We have explored the performance of two "dark fibers" of a commercial telecommunication fiber link for a remote comparison of optical clocks. The two fibers, linking the Leibniz University of Hanover (LUH) with the Physi-kalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig, are connected in Hanover to form a total fiber length of 146 km. At PTB the performance of an optical frequency standard operating at 456 THz was imprinted to a cw trans-fer laser at 194 THz, and its frequency was transmitted over the fiber. In order to detect and compensate phase noise related to the optical fiber link we have built a low-noise optical fiber interferometer and investigated noise sources that affect the overall performance of the optical link. The frequency stability at the remote end has been measured using the clock laser of PTB's Yb+ frequency standard operating at 344 THz. We show that the frequency of a frequency-stabilized fiber laser can be transmitted over a total fiber length of 146 km with a relative frequency uncertainty below 1E-19, and short term frequency instability given by the fractional Allan deviation of sy(t)=3.3E-15/(t/s).

Optical waveguide segments based on geometrically unbound photonic crystal fibers (PCF) designs could be exploited as building blocks to realize miniaturized complex devices which implement advanced photonic operations. Here, we show how to fabricate optical waveguide segments with PCF designs by direct high-resolution 3D printing and how the combination of these segments can realise complex photonic devices. We demonstrate the unprecedented precision and flexibility of our method by fabricating the first-ever fiber polarising beam splitter based on PCFs. The device was directly printed in one…
Dispersion engineering is essential to the performance of most modern optical systems including fiber-optic devices. Even though the chromatic dispersion of a meter-scale single-mode fiber used for endoscopic applications is negligible, optical lenses located on the fiber end face for optical focusing and imaging suffer from strong chromatic aberration. Here we present the design and nanoprinting of a 3D achromatic diffractive metalens on the end face of a single-mode fiber, capable of performing achromatic and polarization-insensitive focusing across the entire near-infrared telecommunication…

Fiber-based quantum networks require photons at telecommunications wavelengths to interconnect qubits separated by long distances. Trapped ions are leading candidates for quantum networking with high-fidelity two-qubit gates, long coherence times, and the ability to readily emit photons entangled with the ion's internal qubit states. However, trapped ions typically emit photons at wavelengths incompatible with telecommunications fiber. Here, we demonstrate frequency conversion of visible photons, emitted from the S-P dipole transition of a trapped Ba+ ion, into the telecommunications C-band. T…
Frequency dissemination in phase-stabilized optical fiber networks for metrological frequency comparisons and precision measurements are promising candidates to overcome the limitations imposed by satellite techniques. However, network constraints restrict the availability of dedicated channels in the commonly-used C-band. Here, we demonstrate the dissemination of an SI-traceable ultrastable optical frequency in the L-band over a 456 km fiber network with ring topology, in which telecommunication data traffic occupies the full C-band. We characterize the optical phase noise and evaluate a link…
A narrow linewidth laser operating at the telecommunications band combined with both fast and wide-band tuning features will have promising applications. Here, we demonstrate a single-mode (both transverse and longitude mode) continuous microlaser around 1535 nm based on a fiber Fabry-Pérot microcavity, which achieves wide-band tuning without mode hopping to 1.3 THz range and fast tuning rate to 60 kHz, yields a frequency scan rate of $1.6\times10^{17}$ Hz/s. Moreover, the linewidth of the laser is measured as narrow as 3.1 MHz. As the microlaser combines all these features into one fiber comp…

Fiber-based multi-wavelength lasers have a variety of important applications in telecommunication and meteorology. We experimentally study a fiber loop laser with an integrated Erbium doped fiber (EDF). The output optical spectrum is measured as a function of the EDF temperature. We find that below a critical temperature of about $10\unit{% K}$ the measured optical spectrum exhibits a sequence of narrow and unequally-spaced peaks. An intriguing connection between the peaks' wavelengths and the sequence of prime numbers is discussed. An hypothesis, which attributes the comb formation to intermo…
When multimode optical fibers are perturbed, the data that is transmitted through them is scrambled. This presents a major difficulty for many possible applications, such as multimode fiber-based telecommunication and endoscopy. To overcome this challenge, a deep learning approach that generalizes over mechanical perturbations is presented. Using this approach, successful reconstruction of the input images from intensity-only measurements of speckle patterns at the output of a 1.5 meter-long randomly perturbed multimode fiber is demonstrated. The model's success is explained by hidden correlat…
The optical fiber network has become a worldwide infrastructure. In addition to the basic functions in telecommunication, its sensing ability has attracted more and more attention. In this paper, we discuss the risk of household fiber being used for eavesdropping and demonstrate its performance in the lab. Using a 3-meter tail fiber in front of the household optical modem, voices of normal human speech can be eavesdropped by a laser interferometer and recovered 1.1 km away. The detection distance limit and system noise are analyzed quantitatively. We also give some practical ways to prevent ea…
Wave propagation on the surface of cylinders exhibits interferometric self imaging, much like the Talbot effect in the near-field diffraction at periodic gratings. We report the experimental observation of the cylindrical Talbot carpet in weakly-guiding ring-core fibers for classical light fields. We further show that the ring-core fiber acts as a high-order optical beamsplitter for single photons, whose output can be controlled by the relative phase between the input light fields. By also demonstrating high-quality two-photon interference between indistinguishable photons sent into the ring-c…
We report on the realization of a novel fiber-optic radio frequency (RF) transfer scheme with the bidirectional frequency division multiplexing (FDM) dissemination technique. Here, the proper bidirectional frequency map used in the forward and backward directions for suppressing the backscattering noise and ensuring the symmetry of the bidirectional transfer RF signals within one telecommunication channel. We experimentally demonstrated a 0.9 GHz signal transfer over a 120 km optical link with the relative frequency stabilities of 2.2E-14 at 1 s and 4.6E-17 at 20,000 s. The implementation of p…
Simultaneously sensing and resolving the position of measurands along an optical fiber enables numerous opportunities, especially for application in environments where massive sensor deployment is not feasible. Despite significant progress in techniques based on round-trip time-of-flight measurements, the need for bidirectional propagation imposes fundamental barriers to their deployment in fiber communication links containing non-reciprocal elements. In this work, we break this barrier by introducing a position-resolved sensing technique based on the interference of two weakly-coupled non-deg…
