Employing the density-matrix renormalization group technique in the matrix-product-state representation, we investigate the photoexcited superconducting correlations induced by the $η$-pairing mechanism in the half-filled Hubbard chain. We estimate the characteristic pair correlation function and verify the accuracy of our numerical results by comparison with exact-diagonalization data for small systems. The optimal parameter set of the pump that most enhances the $η$-pair correlations, is calculated in the strong-coupling regime. For such a pump, we explore the possibility of quasi-long-range order.

We theoretically investigate pump-probe optical responses in the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model describing cuprates by using a time-dependent Lanczos method. At half filling, pumping generates photoinduced absorptions inside the Mott gap. A part of low-energy absorptions is attributed to the independent propagation of photoinduced holons and doublons. The spectral weight just below the Mott gap increases with decreasing the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. We find that the next-nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction $V_1$ enhances this $U$ dependence, indicating the presence of biexciton…
We study the photoinduced breakdown of a two-orbital Mott insulator and resulting metallic state. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we scrutinize the real-time dynamics of the half-filled two-orbital Hubbard model interacting with a resonant radiation field pulse. The breakdown, caused by production of doublon-holon pairs, is enhanced by Hund's exchange, which dynamically activates large orbital fluctuations. The melting of the Mott insulator is accompanied by a high to low spin transition with a concomitant reduction of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Most notabl…
We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of photoexcited electrons in the narrow-gap Mott insulator VO$_2$. The initial stages of relaxation are treated using a quantum Boltzmann equation methodology, which reveals a rapid ($\sim$ femtosecond time scale) relaxation to a pseudothermal state characterized by a few parameters that vary slowly in time. The long-time limit is then studied by a Hartree-Fock methodology, which reveals the possibility of nonequilibrium excitation to a new metastable $M_1$ metal phase that is qualitatively consistent with a recent experiment. The general physical picture o…
We numerically prove photoinduced $η$-pairing in a half-filled fermionic Hubbard chain at both zero and finite temperature. The result, obtained by combining the matrix-product-state based infinite time-evolving block decimation technique and the purification method, applies to the thermodynamic limit. Exciting the Mott insulator by a laser electric field docked on via the Peierls phase, we track the time-evolution of the correlated many-body system and determine the optimal parameter set for which the nonlocal part of the $η$-pair correlation function becomes dominant during the laser pump at…

We performed optical-pump terahertz-probe measurements of a Mott insulator YTiO$_{3}$ and a band semiconductor Si using a laser diode (1.47 eV) and a femtosecond pulse laser (1.55 eV). Both samples possess long energy-relaxation times (1.5 ms for YTiO$_{3}$ and 15 $μ$s for Si); therefore, it is possible to extract terahertz complex conductivities of photoinduced carriers under equilibrium. We observed highly contrasting behavior - Drude conductivity in Si and localized conductivity possibly obeying the Jonscher law in YTiO$_{3}$. The carrier number at the highest carrier-concentration layer in…
The transient optical conductivity of photoexcited 1T-TaS2 is determined over a three-order-of-magnitude frequency range. Prompt collapse and recovery of the Mott gap is observed. However, we find important differences between this transient metallic state and that seen across the thermally-driven insulator-metal transition. Suppressed low-frequency conductivity, Fano phonon lineshapes, and a mid-infrared absorption band point to polaronic transport. This is explained by noting that the photo-induced metallic state of 1T-TaS2 is one in which the Mott gap is melted but the lattice retains its l…
By employing the time-dependent exact diagonalization method, we investigate the photoexcited states of the excitonic insulator in the extended Falicov-Kimball model (EFKM). We here show that the pulse irradiation can induce the interband electron-electron pair correlation in the photoexcited states, while the excitonic electron-hole pair correlation in the initial ground state is strongly suppressed. We also show that the photoexcited states contains the eigenstates of the EFKM with a finite number of interband electron-electron pairs, which are responsible for the enhancement of the electron…
In order to investigate photoinduced insulator-metal transitions observed in correlated electron systems, we propose a new theoretical method, where we combine a Floquet-matrix method for AC-driven systems with the dynamical mean-field theory. The method can treat nonequilibrium steady states exactly beyond the linear-response regime. We have applied the method to the Falicov-Kimball model coupled to AC electric fields, and numerically obtained the spectral function, the nonequilibrium distribution function and the current-voltage characteristic. The results show that intense AC fields indeed …
The previous theoretical study has shown that pulse irradiation to the Mott insulating state in the Hubbard model can induce the enhancement of superconducting correlation due to the generation of $η$ pairs. Here, we show that the same mechanism can be applied to the Kondo lattice model, an effective model for heavy electron systems, by demonstrating that the pulse irradiation indeed enhances the $η$-pairing correlation. As in the case of the Hubbard model, the non-linear optical process is essential to increase the number of photoinduced $η$ pairs and thus the enhancement of the superconducti…
We study photoinduced optical responses of one-dimensional strongly correlated electron systems. The optical conductivity spectra are calculated for the ground state and a photoexcited state in the one-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling by using the exact diagonalization method. It is found that, in the Mott insulator phase, the photoexcited state has large spectral weights including the Drude weight below the optical gap. As a consequence, the spectral weight above the optical gap is largely reduced. These results imply that a metallic state is induced by photoexcitation. Comparison be…
Photoinduced carrier dynamics in a correlated electron system on a coupled two-leg ladder lattice are studied. The two-leg ladder Hubbard model is analyzed by utilizing the exact diagonalization method based on the Lanczos algorithm in finite size clusters. In order to reveal the transient carrier dynamics after photoirradiation, we calculate the low-energy components of the hole kinetic energy, the pair-field correlation function, the optical conductivity spectra and others. It is shown that the photoinduced metallic-like state appears in a half filled Mott insulating state, while the low-ene…
By employing unbiased numerical methods, we show that pulse irradiation can induce unconventional superconductivity even in the Mott insulator of the Hubbard model. The superconductivity found here in the photoexcited state is due to the $η$-pairing mechanism, characterized by staggered pair-density-wave oscillations in the off-diagonal long-range correlation, and is absent in the ground-state phase diagram; i.e., it is induced neither by a change of the effective interaction of the Hubbard model nor by simple photocarrier doping. Because of the selection rule, we show that the nonlinear optic…
We theoretically study pump-photon-energy-dependent pathways of a photoinduced dimer-Mott-insulator-to-metal transition, on the basis of numerical solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the exact many-body wave function of a two-dimensional three-quarter-filled extended Peierls-Hubbard model. When molecular degrees of freedom inside a dimer are utilized, photoexcitation can weaken the effective interaction or increase the density of photocarriers. In the organic dimer Mott insulator, $ κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br, the intradimer and the interdimer charge-transfer excitat…
We investigate a model for a Mott insulator in presence of a time-periodic modulated interaction and a coupling to a thermal reservoir. The combination of drive and dissipation leads to non-equilibrium steady states with a large number of doublon excitations, well above the maximum thermal-equilibrium value. We interpret this effect as an enhancement of local pairing correlations, providing analytical arguments based on a Floquet Hamiltonian. Remarkably, this Hamiltonian shows a tendency to develop long-range staggered superconducting correlations. This suggests the possibility of realizing th…
We investigate how the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator evolves into the d-wave BCS superconductor through hole doping. Allowing spin fluctuations in the strong coupling approach, we find a spin-gapped incoherent metal with preformed pairing as an intermediate phase between the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator and d-wave superconductor. This non-Fermi liquid metal is identified with an infrared stable fixed point in the spin-decomposition gauge theory, analogous to the spin liquid insulator in the slave-boson gauge theory. We consider the single particle spectrum and dynamical spin susceptibil…
Photoinduced phase switching at a Mott insulator-to-metal transition

Dynamical properties of photoexcited states are theoretically studied in a one-dimensional Mott insulator dimerized by the spin-Peierls instability. Numerical calculations combined with a perturbative analysis have revealed that the lowest photoexcited state without nearest-neighbor interaction corresponds to an interdimer charge transfer excitation that belongs to dispersive excitations. This excited state destabilizes the dimerized phase, leading to a photoinduced inverse spin-Peierls transition. We discuss the purely electronic origin of midgap states that are observed in a latest photoexci…
We have examined the relaxation of photoinduced quasiparticles in the heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoGa5. The deduced electron-phonon coupling constant is incompatible with the measured superconducting transition temperature Tc=18.5 K, which speaks against phonon-mediated superconducting pairing. Upon lowering the temperature, we observe an order-of-magnitude increase of the quasiparticle relaxation time in agreement with the phonon bottleneck scenario - evidence for the presence of a hybridization gap in the electronic density of states. The modification of photoinduced reflectance in the s…
Utilizing the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group technique, we numerically prove photoinduced pairing states in the extended Falicov-Kimball model (EFKM) at half filling, both with and without internal SU(2) symmetry. In the time-dependent photoemission spectra an extra band appears above the Fermi energy after pulse irradiation, indicating an insulator-to-metal transition. Even in the absence of the SU(2) structure, the pair correlations are enhanced during the pump, and afterwards decrease over time. This implies the possible metallization of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, a strong candida…
Cooper pairing instability in a Fermi liquid is well understood by the BCS theory, but pairing mechanism for doped Mott insulators still remains elusive. Previously it has been shown by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method that a single doped hole is always self-localized due to the quantum destructive interference of the phase string signs hidden in the t-J ladders. Here we report a DMRG investigation of hole binding in the same model, where a novel pairing-glue scheme beyond the BCS realm is discovered. Specifically, we show that, in addition to spin pairing due to superexchang…
We study the effects of electron doping in Mott insulators containing d^4 ions such as Ru4+, Os4+, Rh5+, and Ir5+ with J=0 singlet ground state. Depending on the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, the undoped systems are either nonmagnetic or host an unusual, excitonic magnetism arising from a condensation of the excited J=1 triplet states of t_2g^4. We find that the interaction between J-excitons and doped carriers strongly supports ferromagnetism, converting both the nonmagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases of the parent insulator into a ferromagnetic metal, and further to a nonmagnetic me…
We define a suitable quantity $Z_c$ that measures the pairing strength of two electrons added to the ground state wave function by means of the anomalous part of the one-particle Green's function. $Z_c$ discriminates between systems described by one-electron states, like ordinary metals and band insulators, for which $Z_c=0$, and systems where the single particle picture does not hold, like superconductors and resonating valence bond insulators, for which $Z_c \ne 0$. By using a numerically exact projection technique for the Hubbard model at $U/t=4$, a finite value of $Z_c$, with d-wave symmet…
We discuss photogenerated midgap states of a one-dimensional (1D) dimerized Mott insulator, potassium-tetracyanoquinodimethane (K-TCNQ). Two types of phonon modes are taken into account: intermolecular and intramolecular vibrations. We treat these phonon modes adiabatically and analyze a theoretical model by using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Our numerical results demonstrate that the intermolecular lattice distortion is necessary to reproduce the photoinduced midgap absorption in K-TCNQ. We find two types of midgap states. One is a usual polaronic state characterized by a …
Symmetry of photoexcited states with two photoinduced carriers in two-dimensional Mott insulators is examined by applying the numerically exact diagonalization method to finite-size clusters of a half-filled Hubbard model in the strong-coupling limit. The symmetry of minimum-energy bound state is found to be s-wave, which is different from a d_{x^2-y^2} wave of a two-hole pair in doped Mott insulators. We demonstrate that the difference is originated from an exchange of fermions due to the motion of a doubly occupied site. Correspondingly large-shift Raman scattering across the Mott gap exhibi…
Motivated by the recently experimental reported signatures of the tunable Mott insulating state and superconductivity in an ABC graphene trilayer superlattice, we investigate the charge compressibility, the spin correlation, and the superconducting instability within the Hubbard model on a three-layer honeycomb lattice. It is found that an antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator emerges beyond a critical $U_c$ at half-filling, and the electronic correlation drives a $d+id$ superconducting pairing to be dominant over other pairing patterns in a wide doped region. The effective pairing inte…
We investigate the optical properties of one-dimensional (1D) dimerized Mott insulators using the 1D dimerized extended Hubbard model. Numerical calculations and a perturbative analysis from the decoupled-dimer limit clarify that there are three relevant classes of charge-transfer (CT) states generated by photoexcitation: interdimer CT unbound states, interdimer CT exciton states, and intradimer CT exciton states. This classification is applied to understanding the optical properties of an organic molecular material, 1,3,5-trithia-2,4,6-triazapentalenyl (TTTA), which is known for its photoindu…
The terahertz (THz) response in 10-100 cm^-1 was investigated in an organic dimer-Mott (DM) insulator kappa-(ET)_2Cu_2(CN)_3 that exhibits a relaxor-like dielectric anomaly. 30 cm^-1 band in the optical conductivity was attributable to collective excitation of the intra-dimer electric dipoles which are formed by an electron correlation. We succeeded in observing photoinduced enhancement of this 30 cm^-1 band, reflecting the growth of the electric dipole cluster in the DM phase. Such optical responses in kappa-(ET)_2Cu_2(CN)_3 reflect instability near the boundary between the DM-ferroelectric c…
We use time-evolution techniques for (infinite) matrix-product-states to calculate, directly in the thermodynamic limit, the time-dependent photoemission spectra and dynamic structure factors of the half-filled Hubbard chain after pulse irradiation. These quantities exhibit clear signatures of the photoinduced phase transition from insulator to metal that occurs because of the formation of so-called $η$ pairs. In addition, the spin dynamic structure factor loses spectral weight in the whole momentum space, reflecting the suppression of antiferromagnetic correlations due to the buildup of $η$-p…
We investigate the optical conductivity of photogenerated solitons in quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged binuclear transition-metal MMX complexes with particular emphasis on a comparison among the three distinct groups: A_4_[Pt_2_(P_2_O_5_H_2_)_4_X]nH_2_O (X=Cl,Br,I; A=Na,K,NH_4_,...), Pt_2_(RCS_2_)_4_I (R=C_n_H_2n+1_) and Ni_2_(CH_3_CS_2_)_4_I, which exhibit a mixed-valent ground state with the X sublattice dimerized, that with the M_2_ sublattice dimerized and a Mott-Hubbard magnetic ground state, respectively. Soliton-induced absorption spectra for A_4_[Pt_2_(P_2_O_5_H_2_)_4_X]nH_2_O sho…
Mechanism of superconductivity (SC) in a purely interacting electron system has been one of the most challenging issues in condensed matter physics. In the BCS theory, the Landau's Fermi liquid is a normal state against which an SC instability occurs once an \emph{additional} pairing force is added. We show that in the doped Mott insulator an \emph{intrinsic} SC ground state (specifically a Luther-Emery state in a finite-doping two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder) can be directly turned into a Fermi-gas-like state by merely switching off the hidden statistical sign structure via two schemes. It points to a…
Symmetry breaking and the emergence of order is one of the most fascinating phenomena in condensed matter physics. It leads to a plethora of intriguing ground states found in antiferromagnets, Mott insulators, superconductors, and density-wave systems. Exploiting states of matter far from equilibrium can provide even more striking routes to symmetry-lowered, ordered states. Here, we demonstrate for the case of elemental chromium that moderate ultrafast photo-excitation can transiently enhance the charge-density-wave (CDW) amplitude by up to 30% above its equilibrium value, while strong excitat…

Nonequilibrium dynamics in correlated materials has attracted attention due to the possibility of characterizing, tuning, and creating complex ordered states. To understand the photoinduced microscopic dynamics, especially the linkage under realistic pump conditions between transient states and remnant elementary excitations, we performed nonperturbative simulations of various time-resolved spectroscopies. We used the Mott antiferromagnetic insulator as a model platform. The transient dynamics of multi-particle excitations can be attributed to the interplay between Floquet virtual states and a…
Collective excitations contain rich information about photoinduced transient states in correlated systems. In a Mott insulator, charge degrees of freedom are frozen, but can be activated by photodoping. The energy-momentum distribution of the charge excitation spectrum reflects the propagation of charge degrees of freedom, and provides information about the interplay among various intertwined instabilities on the time scale set by the pump. To reveal charge excitations out of equilibrium, we simulate time-resolved x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering using a Hubbard model. …
Pairing in superconductors occurs in a variety of channels and can be produced by various mechanisms. Here, we show that, in the presence of strong correlations, a novel singlet-pair superconducting phase can occur in ladder geometries with the fermions in the pairs residing on different sides of a Mott insulating stripe. The antiferromagnet correlations in the Mott stripe provide the pairing "glue" in such a phase. We study, using the density matrix renormalization group method, the ground state of four-leg t-J ladders with Mott insulating stripes in the inner two legs. Pairing and supercondu…
Ultrafast dynamics across the photoinduced three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal (IM) transition in CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ was investigated by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. The structural coherence of the low-$T$ broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshold excitation fluence of $F_{\mathrm{c}}\approx3$ mJ/cm$^{2}$ (at 1.55-eV photon energy) resulting in a structurally inhomogeneous transient state which persists for several-tens of picoseconds before reverting to the original low-$T$ state. The el…
We study the photoinduced ultrafast dynamics in relativistic Mott insulators, i.e., Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling. For this purpose, we consider a minimal one-band Hubbard model on lattices with square and triangular symmetries, as relevant for layered transition metal compounds such as Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Depending on the lattice and the spin-orbit coupling, the systems have canted antiferromagnetic or $120^\circ$ order. They are excited by simulating a short laser pulse, and the dynamics is solved using nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. The pulse generates hot carriers…
We model a quantum dot-array (with one electron per dot) comprising of two (or more than two) coupled dots by an extended Hubbard Hamiltonian to investigate the role played by the inter-dot tunneling amplitude td, together with intra-dot (U) and inter-dot(U1) coulomb repulsions, in the singlet / triplet bound state formation and evolution of the system from the Mott-insulator-like state to a correlated semi-metallic state via charge-bond-order route. In the presence of magnetic field, td is complex due to the appearance of Peierls phase factor. We introduce a short-ranged inter-dot capacitive …
The issues of single particle coherence and its interplay with singlet pairing are studied within the slave boson gauge theory of a doped Mott insulator. Prior work by one of us (T. Senthil, arXiv:0804.1555) showed that the coherence scale below which Landau quasiparticles emerge is parametrically lower than that identified in the slave boson mean field theory. Here we study the resulting new non-fermi liquid intermediate temperature regime characterized by a single particle scattering rate that is linear in temperature ($T$). In the presence of a d-wave pair amplitude this leads to a pseudoga…
We explore the Mott insulating state of single-band bosonic pairing Hamiltonians using analytical approaches and large scale density matrix renormalization group calculations. We focus on the second Mott lobe which exhibits a magnetic quantum phase transition in the Ising universality class. We use this feature to discuss the behavior of a range of physical observables within the framework of the 1D quantum Ising model and the strongly anisotropic Heisenberg model. This includes the properties of local expectation values and correlation functions both at and away from criticality. Depending on…
We consider a modification of the one-dimensional Hubbard model by including an external pairing potential. Guided by analytic bosonization results, we quantitatively determine the grand-canonical zero-temperature phase diagram using both finite and infinite density matrix renormalization group algorithm based on the formalism of matrix product states and matrix product operator, respectively. By computing various local quantities as well as the half-system entanglement, we are able to distinguish between Mott, metallic and superconducting phases. We point out the compressible nature of the Mo…
By bosonizing the electronic t-J model exactly on any two-dimensional (2D) lattices, and integrating out the gauge fluctuations combined to slave particles beyond mean fields, we get a theory in terms of physical Cooper pair and spin condensates. In the sense of mutual Berry phase they turns out to be dual to each other. The mutual-duality is the missing key in the resonant-valance-bond idea\cite{rvb} to work as a paradigm of doped 2D Mott insulators. We argue that essential aspects of high-$T_c$ phenomenology find natural solutions in the theory. We also provide interesting predictions for sy…
We report strong instantaneous photoinduced absorption (PA) in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator ${\rm Sr_2CuO_3}$ in the IR spectral region. The observed PA is to an even-parity two-photon state that occurs immediately above the absorption edge. Theoretical calculations based on a two-band extended Hubbard model explains the experimental features and indicates that the strong two-photon absorption is due to a very large dipole-coupling between nearly degenerate one- and two-photon states. Room temperature picosecond recovery of the optical transparency suggests the strong potential of …
We show that a metastable $η$--pairing superconducting phase can be induced by photodoping doublons and holes into a strongly repulsive fermionic Hubbard model. The doublon-hole condensate originates from an intrinsic doublon-hole exchange interaction and does not rely on the symmetry of the half-filled Hubbard model. It extends over a wide range of doublon densities and effective temperatures. Different non-equilibrium protocols to realize this state are proposed and numerically tested. We also study the optical conductivity in the superconducting phase, which exhibits ideal metallic behavior…
We study the effects of doping a Mott insulator on the honeycomb lattice where spins interact via direction dependent Kitaev couplings J_K, and weak antiferromagnetic Heisenberg couplings J. This model is known to have a spin liquid ground state and may potentially be realized in correlated insulators with strong spin orbit coupling. The effect of hole doping is studied within a t-J-J_K model, treated using the SU(2) slave boson formulation, which correctly captures the parent spin liquid. We find superconductor ground states with spin triplet pairing that spontaneously break time reversal sym…
We investigate the potential existence of a superconducting phase in $5d$ Mott insulators with an eye to hole doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Using a mean-field method, a mixed singlet-triplet superconductivity, $d + p$, is observed due to the antisymmetric exchange originating from a quasi-spin-orbit-coupling. Our calculation on ribbon geometry shows possible existence of the topologically protected edge states, because of nodal structure of the superconducting gap. These edge modes are spin polarized and emerge as zero-energy flat bands, supporting a symmetry protected Majorana states, verified by eval…
We propose one possible mechanism for an anomalous metallic phase appearing frequently in two spatial dimensions, that is, local pairing fluctuations. Introducing a pair-rotor representation to decompose bare electrons into collective pairing excitations and renormalized electrons, we derive an SU(2) gauge theory of the Hubbard model as an extended version of its U(1) gauge theory\cite{Florens,LeeLee} to allow only local density fluctuations. Since our effective SU(2) gauge theory admits two kinds of collective bosons corresponding to pair excitations and density fluctuations respectively, an …
Static electrical and magnetic properties of single crystal BaVS_3 were measured over the structural (T_S=240K), metal-insulator (T_MI=69K), and suspected orbital ordering (T_X=30K) transitions. The resistivity is almost isotropic both in the metallic and insulating states. An anomaly in the magnetic anisotropy at T_X signals a phase transition to an ordered low-T state. The results are interpreted in terms of orbital ordering and spin pairing within the lowest crystal field quasi-doublet. The disordered insulator at T_X<T<T_MI is described as a classical liquid of non-magnetic pairs.
The spinel-structure CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ compound displays a rather unusual orbitally-driven three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal transition. The low-T symmetry-broken insulating state is especially interesting due to the existence of a metastable irradiation-induced disordered weakly conducting state. Here we study intense femtosecond optical pulse irradiation effects by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. We show that the structural coherence of the low-T broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshol…
Ultrafast laser pulses can redistribute charges in Mott insulators on extremely short time scales, leading to the fast generation of photocarriers. It has recently been demonstrated that these photocarriers can form a novel $η$--paired condensate at low temperatures, featuring a staggered superconducting pairing field. In this conference paper, we discuss the origin of the $η$--paired hidden phase and its optical response which may be detected in a pump-probe experiment. The hidden phase may be relevant for possible light-induced superconductivity in Mott insulators.
Asymmetric two-leg Hubbard ladders with different on-site interactions $U_y$ and hoppings $t_y$ on each leg are investigated using the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalizations. The pairing found in symmetric ladders is robust against the introduction of the leg asymmetry. When studying pairing, one-band Hubbard ladder models are better described as one-dimensional correlated two-band models than as sublattices of higher dimensional systems. The asymmetric Hubbard ladder provides us with a simple model for studying pairing in the crossover regime between charge tra…
Interacting many-body systems combining confined and extended dimensions, such as ladders and few layer systems are characterized by enhanced quantum fluctuations, which often result in interesting collective properties. Recently two-dimensional bilayer systems, such as twisted bilayer graphene or ultracold atoms, have sparked a lot of interest because they can host rich phase diagrams, including unconventional superconductivity. Here we present a theoretical proposal for realizing high temperature pairing of fermions in a class of bilayer Hubbard models. We introduce a general, highly efficie…
