In the BCS theory of superconductivity, one assumes that all Cooper pairs have the same center of mass momentum. This is indeed enforced by self consistency, if the pairing interaction is momentum independent. Here, we show that for an attractive nearest neighbor interaction, this is different. In this case, stable solutions with pairs with momenta q and -q coexist and, for a sufficiently strong interaction, one of these states becomes the groundstate of the superconductor. This finite-momentum pairing state is accompanied by a charge order with wave vector 2q. For a weak pairing interaction, the groundstate is a d-wave superconductor.
The superconducting state in uranium compounds UGe2, URhGe and UCoGe is formed at temperatures far below the Curie temperature pointing on nonconventional nature of superconductivity in these materials - namely the superconductivity with triplet pairing. The emergence of superconductivity is accompanied by the slight magnetization expulsion typical for the type-II superconductors. Following classic Abrikosov paper I develop the theory of type-II superconductivity in application to two-band ferromagnetic metal with equal spin triplet pairing.
The origin of interband electron pairing responsible for enhancing superconductivity and the factors controlling its strength were examined. We show that the interband electron pairing is a natural consequence of breaking down the Born-Oppenheimer approximation during the electron-phonon interactions. Its strength is determined by the pair-state excitations around the Fermi surfaces that take place to form a superconducting state. Fermi surfaces favorable for the pairing were found and its implications were discussed.
Starting from the linearized BdG-equation we make the simple observation that pairing can occur between particles with total momenta different from zero, e.g., with equal momentum and opposite spin, in cases of an effective interaction acting in the center-of-mass coordinates.
A model interaction is proposed in which pairing is caused by a non-local Jahn-Teller (JT) -like instability due to the coupling between planar O states and knot equal to 0 phonons. Apart from pairing, the interaction is found to naturally allow metallic stripe formation. The consequences of the model for superconductivity in the cuprates are discussed. The model is shown to be consistent with numerous sets of experimental data in quite some detail.
Pairing symmetry in the superconducting state coexisting with antiferromagnetic order is studied based on a microscopic theory. We calculate the linearized Eliashberg's equation within the random phase approximation in the Hubbard model with a staggered field. We find that odd-frequency spin-triplet (equal-spin) s-wave pairing state can be realized. This result contradicts a naive expectation that antiferromagnetic order induces antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation and favors spin-singlet d-wave pairing as in the standard strongly correlated systems.
A generalization of the Cooper pairing mechanism is proposed which allows for a triplet state of lower energy. This is achieved by incorporating spin into the canonical commutation relations and by modifying the $δ$ potential contact interaction. The gap equation contain as solutions both singlet and triplet states. It is shown that the triplet state is lower in energy than the singlet state which may explain the spin-triplet superconductivity observed in heavy fermion compound UPt3 and in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.
The search for superconductivity with higher transition temperature ($T_C$) has long been a challenge in research efforts ever since its first discovery in 1911. The effort has led to the discovery of various kinds of superconductors and progress in the understanding of this intriguing phenomenon. The increase of $T_C$ has also evolved; however, the dream of realizing room-temperature superconductivity is far from reality. For superconductivity to emerge, the effective quasiparticle interaction should overcome the repulsive Coulomb interaction. This can be realized via lattice or spin degrees …
High-Tc superconductivity in layered cuprates is described in a BCS-BEC formalism with linearly-dispersive s- and d-wave Cooper pairs moving in quasi-2D finite-width layers about the CuO_2 planes. This yields a closed formula for Tc determined by the layer width, the Debye frequency, the pairing energy, and the in-plane penetration depth. The new formula reasonably reproduces empirical values of superconducting Tc's for seven different compounds among the LSCO, YBCO, BSCCO and TBCCO layered cuprates.
We study superconductivity in spin-orbit-coupled systems in the vicinity of inversion symmetry breaking. We find that due to the presence of spin-orbit coupling, fluctuations of the incipient parity-breaking order generate an attractive pairing interaction in an odd-parity pairing channel, which competes with the s-wave pairing. We show that applying a Zeeman field suppresses the s-wave pairing and promotes the odd-parity superconducting state. Our work provides a new mechanism for odd-parity pairing and opens a route to novel topological superconductivity.
In our recent paper entitled "Pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity: Experimental constraints" (to be published in Physica Scripta, arXiv:1012.2368), we review some crucial experiments that place strong constraints on the microscopic pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates. In particular, we show that phonons rather than spin-fluctuation play a predominant role in the microscopic pairing mechanism. We further show that the intrinsic pairing symmetry in the bulk is not d-wave, but extended s-wave (having eight line nodes) in hole-doped cuprates and …

By means of first-principles calculations, we predict two new types of partially hydrogenated graphene systems: C$_{6}$H$_{1}$ and C$_{6}$H$_{5}$, which are shown to be ferromagnetic (FM) semimetal and FM narrow-gap semiconductor, respectively. When properly doped, the Fermi surface of the two systems consists of an electron pocket or six hole patches in the first Brillouin zone with completely spin-polarized charge carries. If superconductivity exists in these systems, the stable pairing symmetries are shown to be $p+ip$ for electron doped case, and anisotropic $p+ip$ for hole doped case. The…
We consider a model for superconductivity in a two-band superconductor, having an anisotropic electronic structure made of two partially overlapping bands with a first hole-like and a second electron-like fermi surface. In this pairing scenario, driven by the interplay between interband $V_{i,j}$ and intraband $V_{i,i}$ pairing terms, we have solved the two gap equations at the critical temperature $T = T_c$ and calculate $T_c$ and the chemical potential $μ$ as a function of the number of carriers $n$ for various values of pairing interactions, $V_{1,1}$, $V_{2,2}$, and $V_{1,2}$. The results …
Recent experiments indicate that superconductivity in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ intercalated with Cu, Nb or Sr is nematic with rotational symmetry breaking. Motivated by this observation, we present a model study of nematic and chiral superconductivity induced by odd-parity fluctuations. We show that odd-parity fluctuations in the two-component $E_u$ representation of $D_{3d}$ crystal point group can generate attractive interaction in both the even-parity $s$-wave and odd-parity $E_u$ pairing channels, but repulsive interaction in other odd-parity pairing channels. Coulomb repulsion can suppress $s$-wave p…
We study the pairing symmetry of a doped Kane-Mele model on a honeycomb lattice with on-site Coulomb interaction. The pairing instability of Cooper pair is calculated based on the linearized Eliashberg equation within the random phase approximation (RPA). When the magnitude of the spin-orbit coupling is weak, even-frequency spin-singlet even-parity (ESE) pairing is dominant. On the other hand, with the increase of the spin-orbit coupling, we show that the even-frequency spin-triplet odd-parity (ETO) f-wave pairing exceeds ESE one. ETO f-wave pairing is supported by the longitudinal spin fluctu…
We show that the phase information contained in coherent phonon oscillations generated by a laser pulse in a multi- orbital superconductor can be used as an experimental tool to probe super- conductivity and pairing symmetries. The phase difference between the normal and superconducting states is proportional to the superconducting order parameter just below the superconducting transition temperature, Tc. It also exhibits different behaviors for superconducting states with different pairing symmetries. In particular, if there is an orbital-dependent internal sign change state, the phase differ…
Cooper's one pair problem is investigated for a 2D lattice in the background of both passive and active Fermi sea in a weakly correlated environment. Boson exchange mechanisms involving excitons as well as phonons are invoked for pairing in the s- wave channel. The important quantities calculated are pairing energy and coherence length as functions of bosonic energy, attracted coupling constant and band filling factor. Comparison of our theoretical results with those from experiments on overdoped cuprate superconductors and other type of theoretical calculations show electronic mechanism to be…
We propose that screened pairing interactions mediated by phonons could give rise to a spin triplet superconductivity in ferromagnetic compounds such as UGe_2. It is pointed out that the pairing interactions include anisotropic components such as those of p, d, f-waves in addition to dominant s-wave component due to the momentum dependence. Since the ferromagnetic long-range order coexists, there is a large splitting of the Fermi surfaces of up and down spin electrons, which suppresses singlet pairing. Therefore, triplet pairing occurs at last due to the sub-dominant anisotropic interactions, …
Pressure-induced superconductivity in a spin-ladder cuprate Sr$_2$Ca$_{12}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ has not been studied on a microscopic level so far although the superconductivity was already discovered in 1996. We have improved high-pressure technique with using a large high-quality crystal, and succeeded in studying the superconductivity using $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We found that anomalous metallic state reflecting the spin-ladder structure is realized and the superconductivity possesses a s-wavelike character in the meaning that a finite gap exists in the quasi-particle exci…
Electron pairing is central to modern concepts of superconductivity, and provides a basis for the ubiquitous presence of h/2e in the theory and phenomenology. However, the lack of a consistent real-space picture of phonon-mediated pairing suggests that the pairing interpretation may be incomplete or even misleading. Alternatively, the present picture refers back to an old proposal by Frohlich, whereby superconductivity is based on an induced electron charge density wave coupled to a one-dimensional static lattice distortion. In the new picture, dynamic three-dimensional charge-density waves co…
Recently, superconductivity with spontaneous time-reversal or parity symmetry breaking is attracting much attention owing to its exotic properties, such as nontrivial topology and nonreciprocal transport. Particularly fascinating phenomena are expected when the time-reversal and parity symmetry are simultaneously broken. This work shows that time-reversal symmetry-breaking mixed-parity superconducting states generally exhibit an unusual asymmetric Bogoliubov spectrum due to nonunitary interband pairing. For generic two-band models, we derive the necessary conditions for the asymmetric Bogoliub…
We review all symmetry-allowed spin-singlet and spin-triplet superconducting (SC) order parameters in graphene ($s$-wave, $d$-wave, $p$-wave, and $f$-wave) generated by generic onsite, nearest-neighbor (NN), and next-to-nearest-neighbor (NNN) pairing interactions in a tight-binding model. For each pairing channel, we calculate both the band structure and the dependence of the density of states on energy, chemical potential, and on the pairing strength. In particular, we distinguish between nodal superconducting states and fully gapped states and study the dependence of gap closing points on th…
We have calculated the tunneling conductance of a superconductor-insulator-superconductor junction based on the polaron-bipolaron theory of superconductivity. The predicted incoherent hump features are in quantitative agreement with tunneling spectra of optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y and Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+y. We further show that angle-resolved photoemission spectra of underdoped cuprates are consistent with the Bose-Einstein condensation of inter-site bipolarons and that the superconducting gap symmetry is d-wave, which is determined by the anomalous kinetic process rather than by the pairing i…
How the superconductivity in unconventional superconductors emerges from the diverse mother normal states is still a big puzzle. Whatever the mother normal states are the superconductivity is {\em normal} with BCS-like behaviours of the paired quasiparticles in condensation. To reconcile the diverse mother normal states and the normal superconductivity in unconventional superconductors, we revisit a proposal that the emergence of the low-energy coherent parts of the physical electrons, which survive from the interaction correlations, is an essential prerequisite for superconductivity. The supe…
Striped high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors such as La$_{2-y-x}$Nd$_{y}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_4$ near $x=1/8$ show a fascinating competition between spin and charge order and superconductivity. A theory for these systems therefore has to capture both the spin correlations of an antiferromagnet and the pair correlations of a superconductor. For this purpose we present here an effective Hartree-Fock theory incorporating both electron pairing with finite center-of-mass momentum and antiferromagnetism. We show that this theory reproduces the key experimental features such as the fo…
Results are presented for the temperature and frequency dependence of the real and imaginary parts of the diagonal self energy for a d-wave superconductor. An Eliashberg analysis, which has been successful in recent fitting of superconductor-insulator-superconductor tunnel junction conductances for BiSrCaCuO (Bi-2212), is extended to finite temperatures. The effect of the temperature dependence of the 40 meV spin resonance mode, measured in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) in Bi-2212, on the finite temperature self energies is investigated.
We study time-reversal-invariant topological superconductivity in topological insulator (TI) thin films including both intra- and inter-surface pairing. We find a nontrivial topology for multiple different configurations. For intra-surface pairing a $π$-phase difference between the intra-surface pairing states is required. We show that in this case the resulting topological phase is highly tunable by both an applied electric field and varied chemical potential. For spin-singlet inter-surface pairing, a sign-changing tunnel coupling present in many TI thin films is needed, and again, the topolo…
We propose a model for a spatially modulated collective state of superconducting cuprates in which the electronic properties vary locally in space. In this model the regions of higher hole density (called stripes) are described as Luttinger liquids and the regions of lower density (antiferromagnetic ladders) as an interacting bosonic gas of d$_{x^2-y^2}$ hole pairs. We show that the transition to the superconducting state is topological and driven by decay processes among these elementary excitations in the presence of vibrations.
We study theoretically the effects of random nonmagnetic impurities on the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ in a two-band superconductor characterized by an equal-time s-wave interband pairing order parameter. The Fermi-Dirac statistics of electrons allows a spin-triplet s-wave pairing order as well as a spin-singlet s-wave order parameter due to the two-band degree of freedom. In a spin-singlet superconductor, $T_c$ is insensitive to the impurity concentration when we estimate the self-energy due to the random impurity potential within the Born approximation. On the other hand in …
We investigate general structure of Landau free energy for stabilizing a novel superconducting state with both even-frequency and odd-frequency components in gap function. On the basis of the Luttinger-Ward functional, we elucidate an emergent mixing between different "parities" in time. The simplest case of the conventional s-wave singlet mixed with the odd-frequency triplet state under broken time-reversal symmetry is examined to demonstrate the anomalous structure of the free-energy functional. The induced odd-frequency component alters behaviors of physical quantities from those obtained b…
Two dimensional electron systems at oxide interfaces are often influenced by a Rashba type spin- orbit coupling (SOC), which is tunable by a transverse electric field. Ferromagnetism at the interface can simultaneously induce strong local magnetic fields. This combination of SOC and magnetism leads to asymmetric two-sheeted Fermi surfaces, on which either intra- or inter-band pairing is favored. The superconducting order parameters are derived within a microscopic pairing model realizing both, the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor with inter-band pairing in the regime of dominating magn…
An experimental phase diagram of the field-induced superconductivity in the lambda-(BETS)_2FeCl_4 compound is theoretically reproduced by a combination of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state and the Jaccarino-Peter mechanism. Semi-quantitative agreement is obtained in the presence of a very weak subdominant triplet pairing interaction between electrons with antiparallel spins, in addition to a dominant singlet pairing interaction. An order-parameter mixing effect enhances the FFLO state, and plays an essential role in the semi-quantitative agreement. As a possible origin of the s…
Layered kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) exhibit diverse correlated electron phenomena. It includes charge density wave formation and superconductivity the pairing symmetry of which, however, is controversial due to contradictory experimental evidence. Through calculations based on real-space lattice models at the mean-field level, we investigate the vortex and surface spectra of all competitive pairing propensities suggested for AV3Sb5 from a weak coupling analysis of unconventional superconductivity. Chiral p-wave pairing emerges as the only option to host Majorana bound states in the vort…
We investigate the competition between the electron-vibron interaction (interaction with the Jahn-Teller phonons) and the Coulomb repulsion in a system with local pairing of electrons on the triply degenerate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The electron-vibron interaction radically changes conductivity and magnetic properties of alkali-doped fullerides AnC60, which should be antiferromagnetic Mott insulators: we have found that materials with n=1,2 and A=K,Rb are conductors but not superconductors; n=3 and A=K,Rb are conductors (superconductors at low temperatures), but with A=Cs a…
Superconductivity (SC) occurring at low densities of mobile electrons is still a mystery since the standard theories do not apply in this regime. We address this problem by using a microscopic model for ferroelectric (FE) modes, which mediate an effective attraction between electrons. When the dispersion of modes, around zero momentum, is steep, forward scattering is the main pairing process and the self-consistent equation for the gap function can be solved analytically. The solutions exhibit unique features: Different momentum components of the gap function are decoupled, and at the critical…
The nature of the pairing states of superconducting LaNiC$_2$ and LaNiGa$_2$ has to date remained a puzzling question. Broken time reversal symmetry has been observed in both compounds and a group theoretical analysis implies a non-unitary triplet pairing state. However all the allowed non-unitary triplet states have nodal gap functions but most thermodynamic and NMR measurements indicate fully gapped superconductivity in LaNiC$_2$. Here we probe the gap symmetry of LaNiGa$_2$ by measuring the London penetration depth, specific heat and upper critical field. These measurements demonstrate two-…
The BCS theory of superconductivity named electron-phonon interaction as a glue that overcomes Coulomb repulsion and binds fermions into pairs which then condense and superconduct. We review recent and not so recent works aiming to understand whether a nominally repulsive Coulomb interaction can by itself give rise to a superconductivity. We first discuss a generic scenario of the pairing by electron-electron interaction, put forward by Kohn and Luttinger back in 1965, and then turn to modern studies of the electronic mechanism of superconductivity in the lattice models for the cuprates, the F…
We investigate the competition between the electron-vibron interaction (interaction with the Jahn-Teller phonons) and the Coulomb repulsion in a system with the local pairing of electrons on the 3-fold degenerate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The el.-vib. interaction and the local pairing radically change conductivity and magnetic properties of alkali-doped fullerides $\texttt{A}_{n}\texttt{C}_{60}$, which would have to be antiferromagnetic Mott insulators: we have shown that materials with $n=1,5$ and $\texttt{A}=\texttt{K},\texttt{Rb}$ are conductors but not superconductors; $n…
Anisotropic pairing interactions mediated by phonons are examined in layer systems. It is shown that the screening effects become weaker when the layer spacing increases. Then the anisotropic components of the pairing interactions increase with the screening length since the momentum dependence changes. As a result, various types of anisotropic superconductivity occur depending on the parameter region. For example, p-wave superconductivity occurs when the short-range part of Coulomb repulsion is strong and the layer spacing is large. Two kinds of inter-layer pairing may occur when the layer sp…
We revisit the pairing symmetry competition in quasi-one-dimensional systems. We show that spin-triplet s-wave pairing, where the pair is formed by electrons with different times and has an odd-frequency symmetry, can be realized in systems with strong one-dimensionality when the strength of charge fluctuation dominates over spin fluctuation. The present study provides a novel microscopic mechanism for this exotic pairing originally proposed by Berezinskii in 1974.
We investigate superconductivity that may exist in the doped BaCoSO, a multi-orbital Mott insulator with a strong antiferromagnetic ground state. The superconductivity is studied in both t-J type and Hubbard type multi-orbital models by mean field approach and random phase approximation (RPA) analysis. Even if there is no C4 rotational symmetry, it is found that the system still carries a d-wave like pairing symmetry state with gapless nodes and sign changed superconducting order parameters on Fermi surfaces. The results are largely doping insensitive. In this superconducting state, the three …
We present a self-consistent approach to deal with the pairing-fluctuation effects in quasi-two-dimensional superconducting systems. Besides the Cooper pairs in the Bose-Einstein condensate, there are pairs occupying the excited states, which results in the predominant fluctuations. The low-lying excited states are the collective modes. On the basis of ladder-diagram approximation, we treat the single particles and the pairs on an equal-footing manner. The Green's function of single particles is obtained as an analytic solution to a cubic equation. The bosonic degrees of freedom are relevant t…
The evidence for the key role of the $σ$ bands in the electronic properties of MgB$_2$ points to the possibility of nonadiabatic effects in the superconductivity of these materials. These are governed by the small value of the Fermi energy due to the vicinity of the hole doping level to the top of the $σ$ bands. We show that the nonadiabatic theory leads to a coherent interpretation of $T_c = 39$ K and the boron isotope coefficient $α_{\rm B} = 0.30$ without invoking very large couplings and it naturally explains the role of the disorder on $T_c$. It also leads to various specific predictions …
To explore whether a flat-band system can accommodate superconductivity, we consider repulsively interacting fermions on the diamond chain, a simplest quasi-one-dimensional system that contains a flat band. Exact diagonalization and the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) are used to show that we have a significant binding energy of a Cooper pair with a long-tailed pair-pair correlation in real space when the total band filling is slightly below $1/3$, where the dispersive band interacts with the flat band that is empty but close to $E_F$. Pairs selectively formed across the outer site…
The model of local electron pairs and itinerant fermions coupled via charge exchange mechanism, which mutually induces superconductivity in both subsystems is studied for anisotropic pairing symmetry. The phase diagram is presented and the phase fluctuations effects are analyzed within the Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario.
Bulk FeSe is a special iron-based material in which superconductivity emerges inside a well-developed nematic phase. We present a microscopic model for this nematic superconducting state, which takes into account the mixing between $s-$wave and $d-$wave pairing channels and the changes in the orbital spectral weight promoted by the sign-changing nematic order parameter. We show that nematicity gives rise to a $\cos2θ$ variation of the pairing gap on the hole pocket that agrees with ARPES and STM data for experimentally-extracted Fermi surface parameters. We further argue that, in BCS theory, $…
Superconductive properties of the two-leg ladder compounds are studied theoretically. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations are considered because of the good nesting of the Fermi surfaces. The attractive interaction which is most likely due to the electron-phonon coupling is also taken into account. Under this circumstance, it is shown that the superconductivity has two sets of spin-triplet pairings. The gaps for both pairings have no node.
We point out that ferromagnetic superconductors with triplet pairing and strong spin-orbit coupling are even in the simplest case at least two-band superconductors. The Gor'kov type formalism for such superconductors is developed and the Ginzburg-Landau equations are derived. The dependence of the critical temperature on the concentration of ordinary point-like impurities is found. Its nonuniversality could serve as a qualitative measure of the two-band character of ferromagnetic superconductors. The problem of the upper critical field determination is also discussed.
