We study the finite-frequency inter-band transition peak in the optical conductivity of a heavy fermion system close to a Kondo breakdown quantum critical point, where the lattice Kondo temperature vanishes. As the system approaches the phase transition from the heavy Fermi liquid side, we find a new cross-over regime where the peak position is related to, but is not directly proportional to, the lattice Kondo scale. In particular, the position of the peak moves to lower energies, but remains finite at the critical point. On the other hand, the peak value changes non-monotonically and eventually the peak disappears at the quantum critical point, indicating the decoupling of the narrow band of f-electrons from the conduction band. We argue that these are unique signatures of a Kondo breakdown transition, and therefore can be useful to distinguish it experimentally from a spin density wave instability.
The breakdown of the lattice Kondo effect in local-moment metals can lead to non-trivial forms of quantum criticality and a variety of non-Fermi-liquid phases. Given indications that Kondo-breakdown transitions involve criticality not only in the spin but also in the charge sector, we investigate the interplay of Kondo breakdown and strong valence fluctuations in generalized Anderson lattice models. We employ a parton mean-field theory to describe the transitions between deconfined fractionalized Fermi liquids and various confined phases. We find that rapid valence changes near Kondo breakdown…
Motivated by the observation of light surface states in SmB6, we examine the effects of surface Kondo breakdown in topological Kondo insulators. We present both numerical and analytic results which show that the decoupling of the localized moments at the surface disturbs the compensation between light and heavy electrons and dopes the Dirac cone. Dispersion of these uncompensated surface states are dominated by inter-site hopping, which leads to a much lighter quasiparticles. These surface states are also highly durable against the effects of surface magnetism and decreasing thickness of the s…
We propose that the thermoelectric power distinguishes two competing scenarios for quantum phase transitions in heavy fermions : the spin-density-wave (SDW) theory and breakdown of the Kondo effect. In the Kondo breakdown scenario, the Seebeck coefficient turns out to collapse from the temperature scale $E^{*}$, associated with quantum fluctuations of the Fermi surface reconfiguration. This feature differs radically from the physics of the SDW theory, where no reconstruction of the Fermi surface occurs, and can be considered as the hallmark of the Kondo breakdown theory. We test these ideas, u…
The breakdown of the Kondo effect may be the origin of the anomalous properties of the heavy-fermion compounds at low temperatures. We study the dynamics of one impurity embedded in an antiferromagnetic host at the quantum critical point and show that the impurity is not screened and develops a power law correlation function. This suggests that the breakdown of the Kondo effect can simply be a consequence of the system's proximity to the quantum critical point.
The continuous quantum phase transition and the nature of quantum critical point (QCP) in a modified Kondo lattice model with Ising anisotropic exchange interactions is studied within the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. We investigate the effect of quantum fluctuations on critical Kondo destruction QCP, by probing static and dynamic properties of the magnetic order and the Kondo effect. In particular, we identify that local Kondo physics itself becomes critical at the magnetic phase transition point, providing unbiased evidences for local quantum criticality between two insulat…
We consider a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled via a Kondo interaction to two-dimensional Dirac fermions. The Kondo interaction is irrelevant at the \textit{decoupled} fixed-point, leading to the existence of a Kondo-breakdown phase and a Kondo-breakdown critical point separating such a phase from a heavy Fermi liquid. We reach this conclusion on the basis of a renormalization group analysis, large-N calculations as well as extensive auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We extract quantities such as the zero-bias tunneling conductance which will be relevant to future experiments i…
The unconventional critical behavior near magnetic quantum phase transitions in various heavy-fermion metals, apparently inconsistent with the standard spin-density-wave scenario, has triggered proposals on the breakdown of the Kondo effect at the critical point. Here we investigate, within one specific scenario, the fate of such a zero-temperature transition upon coupling of the electronic to lattice degrees of freedom. We study a Kondo-Heisenberg model with volume-dependent Kondo coupling -- this model displays both Kondo volume collapse and Kondo-breakdown transitions, as well as Lifshitz t…
We show that the scenario of multi-scale Kondo breakdown quantum critical point (QCP) gives rise to a divergent Grüneisen ratio with an anomalous exponent 0.7. In particular, we fit the experimental data of $YbRh_{2}(Si_{0.95}Ge_{0.05})_{2}$ for specific heat, thermal expansion, and Grüneisen ratio based on our simple analytic expressions. A reasonable agreement between the experiment and theory is found for the temperature range between 0.4 K and 10 K. We discuss how the Grüneisen ratio is a key measurement to discriminate between the Kondo breakdown and spin-density wave theories.
We study both the electrical and thermal transport near the heavy-fermion quantum critical point (QCP), identified with the breakdown of the Kondo effect as an orbital selective Mott transition. We show that the contribution to the electrical conductivity comes mainly from conduction electrons while the thermal conductivity is given by both conduction electrons and localized fermions (spinons), scattered with dynamical exponent $z = 3$. This scattering mechanism gives rise to a quasi-linear temperature dependence of the electrical and thermal resistivity. The characteristic feature of the Kond…
We use an estimator of quantum criticality based on the entanglement entropy to discuss the ground state properties of the 1D anisotropic Kondo necklace model. We found that the T=0 phase diagram of the model is described by a critical line separating an antiferromagnetic phase from a Kondo singlet state. Moreover we calculate the conformal anomaly on the critical line and obtained that c tends to 0.5 as the thermodynamic limit is reached. We conclude that these transitions belong to Ising universality class being, therefore, second order transitions instead of infinite order as claimed before…
The Kondo breakdown scenario has been claimed to allow the $T$-linear resistivity in the vicinity of the Kondo breakdown quantum critical point, two cornerstones of which are the dynamical exponent $z = 3$ quantum criticality for hybridization fluctuations in three dimensions and irrelevance of vertex corrections for transport due to the presence of localized electrons. We revisit the issue of vertex corrections in electrical transport coefficients. Assuming that two kinds of bosonic degrees of freedom, hybridization excitations and gauge fluctuations, are in equilibrium, we derive coupled qua…
Considerable efforts have been made in recent years to theoretically understand quantum phase transitions in Kondo lattice systems. A particular focus is on Kondo destruction, which leads to quantum criticality that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. This unconventional quantum criticality has provided an understanding of the unusual dynamical scaling observed experimentally. It has also predicted a sudden jump of the Fermi surface and an extra (Kondo destruction) energy scale, both of which have been verified by systematic experiments. Considerations of Kondo de…
The effects of reduced dimensions and the interfaces on antiferromagnetic quantum criticality are studied in epitaxial Kondo superlattices, with alternating $n$ layers of heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_5$ and 7 layers of normal metal YbRhIn$_5$. As $n$ is reduced, the Kondo coherence temperature is suppressed due to the reduction of effective Kondo screening. The Néel temperature is gradually suppressed as $n$ decreases and the quasiparticle mass is strongly enhanced, implying dimensional control toward quantum criticality. Magnetotransport measurements reveal that a quantum critical po…
Quantum criticality beyond the Landau paradigm represents a fundamental problem in condensed matter and statistical physics. Heavy fermion systems with multipolar degrees of freedom can play an important role in the search for its universal description. We consider a Kondo lattice model with both spin and quadrupole degrees of freedom, which we show to exhibit an antiferroquadrupolar phase. Using a field theoretical representation of the model, we find that Kondo couplings are exactly marginal in the renormalization group sense in this phase. This contrasts with the relevant nature of the Kond…
We show within the slave boson technique, that the Anderson lattice model exhibits a Kondo breakdown quantum critical point (KB-QCP) where the hybridization goes to zero at zero temper- ature. At this fixed point, the f-electrons experience as well a selective Mott transition separating a local-moment phase from a Kondo-screened phase. The presence of a multi-scale QCP in the An- derson lattice in the absence of magnetism is discussed in the context of heavy fermion compounds. This study is the first evidence for a selective Mott transition in the Anderson lattice.
Metallic quantum criticality often develops in strongly correlated systems with local effective degrees of freedom. In this work, we consider an Anderson lattice model with SU(2) symmetry. The model is treated by the extended dynamical mean-field theory (EDMFT) in combination with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. We demonstrate a continuous quantum phase transition, establish the ensuing quantum critical point to be of a Kondo-destruction type, and determine the anomalous scaling properties. We connect the continuous nature of the transition to a dynamical Kondo effect, which we c…
Motivated by recent Hall-effect experiment in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, we study ground state properties of a Kondo lattice model in a two-dimensional square lattice using variational Monte Carlo method. We show that there are two types of phase transition, antiferromagnetic transition and topological one (Fermi surface reconstruction). In a wide region of parameters, these two transitions occur simultaneously without the breakdown of Kondo screening, accompanied by a discontinuous change of the Hall coefficient. This result is consistent with the experiment and gives a novel theoretical picture for the…
We investigate the continuous quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy fermion liquid based on the Kondo lattice model in two dimensions. We propose that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and conduction electrons fractionalize into neutral bosonic spinons and charged spinless fermions at the quantum critical point. This deconfined quantum criticality leads us to establish a critical field theory in terms of the fractionalized fields interacting via emergent U(1) gauge fields. The critical field theory not only predicts non-Fermi liquid physics near the quantum crit…
We consider Dirac electrons on the honeycomb lattice Kondo coupled to spin-1/2 degrees of freedom on the kagome lattice. The interactions between the spins are chosen along the lines of the Balents-Fisher-Girvin model that is known to host a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid and a ferromagnetic phase. The model is amenable to sign free auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. While in the ferromagnetic phase the Dirac electrons acquire a gap, they remain massless in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid phase due to the breakdown of Kondo screening. Since our model has an odd number of spins per uni…
One of the challenges in strongly correlated electron systems, is to understand the anomalous electronic behavior that develops at an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP), a phenomenon that has been extensively studied in heavy fermion materials. Current theories have focused on the critical spin fluctuations and associated break-down of the Kondo effect. Here we argue that the abrupt change in Fermi surface volume that accompanies heavy fermion criticality leads to critical charge fluctuations. Using a model one dimensional Kondo lattice in which each moment is connected to a separa…
Recent studies of heavy-fermion systems with tunable quantum fluctuations have focused on a variety of zero-temperature phase transitions that involve not only the onset of magnetic order but also the destruction of Kondo entanglement. Motivated by these developments, we investigate the effect of enhanced quantum fluctuations induced by a transverse magnetic field in an Ising-anisotropic Kondo lattice model, solved within an extended dynamical mean field theory using the numerical renormalization group. A line of locally critical points describes a direct transition from a Kondo-screened param…
We show that the inclusion of nonlocal correlation effects in a variational wave function for the ground state of a topological Anderson lattice Hamiltonian is capable of describing both topologically trivial insulating phases and nontrivial ones characterized by an indirect gap, as well as its closure at the transition into a metallic phase. The method, though applied to an oversimplified model, thus captures the metallic and insulating states that are indeed observed in a variety of Kondo semiconductors, while accounting for topologically nontrivial band structures.
The observation of quantum criticality in diverse classes of strongly correlated electron systems has been instrumental in establishing ordering principles, discovering new phases, and identifying the relevant degrees of freedom and interactions. At focus so far have been insulators and metals. Semimetals, which are of great current interest as candidate phases with nontrivial topology, are much less explored in experiments. Here we study the Kondo semimetal CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The power-law divergence of the m…
The easily tuned balance among competing interactions in Kondo-lattice metals allows access to a zero-temperature, continuous transition between magnetically ordered and disordered phases, a quantum-critical point (QCP). Indeed, these highly correlated electron materials are prototypes for discovering and exploring quantum-critical states. Theoretical models proposed to account for the strange thermodynamic and electrical transport properties that emerge around the QCP of a Kondo lattice assume the presence of an indefinitely large number of itinerant charge carriers. Here, we report a systema…
We study the deconfined quantum critical point of the Kondo-Heisenberg lattice in three dimensions using a fermionic representation for the localized spins. The mean-field phase diagram exhibits a zero temperature quantum critical point separating a spin liquid phase where the hybridization vanishes and a Kondo phase where it does not. Two solutions can be stabilized in the Kondo phase, namely a uniform hybridization when the band masses of the conduction electrons and the spinons have the same sign, and a modulated one when they have opposite sign. For the uniform case, we show that above a v…
We report that nonmagnetic heavy-fermion (HF) iron oxypnictide CeFePO with two-dimensional XY-type anisotropy shows a metamagnetic behavior at the metamagnetic field H_M \simeq 4 T perpendicular to the c-axis and that a critical behavior is observed around H_M. Although the magnetic character is entirely different from that in other Ce-based HF metamagnets, H_M in these metamagnets is linearly proportional to the inverse of the effective mass, or to the temperature where the susceptibility shows a peak. This finding suggests that H_M is a magnetic field breaking the local Kondo singlet, and th…
We investigate the role of quantum coherence in tunneling conductance, where quantum criticality turns out to suppress Fano resonance. Based on the nonequilibrium noncrossing approximation, we show that the linear tunneling conductance exhibits weak Fano line-shape with sharp cusp at zero energy in the multichannel Kondo effect, resulting from incoherence associated with quantum criticality of impurity dynamics. In particular, shift of the peak position in the Fano resonance is predicted not to occur for the multichannel Kondo effect, distinguished from the Fermi liquid theory in the single ch…
The phase diagram of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model contains an SU(2)-invariant Kondo-screened phase separated by a continuous quantum phase transition from a Kondo-destroyed local moment phase. We analyze the effect of the Berry phase term of the spin path integral on the quantum critical properties of this quantum impurity model. For a range of the power-law exponent characterizing the spectral density of the dissipative bosonic bath, neglecting the influence of the Berry phase term makes the fixed point Gaussian. For the same range of the spectral density exponent, incorporating the Berry phase…
We theoretically investigate the non-equilibrium quantum phase transition in a generic setup: the pseudogap Kondo model where a quantum dot couples to two-left (L) and right (R)-voltage-biased fermionic leads with power-law density of states (DOS) with respect to their Fermi levels μ_L/R, ρ_c,L(R) (ω) \propto |ω - μ_L(R) |r, and 0 < r < 1. In equilibrium (zero bias voltage) and for 0 < r < 1/2, with increasing Kondo correlations, in the presence of particle-hole symmetry this model exhibits a quantum phase transition from a unscreened local moment (LM) phase to the Kondo phase. Via a controlle…
We study the Kondo alloy model on a square lattice using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for Kondo substitution and disorder effects, together with static mean-field approximations. We computed and analyzed photoemission properties as a function of electronic filling $n_c$, Kondo impurity concentration $x$, and strength of Kondo temperature $T_K$. We provide a complete description of the Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) signals expected in the paramagnetic Kondo phases. By analyzing the Fermi surface, we observe the Lifshitz-like transition predicted previously for strong $…
Quantum impurity models are the prototypical examples of quantum many-body dynamics which manifests in their spectral and transport properties. Single channel Anderson(and Kondo model) leads to the Fermi liquid ground state in the strong coupling regime which corresponds to a stable infrared fixed point at which the quantum impurity gets completely screened by the conduction electrons. Quantum impurity models with non-trivial density of states exhibit quantum phase transition and this quantum criticality lies in the universality class of local quantum critical systems. In this paper, we report…
A quantum Monte Carlo simulation method has been developed and applied to study the critical behavior of a single Kondo impurity in a Luttinger liquid. This numerically exact method has no finite-size limitations and allows to simulate the whole temperature range. Focusing on the impurity magnetic susceptibility, we determine the scaling functions, in particular for temperatures well below the Kondo temperature. In the absence of elastic potential scattering, we find Fermi-liquid behavior for strong electron-electron interactions, g_c < 1/2, and anomalous power laws for 1/2<g_c < 1, where g_c …
Kondo insulators are predicted to undergo an insulator-to-metal transition under applied magnetic field, yet the extremely high fields required to date have prohibited a comprehensive investigation of the nature of this transition. Here we show that Ce3Bi4Pd3 provides an ideal platform for this investigation, owing to the unusually small magnetic field of B ~ 11 T required to overcome its Kondo insulating gap. Above Bc, we find a magnetic field-induced Fermi liquid state whose characteristic energy scale T_FL collapses near Bc in a manner indicative of a magnetic field-tuned quantum critical p…
We have studied the quantum phase transition between the antiferromagnetic and spin liquid phase for the two dimensional anisotropic Kondo-necklace model. The bond operator formalism has been implemented to transform the spin Hamiltonian to a bosonic one. We have used the Green's function approach including a hard core repulsion to find the low energy excitation spectrum of the model. The bosonic excitations become gapless at the quantum critical point where the phase transition from the Kondo singlet state to long range antiferromagnetic order takes place. We have studied the effect of both i…
We study the low energy states of the Kondo alloy model (KAM) as function of the magnetic impurity concentration per site, x, and the conduction electron average site occupation, nc. In previous works, two different Fermi liquid regimes had been identified at strong Kondo coupling JK, that may be separated by a transition at x=nc. Here, we analyze the KAM for finite JK on a Bethe lattice structure. First, using the mean-field coherent potential approximation (DMFT-CPA) which is exact at lattice coordination Z=infty, we show that the real part of the local potential scattering may be located ou…
Single-electron transistors attached to ferromagnetic leads can undergo a continuous quantum phase transition as their gate voltage is tuned. The corresponding quantum critical point separates a Fermi liquid phase from a non-Fermi liquid one. Here, we expound on the physical idea proposed earlier. The key physics is the critical destruction of the Kondo effect, which underlies a new class of quantum criticality that has been argued to apply to heavy fermion metals. Its manifestation in the transport properties is studied through an effective Bose-Fermi Kondo model; the bosonic bath, correspond…
We examine the exchange Hamiltonian for magnetic adatoms in graphene with localized inner shell states. On symmetry grounds, we predict the existence of a class of orbitals that lead to a distinct class of quantum critical points in graphene, where the Kondo temperature scales as $T_{K}\propto|J-J_{c}|^{1/3}$ near the critical coupling $J_{c}$, and the local spin is effectively screened by a \emph{super-ohmic} bath. For this class, the RKKY interaction decays spatially with a fast power law $\sim1/R^{7}$. Away from half filling, we show that the exchange coupling in graphene can be controlled …
The interaction between strong correlation and Berry curvature is an open territory of in the field of quantum materials. Here we report large anomalous Hall conductivity in a Kondo lattice ferromagnet USbTe which is dominated by intrinsic Berry curvature at low temperatures. However, the Berry curvature induced anomalous Hall effect does not follow the scaling relation derived from Fermi liquid theory. The onset of the Berry curvature contribution coincides with the Kondo coherent temperature. Combined with ARPES measurement and DMFT calculations, this strongly indicates that Berry curvature …
We consider a triple-quantum-dot (TQD) system composed by an interacting quantum dot connected to two effectively non-interacting dots, which in turn are both connected in parallel to metallic leads. As we show, this system can be mapped onto a single-impurity Anderson model with a non-trivial density of states. The TQD's transport properties are investigated under a continuous tuning of the non-interacting dots' energy-levels, employing the Numerical Renormalization Group technique. Interference between single and many-particle resonances splits the Kondo peak, fulfilling a generalized Friede…
A quantum critical point arises at a continuous transformation between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Studies in antiferromagnetic heavy fermion materials have revealed that quantum criticality has several classes, with an unconventional type that involves a critical destruction of the Kondo entanglement. In order to understand such varieties, it is important to extend the materials basis beyond the usual setting of intermetallic compounds. Here we show that a nickel oxypnictide, CeNiAsO, displays a heavy-fermion antiferromagnetic quantum critical point as a function of either …
We develop the quantum Boltzman equation approach for the Kondo breakdown quantum critical point, involved with two bands for conduction electrons and localized fermions. Particularly, the role of vertex corrections in transport is addressed, crucial for non-Fermi liquid transport of temperature linear dependence. Only one band of spinons may be considered for scattering with gauge fluctuations, and their associated vertex corrections are introduced in the usual way, where divergence of self-energy corrections is cancelled by that of vertex corrections, giving rise to the physically meaningful…
Unconventional quantum criticality in heavy-fermion systems has been extensively analyzed in terms of a critical destruction of the Kondo effect. Motivated by a recent demonstration of quantum criticality in a mixed-valent heavy-fermion system, β-YbAlB4, we study a particle-hole-asymmetric Anderson impurity model with a pseudogapped density of states. We demonstrate Kondo destruction at a mixed-valent quantum critical point, where a collapsing Kondo energy scale is accompanied by a singular charge-fluctuation spectrum. Both spin and charge responses scale with energy over temperature (ω/T) and…
Competition between the Kondo effect and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in the two-impurity Kondo problem can be phenomenologically described by the Rasul-Schlottmann spin model. We revisit this model from the quantum entanglement perspective by calculating both the inter-impurity entanglement and the local Kondo entanglement, the latter being the entanglement between a local magnetic impurity and its spatially nearby conduction electron. A groundstate phase diagram is derived and a discontinuous breakdown of the local Kondo entanglement is found at the singular point, associated co…

A multichannel Kondo model, where two or more equivalent but independent channels of electrons compete to screen a spin-1/2 impurity, shows overcompensation of the impurity spin, leading to the non-Fermi-liquid behavior in various thermodynamic and transport properties. However, when the channel symmetry is broken, an impurity quantum phase transition can occur at zero temperature. Identification of an order parameter describing the impurity quantum phase transition is very difficult since it is beyond the conventional Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson theory. By employing the natural orbitals renormaliz…
Heavy fermion metals provide a prototype setting to study quantum criticality. Experimentally, quantum critical points have been identified and studied in a growing list of heavy fermion compounds. Theoretically, Kondo destruction has provided a means to characterize a class of unconventional quantum critical points that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. Among the prominent evidence for such local quantum criticality have been measurements in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. A rapid crossover is observed at finite temperatures in the isothermal field dependence of the Hall coeff…
Antiferromagnetic heavy fermion metals close to their quantum critical points display a richness in their physical properties unanticipated by the traditional approach to quantum criticality, which describes the critical properties solely in terms of fluctuations of the order parameter. This has led to the question as to how the Kondo effect gets destroyed as the system undergoes a phase change. In one approach to the problem, Kondo lattice systems are studied through a self-consistent Bose-Fermi Kondo model within the Extended Dynamical Mean Field Theory. The quantum phase transition of the K…
We study the Kondo-Heisenberg model using a fermionic representation for the localized spins. The mean-field phase diagram exhibits a zero temperature quantum critical point separating a spin liquid phase where the f-conduction hybridization vanishes, and a Kondo phase where it does not. Two solutions can be stabilized in the Kondo phase, namely a uniform hybridization when the band masses of the conduction electrons and the f spinons have the same sign, and a modulated one when they have opposite sign. For the uniform case, we show that above a very small Fermi liquid temperature scale (~1 mK…
The long-thought charge Kondo effects have recently been experimentally realized in the quantum Hall regime. This experiment, supported by numerics, exemplifies the realization of two-channel Kondo state, a non-Fermi Liquid, and its crossover to the one-channel counterpart, a Fermi liquid. Scaling up such a platform, we find a hierarchy of non-Fermi Liquids and their tunable crossovers based on a renormalization group analysis. Utilizing results from a conformal field theory, we further examine the universal conductances of this strongly correlated system and their finite temperature scaling, …
We address the phenomenon of critical Kondo destruction in pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo quantum impurity models. These models describe a localized level coupled both to a fermionic bath having a density of states that vanishes like |ε|^r at the Fermi energy (ε=0) and, via one component of the impurity spin, to a bosonic bath having a sub-Ohmic spectral density proportional to |ω|^s. Each bath is capable by itself of suppressing the Kondo effect at a continuous quantum phase transition. We study the interplay between these two mechanisms for Kondo destruction using continuous-time qu…
We show that for the half-filled Kondo lattice model on the honeycomb lattice a Kondo breakdown occurs at small Kondo couplings $J_k$ within the magnetically ordered phase. Our conclusions are based on auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the so-called composite fermion spectral function. Within a U(1) gauge theory formulation of the Kondo model, it becomes apparent that a Higgs mechanism dictates the weight of the resonance in the spectral function. For the honeycomb lattice we observe that for small $J_k$ the quasiparticle pole gives way to incoherent spectral weight but it rem…
The topology and spin-orbital polarization of two-dimensional (2D) surface electronic states have been extensively studied in this decade. One major interest in them is their close relationship with the parities of the bulk (3D) electronic states. In this context, the surface is often regarded as a simple truncation of the bulk crystal. Here we show breakdown of the bulk-related in-plane rotation symmetry in the topological surface states (TSSs) of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) performed on the vicinal SmB$_6$(001)-$p$(2$\times$2) surface showed…
We report an angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) study of $β$-YbAlB$_4$, which is known to harbor unconventional quantum criticality (QC) without any tuning. We directly observe a quasiparticle peak (QP), emerging from hybridization, characterized by a binding energy and an onset of coherence both at about 4 meV. This value conforms with a previously observed reduced Kondo scale at about 40 K. Consistency with an earlier study of carriers in $β$-YbAlB$_4$ via the Hall effect strongly suggests that this QP is responsible for the QC in $β$-YbAlB$_4$. A comparison with the sister polymorph $α$-Y…
