We present a numerical study of the diffusion of energy at high temperature in strongly disordered chains of interacting classical spins evolving deterministically. We find that quenched randomness strongly suppresses transport, with the diffusion constant becoming reduced by several orders of magnitude upon the introduction of moderate disorder. We have also looked for but not found signs of a classical many-body localization transition at any nonzero strength of the spin-spin interactions.
A long-standing problem of the low-energy dynamics of a disordered XY spin chain is re-examined. The case of a rigid chain is studied where the quantum effects can be treated quasiclassically. It is shown that as the frequency decreases, the relevant excitations change from localized spin waves to two-level systems to soliton-antisoliton pairs. The linear-response correlation functions are calculated. The results apply to other periodic glassy systems such as pinned density waves, planar vortex lattices, stripes, and disordered Luttinger liquids.
We develop a procedure which systematically generates all conserved operators in the disordered models of interacting fermions. Among these operators, we identify and count the independent and local integrals of motion (LIOM) which represent the hallmark of the many-body localization (MBL). The method is tested first on the prototype disordered chain of interacting spinless fermions. As expected for full MBL, we find for large enough disorder $N_M=2^M-1$ independent and quasi-local LIOM with support on $M$ consecutive sites. On the other hand, the study of the disordered Hubbard chain reveals …
We study the disordered Heisenberg spin chain, which exhibits many body localization at strong disorder, in the weak to moderate disorder regime. A continued fraction calculation of dynamical correlations is devised, using a variational extrapolation of recurrents. Good convergence for the infinite chain limit is shown. We find that the local spin correlations decay at long times as $C \sim t^{-β}$, while the conductivity exhibits a low frequency power law $σ\sim ω^α$. The exponents depict sub-diffusive behavior $ β< 1/2, α> 0 $ at all finite disorders, and convergence to the scaling result, $…
Topological insulators supporting non-abelian anyonic excitations are at the center of attention as candidates for topological quantum computation. In this paper, we analyze the ground-state properties of disordered non-abelian anyonic chains. The resemblance of fusion rules of non-abelian anyons and real space decimation strongly suggests that disordered chains of such anyons generically exhibit infinite-randomness phases. Concentrating on the disordered golden chain model with nearest-neighbor coupling, we show that Fibonacci anyons with the fusion rule $τ\otimesτ={\bf 1}\oplus τ$ exhibit tw…
Topological phases supporting non-abelian anyonic excitations have been proposed as candidates for topological quantum computation. In this paper, we study disordered non-abelian anyonic chains based on the quantum groups $SU(2)_k$, a hierarchy that includes the $ν=5/2$ FQH state and the proposed $ν=12/5$ Fibonacci state, among others. We find that for odd $k$ these anyonic chains realize infinite randomness critical {\it phases} in the same universality class as the $S_k$ permutation symmetric multi-critical points of Damle and Huse (Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 277203 (2002)). Indeed, we show that t…
A quantum particle propagates subdiffusively on a strongly disordered chain when it is coupled to itinerant hard-core bosons. We establish a generalized Einstein relation (GER) that relates such subdiffusive spread to an unusual time-dependent drift velocity, which appears as a consequence of a constant electric field. We show that GER remains valid much beyond the regime of the linear response. Qualitatively, it holds true up to strongest drivings when the nonlinear field-effects lead to the Stark-like localization. Numerical calculations based on full quantum evolution are substantiated by m…
Phononless plasmon assisted transport through a long disordered array of finite length quantum wires is investigated analytically. Two temperature regimes, the low- and the high-temperature ones, with qualitatively different temperature dependencies of thermally activated resistance are identified. The characteristics of plasmon assisted and phonon assisted transport mechanisms are compared. Generically strong electron-electron interaction in quantum wires results in a qualitative change of the temperature dependence of thermally activated resistance in comparison to phonon assisted transport.…
Temperature dependent transport of disordered electronic systems is examined in the presence of strong correlations. In contrast to what is assumed in Fermi liquid approaches, finite temperature behavior in this regime proves largely dominated by inelastic electron-electron scattering. This conclusion is valid in the strong coupling limit, where the disorder, the correlations and the Fermi energy are all comparable, as in many materials near the metal-insulator transition.
We study a quantum particle coupled to hard-core bosons and propagating on disordered ladders with $R$ legs. The particle dynamics is studied with the help of rate equations for the boson-assisted transitions between the Anderson states. We demonstrate that for finite $R < \infty$ and sufficiently strong disorder the dynamics is subdiffusive, while the two-dimensional planar systems with $R\to \infty$ appear to be diffusive for arbitrarily strong disorder. The transition from diffusive to subdiffusive regimes may be identified via statistical fluctuations of resistivity. The corresponding dist…
We explore the physics of the disordered XYZ spin chain using two complementary numerical techniques: exact diagonalization (ED) on chains of up to 17 spins, and time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) on chains of up to 400 spins. Our principal findings are as follows. First, the clean XYZ spin chain shows ballistic energy transport for all parameter values that we investigated. Second, for weak disorder there is a stable diffusive region that persists up to a critical disorder strength that depends on the XY anisotropy. Third, for disorder strengths above this critical value energy transport b…
This chapter addresses the question of quantum entanglement in disordered chains, focusing on the von-Neumann and Rényi entropies for three important classes of random systems: Anderson localized, infinite randomness criticality, and many-body localization (MBL). We review previous works, and also present new results for the entanglement entropy of random spin chains at low and high energy.
We study the disordered XYZ spin chain using the recently developed Spectrum Bifurcation Renormalization Group (SBRG) numerical method. With strong disorder, the phase diagram consists of three many body localized (MBL) spin glass phases. We argue that, with sufficiently strong disorder, these spin glass phases are separated by marginally many-body localized (MBL) critical lines. We examine the critical lines of this model by measuring the entanglement entropy and Edwards-Anderson spin glass order parameter, and find that the critical lines are characterized by an effective central charge c'=l…
We consider the propagation of a single particle in a random chain, assisted by the coupling to dispersive bosons. Time evolution treated with rate equations for hopping between localized states reveals a qualitative difference between dynamics due to noninteracting bosons and hard-core bosons. In the first case the transient dynamics is subdiffusive, but multi-boson processes allow for long-time normal diffusion, while hard-core effects suppress multi-boson processes leading to persistent subdiffusive transport, consistent with numerical results for a full many-body evolution. In contrast, an…
We study the difference between on site Hubbard and long range Coulomb repulsions for two interacting particles in a disordered chain. While Hubbard repulsion can only yield weak critical chaos with intermediate spectral statistics, Coulomb repulsion can drive the two particle system to quantum chaos with Wigner-Dyson spectral statistics. For intermediate strengths U of the two repulsions in one dimension, there is a crossover regime where delocalization and spectral rigidity are maximum, whereas the limits of weak and strong U are characterized by a stronger localization and uncorrelated ener…
Using a numerically exact technique we study spin transport and the evolution of spin-density excitation profiles in a disordered spin-chain with long-range interactions, decaying as a power-law, $r^{-α}$ with distance and $α<2$. Our study confirms the prediction of recent theories that the system is delocalized in this parameters regime. Moreover we find that for $α>3/2$ the underlying transport is diffusive with a transient super-diffusive tail, similarly to the situation in clean long-range systems. We generalize the Griffiths picture to long-range systems and show that it captures the esse…
We study a frustrated mixed spin chain with side chains, where the spin species and the exchange interactions are spatially varied. A nonlinear sigma model method is formulated for this model, and a phase diagram with two disordered spin-gap phases is obtained for typical cases. Among them we examine the case with a main chain consisting of an alternating array of spin-1 and spin-1/2 sites and side chains each of a single spin-1/2 site in great detail. Based on numerical, perturbational, and variational approaches, we propose a singlet cluster solid picture for each phase, where the ground sta…
We use the two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to study the effects of frustration in Heisenberg models for $S=1/2$ to S=4 in a two-dimensional anisotropic lattice. We find that as in $S=1/2$ studied previously, the system is made of nearly disconnected chains at the maximally frustrated point, $J_d/J_{\perp}=0.5$, i.e., the transverse spin-spin correlations decay exponentially. This leads to the following consequences: (i) all half-integer spins systems are gapless, behaving like a sliding Luttinger liquid as in $S=1/2$; (ii) for integer spins, there is an intermediate disord…
The curvatures of two-particle energy levels with respect to the enclosed magnetic flux in mesoscopic disordered rings are investigated numerically. We find that the typical value of the curvatures is increased by interactions in the localised regime and decreased in the metallic regime. This confirms a prediction by Akkermans and Pichard (Eur. Phys. J. B 1, 223 (1998)). The interaction-induced changes of the typical curvatures at different energies and disorder strengths exhibit one-parameter scaling with a conductance-like single parameter. This suggests that interactions could influence the…
This work studies heat transport of bond-disordered spin-1/2 chains. As an example, the XX case is analyzed, which corresponds to a model of noninteracting spinless fermions. Within the fermion representation, the single-particle eigenenergies are determined numerically, which allow one to compute transport coefficients. Since the ballistic transport properties of a clean chain are destroyed by disorder, the focus is on the frequency dependence of the thermal conductivity and on a qualitative comparison with the spin conductivity, both at finite temperatures.
We study sample-to-sample fluctuations of the gap ratio in the energy spectra in finite disordered spin chains. The chains are described by the random-field Ising model and the Heisenberg model. We show that away from the ergodic/nonergodic crossover, the fluctuations are correctly captured by the Rosenzweig-Porter (RP) model. However, fluctuations in the microscopic models significantly exceed those in the RP model in the vicinity of the crossover. We show that upon introducing an extension to the RP model, one correctly reproduces the fluctuations in all regimes, i.e., in the ergodic and non…
The effect of interchain hopping and interaction on Anderson localization has been investigated for two coupled chains of spinless fermions with nearest neighbor interaction. Using the renormalization group method, we find that interchain hopping plays a significant role when the correlation gap induced by the interplay of interchain hopping and intrachain interaction becomes larger than the Anderson localization energy scale induced by impurities. The strong competition between localization and delocalization is examined for attractive interaction.
Neutron diffraction and bulk measurements are used to determine the nature of the low-temperature ordered state in LiCu$_2$O$_2$, a $S=1/2$ spin-chain compound with competing interactions. The magnetic structure is found to be helimagnetic, with a propagation vector $(0.5,ζ,0)$, $ζ=0.174$. The nearest-neighbor exchange constant and frustration ratio are estimated to be $J=5.8$ meV and $J_2/J_1=0.29$, respectively. For idealized spin chains these parameter values would signify a gapped spin-liquid ground state. Long-range ordering is attributed to intrinsic non-stoichiometry.
We uncover a novel mechanism for inducing a gapful phase in interacting many-body quantum chains. The mechanism is nonperturbative, being triggered only in the presence of both strong interactions and strong aperiodic (disordered) modulation. In the context of the critical antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ chain, we identify an emerging dimerization which removes the system from criticality and stabilizes the novel phase. This mechanism is shown to be quite general in strongly interacting quantum chains in the presence of strongly modulated quasiperiodic disorder which is, surprisingly, perturbat…
We report on the magnetic structures of Tb3RuO7 and Nd3RuO7 determined from powder neutron-diffraction experiments. In Tb3RuO7, alternating-bond spin-3/2 Ru1-Ru2 chains are formed. The Ru1 and Ru2 moments are ordered and disordered (paramagnetic), respectively, below 15 K. This result indicates the appearance of a partially disordered (PD) state, although the two Ru sites are very similar to each other. In Nd3RuO7, the Ru1 and Ru2 ions form independent uniform chains. Both the Ru1 and Ru2 moments are ordered below 17.5 K. Probably, the main source of the PD state in Tb3RuO7 is the magnetic fru…
We have constructed a phase diagram in temperature-magnetic field-disorder space for homogeneously disordered superconducting tantalum thin films. Phases are phenomenologically identified by the nonlinear transport characteristics that are unique in each phase. The resulting phase diagram shows that a direct superconductor-insulator transition is prohibited at any disorder because the superconducting phase is completely surrounded by the intervening metallic phase.
We present numerical results within the one-dimensional disordered Hubbard model for several characteristic indicators of the many-body localization (MBL). Considering traditionally studied charge disorder (i.e., the same disorder strength for both spin orientations) we find that even at strong disorder all signatures consistently show that while charge degree of freedom is non-ergodic, the spin is delocalized and ergodic. This indicates the absence of the full MBL in the model that has been simulated in recent cold-atom experiments. Full localization can be restored if spin-dependent disorder…
Studies of disordered spin chains have recently experienced a renewed interest, inspired by the question to which extent the exact numerical calculations comply with the existence of a many-body localization phase transition. For the paradigmatic random field Heisenberg spin chains, many intriguing features were observed when the disorder is considerable compared to the spin interaction strength. Here, we introduce a phenomenological theory that may explain some of those features. The theory is based on the proximity to the noninteracting limit, in which the system is an Anderson insulator. Ta…
We study the electronic transport in the lowest Landau level of disordered two-dimensional semimetals placed in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. The material system is modeled by the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang Hamiltonian, which has zero energy Landau modes due to the material's intrinsic Berry curvature. These turn out to be crucially important for the density of states and the static conductivity of the disordered system. We develop an analytical approach to the diffusion and conductivity based on a self-consistent equation of motion for the mean squared displacement. The obtained valu…
Transport properties of disordered carbon nanotubes are investigated with including long range Coulomb interactions. The resistivity and optical conductivity are calculated by using the memory functional method. In addition, the effect of localization is taken into account by use of the renormalization group analysis and it is shown that the backward scattering of the intra-valley and that of the inter-valley cannot coexist in the localized regime.
Electronic instabilities in transition metal compounds often spontaneously form orbital molecules, which consist of orbital-coupled metal ions at low temperature. Recent local structural studies utilizing the pair distribution function revealed that preformed orbital molecules appear disordered even in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase. However, it is unclear whether preformed orbital molecules are dynamic or static. Here, we provide clear experimental evidence of the slow dynamics of disordered orbital molecules realized in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase of LiVS2, which exhibit…
We study disorder-induced ergodicity breaking transition in high-energy eigenstates of interacting spin-1/2 chains. Using exact diagonalization we introduce a cost function approach to quantitatively compare different scenarios for the eigenstate transition. We study ergodicity indicators such as the eigenstate entanglement entropy and the spectral level spacing ratio, and we consistently find that an (infinite-order) Kosterlitz-Thouless transition yields a lower cost function when compared to a finite-order transition. Interestingly, we observe that the transition point in finite systems exhi…
We study thermal transport in the disordered Fermi liquid at low temperatures. Gravitational potentials are used as sources for finding the heat density and its correlation function. For a comprehensive study, we extend the renormalization group (RG) analysis developed for electric transport by including the gravitational potentials into the RG scheme. Our analysis reveals that the Wiedemann-Franz law remains valid even in the presence of quantum corrections caused by the interplay of diffusion modes and the electron electron interaction. In the present scheme this fundamental relation is clos…
We derive and study the effective spin model that explains the anomalous spin dynamics in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with strong potential disorder. Assuming that charges are localized, we show that spins are delocalized and their subdiffusive transport originates from a singular random distribution of spin exchange interactions. The exponent relevant for the subdiffusion is determined by the Anderson localization length and the density of electrons. While the analytical derivations are valid for low particle density, numerical results for the full model reveal a qualitative agreement u…
We investigate electron transport in disordered Hubbard chains contacted to macroscopic leads, via the non-equilibrium Green's functions technique. We observe a cross-over of currents and conductances at finite bias which depends on the relative strength of disorder and interactions. The finite-size scaling of the conductance is highly dependent on the interaction strength, and exponential attenuation is not always seen. We provide a proof that the Coherent Potential Approximation, a widely used method for treating disorder averages, fulfils particle conservation at finite bias with or without…
