We prove that if $f$ is a Lipschitz function on $\R$, $A$ and $B$ are self-adjoint operators such that ${\rm rank} (A-B)=1$, then $f(A)-f(B)$ belongs to the weak space $\boldsymbol{S}_{1,\be}$, i.e., $s_j(A-B)\le{\rm const} (1+j)^{-1}$. We deduce from this result that if $A-B$ belongs to the trace class $\boldsymbol{S}_1$ and $f$ is Lipschitz, then $f(A)-f(B)\in\boldsymbol{S}_Ω$, i.e., $\sum_{j=0}^ns_j(f(A)-f(B))\le\const\log(2+n)$. We also obtain more general results about the behavior of double operator integrals of the form $Q=\iint(f(x)-f(y))(x-y)^{-1}dE_1(x)TdE_2(y)$, where $E_1$ and $E_2$ are spectral measures. We show that if $T\in\boldsymbol{S}_1$, then $Q\in\boldsymbol{S}_Ω$ and if $\rank T=1$, then $Q\in\boldsymbol{S}_{1,\be}$. Finally, if $T$ belongs to the Matsaev ideal $\boldsymbol{S}_ω$, then $Q$ is a compact operator.
We consider functions $f(T,R)$ of pairs of noncommuting contractions on Hilbert space and study the problem for which functions $f$ we have Lipschitz type estimates in Schatten--von Neumann norms. We prove that if $f$ belongs to the Besov class $(B_{\infty,1}^1)_+({\Bbb D}^2)$ of analytic functions in the bidisk, then we have a Lipschitz type estimate for functions $f(T,R)$ of pairs of not necessarily commuting contractions $(T,R)$ in the Schatten--von Neumann norms $\boldsymbol{S}_p$ for $p\in[1,2]$. On the other hand, we show that for functions in the Besov space $(B_{\infty,1}^1)_+({\Bbb D}…
We consider functions $f(A,B)$ of noncommuting self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ that can be defined in terms of double operator integrals. We prove that if $f$ belongs to the Besov class $B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$, then we have the following Lipschitz type estimate in the trace norm: $\|f(A_1,B_1)-f(A_2,B_2)\|_{\bS_1}\le\const(\|A_1-A_2\|_{\bS_1}+\|B_1-B_2\|_{\bS_1})$. However, the condition $f\in B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$ does not imply the Lipschitz type estimate in the operator norm.
We study perturbations of functions $f(A,B)$ of noncommuting self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ that can be defined in terms of double operator integrals. We prove that if $f$ belongs to the Besov class $B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$, then we have the following Lipschitz type estimate in the Schatten--von Neumann norm $\bS_p$, $1\le p\le2$ norm: $\|f(A_1,B_1)-f(A_2,B_2)\|_{\bS_p}\le\const(\|A_1-A_2\|_{\bS_p}+\|B_1-B_2\|_{\bS_p})$. However, the condition $f\in B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$ does not imply the Lipschitz type estimate in $\bS_p$ with $p>2$. The main tool is Schatten--von Neumann norm estimates for trip…
The purpose of this survey article is a comprehensive study of operator Lipschitz functions. A continuous function $f$ on the real line ${\Bbb R}$ is called operator Lipschitz if $\|f(A)-f(B)\|\le{\rm const}\|A-B\|$ for arbitrary self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$. We give sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for operator Lipschitzness. We also study the class of operator differentiable functions on ${\Bbb R}$. Then we consider operator Lipschitz functions on closed subsets of the plane as well as commutator Lipschitz functions on such subsets. Am important role is played by double o…

The main result of this paper is a description of the space of functions on the unit circle, for which Krein's trace formula holds for arbitrary pairs of unitary operators with trace class difference. This space coincides with the space of operator Lipschitz functions on the unit circle.
The main result of the paper is a description of the class of functions on the unit circle, for which Krein's trace formula holds for arbitrary pairs of unitary operators with trace class difference. We prove that this class of functions coincides with the class of operator Lipschitz functions.
The purpose of this paper is to obtain an integral representation for the difference $f(L_1)-f(L_2)$ of functions of maximal dissipative operators. This representation in terms of double operator integrals will allow us to establish Lipschitz type estimates for functions of maximal dissipative operators. We also consider a similar problem for quasicommutators, i.e., operators of the form $f(L_1)R-Rf(L_2)$.
We describe the maximal class of functions $f$ on the real line, for which the Lifshitz--Krein trace formula $\operatorname{trace}(f(A)-f(B))=\int_{\Bbb R} f'(s)\boldsymbolξ(s)\,ds$ holds for arbitrary self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ with $A-B$ in the trace class $\boldsymbol{S}_1$. We prove that this class of functions coincide with the class of operator Lipschitz functions.
In this paper we prove that for an arbitrary pair $\{T_1,T_0\}$ of contractions on Hilbert space with trace class difference, there exists a function $\boldsymbolξ$ in $L^1({\Bbb T})$ (called a spectral shift function for the pair $\{T_1,T_0\}$ ) such that the trace formula $\operatorname{trace}(f(T_1)-f(T_0))=\int_{\Bbb T} f'(ζ)\boldsymbolξ(ζ)\,dζ$) holds for an arbitrary operator Lipschitz function $f$ analytic in the unit disk.
We establish a relation between Lipschitz operator ideals and linear operator ideals, which fits in the framework of Galois connection between lattices. We use this relationship to give a criterion which allow us to recognize when a Banach Lipschitz operator ideal is of composition type or not. Also, we introduce the concept of minimal Banach Lipschitz operator ideal, which have analogous properties to minimal Banach operator ideals. Also we characterize minimal Banach Lipschitz operator ideals which are of composition type and present examples which are not of this class.
The main objective of the paper is to obtain sharp Lipschitz type estimates for the norm of operator differences $f(L_1,M_1)-f(L_2,M_2)$ for pairs $(L_1,M_1)$ and $(L_2,M_2)$ of commuting maximal dissipative operators. To obtain such estimates, we use double operator integrals with respect to semi-spectral measures associated with the pairs $(L_1,M_1)$ and $(L_2,M_2)$. Note that the situation is considerably more complicated than in the case of functions of two commuting contractions and to overcome difficulties we had to elaborate new techniques. We deduce from the main result Hölder type est…
We give some new characterizations of strictly Lipschitz p-summing operators. These operators have been introduced in order to improve the Lipschitz p-summing operators. Therefore, we adapt this definition for constructing other classes of Lipschitz mappings which are called strictly Lipschitz p-nuclear and strictly Lipschitz (p,r,s)-summing operators. Some interesting properties and factorization results are obtained for these new classes.
We show that there is an operator space notion of Lipschitz embeddability between operator spaces which is strictly weaker than its linear counterpart but which is still strong enough to impose linear restrictions on operator space structures. This shows that there is a nontrivial theory of nonlinear geometry for operator spaces and it answers a question in [BCD21]. For that, we introduce the operator space version of Lipschitz-free Banach spaces and prove several properties of it. In particular, we show that separable operator spaces satisfy a sort of isometric Lipschitz-lifting property in t…
In this article, we characterize the bounded and the compact multiplication operators between distinct iterated logarithmic Lipschitz spaces, and between the Lipschitz space and an iterated logarithmic Lipschitz space of an infinite tree. In addition, we provide operator norm estimates and show that there are no isometries among such operators. %We obtain a new characterization of the bounded multiplication operators acting on an iterated logarithmic Lipschitz space and the compact multiplication operators between the weighted Lipschitz space and the Lipschitz space.
We give conditions that ensure that an operator satisfying a Piestch domination in a given setting also satisfies a Piestch domination in a different setting. From this we derive that a bounded mutlilinear operator $T$ is Lipschitz $p$-summing if and only if the mapping $ f_T(x_1\otimes\cdots \otimes x_n):=T(x_1,\ldots, x_n)$ is Lipschitz $p$-summing. The results are based on the projective tensor norm. An example with the Hilbert tensor norm is provided to show that the statement may not hold when a reasonable cross-norm other than the projective tensor norm is considered.
We introduce a substitute for the concept of slice for the case of non-linear Lipschitz functionals and transfer to the non-linear case some results about the Daugavet and the alternative Daugavet equations previously known only for linear operators.
We consider the space of molecules endowed with the transpose version of the Chevet-Saphar norm and we identify its dual space with the space of Lipschitz strongly p-summing operators. We also extend some old results to the category of Lipschitz mappings and we give a factorization result of Lipschitz (p,r,s)-summing operators.
Let $\G$ be a Carnot group of homogeneous dimension $M$ and $Δ$ its horizontal sublaplacian. For $α\in(0,M)$ we show that operators of the form $H_α:=(-Δ)^α+V$ have no singular spectrum, under generous assumptions on the multiplication operator $V$. The proof is based on commutator methods and Hardy inequalities.
We prove a general factorization theorem for Lipschitz summing operators in the context of metric spaces which recovers several linear and nonlinear factorization theorems that have been proved recently in different environments. New applications are also given.
By the linearization property of Lipschitz-free spaces, any Lipschitz map $f : M \to N$ between two pointed metric spaces may be extended uniquely to a bounded linear operator $\widehat{f} : \mathcal F(M) \to \mathcal F(N)$ between their corresponding Lipschitz-free spaces. In this note, we explore the connections between the dynamics of Lipschitz self-maps $f : M \to M$ and the linear dynamics of their extensions $\widehat{f} : \mathcal F(M) \to \mathcal F(M)$. This not only allows us to relate topological dynamical systems to linear dynamical systems but also provide a new class of hypercycl…
We study the weighted composition operators between the Lipschitz space and the space of bounded functions on the set of vertices of an infinite tree. We characterized the boundedness, the compactness, and the boundedness from below of weighted composition operators. We also determine the isometric weighted composition operators.
In this article, we introduce the Lipschitz bounded approximation property for operator ideals. With this notion, we extend the original work done by Godefroy and Kalton and give some partial answers on the equivalence between the bounded approximation property and the Lipschitz bounded approximation property based on an arbitrary operator ideal. Furthermore, we investigate the three space problems on the preceding bounded approximation properties.
Let $X$ be a pointed compact metric space. Assuming that $\mathrm{lip}_0(X)$ has the uniform separation property, we prove that every weakly compact composition operator on spaces of Lipschitz functions $\mathrm{Lip}_0(X)$ and $\mathrm{lip}_0(X)$ is compact.
We develop the method of similar operators to study the spectral properties of unbounded perturbed linear operators that can be represented by matrices of various kinds. The class of operators under consideration includes various differential operators with an involution, such as one-dimensional Dirac operators of a certain type.
The aim of the article is to prove $L^{p}-L^{q}$ off-diagonal estimates and $L^{p}-L^{q}$ boundedness for operators in the functional calculus of certain perturbed first order differential operators of Dirac type for with $p\le q$ in a certain range of exponents. We describe the $L^{p}-L^{q}$ off-diagonal estimates and the $L^{p}-L^{q}$ boundedness in terms of the decay properties of the related holomorphic functions and give a necessary condition for $L^{p}-L^{q}$ boundedness. Applications to Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev estimates for fractional operators will be given.
We prove that Burenkov's Extension Operator preserves Sobolev spaces built on general Morrey spaces, including classical Morrey spaces. The analysis concerns bounded and unbounded open sets with Lipschitz boundaries in the n-dimensional Euclidean space.
We study the numerical radius of Lipschitz operators on Banach spaces via the Lipschitz numerical index, which is an analogue of the numerical index in Banach space theory. We give a characterization of the numerical radius and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for Banach spaces to have Lipschitz numerical index 1. As an application, we show that real lush spaces and $C$-rich subspaces have Lipschitz numerical index 1. Moreover, using the G$\hat{a}$teaux differentiability of Lipschitz operators, we characterize the Lipschitz numerical index of separable Banach spaces with the RNP. Fi…
We consider Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators perturbed by a radial potential. Under weak assumptions we prove a spectral mapping theorem for the generated semigroup. The proof relies on a perturbative construction of the resolvent, based on angular separation, and the Gearhart-Prüß Theorem.
We consider perturbed quadharmonic operators, $Δ^4 + V$, acting on sections of a Hermitian vector bundle over a complete Riemannian manifold, with the potential $V$ satisfying a bound from below by a non-positive function depending on the distance from a point. Under a bounded geometry assumption on the Hermitian vector bundle and the underlying Riemannian manifold, we give a sufficient condition for the essential self-adjointness of such operators. We then apply this to prove the separation property in $L^2$ when the perturbed operator acts on functions.
Given pointed metric spaces $X$ and $Y$, we characterize the basepoint-preserving Lipschitz maps $ϕ$ from $Y$ to $X$ inducing an isometric composition operator $C_ϕ$ between the Lipschitz spaces $Lip_0(X)$ and $Lip_0(Y)$, whenever $X$ enjoys the peak property. This gives an answer to a question posed by N. Weaver in his book [Lipschitz algebras. Second edition. World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd., Hackensack, NJ, 2018].
Let $Ω\subset\dR^d$ be a bounded or an unbounded Lipschitz domain. In this note we address the problem of continuation of functions from the Sobolev space $H^1(Ω)$ up to functions in the Sobolev space $H^1(\dR^d)$ via a linear operator. The minimal possible norm of such an operator is estimated from below in terms of spectral properties of self-adjoint Robin Laplacians on domains $Ω$ and $\dR^d\setminus\ovΩ$. Another estimate of this norm is also given, where spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with the $δ$-interaction supported on the hypersurface $\partialΩ$ are involved. General re…
This paper resolves a number of conjectures in the perturbation theory of linear operators. Namely, we prove that every Lipschitz function is operator Lipschitz in the Schatten-von Neumann ideals $S^α$, $1 < α< \infty$. The negative result for $S^α$, $α= 1, \infty$ was earlier established by Yu. Farforovskaya in 1972.
Using the extrapolation of one-sided weights, we establish the boundedness of commutators generated by weighted Lipschitz functions and one-sided singular integral operators from weighted Lebesgue spaces to weighted one-sided Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. The corresponding results for commutators of one-sided discrete square functions are also obtained.
We consider a functional calculus for compact operators, acting on the singular values rather than the spectrum, which appears frequently in applied mathematics. Necessary and sufficient conditions for this singular value functional calculus to be Lipschitz-continuous with respect to the Hilbert-Schmidt norm are given. We also provide sharp constants.
Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D and be an analytic operator-valued function on D, where D is the unit disk. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness and compactness of weighted composition operators W_{ψ,ϕ} on Lip_A(D;X;α) and lip_A(D;X;α), the spaces of analytic X-valued Lipschitz functions f, where X is a complex Banach space and α is in (0, 1].
We apply the geometric approach provided by $Σ$-operators to develop a theory of $p$-summability for multilinear operators. In this way, we introduce the notion of Lipschitz $p$-summing multilinear operators and show that it is consistent with a general panorama of generalization: Namely, they satisfy Pietsch-type domination and factorization theorems and generalizations of the inclusion Theorem, Grothendieck's coincidence Theorems, the weak Dvoretsky-Rogers Theorem and a Lindenstrauss-Pelczyńsky Theorem. We also characterize this new class in tensorial terms by means of a Chevet-Saphar-type t…
We study 2-microlocal Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces with variable exponents on special Lipschitz domains. These spaces are as usual defined by restriction of the corresponding spaces on $\R^n$. In this paper we give two intrinsic characterizations of these spaces using local means and the Peetre maximal operator. Further we construct a linear and bounded extension operator following the approach done by Rychkov, which at the end also turns out to be universal.
We introduce a class of iterated logarithmic Lipschitz spaces $\mathcal{L}^{(k)}$, $k\in\mathbb{N}$, on an infinite tree which arise naturally in the context of operator theory. We characterize boundedness and compactness of the multiplication operators on $\mathcal{L}^{(k)}$ and provide estimates on their operator norm and their essential norm. In addition, we determine the spectrum, characterize the multiplication operators that are bounded below, and prove that on such spaces there are no nontrivial isometric multiplication operators and no isometric zero divisors.
We study extension theorems for Lipschitz-type operators acting on metric spaces and with values on spaces of integrable functions. Pointwise domination is not a natural feature of such spaces, and so almost everywhere inequalities and other measure-theoretic notions are introduced.%more appropriate. Thus, we adapt the classical definition of Lipschitz map to the context of spaces of integrable functions by introducing such elements. We analyze Lipschitz type inequalities in two fundamental cases. The first concerns a.e. pointwise inequalities, while the second considers dominations involving …
In this work we provide a characterization of distinct type of (linear and non-linear) maps between Banach spaces in terms of the differentiability of certain class of Lipschitz functions. Our results are stated in an abstract bornological and non-linear framework. Restricted to the linear case, we can apply our results to compact, weakly-compact, limited and completely continuous linear operators. Moreover, our results yield a characterization of Gelfand-Phillips spaces and recover some known result of Schur spaces and reflexive spaces concerning the differentiability of real-valued Lipschitz…
Motivated by the notion of K-gentle partition of unity introduced in [12] and the notion of K-Lipschitz retract studied in [17], we study a weaker notion related to the Kantorovich-Rubinstein transport distance, that we call K-random projection. We show that K-random projections can still be used to provide linear extension operators for Lipschitz maps. We also prove that the existence of these random projections is necessary and sufficient for the existence of weak* continuous operators. Finally we use this notion to characterize the metric spaces (X, d) such that the free space F(X) has the …
