We present a compelling evidence for the opening of a bandgap in exfoliated bottom-gated bilayer graphene by fitting the gate-voltage modulated infrared reflectivity spectra in a large range of doping levels with a tight-binding model and the Kubo formula. A close quantitative agreement between the experimental and calculated spectra is achieved, allowing us to determine self-consistently the full set of Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure tight-binding parameters together with the gate-voltage dependent bandgap. The doping dependence of the bandgap shows a good agreement with the existing calculations that take the effects of self-screening into account. We also identify certain mismatches between the tight-binding model and the data, which can be related to electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions.
A theory is presented for the strong enhancement of graphene-on-substrate bandgaps by attractive interactions mediated through phonons in a polarizable superstrate. It is demonstrated that gaps of up to 1eV can be formed for experimentally achievable values of electron-phonon coupling and phonon frequency. Gap enhancements range between 1 and 4, indicating possible benefits to graphene electronics through greater bandgap control for digital applications, lasers, LEDs and photovoltaics through the relatively simple application of polarizable materials such as SiO2 and Si3N4.
The intercalant alkaline metals, Ca, Sr, & Ba, are sources of a periodic perturbation on the bilayer graphene, which leads to the formation of an N-type semiconductors. The twist angle between graphene layers applies disorder to the intercalated bilayer graphene to tune the bandgap. The twisted bilayer graphene structures of C8MC8 (M: Ca, Sr, Ba) were studied for the Energy band diagrams, Density of States, transport properties of Seebeck coefficient, Hall coefficient, Thermal conductivity, and Electrical conductivity using Quantum-Espresso and BoltzTrap software. The bandgap enhances with res…
We report on composition controlled MoS$_{2}$ and MoO$_{x}$ (x=2 and 3) compounds electrodeposited on Flourine dopped Tin Oxide (FTO) substrate. It was observed that the relative content has systematic electrical and optical changes for different thicknesses of layers ranging from $\approx$20 to 540 nm. Optical and electrical bandgaps reveals a tuneable behavior by controlling the relative content of compounds as well as a sharp transition from p to n-type of semiconductivity. Moreover, spin-orbit interaction of Mo 3d doublet enhances by reduction of MoO$_{3}$ content in thicker films. Our res…
Electronically gated bilayer graphene behaves as a tunable gap semiconductor under a uniform interlayer bias $V_{g}$. Imposing a spatially varying bias, which changes polarity from $-V_g$ to $+V_g$, leads to one dimensional (1D) chiral modes localized along the domain wall of the bias. Due to the broad transverse spread of their low-energy wavefunctions, we find that the dominant interaction between these 1D electrons is the forward scattering part of the Coulomb repulsion. Incorporating these interactions and the gate voltage dependence of the dispersion and wavefunctions, we find that these …
Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) phases in magnetic topological insulators are characterized by the scattering-free chiral edge currents protected by their nontrivial bulk band topology. To fully explore these intriguing phenomena and application of topological insulators, high temperature material realization of QAH phases is crucial. In this paper, based on extensive first-principles density functional theory calculations, we predict that perovskite bilayers (LaXO$_3$)$_{2}$ (X = Pd, Pt) imbedded in the (111) (LaXO$_3$)$_{2}$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_{10}$ superlattices are high Curie temperature ferromagne…
We observe a giant increase of the infrared intensity and a softening of the in-plane antisymmetric phonon mode Eu (~0.2 eV) in bilayer graphene as a function of the gate-induced doping. The phonon peak has a pronounced Fano-like asymmetry. We suggest that the intensity growth and the softening originate from the coupling of the phonon mode to the narrow electronic transition between parallel bands of the same character, while the asymmetry is due to the interaction with the continuum of transitions between the lowest hole and electron bands. The growth of the peak is a manifestation of the "c…
The emergence of ferromagnetism in two-dimensional van der Waals materials has aroused broad interest. However, the ferromagnetic instability has been a problem remained. In this work, by using the first-principles calculations, we identified the critical ranges of strain and doping for the bilayer Cr2Ge2Te6 within which the ferromagnetic stability can be enhanced. Beyond the critical range, the tensile strain can induce the phase transition from the ferromagnetic to the antiferromagnetic, and the direction of magnetic easy axis can be converted from out-of-plane to in-plane due to the increas…
We demonstrate gate-tunable resonant tunneling and negative differential resistance in the interlayer current-voltage characteristics of rotationally aligned double bilayer graphene heterostructures separated by hexagonal boron-nitride (hBN) dielectric. An analysis of the heterostructure band alignment using individual layer densities, along with experimentally determined layer chemical potentials indicates that the resonance occurs when the energy bands of the two bilayer graphene are aligned. We discuss the tunneling resistance dependence on the interlayer hBN thickness, as well as the reson…
We study the magnetotransport properties of dual-gated graphene bilayers, in which the total density and layer density imbalance are independently controlled. As the bilayer is imbalanced we observe the emergence of a quantum Hall state (QHS) at filling factor $ν=0$ evinced by a plateau in the Hall conductivity, consistent with the opening of a gap between the electron and hole bands. By varying the layer density imbalance at fixed total density, we observe a suppression of the QHS at filling factors $ν=8$ and $ν=12$ when the layer densities are balanced, an observation at variance with theore…
The recent discovery of correlated insulator states and superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has paved the way to the experimental investigation of electronic correlations in tunable flat band systems realized in twisted van der Waals heterostructures. This novel twist angle degree of freedom and control should be generalizable to other 2D systems, which may exhibit similar correlated physics behavior while at the same time enabling new techniques to tune and control the strength of electron-electron interactions. Here, we report on a new highly tunable correlated system b…
We study the electronic properties of AA-stacked bilayer graphene in a transverse electric field. The strong on-site Coulomb repulsion stabilizes the antiferromagnetic order in such a system. The antiferromagnetic order is suppressed by the transverse bias voltage, at least partially. The inter-plane Coulomb repulsion and non-zero voltage stabilize an exciton order parameter. The exciton order parameter coexists with the antiferromagnetism and can be as large as several tens of meV for realistic values of the bias voltage and interaction constants. The application of a transverse bias voltage …
We predict twisted double bilayer graphene to be a versatile platform for the realization of fractional Chern insulators readily targeted by tuning the gate potential and the twist angle. Remarkably, these topologically ordered states of matter, including spin singlet Halperin states and spin polarized states in Chern number $\mathcal C=1$ and $\mathcal{C}= 2$ bands, occur at high temperatures and without the need for an external magnetic field.
We develop a proposal to realise a widely tunable and clean quantum phase transition in bilayer graphene between two paradigmatic fractionalized phases of matter: the Moore-Read fractional quantum Hall state and the composite Fermi liquid metal. This transition can be realized at total fillings $ν=\pm 3+1/2$ and the critical point can be controllably accessed by tuning either the interlayer electric bias or the perpendicular magnetic field values over a wide range of parameters. We study the transition numerically within a model that contains all leading single particle corrections to the band…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures with flat electronic bands have recently emerged as a platform for realizing correlated and topological states with an extraordinary degree of control and tunability. In graphene-based moiré heterostructures, the correlated phase diagram and band topology depend strongly on the number of graphene layers, their relative stacking arrangement, and details of the external environment from the encapsulating crystals. Here, we report that the system of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) hosts a variety of correlated metallic and insulating states, as wel…
We use temperature-dependent resistivity in small-angle twisted double bilayer graphene to measure bandwidths and gaps of the bands. This electron-hole asymmetric system has one set of non-dispersing bands that splits into two flat bands with the electric field - distinct from the twisted bilayer system. With electric field, the gap between two emergent flat bands increases monotonically and bandwidth is tuned from 1 meV to 15 meV. These two flat bands with gap result in a series of thermally induced insulator to metal transitions - we use a model, at charge neutrality, to measure the bandwidt…
A properly strained graphene monolayer or bilayer is expected to harbour periodic pseudo-magnetic fields with high symmetry, yet to date, a convincing demonstration of such pseudo-magnetic fields has been lacking, especially for bilayer graphene. Here, we report the first definitive experimental proof for the existence of large-area, periodic pseudo-magnetic fields, as manifested by vortex lattices in commensurability with the moiré patterns of low-angle twisted bilayer graphene. The pseudo-magnetic fields are strong enough to confine the massive Dirac electrons into circularly localized pseud…
Flat bands in twisted moire superlattices support a variety of topological and strongly correlated phenomena along with easily tunable electrical and optical properties. Here, we demonstrate the existence of tunable, long-lived, and flat intraband and interband terahertz plasmons in twisted double bilayer graphene. We show that the interband plasmons originate from the presence of a Van Hove singularity in the joint density of states and a finite Berry connection between the pair of bands involved. We find that the gapped interband plasmon mode has a universal dispersion, and the plasmon gap i…
Feshbach resonances are an invaluable tool in atomic physics, enabling precise control of interactions and the preparation of complex quantum phases of matter. Here, we theoretically analyze a solid-state analogue of a Feshbach resonance in two dimensional semiconductor heterostructures. In the presence of inter-layer electron tunneling, the scattering of excitons and electrons occupying different layers can be resonantly enhanced by tuning an applied electric field. The emergence of an inter-layer Feshbach molecule modifies the optical excitation spectrum, and can be understood in terms of Fe…
Twisted graphene bilayers provide a versatile platform to engineer metamaterials with novel emergent properties by exploiting the resulting geometric moiré superlattice. Such superlattices are known to host bulk valley currents at tiny angles ($α\approx 0.3 ^\circ$) and flat bands at magic angles ($α\approx 1^\circ$). We show that tuning the twist angle to $α^*\approx 0.8^\circ$ generates flat bands away from charge neutrality with a triangular superlattice periodicity. When doped with $\pm 6$ electrons per moiré cell, these bands are half-filled and electronic interactions produce a symmetry-…
The effective theory for bilayer graphene (BLG), subject to parallel/in-plane magnetic fields, is derived. With a sizable magnetic field the trigonal warping becomes irrelevant, and one ends up with two Dirac points in the vicinity of each valley in the low-energy limit, similar to the twisted BLG. Combining twisting and parallel field thus gives rise to a Dirac system with tunable Fermi velocity and cutoff. If the interactions are sufficiently strong, several fully gapped states can be realized in these systems, in addition to the ones in a pristine setup. Transformations of the order paramet…
A variety of correlated phases have recently emerged in select twisted van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures owing to their flat electronic dispersions. In particular, heterostructures of twisted double bilayer graphene (tDBG) manifest electric field-tunable correlated insulating (CI) states at all quarter fillings of the conduction band, accompanied by nearby states featuring signatures suggestive of superconductivity. Here, we report electrical transport measurements of tDBG in which we elucidate the fundamental role of spontaneous symmetry breaking within its correlated phase diagram. We obs…
According to electronic structure theory, bilayer graphene is expected to have anomalous electronic properties when it has long-period moiré patterns produced by small misalignments between its individual layer honeycomb lattices. We have realized bilayer graphene moiré crystals with accurately controlled twist angles smaller than 1 degree and studied their properties using scanning probe microscopy and electron transport. We observe conductivity minima at charge neutrality, satellite gaps that appear at anomalous carrier densities for twist angles smaller than 1 degree, and tunneling densitie…
