Strong stellar magnetic fields are believed to truncate the inner accretion disks around young stars, redirecting the accreting material to the high latitude regions of the stellar surface. In the past few years, observations of strong stellar fields on T Tauri stars with field strengths in general agreement with the predictions of magnetospheric accretion theory have bolstered this picture. Currently, nothing is known about the magnetic field properties of younger, more embedded Class I young stellar objects (YSOs). It is believed that protostars accrete much of their final mass during the Class I phase, but the physics governing this process remains poorly understood. Here, we use high resolution near infrared spectra obtained with NIRSPEC on Keck and with Phoenix on Gemini South to measure the magnetic field properties of the Class I protostar WL 17. We find clear signatures of a strong stellar magnetic field. Analysis of this data suggests a surface average field strength of $2.9 \pm 0.43$ kG on WL 17. We present our field measurements and discuss how they fit with the general model of magnetospheric accretion in young stars.

One critical remaining issue to unclear the initial mass function of the first (Population III) stars is the final fate of secondary protostars formed in the accretion disk, specifically whether they merge or survive. We focus on the magnetic effects on the first star formation under the cosmological magnetic field. We perform a suite of ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations until 1000 years after the first protostar formation. Instead of the sink particle technique, we employ a stiff equation of state approach to represent the magnetic field structure connecting to protostars. Ten years after…
We present VLA observations toward the Class 0 protostar L1157 MMS at 6.8 mm and 9 mm with a resolution of ~0.04" (14 au). We detect two sources within L1157 MMS and interpret these sources as a binary protostar with a separation of ~16 au. The material directly surrounding the binary system within the inner 50 au radius of the system has an estimated mass of 0.11 M_sun, calculated from the observed dust emission. We interpret the observed binary system in the context of previous observations of its flattened envelope structure, low rates of envelope rotation from 5000 to 200 au scales, and an…
We study the evolution of magnetic fields in accretion flows around six different sink particles in a global star formation simulation. Using the adaptive mesh refinement capabilities of \ramses, the vicinity of the sinks is resolved with a resolution down to $2$ AU. The statistical properties of the magnetic field are tracked as a function of radius, height and time around each sink particle. All six systems are strongly magnetised with plasma beta being unity or below and we know that at least three of the sinks host an accretion disc. One of the discs is studied at a higher resolution of $0…
Protostellar flares are rapid magnetic energy release events associated with formation of hot plasma in protostars. In the previous models of protostellar flares, the interaction between a protostellar magnetosphere with the surrounding disk plays crucial roles in building-up and releasing the magnetic energy. However, it remains unclear if protostars indeed have magnetospheres because vigorous disk accretion and strong disk magnetic fields in the protostellar phase may destroy the magnetosphere. Considering this possibility, we investigate the energy accumulation and release processes in the …
We present our current understanding of the formation and early evolution of protostars, protoplanetary disks, and the driving of outflows as dictated by the interplay of magnetic fields and partially ionized gas in molecular cloud cores. In recent years, the field has witnessed enormous development through sub-millimeter observations which in turn have constrained models of protostar formation. As a result of these observations % that the observations provided, the state-of-the-art theoretical understanding of the formation and evolution of young stellar objects is described. In particular, w…
Non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic effects that rule the coupling of the magnetic field to the circumstellar gas during the low-mass star formation process depend heavily on the local physical conditions, such as the ionization fraction of the gas. The purpose of this work is to observationally characterize the level of ionization of the circumstellar gas at small envelope radii and investigate its relation to the efficiency of the coupling between the star-forming gas and the magnetic field in the Class 0 protostar B335. We have obtained molecular line emission maps of B335 with ALMA, which we use…
Context. The importance of the magnetic field in high-mass-star formation is not yet fully clear and there are still many open questions concerning its role in the accretion processes and generation of jets and outflows. In the past few years, masers have been successfully used to probe the magnetic field morphology and strength at scales of a few au around massive protostars, by measuring linear polarisation angles and Zeeman splitting. The massive protostar IRAS 18089-1732 is a well studied high-mass-star forming region, showing a hot core chemistry and a disc-outflow system. Previous SMA ob…
Recent observations uncover various phenomena around the protostar such as misalignment between the outflow and magnetic field, precession of the jet, and time variability of the ejected clumps, whose origins are under debate. We perform a three-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulation of the protostar formation in a star-forming core whose rotation axis is tilted at an angle $45^\circ$ with respect to the initial magnetic field, in which the protostar is resolved with a spatial resolution of $0.01\,$au. In low-dense outer region, the prestellar core contracts along the magnetic f…
Starting from a prestellar core with a size of $1.2\times10^4$ AU, we calculate the evolution of a gravitationally collapsing core until $\sim2000$ yr after protostar formation using a three-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulation, in which the protostar is resolved with a spatial resolution of $5.6\times10^{-3}$ AU. Following protostar formation, a rotationally supported disk is formed. Although the disk size is as small as $\sim2-4$ AU, it remains present until the end of the simulation. Since the magnetic field dissipates and the angular momentum is then not effectively transfe…
Context. Class 0 protostars represent the earliest evolutionary stage of solar-type stars, during which the majority of the system mass resides in an infalling envelope of gas and dust and is not yet in the central, nascent star. Although X-rays are a key signature of magnetic activity in more evolved protostars and young stars, whether such magnetic activity is present at the Class 0 stage is still debated. Aims. We aim to detect a bona fide Class 0 protostar in X-rays. Methods. We observed HOPS 383 in 2017 December in X-rays with the Chandra X-ray Observatory ($\sim$84 ks) and in near-infrar…
Recent theoretical studies have suggested that a magnetic field may play a crucial role in the first star formation in the universe. However, the influence of the magnetic field on the first star formation has yet to be understood well. In this study, we perform three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations taking into account all the relevant cooling processes and non-equilibrium chemical reactions up to the protostar density, in order to study the collapse of magnetized primordial gas cores with self-consistent thermal evolution. Our results show that the thermal evolution of the central…
The role of the magnetic field during protostellar collapse is poorly constrained from an observational point of view, although it could be significant if we believe state-of-the-art models of protostellar formation. We present polarimetric observations of the 233 GHz thermal dust continuum emission obtained with ALMA in the B335 Class 0 protostar. Linearly polarized dust emission arising from the circumstellar material in the envelope of B335 is detected at all scales probed by our observations, from radii of 50 to 1000 au. The magnetic field structure producing the dust polarization has a ve…
We conducted IRAM-30m C18O (2-1) and SMA 1.3mm continuum, 12CO (2-1), and C18O (2-1) observations toward the Class 0/I protostar L1455 IRS1 in Perseus. The IRAM results show L1455 IRS1 located in a dense core of 0.05 pc in size with a mass of 0.54M_sun, connecting to a filamentary structure. Inside the dense core, compact components of 350 AU and 1500 AU are detected in the SMA 1.3 mm continuum and C18O, with a velocity gradient in the latter one perpendicular to a bipolar outflow in 12CO, likely tracing a rotational motion. We measure a rotational velocity profile ~ r^-0.75 that becomes shall…
To assess the potential role of magnetic fields in regulating the envelope rotation and the fragmentation of Class 0 protostars, we carried out observations of the dust polarized emission at 0.87 mm with the SMA, in the envelopes of a large sample of 20 Class 0 protostars. We estimate the mean magnetic field orientation over the central 1000 au envelope scales and compared it to that of the protostellar outflow in order to study the relation between their misalignment and the kinematics of the circumstellar gas. We discover a strong relationship between the misalignment of the magnetic field o…
We present our observational results of the 0.87 mm polarized dust emission in the Class 0 protostar B335 obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at a 0.2" (20 au) resolution. We compared our data at 0.87 mm with those at 1.3 mm from the ALMA archive. The observed polarization orientations at the two wavelengths are consistent within the uncertainty, and the polarization percentages are systematically higher at 1.3 mm than 0.87 mm by a factor of ~1.7, suggesting that the polarized emission originates from magnetically aligned dust grains. We inferred the magnetic …
The evidence of a relation between the mass accretion rate and the disk mass is established for young, Class II pre-main sequence stars. This observational result opened an avenue to test theoretical models and constrain the initial conditions of the disk formation, fundamental in the understanding of the emergence of planetary systems. However, it is becoming clear that the planet formation starts even before the Class II stage, in disks around Class 0 and I protostars. We show for the first time evidence for a correlation between the mass accretion rate and the disk mass for a large sample o…
We report results from twelve simulations of the collapse of a molecular cloud core to form one or more protostars, comprising three field strengths (mass-to-flux ratios, μ, of 5, 10, and 20) and four field geometries (with values of the angle between the field and rotation axes, θ, of 0°, 20°, 45°, and 90°), using a smoothed particle magnetohydrodynamics method. We find that the values of both parameters have a strong effect on the resultant protostellar system and outflows. This ranges from the formation of binary systems when μ = 20 to strikingly differing outflow structures for differing v…
We present our analysis of the magnetic field structures from 6000 au to 100 au scales in the Class 0 protostar B335 inferred from our JCMT POL-2 observations and the ALMA archival polarimetric data. To interpret the observational results, we perform a series of (non-)ideal MHD simulations of the collapse of a rotating non-turbulent dense core, whose initial conditions are adopted to be the same as observed in B335, and generate synthetic polarization maps. The comparison of our JCMT and simulation results suggests that the magnetic field on a 6000 au scale in B335 is pinched and well aligned …
We present the first resolved observations of the 1.3mm polarized emission from the disk-like structure surrounding the high-mass protostar Cepheus A HW2. These CARMA data partially resolve the dust polarization, suggesting an uniform morphology of polarization vectors with an average position angle of 57 degrees and an average polarization fraction of 2.0%. The distribution of the polarization vectors can be attributed to (1) the direct emission of magnetically aligned grains of dust by a uniform magnetic field, or (2) the pattern produced by the scattering of an inclined disk. We show that b…

We present the full disk-fit results VANDAM survey of all Class 0 and I protostars in the Perseus molecular cloud. We have 18 new protostellar disk candidates around Class 0 and I sources, which are well described by a simple, parametrized disk model fit to the 8 mm VLA dust-continuum observations. 33% of Class 0 protostars and just 11% of Class I protostars have candidate disks, while 78% of Class 0 and I protostars do not have signs of disks within our 12 AU disk diameter resolution limit, indicating that at 8 mm most disks in the Class 0 and I phases are <10 AU in radius. These small radii …
Star formation in magnetically subcritical clouds is investigated using a three-dimensional non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamics simulation. Since rapid cloud collapse is suppressed until the magnetic flux is sufficiently removed from the initially magnetically subcritical cloud by ambipolar diffusion, it takes > 5-10t_ff to form a protostar, where t_ff is the freefall timescale of the initial cloud. The angular momentum of the star forming cloud is efficiently transferred to the interstellar medium before the rapid collapse begins, and the collapsing cloud has a very low angular momentum. Unlike t…
To study transportation of magnetic flux from large to small scales in protostellar sources, we analyzed the Nobeyama 45-m N2H+ (1-0), JCMT 850 um polarization, and ALMA C18O (2-1) and 1.3 mm and 0.8 mm (polarized) continuum data of the Class 0 protostar HH 211. The magnetic field strength in the dense core on a 0.1 pc scale was estimated with the single-dish line and polarization data using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, and that in the protostellar envelope on a 600 au scale was estimated from the force balance between the gravity and magnetic field tension by analyzing the gas kinema…
We investigate the possibility of the growth of magnetorotational instability (MRI) in disks around Class 0 protostars. We construct a disk model and calculate the chemical reactions of neutral and charged atoms, molecules and dust grains to derive the abundance of each species and the ionization degree of the disk. Then, we estimate the diffusion coefficients of non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics effects such as ohmic dissipation, ambipolar diffusion and the Hall effect. Finally, we evaluate the linear growth rate of MRI in each area of the disk. We investigate the effect of changes in the streng…
Measuring polarization from thermal dust emission can provide constraints on the magnetic field structure around embedded protostars. However, interpreting the observations is challenging without models that consistently account for both the complexity of the protostellar birth environment and polarization mechanisms. We aim to provide a better understanding with a focus on bridge-like structures such as that observed towards the protostellar multiple IRAS 16293--2422 by comparing synthetic polarization maps of thermal reemission with observations. We analyze the magnetic field properties asso…
The formation and early evolution of low mass young stellar objects (YSOs) are investigated using three-dimensional non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamics simulations. We investigate the evolution of YSOs up to ~ 10^4 yr after protostar formation, at which protostellar mass reaches ~ 0.1 M_\odot . We particularly focus on the impact of the dust model on the evolution. We found that a circumstellar disk is formed in all simulations regardless of the dust model. Disk size is approximately 10 AU at the protostar formation epoch, and it increases to several tens of AU at ~ 10^4 yr after protostar formati…
At least half of a protostar's mass is accreted in the Class 0 phase, when the central protostar is deeply embedded in a dense, infalling envelope. We present the first systematic search for outbursts from Class 0 protostars in the Orion clouds. Using photometry from Spitzer/IRAC spanning 2004 to 2017, we detect three outbursts from Class 0 protostars with $\ge 2$ mag changes at 3.6 or 4.5 $μ$m. This is comparable to the magnitude change of a known protostellar FU Ori outburst. Two are newly detected bursts from the protostars HOPS 12 and 124. The number of detections implies that Class 0 prot…
