By using the 3+1 point of view and parametrized Minkowski theories we develop the theory of {\it non-inertial} frames in Minkowski space-time. The transition from a non-inertial frame to another one is a gauge transformation connecting the respective notions of instantaneous 3-space (clock synchronization convention) and of the 3-coordinates inside them. As a particular case we get the extension of the inertial rest-frame instant form of dynamics to the non-inertial rest-frame one. We show that every isolated system can be described as an external decoupled non-covariant canonical center of mass (described by frozen Jacobi data) carrying a pole-dipole structure: the invariant mass and an effective spin. Moreover we identify the constraints eliminating the internal 3-center of mass inside the instantaneous 3-spaces. In the case of the isolated system of positive-energy scalar particles with Grassmann-valued electric charges plus the electro-magnetic field we obtain both Maxwell equations and their Hamiltonian description in non-inertial frames. Then by means of a non-covariant decomposition we define the non-inertial radiation gauge and we find the form of the non-covariant Coulomb potential. We identify the coordinate-dependent relativistic inertial potentials and we show that they have the correct Newtonian limit. In the second paper we will study properties of Maxwell equations in non-inertial frames like the wrap-up effect and the Faraday rotation in astrophysics. Also the 3+1 description without coordinate-singularities of the rotating disk and the Sagnac effect will be given, with added comments on pulsar magnetosphere and on a relativistic extension of the Earth-fixed coordinate system.
We discuss two nonlocal models of electrodynamics in which the nonlocality is induced by the acceleration of the observer. Such an observer actually measures an electromagnetic field that exhibits persistent memory effects. We compare Mashhoon's model with a new ansatz developed here in the framework of charge & flux electrodynamics with a constitutive law involving the Levi-Civita connection as seen from the observer's local frame and conclude that they are in partial agreement only for the case of constant acceleration.
We apply the theory of non-inertial frames in Minkowski space-time, developed in the previous paper, to various relevant physical systems. We give the 3+1 description without coordinate-singularities of the rotating disk and the Sagnac effect, with added comments on pulsar magnetosphere and on a relativistic extension of the Earth-fixed coordinate system. Then we study properties of Maxwell equations in non-inertial frames like the wrap-up effect and the Faraday rotation in astrophysics.
Maxwell's vacuum equations are integrated for admissible electromagnetic fields in homogeneous spaces. Admissible electromagnetic fields are those for which the space group generates an algebra of symmetry operators ( integrals of motion ) that is isomorphic to the algebra of group operators. Two frames associated with the group of motions are used to obtain systems of ordinary differential equations to which Maxwell's equations reduce. The solutions are obtained in quadratures. The potentials of the admissible electromagnetic fields and the metrics of the spaces contained in the obtained solu…
We consider the interaction between gravitational and electromagnetic radiation propagating on a Minkowski background and look into the effects of the former upon the latter. Not surprisingly, the coupling between these two sources leads to gravitationally driven electromagnetic waves. At the second perturbative level, the driving force appears as the superposition of two waves, the properties of which are decided by the initial conditions. We find that the Weyl-Maxwell interaction typically leads to electromagnetic beat-like signals and, in some cases, to the resonant amplification of the dri…
It is important to re-examine some of the interactions of gravitational waves with matter due to the recent discovery of the waves in LIGO. In a previous paper with Morales, interaction of gravitational waves was studied with scalar and neutrino fields in Minkowski space-time. In this paper, we find that electromagnetic waves have a similar interaction with gravitational wave in a flat background, and we comment on the implications of this for a gravitational wave detector. Primordial gravitational waves were generated in the early universe and thus it is important to study interaction of the …
The usual pre-metric Maxwell equations of electromagnetism in Minkowski space are extended to five dimensions, and the equations of linear five-dimensional electromagnetic waves are obtained from them by using the simplest electromagnetic constitutive law. The role of the dispersion law for five-dimensional plane waves in dictating the most appropriate extension of the four-dimensional Minkowski space metric to the five-dimensional one is discussed. The fact that the five-dimensional dispersion law includes both massless waves and massive ones is emphasized, as well as the fact that one can ob…
We discuss some aspects of the differential geometry of curves in Minkowski space. We establish the Serret-Frenet equations in Minkowski space and use them to give a very simple proof of the fundamental theorem of curves in Minkowski space. We also state and prove two other theorems which represent Minkowskian versions of a very known theorem of the differential geometry of curves in tridimensional Euclidean space. We discuss the general solution for torsionless paths in Minkowki space. We then apply the four-dimensional Serret-Frenet equations to describe the motion of a charged test particle…
We study accelerating relativistic reference frames in Minkowski space-time under the harmonic gauge. It is well-known that the harmonic gauge imposes constraints on the components of the metric tensor and also on the functional form of admissible coordinate transformations. These two sets of constraints are equivalent and represent the dual nature of the harmonic gauge. We explore this duality and show that the harmonic gauge allows presenting an accelerated metric in an elegant form that depends only on two harmonic potentials. It also allows reconstruction of the spatial structure of the po…
We begin with the time-dependent electric and magnetic dipole solution of Maxwell's equations in Minkowski space. This Maxwell field is then used to determine the behavior of the gravitational field (the Weyl tensor) as a second-order perturbation off of the Minkowski background. From the Weyl tensor we go on and find the spin-coefficients and the full metric in this approximation. The physical meaning of many of the relations is discussed. In particular we can identify the conservation law of angular momentum that contains an angular momentum flux term.
The basic concepts of the formulation of Maxwellian electromagnetism in the absence of a Minkowski scalar product on spacetime are summarized, with particular emphasis on the way that the electromagnetic constitutive law on the space of bivectors over spacetime supplants the role of the Minkowski scalar product on spacetime itself. The complex geometry of the space of bivectors is summarized, with the intent of showing how an isomorphic copy of the Lorentz group appears in that context. The use of complex 3-spinors to represent electromagnetic fields is then discussed, as well as the expansion…

After a review of the 1+3 point of view on non-inertial observers and of the problems of rotating reference frames, we underline that was is lacking in their treatment is a good global notion of simultaneity due to the restricted validity of the existing 4-coordinates associated to an accelerated observer (like the Fermi normal ones). We show that the relativistic Hamiltonian 3+1 point of view, based on a 3+1 splitting of Minkowski space-time with a foliation whose space-like leaves are both simultaneity and Cauchy surfaces, allows to find a solution to such problems, if we take into account M…
The quantum interest conjecture of Ford and Roman states that any negative energy flux in a free quantum field must be preceded or followed by a positive flux of greater magnitude, and the surplus of positive energy grows the further the positive and negative fluxes are apart. In addition, the maximum possible separation between the positive and negative energy decreases the larger the amount of negative energy. We prove that the quantum interest conjecture holds for arbitrary fluxes of non-interacting scalar fields in 4D Minkowski spacetime, and discuss the consequences in attempting to viola…
In this paper it is introduced and studied an alternative theory of gravitation in flat Minkowski space. Using an antisymmetric tensor, which is analogous to the tensor of electromagnetic field, a non-linear connection is introduced. It is very convenient for studying the perihelion/periastron shift, deflection of the light rays near the Sun and the frame dragging together with geodetic precession, i.e. effects where angles are involved. Although the corresponding results are obtained in rather different way, they are the same as in the General Relativity. The results about the barycenter of t…
The no-signalling principle preventing superluminal communication is a limiting paradigm for physical theories. Within the information-theoretic framework it is commonly understood in terms of admissible correlations in composite systems. Here we unveil its complementary incarnation --- the 'dynamical no-signalling principle' ---, which forbids superluminal signalling via measurements on simple physical objects (e.g. particles) evolving in time. We show that it imposes strong constraints on admissible models of dynamics. The posited principle is universal --- it can be applied to any theory (c…
The AdS-Melvin spacetime was introduced by Astorino and models the AdS soliton with electromagnetic charge. It is a static spacetime with a time-symmetric Cauchy hypersurface, which we refer to as the AdS-Melvin space. In this paper, we study a sharp Minkowski-type inequality for surfaces embedded in the AdS-Melvin space. We first prove the inequality for special cases in which the surface enjoys axisymmetry or is a small perturbation of a coordinate torus. We then use a weighted normal flow to show that the inequality holds for general surfaces.
We use Weyl transformations between the Minkowski spacetime and dS/AdS spacetime to show that one cannot well define the electrodynamics globally on the ordinary conformal compactification of the Minkowski spacetime (or dS/AdS spacetime), where the electromagnetic field has a sign factor (and thus is discountinuous) at the light cone. This problem is intuitively and clearly shown by the Penrose diagrams, from which one may find the remedy without too much difficulty. We use the Minkowski and dS spacetimes together to cover the compactified space, which in fact leads to the doubled conformal co…
Whenever an alternative theory of gravity is formulated in a background Minkowski space, the conditions characterizing admissible coordinate systems, in which the alternative theory of gravity may be applied, play an important role. We here propose Lorentz covariant coordinate conditions for the composite theory of pure gravity developed from the Yang-Mills theory based on the Lorentz group, thereby completing this previously proposed higher derivative theory of gravity. The physically relevant static isotropic solutions are determined by various methods, the high-precision predictions of gene…
In this article, we study the coupling of the Einstein field equations of general relativity to a family of models of nonlinear electromagnetic fields. The family comprises all covariant electromagnetic models that satisfy the following criteria: they are derivable from a sufficiently regular Lagrangian, they reduce to the linear Maxwell model in the weak-field limit, and their corresponding energy-momentum tensors satisfy the dominant energy condition. Our main result is a proof of the global nonlinear stability of the 1 + 3-dimensional Minkowski spacetime solution to the coupled system for a…
Deformed Special Relativity (DSR) is a generalization of Special Relativity based on a deformed Minkowski space, i.e. a four-dimensional space-time with metric coefficients depending on the energy. We show that, in the DSR framework, it is possible to derive the value of the electron mass from the space-time geometry via the experimental knowledge of the parameter of local Lorentz invariance breakdown, and of the Minkowskian threshold energy $E_{0,em}$ for the electromagnetic interaction.

All existing 4-coordinate systems centered on the world-line of an accelerated observer are only locally defined like it happens for Fermi coordinates both in special and general relativity. As a consequence, it is not known how non-inertial observers can build {\it equal-time surfaces} which a) correspond to a conventional observer-dependent definition of synchronization of distant clocks; b) are good Cauchy surfaces for Maxwell equations. Another type of coordinate singularities are those connected to the relativistic rotating coordinate systems (the rotating disk). We show that the use of Ha…
We show that a nontrivial topologies of the spatial section of Minkowski space-time allow for motion of a charged particle under quantum vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. This is a potentially observable effect of these vacuum fluctuations. We derive mean squared velocity dispersion when the charged particle lies in Minkowski space-time with compact spatial sections in one, two and/or three directions. We concretely examine the details of these stochastic motions when the spatial section is endowed with different globally homogeneous and inhomogeneous topologies. We also show t…
Recently, Bennett et al. [Eur. J. Phys. 37:014001, 2016] presented a physically-motivated and explicitly gauge-independent scheme for the quantisation of the electromagnetic field in flat Minkowski space. In this paper we generalise this field quantisation scheme to curved spacetimes. Working within the standard assumptions of quantum field theory and only postulating the physicality of the photon, we derive the Hamiltonian, H, and the electric and magnetic field observables, E and B, without having to invoke a specific gauge. As an example, we quantise the electromagnetic field in the spaceti…
The algebras of the symmetry operators for the Hamilton-Jacobi and Klein-Gordon-Fock equations are found for a charged test particle moving in an external electromagnetic field in a spacetime manifold, on the isotropic (null) hypersurface of which a three-parameter groups of motions act transitively.on the isotropic (null) hypersurface of which a three-parameter groups of motions act transitively. We have found all admissible electromagnetic fields for which such algebras exist. We have proved that an admissible field does not deform the algebra of symmetry operators for the free Hamilton-Jaco…
Hyperbolic metamaterials were originally introduced to overcome the diffraction limit of optical imaging. Soon thereafter it was realized that they demonstrate a number of novel phenomena resulting from the broadband singular behavior of their density of photonic states. These novel phenomena and applications include microscopy, stealth technologies, enhanced quantum-electrodynamic effects, thermal hyperconductivity, superconductivity, and interesting gravitation theory analogues. Here we describe the behaviour of cobalt nanoparticle-based ferrofluid in the presence of an external magnetic fie…
The problem of classification of exact solutions of Maxwell's vacuum equations for admissible electromagnetic fields and homogeneous space-time with the group of motions $G_3(VIII)$ according to the Bianchi classification is considered. All non-equivalent solutions are found. The classification problem for remaining groups of motions $G_3(N)$ has already been solved in the other papers. That is why all non-equivalent solutions of empty Maxwell equations for all homogeneous spaces with admissible electromagnetic fields are known now.
Orientability is an important topological property of spacetime manifolds. It is generally assumed that a test for spatial orientability requires a journey across the whole 3-space to check for orientation-reversing paths. Since such a global expedition is not feasible, theoretical arguments that combine universality of physical experiments with local arrow of time, CP violation and CPT invariance are offered to support the choosing of time- and space-orientable spacetime manifolds. We show that it is possible to access spatial orientability of Minkowski spacetime through local physical effect…
The electromagnetic theory is considered in the framework of the generally covariant approach, that is applied to the analysis of electromagnetism in noninertial coordinate and frame systems. The special-relat\-ivistic formulation of Maxwell's electrodynamics arises in the flat Minkowski spacetime when the general coordinate transformations are restricted to a class of transformations preserving the Minkowski line element. The particular attention is paid to the analysis of the electromagnetism in the noninertial rotating reference system. For the latter case, the general stationary solution o…
The rich structure of solid state physics provides us with Dirac materials the effective theory of which enjoys the Lorentz symmetry. In non-symmorphic lattices, the Lorentz symmetry will be deformed in a way that the null energy-momentum vectors will correspond to on-shell condition for tilted Dirac cone dispersion. In this sense, tilted Dirac/Weyl materials can be viewed as solid state systems where the effective spacetime is non-Minkowski. In this work, we show that the polarization tensor for tilted Dirac cone systems acquires a covariant from only when the spacetime is considered to be an…
We study the problem of the definition of the energy-momentum tensor of light in general moving non-dispersive media with linear constitutive law. Using the basic principles of classical field theory, we show that for the correct understanding of the problem, one needs to carefully distinguish situations when the material medium is modeled either as a background on which light propagates or as a dynamical part of the total system. In the former case, we prove that the (generalized) Belinfante-Rosenfeld (BR) tensor for the electromagnetic field coincides with the Minkowski tensor. We derive a c…
