system consisting of the sublevels of the 5s 2S1/2, 5p 2P1/2, and 4d 2D3/2 states, we analyze the different types of dark states and how to prevent them in order to maximize the scattering rate, which is crucial for both the cooling and the detection of the ion. The influence of the laser linewidths and ion…
We present the results of an investigation of the different physical processes that influence the shape of the nonlinear magneto-optical signals both at small magnetic field values (~ 100 mG) and at large magnetic field values (several tens of Gauss). We used a theoretical model that provided an accurate description of experimental signals for a wide range of experimental parameters. By turning various effects "on" or "off" inside this model, we investigated the origin of different features of the measured signals. We confirmed that the narrowest structures, with widths on the order of 100 mG,…
The simple structure of the BH molecule makes it an excellent candidate for direct laser cooling. We measure the branching ratios for the decay of the ${\rm A}^{1}Π(v'=0)$ state to vibrational levels of the ground state, ${\rm X}^{1}Σ^{+}$, and find that they are exceedingly favourable for laser cooling. We verify that the branching ratio for the spin-forbidden transition to the intermediate ${\rm a}^{3}Π$ state is inconsequentially small. We measure the frequency of the lowest rotational transition of the X state, and the hyperfine structure in the relevant levels of both the X and A states, …

Short pulses from mode-locked lasers can produce background-free atomic fluorescence by allowing temporal separation of the prompt incidental scatter from the subsequent atomic emission. We use this to improve quantum state detection of optical-frequency and electron-shelved trapped ion qubits by more than 2 orders of magnitude. For direct detection of qubits defined on atomic hyperfine structure, however, the large bandwidth of short pulses is greater than the hyperfine splitting, and repeated excitation is not qubit state selective. Here, we show that the state resolution needed for projecti…
We demonstrate low-loss measurement of the hyperfine ground state of Rubidium atoms in a dipole trap array of five sites by state dependent fluorescence detection. The presence of atoms and their internal states are minimally altered by utilizing circularly polarized probe light and a strictly controlled quantization axis. We achieve mean state detection fidelity of \(97\%\) without correcting for imperfect state preparation or background losses, and \(98.7\%\) when corrected. After state detection and correction for background losses, the probability of atom loss due to the state measurement …
We demonstrate subpicosecond-time-scale population transfer between the pair of hyperfine ground states of atomic rubidium using a single laser-pulse. Our scheme utilizes the geometric and dynamic phases induced during Rabi oscillation through the fine-structure excited state in order to construct an $X$ rotation gate for the hyperfine-state qubit system. Experiment performed with a femtosecond laser and cold rubidium atoms, in a magneto-optical trap, shows over 98\% maximal population transfer between the clock states.
Spin polarized atomic ensembles can be used for the precise measurement of magnetic field. Conventional atomic magnetometers have demonstrated high sensitivities, albeit at low detection bandwidth, fundamentally limited by the Larmor precession frequency of the atoms. Here, we introduce a new type of atomic magnetometer which can realize sensitive detection with high temporal resolution. The magnetometer is based on monitoring the effect of the magnetic field on the hyperfine coherences of spin-polarized hydrogen atoms produced from the rapid photodissociation of hydrogen chloride (HCl). This …
$^{39}$K atoms have the smallest ground state ($^2S_{1/2}$) hyperfine splitting of all the most naturally abundent alkali isotopes and, consequently, the smallest characteristic magnetic field value $B_0 = A_{^2S_{1/2}}/μ_B \approx 170$ G, where $A_{^2S_{1/2}}$ is the ground state's magnetic dipole interaction constant. In the hyperfine Paschen-Back regime ($B \gg B_0$, where $B$ is the magnitude of the external magnetic field applied on the atoms), only 8 Zeeman transitions are visible in the absorption spectrum of the $D_1$ line of $^{39}$K, while the probabilities of the remaining 16 Zeeman…
