We investigate a photoinduced insulator-metal transition in the Falicov-Kimball model with the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) extended to nonequilibrium systems in periodic modulations in time. When the photon energy of the pump light is $Ω\approx U$ ($U$: the interaction strength), a Drude-like peak is found to grow in the optical conductivity spectrum, which is an evidence that the system is driven into a metallic state. During the transition, the band gap does not collapse, whereas the distribution function exhibits a non-monotonic behaviour away from the Fermi distribution. This indicates that the transition cannot be accounted for by heating effects, but creation of photo-carriers is responsible.
We propose to combine the Floquet formalism for systems in ac fields with the dynamical mean-field theory to study correlated electron systems periodically driven out of equilibrium by external fields such as intense laser light. This approach has a virtue that we can nonperturbatively include both the correlation effects and nonlinear effects due to the driving field, which is imperative in analyzing recent experiments for photoinduced phase transitions. In solving the problem, we exploit a general theorem that the Hamiltonian in a Floquet matrix form can be exactly diagonalized for single-ba…

In order to investigate photoinduced insulator-metal transitions observed in correlated electron systems, we propose a new theoretical method, where we combine a Floquet-matrix method for AC-driven systems with the dynamical mean-field theory. The method can treat nonequilibrium steady states exactly beyond the linear-response regime. We have applied the method to the Falicov-Kimball model coupled to AC electric fields, and numerically obtained the spectral function, the nonequilibrium distribution function and the current-voltage characteristic. The results show that intense AC fields indeed …
We present an ab initio quantum theory of the metal-insulator transition in Ti$_2$O$_3$. The recently developed cluster LDA+DMFT scheme is applied to describe the many-body features of this compound. The conventional single site DMFT cannot reproduce a low temperature insulating phase for any reasonable values of the Coulomb interaction. We show that the non-local Coulomb interactions and the strong chemical bonding within Ti-Ti pair is the origin of the small gap insulating ground state of Ti$_2$O$_3$.
Utilizing the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group technique, we numerically prove photoinduced pairing states in the extended Falicov-Kimball model (EFKM) at half filling, both with and without internal SU(2) symmetry. In the time-dependent photoemission spectra an extra band appears above the Fermi energy after pulse irradiation, indicating an insulator-to-metal transition. Even in the absence of the SU(2) structure, the pair correlations are enhanced during the pump, and afterwards decrease over time. This implies the possible metallization of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, a strong candida…
We investigate the insulating phases of a frustrated Hubbard model in its strong coupling regime at half-filling. We pay special attention to all the symmetry breaking instabilities that can be described by Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) on a square plaquette. We identify several mean-field solutions, two Neel states breaking the SU(2) symmetry, a dimer phase and a Mott insulator which doesn't break any symmetry. The singlet to singlet fluctuations soften dramatically in the latter phase, giving rise to dimerization fluctuations as well as chiral fluctuations that are both low-lying. We pr…

The electronic properties of paramagnetic V_2O_3 are investigated by the ab-initio computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). This approach merges the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and uses numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations (QMC) to solve the effective Anderson impurity model of DMFT. Starting with the crystal structure of metallic V_2O_3 and insulating (V_{0.962}Cr_{0.038})_2O_3 we find a Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator-like transition at a Coulomb interaction U\approx 5eV. The calculated spectrum is in very good agreement with experiment. Fur…
The question if a Mott insulator and a band insulator are fundamentally different has been the matter of intensive research recently. Here we consider a simple model which allows by tuning one parameter to go continously from a Mott insulator to band insulator. The model consists of two Hubbard systems connected by single particle hopping. The Hubbard Hamiltonian is solved by the Dynamical Mean-Field theory using Quantum Monte Carlo to solve the resulting quantum impurity problem. The quasiparticle spectral function is calculated. Here we focus on the optical conductivity and in particular on …
Employing the density-matrix renormalization group technique in the matrix-product-state representation, we investigate the photoexcited superconducting correlations induced by the $η$-pairing mechanism in the half-filled Hubbard chain. We estimate the characteristic pair correlation function and verify the accuracy of our numerical results by comparison with exact-diagonalization data for small systems. The optimal parameter set of the pump that most enhances the $η$-pair correlations, is calculated in the strong-coupling regime. For such a pump, we explore the possibility of quasi-long-range…
We report on systematic investigation of hot carrier dynamics in Ti4O7 by ultrafast time-resolved optical reflectivity. We find the transient indication for its two-step insulator-metal (I-M) transition, in which two phase transitions occur from long-range order bipolaron low-temperature insulating (LI) phase to disordered bipolaron high-temperature insulating (HI) phase at Tc1 and to free carrier metallic (M) phase at Tc2. Our results reveal that photoexcitation can effectively lower down both Tc1 and Tc2 with pump fluence increasing, allowing a light-control of I-M transition. We address a p…
We discuss the recently proposed LDA'+DMFT approach providing consistent parameter free treatment of the so called double counting problem arising within the LDA+DMFT hybrid computational method for realistic strongly correlated materials. In this approach the local exchange-correlation portion of electron-electron interaction is excluded from self consistent LDA calculations for strongly correlated electronic shells, e.g. d-states of transition metal compounds. Then the corresponding double counting term in LDA+DMFT Hamiltonian is consistently set in the local Hartree (fully localized limit -…
We study the photoinduced breakdown of a two-orbital Mott insulator and resulting metallic state. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we scrutinize the real-time dynamics of the half-filled two-orbital Hubbard model interacting with a resonant radiation field pulse. The breakdown, caused by production of doublon-holon pairs, is enhanced by Hund's exchange, which dynamically activates large orbital fluctuations. The melting of the Mott insulator is accompanied by a high to low spin transition with a concomitant reduction of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Most notabl…
Based on recent experiments, we describe the Mott insulating, but undimerized state of $TiOCl$ using the local-density approximation combined with multi-orbital dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT) for this $3d^{1}$ system.Good agreement with the high estimated value of the superexchange is obtained. The possibility of an electron-doped insulator-metal transition in $TiOCl$ is investigated in this scheme and a Mott-Hubbard transition with a jump in carrier density {\it inside} the metallic state is found. Clear, co-incident, discontinuous changes in orbital occupations are observed, showing …
We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of photoexcited electrons in the narrow-gap Mott insulator VO$_2$. The initial stages of relaxation are treated using a quantum Boltzmann equation methodology, which reveals a rapid ($\sim$ femtosecond time scale) relaxation to a pseudothermal state characterized by a few parameters that vary slowly in time. The long-time limit is then studied by a Hartree-Fock methodology, which reveals the possibility of nonequilibrium excitation to a new metastable $M_1$ metal phase that is qualitatively consistent with a recent experiment. The general physical picture o…
Oxygen vacancies are a common source of excess electrons in complex oxides. In Mott insulators these additional electrons can induce a metal-insulator transition (MIT), fundamentally altering the electronic properties of the system. Here we study the effect of oxygen vacancies in LaTiO3, a prototypical Mott insulator close to the MIT. We show that the introduction of oxygen vacancies creates a vacancy-related band immediately below the partially filled Ti-t2g bands. We study the effect of this additional band on the Mott MIT using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-f…
The control of materials properties with light is a promising approach towards the realization of faster and smaller electronic devices. With phases that can be controlled via strain, pressure, chemical composition or dimensionality, nickelates are good candidates for the development of a new generation of high performance and low consumption devices. Here we analyze the photoinduced dynamics in a single crystalline NdNiO$_3$ film upon excitation across the electronic gap. Using time-resolved reflectivity and resonant x-ray diffraction, we show that the pump pulse induces an insulator-to-metal…
Topological magnon insulators are the bosonic analogs of electronic topological insulators. They are manifested in magnetic materials with topologically nontrivial magnon bands as realized experimentally in a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) kagome ferromagnet Cu(1-3, bdc), and they also possess protected magnon edge modes. These topological magnetic materials can transport heat as well as spin currents, hence they can be useful for spintronic applications. Moreover, as magnons are charge-neutral spin-${\bf 1}$ bosonic quasiparticles with a magnetic dipole moment, topological magnon materials …
We present a new method, ePT, for extrapolating few known coefficients of a perturbative expansion. Controlled by comparisons with numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results, 10th order strong-coupling perturbation theory (PT) for the Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice is reliably extrapolated to infinite order. Within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), we obtain continuous estimates of energy E and double occupancy D with unprecedented precision O(10^{-5}) for the Mott insulator above its stability edge U_{c1}=4.78 as well as critical exponents. In addition, we derive corresponding …
Femtosecond time-resolved mid-infrared reflectivity is used to investigate the electron and phonon dynamics occurring at the direct band gap of the excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ below the critical temperature of its structural phase transition. We find that the phonon dynamics show a strong coupling to the excitation of free carriers at the Γ point of the Brillouin zone. The optical response saturates at a critical excitation fluence $F_C = 0.30~\pm~0.08$~mJ/cm$^2$ due to optical absorption saturation. This limits the optical excitation density in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ so that the system cannot …
To elucidate different photoinduced melting dynamics of charge orders observed in quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors $ θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$RbZn(SCN)$_4$ and $ α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ [BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene], we theoretically study photoinduced time evolution of charge and spin correlation functions on the basis of exact many-electron wave functions coupled with classical phonons in extended Peierls-Hubbard models on anisotropic triangular lattices. In both salts, the so-called horizontal-stripe charge order is stabilized by nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions and…
Ultrafast dynamics across the photoinduced three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal (IM) transition in CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ was investigated by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. The structural coherence of the low-$T$ broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshold excitation fluence of $F_{\mathrm{c}}\approx3$ mJ/cm$^{2}$ (at 1.55-eV photon energy) resulting in a structurally inhomogeneous transient state which persists for several-tens of picoseconds before reverting to the original low-$T$ state. The el…
One of the remarkable interaction effects on topological insulators is the reduction of topological classification in free-fermion systems. We address this issue in a bilayer honeycomb lattice model by taking into account temperature effects on the reduction. Our analysis, based on the real-space dynamical mean field theory, elucidates the following results. (i) Even when the reduction occurs, the winding number defined by the Green's function can take a nontrivial value at zero temperature. (ii) The winding number taking the nontrivial value becomes consistent with the absence of gapless edge…
The LDA+DMFT (local density approximation combined with dynamical mean-field theory) computation scheme has been used to study spectral and magnetic properties of FeSi and Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si. Having compared different models we conclude that a correlated band insulator scenario in contrast to Kondo insulator model agrees with FeSi band structure as well as experimental data. Coulomb correlation effects lead to band narrowing of the states near the Fermi level with mass renormalization parameter $m^*\approx 2$ in agreement with the results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).…
The spectral properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$, a doped Mott insulator with strong Coulomb correlations, are calculated with the ab initio computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). It starts from the non-interacting electronic band structure as calculated by the local density approximation (LDA), and introduces the missing correlations by the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) techniques to solve the resulting self-consistent multi-band single-impurity problem. The results of the LDA+DMFT(QMC) approach for the photoemission spectra of La$_{1…
The metal-insulator transition (MIT) in paramagnetic VO2 is studied within LDA+DMFT(IPT), which merges the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). With a fixed value of the Coulomb U=5.0eV, we show how the MIT is understood in a new picture: spectral weight transfer accompanying the increase in the displacement of V ion ($\perp c$) within the strong correlation scenario. Within this new scenario, we find good quantitative agreement with (i) switch of the orbital occupation of (xy,yz+zx,yz-zx), (ii) thermodynamics, and (iii) the one-electron spectral function …
In the framework of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) we analyze Hall effect in doped Mott insulator as a parent cuprate superconductor. We consider the partial filling (hole doping) of the lower Hubbard band and calculate the dependence of Hall coefficient and Hall number on hole doping, determining the critical concentration for sign change of the Hall coefficient. Significant temperature dependence of Hall effect is noted. A good agreement is demonstrated with concentration dependence of Hall number obtained in experiments in the normal state of YBCO.
While the traditional local-density approximation (LDA) cannot describe Mott insulators, {\it ab-initio} determination of the Hubbard $U$, for example, limits LDA-plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approaches. Here, we attempt to overcome these bottlenecks by achieving fusion of the quantum chemistry (QC) approach with DMFT. QC+DMFT supplants the LDA bandstructure by its QC counterpart as an input to DMFT. Using QC+DMFT, we show that undoped $La_{2}CuO_{4}$ is a $d$-Mott insulator, and qualitatively discuss the circulating current- and incoherent metal phase, at small but finite hole dopi…
We performed optical-pump terahertz-probe measurements of a Mott insulator YTiO$_{3}$ and a band semiconductor Si using a laser diode (1.47 eV) and a femtosecond pulse laser (1.55 eV). Both samples possess long energy-relaxation times (1.5 ms for YTiO$_{3}$ and 15 $μ$s for Si); therefore, it is possible to extract terahertz complex conductivities of photoinduced carriers under equilibrium. We observed highly contrasting behavior - Drude conductivity in Si and localized conductivity possibly obeying the Jonscher law in YTiO$_{3}$. The carrier number at the highest carrier-concentration layer in…
The spinel-structure CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ compound displays a rather unusual orbitally-driven three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal transition. The low-T symmetry-broken insulating state is especially interesting due to the existence of a metastable irradiation-induced disordered weakly conducting state. Here we study intense femtosecond optical pulse irradiation effects by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. We show that the structural coherence of the low-T broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshol…
We present a formalism based on nonequilibrium dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) which allows to compute the time-resolved X-ray absorption spectrum (XAS) of photo-excited solids. By applying this formalism to the photo-doped half-filled and quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard models in the Mott insulating regime we clarify how the time-resolved XAS signal reflects the nonequilibrium population of different local states. Apart from the missing broadening associated with continuum excitations, the atomic XAS spectrum computed with the nonthermal state populations provides a good approximation t…
We present results of combined density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations, which show that the Mott insulator LaTiO3 undergoes an insulator-to-metal transition under compressive epitaxial strain of about -2%. This transition is driven by strain-induced changes in the crystal-field splitting between the Ti t2g orbitals, which in turn are intimately related to the collective tilts and rotations of the oxygen octahedra in the orthorhombically distorted Pbnm perovskite structure. An accurate treatment of the underlying crystal structure is therefore crucial …
We study the magnetic field driven metal-to-insulator transition in half-filled Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice, using the dynamical mean-field theory by solving the quantum impurity problem with density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. The method enables us to obtain a high-resolution spectral densities in the presence of a magnetic field. It is found that the Kondo resonance at the Fermi level splits at relatively high magnetic field: the spin-up and spin-down components move away from the Fermi level and finally form a spin polarized band insulator. By calculating the magnetizatio…

The theoretical understanding of emergent phenomena in quantum materials is one of the greatest challenges in condensed matter physics. In contrast to simple materials such as noble metals and semiconductors, macroscopic properties of quantum materials cannot be predicted by the properties of individual electrons. One of the examples of scientific importance is strongly correlated electron system. Neither localized nor itinerant behaviors of electrons in partially filled 3d, 4f, and 5f orbitals give rise to rich physics such as Mott insulators, high-temperature superconductors, and superior th…
A full implementation of the $ab$ $initio$ density functional plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) formalism to perform total energy calculations and structural relaxations is proposed and implemented. The method is applied to the structural and metal-insulator transitions of the rare earth nickelate perovskites as a function of rare earth ion, pressure, and temperature. In contrast to previous DFT and DFT+$U$ theories, the present method accounts for the experimentally observed structure of $La$NiO$_3$ and the insulating nature of the other perovskites, and quantitatively reproduces th…
We present a theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of rutile (metallic) and M$_1$ and M$_2$ monoclinic (insulating) phases of VO$_2$ employing a fully self-consistent combination of density functional theory and embedded dynamical mean field theory calculations. We describe the electronic structure of the metallic and both insulating phases of VO$_2$, and propose a distinct mechanism for the gap opening. We show that Mott physics plays an essential role in all phases of VO$_2$: undimerized vanadium atoms undergo classical Mott transition through local moment formation (in the M…
Photoinduced topological phase transitions in the Dirac-electron systems have attracted intensive research interest since its theoretical prediction in graphene, where the application of circularly polarized light opens a gap at the Dirac points and renders the system a topologically nontrivial Chern insulator phase through breaking the time-reversal symmetry. However, most of the previously studied phenomena in two-dimensional Dirac systems are basically based on the same physicical mechanism, i.e., the gap opening in the Dirac electron bands with circularly polarized light, and it is lacking…
We studied the electronic and magnetic dynamics of ferromagnetic insulating BaFeO3 thin films by using pump-probe time-resolved resonant x-ray reflectivity at the Fe 2p edge. By changing the excitation density, we found two distinctly different types of demagnetization with a clear threshold behavior. We assigned the demagnetization change from slow (~ 150 ps) to fast (< 70 ps) to a transition into a metallic state induced by laser excitation. These results provide a novel approach for locally tuning magnetic dynamics. In analogy to heat assisted magnetic recording, metallization can locally t…
Perovskite manganite thin films, $Pr_{0.55}(Ca_{1-y}Sr_y)_{0.45}MnO_3$, have been studied using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy in order to clarify the consequence of the competition between ferromagnetic metal (FM) and charge-orbital ordered insulator (COOI). Films with $y$ = 0.40 undergo uniform paramagnetic insulator to FM transition. On the other hand, in films with $y$ = 0.25, the composition near the bicritical point, phase separation of COOI and FM domains is indicated by the spectral change below 125 K. Interestingly, between 50 K and 70 K, the visible laser illumination transfers the…
We study the critical behavior of the single-site entanglement entropy S at the Mott metal-insulator transition in infinite-dimensional Hubbard model. For this model, the entanglement between a single site and rest of the lattice can be evaluated exactly, using the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Both the numerical solution using exact diagonalization and the analytical one using two-site DMFT gives S-Sc \propto α\log_{2}[(1/2-Dc)/Dc](U-Uc), with Dc the double occupancy at Uc and α< 0 being different on two sides of the transition.
We use the Local Density Approximation in combination with the Dynamical Mean Field Theory to investigate intermediate energy properties of the copper oxides. We identify coherent and incoherent spectral features that results from doping a charge transfer insulator, namely quasiparticles, Zhang-Rice singlet band, and the upper and lower Hubbard bands. Angle resolving these features, we identify a \emphasize{waterfall} like feature, between the quasiparticle part and the incoherent part of the Zhang-Rice band. We investigate the assymetry between particle and hole doping. On the hole doped side…
We study the high harmonic generation (HHG) in Mott insulators using Floquet dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We show that the main origin of the HHG in Mott insulators is the doublon-holon recombination, and that the character of the HHG spectrum differs depending on the field strength. In the weaker-field regime, the HHG spectrum shows a single plateau as in the HHG from gases, and its cut-off energy $ε_{\rm cut}$ scales linearly with the field strength $E_0$ as $ε_{\rm cut}=Δ_{\rm gap} + αE_0$, where $Δ_{\rm gap}$ is the Mott gap. On the other hand, in the stronger-field regime, multiple…
We derive a formula for the electric polarization of interacting insulators, expressed in terms of the full Green's and vertex functions. We exemplify this method in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model treated within dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The electric polarization of a correlated band insulator is determined by the interplay of ionicity and covalency, and both quantities are renormalized by the electron-electron interactions. We introduce quasiparticle approximation to the exact equation for the polarization, and compare the results of this approximation with those of the exact D…
The doping induced insulator-metal transition in $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}TiO_{3}$ is studied using the ab-initio LDA+DMFT method. Combining the LDA bandstructure for the actual, distorted structure found recently with multi-orbital DMFT to treat electronic correlations, we find: $(i)$ ferro-orbital order in the Mott insulating state without orbital degeneracy, $(ii)$ a continuous filling induced transition to the paramagnetic metal (PM) with $x$, and $(iii)$ excellent quantitative agreement with published photoemission data for the case of 6% doping. Our results imply that this system can be described …
The paramagnetic phase of the one-band Hubbard model is studied at zero-temperature, within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory, and for general particle-hole asymmetry where a doping-induced Mott transition occurs. Our primary focus is the Mott insulator (MI) phase, and our main aim to establish what can be shown exactly about it. To handle the locally doubly-degenerate MI requires two distinct self-energies, which reflect the broken symmetry nature of the phase and together determine the standard single self-energy. Exact results are obtained for the local charge, local magnetic mom…
We study photoinduced optical responses of one-dimensional strongly correlated electron systems. The optical conductivity spectra are calculated for the ground state and a photoexcited state in the one-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling by using the exact diagonalization method. It is found that, in the Mott insulator phase, the photoexcited state has large spectral weights including the Drude weight below the optical gap. As a consequence, the spectral weight above the optical gap is largely reduced. These results imply that a metallic state is induced by photoexcitation. Comparison be…
Photo-excited state in correlated electron system with spin-state degree of freedom is studied. We start from the two-orbital extended Hubbard model where energy difference between the two orbitals is introduced. Photo-excited metastable state is examined based on the effective model Hamiltonian derived by the two-orbital Hubbard model. Spin-state change is induced by photo-irradiation in the low-spin band insulator near the phase boundary. High-spin state is stabilized by creating a ferromagnetic bound state with photo-doped hole carriers. An optical absorption occurs between the bonding and …
We apply the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) in the iterative perturbation theory(IPT) to doubly degenerate eg bands and triply degenerate tg bands on a simple cubic lattice and calculate the spectrum and optical conductivity in arbitrary electron occupation. The spectrum simultaneously shows the effects of multiplet structure and DMFT together with the electron ionization and affinity levels of different electron occupations, coherent peaks at the Fermi energy in the metallic phase and a gap at an integer filling of electrons for sufficiently large Coulomb U. We also calculate the critical…
Simulations are carried out based on the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in order to investigate the properties of correlated thin films for various values of the chemical potential, temperature, interaction strength, and applied transverse electric field. Application of a sufficiently strong field to a thin film at half-filling leads to the appearance of conducting regions near the surfaces of the film, whereas in doped slabs the application of a field leads to a conductivity enhancement on one side of the film and a gradual transition to the insulating state on the opposite side. In addit…
For electronic states and photoinduced charge dynamics near the neutral-ionic transition in the mixed-stack charge-transfer complex tetrathiafulvalene-$p$-chloranil (TTF-CA), we review the effects of Peierls coupling to lattice phonons modulating transfer integrals and Holstein couplings to molecular vibrations modulating site energies. The former stabilizes the ionic phase and reduces discontinuities in the phase transition, while the latter stabilizes the neutral phase and enhances the discontinuities. To reproduce the experimentally observed ionicity, optical conductivity and photoinduced c…
We theoretically investigate possible photoinduced topological phase transitions in the organic salt $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, which possesses a pair of inclined massless Dirac-cone bands between the conduction and valence bands under uniaxial pressure. The Floquet analyses of a driven tight-binding model for this material reveal rich photoinduced variations of band structures, Chern numbers, and Hall conductivities under irradiation with elliptically polarized light. The obtained phase diagrams contain a variety of nonequilibrium steady phases, e.g., the Floquet Chern insulator, Floquet semime…
We present a joint implementation of dynamical-mean-field theory (DMFT) with the pseudopotential plane-wave approach, via Wannier functions, for the determination of the electronic properties of strongly correlated materials. The scheme uses, as input for the DMFT calculations, a tight-binding Hamiltonian obtained from the plane-wave calculations by projecting onto atomic-centered symmetry-constrained Wannier functions for the correlated orbitals. We apply this scheme to two prototype systems: a paramagnetic correlated metal, SrVO3, and a paramagnetic correlated system, V2O3, which exhibits a …
Combining density functional theory (DFT) and embedded dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) methods, we study the metal-insulator transition in $R_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($R$=Y, Eu, Sm, Nd, Pr, and Bi) and the topological nature of the insulating compounds. Accurate free energies evaluated using the charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT method reveal that the metal-insulator transition occurs for an A-cation radius between that of Nd and Pr, in agreement with experiments. The all-in-all-out magnetic phase, which is stable in the Nd compound but not the Pr one, gives rise to a small Ir$^{4+}$ magnetic moment of…
The first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) in paramagnetic $V_{2}O_{3}$ is studied within the ab-initio scheme LDA+DMFT, which merges the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). With a fixed value of the Coulomb $U=6.0 eV$, we show how the abrupt pressure driven MIT is understood in a new picture: pressure-induced decrease of the trigonal distortion within the strong correlation scenario (which is not obtained within LDA). We find good quantitative agreement with $(i)$ switch of the orbital occupation of $(a_{1g},e_{g1}^π, e_{g2}^π)$ and the spin state …
We present a computational study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and x-ray absorption in a representative rare-earth nickelate LuNiO$_3$. We study the changes in the spectra across the metal-insulator/site-disproportionation transition. In particular, we address the question of site-selectivity of the two methods in the disproportionated insulating phase and the signature of metal-insulator transition in the fluorescence-like feature of the RIXS spectra. To this end we use the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approach combined with configuratio…
We study metal-insulator transitions between Mott insulators and metals. The transition mechanism completely different from the original dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) emerges from a cluster extension of it. A consistent picture suggests that the quasiparticle weight $Z$ remains nonzero through metals and suddenly jumps to zero at the transition, while the gap opens continuously in the insulators. This is in contrast with the original DMFT, where $Z$ continuously vanishes but the gap opens discontinuously. The present results arising from electron differentiation in momentum space agree wi…
