In this paper, we establish existence of global subsonic and subsonic-sonic flows through infinitely long axially symmetric nozzles by combining variational method, various elliptic estimates and a compensated compactness method. More precisely, it is shown that there exist global subsonic flows in nozzles for incoming mass flux less than a critical value; moreover, uniformly subsonic flows always approach to uniform flows at far fields when nozzle boundaries tend to be flat at far fields, and flow angles for axially symmetric flows are uniformly bounded away from $π/2$; finally, when the incoming mass flux tends to the critical value, subsonic-sonic flows exist globally in nozzles in the weak sense by using angle estimate in conjunction with a compensated compactness framework.
In this paper, we study the global subsonic irrotational flows in a multi-dimensional ($n\geq 2$) infinitely long nozzle with variable cross sections. The flow is described by the inviscid potential equation, which is a second order quasilinear elliptic equation when the flow is subsonic. First, we prove the existence of the global uniformly subsonic flow in a general infinitely long nozzle for arbitrary dimension for sufficiently small incoming mass flux and obtain the uniqueness of the global uniformly subsonic flow. Furthermore, we show that there exists a critical value of the incoming mas…
In this paper, we study the global existence of steady subsonic Euler flows through infinitely long nozzles which are periodic in $x_1$ direction with the period $L$. It is shown that when the variation of Bernoulli function at some given section is small and mass flux is in a suitable regime, there exists a unique global subsonic flow in the nozzle. Furthermore, the flow is also periodic in $x_1$ direction with the period $L$. If, in particular, the Bernoulli function is a constant, we also get the existence of subsonic-sonic flows when the mass flux takes the critical value.
In this paper, we investigate two dimensional subsonic and subsonic-sonic spiral flows outside a porous body. The existence and uniqueness of the subsonic spiral flow are obtained via variational formulation. The optimal decay rate at far fields is also derived by the Kelvin's transformation and some elliptic estimates. By extracting spiral subsonic solutions as the approximate sequences, we obtain the spiral subsonic-sonic limit solution. The main ingredients of our analysis are methods of calculus of variations, the theory of second-order quasilinear equations and the compactness framework.
In this paper, we study irrotational subsonic and subsonic-sonic flows with general conservative forces in the exterior domains. The conservative forces indicate the new Bernoulli law naturally. For the subsonic case, we introduce a modified cut-off system depending on the conservative forces which needs the varied Bers skill, and construct the solution by the new variational formula. Moreover, comparing with previous results, our result extends the pressure-density relation to the general case. Afterwards we obtain the subsonic-sonic limit solution by taking the extract subsonic solutions as …
In this paper, the well-posedness and optimal convergence rates of subsonic irrotational flows through a three dimensional infinitely long nozzle with a smooth obstacle inside are established. More precisely, the global existence and uniqueness of the uniformly subsonic flow are obtained via variational formulation as long as the incoming mass flux is less than a critical value. Furthermore, with the aid of delicate choice of weight functions, we prove the optimal convergence rates of the flow at far fields via weighted energy estimates and Nash-Moser iteration.
This paper concerns smooth transonic flows of Meyer type in finite de Laval nozzles, which are governed by an equation of mixed type with degeneracy and singularity at the sonic state. First we study the properties of sonic curves. For any $C^2$ transonic flow of Meyer type, the set of exceptional points is shown to be a closed line segment (may be empty or only one point). Furthermore, it is proved that a flow with nonexceptional points is unstable for a $C^1$ small perturbation in the shape of the nozzle. Then we seek smooth transonic flows of Meyer type which satisfy physical boundary condi…
In this paper, a compensated compactness framework is established for sonic-subsonic approximate solutions to the $n$-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow that may contain stagnation points. This compactness framework holds provided that the approximate solutions are uniformly bounded and satisfy $H^{-1}_{loc}(Ω)$ compactness conditions. As illustration, we show the existence of sonic-subsonic weak solution to n-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow past obstacles or through an infinitely long nozzle. This is the first result concern…
In this paper, we study the existence and uniqueness of three dimensional steady Euler flows in rectangular nozzles when prescribing normal component of momentum at both the entrance and exit. If, in addition, the normal component of the voriticity and the variation of Bernoulli's function at the exit are both zero, then there exists a unique subsonic potential flow when the magnitude of the normal component of the momentum is less than a critical number. As the magnitude of the normal component of the momentum approaches the critical number, the associated flows converge to a subsonic-sonic f…
In this paper, we prove the existence and stability of subsonic flows for steady full Euler-Poisson system in a two dimensional nozzle of finite length when imposing the electric potential difference on non-insulated boundary from a fixed point at the entrance, and prescribing the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. The Euler-Poisson system for subsonic flow is a hyperbolic-elliptic coupled nonlinear system. One of the crucial ingredient of this work is the combination of Helmholtz decomposition for the velocity field and stream function formulation together. In terms of the Helmholtz decompos…
In this paper, we study the global existence of steady subsonic Euler flows through infinitely long nozzles without the assumption of irrotationality. It is shown that when the variation of Bernoulli's function in the upstream is sufficiently small and mass flux is in a suitable regime with an upper critical value, then there exists a unique global subsonic solution in a suitable class for a general variable nozzle. One of the main difficulties for the general steady Euler flows, the governing equations are a mixed elliptic-hyperbolic system even for uniformly subsonic flows. A key point in ou…
For the stationary hydrodynamic model for semiconductors with sonic boundary, represented by Euler-Poisson equations, it possesses the various physical solutions including interior subsonic solutions/interior supersonic solutions/shock transonic solutions/$C^1$-smooth transonic solutions. However, the structural stability for these physical solutions is challenging and has remained open as we know. In this paper, we investigate the structural stability of interior subsonic solutions when the doping profiles are restricted in the subsonic region. The main result is proved by using the local (we…
A compactness framework is established for approximate solutions to subsonic-sonic flows governed by the steady full Euler equations for compressible fluids in arbitrary dimension. The existing compactness frameworks for the two-dimensional irrotational case do not directly apply for the steady full Euler equations in higher dimensions. The new compactness framework we develop applies for both non-homentropic and rotational flows. One of our main observations is that the compactness can be achieved by using only natural weak estimates for the mass balance and the vorticity, along with the Bern…
We are concerned with global steady subsonic flows through general infinitely long nozzles for the full Euler equations. The problem is formulated as a boundary value problem in the unbounded domain for a nonlinear elliptic equation of second order in terms of the stream function. It is established that, when the oscillation of the entropy and Bernoulli functions at the upstream is sufficiently small in $C^{1,1}$ and the mass flux is in a suitable regime, there exists a unique global subsonic solution in a suitable class of general nozzles. The assumptions are required to prevent from the occu…
We proved uniqueness and instability of the symmetric subsonic--sonic flow solution of the compressible potential flow equation in a surface with convergent areas of cross--sections. Such a surface may be regarded as an approximation of a two--dimensional convergent nozzle in aerodynamics. Mathematically these are uniqueness and nonexistence results of a nonlinear degenerate elliptic equation with Bernoulli type boundary conditions. The proof depends on maximum principles and a generalized Hopf boundary point lemma which was proved in the paper.
This paper considers the low Mach number limit and far field convergence rates of steady Euler flows with external forces in three-dimensional infinitely long nozzles with an obstacle inside. First, the well-posedness theory for both incompressible and compressible subsonic flows with external forces in multidimensional nozzle with an obstacle inside are established by several uniform estimates. The uniformly subsonic compressible flows tend to the incompressible flows as quadratic order of Mach number as the compressibility parameter goes to zero. Furthermore, we also give the convergence rat…
In this paper, we study the well-posedness/ill-posedness and regularity of stationary solutions to the hydrodynamic model of semiconductors represented by Euler-Poisson equations with sonic boundary. When the doping profile is subsonic, we prove that, the steady-state equations with sonic boundary possess a unique interior subsonic solution, and at least one interior supersonic solution, and if the relaxation time is large and the doping profile is a small perturbation of constant, then the equations admit infinitely many transonic shock solutions, while, if the relaxation time is small enough…

We establish unique existence and stability of subsonic potential flow for steady Euler-Poisson system in a multidimensional nozzle of a finite length when prescribing the electric potential difference on non-insulated boundary from a fixed point at the exit, and prescribing the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. The Euler-Poisson system for subsonic potential flow can be reduced to a nonlinear elliptic system of second order. In this paper, we develop a technique to achieve a priori $C^{1,\alp}$ estimates of solutions to a quasi-linear second order elliptic system with mixed boundary conditi…
This paper is concerned with the well-posedness theory of the impact of a subsonic axially symmetric jet emerging from a semi-infinitely long nozzle, onto a rigid wall. The fluid motion is described by the steady isentropic Euler system. We showed that there exists a critical value $M_{cr}>0$, if the given mass flux is less than $M_{cr}$, there exists a unique smooth subsonic axially symmetric jet issuing from the given semi-infinitely long nozzle and hitting a given uneven wall. The surface of the axially symmetric impinging jet is a free boundary, which detaches from the edge of the nozzle s…
This paper concerns smooth supersonic flows with Lipschitz continuous speed in two-dimensional infinite expanding nozzles, which are governed by a quasilinear hyperbolic equation being singular at the sonic and vacuum state. The flow satisfies the slip condition on the walls and the flow velocity is prescribed at the inlet. First, it is proved that if the incoming flow is away from the sonic and vacuum state and its streamlines are rarefactive at the inlet, then a flow in a straight nozzle never approaches the sonic and vacuum state in any bounded region. Furthermore, a sufficient and necessar…
We prove the existence of a subsonic weak solution $({\bf u}, ρ, p)$ to steady Euler system in a two-dimensional infinitely long nozzle when prescribing the value of the entropy $(= \frac{p}{ρ^γ})$ at the entrance by a piecewise $C^2$ function with a discontinuity at a point. Due to the variable entropy condition with a discontinuity at the entrance, the corresponding solution has a nonzero vorticity and contains a contact discontinuity $x_2=g_D(x_1)$. We construct such a solution via Helmholtz decomposition. The key step is to decompose the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions on the contact discontin…
This paper concerns compressible subsonic jet flows for a given surrounding pressure from a two-dimensional finitely long convergent nozzle with straight solid wall, which are governed by a free boundary problem for a quasilinear elliptic equation. For a given surrounding pressure and a given incoming mass flux, we seek a subsonic jet flow with the given incoming mass flux such that the flow velocity at the inlet is along the normal direction, the flow satisfies the slip condition at the wall, and the pressure of the flow at the free boundary coincides with the given surrounding pressure. In g…
We consider the stability of transonic contact discontinuity for the two-dimensional steady compressible Euler flows in a finitely long nozzle. This is the first work on the mixed-type problem of transonic flows across a contact discontinuity as a free boundary in nozzles. We start with the Euler-Lagrangian transformation to straighten the contact discontinuity in the new coordinates. However, the upper nozzle wall in the subsonic region depending on the mass flux becomes a free boundary after the transformation. Then we develop new ideas and techniques to solve the free-boundary problem in th…
We are concerned with isentropic gas flow in the Laval nozzle with a friction due to viscosity. It is well known that the flow attains the sonic state at the throat, where the cross section is minimum in the Laval nozzle. However, the present friction changes the position of the sonic state into downstream, which is called chooking. Our goal in this paper is to investigate this phenomena mathematically. From the mathematical point of view, the friction is different from normal frictions and difficult to treat with. In spite of its physical importance, the friction has not received much attenti…
We show that for steady compressible potential flow in a class of straight divergent nozzles with arbitrary cross-section, if the flow is supersonic and spherically symmetric at the entry, and the given pressure (velocity) is appropriately large (small) and also spherically symmetric at the exit, then there exists uniquely one transonic shock in the nozzle. In addition, the shock-front and the supersonic flow ahead of it, as well as the subsonic flow behind of it, are all spherically symmetric. This is a global uniqueness result of free boundary problems of elliptic--hyperbolic mixed type equa…
In this paper, we consider the one-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations with source term $β(t,x)ρ|u|^αu$ in a bounded domain, which can be used to describe gas transmission in a nozzle.~The model is imposed a subsonic time-periodic boundary condition.~Our main results reveal that the time-periodic boundary can trigger an unique subsonic time-periodic smooth solution and this unique periodic solution is stable under small perturbations on initial and boundary data.~To get the existence of subsonic time-periodic solution, we use the linear iterative skill and transfer the boundary…
The outflow problem for the viscous full two-phase flow model in a half line is investigated in the present paper. The existence, uniqueness and nonlinear stability of the steady-state are shown respectively corresponding to the supersonic, sonic or subsonic state at far field. This is different from the outflow problem for the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, where there is no steady-state for the subsonic state. Furthermore, we obtain either exponential time decay rates for the supersonic state or algebraic time decay rates for supersonic and sonic states in weighted Sobolev spaces.
In this paper, we are concerned with the structural stability of some steady subsonic solutions for Euler-Poisson system. A steady subsonic solution with subsonic background charge is proven to be structurally stable with respect to small perturbations of the background charge, the incoming flow angles, the normal electric field and the Bernoulli's function at the inlet and the end pressure at the exit, provided the background solution has a low Mach number and a small electric field. Following the idea developed in [19], we give a new formulation for Euler-Poisson equations, which employ the …
In this paper we are concerned with the existence of transonic shocks for 2-D steady isothermal Euler flows in a horizontal flat nozzle under vertical gravity. In particular, we focus on the contribution of the vertical gravity in determining the position of the shock front. For steady horizontal flows, the existence of normal shocks with the position of the shock front being arbitrary in the nozzle can be easily established. This paper will try to determine the position of the shock front as the state of the flow at the entrance of the nozzle and the pressure at the exit are slightly perturbe…
This paper concerns the existence of transonic shocks for steady exothermically reacting Euler flows in an almost flat nozzle with the small rate of the exothermic reaction. One of the key points is to quantitatively determine the position of the shock front in the nozzle. We focus on the contributions of the perturbation of the flat nozzle and the exothermic reaction in determining the position of the shock front by comparing the orders of $σ$ and $κ$, where $σ$ represents the scale of the perturbation of the flat nozzle and $κ$ the rate of the exothermic reaction. To this end, a free boundar…
In this article, we prove the existence and regularity of a smooth solution for a supersonic-sonic patch arising in a modified Frankl problem in the study of three-dimensional axisymmetric steady isentropic relativistic transonic flows over a symmetric airfoil. We consider a general convex equation of state which makes this problem complicated as well as interesting in the context of the general theory for transonic flows. Such type of patches appear in many transonic flows over an airfoil and flow near the nozzle throat. Here the main difficulty is the coupling of nonhomogeneous terms due to …
Given constant data of density $ρ_0$, velocity $-u_0{\bf e}_r$, pressure $p_0$ and electric force $-E_0{\bf e}_r$ for supersonic flow at the entrance, and constant pressure $p_{\rm ex}$ for subsonic flow at the exit, we prove that Euler-Poisson system admits a unique transonic shock solution in a two dimensional convergent nozzle, provided that $u_0>0$, $E_0>0$, and that $E_0$ is sufficiently large depending on $(ρ_0, u_0, p_0)$ and the length of the nozzle.
In this paper we prove existence, uniqueness and regularity of certain perturbed (subsonic--supersonic) transonic potential flows in a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with "convergent-divergent" metric, which is an approximate model of the de Laval nozzle in aerodynamics. The result indicates that transonic flows obtained by quasi-one-dimensional flow model in fluid dynamics are stable with respect to the perturbation of the velocity potential function at the entry (i.e., tangential velocity along the entry) of the nozzle. The proof is based upon linear theory of elliptic-hyperbolic mixed …
The shock reflection problem is one of the most important problems in mathematical fluid dynamics, since this problem not only arises in many important physical situations but also is fundamental for the theory of multidimensional conservation laws. However, most of the fundamental issues for shock reflection have not been understood. Therefore, it is important to establish the regularity of solutions to shock reflection in order to understand fully the phenomena of shock reflection. On the other hand, for a regular reflection configuration, the potential flow governs the exact behavior of the…
In this paper, we investigate steady inviscid compressible flows with radial symmetry in an annulus. The major concerns are transonic flows with or without shocks. One of the main motivations is to elucidate the role played by the angular velocity in the structure of steady inviscid compressible flows. We give a complete classification of flow patterns in terms of boundary conditions at the inner and outer circle. Due to the nonzero angular velocity, many new flow patterns will appear. There exists accelerating or decelerating smooth transonic flows in an annulus satisfying one side boundary c…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions with large vorticity and weak solutions with vortex sheets/entropy waves for the steady Euler equations for both compressible and incompressible fluids in arbitrary infinitely long nozzles. We first develop a new approach to establish the existence of smooth solutions without assumptions on the sign of the second derivatives of the horizontal velocity, or the Bernoulli and entropy functions, at the inlet for the smooth case. Then the existence for the smooth case can be applied to construct approximate solutions to establish the exi…
This paper concerns the structural stability of smooth cylindrically symmetric transonic flows in a concentric cylinder. Both cylindrical and axi-symmetric perturbations are considered. The governing system here is of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic and changes type and the suitable formulation of boundary conditions at the boundaries is of great importance. First, we establish the existence and uniqueness of smooth cylindrical transonic spiral solutions with nonzero angular velocity and vorticity which are close to the background transonic flow with small perturbations of the Bernoulli's function a…
