A linear inverse problem is proposed that requires the determination of multiple unknown signal vectors. Each unknown vector passes through a different system matrix and the results are added to yield a single observation vector. Given the matrices and lone observation, the objective is to find a simultaneously sparse set of unknown vectors that solves the system. We will refer to this as the multiple-system single-output (MSSO) simultaneous sparsity problem. This manuscript contrasts the MSSO problem with other simultaneous sparsity problems and conducts a thorough initial exploration of algorithms with which to solve it. Seven algorithms are formulated that approximately solve this NP-Hard problem. Three greedy techniques are developed (matching pursuit, orthogonal matching pursuit, and least squares matching pursuit) along with four methods based on a convex relaxation (iteratively reweighted least squares, two forms of iterative shrinkage, and formulation as a second-order cone program). The algorithms are evaluated across three experiments: the first and second involve sparsity profile recovery in noiseless and noisy scenarios, respectively, while the third deals with magnetic resonance imaging radio-frequency excitation pulse design.
In order to precondition Toeplitz systems, we present a new class of simultaneously diagonalizable real matrices, the Gamma-matrices, which include both symmetric circulant matrices and a subclass of the set of all reverse circulant matrices. We define some algorithms for fast computation of the product between a Gamma-matrix and a real vector and between two Gamma-matrices. Moreover, we illustrate a technique of approximating a real symmetric Toeplitz matrix by a Gamma-matrix, and we show that the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix are clustered around zero with the exception of at most…
In this paper, we propose a simple sparse approximate inverse for triangular matrices (SAIT). Using the Jacobi iteration method, we obtain an expression of the exact inverse of triangular matrix, which is a finite series. The SAIT is constructed based on this series. We apply the SAIT matrices to iterative methods with ILU preconditioners. The two triangular solvers in the ILU preconditioning procedure are replaced by two matrix-vector multiplications, which can be fine-grained parallelized. We test this method by solving some linear systems and eigenvalue problems with preconditioned iterativ…
We propose a new approximate factorization for solving linear systems with symmetric positive definite sparse matrices. In a nutshell the algorithm is to apply hierarchically block Gaussian elimination and additionally compress the fill-in. The systems that have efficient compression of the fill-in mostly arise from discretization of partial differential equations. We show that the resulting factorization can be used as an efficient preconditioner and compare the proposed approach with state-of-art direct and iterative solvers.
The geometric reinterpretation of the Finite Element Method (FEM) shows that Raviart Thomas and Nedelec mass matrices map from degrees of freedoms (DoFs) attached to geometric elements of a tetrahedral grid to DoFs attached to the barycentric dual grid. The algebraic inverses of the mass matrices map DoFs attached to the barycentric dual grid back to DoFs attached to the corresponding primal tetrahedral grid, but they are of limited practical use since they are dense. In this paper we present a new geometric construction of sparse inverse mass matrices for arbitrary tetrahedral grids and possi…
Characterizing simultaneously diagonalizable (SD) matrices has been receiving considerable attention in the recent decades due to its wide applications and its role in matrix analysis. However, the notion of SD matrices is arguably still restrictive for wider applications. In this paper, we consider two error measures related to the simultaneous diagonalization of matrices, and propose several new variants of SD thereof; in particular, TWSD, TWSD-B, T_{m,n}-SD (SDO), DWSD and D_{m,n}-SD (SDO). Those are all weaker forms of SD. We derive various sufficient and/or necessary conditions of them un…
We describe a second-order accurate approach to sparsifying the off-diagonal blocks in the hierarchical approximate factorizations of sparse symmetric positive definite matrices. The norm of the error made by the new approach depends quadratically, not linearly, on the error in the low-rank approximation of the given block. The analysis of the resulting two-level preconditioner shows that the preconditioner is second-order accurate as well. We incorporate the new approach into the recent Sparsified Nested Dissection algorithm [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 41 (2020), pp. 715-746], and test it on…
Finite element methods require the composition of the global stiffness matrix from local finite element contributions. The composition process combines the computation of element stiffness matrices and their assembly into the global stiffness matrix, which is commonly sparse. In this paper we focus on the assembly process of the global stiffness matrix and explore different algorithms and their efficiency on shared memory systems using C++. A key aspect of our investigation is the use of atomic synchronization primitives for the derivation of data-race free algorithms and data structures. Furt…
Domain decomposition methods are among the most efficient for solving sparse linear systems of equations. Their effectiveness relies on a judiciously chosen coarse space. Originally introduced and theoretically proved to be efficient for self-adjoint operators, spectral coarse spaces have been proposed in the past few years for indefinite and non-self-adjoint operators. This paper presents a new spectral coarse space that can be constructed in a fully-algebraic way unlike most existing spectral coarse spaces. We present theoretical convergence result for Hermitian positive definite diagonally …
Spectral projectors of Hermitian matrices play a key role in many applications, and especially in electronic structure computations. Linear scaling methods for gapped systems are based on the fact that these special matrix functions are localized, which means that the entries decay exponentially away from the main diagonal or with respect to more general sparsity patterns. The relation with the sign function together with an integral representation is used to obtain new decay bounds, which turn out to be optimal in an asymptotic sense. The influence of isolated eigenvalues in the spectrum on t…
Domain decomposition (DD) methods are widely used as preconditioner techniques. Their effectiveness relies on the choice of a locally constructed coarse space. Thus far, this construction was mostly achieved using non-assembled matrices from discretized partial differential equations (PDEs). Therefore, DD methods were mainly successful when solving systems stemming from PDEs. In this paper, we present a fully algebraic multilevel DD method where the coarse space can be constructed locally and efficiently without any information besides the coefficient matrix. The condition number of the precon…
This paper presents a self-contained factorization for the Vandermonde matrices associated with true-time delay based wideband analog multi-beam beamforming using antenna arrays. The proposed factorization contains sparse and orthogonal matrices. Novel self-recursive radix-2 algorithms for Vandermonde matrices associated with true time delay based delay-sum filterbanks are presented to reduce the circuit complexity of multi-beam analog beamforming systems. The proposed algorithms for Vandermonde matrices by a vector attain $\mathcal{O}(N \log N)$ delay-amplifier circuit counts. Error bounds fo…
