Motivated by a problem of Halmos, we obtain a canonical decomposition for complex matrices which are unitarily equivalent to their transpose (UET). Surprisingly, the naive assertion that a matrix is UET if and only if it is unitarily equivalent to a complex symmetric matrix (i.e., $T = T^t$) holds for matrices 7x7 and smaller, but fails for matrices 8x8 and larger.
We develop a procedure for determining whether a square complex matrix is unitarily equivalent to a complex symmetric (i.e., self-transpose) matrix. Our approach has several advantages over existing methods. We discuss these differences and present a number of examples.
We obtain results on the unitary equivalence of weak contractions of class $C_0$ to their Jordan models under an assumption on their commutants. In particular, our work addresses the case of arbitrary finite multiplicity. The main tool is the theory of boundary representations due to Arveson. We also generalize and improve previously known results concerning unitary equivalence and similarity to Jordan models when the minimal function is a Blaschke product.
In this paper we investigate operators unitarily equivalent to truncated Toeplitz operators. We show that this class contains certain sums of tensor products of truncated Toeplitz operators. In particular, it contains arbitrary inflations of truncated Toeplitz operators; this answers a question posed by Cima, Garcia, Ross, and Wogen.
Let $A$ be a unital separable \CA and $B=C\otimes {\cal K},$ where $C$ is a unital \CA. Let $τ: A\to M(B)/B$ be a weakly unital full essential extensions of $A$ by $B.$ We show that there is a bijection between a quotient group of $K_0(B)$ onto the set of strong unitary equivalence classes of weakly unital full essential extensions $σ$ such that $[σ]=[τ]$ in $KK^1(A, B).$ Consequently, when this group is zero, unitarily equivalent full essential extensions are strongly unitarily equivalent. When $B$ is a non-unital but $σ$-unital simple \CA with continuous scale, we also study the problem when…
We develop several methods, based on the geometric relationship between the eigenspaces of a matrix and its adjoint, for determining whether a square matrix having distinct eigenvalues is unitarily equivalent to a complex symmetric matrix. Equivalently, we characterize those matrices having distinct eigenvalues which lie in the unitary orbit of the complex symmetric matrices.
A matrix $T \in \M_n(\C)$ is \emph{UECSM} if it is unitarily equivalent to a complex symmetric (i.e., self-transpose) matrix. We develop several techniques for studying this property in dimensions three and four. Among other things, we completely characterize $4 \times 4$ nilpotent matrices which are UECSM and we settle an open problem which has lingered in the $3 \times 3$ case. We conclude with a discussion concerning a crucial difference which makes dimension three so different from dimensions four and above
Let $A$ and $B$ be compact operators over a topological space $X$ and suppose that these operators are normal and have same distinct eigenvalues at each point. By obstruction theory, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for $A$ and $B$ to be strongly unitarily equivalent. When $X=S^1$, we also give a sufficient condition for $A$ and $B$ to be approximately unitarily equivalent with some assumption on their eigenvalues.
We establish a characterization of unitary equivalence of two bilateral operator valued weighted shifts with quasi-invertible weights by an operator of diagonal form. We also present an example of unitary equivalence between shifts defined on $\mathbb{C}^2$ which cannot be given by any unitary operator of diagonal form. The paper is concluded with investigation of unitary operators than can give unitary equivalence of bilateral operator valued weighted shifts.
A well-known theorem due to R. E. Curto and N. Salinas gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the unitary equivalence of commuting tuples of bounded linear operators acting on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. Inspired by this theorem, we obtain a different but equivalent criterion for the unitary equivalence of operators acting on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. As an application, we describe the structure of intertwining operator and prove that the decomposition of Cowen-Douglas operators is unique up to unitary equivalence.
Let $C$ be a unital AH-algebra and let $A$ be a unital separable simple C*-algebra with tracial rank no more than one. Suppose that $ϕ, ψ: C\to A$ are two unital monomorphisms. With some restriction on $C,$ we show that $ϕ$ and $ψ$ are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if [ϕ]=[ψ] in KL(C,A) τ\circ ϕ=τ\circ ψfor all tracial states of A and ϕ^‡=ψ^‡, here ϕ^‡ and ψ^‡ are homomorphisms from $U(C)/CU(C)\to U(A)/CU(A) induced by ϕand ψ, respectively, and where CU(C) and CU(A) are closures of the subgroup generated by commutators of the unitary groups of C and B.
It is well known that two finite sequences of vectors in inner product spaces are unitarily equivalent if and only if their respective inner products (Gram matrices) are equal. Here we present a corresponding result for the projective unitary equivalence of two sequences of vectors (lines) in inner product spaces, i.e., that a finite number of (Bargmann) projective (unitary) invariants are equal. This is based on an algorithm to recover the sequence of vectors (up to projective unitary equivalence) from a small subset of these projective invariants. We consider the implications for the charact…
We present a necessary and sufficient condition for a 3 by 3 matrix to be unitarily equivalent to a symmetric matrix with complex entries, and an algorithm whereby an arbitrary 3 by 3 matrix can be tested. This test generalizes to a necessary and sufficient condition that applies to almost every n by n matrix. The test is constructive in that it explicitly exhibits the unitary equivalence to a complex symmetric matrix.
K. He, J. Hou, and M. Li have recently given a sufficient and necessary condition for unitary equivalence of quantum states. This condition is based on the von Neumann entropy. In this note we first give a short proof of their result, and then we improve it.
Unlike Toeplitz operators on $H^2$, truncated Toeplitz operators do not have a natural matricial characterization. Consequently, these operators are difficult to study numerically. In this note we provide criteria for a matrix with distinct eigenvalues to be unitarily equivalent to a truncated Toeplitz operator having an analytic symbol. This test is constructive and we illustrate it with several examples. As a byproduct, we also prove that every complex symmetric operator on a Hilbert space of dimension $\leq 3$ is unitarily equivalent to a direct sum of truncated Toeplitz operators.
In this paper, we describe families of those bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space that are simultaneously unitarily equivalent to integral operators on $L_2(R)$ with bounded and arbitrarily smooth Carleman kernels. The main result is a qualitative sharpening of an earlier result of [7].
We systematically study various aspects of operator-valued multishifts. Beginning with basic properties, we show that the class of multishifts on the directed Cartesian product of rooted directed trees is contained in that of operator-valued multishifts. Further, we establish circularity, analyticity and wandering subspace property of these multishifts. In the rest part of the paper, we study the function theoretic behaviour of operator-valued multishifts. We determine the bounded point evaluation, reproducing kernel structure and the unitary equivalence of operator-valued multishifts with inv…
In this paper, we characterize the families of those bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space which are simultaneously unitarily equivalent to integral bi-Carleman operators on $L_2(R)$ having arbitrarily smooth kernels of Mercer type. The main result is a qualitative sharpening of an earlier result of [7].
Weyl-von Neumann Theorem asserts that two bounded self-adjoint operators $A,B$ on a Hilbert space $H$ are unitarily equivalent modulo compacts, i.e., $uAu^*+K=B$ for some unitary $u\in \mathcal{U}(H)$ and compact self-adjoint operator $K$, if and only if $A$ and $B$ have the same essential spectra: $σ_{\rm{ess}}(A)=σ_{\rm{ess}}(B)$. In this paper we consider to what extent the above Weyl-von Neumann's result can(not) be extended to unbounded operators using descriptive set theory. We show that if $H$ is separable infinite-dimensional, this equivalence relation for bounded self-adjoin operators…
Let $A$ be a bounded, injective and self-adjoint linear operator on a complex separable Hilbert space. We prove that there is a pure isometry, $V$, so that $AV>0$ and $A$ is Hankel with respect to $V$, i.e. $V^*A = AV$, if and only if $A$ is not invertible. The isometry $V$ can be chosen to be isomorphic to $N \in \mathbb{N} \cup \{ + \infty \}$ copies of the unilateral shift if $A$ has spectral multiplicity at most $N$. We further show that the set of all isometries, $V$, so that $A$ is Hankel with respect to $V$, are in bijection with the set of all closed, symmetric restrictions of $A^{-1}$…
For an operator $T$ in the class ${\mathrm B}_n(Ω)$, introduced in \cite{CD}, the simultaneous unitary equivalence class of the curvature and the covariant derivatives up to a certain order of the corresponding bundle $E_T$ determine the unitary equivalence class of the operator $T$. In the paper \cite{CD2}, the authors ask if there exists some pair of inequivalent oprators $T_1$ and $T_2$ for which the simultaneous unitary equivalence class of the curvature along with all the covariant derivatives coincide except for the derivative of the highest order. Here we show that some of the covariant…
Let $A$ be a densely defined simple symmetric operator in $\gH$, let $Π=\bt$ be a boundary triplet for $A^*$ and let $M(\cd)$ be the corresponding Weyl function. It is known that the Weyl function $M(\cd)$ determines the boundary triplet $Π$, in particular, the pair ${A,A_0}$, where $A_0:= A^*\lceil\ker\G_0 (= A^*_0)$, uniquely up to unitary similarity. At the same time the Weyl function corresponding to a boundary triplet for a dual pair of operators defines it uniquely only up to weak similarity. In this paper we consider symmetric dual pairs ${A,A}$ generated by $A\subset A^*$ and special b…
The spectral problem for self-adjoint extensions is studied using the machinery of boundary triplets. For a class of symmetric operators having Weyl functions of a special type we calculate explicitly the spectral projections in the form of operator-valued integrals. This allows one to give a constructive proof of the fact that, in certain intervals, the resulting self-adjoint extensions are unitarily equivalent to a certain parameterizing operator acting in a smaller space, and one is able to provide an explicit form the associated unitary transform. Applications to differential operators on …
A truncated Toeplitz operator is the compression $A_ϕ:\K_Θ \to \K_Θ$ of a Toeplitz operator $T_ϕ:H^2\to H^2$ to a model space $\K_Θ := H^2 \ominus ΘH^2$. For $Θ$ inner, let $\T_Θ$ denote the set of all bounded truncated Toeplitz operators on $\K_Θ$. Our main result is a necessary and sufficient condition on inner functions $Θ_1$ and $Θ_2$ which guarantees that $\mathcal{T}_{Θ_1}$ and $\mathcal{T}_{Θ_2}$ are spatially isomorphic (i.e., $U\T_{Θ_1} = \T_{Θ_2}U$ for some unitary $U:\K_{Θ_1} \to \K_{Θ_2}$). We also study operators which are unitarily equivalent to truncated Toeplitz operators and w…
The unitary equivalence of $2$-isometric operators satisfying the so-called kernel condition is characterized. It relies on a model for such operators built on operator valued unilateral weighted shifts and on a characterization of the unitary equivalence of operator valued unilateral weighted shifts in a fairly general context. A complete system of unitary invariants for $2$-isometric weighted shifts on rooted directed trees satisfying the kernel condition is provided. It is formulated purely in the langauge of graph-theory, namely in terms of certain generation branching degrees. The members…
In this paper, we study unitary Gaussian processes with independent increments with which the unitary equivalence to a Hudson-Parthasarathy evolution systems is proved. This gives a generalization of results in [16] and [17] in the absence of the stationarity condition.
Consider the minimal Sturm-Liouville operator $A = A_{\rm min}$ generated by the differential expression $\mathcal{A} := -\frac{d^2}{dt^2} + T$ in the Hilbert space $L^2(\mathbb{R}_+,\mathcal{H})$ where $T = T^*\ge 0$ in $\mathcal{H}$. We investigate the absolutely continuous parts of different self-adjoint realizations of $\mathcal{A}$. In particular, we show that Dirichlet and Neumann realizations, $A^D$ and $A^N$, are absolutely continuous and unitary equivalent to each other and to the absolutely continuous part of the Krein realization. Moreover, if $\infσ_{ess}(T) = \infσ(T) \ge 0$, then…
The classical Weyl-von Neumann theorem states that for any self-adjoint operator $A$ in a separable Hilbert space $\mathfrak H$ there exists a (non-unique) Hilbert-Schmidt operator $C = C^*$ such that the perturbed operator $A+C$ has purely point spectrum. We are interesting whether this result remains valid for non-additive perturbations by considering self-adjoint extensions of a given densely defined symmetric operator $A$ in $\mathfrak H$ and fixing an extension $A_0 = A_0^*$. We show that for a wide class of symmetric operators the absolutely continuous parts of extensions $\widetilde A =…
