We prove a no-ghost theorem for a bosonic string propagating in Nappi-Witten spacetime. This is achieved in two steps. We first demonstrate unitarity for a class of NW/U(1) modules: the norm of any state which is primary with respect to a chosen timelike U(1) is non-negative. We then show that physical states - states satisfying the Virasoro constraints - in a class of modules of an affinisation of the Nappi-Witten algebra are contained in the NW/U(1) modules. Similar to the case of strings on $AdS_3$, in order to saturate the spectrum obtained in light-cone quantization we are led to include modules with energy not bounded from below, which are related to modules with energy bounded from below by spectral flow automorphisms.
The vanishing of the anomaly in the recent example of Nappi and Witten, constructed from the Wess-Zumino-Witten model based on a certain non-semisimple group, follows from a more general result valid for gravitational waves. The construction of the metric is explained.}
We re-examine the problem of determining the possible D-branes in the Nappi-Witten background. In addition to the known branes, we find that there are also D-instantons, flat euclidean D-strings and curved D-membranes admitting parallel spinors, all of which can be interpreted as (twisted) conjugacy classes in the Nappi-Witten group.
We show that the Extended Bargmann and Newton-Hooke algebras in 2+1 dimensions can be obtained as expansions of the Nappi-Witten algebra. The result can be generalized to obtain two infinite families of non-relativistic symmetries, which include the Maxwellian Exotic Bargmann symmetry, its generalized Newton-Hooke counterpart, and its Hietarinta dual. In each case, the invariant bilinear form on the Nappi-Witten algebra leads to the invariant tensor on the expanded algebra, allowing one to construct the corresponding Chern-Simons gravity theory.
We investigate D-branes in the Nappi-Witten model. Classically symmetric D-branes are classified by the (twisted) conjugacy classes of the Nappi-Witten group, which specify the geometry of the corresponding D-branes. Quantum description of the D-branes is given by boundary states, and we need one point functions of closed strings to construct the boundary states. We compute the one point functions solving conformal bootstrap constraints, and check that the classical limit of the boundary states reproduces the geometry of D-branes.
We find exact D-brane configurations in the Nappi-Witten background using the boundary state approach and describe how they are related by T-duality transformations. We also show that the classical boundary conditions of the associated sigma model correspond to a field dependent automorphism relating the chiral currents and discuss the correspondence between the boundary state approach and the sigma model approach.
Lorentzian signature D-branes of all dimensions for the Nappi-Witten string are constructed. This is done by rewriting the gluing condition $J_+=FJ_-$ for the model chiral currents on the brane as a well posed first order differential problem and by solving it for Lie algebra isometries $F$ other than Lie algebra automorphisms. By construction, these D-branes are not twined conjugacy classes. Metrically degenerate D-branes are also obtained.
We construct D-branes in the Nappi-Witten (NW) and Guadagnini-Martellini-Mintchev (GMM) gauged WZW models. For the $SL(2,R)\times SU(2)/U(1)\times U(1)$ NW and $SU(2)\times SU(2)/U(1)$ GMM models we present the explicit equations describing the D-brane hypersurfaces in their target spaces. In the latter case we show that the D-branes are classified according to the Cardy theorem. We also present the semiclassical mass computation and find its agreement with the CFT predictions.
We study D-branes in the Nappi-Witten model, which is a gauged WZW model based on (SL(2,R) x SU(2)) / (U(1) x U(1)). The model describes a four dimensional space-time consisting of cosmological regions with big bang/big crunch singularities and static regions with closed time-like curves. The aim of this paper is to investigate by D-brane probes whether there are pathologies associated with the cosmological singularities and the closed time-like curves. We first classify D-branes in a group theoretical way, and then examine DBI actions for effective theories on the D-branes. In particular, we …
The Nappi-Witten model is a Wess-Zumino-Witten model in which the target space is the nonreductive Heisenberg group $H_4$. We consider the representation theory underlying this conformal field theory. Specifically, we study the category of weight modules, with finite-dimensional weight spaces, over the associated affine vertex operator algebra $\mathsf{H}_4$. In particular, we classify the irreducible $\mathsf{H}_4$-modules in this category and compute their characters. We moreover observe that this category is nonsemisimple, suggesting that the Nappi-Witten model is a logarithmic conformal fi…
Motivated by the recent progresses in the formulation of geometric theories for the fractional quantum Hall states, we propose a novel non-relativistic geometric model for the Laughlin states based on an extension of the Nappi-Witten geometry. We show that the U(1) gauge sector responsible for the fractional Hall conductance, the gravitational Chern-Simons action and Wen-Zee term associated to the Hall viscosity can be derived from a single Chern-Simons theory with a gauge connection that takes values in the extended Nappi-Witten algebra. We then provide a new derivation of the chiral boson as…
We investigate the Hamiltonian analysis of Nappi-Witten model (WZW action based on non semi simple gauge group) and find a time dependent non-commutativity by canonical quantization. Our procedure is based on constraint analysis of the model in two parts. A first class analysis is used for gauge fixing the original model following by a second class analysis in which the boundary condition are treated as Dirac constraints. We find the reduced phase space by imposing our second class constraints on the variables in an extended Fourier space.
We study Yang-Baxter deformations of the Nappi-Witten model with a prescription invented by Delduc, Magro and Vicedo. The deformations are specified by skew-symmetric classical $r$-matrices satisfying (modified) classical Yang-Baxter equations. We show that the sigma-model metric is invariant under arbitrary deformations (while the coefficient of $B$-field is changed) by utilizing the most general classical $r$-matrix. Furthermore, the coefficient of $B$-field is determined to be the original value from the requirement that the one-loop $β$-function should vanish. After all, the Nappi-Witten m…
We show that infinite families of non-relativistic spin-$3$ symmetries in $2+1$ dimensions, which include higher-spin extensions of the Bargmann, Newton-Hooke, non-relativistic Maxwell, and non-relativistic AdS-Lorentz algebras, can be obtained as Lie algebra expansions of two different spin-$3$ extensions of the Nappi-Witten symmetry. These higher-spin Nappi-Witten algebras, in turn, are obtained by means of Inönü-Wigner contractions applied to suitable direct product extensions of $\mathfrak{sl}(3,\mathbb{R})$. Conversely, we show that the same result can be obtained by considering contracti…
Departing from the observation that the Penrose limit of AdS_3 x S^3 is a group contraction in the sense of Inonu and Wigner, we explore the relation between the symmetric D-branes of AdS_3 x S^3 and those of its Penrose limit, a six-dimensional symmetric plane wave analogous to the four-dimensional Nappi--Witten spacetime. Both backgrounds are Lie groups admitting bi-invariant lorentzian metrics and symmetric D-branes wrap their (twisted) conjugacy classes. We determine the (twisted and untwisted) symmetric D-branes in the plane wave background and we prove the existence of a space-filling D5…
WZW models are abstract conformal field theories with an infinite dimensional symmetry which accounts for their integrability, and at the same time they have a sigma model description of closed string propagation on group manifolds which, in turn, endows the models with an intuitive geometric meaning. We exploit this dual algebraic and geometric property of WZW models to construct an explicit example of a field-dependent reflection matrix for open-strings in Nappi-Witten model. Demanding the momentum outflow at the boundary to be zero determines a certain combination of the left and right chir…
The Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) ghost field is a key element in constructing Witten's cubic open string field theory. However, to date, the ghost sector of the string field theory has not received a great deal of attention. In this study, we address the BRST ghost on multiple $Dp$-branes, which carries non-Abelian indices and couples to a non-Ablelian gauge field. We found that the massless components of the BRST ghost field can play the role of the Faddeev-Popov ghost in the non-Alelian gauge field, such that the string field theory maintains the local non-Abelian gauge invariance.
First, we diagonalize the bc-ghost 3-string Neumann matrices using the technique described in hep-th/0304158. Their eigenvalues are in complete agreement with the previous authors. Second, we diagonalize the N-string gluing vertices for the bosonized ghost system. And third, we verify the descent and associativity relations for the combined bosonic matter+ghost gluing vertices. We find that in order for these relations to be true, the vertices must be normalized by the factor Z_N. Here Z_N is the partition function of the bosonic matter+ghost CFT on the gluing surface, which is the unit disc w…
In this paper, we recast the fermionic ghost sector of Witten's open bosonic string field theory in the language of noncommutative field theory. In particular, following the methods of hep-th/0202087, we find that in Siegel gauge Witten's star product roughly corresponds to a continuous tensor product of Clifford Algebras, and we formulate important operators of the theory in this language, notably the kinetic operator of vacuum string field theory and the BRST operator describing the vacuum of the unstable D-25 brane. We find that the BRST operator is singular in this formulation. We explore …
A class of string backgrounds associated with non semi-simple groups is obtained as a special large level limit of ordinary WZW models. The models have an integer Virasoro central charge and they include the background recently studied by Nappi and Witten.
We study a revised version of Witten's 2d black hole, in which the matter and (b,c) ghosts are mixed. The level of the coset model is still 9/4. We show that this model is equivalent to that of Mukhi and Vafa, in which the level of the coset model is taken as 3, and the stress tensor is improved. We argue that the exact metric in such a model is just the semi-classical one, quite different from the exact metric in Witten's black hole, being studied by Dijkgraaf, Verlinde and Verlinde. In addition, there appear ghost-related terms as a part of the background in the world sheet action.
We study NSR strings in the Nappi-Witten background, which is the Penrose limit of a certain NS5-brane supergravity solution. We solve the theory in the light-cone gauge, obtaining the spectrum, which is space-time supersymmetric. In light of the LST/NS5-brane duality, this spectrum should be in correspondence with the states of little string theory in the appropriate limit. A semiclassical analysis verifies that the relationship between energy and angular momentum, after a field redefinition, matches the known result for a flat background.
We examine string field algebra which is generated by star product in Witten's string field theory including ghost part. We perform calculations using oscillator representation consistently. We construct wedge like states in ghost part and investigate algebras among them. As a by-product we have obtained some solutions of vacuum string field theory. We also discuss some problems about identity state. We hope these calculations will be useful for further investigation of Witten type string field theory.
We propose a transformation between the off-shell field variables of Witten's open bosonic string field theory and the traditional lightcone string field theory of Kaku and Kikkawa, based on Mandelstam's interacting string picture. This is accomplished by deforming the Witten vertex into lightcone cubic and quartic vertices, followed by integrating out the ghost and lightcone oscillator excitations from the string field. Surprisingly, the last step does not alter the cubic and quartic interactions and does not generate effective vertices, and leads precisely to Kaku and Kikkawa's lightcone str…
We analyze the new states that have recently been discovered in 2D string theory by E. Witten and B. Zwiebach. Since the Liouville direction is uncompactified, we show that the deformations by the new ghost number two states generate equivalent classical solutions of the string fields. We argue that the new ghost number one states are responsible for generating transformations which relate such equivalent solutions. We also discuss the possible interpretation of higher ghost number states of those kinds.
We consider a diagonalization of Witten's star product for a ghost system of arbitrary background charge and Grassmann parity. To this end we use a bosonized formulation of such systems and a spectral analysis of Neumann matrices. We further identify a continuous Moyal product structure for a combined ghosts+matter system. The normalization of multiplication kernel is discussed.
We complete the construction of the Moyal star formulation of bosonic open string field theory (MSFT) by providing a detailed study of the fermionic ghost sector. In particular, as in the case of the matter sector, (1) we construct a map from Witten's star product to the Moyal product, (2) we propose a regularization scheme which is consistent with the matter sector and (3) as a check of the formalism, we derive the ghost Neumann coefficients algebraically directly from the Moyal product. The latter satisfy the Gross-Jevicki nonlinear relations even in the presence of the regulator, and when t…
A direct derivation of the string field theory action in the Witten's background independent open string theory for the case when ghosts and matter are decoupled is given and consequences are discussed.
We analyze the coset model $(E_2^c \ti E_2^c)/E_2^c$ and construct a class of exact string vacua which describe plane gravitational waves and their duals, generalizing the plane wave background found by Nappi and Witten. In particular, the vector gauging describes a two-parameter family of singular geometries with two isometries, which is dual to plane gravitational waves. In addition, there is a mixed vector-axial gauging which describes a one-parameter family of plane waves with five isometries. These two backgrounds are related by a duality transformation which generalizes the known axial-v…
We show that the degenerate positive-norm physical propagating fields of the open bosonic string can be gauged to the higher rank fields at the same mass level. As a result, their scattering amplitudes can be determined from those of the higher spin fields. This phenomenon arises from the existence of two types of zero-norm states with the same Young representations as those of the degenerate positive-norm states in the old covariant first quantized (OCFQ) spectrum. This is demonstrated by using the lowest order gauge transformation of Witten's string field theory (WSFT) up to the fourth massi…
We couple Chern-Simons gauge theory to 3-dimensional topological gravity with the aim of investigating its quantum topological invariance. We derive the relevant BRST rules and Batalin-Vilkovisky action. Standard BRST transformations of the gauge field are modified by terms involving both its anti-field and the super-ghost of topological gravity. Beyond the obvious couplings to the metric and the gravitino, the BV action includes hitherto neglected couplings to the super-ghost. We use this result to determine the topological anomalies of certain higher ghost deformations of SU(N) Chern-Simons …
We consider type IIB string in the two plane-wave backgrounds which may be interpreted as special limits of the AdS_3 x S^3 metric supported by either the NS-NS or R-R 3-form field. The NS-NS plane-wave string model is equivalent to a direct generalization of the Nappi-Witten model, with its spectrum being similar to that of strings in constant magnetic field. The R-R model can be solved in the light-cone gauge, where the Green-Schwarz action describes 4 massive and 4 massless copies of free bosons and fermions. We find the spectra of the two string models and study the asymptotic density of s…
We construct a boundary state for a class of analytic solutions in the Witten's open string field theory. The result is consistent with the property of the zero limit of a propagator's length, which was claimed in [19]. And we show that our boundary state becomes expected one for the perturbative vacuum solution and the tachyon vacuum solution. We also comment on possible presence of multi-brane solutions and ghost brane solutions from our boundary state.
The problem of accounting for the quantum degrees of freedom in passing from massive higher-spin potentials to massless ones and its inverse, the "fattening" of massless tensor potentials of helicity $\pm h$ to their massive $s = |h|$ counterparts, are solved - in a perfectly ghost-free approach - using "string-localized fields". This approach allows to overcome the Weinberg-Witten impediment against the existence of massless $|h| \geq 2$ energy-momentum tensors, and to qualitatively and quantitatively resolve the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity concerning, e.g., very light gravitons, i…
We elucidate some exact relations between light-cone and covariant string field theories on the basis of the homological perturbation lemma for $A_{\infty }$. The covariant string field splits into the light-cone string field and trivial excitations of BRST quartets: The latter generates the gauge symmetry and covariance. We first show that the reduction of gauge degrees can be performed by applying the lemma, which gives a refined version of the no-ghost theorem of covariant strings. Then, we demonstrate that after the reduction, gauge-fixed theory can be regarded as a kind of effective field…
New relations of correlation functions are found in topological string theory; one for each second cohomology class of the target space. They are close cousins of the Deligne-Dijkgraaf-Witten's puncture and dilaton equations. When combined with the dilaton equation and the ghost number conservation, the equation for the first chern class of the target space gives a constraint on the topological sum (over genera and (multi-)degrees) of partition functions. For the $\CP^1$ model, it coincides with the dilatation constraint which is derivable in the matrix model recently introduced by Eguchi and …
We present a number of D=4 bosonic and heterotic string solutions with a covariantly constant null Killing vector which, like the solution of Nappi and Witten (NW), correspond to (gauged) WZW models and thus have a direct conformal field theory interpretation. A class of exact plane wave solutions (which includes the NW solution) is constructed by `boosting' the twisted products of two D=2 `cosmological' or `black-hole' cosets of SL(2,R) and SU(2). We describe a general limiting procedure by which one can construct new solutions with a covariantly constant null Killing vector starting with kno…
The paper discusses the connection between S-duality and string-theoretic picture-changing formalism. The singular limit of the picture-changing transformation at zero momentum leads to the presence of the topological 5-form charge in the type IIB superalgebra which is attributed to the M5-brane. The topological charge defines the boundary D-brane state, which also is the analogue of the monopole part of the Olive-Witten's result in field theory. The correlation functions involving this non-perturbative state are computed. The non-perturbative D-brane states are associated with the ghost number …
We consider non-relativistic electrons, each of the same charge to mass ratio, moving in an external magnetic field with an interaction potential depending only on the mutual separations, possibly confined by a harmonic trapping potential. We show that the system admits a "relativity group" which is a one-parameter family of deformations of the standard Galilei group to the Newton-Hooke group which is a Wigner-Inonu contraction of the de Sitter group. This allows a group-theoretic interpretation of Kohn's theorem and related results. Larmor's Theorem is used to show that the one-parameter fami…
Here, a scenario is proposed, according to which a generic self-organized critical (SOC) system can be looked upon as a Witten-type topological field theory (W-TFT) with spontaneously broken Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry. One of the conditions for the SOC is the slow driving noise, which unambiguously suggests Stratonovich interpretation of the corresponding stochastic differential equation (SDE). This, in turn, necessitates the use of Parisi-Sourlas-Wu stochastic quantization procedure, which straightforwardly leads to a model with BRST-exact action, i.e., to a W-TFT. In the param…
The origin of the observed dark energy could be explained entirely within the standard model, with no new fields required. We show how the low-energy sector of the chiral QCD Lagrangian, once embedded in a non-trivial spacetime, gives rise to a cosmological vacuum energy density which can be can be presented entirely in terms of QCD parameters and the Hubble constant $H$ as $ρ_Λ\simeq H \cdot m_q\la\bar{q}q\ra /m_{η'} \sim (4.3\cdot 10^{-3} \text{eV})^4$. In this work we focus on the dynamics of the ghost fields that are essential ingredients of the aforementioned Lagrangian. In particular, we…
An overview of hadron spectroscopy obtained from an extension of superconformal field theory of de Alfaro, Fubini and Furlan, which originates from the supergauge transformation of Wess and Zumino and influenced on the string theory are preseted. The standard model of hadron dynamics is based on gauge theory. In the 4 dimensional ($4D$) QCD Lagrangian, the Faddeev-Popov ghost that appears to compensate unphysical degrees of freedom in internal fermion propagators can be regarded as the partner of a fermion. Donaldson formulated a $5D$ gauge theory. Fubini and Rabinovici formulated superconform…
It is shown that the recently introduced positivity and causality preserving string-local quantum field theory (SLFT) resolves most No-Go situations in higher spin problems. This includes in particular the Velo-Zwanziger causality problem which turns out to be related in an interesting way to the solution of zero mass Weinberg-Witten issue. In contrast to the indefinite metric and ghosts of gauge theory, SLFT uses only positivity-respecting physical degrees of freedom. The result is a fully Lorentz-covariant and causal string field theory in which light- or space-like linear strings transform …
