We develop a trap-size scaling theory for trapped particle systems at quantum transitions. As a theoretical laboratory, we consider a quantum XY chain in an external transverse field acting as a trap for the spinless fermions of its quadratic Hamiltonian representation. We discuss trap-size scaling at the Mott insulator to superfluid transition in the Bose-Hubbard model. We present exact and accurate numerical results for the XY chain and for the low-density Mott transition in the hard-core limit of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. Our results are relevant for systems of cold atomic gases in optical lattices.
We revisit the coherent or delocalized to self-trapping transition in an interacting bosonic quantum fluid confined in a double well potential, in the context of full quantum calculations. We show that an $N$-particle Bose-Hubbard fluid reaches an stationary state through the two-body interactions. These stationary states are either delocalized or self-trapped in one of the wells, the former appearing as coherent oscillations in the mean-field approximation. By studying one- and two-body properties in the energy eigenstates and in a set of coherent states, we show that the delocalized to self-…
We consider collective dynamics of self-propelling particles in two dimensions. They can align themselves according to the direction of propulsion of their neighbours, together with a random perturbation (i.e. rotational fluctuation). They are also interacting with each other by a soft, isotropic, excluded-volume interaction. Particles are confined in a circular trap. The steepness of the trap is tuneable. Their average packing fraction and strength of rotational fluctuation are low. When the trap is steep, particles flock along its boundary. They form polar cluster that spreads over the bound…

Average trapping time (ATT) is central in the trapping problem since it is a key indicator characterizing the efficiency of the problem. Previous research has provided the scaling of a lower bound of the ATT for random walks in general networks with a deep trap. However, it is still not well understood in which networks this minimal scaling can be reached. Particularly, explicit quantitative results for ATT in such networks, even in a specific network, are lacking, in spite that such networks shed light on the design for optimal networks with the highest trapping efficiency. In this paper, we …
We discuss the effects of a trapping space-dependent potential on the critical dynamics of lattice gas models. Scaling arguments provide a dynamic trap-size scaling framework to describe how critical dynamics develops in the large trap-size limit. We present numerical results for the relaxational dynamics of a two-dimensional lattice gas (Ising) model in the presence of a harmonic trap, which support the dynamic trap-size scaling scenario.
We study self-avoiding walks on the square lattice restricted to a square box of side $L$ weighted by a length fugacity without restriction of their end points. This models a confined polymer in dilute solution. The model admits a phase transition between an `empty' phase, where the average length of walks are finite and the density inside large boxes goes to zero, to a `dense' phase, where there is a finite positive density. We prove various bounds on the free energy and develop a scaling theory for the phase transition based on the standard theory for unconstrained polymers. We compare this …
We investigate analytically the thermodynamical stability of vortices in the ground state of rotating 2-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates confined in asymptotically homogeneous trapping potentials in the Thomas-Fermi regime. Our starting point is the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional in the rotating frame. By estimating lower and upper bounds for this energy, we show that the leading order in energy and density can be described by the corresponding Thomas-Fermi quantities and we derive the next order contributions due to vortices. As an application, we consider a general potential of the …
In the framework of the trap-size scaling theory, we study the scaling properties of the Bose-Hubbard model in two dimensions in the presence of a trapping potential at finite temperature. In particular, we provide results for the particle density and the density-density correlator at the Mott transitions and within the superfluid phase. For the former quantity, numerical outcomes are also extensively compared to Local Density Approximation predictions.
We study some aspects of equilibrium and off equilibrium quantum dynamics of dilute bosonic gases in the presence of a trapping potential. We consider systems with a fixed number of particles N and study their scaling behavior with increasing the trap size. We focus on one-dimensional (1D) bosonic systems, such as gases described by the Lieb-Liniger model and its Tonks-Girardeau limit of impenetrable bosons, and gases constrained in optical lattices as described by the Bose-Hubbard model. We study their quantum (zero-temperature) behavior at equilibrium and off equilibrium during the unitary t…
We study the scaling properties of critical particle systems confined by a potential. Using renormalization-group arguments, we show that their critical behavior can be cast in the form of a trap-size scaling, resembling finite-size scaling theory, with a nontrivial trap critical exponent theta, which describes how the correlation length scales with the trap size l, i.e., $ξ\sim l^θ$ at the critical point. theta depends on the universality class of the transition, the power law of the confining potential, and on the way it is coupled to the critical modes. We present numerical results for two-…
We study the effects of a power-law trapping potential on the scaling behaviour of the entanglement at the quantum critical point of one-dimensional (1D) lattice particle systems. We compute bipartite von Neumann and Renyi entropies in the presence of the trap, and analyze their scaling behaviour with increasing the trap size. As a theoretical laboratory, we consider the quantum XY chain in an external transverse field acting as a trap for the spinless fermions of its quadratic Hamiltonian representation. We then investigate confined particle systems described by the 1D Bose-Hubbard model in t…
We investigate the critical properties of cold bosonic gases in three dimensions, confined by an external quadratic potential coupled to the particle density, and realistically described by the Bose-Hubbard (BH) model. The trapping potential is often included in experiments with cold atoms and modifies the critical finite-size scaling of the homogeneous system in a non trivial way. The trap-size scaling (TSS) theory accounts for this effect through the exponent $θ$. We perform extensive simulations of the BH model at the critical temperature, in the presence of harmonic traps. We find that the…
We investigate the critical behavior of trapped particle systems at the low-temperature superfluid transition. In particular, we consider the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of a trapping harmonic potential coupled with the particle density, which is a realistic model of cold bosonic atoms in optical lattices. We present a numerical study based on quantum Monte Carlo simulations, analyzed in the framework of the trap-size scaling (TSS). We show how the critical parameters can be derived from the trap-size dependences of appropriate observables, matching them with TSS. This…
We study the quantum (zero-temperature) critical behaviors of confined particle systems described by the one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of a confining potential, at the Mott insulator to superfluid transitions, and within the gapless superfluid phase. Specifically, we consider the hard-core limit of the model, which allows us to study the effects of the confining potential by exact and very accurate numerical results. We analyze the quantum critical behaviors in the large trap-size limit within the framework of the trap-size scaling (TSS) theory, which introduces a new…
The stable structures and melting properties of ion clouds in isotropic octupole traps are investigated using a combination of semi-analytical and numerical models, with a particular emphasis at finite size scaling effects. Small-size clouds are found to be hollow and arranged in shells corresponding approximately to the solutions of the Thomson problem. The shell structure is lost in clusters containing more than a few thousands of ions, the inner parts of the cloud becoming soft and amorphous. While melting is triggered in the core shells, the melting temperature unexpectedly follows the rul…
