We derive a $1/c$-expansion for the single-particle density matrix of a strongly interacting time-dependent one-dimensional Bose gas, described by the Lieb-Liniger model ($c$ denotes the strength of the interaction). The formalism is derived by expanding Gaudin's Fermi-Bose mapping operator up to $1/c$-terms. We derive an efficient numerical algorithm for calculating the density matrix for time-dependent states in the strong coupling limit, which evolve from a family of initial conditions in the absence of an external potential. We have applied the formalism to study contraction dynamics of a localized wave packet upon which a parabolic phase is imprinted initially.
We provide a detailed presentation of the functional renormalisation group (FRG) approach for weakly-interacting Bose-Bose mixtures, including a complete discussion on the RG equations. To test this approach, we examine thermodynamic properties of balanced three-dimensional Bose-Bose gases at zero and finite temperatures and find a good agreement with related works. We also study ground-state energies of repulsive Bose polarons by examining mixtures in the limit of infinite population imbalance. Finally, we discuss future applications of the FRG to novel problems in Bose-Bose mixtures and rela…
We present a comprehensive discussion of the ground-state properties of dilute $D$-dimensional Bose gas interacting with a few static impurities. Assuming the short-ranged character of the boson-impurity interaction, we calculate the energy of three- and two-dimensional Bose systems with one and two impurities immersed.
A weakly interacting Bose gas on a simple cubic lattice is considered. We prove the existence of the standard or zero-mode Bose condensation at sufficiently low temperature. This result is valid for sufficiently small interaction potential and small values of chemical potential. Our method exploits infrared bound for the suitable two-point Bogolyubov's inner product. We do not use the reflection positivity or some expansion methods.
Developing Bogoliubov theory of weakly interacting Bose gas in uncompacted three-dimension space, quantum fluctuation energy of one component dilute gas of Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined to two parallel plates investigated at zero-temperature in grand canonical ensemble (GCE) with Neumann boundary condition (BC). The Casimir force considered in comparison to the one with Robin BC, Dirichlet BC and periodic BC.
A weakly interacting Bose gas with a single static impurity is studied in one dimension. The local spectral density is evaluated and an analytic expression valid for positive strengths of the impurity coupling to the bosons, at all distances and at all frequencies is obtained using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approximation.
The critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation essentially depends on internal properties of the system as well as on the geometry of a trapping potential. The peculiarities of defining the phase transition temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation for different systems are reviewed, including homogenous Bose gas, trapped Bose atoms, and bosons in optical lattices. The method of self-similar approximants, convenient for calculating critical temperature, is briefly delineated.
We study the low-temperature thermodynamics of weakly-interacting uniform liquids in one-dimensional attractive Bose-Bose mixtures.~The Bogoliubov approach is used to simultaneously describe quantum and thermal fluctuations. First, we investigate in detail two different thermal mechanisms driving the liquid-to-gas transition, the dynamical instability and the evaporation, and we draw the phase diagram. Then, we compute the main thermodynamic quantities of the liquid, such as the chemical potential, the Tan's contact, the adiabatic sound velocity and the specific heat at constant volume. The st…
We study the properties of an impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas, i.e., of a Bose polaron. In the perturbatively-tractable of limit weak impurity-boson interactions many of its properties are known to depend only on the scattering length. Here we demonstrate that for strong (unitary) impurity-boson interactions all static quasiproperties of a Bose polaron in a dilute Bose gas, such as its energy, its residue, its Tan's contact and the number of bosons trapped nearby the impurity, depend on the impurity-boson potential via a single parameter.
We investigate a bosonic quantum gas consisting of two interacting species in an optical lattice at zero and finite temperature. The equilibrium properties and dynamics of this system are obtained by means of the Gutzwiller mean-field method. In particular we model recent experiments where the ramp-up of the optical lattice occurs on a time scale comparable to the tunneling time of the bosons. We demonstrate the violation of adiabaticity of this process with respect to the many-body quantum states, and reproduce and explain the oscillations of the visibility as a function of ramp-up time, as s…
We study thermodynamic properties of weakly interacting Bose gases above the transition temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation in the framework of a thermodynamic perturbation theory. Cases of local and non-local interactions between particles are analyzed both analytically and numerically. We obtain and compare the temperature dependencies for the chemical potential, entropy, pressure, and specific heat to those of noninteracting gases. The results set reliable benchmarks for thermodynamic characteristics and their asymptotic behavior in dilute atomic and molecular Bose gases above the tra…
We study coherent dynamics of two interacting Bose-Bose droplets by means of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The relative motion of the droplets couples to the phases of their components. The dynamics can be understood in terms of the evolution of zero-energy modes recovering symmetries spontaneously broken by the mean-field solution. These are translational symmetry and two U(1) symmetries, associated with the phases of the droplets' two components. A phase-dependent interaction potential and double Josephson-junction equations are introduced to explain the observed variety of differe…
We study the effect of thermal and quantum fluctuations on the dynamical response of a one-dimensional strongly-interacting Bose gas in a tight atomic waveguide. We combine the Luttinger liquid theory at arbitrary interactions and the exact Bose-Fermi mapping in the Tonks-Girardeau-impenetrable-boson limit to obtain the dynamic structure factor of the strongly-interacting fluid at finite temperature. Then, we determine the drag force felt by a potential barrier moving along the fluid in the experimentally realistic situation of finite barrier width and temperature.
The flow of a uniform Bose gas at speeds greater than the Landau critical velocity, v_c, does not necessarily destroy superfluidity, but rather need only lead to a decrease of the superfluid mass density, ρ_s. Analyzing a weakly interacting Bose gas with a finite range interparticle interaction that leads to a Landau critical velocity at non-zero quasiparticle momentum, we explicitly construct the (non-uniform) condensate for fluid flow faster than v_c and calculate the accompanying decrease in ρ_s. We briefly comment on the relation of the physics to other problems in superfluids, e.g., solit…
We investigate the dimensionally induced phase transition from the normal to the Bose-Einstein-condensed phase for a weakly interacting Bose gas in an optical lattice. To this end we make use of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov theory, where we include numerically exact hopping energies and effective interaction strengths. At first we determine the critical chemical potential, where we find a much better agreement with recent experimental data than a pure Hartree-Fock treatment. This finding is in agreement with the dominant role of quantum fluctuations in lower dimensions, as they are explic…
We study the localization of collective pair excitations in weakly-interacting Bose superfluids in one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices. The localization diagram is first determined numerically. For intermediate interaction and quasiperiodic amplitude we find a sharp localization transition, with extended low-energy states and localized high-energy states. We then develop an analytical treatment, which allows us to quantitatively map the localization transition into that of an effective multiharmonic quasiperiodic system.
We study the localization properties of weakly interacting Bose gas in a quasiperiodic potential commonly known as Aubry-André model. Effect of interaction on localization is investigated by computing the `superfluid fraction' and `inverse participation ratio'. For interacting Bosons the inverse participation ratio increases very slowly after the localization transition due to `multisite localization' of the wave function. We also study the localization in Aubry-André model using an alternative approach of classical dynamical map, where the localization is manifested by chaotic classical dynam…
We analyze interacting one-dimensional bosons in the continuum, subject to a periodic sinusoidal potential of arbitrary depth. Variation of the lattice depth tunes the system from the Bose-Hubbard limit for deep lattices, through the sine-Gordon regime of weak lattices, to the complete absence of a lattice. Using the Bose-Fermi mapping between strongly interacting bosons and weakly interacting fermions, we derive the phase diagram in the parameter space of lattice depth and chemical potential. This extends previous knowledge from tight-binding (Bose-Hubbard) studies in a new direction which is…
We investigate multiparticle excitation effect on a collective density excitation as well as a single-particle excitation in a weakly interacting Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC). We find that although the weakly interacting BEC offers weak multiparticle excitation spectrum at low temperatures, this multiparticle excitation effect may not remain hidden, but emerges as bimodality in the density response function through the single-particle excitation. Identification of spectra in the BEC between the single-particle excitation and the density excitation is also assessed at nonzero temperatures, w…
We present a stochastic matter field equation for an interacting many-body Bose system in equilibrium at ultracold finite temperature. Moreover, the proposed equation can be used for non-equilibrium dynamics on phenomenological grounds. This stochastic differential equation is based on a field phase space representation reflecting the underlying canonical density operator (fixed particle number N). Remarkably, it allows for an efficient numerical implementation. We apply our canonical c-field method to interference experiments with quasi-one dimensional Bose gases. Crucial features of these in…
Using Landau's theory of two-fluid hydrodynamics, we investigate first and second sound propagating in a two-dimensional Bose gas. We study the temperature and interaction dependence of both sound modes and show that their behaviour exhibits a deep qualitative change as the gas evolves from the weakly interacting to the strongly interacting regime. Special emphasis is given to the jump of both sounds at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, caused by the discontinuity of the superfluid density. We find that the excitation of second sound through a density perturbation becomes weaker …
We show how density dependent gauge potentials can be induced in dilute gases of ultracold atoms using light-matter interactions. We study the effect of the resulting interacting gauge theory and show how it gives rise to novel topological states in the ultracold gas. We find in particular that the onset of persistent currents in a ring geometry is governed by a critical number of particles. The density-dependent gauge potential is also found to support chiral solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional ultracold Bose gas.
We investigate theoretically the phase diagram of a spin-orbit coupled Bose gas in two-dimensional harmonic traps. We show that discrete Landau levels develop at strong spin-orbit coupling. For a weakly interacting gas, quantum states with skyrmion lattice patterns emerge spontaneously and preserve either parity symmetry or combined parity-time-reversal symmetry. These phases can be readily observed by experimentally engineering spin-orbit coupling and interatomic interactions for a cloud of $^{87}$Rb atoms in a highly oblate trap.
We study one-dimensional strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures by both the exact Bethe-ansatz method and variational perturbation theory within the degenerate ground state subspace of the system in the infinitely repulsive limit. Based on the exact solution of the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi gas with equal boson-boson and boson-fermion interaction strengths, we demonstrate that the ground state energy is degenerate for different Bose-Fermi configurations and the degeneracy is lifted when the interaction deviates the infinitely interacting limit. We then show that the ground properties in the…
The low energy properties of a trapped bose gas split by a potential barrier are determined over the whole range of barrier heights. We derive a self-consistent two-mode model which reduces, for large $N$, to a Bogoliubov model for low barriers and to a Josephson model for any (asymmetric) double well potential, with explicitly calculated tunneling and pair interaction parameters. We compare the numerical results to analytical results that precisely specify the role of number squeezing and finite temperatures in the loss of coherence.
Atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) can be viewed as macroscopic objects where atoms form correlated atom clusters to all orders. Therefore, the presence of a BEC makes the direct use of the cluster-expansion approach --- lucrative e.g. in semiconductor quantum optics --- inefficient when solving the many-body kinetics of a strongly interacting Bose. An excitation picture is introduced with a nonunitary transformation that exclusively describes the system in terms of atom clusters within the normal component alone. The nontrivial properties of this transformation are systematically studied…
Using a multiple-image reconstruction method applied to a harmonically trapped Bose gas, we determine the equation of state of uniform matter across the critical transition point, within the local density approximation. Our experimental results provide the canonical description of pressure as a function of the specific volume, emphasizing the dramatic deviations from the ideal Bose gas behavior caused by interactions. They also provide clear evidence for the non-monotonic behavior with temperature of the chemical potential, which is a consequence of superfluidity. The measured thermodynamic qu…
We use a two-channel model to investigate an interacting Bose gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance within a field path integral approach. The ground state properties show strong deviation from that of a broad Feshbach resonance or a single channel interaction. The deviation can be interpreted by the strong energy dependence of two-body scattering length near a narrow Feshbach resonance. As the density increases, the chemical potential and energy per particle are found to saturate while the inverse compressibility and phonon velocity undergo a significant reduction. We also take Gaussian fluc…
We calculate the spatially resolved optical emission spectrum of a weakly interacting Bose gas of excitons confined in a three dimensional potential trap due to interband transitions involving weak direct and phonon mediated exciton-photon interactions. Applying the local density approximation, we show that for a non-condensed system the spatio-spectral lineshape of the direct process reflects directly the shape of the potential. The existence of a Bose-Einstein condensate changes the spectrum in a characteristic way so that it directly reflects the constant chemical potential of the excitons …
The shift in condensation temperature caused by interactions is studied up to second order in the s-wave scattering length in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a temperature-dependent three-dimensional generic potential. With no assumptions other than the mean-field approach and semiclassical approximations it is shown that the inclusion of a temperature-dependent trap improves the empirical values of the numerical parameters compared to those obtained in previous reports on the temperature shift.
By using a correlated many body method and using the realistic van der Waals potential we study several statistical measures like the specific heat, transition temperature and the condensate fraction of the interacting Bose gas trapped in an anharmonic potential. As the quadratic plus a quartic confinement makes the trap more tight, the transition temperature increases which makes more favourable condition to achieve Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) experimentally. BEC in 3D isotropic harmonic potential is also critically studied, the correction to the critical temperature due to finite number…
We study the frictional force exerted on the trapped, interacting 1D Bose gas under the influence of a moving random potential. Specifically we consider weak potentials generated by optical speckle patterns with finite correlation length. We show that repulsive interactions between bosons lead to a superfluid response and suppression of frictional force, which can inhibit the onset of Anderson localisation. We perform a quantitative analysis of the Landau instability based on the dynamic structure factor of the integrable Lieb-Liniger model and demonstrate the existence of effective mobility e…
An iterative scheme based on the kernel polynomial method is devised for the efficient computation of the one-body density matrix of weakly interacting Bose gases within Bogoliubov theory. This scheme is used to analyze the coherence properties of disordered bosons in one and two dimensions. In the one-dimensional geometry, we examine the quantum phase transition between superfluid and Bose glass at weak interactions, and we recover the scaling of the phase boundary that was characterized using a direct spectral approach by Fontanesi et al. [Phys. Rev. A 81, 053603 (2010)]. The kernel polynomi…
We have created a triply quantum degenerate mixture of bosonic $^{41}$K and two fermionic species $^{40}$K and $^6$Li. The boson is shown to be an efficient coolant for the two fermions, spurring hopes for the observation of fermionic superfluids with imbalanced masses. We observe multiple heteronuclear Feshbach resonances, in particular a wide s-wave resonance for the combination $^{41}$K-$^{40}$K, opening up studies of strongly interacting {\it isotopic} Bose-Fermi mixtures. For large imbalance, we enter the polaronic regime of dressed impurities immersed in a bosonic or fermionic bath.
We analyze the collective modes of a harmonically trapped, strongly interacting Bose gas in an optical lattice in the vicinity of the Mott insulator transition. For that aim we employ the dynamical Gutzwiller equations, by performing real-time evolution and by solving the equations in linear response. We find a strong dependence on the spatial dimension of the system: while in one dimension the frequency of the dipole mode vanishes at the Mott transition, in higher dimensions the dominant dipole mode is featureless and we find a signature only in the breathing mode. We discuss implications for…
We present an investigation of the fast decompression of a three-dimensional (3D) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at finite temperature using an engineered trajectory for the harmonic trapping potential. Taking advantage of the scaling invariance properties of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we exhibit a solution yielding a final state identical to that obtained through a perfectly adiabatic transformation, in a much shorter time. Experimentally, we perform a large trap decompression and displacement within a time comparable to the final radial trapping period. By simultaneously m…
We measure the zero-temperature equation of state of a homogeneous Bose gas of $^7$Li atoms by analyzing the \emph{in-situ} density distributions of trapped samples. For increasing repulsive interactions our data shows a clear departure from mean-field theory and provides a quantitative test of the many-body corrections first predicted in 1957 by Lee, Huang and Yang. We further probe the dynamic response of the Bose gas to a varying interaction strength and compare it to simple theoretical models. We deduce a lower bound for the value of the universal constant $ξ>0.44(8)$ that would characteri…
We study wave propagation in interacting Bose liquid, where the short range part of the interaction between atoms is of a hard core type, and its long range part scales with a distance as a power law. The cases of Coulomb, dipole-dipole and Van der Waals interaction are considered. We employ a hydrodynamic approach, based on the exact solution of Lieb-Liniger model, and study the evolution of a density pulse instantly released from a potential trap. We analyze semi-classical Euler and continuity equations and construct the corresponding Riemann invariants. We supplement our analysis with numer…
We study an ultracold atom-cavity coupling system, which had been implemented in experiment to display weak light nonlinearity [S. Gupta \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{99}, 213601 (2007)]. The model is described by a non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate contained in a Fabry-Pérot optical resonator, in which two incommensurate standing-wave modes are excited and thus form a quasiperiodic optical lattice potential for the atoms. Special emphasis are paid to the variation of atomic wavefunction induced by the cavity light field. We show that bistability between the atomic localized…
We theoretically investigate strong-coupling properties of a Bose-Fermi mixture. In the mass- and population-balanced case, two of the authors have shown that a strong hetero-pairing interaction in this mixture brings about coupling phenomena between Fermi atomic excitations and Bose atomic and composite molecular excitations, that appear as an anomalous multiple peak structure in the single-particle spectral weight (SW). [D. Kharga, {\it et. al.}, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 86}, 084301 (2017)]. In this paper, extending this previous work, we show that, although these many-body phenomena are sens…
We explore the dynamics of a Bose gas following its quench to a strongly interacting regime near a Feshbach resonance. Within a self-consistent Bogoliubov analysis we find that after the initial condensate-quasiparticle Rabi oscillations, at long time scales the gas is characterized by a nonequilibrium steady-state momentum distribution function, with depletion, condensate density and contact that deviate strongly from their corresponding equilibrium values. These are in a qualitative agreement with recent experiments on Rb85 by Makotyn, et al. Our analysis also suggests that for sufficiently …
We present a novel quantum stochastic evolution equation for a matter field describing the canonical state of a weakly interacting ultracold Bose gas. In the ideal gas limit our approach is exact. This numerically very stable equation suppresses high-energy fluctuations exponentially, which enables us to describe condensed and thermal atoms within the same formalism. We present applications to ground state occupation and fluctuations, density profile of ground state and thermal cloud, and ground state number statistics. Our main aim are spatial coherence properties which we investigate through…
A self-consistent field model for a mixture of Bose and Fermi particles is formulated. There is explored in detail the case of a delta-like interaction, for which the thermodynamic functions are obtained, and Bose-Einstein condensation of interacting particles in the presence of the admixture of fermions is studied. It is shown that the admixture of Fermi particles leads to reducing of the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation and smoothing of features of thermodynamic quantities at the transition temperature. As in the case of a pure Bose system, in the state of a mixture with condensate …
We study the expansion dynamics of a condensate in a strongly interacting Bose gas in the presence of an obstacle. Our focus is on the generation of shock waves after the Bose gas has passed the obstacle. The strongly interacting Bose gas is described in the slave-boson representation. A saddle-point approximation provides a nonlinear equation of motion for the macroscopic wave function, analogous to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation of a weakly interacting Bose gas but with different nonlinearity. We compare the results with the Gross-Pitaevskii dynamics of a weakly interacting Bose gas and find …
We describe a diabatic protocol to prepare a strongly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a regime where neither an adiabatic ramp nor a direct diabatic quench are desirable. This protocol is expected to achieve a nearly unit population transfer to the strongly-interacting ground state for realistic experimental parameters for $^{85}$Rb. The protocol matches the initial and final density profiles by modifying the trap along with the scattering length during the quench. The protocol should reveal several properties of the strongly-interacting Bose gas, and enable further investigation of be…
We describe the dynamical preparation of magnetic states in a strongly interacting two-component Bose gas in a harmonic trap. By mapping this system to an effective spin chain model, we obtain the dynamical spin densities and the fidelities for a few-body system. We show that the spatial profiles transit between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states as the intraspecies interaction parameter is slowly increased.
We study the one-dimensional Bose gas in spatially correlated disorder at zero temperature, using an extended density-phase Bogoliubov method. We analyze in particular the decay of the one-body density matrix and the behaviour of the Bogoliubov excitations across the phase boundary. We observe that the transition to the Bose glass phase is marked by a power-law divergence of the density of states at low energy. A measure of the localization length displays a power-law energy dependence in both regions, with the exponent equal to -1 at the boundary. We draw the phase diagram of the superfluid-i…
Grand-canonical fluctuations of Bose-Einstein condensates of light are accessible to state-of-the-art experiments [J. Schmitt et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 030401 (2014).]. We phenomenologically describe these fluctuations by using the grand-canonical ensemble for a weakly interacting Bose gas at thermal equilibrium. For a two-dimensional harmonic trap, we use two models for which the canonical partition functions of the weakly interacting Bose gas are given by exact recurrence relations. We find that the grand-canonical condensate fluctuations for weakly interacting Bose gases vanish at zero …
Two-time correlation functions of a system of Bose particles are studied. We find relation of zeros of the correlation functions with the Lee-Yang zeros of partition function of the system. Obtained relation gives the possibility to observe the Lee-Yang zeros experimentally. A particular case of Bose particles on two levels is examined and zeros of two-time correlation functions and Lee-Yang zeros of partition function of the system are analyzed.
Nonuniversal effects due to leading effective-range corrections are computed for the ground-state energy of the weakly-coupled repulsive Bose gas in two spatial dimensions. Using an effective field theory of contact interactions, these corrections are computed first by considering fluctuations around the mean-field free energy of a system of interacting bosons. This result is then confirmed by an exact calculation in which the energy of a finite number of bosons interacting in a square with period boundary conditions is computed and the thermodynamic limit is explicitly taken.
We present a rigorous analysis of the generalized Landau-Zener problem for the two-level interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that the dynamics of the system is accurately, in detail, described by a two-term variational ansatz that is valid for the whole time domain and is applicable for any set of involved parameters. Applying an exact third order nonlinear differential equation we construct an advanced fifth order polynomial equation for the final transition probability serving as a highly accurate generalized Landau-Zener formula.
We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped circumferentially on a ring, and which is governed by an interacting gauge theory. We show that the associated density-dependent gauge potential and concomitant current nonlinearity permits a ground state in the form of a rotating chiral bright soliton. This chiral soliton is constrained to move in one direction by virtue of the current nonlinearity, and represents a time crystal in the same vein as Wilczek's original proposal.
We explore Loschmidt echo in two regimes of one-dimensional (1D) interacting Bose gases: the strongly interacting Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime, and the weakly-interacting mean-field regime. We find that the Loschmidt echo of a TG gas decays as a Gaussian when small perturbations are added to the Hamiltonian (the exponent is proportional to the number of particles and the magnitude of a small perturbation squared). In the mean-field regime the Loschmidt echo decays faster for larger interparticle interactions (nonlinearity), and it shows richer behavior than the TG Loschmidt echo dynamics, with …
We show a method to accelerate quantum adiabatic transport of identical spinless particles interacting with each other by developing the preceding fast-forward scaling theory formed for one-particle systems [Masuda and Nakamura, {\it Proc. R. Soc.} A {\bf 466}, 1135 (2010)]. We derive a driving potential which accelerates adiabatic dynamics of quantum systems composed of identical particles in order to obtain the final adiabatic states in any desired short time. We also exhibit an ideal rapid manipulation of dilute Bose gas in the ground state without energy excitation by using the fast-forwar…
We report on local measurements of atom number fluctuations in slices of a single 1D Bose gas with repulsive interactions. For weakly interacting gases, the fluctuations are super-Poissonian at intermediate atomic densities and become sub-Poissonian at high densities once the gas enters into the quantum quasi-condensate regime. At stronger interactions, when approaching the fermionization regime, we no longer observe super-Poissonian statistics; the fluctuations go from Poissonian to sub-Poissonian as the density is increased, as those in a Fermi gas.
When an impurity is immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate, impurity-boson interactions are expected to dress the impurity into a quasiparticle, the Bose polaron. We superimpose an ultracold atomic gas of $^{87}$Rb with a much lower density gas of fermionic $^{40}$K impurities. Through the use of a Feshbach resonance and RF spectroscopy, we characterize the energy, spectral width and lifetime of the resultant polaron on both the attractive and the repulsive branches in the strongly interacting regime. The width of the polaron in the attractive branch is narrow compared to its binding energy, e…
In three dimensions, non-interacting bosons undergo Bose-Einstein condensation at a critical temperature, $T_{c}$, which is slightly shifted by $ΔT_{\mathrm{c}}$, if the particles interact. We calculate the excitation spectrum of interacting Bose-systems, \sup{4}He and \sup{87}Rb, and show that a roton minimum emerges in the spectrum above a threshold value of the gas parameter. We provide a general theoretical argument for why the roton minimum and the maximal upward critical temperature shift are related. We also suggest two experimental avenues to observe rotons in condensates. These result…
We investigate the disorder effect on coherent fraction and the quantum phase transition of ultracold dilute Bose gases trapped in disordered optical lattices. Within the framework of Bogoliubov theory, an analytical expression for the particle density is derived and the dependence of coherent fraction on disorder strength as well as on lattice depth is discussed. In weak disorder regime, we find a decreased sensitivity of coherent fraction to disorder with the increase of on-site interaction strength. For strong disorder, the quantum phase boundary between superfluid phase and Bose glass phas…
