We give conditions on a finitary endofunctor of a finitely accessible category to admit a final coalgebra. Our conditions always apply to the case of a finitary endofunctor of a locally finitely presentable (l.f.p.) category and they bring an explicit construction of the final coalgebra in this case. On the other hand, there are interesting examples of final coalgebras beyond the realm of l.f.p. categories to which our results apply. We rely on ideas developed by Tom Leinster for the study of self-similar objects in topology.
We construct $W$-types in the category of coalgebras for a cartesian comonad. It generalizes the constructions of $W$-types in presheaf toposes and gluing toposes.
In this contribution, we aim to introduce and study L-fuzzy partition spaces and L-fuzzy closure system spaces in a categorical framework. Further, we present the concepts of coalgebras and dialgebras corresponding to a direct upper F -transform under certain conditions and show the functorial relationship between the category of spaces with L-fuzzy partition and the category of coalgebras (dialgebras). Moreover, we show that the categories of coalgebras and dialgebras are isomorphic and introduce a pair of adjoint functors between the coalgebras and dialgebras.
As composites of constant, (co)product, identity, and powerset functors, Kripke polynomial functors form a relevant class of $\mathsf{Set}$-functors in the theory of coalgebras. The main goal of this paper is to expand the theory of limits in categories of coalgebras of Kripke polynomial functors to the context of quantale-enriched categories. To assume the role of the powerset functor we consider "powerset-like" functors based on the Hausdorff $\mathsf{V}$-category structure. As a starting point, we show that for a lifting of a $\mathsf{SET}$-functor to a topological category $\mathsf{X}$ ove…
Higher categorical structures are often defined by induction on dimension, which a priori produces only finite-dimensional structures. In this paper we show how to extend such definitions to infinite dimensions using the theory of terminal coalgebras, and we apply this method to Trimble's notion of weak n-category. Trimble's definition makes explicit the relationship between n-categories and topological spaces; our extended theory produces a definition of Trimble infinity-category and a fundamental infinity-groupoid construction. Furthermore, terminal coalgebras are often constructed as limits…
By using the Dold-Kan correspondence we construct a Quillen adjunction between the model categories of non-cocommutative coassociative simplicial and differential graded coalgebras over a field. We restrict to categories of connected coalgebras and prove a Quillen equivalence between them.
The category of internal coalgebras in a cocomplete category $\mathcal{C}$ with respect to a variety $\mathcal{V}$ is equivalent to the category of left adjoint functors from $\mathcal{V}$ into $\mathcal{C}$. This can be seen best when considering such coalgebras as finite coproduct preserving functors from $\mathcal{T}_\mathcal{V}^\mathsf{op}$, the dual of the Lawvere theory of $\mathcal{V}$, into $\mathcal{C}$: coalgebras are restrictions of left adjoints and any such left adjoint is the left Kan extension of a coalgebra along the embedding of $\mathcal{T}_\mathcal{V}^\mathsf{op}$ into $\mat…
We construct recursion categories from categories of coalgebras. Let $F$ be a nontrivial endofunctor on the category of sets that weakly preserves pullbacks and such that the category $\textbf{Set}_F$ of $F$-coalgebras is complete. The category $\textbf{Set}_F$ may be embedded in the category $\mathbf{Pfn}_F$ of $F$-coalgebras and partial morphisms, which is a $P$-category that is prodominical but not dominical in general. An existence theorem of A. Heller is applied to certain subcategories of $\textbf{Pfn}_F$ to obtain examples of recursion categories of coalgebras.
Following the pattern from linear logic, the coKleisli category of a differential category is a Cartesian differential category. What then is the coEilenberg-Moore category of a differential category? The answer is a tangent category! A key example arises from the opposite of the category of Abelian groups with the free exponential modality. The coEilenberg-Moore category, in this case, is the opposite of the category of commutative rings. That the latter is a tangent category captures a fundamental aspect of both algebraic geometry and Synthetic Differential Geometry. The general result appli…
We introduce the concept of cotensor coalgebra for a given bicomodule over a coalgebra in an abelian monoidal category. Under some further conditions we show that such a cotensor coalgebra exists and satisfies a meaningful universal property. We prove that this coalgebra is formally smooth whenever the comodule is relative injective and the coalgebra itself is formally smooth.
Differential categories are now an established abstract setting for differentiation. However not much attention has been given to the process which is inverse to differentiation: integration. This paper presents the parallel development for integration by axiomatizing an integral transformation, $s_A: !A \to !A \otimes A$, in a symmetric monoidal category with a coalgebra modality. When integration is combined with differentiation, the two fundamental theorems of calculus are expected to hold (in a suitable sense): a differential category with integration which satisfies these two theorem is c…
We show that weak monoidal Quillen equivalences induce equivalences of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories with respect to the Dwyer-Kan localization of the symmetric monoidal model categories. The result will induce a Dold-Kan correspondence of coalgebras in $\infty$-categories. Moreover, it shows that Shipley's zig-zag of Quillen equivalences lifts to an explicit symmetric monoidal equivalence of $\infty$-categories for the stable Dold-Kan correspondence. We study homotopy coherent coalgebras associated to a monoidal monoidal category. We show examples when these coalgebras cannot be rigi…
This paper studies presentations of the Sierpinski gasket as a final coalgebra for functors on several categories of metric spaces with additional designated points. The three categories which we study differ on their morphisms: one uses short (non-expanding) maps, a second uses Lipschitz maps, and a third uses continuous maps. The functor in all cases is very similar to what we find in the standard presentation of the gasket as an attractor. We prove that the Sierpinski gasket itself is the final coalgebra of a naturally-occurring functor in the continuous setting. In the short setting, the f…
We define locally wide finitary 2-categories by relaxing the definition of finitary 2-categories to allow infinitely many objects and isomorphism classes of 1-morphisms and infinite dimensional hom-spaces of 2-morphisms. After defining related concepts including transitive 2-representations in this setting, we provide a new method of constructing coalgebra 1-morphisms associated to transitive 2-representations of locally wide weakly fiat 2-categories, and demonstrate that any such transitive 2-representation is equivalent to a certain subcategory of the category of comodule 1-morphisms over th…
We prove that given $\mathcal{C}$ a presentably symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category, and any essentially small $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}$, the $\infty$-category of $\mathcal{O}$-algebras in $\mathcal{C}$ is enriched, tensored and cotensored over the presentably symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category of $\mathcal{O}$-coalgebras in $\mathcal{C}$. We provide a higher categorical analogue of the universal measuring coalgebra. For categories in the usual sense, the result was proved by Hyland, López Franco, and Vasilakopoulou.
The construction of the cotensor coalgebra for an "abelian monoidal" category $\M$ which is also cocomplete, complete and AB5, was performed in [A. Ardizzoni, C. Menini and D. Ştefan, \emph{Cotensor Coalgebras in Monoidal Categories}, Comm. Algebra, to appear]. It was also proved that this coalgebra satisfies a meaningful universal property which resembles the classical one. Here the lack of the coradical filtration for a coalgebra $E$ in $\M$ is filled by considering a direct limit $\widetilde{D}$ of a filtration consisting of wedge products of a subcoalgebra $D$ of $E$. The main aim of this …
We investigate cofree coalgebras, and limits and colimits of coalgebras in some abelian monoidal categories of interest, such as bimodules over a ring, and modules and comodules over a bialgebra or Hopf algebra. We find concrete generators for the categories of coalgebras in these monoidal categories, and explicitly construct cofree coalgebras, products and limits of coalgebras in each case. This answers an open question of A. Agore on the existence of a cofree coring, and constructs the cofree (co)module coalgebra on a $B$-(co)module, for a bialgebra $B$.
We introduce Nakayama functors for coalgebras and investigate their basic properties. These functors are expressed by certain (co)ends as in the finite case discussed by Fuchs, Schaumann, and Schweigert. This observation allows us to define Nakayama functors for Frobenius tensor categories in an intrinsic way. As applications, we establish the categorical Radford $S^4$-formula for Frobenius tensor categories and obtain some related results. These are generalizations of works of Etingof, Nikshych, and Ostrik on finite tensor categories and some known facts on co-Frobenius Hopf algebras.
We show that the category of algebraically cofibrant objects in a combinatorial and simplicial model category A has a model structure that is left-induced from that on A. In particular it follows that any presentable model category is Quillen equivalent (via a single Quillen equivalence) to one in which all objects are cofibrant.
Coalgebras for an endofunctor provide a category-theoretic framework for modeling a wide range of state-based systems of various types. We provide an iterative construction of the reachable part of a given pointed coalgebra that is inspired by and resembles the standard breadth-first search procedure to compute the reachable part of a graph. We also study coalgebras in Kleisli categories: for a functor extending a functor on the base category, we show that the reachable part of a given pointed coalgebra can be computed in that base category.
Differential categories were introduced to provide a minimal categorical doctrine for differential linear logic. Here we revisit the formalism and, in particular, examine the two different approaches to defining differentiation which were introduced. The basic approach used a deriving transformation, while a more refined approach, in the presence of a bialgebra modality, used a codereliction. The latter approach is particularly relevant to linear logic settings, where the coalgebra modality is monoidal and the Seely isomorphisms give rise to a bialgebra modality. Here, we prove that these appa…
Batanin and Markl's operadic categories are categories in which each map is endowed with a finite collection of "abstract fibres" -- also objects of the same category -- subject to suitable axioms. We give a reconstruction of the data and axioms of operadic categories in terms of the décalage comonad D on small categories. A simple case involves unary operadic categories -- ones wherein each map has exactly one abstract fibre -- which are exhibited as categories which are, first of all, coalgebras for the comonad D, and, furthermore, algebras for the monad induced on the category of D-coalgebr…
The paper uses the formalism of indexed categories to recover the proof of a standard final coalgebra theorem, thus showing existence of final coalgebras for a special class of functors on categories with finite limits and colimits. As an instance of this result, we build the final coalgebra for the powerclass functor, in the context of a Heyting pretopos with a class of small maps. This is then proved to provide a model for various non-well-founded set theories, depending on the chosen axiomatisation for the class of small maps.
Non-well-founded trees are used in mathematics and computer science, for modelling non-well-founded sets, as well as non-terminating processes or infinite data-structures. Categorically, they arise as final coalgebras for polynomial endofunctors, which we call M-types. In order to reason about trees, we need the notion of path, which can be formalised in the internal logic of any locally cartesian closed pretopos with a natural number object. In such categories, we derive existence results about M-types, leading to stability of locally cartesian closed pretoposes with a natural number object a…
We prove a number of results concerning monomorphisms, epimorphisms, dominions and codominions in categories of coalgebras. Examples include: (a) representation-theoretic characterizations of monomorphisms in all of these categories that when the Hopf algebras in question are commutative specialize back to the familiar necessary and sufficient conditions (due to Bien-Borel) that a linear algebraic subgroup be epimorphically embedded; (b) the fact that a morphism in the category of (cocommutative) coalgebras, (cocommutative) bialgebras, and a host of categories of Hopf algebras has the same cod…
This paper constructs model structures on the categories of coalgebras and pointed irreducible coalgebras over an operad. The underlying chain-complex is assumed to be unbounded and the results for bounded coalgebras over an operad are derived from the unbounded case.
For a set-endofunctor $F$, a graph is triple $(V,E,g)$ with a structure map $g:E\rightarrow F V$. This model is a generalized coalgebra over the category of sets. In this note, we model graphs as coalgebras over $Set\times Set$ and use the theory of coalgebras over arbitrary categories to conclude properties of the category of graphs.
We provide bar and cobar constructions as functors between some categories of curved algebras and curved augmented coalgebras over a graded commutative ring. These functors are adjoint to each other.
This paper is based on the material of Section 4 and Appendix C in arXiv:1503.05523v6, which was excluded from the subsequent versions of arXiv:1503.05523. We present the definition of a dedualizing complex of bicomodules over a pair of cocoherent coassociative coalgebras $\mathcal C$ and $\mathcal D$. Given such a complex $\mathcal B^\bullet$, we construct an equivalence between the (bounded or unbounded) conventional, as well as absolute, derived categories of the abelian categories of left comodules over $\mathcal C$ and left contramodules over $\mathcal D$. Furthermore, we spell out the de…
We study the universal measuring coalgebras P(A,B) of Sweedler and the universal measuring comodules Q(M,N) of Batchelor. We show that these universal objects exist in a very general context. We provide a detailed proof of an observation of Wraith, that the P(A,B) are the hom-objects of an enrichment of algebras in coalgebras. We show also that the Q(M,N) provide an enrichment of the global category of modules in the global category of comodules.
We study the bialgebra structures on quiver coalgebras and the monoidal structures on the categories of locally nilpotent and locally finite quiver representations. It is shown that the path coalgebra of an arbitrary quiver admits natural bialgebra structures. This endows the category of locally nilpotent and locally finite representations of an arbitrary quiver with natural monoidal structures from bialgebras. We also obtain theorems of Gabriel type for pointed bialgebras and hereditary finite pointed monoidal categories.
This paper determines what structure is needed for internal homs in a monoidal category C to be liftable to the category C^G of Eilenberg-Moore coalgebras for a monoidal comonad G on C. We apply this to lift star-autonomy with the view to recasting the definition of quantum groupoid.
We show that any directed colimit of acessible categories and accessible full embeddings is accessible and, assuming the existence of arbitrarily large strongly compact cardinals, any directed colimit of acessible categories and accessible embeddings is accessible.
We generalize the concepts of locally presentable and accessible categories. Our framework includes such categories as small presheaves over large categories and ind-categories. This generalization is intended for applications in the abstract homotopy theory.
We prove that a weak factorization system on a locally presentable category is accessible if and only if it is small generated in the sense of R. Garner. Moreover, we discuss an analogy of Smith's theorem for accessible model categories.
We extend the 2-representation theory of finitary 2-categories to certain 2-categories with infinitely many objects, denoted locally finitary 2-categories, and extend the classical classification results of simple transitive 2-representations of weakly fiat 2-categories to this environment. We also consider locally finitary 2-categories and 2-representations with a grading, and prove the associated coalgebra 1-morphisms have a homogeneous structure. We use these results to classify simple transitive 2-representations of certain classes of cyclotomic 2-Kac-Moody algebras.
We give a purely category-theoretic proof of the result of Makkai and Paré saying that the category $\bf Lin$ of linearly ordered sets and order preserving injective mappings is a minimal finitely accessible category. We also discuss the existence of a minimal $\aleph_1$-accessible category.
We provide a new characterization of enriched accessible categories by introducing the two new notions of virtual reflectivity and virtual orthogonality as a generalization of the usual reflectivity and orthogonality conditions for locally presentable categories. The word virtual refers to the fact that the reflectivity and orthogonality conditions are given in the free completion of the $\mathcal V$-category involved under small limits, instead of the $\mathcal V$-category itself. In this way we hope to provide a clearer understanding of the theory as well as a useful way of recognizing acces…
In this paper, we study modules over quotient spaces of certain categorified fiber bundles. These are understood as modules over entwining structures involving a small $K$-linear category $\mathcal D$ and a $K$-coalgebra $C$. We obtain Frobenius and separability conditions for functors on entwined modules. We also introduce the notion of a $C$-Galois extension $\mathcal E\subseteq \mathcal D$ of categories. Under suitable conditions, we show that entwined modules over a $C$-Galois extension may be described as modules over the subcategory $\mathcal E$ of $C$-coinvariants of $\mathcal D$.
Incidence coalgebras of categories in the sense of Joni and Rota are studied, specifically cases where a monoidal product on the category turns these into (weak) bialgebras. The overlap with the theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras and that of Hopf quivers is discussed, and examples including trees, skew shapes, Milner's bigraphs and crossed modules are considered.
This paper is a coalgebra version of arXiv:1703.04266 and a sequel to arXiv:1607.03066. We present the definition of a pseudo-dualizing complex of bicomodules over a pair of coassociative coalgebras $\mathcal C$ and $\mathcal D$. For any such complex $\mathcal L^\bullet$, we construct a triangulated category endowed with a pair of (possibly degenerate) t-structures of the derived type, whose hearts are the abelian categories of left $\mathcal C$-comodules and left $\mathcal D$-contramodules. A weak version of pseudo-derived categories arising out of (co)resolving subcategories in abelian/exact…
The main purpose of this paper is to show that the converse of the known implication weakly action representable implies action accessible is false. In particular we show that both action accessibility, as well as the (at least formally stronger) condition requiring the existence of all normalizers do not imply weakly-action-representability even for varieties. In addition we show that in contrast to both action accessibility and the condition requiring the existence of all normalizers, weakly-action representability is not necessarily inherited by Birkoff subcategories.
Differential categories axiomatize the basics of differentiation and provide categorical models of differential linear logic. A differential category is said to have antiderivatives if a natural transformation $\mathsf{K}$, which all differential categories have, is a natural isomorphism. Differential categories with antiderivatives come equipped with a canonical integration operator such that generalizations of the Fundamental Theorems of Calculus hold. In this paper, we show that Blute, Ehrhard, and Tasson's differential category of convenient vector spaces has antiderivatives. To help prove…
