We consider a homogeneous fibration $G/L \to G/K$, with symmetric fiber and base, where $G$ is a compact connected semisimple Lie group and $L$ has maximal rank in $G$. We suppose the base space $G/K$ is isotropy irreducible and the fiber $K/L$ is simply connected. We investigate the existence of $G$-invariant Einstein metrics on $G/L$ such that the natural projection onto $G/K$ is a Riemannian submersion with totally geodesic fibers. These spaces are divided in two types: the fiber $K/L$ is isotropy irreducible or is the product of two irreducible symmetric spaces. We classify all the $G$-invariant Einstein metrics with totally geodesic fibers for the first type. For the second type, we classify all these metrics when $G$ is an exceptional Lie group. If $G$ is a classical Lie group we classify all such metrics which are the orthogonal sum of the normal metrics on the fiber and on the base or such that the restriction to the fiber is also Einstein.
In this work we study the existence of homogeneous Einstein metrics on the total space of homogeneous fibrations such that the fibers are totally geodesic manifolds. We obtain the Ricci curvature of an invariant metric with totally geodesic fibers and some necessary conditions for such a metric to be Einstein in terms of Casimir operators. Some particular cases are studied, for instance, for normal base or fiber, symmetric fiber, Einstein base or fiber, for which the Einstein equations are manageable. We show the existence of new invariant Einstein metrics on homogeneous bisymmetric fibrations…
A fibration of a Riemannian manifold is fiberwise homogeneous if there are isometries of the manifold onto itself, taking any given fiber to any other one, and preserving fibers. Examples are fibrations of Euclidean n-space by parallel n-planes, and the Hopf fibrations of the round n-sphere by great n-spheres. In this paper, we describe all the fiberwise homogeneous fibrations of Euclidean and hyperbolic 3-space by geodesics. Our main result is that, up to fiber-preserving isometries, there is precisely a one-parameter family of such fibrations of Euclidean 3-space, and a two-parameter family …
Heinz Hopf's famous fibrations of the 2n+1-sphere by great circles, the 4n+3-sphere by great 3-spheres, and the 15-sphere by great 7-spheres have a number of interesting properties. Besides providing the first examples of homotopically nontrivial maps from one sphere to another sphere of lower dimension, they all share two striking features: (1) Their fibers are parallel, in the sense that any two fibers are a constant distance apart, and (2) The fibrations are highly symmetric. For example, there is a fiber-preserving isometry of each total space which takes any given fiber to any other one. …
In this paper, we describe a new surprising example of a fibration of the Clifford torus S3 x S3 in the 7-sphere by great 3-spheres, which is fiberwise homogeneous but whose fibers are not parallel to one another. In particular it is not part of a Hopf fibration. A fibration is fiberwise homogeneous when for any two fibers there is an isometry of the total space taking fibers to fibers and taking the first given fiber to the second one. We also describe in detail the geometry of this surprising fibration and how it differs from the Hopf fibration.
We study the existence of projectable $G$-invariant Einstein metrics on the total space of $G$-equivariant fibrations $M=G/L\to G/K$, for a compact connected semisimple Lie group $G$. We obtain necessary conditions for the existence of such Einstein metrics in terms of appropriate Casimir operators, which is a generalization of the result by Wang and Ziller about Einstein normal metrics. We describe binormal Einstein metrics which are the orthogonal sum of the normal metrics on the fiber and on the base. The special case when the restriction to the fiber and the projection to the base are also…
We present a classification of the complete, simply connected, contact metric $(κ,μ)$-spaces as homogeneous contact metric manifolds, by studying the base space of their canonical fibration. According to the value of the Boeckx invariant, it turns out that the base is a complexification or a para-complexification of a sphere or of a hyperbolic space. In particular, we obtain a new homogeneous representation of the contact metric $(κ,μ)$-spaces with Boeckx invariant less than $-1$.
We consider a class of compact homogeneous CR manifolds, that we call $\mathfrak n$-reductive, which includes the orbits of minimal dimension of a compact Lie group $K_0$ in an algebraic homogeneous variety of its complexification $K$. For these manifolds we define canonical equivariant fibrations onto complex flag manifolds. The simplest example is the Hopf fibration $S^3\to\mathbb{CP}^1$. In general these fibrations are not $CR$ submersions, however they satisfy a weaker condition that we introduce here, namely they are CR-deployments.
We study the existence of three classes of Hermitian metrics on certain types of compact complex manifolds. More precisely, we consider balanced, SKT and astheno-Kähler metrics. We prove that the twistor spaces of compact hyperkähler and negative quaternionic-Kähler manifolds do not admit astheno-Kähler metrics. Then we provide examples of astheno-Kähler structures on toric bundles over Kähler manifolds. In particular, we find examples of compact complex non-Kähler manifolds which admit a balanced and an astheno-Kähler metrics, thus answering to a question in [52] (see also [24]). One of these…
We prove a general existence theorem for collapsed ancient solutions to the Ricci flow on compact homogeneous spaces and we show that they converge in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology, under a suitable rescaling, to an Einstein metric on the base of a torus fibration. This construction generalizes all previous known examples in the literature.
We show that a simply connected Riemannian homogeneous space M which admits a totally geodesic hypersurface F is isometric to either (a) the Riemannian product of a space of constant curvature and a homogeneous space, or (b) the warped product of the Euclidean space and a homogeneous space, or (c) the twisted product of the line and a homogeneous space (with the warping/twisting function given explicitly). In the first case, F is also a Riemannian product; in the last two cases, it is a leaf of a totally geodesic homogeneous fibration. Case (c) can alternatively be characterised by the fact th…
Let $M$ be a pseudo-Hermitian homogeneous space of finite volume. We show that $M$ is compact and the identity component $G$ of the group of holomorphic isometries of $M$ is compact. If $M$ is simply connected, then even the full group of holomorphic isometries is compact. These results stem from a careful analysis of the Tits fibration of $M$, which is shown to have a torus as its fiber. The proof builds on foundational results on the automorphisms groups of compact almost pseudo-Hermitian homogeneous spaces. It is known that a compact homogeneous pseudo-Kähler manifold splits as a product of…

The structure of nearly Kähler manifolds was studied by Gray in several papers. More recently, a relevant progress on the subject has been done by Nagy. Among other results, he proved that a strict and complete nearly Kähler manifold is locally a Riemannian product of homogeneous nearly Kähler spaces, twistor spaces over quaternionic K{ähler manifolds and six-dimensional nearly Kähler manifolds, where the homogeneous nearly Kähler factors are also 3-symmetric spaces. In the present paper, using the lists of $3$-symmetric spaces given by Wolf & Gray, we display the exhaustive list of irreducibl…
We consider canonical fibrations and algebraic geometric structures on homogeneous CR manifolds, in connection with the notion of CR algebra. We give applications to the classifications of left invariant CR structures on semisimple Lie groups and of CR-symmetric structures on complete flag varieties.
Motivated by prominent problems like the Hilali conjecture Yamaguchi--Yokura recently proposed certain estimates on the relations of the dimensions of rational homotopy and rational cohomology groups of fibre, base and total spaces in a fibration of rationally elliptic spaces. In this article we prove these estimates in the category of formal elliptic spaces and, in general, whenever the total space in addition has positive Euler characteristic or has the rational homotopy type of a homogeneous manifold (respectively of a known example) of positive sectional curvature. Additionally, we provide…
A very important class of homogeneous Riemannian manifolds are the so-called normal homogeneous spaces, which have associated a canonical connection. In this work we obtain geometrically the (connected component of the) group of affine transformations with respect to the canonical connection for a normal homogeneous space. The naturally reductive case is also treated. This completes the geometric calculation of the isometry group of naturally reductive spaces. In addition, we prove that for normal homogeneous spaces the set of fixed points of the full isotropy is a torus. As an application of …
If $X$ is a connected complex manifold with $d_X = 2$ that admits the holomorphic and transitive action of a (connected) Lie group $G$, then the action extends to an action of the complexification $\hat{G}$ of $G$ on $X$ except when either the unit disk or else a strictly pseudoconcave homogeneous complex manifold is involved as base or fiber in some homogeneous fibration of $X$.
Naturally reductive spaces, in general, can be seen as an adequate generalization of Riemannian symmetric spaces. Nevertheless, there are some that are closer to symmetric spaces than others. On the one hand, there is the series of Hopf fibrations over complex space forms, including the Heisenberg groups with their metrics of type H. On the other hand, there exist certain naturally reductive spaces in dimensions six and seven whose torsion forms have a distinguished algebraic property. All these spaces generalize geometric or algebraic properties of $3$--dimensional naturally reductive spaces …
We consider invariant Riemannian metrics on compact homogeneous spaces $G/H$ where an intermediate subgroup $K$ between $G$ and $H$ exists. In this case, the homogeneous space $G/H$ is the total space of a Riemannian submersion. The metrics constructed by shrinking the fibers in this way can be interpreted as metrics obtained from a Cheeger deformation and are thus well known to be nonnegatively curved. On the other hand, if the fibers are homothetically enlarged, it depends on the triple of groups $(H,K,G)$ whether nonnegative curvature is maintained for small deformations. Building on the wo…
We study riemannian coverings $φ: \widetilde{M} \to Γ\backslash \widetilde{M}$ where $\widetilde{M}$ is a normal homogeneous space $G/K_1$ fibered over another normal homogeneous space $M = G/K$ and $K$ is locally isomorphic to a nontrivial product $K_1\times K_2$. The most familiar such fibrations $π: \widetilde{M} \to M$ are the natural fibrations of Stieffel manifolds $SO(n_1 + n_2)/SO(n_1)$ over Grassmann manifolds $SO(n_1 + n_2)/[SO(n_1)\times SO(n_2)]$ and the twistor space bundles over quaternionic symmetric spaces (= quaternion-Kaehler symmetric spaces = Wolf spaces). The most familiar…
We study the motion of charged particle under a natural choice of electromagnetic field in a general class of compact homogeneous spaces. As a special case we describe the motion in homogeneous Riemannian spaces $(G/H,g)$, where $g$ is any deformation of a normal metric along the fibers of a homogeneous fibration $K/H\rightarrow G/H \rightarrow G/K$.

The basic setup consists of a complex flag manifold $Z=G/Q$ where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group and $Q$ is a parabolic subgroup, an open orbit $D = G_0(z) \subset Z$ where $G_0$ is a real form of $G$, and a $G_0$--homogeneous holomorphic vector bundle $\mathbb E \to D$. The topic here is the double fibration transform ${\cal P}: H^q(D;{\cal O}(\mathbb E)) \to H^0({\cal M}_D;{\cal O}(\mathbb E'))$ where $q$ is given by the geometry of $D$, ${\cal M}_D$ is the cycle space of $D$, and $\mathbb E' \to {\cal M}_D$ is a certain naturally derived holomorphic vector bundle. Schubert intersecti…
Let g_t be a family of constant scalar curvature metrics on the total space of a Riemannian submersion obtained by shrinking the fibers of an original metric g, so that the submersion collapses as t approaches 0 (i.e., the total space converges to the base in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense). We prove that, under certain conditions, there are at least 3 unit volume constant scalar curvature metrics in the conformal class [g_t] for infinitely many t's accumulating at 0. This holds, e.g., for homogeneous metrics g_t obtained via Cheeger deformation of homogeneous fibrations with fibers of positive sc…
Geodesic orbit spaces are those Riemannian homogeneous spaces (G/H,g) whose geodesics are orbits of one-parameter subgroups of G. We classify the simply connected geodesic orbit spaces where G is a compact Lie group of rank two. We prove that the only such spaces for which the metric g is not induced from a bi-invariant metric on G are certain spheres and projective spaces, endowed with metrics induced from Hopf fibrations.
It was conjectured, twenty years ago, the following result that would generalize the so-called rank rigidity theorem for homogeneous Euclidean submanifolds: let M^n, n>=2, be a full and irreducible homogeneous submanifold of the sphere $S^{N-1}\subset R^N$ and such that the normal holonomy group is not transitive (on the unit sphere of the normal space to the sphere). Then M^n must be an orbit of an irreducible s-representation (i.e. the isotropy representation of a semisimple Riemannian symmetric space). If n=2, then the normal holonomy is always transitive, unless M is a homogeneous isoparam…
We show Riemannian geometry could be studied by identifying the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}$ with a subbundle of the trivial bundle $\mathcal{M} \times \mathcal{E}$, obtained by embedding $\mathcal{M}$ differentiably in a Euclidean space $\mathcal{E}$. Given such an embedding, we can extend the metric tensor on $\mathcal{M}$ to a (positive-definite) operator-valued function acting on $\mathcal{E}$, giving us an embedded ambient structure. The formulas for the Christoffel symbols and Riemannian curvature in local coordinates have simple generalizations to this setup. Fo…
