In the context of low-energy effective theory of multiple M2-branes, we construct the interaction terms between the world-volume fields of M2-branes and the antisymmetric tensor fields of three- and six-forms. By utilizing the compactification procedure, we show coincidence between the dimensionally reduced coupling and the R-R coupling to D-branes in type II string theory. We also discuss that a cubic term proportional to six-form field reproduces the quartic mass-deformation term in the world-volume theory of multiple M2-branes.
We show that the anomalous couplings of $D$-brane gauge and gravitational fields to Ramond-Ramond tensor potentials can be deduced by a simple anomaly inflow argument applied to intersecting $D$-branes and use this to determine the eight-form gravitational coupling.
We compute three-point and higher order couplings in magnetized brane models. We show that higher order couplings are written as products of three-point couplings. This behavior is the same as higher order amplitudes by conformal field theory calculations e.g. in intersecting D-brane models.
The curvature on codimension-two and higher branes is not regular for arbitrary matter sources. Nevertheless, the low-energy theory for an observer on such a brane should be well-defined and independent to any regularization procedure. This is achieved via appropriate classical renormalization of the brane couplings, and leads to a natural hierarchy between standard model couplings and couplings to gravity.
Starting from the bosonic sector of the M-theory super-five-brane we obtain the action for duality-symmetric three-brane and construct the consistent coupling of the proposed action with the bosonic sector of type IIB supergravity.
We study some aspects of the strong coupling dynamics of Dirichlet six branes, anti- six branes, and orientifold planes by using the equivalence of type IIA string theory and M-theory on S^1. In the strong coupling limit there exists static configuration of brane and anti-brane at arbitrary separation, suspended in an external magnetic field. The mass of the open string stretched between the brane and the anti-brane approaches a finite positive value even when the branes coincide. Similar result is obtained for a Dirichlet six brane on top of an orientifold six plane. We also derive the anomal…
We study how non-BPS type II D-branes couple to R-R potentials. Upon tachyon condensation the couplings we find give rise to the Wess-Zumino action of BPS D-branes.
We obtain the couplings of noncommutative branes of type II string theories to constant Ramond-Ramond backgrounds, for BPS as well as non-BPS branes, in the background-independent description. For the BPS branes, we also generalize these couplings to other descriptions, and thereby argue their equivalence to the known couplings in the commutative description. The first part is a review of earlier work while the second part contains some additional observations.
Couplings between a closed string RR field and open strings are calculated in a system of coincident branes and antibranes of type II theory. The result can be written cleanly using the curvature of the superconnection.
Field theories in the presence of branes encounter localized divergences that renormalize brane couplings. The sources of these brane-localized divergences are understood as arising either from broken translation invariance, or from short distance singularities as the brane thickness vanishes. While the former are generated only by quantum corrections, the latter can appear even at the classical level. Using as an example six-dimensional scalar field theory in the background of a 3-brane, we show how to interpret such classical divergences by the usual regularization and renormalization proced…
The direct string computation of anomalous D-brane and orientifold plane couplings is extended to include the curvature of the normal bundle. The normalization of these terms is fixed unambiguously. New, non-anomalous gravitational couplings are found.
After reviewing the general structure of supersymmetric intersecting brane world models, we discuss the issue of stringy gauge coupling unification for a natural class of MSSM-like models.
An explicit calculation is performed to check all the tangent bundle gravitational couplings of Dirichlet branes and Orientifold planes by scattering $q$ gravitons with a $p+1$ form Ramond-Ramond potential in the world-volume of a $D(p+2q)$-brane. The structure of the D-brane Wess-Zumino term in the world-volume action is confirmed, while a different O-plane Wess-Zumino action is obtained.
In this note we present a simple, general prescription for coupling brane localized fields to bulk supergravity. We illustrate the procedure by considering 6D N=2 bulk supergravity on a 2D orbifold, with brane fields localized at the fixed points. The resulting action enjoys the full 6D N=2 symmetries in the bulk, and those of 4D N=1 supergravity at the brane positions.
We study anomalous Wess-Zumino couplings of D-branes and O-planes in a general background and derive them from a direct string computation by factorizing in the RR channel various one-loop amplitudes. In particular, we find that Op-planes present gravitational anomalous couplings involving the Hirzebruch polynomial L, similarly to the roof genus A encoding Dp-brane anomalous couplings. We determine, in each case, the precise dependence of these couplings on the curvature of the tangent and normal bundles.
We study the Born-Infeld D-brane action in the limit when the string coupling goes to infinity. The resulting actions is presented in an arbitrary background and shown to describe a foliation of the world-volume by strings. Using a recently developed ``degenerate'' supergravity the parton picture is shown to be applicable also to supersymmetric D-branes.
We review the solution of the boundary CFTs that describe the symmetric branes in the Nappi-Witten gravitational wave, namely D2 and S1 branes. The D2 branes are the twisted branes of the model while the S1 branes are the Cardy branes. We present in both cases the bulk-boundary couplings and the boundary three-point couplings and discuss the relation with branes in AdS3 and in S3. We also discuss the analogy between the open string couplings in the H4 model and the couplings for magnetized and intersecting branes.
The standard eleven-dimensional supergravity action depends on a three-form gauge field and does not allow direct coupling to five-branes. Using previously developed methods, we construct a covariant eleven-dimensional supergravity action depending on a three-form and six-form gauge field in a duality-symmetric manner. This action is coupled to both the M-theory two-brane and five-brane, and corresponding equations of motion are obtained. Consistent coupling relates D=11 duality properties with self-duality properties of the M-5-brane. From this duality-symmetric formulation, one can derive an…
In this short note we review the construction and role of Wess-Zumino couplings of Dirichlet branes and Orientifold planes, and show how these combine to give the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancelling terms.
We use a phase space description to (re)derive a first order form of the Born-Infeld action for D-branes. This derivation also makes it possible to consider the limit where the tension of the D-brane goes to zero. We find that in this limit, which can be considered to be the strong coupling limit of the fundamental string theory, the world-volume of the D-brane generically splits into a collection of tensile strings.
We present the perturbative Yukawa couplings of the Standard Model on fractional intersecting D6-branes on T6/Z6' and discuss two mechanisms of creating mass terms for the vector-like particles in the matter spectrum, through perturbative three-point couplings and through continuous D6-brane displacements.
We compute scattering amplitudes involving both R-R and NS-NS fields in the presence of a D-brane or orientifold plane. These provide direct evidence for the anomalous couplings in the D-brane and orientifold actions. The D9-brane and O9-plane are found to couple to the first Pontrjagin class with the expected relative strength.
We derive the couplings of noncommutative D-branes to spatially varying Ramond-Ramond fields, extending our earlier results in hep-th/0009101. These couplings are expressed in terms of *n products of operators involving open Wilson lines. Equivalence of the noncommutative to the commutative couplings implies interesting identities as well as an expression for the Seiberg-Witten map that was previously conjectured. We generalise our couplings to include transverse scalars, thereby obtaining a Seiberg-Witten map relating commutative and noncommutative descriptions of these scalars. RR couplings …
Gravitational couplings in bulk space-time include those terms which are fixed by scattering amplitude of strings and ambiguous terms that are coming from the field redefinitions. These field redefinitions can be fixed in the bulk by ghost-free condition. In this paper we have revised the effective gravitational couplings on D-branes by including the field redefinitions. We find the gravitational effective action up to $α'^2$-order.
We propose a new approach for coupling the type II superstring to the Ramond-Ramond background of D-branes in the RNS formalism, alternative to introducing RR vertex operators. It is based on the mixing between Ramond-Ramond p-form excitations in the closed string spectrum and transversally polarized excitations in the open string spectrum.
The Wess-Zumino coupling on D-branes in string theory is known to receive higher derivative corrections which couple the Ramond-Ramond potential to terms involving the square of the spacetime curvature tensor. Consistency with T-duality implies that the branes should also have four-derivative couplings that involve the NS-NS B-field. We use T-duality to predict some of these couplings. We then confirm these results with string worldsheet computations by evaluating disc amplitudes with insertions of one R-R and two NS-NS vertex operators.
We discuss issues involving p(D)- brane charge quantization and the normalization of effective actions, in string/M-theory. We also construct the action of (the bosonic sector of) eleven dimensional supergravity in the presence of two- and five- branes and discuss (perturbative) anomaly cancellation.
We study deformations of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with space-time dependent couplings by embedding probe D3-branes in supergravity backgrounds with non-trivial fluxes. The effective action on the world-volume of the D3-branes is analyzed and a map between the deformation parameters and the fluxes is obtained. As an explicit example, we consider D3-branes in a background corresponding to $(p,q)$ 5-branes intersecting them and show that the effective theory on the D3-branes precisely agrees with the supersymmetric Janus configuration found by Gaiotto and Witten in arXiv:0804…
Closed type 0 string theories and their D-branes are introduced. The full Wess-Zumino action of these D-branes is derived. The analogy with type II is emphasized throughout the argument.
Using the field theoretical approach introduced by Cremades, Ibanez and Marchesano for describing open strings attached to D9 branes having different magnetizations, we give a procedure for determining the Kaehler metrics of those open strings in toroidal compactifications.
We discuss the supergravity couplings of noncommutative D-branes by considering the disk amplitudes with one closed string insertion. The result confirms a recent proposal for the general form of the noncommutative Yang-Mills operators coupling to the massless closed string modes. The construction involves smearing Yang-Mills field variables along an open Wilson line. For multiple D-branes interacting with background supergravity fields, this prescription reduces, in the B=0 limit, to the ``symmetrized trace'' prescription, and the supergravity fields are seen to be functionals of the nonabeli…
We evaluate the string theory disc amplitude of one Ramond-Ramond field C^(p-3) and two Neveu-Schwarz B-fields in the presence of a single Dp-brane in type II string theory. From this amplitude we extract the four-derivative (or equivalently order (alpha')^2) part of the Dp-brane action involving these fields. We show that the new couplings are invariant under R-R and NS-NS gauge transformations and compatible with linear T-duality.
The physical meaning of the Reflection Equation Algebras of hep-th/0107265 and hep-th/0203110 is elucidated in the context of Wess--Zumino--Witten D-brane geometry, as determined by couplings of closed-string modes to the D-brane. Particular emphasis is laid on the role of algebraic fusion of the matrix generators of the Reflection Equation Algebras. The fusion is shown to induce transitions among D-brane configurations admitting an interpretation in terms of RG-driven condensation phenomena.
We systematically search intersecting D-brane models, which just realize the Standard Model chiral matter contents and gauge symmetry. We construct new classes of non-supersymmetric Standard Model-like models. We also study gauge coupling constants of these models. The tree level gauge coupling is a function of compactification moduli, string scale, string coupling and winding number of D-branes. By tuning them, we examine whether the models can explain the experimental values of gauge couplings. As a result, we find that the string scale should be greater than $10^{14-15}$GeV if the compactif…
The Yukawa couplings of the simpler models of D-branes on toroidal orientifolds suffer from the so-called ``rank one'' problem -- there is only a single non-zero mass and no mixing. We consider the one-loop contribution of E2-instantons to Yukawa couplings on intersecting D6-branes, and show that they can solve the rank one problem. In addition they have the potential to provide a geometric explanation for the hierarchies observed in the Yukawa coupling. In order to do this we provide the necessary quantities for instanton calculus in this class of background.
We discuss some of the issues arising in trying to extend the ABJM action to include couplings to background fields. This is analogous to the Myers-Chern-Simons terms of the multiple Dp-brane action. We review and extend previous results to include terms which are quadratic in the background fields. These are fixed by requiring that we recover the correct Myers-type terms upon using the novel Higgs mechanism to reduce to the multiple D2-brane action.
Geometrically non-Higgsable seven-branes carry gauge sectors that cannot be broken by complex structure deformation, and there is growing evidence that such configurations are typical in F-theory. We study strongly coupled physics associated with these branes. Axiodilaton profiles are computed using Ramanujan's theories of elliptic functions to alternative bases, showing explicitly that the string coupling is order one in the vicinity of the brane; that it sources nilpotent $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy and therefore the associated brane charges are modular; and that essentially all F-theory co…
We consider N=1 supersymmetric SU(N_c) gauge theories, using the type IIB brane construction recently proposed by Hanany and Zaffaroni. At non-zero string coupling, we find that the bending of branes imposes consistency conditions that allow only non-anomalous gauge theories with stable vacua, i.e., N_f >= N_c, to be constructed. We find qualitative differences between the brane configurations for N_f <= 3N_c and N_f > 3N_c, corresponding to asymptotically free and infrared free theories respectively. We also discuss some properties of the brane configurations that may be relevant to construct…
Applying supersymmetric localization for superstring worldsheet theory with N=(1,1) supersymmetries on a cylinder and with arbitrary boundary interactions, we find the most general formula for the Ramond-Ramond (RR) coupling of D-branes. We allow all massive excitations of open superstrings, and find that only a finite number of them can contribute to the formula. The formula is written by Quillen's superconnection which includes higher form gauge fields, and the resultant general Chern-Simons terms are consistent with RR charge quantization. Applying the formula to boundary string field theor…
We show how, by making use of a new basis of the IIB supergravity axion-dilaton coset, SL(2,R)/SO(2), 7-branes that belong to different conjugacy classes of the duality group SL(2,R) naturally couple to IIB supergravity with appropriate source terms characterized by an SL(2,R) charge matrix Q. The conjugacy classes are determined by the value of the determinant of Q. The (p,q) 7-branes are the branes in the conjugacy class detQ = 0. The 7-branes in the conjugacy class detQ > 0 are labelled by three numbers (p,q,r) which parameterize the matrix Q and will be called Q7-branes. We construct the f…
We compute Yukawa couplings in type IIB string theory compactified on a non factorisable six-torus in the presence of D9 branes and fluxes. The setting studied in detail, is obtained by T-dualising an intersecting brane configuration of type IIA theory compactified on a torus generated by the SO(12) root lattice. Particular deformations of such torus are taken into account and provide moduli dependent couplings. Agreement with the type IIA result is found in a non trivial way. The classical type IIB calculation gives also information on a factor accessible only by quantum computations on the t…
We study the effective action for finite-temperature D3-branes with an electromagnetic field at weak and strong coupling. We call this action the thermal DBI action. Comparing at low temperature the leading $T^4$ correction for the thermal DBI action at weak and strong coupling we find that the $3/4$ factor well-known from the AdS/CFT correspondence extends to the case of arbitrary electric and magnetic fields on the D3-brane. We investigate the reason for this by taking the decoupling limit in both the open and the closed string descriptions thus showing that the AdS/CFT correspondence extend…
In a weak coupling limit the neighborhood of $E_6$ Yukawa points in $SU(5)$ GUT F-theory models is described by a non-resolvable orientifold of the conifold. We explicitly show, first directly in IIB and then via a mirror symmetry argument, that in this limit the $E_6$ Yukawa coupling is better described as coming from the non-perturbative contribution of a euclidean D1-brane wrapping the non-resolvable cycle. We also discuss how the M-theory description interpolates between the weak and strong coupling viewpoints.
We compute the two closed string graviton - two open string scalar scattering amplitude on the disc to show that there is no second-derivative curvature - scalar coupling term R X^2 in the low-energy effective action of a D-brane in curved space in type II superstring theory.
In this paper we study two classes of symmetric D-branes in the Nappi-Witten gravitational wave, namely D2 and $S 1$ branes. We solve the sewing constraints and determine the bulk-boundary couplings and the boundary three-point couplings. For the D2 brane our solution gives the first explicit results for the structure constants of the twisted symmetric branes in a WZW model. We also compute the boundary four-point functions, providing examples of open string four-point amplitudes in a curved background. We finally discuss the annulus amplitudes, the relation with branes in $AdS_3$ and in $S^3$…
Motivated by the desire to do proper model building with D7-branes and fluxes, we study the motion of D7-branes on a Calabi-Yau orientifold from the perspective of F-theory. We consider this approach promising since, by working effectively with an elliptically fibred M-theory compactification, the explicit positioning of D7-branes by (M-theory) fluxes is straightforward. The locations of D7-branes are encoded in the periods of certain M-theory cycles, which allows for a very explicit understanding of the moduli space of D7-brane motion. The picture of moving D7-branes on a fixed underlying spa…
Using the linear T-dual ward identity associated with the NSNS gauge transformations, some RR couplings on D$_p$-branes have been found at order $O(α'^2)$. We examine the $C^{(p-1)}$ couplings with the S-matrix elements of one RR, one graviton and one antisymmetric B-field vertex operators. We find the consistency of T-dual S-matrix elements and explicit results of scattering string amplitude and show that the string amplitude reproduces these couplings as well as some other couplings. This illustration is found for $C^{(p-3)}$ couplings in the literature which is extended to the $C^{(p-1)}$ c…
We first point out to all order $α'$ corrections to lower order fermionic couplings and their effective actions of type II super string theory. In order to reveal all symmetries of the particular D-brane Anti-D-brane system, and to construct not only all the singularity structures but also all order $α'$ corrections of fermionic couplings to tachyons, we employ all the Conformal Field Theory (CFT) methods to a six point function. Basically, we construct all the correlation functions of four spin operators and two world sheet fermion fields. The S-matrix of two fermion fields, two real tachyons…
We analyse Randall-Sundrum two D-brane model by linear perturbation and then consider the linearised gravity on the D-brane. The qualitative contribution from the Kaluza-Klein modes of gauge fields to the coupling to the gravity on the brane will be addressed. As a consequence, the gauge fields localised on the brane are shown not to contribute to the gravity on the brane at large distances. Although the coupling between gauge fields and gravity appears in the next order, the ordinary coupling cannot be realised.
The gauge-fixed action of a `spacetime-filling' D3-brane with dilaton-axion coupling is formulated in N=1 superspace. We investigate its symmetries by paying special attention to a possible non-linearly realized extra (hidden) supersymmetry, and emphasize the need of a linear superfield coupled to an abelian Chern-Simons superfield to represent a dilaton-axion supermultiplet in the off-shell manifestly supersymmetric approach.
We discuss SU(5) Grand Unified Theories in the context of orientifold compactifications. Specifically, we investigate two and three D-brane stack realizations of the Georgi-Glashow and the flipped SU(5) model and analyze them with respect to their Yukawa couplings. As pointed out in arXiv:0909.0271 the most economical Georgi-Glashow realization based on two stacks generically suffers from a disastrous large proton decay rate. We show that allowing for an additional U(1) D-brane stack this as well as other phenomenological problems can be resolved. We exemplify with globally consistent Georgi-G…
Coupling of a membrane and a five-brane to the bosonic sector of D=11 supergravity is considered. The five--brane is a dyonic object which carries both an electric and a magnetic charge of the D=11 three-form gauge field $A^3$, and it couples not only to $A^3$ but also minimally couples to a six-form field $A^6$ dual to $A^3$. This implies that the 5-brane should more naturally couple to a version of D=11 supergravity where both gauge fields are present in a duality-symmetric fashion. We demonstrate how an action of duality-symmetric D=11 supergravity looks like, couple it to the five-brane an…
Non-trivial configurations of Yang-Mills fields and gravitational backgrounds induce charges on Dp-branes that couple them to lower and higher RR potentials. We show that these couplings can be described in a systematic and coordinate independent way by using Clifford multiplication. In the minimal formulation, D-brane charges and RR potentials combine into bispinors of an SO(1,9) which is defined with a flat metric and does not coincide with the space-time Lorentz group. In a non-minimal formulation, the RR potentials combine into SO(10,10) spinors while the space of charges is formally enlar…
We study the case of brane world models with an additional Gauss-Bonnet term in the presence of a bulk scalar field which interacts non-minimally with gravity, via a possible interaction term of the form $-1/2 ξR ϕ^2$. The Einstein equations and the junction conditions on the brane are formulated, in the case of the bulk scalar field. Static solutions of this model are obtained by solving numerically the Einstein equations with the appropriate boundary conditions on the brane. Finally, we present graphically and comment these solutions for several values of the free parameters of the model.
By explicit evaluation of certain disk S-matrix elements in the presence of background B-flux, we find coupling of two open string tachyons to gauge field, graviton, dilaton or Kalb-Ramond antisymmetric tensor on the world-volume of a single non-BPS D$p$-brane. We then propose an extension of the abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action which naturally reproduces these couplings in field theory. This action includes non-linearly the dynamics of the tachyon field much like the other bosonic modes of the non-BPS D$p$-brane. On the general grounds of gauge and T-duality transformations and the symmetrize…
Motivated by the dimensional asymmetry characteristic of braneworlds, we populate the bulk spacetime with matter scalar fields, both real and complex, and couple them non-minimally to gravity. We derive the effective equations of motion on the brane and realize the case when the fields acquire a non-vanishing vacuum expectation value. This entails a change in the effective cosmological constant and in the effective mass of the scalar fields. We find that the non-minimal coupling provides a mechanism for generating spontaneous symmetry breaking at Planck energies on the brane. This mechanism is…
By examining in details the disk level S-matrix element of one massless RR and one NSNS states at order O(α'^2), we find the coupling of one RR and one NSNS fields on the world volume of a D$_p$-brane. The non-zero couplings involve the first derivative of the RR field strengths F^{(p)}, F^{(p+2)} and F^{(p+4)}. We then fix the on-shell ambiguity of the couplings by requiring consistency with the linear T-duality transformations. Moreover, consistency with the non-linear T-duality requires that the RR field strength in the above couplings to be {\cal F}=d{\cal C} where {\cal C}=e^{B}C.
Brane-induced gravity in five dimensions (Dvali--Gabadadze--Porrati model) exhibits modification of gravity at ultra-large distances, $r\gg r_c = M_{Pl}^2/M^3$ where $M$ is the five-dimensional gravity scale. This makes the model potentially interesting for explaining the observed acceleration of the Universe. We argue, however, that it has an intrinsic intermediate energy scale $(M^9/M_{Pl}^4)^{1/5}$. At higher energies, the model is strongly coupled. For $r_c$ of order of the present Hubble size, the strong coupling regime occurs at distanced below tens of metres.
We use the superspace formulation of supergravity in eleven and ten dimensions to compute fermion couplings on the M2-brane and on D$p$-branes. In this formulation fermionic couplings arise naturally from the $θ$-expansion of the superfields from which the brane actions are constructed. The techniques we use and develop can in principle be applied to determine the fermionic couplings to general background fields up to arbitrary order. Starting with the superspace formulation of 11-dimensional supergravity, we use a geometric technique known as the `normal coordinate' method to obtain the $θ$-e…
Decoupling limits of physical interest occur in regions of space--time where the string coupling diverges. This is illustrated in the celebrated example of five-branes. There are several ways to overcome this strong-coupling problem. We review those which are somehow related to two-dimensional conformal field theories. One method consists of distributing the branes over transverse space, either on a circle or over a sphere. Those distributions are connected to conformal field theories by T-dualities or lead to a new kind of sigma model where the target space is a patchwork of pieces of exact c…
