We study a structure consisting of a ferromagnetic (F) layer coupled to two normal metal (N) leads. The system is driven out of equilibrium by the simultaneous application of external dc and ac voltages across the N/F/N structure. Using the Keldysh diagrammatic approach, and modeling the ferromagnet as a classical spin of size S >> 1, we derive the Langevin equation for the magnetization dynamics and calculate the noise correlator. We find that the noise has an explicit frequency dependence in addition to depending on the characteristics of the ac and dc drive. Further, we calculate the current-voltage characteristics of the structure to O(1/S^2) and find that the nonequilibrium dynamics of the ferromagnetic layer gives rise to corrections to the current that are both linear and nonlinear in voltage.
We study the coupled current and magnetization noise in magnetic nanostructures by magnetoelectronic circuit theory. Spin current fluctuations, which depend on the magnetic configuration, are found to be an important source of magnetization noise and damping in thinly layered systems. The enhanced magnetization fluctuations in spin valves can be directly measured by their effect on the resistance noise.
We develop a quantum noise approach to study quantum transport through nanostructures. The nanostructures, such as quantum dots, are regarded as artificial atoms, subject to quasi-equilibrium fermionic reservoirs of electrons in biased leads. Noise operators characterizing the quantum fluctuation in the reservoirs are related to the damping and fluctuation of the artificial atoms through the quantum Langevin equation. The average current and current noise are derived in terms of the reservoir noise correlations. In the white-noise limit, we show that the current and current noise can be exactl…
By scattering theory we show that spin current noise in normal electric conductors in contact with nanoscale ferromagnets increases the magnetization noise by means of a fluctuating spin-transfer torque. Johnson-Nyquist noise in the spin current is related to the increased Gilbert damping due to spin pumping, in accordance with the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Spin current shot noise in the presence of an applied bias is the dominant contribution to the magnetization noise at low temperatures.
We present measurements of low frequency charge noise and conductance drift in modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy in which the silicon doping density has been varied from $2.4\times 10^{18} cm^{-3}$ (critically doped) to $6.0\times 10^{18} cm^{-3}$ (overdoped). Quantum point contacts were used to detect charge fluctuations. A clear reduction of both short time scale telegraphic noise and long time scale conductance drift with decreased doping density was observed. These measurements indicate that the {\it neutral} doping region plays a significant rol…
We have developed a quantum noise approach to study the phonon transport through nanostructures. The nanostructures acting as phonon channels are attached to two phonon reservoirs. And the temperature drop between the two reservoirs drives the phonon transport through the channels. We have derived a quantum Langevin equation(QLE) to describe the phonon transport with the quantum noise originated from the thermal fluctuation of the reservoirs. Within the Markov approximation, the QLE is used to get the thermal conductivity $κ$ of the nanostructures and the finite size effect of the $κ$ then is …
We present a theory of finite-frequency noise in non-equilibrium conductors. It is shown that Non-Markovian correlations are essential to describe the physics of quantum noise. In particular, we show the importance of a correct treatment of the initial system-bath correlations, and how these can be calculated using the formalism of quantum master equations. Our method is particularly important in interacting systems, and when the measured frequencies are larger that the temperature and applied voltage. In this regime, quantum-noise steps are expected in the power spectrum due to vacuum fluctua…

We present measurements of current noise and cross-correlations in three-terminal Superconductor-Normal metal-Superconductor (S-N-S) nanostructures that are potential solid-state entanglers thanks to Andreev reflections at the N-S interfaces. The noise correlation measurements spanned from the regime where electron-electron interactions are relevant to the regime of Incoherent Multiple Andreev Reflection (IMAR). In the latter regime, negative cross-correlations are observed in samples with closely-spaced junctions.
We theoretically model the formation of quantum dots(QDs) and quantum dot molecules(QDMs) in silicon germanium heteroepitaxy by explicitly incorporating the role of noise in a continuum theory for surface evolution in molecular beam epitaxy. Using the connection between flux and noise, we explain how changing flux can lead to a transition from QD to QDM formation, as seen in experiments. In these systems we show a dual role of noise in nanostructure growth; one where it promotes formation of QDMs via pit nucleation, and another where it curtails QDM formation due to stochastic effects.
We review recent studies of the shot noise of spin-polarized charge currents and pure spin currents in multiterminal semiconductor nanostructures, while focusing on the effects brought by the intrinsic Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling and/or extrinsic SO scattering off impurities in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) based devices. By generalizing the scattering theory of quantum shot noise to include the full spin-density matrix of electrons injected from a spin-filtering electrode, we show how decoherence and dephasing in the course of spin precession can lead to substantial enhancement of t…
We have performed theoretical and experimental studies of field emission from nanostructured semiconductor cathodes. Resonant tunneling through electric-field-induced interface bound states is found to strongly affect the field-emission characteristics. Our analytical theory predicts power-law and Lorentzian-shaped current-voltage curves for resonant-tunneling field emission from three-dimensional substrates and two-dimensional accumulation layers, respectively. These predicted line shapes are observed in field emission characteristics from self-assembled silicon nanostructures. A simple model…
We derive an $n$-resolved Master equation for quantum transport that includes a dependence on the number $n$ of tunneled electrons in system parameters such as tunnel rates and energy levels. We apply the formalism to describe dynamical changes due to random backaction effects, for example due to local fluctuations of the electrostatic landscape during the transport process. We quantify the amount of additional noise on top of electron shot noise due to these fluctuations by giving explicit expressions both for sequential and coherent tunneling examples.
The magnetic configurations of barcode-type magnetic nanostructures consisting of alternate ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic layers arranged within a multilayer nanotube structure are investigated as a function of their geometry. Based on a continuum approach we have obtained analytical expressions for the energy which lead us to obtain phase diagrams giving the relative stability of characteristic internal magnetic configurations of the barcode-type nanostructures.
This work presents an accurate numerical study of the electrostatics of systems formed by individual nanostructure mounted on support substrate tip, a theoretical prototype for applications in field electron emission or for construction of tips in probe microscopy requiring high resolution. We modeled substrate tip with height $h_1$, radius $r_{1}$ and characteristic field enhancement factor (FEF) $γ_1$, and the top nanostructure with height $h_2$, radius $r_{2}<r_{1}$ and FEF $γ_2$, both hemisphere on post-like structures. Then, nanostructure mounted on support substrate tip has characteristi…
Three types of metallic nanostructures comprising niobium were investigated experimentally; in all three types, electric transport at very low temperatures was governed by Coulomb blockade effects. 1. Thin film strips of niobium could be tuned into resistor strips by an electrochemical anodisation process, using microfabricated masks and in situ resistance monitoring. These resistors showed a transition from superconducting to insulating behaviour with increasing sheet resistance, occurring at a value approximately equal to the quantum resistance for Cooper pairs, h/(4e^2). 2. Combining the an…
We study low-frequency noise in current passing through quantum point contacts fabricated from several GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures with different layer structures and fabrication processes. In contrast to previous reports, there is no gate-dependent random telegraph noise (RTN) originating from tunneling through a Schottky barrier in devices fabricated using the standard low-damage process. Gate-dependent RTN appears only in devices fabricated with a high-damage process that induces charge trap sites. We show that the insertion of AlAs/GaAs superlattices in the AlGaAs barrier helps to suppres…
Transitions to immeasurably small electrical resistance in thin films of Ag/Au nanostructure-based films have generated significant interest because such transitions can occur even at ambient temperature and pressure. While the zero-bias resistance and magnetic transition in these films have been reported recently, the non-equilibrium current-voltage ($I-V$) transport characteristics at the transition remains unexplored. Here we report the $I-V$ characteristics at zero magnetic field of a prototypical Ag/Au nanocluster film close to its resistivity transition at the critical temperature $T_{C}…
We calculate the rate of acoustic phonon generation by a current-carrying, ballistic quantum channel, defined in a two-dimensional electron gas by a split-gate. Both uniform and nonuniform channels are considered. The generation rate of acoustic phonons of a particular frequency and direction of propagation is a steplike function of the applied bias voltage, with threshold voltages that are calculated in the paper. The emitted phonons have a characteristic angular distribution which changes significantly at the thresholds. The voltage dependence of the generation rate is shown to be sensitive …
We present experimental and theoretical investigation of exciton recombination dynamics and the related polarization of emission in highly in-plane asymmetric nanostructures. Considering general asymmetry- and size-driven effects, we illustrate them with a detailed analysis of InAs/AlGaInAs/InP elongated quantum dots. These offer a widely varied confinement characteristics tuned by size and geometry that are tailored during the growth process, which leads to emission in the application-relevant spectral range of 1.25-1.65 μm. By exploring the interplay of the very shallow hole confining potent…
We generalize the scattering theory of quantum shot noise to include the full spin-density matrix of electrons injected from a spin-filtering or ferromagnetic electrode into a quantum-coherent nanostructure governed by various spin-dependent interactions. This formalism yields the spin-resolved shot noise power for different experimental measurement setups--with ferromagnetic source and ferromagnetic or normal drain electrodes--whose evaluation for the diffusive multichannel quantum wires with the Rashba (SO) spin-orbit coupling shows how spin decoherence and dephasing lead to substantial enha…
Percolation phenomena are investigated and discussed in three kinds of nanostructures: first two are nanocrystalline silicon-based systems, Si nanodots embedded in amorphous SiO2 matrix and porous silicon formed by an oxidized nanowire network, and the third consisting of a multi-walled carbon nanotube network embedded in amorphous SiN. The current-voltage characteristics measured on first two systems present voltage percolation thresholds with the same shape - a saturation plateau region of the current, followed by an abrupt increase. The current-voltage and conductance-voltage curves measure…
The atomic dynamics of linear chains embedded in a crystalline matrix or adsorbed on its surface is studied. A linear chain formed by substitutional impurities in a surface layer and at the same time offsetting from this layer was analyzed particularly. This system models the actively studied experimentally structures in which gas molecules are adsorbed on the walls of the bundles of carbon nanotubes located in certain medium. It is shown that the quasi-1D features are typical for the chains in which the interatomic interaction is higher than the interaction between the atoms of the chain and …
We study a simple model of a self-assembled, room temperature Coulomb-blockade nanostructure containing a metallic nanocrystal or grain connected by soft molecular links to two metallic electrodes. Self-excitation of periodic grain vibrations at 10 - 100 GHz is shown to be possible for a sufficiently large bias voltage leading to a novel `shuttle mechanism' of discrete charge transfer and a current through the nanostructure proportional to the vibration frequency. For the case of weak electromechanical coupling an analytical approach is developed which together with Monte Carlo simulations sho…
Niobium thin film nanostructures were fabricated using electron beam lithography and a liftoff process involving a four layer resist system. Wires having micrometres in length and below 200 nm in width were deposited on an insulating substrate and subsequently thinned by anodisation. The resistance of the wires was monitored in situ and could be trimmed by controlling the anodisation voltage and time. The method appears appropriate for the fabrication of very small resistors for use as biasing resistors for single electron devices. Transport properties of these resistors were measured at milli…
Characteristic results of magnetism in small particles and thin films are presented. As a consequence of the reduced atomic coordination in small clusters and thin films the electronic states and density of states modify. Thus magnetic moments and magnetization are affected. In tunnel junctions interplay of magnetism, spin currents and superconductivity are of particular interest. Results are given for single transition metal clusters, cluster ensembles, thin films and tunnel systems. Interesting behavior of tunnel currents and currents induced by Aharonov-Bohm effect into mesoscopic rings etc…
The transport properties of micrometer scale structures fabricated from high-mobility HgTe quantum-wells have been investigated. A special photoresist and Ti masks were used, which allow for the fabrication of devices with characteristic dimensions down to 0.45 $μ$m. Evidence that the transport properties are dominated by ballistic effects in these structures is presented. Monte Carlo simulations of semi-classical electron trajectories show good agreement with the experiment.
We propose a simple experimental technique to separately map the emission from electric and magnetic dipole transitions close to single dielectric nanostructures, using a few nanometer thin film of rare-earth ion doped clusters. Rare-earth ions provide electric and magnetic dipole transitions of similar magnitude. By recording the photoluminescence from the deposited layer excited by a focused laser beam, we are able to simultaneously map the electric and magnetic emission enhancement on individual nanostructures. In spite of being a diffraction-limited far-field method with a spatial resoluti…
The temperature dependence of magnetization in ferromagnetic nanostructures (e.g., nanoparticles or nanoclusters) is usually analyzed by means of an empirical extension of the Bloch law sufficiently flexible for a good fitting to the observed data and indicates a strong softening of magnetic coupling compared to the bulk material. We analytically derive a microscopic generalization of the Bloch law for the Heisenberg spin model which takes into account the effects of size, shape and various surface boundary conditions. The result establishes explicit connection to the microscopic parameters an…
In quasiballistic semiconductor nanostructures, carrier exchange between the active region and dissipative contacts is the mechanism that governs relaxation. In this paper, we present a theoretical treatment of transient quantum transport in quasiballistic semiconductor nanostructures, which is based on the open system theory and valid on timescales much longer than the characteristic relaxation time in the contacts. The approach relies on a model interaction between the current-limiting active region and the contacts, given in the scattering-state basis. We derive a non-Markovian master equat…
We investigate the current-voltage (IV) characteristics of a model single-electron transistor where mechanical motion, subject to strong dissipation, of a small metallic grain is possible. The system is studied both by using Monte Carlo simulations and by using an analytical approach. We show that electromechanical coupling results in a highly nonlinear IV-curve. For voltages above the Coulomb blockade threshold, two distinct regimes of charge transfer occur: At low voltages the system behave as a static asymmetric double junction and tunneling is the dominating charge transfer mechanism. At h…
If the states of spins in solids can be created, manipulated, and measured at the single-quantum level, an entirely new form of information processing, quantum computing and quantum communication, will be possible. We review our proposed spin-quantum dot architecture for a quantum computer and review some recent results on a deterministic source of entanglement generated by coupling quantum dots. Addressing the feasibility of quantum communication with entangled electrons we consider a scattering set-up with an entangler and beam splitter where the current noise exhibits bunching behavior for …
The Fano and Rabi models represent remarkably common effects in optics. Here we study the coherent time dynamics of plasmonic systems exhibiting Fano and Rabi resonances. We demonstrate that these systems show fundamentally different dynamics. A system with a Fano resonance displays at most one temporal beat under pulsed excitation, whereas a system in the Rabi regime may have any number of beats. Remarkably, the Fano-like systems show time dynamics with very characteristic coherent tails despite the strong decoherence that is intrinsic for such systems. The coherent Fano and Rabi dynamics tha…
It is shown that, upon the electron quantum transport via the nanostructure containing a spin dimer, the spin-flip processes caused by the s-f exchange interaction between electron and dimer spins lead to the Fano resonance effects. An applied magnetic field eliminates degeneracy of the upper triplet states of the dimer, changes the conditions for implementation of the Fano resonances and antiresonances, and induces the new Fano resonance and antiresonance. It results in the occurrence of a sharp peak and dip in the energy dependence of transmittance. These effects strongly modify the current-…

Antiferromagnets as active elements of spintronics can be faster than their ferromagnetic counterparts and more robust to magnetic noise. Owing to the strongly exchange-coupled magnetic sublattice structure, antiferromagnetic order parameter dynamics are qualitatively different and thus capable of engendering novel device functionalities. In this review, we discuss antiferromagnetic textures -- nanoparticles, domain walls, and skyrmions, -- under the action of different spin torques. We contrast the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic dynamics, with a focus on the features that can be relevant…
We experimentally demonstrate unidirectional light transmission through two-layer nanostructured materials considering that the horizontal-to-vertical-polarization conversion efficiency in the forward direction and the vertical-to-horizontal efficiency in the backward direction, which are usually equivalent due to optical reciprocity, are different. The different ways of transferring light momentum in the forward and backward directions via optical near-fields between the layers are responsible for the unidirectionality of light, which was theoretically investigated in our recent work [J. Opt.…
The absence of backscattering in metallic nanotubes as well as perfect Klein tunneling in potential barriers in graphene are the prominent electronic characteristics of carbon nanostructures. We show that the phenomena can be explained by a peculiar supersymmetry generated by a first order Hamiltonian and zero order supercharge operators. Like the supersymmetry associated with second order reflectionless finite-gap systems, it relates here the low-energy behavior of the charge carriers with the free particle dynamics.
Low dissipation data processing with spins is one of the promising directions for future information and communication technologies. Despite a signifcant progress, the available magnonic devices are not broadband yet and have restricted capabilities to redirect spin waves. Here we propose a breakthrough approach to the spin wave manipulation in patterned magnetic nanostructures with unmatched characteristics, which exploits spin waves analogous to edge waves propagating along a water-wall boundary. Using theory, micromagnetic simulations and experiment we investigate spin waves propagating alo…
We present a detailed description of semi-quantum molecular dynamics simulation of stochastic dynamics of a system of interacting particles. Within this approach, the dynamics of the system is described with the use of classical Newtonian equations of motion in which the effects of phonon quantum statistics are introduced through random Langevin-like forces with a specific power spectral density (the color noise). The color noise describes the interaction of the molecular system with the thermostat. We apply this technique to the simulation of thermal properties and heat transport in different…
Niobium thin film wires were fabricated using electron beam lithography with a four layer liftoff mask system, and subsequently thinned by anodisation. The resistance along the wire was monitored in situ and trimmed by controlling the anodisation voltage. Depending on the room temperature sheet resistance, samples showed either superconducting or insulating behaviour at low temperatures. A Coulomb blockade was observed for samples exceeding 6 kOhm per square. Samples were also made in a single electron transistor-like geometry with two weak links made by combined angular evaporation and anodis…
We report the creation and real-space observation of magnetic structures with well-defined topological properties and a lateral size as low as about 150 nm. They are generated in a thin ferrimagnetic film by ultrashort single optical laser pulses. Thanks to their topological properties, such structures can be classified as Skyrmions of a particular type that does not require an externally applied magnetic field for stabilization. Besides Skyrmions, we are able to generate magnetic features with topological characteristics that can be tuned by changing the laser fluence. The stability of such f…
We report an anomalous matching effect in MoGe thin films containing pairs of circular holes arranged in such a way that four of those pairs meet at each vertex point of a square lattice. A remarkably pronounced fractional matching was observed in the magnetic field dependences of both the resistance and the critical current. At the half matching field the critical current can be even higher than that at zero field. This has never been observed before for vortices in superconductors with pinning arrays. Numerical simulations within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory reveal a square vortex ic…
We study the local and non-local magnetoresistance of thin Pt strips deposited onto yttrium iron garnet. The local magnetoresistive response, inferred from the voltage drop measured along one given Pt strip upon current-biasing it, shows the characteristic magnetization orientation dependence of the spin Hall magnetoresistance. We simultaneously also record the non-local voltage appearing along a second, electrically isolated, Pt strip, separated from the current carrying one by a gap of a few 100 nm. The corresponding non-local magnetoresistance exhibits the symmetry expected for a magnon spi…
We investigate the dependence of magnetic properties on the out-of-plane disorder strength $Δ$, dipolar interaction strength $h^{}_d$ in two-dimensional ($l^{}_x\times l^{}_y$) ensembles of nanoparticles using numerical simulations. Such positional defects are redundantly observed in experiments. The superparamagnetic character is dominant with negligible and weak interaction strength $h^{}_d$, irrespective of $Δ$ and aspect ratio of the system $A^{}_r=l^{}_y/l^{}_x$. The double-loop hysteresis curve, characteristics of antiferromagnetic coupling dominance, emerges with large $h^{}_d$ and $Δ(\…
