We describe a way to approximate the matrix elements of a real power $α$ of a positive (for $α\ge 0$) or non-negative (for $α\in \mathbb{R}$), infinite, bounded, sparse and Hermitian matrix $W$. The approximation uses only a finite part of the matrix $W$.
This paper aims at solving the Hermitian SDC problem, i.e., that of \textit{simultaneously diagonalizing via $*$-congruence} a collection of finitely many (not need pairwise commute) Hermitian matrices. Theoretically, we provide some equivalent conditions for that such a matrix collection can be simultaneously diagonalized via $^*$-congruence.% by a nonsingular matrix. Interestingly, one of such conditions leads to the existence of a positive definite solution to a semidefinite program (SDP). From practical point of view, we propose an algorithm for numerically solving such problem. The propos…
A new algorithm to approximate Hermitian matrices by positive semidefinite Hermitian matrices based on modified Cholesky decompositions is presented. In contrast to existing algorithms, this algorithm allows to specify bounds on the diagonal values of the approximation. It has no significant runtime and memory overhead compared to the computation of a classical Cholesky decomposition. Hence it is suitable for large matrices as well as sparse matrices since it preserves the sparsity pattern of the original matrix. The algorithm tries to minimize the approximation error in the Frobenius norm as …
Structured rational matrices such as symmetric, skew-symmetric, Hamiltonian, skew-Hamiltonian, Hermitian, and para-Hermitian rational matrices arise in many applications. Linearizations of rational matrices have been introduced recently for computing poles, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, minimal bases and minimal indices of rational matrices. For structured rational matrices, it is desirable to construct structure-preserving linearizations so as to preserve the symmetry in the eigenvalues and poles of the rational matrices. With a view to constructing structure-preserving linearizations of structu…
Spectral projectors of Hermitian matrices play a key role in many applications, and especially in electronic structure computations. Linear scaling methods for gapped systems are based on the fact that these special matrix functions are localized, which means that the entries decay exponentially away from the main diagonal or with respect to more general sparsity patterns. The relation with the sign function together with an integral representation is used to obtain new decay bounds, which turn out to be optimal in an asymptotic sense. The influence of isolated eigenvalues in the spectrum on t…
Recently a novel family of eigensolvers, called spectral indicator methods (SIMs), was proposed. Given a region on the complex plane, SIMs first compute an indicator by the spectral projection. The indicator is used to test if the region contains eigenvalue(s). Then the region containing eigenvalues(s) is subdivided and tested. The procedure is repeated until the eigenvalues are identified within a specified precision. In this paper, using Cayley transformation and Krylov subspaces, a memory efficient multilevel eigensolver is proposed. The method uses less memory compared with the early versi…
Given a limited amount of memory and a target accuracy, we propose and compare several polynomial Krylov methods for the approximation of f(A)b, the action of a Stieltjes matrix function of a large Hermitian matrix on a vector. Using new error bounds and estimates, as well as existing results, we derive predictions of the practical performance of the methods, and rank them accordingly. As by-products, we derive new results on inexact Krylov iterations for matrix functions in order to allow for a fair comparison of rational Krylov methods with polynomial inner solves.
This paper offers a review of numerical methods for computation of the eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices and the singular values of general and some classes of structured matrices. The focus is on the main principles behind the methods that guarantee high accuracy even in the cases that are ill-conditioned for the conventional methods. First, it is shown that a particular structure of the errors in a finite precision implementation of an algorithm allows for a much better measure of sensitivity and that computation with high accuracy is possible despite a large classical condition number. Such…
We introduce and develop a theory of orthogonality with respect to Sobolev inner products on the real line for sequences of functions with a tridiagonal, skew-Hermitian differentiation matrix. While a theory of such L2-orthogonal systems is well established, Sobolev orthogonality requires new concepts and their analysis. We characterise such systems completely as appropriately weighed Fourier transforms of orthogonal polynomials and present a number of illustrative examples, inclusive of a Sobolev-orthogonal system whose leading N coefficients can be computed in $\mathcal{O}(N \log N)$ operati…
