We present a harmonic expansion of the observed line-of-sight velocity field as a method to recover and investigate spiral structures in the nuclear regions of galaxies. We apply it to the emission-line velocity field within the circumnuclear starforming ring of NGC1097, obtained with the GMOS-IFU spectrograph. The radial variation of the third harmonic terms are well described by a logarithmic spiral, from which we interpret that the gravitational potential is weakly perturbed by a two-arm spiral density wave with inferred pitch angle of of 52+/-4 degrees. This interpretation predicts a two-arm spiral distortion in the surface brightness, as hinted by the dust structures in central images of NGC1097, and predicts a combined one-arm and three-arm spiral structure in the velocity field, as revealed in the non-circular motions of the ionised gas within the circumnuclear region of this galaxy. Next, we use a simple spiral perturbation model to constrain the fraction of the measured non-circular motions that is due to radial inflow. We combine the resulting inflow velocity with the gas density in the spiral arms, inferred from emission line ratios, to estimate the mass inflow rate as a function of radius, which reaches about 0.011 Msun/yr at a distance of 70 pc from the center. This value corresponds to a fraction of about 4.2 x 10^{-3} of the Eddington mass accretion rate onto the central black hole in this LINER/Seyfert1 galaxy. We conclude that the line-of-sight velocity not only can provide a cleaner view of nuclear spirals than the associated dust, but that the presented method also allows the quantitative study of these possibly important links in fueling the centers of galaxies, including providing a handle on the mass inflow rate as a function of radius.
We targeted the massive star forming region W33A using the Atacama Large Sub/Millimeter Array (ALMA) in band 6 (230 GHz) and 7 (345 GHz) to search for a sub-1000au disc around the central O-type massive young stellar object (MYSO) W33A MM1-Main. Our data achieves a resolution of ~0.2" (~500au) and resolves the central core, MM1, into multiple components and reveals complex and filamentary structures. There is strong molecular line emission covering the entire MM1 region. The kinematic signatures are inconsistent with only Keplerian rotation although we propose that the shift in the emission li…
We report on Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO(3-2) emission in the Seyfert2/starburst galaxy NGC1808, at a spatial resolution of 4pc. Our aim is to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the gas inside the central 0.5kpc and to probe the nuclear feeding and feedback phenomena. We discovered a nuclear spiral of radius 1"=45pc. Within it, we found a decoupled circumnuclear disk or molecular torus of a radius of 0.13"=6pc. The HCN(4-3) and HCO$\rm^+$(4-3) and CS(7-6) dense gas line tracers were simultaneously mapped and detected in the nuclear spiral and they present t…
We report ALMA observations of CO(3-2) emission in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 1566, at a spatial resolution of 25 pc. Our aim is to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the gas inside the central kpc, and to probe nuclear fueling and feedback phenomena. NGC 1566 has a nuclear bar of 1.7 kpc radius and a conspicuous grand design spiral starting from this radius. The ALMA field of view, of diameter 0.9 kpc, lies well inside the nuclear bar and reveals a molecular trailing spiral structure from 50 to 300~pc in size, which is contributing to fuel the nucleus, according to its negative gravity …
We study the spiral arm influence on the solar neighbourhood stellar kinematics. As the nature of the Milky Way (MW) spiral arms is not completely determined, we study two models: the Tight-Winding Approximation (TWA) model, which represents a local approximation, and a model with self-consistent material arms named PERLAS. This is a mass distribution with more abrupt gravitational forces. We perform test particle simulations after tuning the two models to the observational range for the MW spiral arm properties. We explore the effects of the arm properties and find that a significant region o…
We present the results of a kinematic study of planetary nebulae in the extreme outskirts of two spiral galaxies, M83 (NGC 5236) and M94 (NGC 4736). We find that in the inner regions of the galaxies, the vertical velocity dispersion (sigma_z) falls off exponentially with the light, as expected for a constant mass-to-light ratio, constant thickness disk. However, starting at four optical scale lengths, sigma_z asymptotes out at roughly 20 km/s. Our analysis finds evidence for significant flaring in the outer regions as well, especially in M94. These observations are in excellent agreement with …
We study the phase space available to the local stellar distribution using a Galactic potential consistent with several recent observational constraints. We find that the induced phase space structure has several observable consequences. The spiral arm contribution to the kinematic structure in the solar neighborhood may be as important as the one produced by the Galactic bar. We suggest that some of the stellar kinematic groups in the solar neighborhood, like the Hercules structure and the kinematic branches, can be created by the dynamical resonances of self-gravitating spiral arms and not e…
We use the Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) to map the stellar kinematics of the inner few hundred parsecs of a sample of 16 nearby Seyfert galaxies, at a spatial resolution of tens of parsecs and spectral resolution of 40 km/s. We find that the line-of-sight (LOS) velocity fields for most galaxies are well reproduced by rotating disk models. The kinematic position angle (PA) derived for the LOS velocity field is consistent with the large scale photometric PA. The residual velocities are correlated with the hard X-ray luminosity, suggesting that more luminous AGN have a …
We present a kinematical study of the nearly edge-on galaxy ESO 379-G006 that shows the existence of extraplanar ionized gas. With Fabry-Perot spectroscopy at H-alpha, we study the kinematics of ESO 379-G006 using velocity maps and position-velocity diagrams parallel to the major and to the minor axis of the galaxy. We build the rotation curve of the disk and discuss the role of projection effects due to the fact of viewing this galaxy nearly edge-on. The twisting of the isovelocities in the radial velocity field of the disk of ESO 379-G006 as well as the kinematic asymmetries found in some po…
We present observations of 50 pairs of redshift z ~ 0.2 star-forming galaxies and background quasars. These sightlines probe the circumgalactic medium (CGM) out to half the virial radius, and we describe the circumgalactic gas kinematics relative to the reference frame defined by the galactic disks. We detect halo gas in MgII absorption, measure the equivalent-width-weighted Doppler shifts relative to each galaxy, and find that the CGM has a component of angular momentum that is aligned with the galactic disk. No net counter-rotation of the CGM is detected within 45 degrees of the major axis a…
The Milky Way spiral arms are well established from star counts as well as from the locus of molecular clouds and other young objects, however, they have only recently started to be observed from a kinematics point of view. Using the kinematics of thin disc stars in Gaia EDR3 around the extended solar neighbourhood, we create x-y projections coloured by the radial, residual rotational, and vertical Galactocentric velocities ($U,ΔV,W$). The maps are rich in substructures and reveal the perturbed state of the Galactic disc. We find that local differences between rotational velocity and the azimu…
We have observed an N-body/Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulation of a Milky Way like barred spiral galaxy. We present a simple method that samples N-body model particles into mock Gaia stellar observations and takes into account stellar populations, dust extinction and Gaia's science performance estimates. We examine the kinematics around a nearby spiral arm at a similar position to the Perseus arm at three lines of sight in the disc plane; (l,b)=(90,0), (120,0) and (150,0) degrees. We find that the structure of the peculiar kinematics around the co-rotating spiral arm, which is found in …
We study the dynamics of galaxy mergers, with emphasis on the gas feeding of nuclear regions, using a suite of hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy encounters. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the simulations allows us to not only recover the standard picture of tidal-torque induced inflows, but also to detail another, important feeding path produced by ram pressure. The induced shocks effectively decouple the dynamics of the gas from that of the stars, greatly enhancing the loss of gas angular momentum and leading to increased central inflows. The ram-pressure shocks also cause, in…
We compare the observed radial velocity of different arm tracers, taken near the tangent to a spiral arm. A slight difference is predicted by the density wave theory, given the shock predicted at the entrance to the inner spiral arm. In many of these spiral arms, the observed velocity offset confirms the prediction of the density wave theory (with a separation between the maser velocity and the CO gas peak velocity, of about 20 km/s) - when the observed offset is bigger than the error estimates. The time to reach the next spiral arm is given.
Relations between star formation rates along the spiral arms and the velocities of gas inflow into the arms in grand-design galaxy NGC 628 were studied. We found that the radial distribution of average star formation rate in individual star formation regions in regular spiral arms correlates with the velocity of gas inflow into the spiral arms. Both distributions have maxima at a galactocentric distance of 4.5-5 kpc. There are no correlations between the radial distributions of average star formation rate in star formation regions in spiral arms and outside spiral arms in the main disc. We als…
We study the gas distribution and kinematics of the inner kpc of six moderately luminous (43.43$\leq$log$L_{\rm bol}\leq$44.83) nearby ($0.004 \leq z \leq 0.014$) Seyfert galaxies observed with the Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) in the J(1.25$μ$m) and K(2.2$μ$m) bands. We analyse the most intense emission lines detected on these spectral wavebands: [Fe II] 1.2570 $μ$m and Pa$β$, which trace the ionised gas in the partially and fully ionised regions, and H$_2$2.1218$μ$m, that traces the hot ($\sim 2000$ K) molecular gas. The dominant kinematic component is rotation in the disc…
The kinematic dispersions of disc stars can be used to measure the dynamic contributions of baryons to the rotation curves of spiral galaxies and hence to trace the amount and distribution of the remaining dark matter. However, the simple single-component infinite disc model traditionally used to convert stellar dispersions to mass-densities is no longer adequate. The dark matter halo has a significant effect upon the stellar dispersions for any non-maximal disc. The correction for cuspy dark matter halos is particularly large, suggesting that such models are not consistent with the observed s…

We analyze the motion of stars in the direction perpendicular to the galactic plane following a spiral arm passage. We show that the fast change in the vertical galactic potential causes a thermalized distribution to develop a distinctive "ringing"-like non-thermal signature. We use A and F-stars from the extended Hipparocos catalogue to show that a spiral arm passage (or passages), with an amplitude (or randomly combined amplitudes) of at least δρ / ρ > ~0.15 must have taken place in the past (with ρ being the total background density). Presently, the local stellar distribution within ~100 pc…
(Abridged) We present mass models of a sample of 14 spiral and 14 S0 galaxies that constrain their stellar and dark matter content. For each galaxy we derive the stellar mass distribution from near-infrared photometry under the assumptions of axisymmetry and a constant Ks-band stellar mass-to-light ratio, (M/L)_Ks. To this we add a dark halo assumed to follow a spherically symmetric NFW profile and a correlation between concentration and dark mass within the virial radius, M_DM. We solve the Jeans equations for the corresponding potential under the assumption of constant anisotropy in the meri…
We present near-infrared emission-line flux distributions, excitation and kinematics, as well as stellar kinematics, of the inner 520x520 pc2$ of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC5929. The observations were performed with the Gemini's Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) at a spatial resolution of 20 pc and spectral resolution of 40km/s in the J- and K-bands. The flux distributions of H2, [FeII], [PII] and recombination lines are extended over most of the field of view, with the highest intensity levels observed along PA=60/240deg, and well correlated with the radio emission. The H2 and [Fe…
We use an N-body simulation to study the 3-D density distribution of spirals, and the resulting stellar vertical velocities. Relative to the disc's rotation, the phase of the spiral's peak density away from the mid-plane trails that at the mid-plane. In addition, at fixed radius the density distribution is azimuthally skewed, having a shallower slope on the trailing side inside corotation and switching to shallower on the leading side beyond corotation. The spirals induce non-zero average vertical velocities, <V_z>, as large as <V_z> ~ 10-20 km/s, consistent with recent observations in the Mil…
The kinematic complexity and the favorable position of M51 on the sky make this galaxy an ideal target to test different theories of spiral arm dynamics. Taking advantage of the new high resolution PdBI Arcsecond Whirlpool Survey (PAWS) data, we undertake a detailed kinematic study of M51 to characterize and quantify the origin and nature of the non-circular motions. Using a tilted-ring analysis supported by several other archival datasets we update the estimation of M51's position angle (PA=(173 +/- 3) deg) and inclination (i=(22 +/- 5) deg). Harmonic decomposition of the high resolution (40 …
We study the kinematics and scaling relations of a sample of 43 giant spiral galaxies that have stellar masses exceeding $10^{11}$ $M_\odot$ and optical discs up to 80 kpc in radius. We use a hybrid 3D-1D approach to fit 3D kinematic models to long-slit observations of the H$α$-[NII] emission lines and we obtain robust rotation curves of these massive systems. We find that all galaxies in our sample seem to reach a flat part of the rotation curve within the outermost optical radius. We use the derived kinematics to study the high-mass end of the two most important scaling relations for spiral …
The outskirts of galaxies - especially the very extended HI disks of galaxies - are strongly affected by their local environment. I highlight the giant 2X-HI disks of nearby galaxies (M 83, NGC 3621, and NGC 1512), studied as part of the Local Volume HI Survey (LVHIS), their kinematics and relation to XUV disks, signatures of tidal interactions and accretion events, the MHI - DHI relation as well as the formation of tidal dwarf galaxies. - Using multi-wavelength data, I create 3D visualisations of the gas and stars in galaxies, with the shape of their warped disks obtained through kinematic mo…
We present optical $\textit{BVRI}$ photometry, H$α$ IFU velocity fields, and H$α$ long-slit rotation curves for a sample of four nearby spiral galaxies having a range of morphologies and inclinations. We show that the $\texttt{DiskFit}$ code can be used to model the photometric and kinematic data of these four galaxies and explore how well the photometric data can be decomposed into structures like bars and bulges and to look for non-circular motions in the kinematic data. In general, we find good agreement between our photometric and kinematic models for most parameters. We find the best cons…
The gravitational field of Spiral galaxies is well traced by their rotation curves. Only recently it has become of extreme interest that the latter form a family ruled by two parameters of the {\it luminous} component: the disk length-scale $R_D$ and the magnitude $M_I$. This evidence is so strong and consequential that it must be taken as the starting point for the investigation on the issue of the dark matter in galaxies. The emerging fact is that structural quantities deeply rooted in the luminous components, like the disk length scales are found to tightly correlate with structural quantit…
We present the mass distribution of a sample of 121 nearby galaxies with high quality optical velocity fields and available infra-red $\it{WISE}$ 3.4 $μ$m data. Contrary to previous studies, this sample covers all morphological types and is not biased toward late-type galaxies. These galaxies are part of the Fabry-Perot kinematical $\it{GHASP}$ survey of spirals and irregular nearby galaxies. Combining the kinematical data to the $\it{WISE}$ surface brightness data probing the emission from the old stellar population, we derive mass models allowing us to compare the luminous to the dark matter…
Hydrodynamic simulations suggest that galactic gas disks form when coplanar gas spirals into the inner regions of the disk. We recently presented a simple "modified accretion disk" model of viscous galactic disks in which star-formation is fed by a radial flow of gas. However, little observational evidence has been presented for such inflows, which are expected to be only a few km s$^{-1}$ in the central regions of the disk, i.e. within three disk scale-lengths, but could reach of order 50-100 km s$^{-1}$ in the very outer disk. The effects of systematic inflow on the 2-d velocity field are ex…
We present a two-dimensional mapping of the gas flux distributions, as well as of the gas and stellar kinematics in the inner 220 pc of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2110, using K-band integral field spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini NIFS at a spatial resolution of ~24pc and spectral resolution of ~40 km/s. The H2 emission extends over the whole field-of-view and is attributed to heating by X-rays from the AGN and/or by shocks, while the Brgamma emission is restricted to a bi-polar region extending along the South-East-North-West direction. The masses of the warm molecular gas and of the ionized …
We applied the currently most comprehensive version of the statistical-parallax technique to derive kinematical parameters of the maser sample with 136 sources. Our kinematic model comprises the overall rotation of the Galactic disk and the spiral density-wave effects. We take into account the variation of radial velocity dispersion with Galactocentric distance. The best description of the velocity field is provided by the model with constant radial and vertical velocity dispersions, $(σU0, σW0) \approx (9.4 \pm 0.9~, 5.9 \pm 0.8)~ km/s$. We compute flat Galactic rotation curve over the Galact…
We present a kinematical study of 29 spiral galaxies included in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies, using Halpha Fabry-Perot data obtained with the Galaxy Halpha Fabry-Perot System instrument at the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, complemented with images in the R-band and in Halpha. The primary goal is to study the evolution and properties of the main structural components of galaxies through the kinematical analysis of the FP data, complemented with studies of morphology, star formation and mass distribution. In this paper we describe how the FP data have been obtai…
Much of our understanding of dark matter halos comes from the assumption that the mass-to-light ratio (M/L) of spiral disks is constant. The best way to test this hypothesis is to measure the disk surface mass density directly via the kinematics of old disk stars. To this end, we have used planetary nebulae (PNe) as test particles and have measured the vertical velocity dispersion (sigma_z) throughout the disks of five nearby, low-inclination spiral galaxies: IC 342, M74 (NGC 628), M83 (NGC 5236), M94 (NGC 4736), and M101 (NGC 5457). By using HI to map galactic rotation and the epicyclic appro…
With the advent of the Gaia data, the unprecedented kinematic census of great part of the Milky Way disc will allow us to characterise the local kinematic groups and new groups in different disc neighbourhoods. First, we show here that the models predict a stellar kinematic response to the spiral arms and bar strongly dependent on disc position. For example, we find that the kinematic groups induced by the spiral arm models change significantly if one moves only ~ 0.6 kpc in galactocentric radius, but ~ 2 kpc in azimuth. There are more and stronger groups as one approaches the spiral arms. Dep…
We model the effects of the spiral arms of the Milky Way on the disk stellar kinematics in the Gaia observable space. We also estimate the Gaia capabilities of detecting the predicted signatures. We use both controlled orbital integrations in analytic potentials and self-consistent simulations. We introduce a new strategy, which consists of comparing the stellar kinematics of symmetric Galactic longitudes (+l and -l), in particular the median transverse velocity (from parallaxes and proper motions). This approach does not require the assumption of an axisymmetric model. The typical differences…
We present a kinematic study of the nuclear stellar disk in M31 at infrared wavelengths using high spatial resolution integral field spectroscopy. The spatial resolution achieved, FWHM = 0."12 (0.45 pc at the distance of M31), has only previously been equaled in spectroscopic studies by space-based long-slit observations. Using adaptive optics-corrected integral field spectroscopy from the OSIRIS instrument at the W. M. Keck Observatory, we map the line-of-sight kinematics over the entire old stellar eccentric disk orbiting the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at a distance of r<4 pc. The peak v…
Mass models of 100 nearby spiral and irregular galaxies, covering morphological types from Sa to Irr, are computed using H$α$ rotation curves and R$_c$-band surface brightness profiles. The kinematics was obtained using a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. One of the aims is to compare our results with those from Korsaga et al. (2018), which used mid-infrared (MIR) WISE W1 (3.4 $μ$m) photometric data. For the analysis, the same tools were used for both bands. Pseudo-Isothermal (ISO) core and Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) cuspy models have been used. We test Best Fit Models (BFM), Maximum Disc Mo…
Supermassive Black Holes grow at the center of galaxies in consonance with them. In this review we discuss the mass feeding mechanisms that lead to this growth in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), focusing on constraints derived from observations of their environment, from extragalactic down to galactic and nuclear scales. At high AGN luminosities, galaxy mergers and interactions play an important role in AGN triggering and feeding. However, gas chaotic cold accretion (CCA) in galaxy clusters can trigger radiatively inefficient AGNs in brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). At lower luminosities, mino…
We present the first complete, velocity-resolved [CII] 158um image of the M51 grand-design spiral galaxy, observed with the upGREAT instrument on SOFIA. [CII] is an important tracer of various phases of the interstellar medium (ISM), including ionized gas, neutral atomic, and diffuse molecular regions. We combine the [CII] data with HI, CO, 24um dust continuum, FUV, and near-infrared K-band observations to study the evolution of the ISM across M51's spiral arms in both position-position, and position-velocity space. Our data show strong velocity gradients in HI, 12CO, and [CII] at the location…
We investigate the evolution of the Tully-Fisher relation out to z=1 with 137 emission-line galaxies in the field that display a regular rotation curve. They follow a linear trend with lookback time being on average brighter by 1.1Bmag and 60% smaller at z=1. For a subsample of 48 objects with very regular gas kinematics and stellar structure we derive a TF scatter of 1.15mag, which is two times larger than local samples exhibit. This is probably due to modest variations in their star formation history and chemical enrichment. In another study of 96 members of Abell 901/902 at z=0.17 and 86 fi…
The distributions of the pairwise line-of-sight velocity between galaxies and their host clusters are segregated according to the galaxy's colour and morphology. We investigate the velocity distribution of red-spiral galaxies, which represents a rare population within galaxy clusters. We find that the probability distribution function of the pairwise line-of-sight velocity $v_{\rm{los}}$ between red-spiral galaxies and galaxy clusters has a dip at $v_{\rm{los}} = 0$, which is a very odd feature, at 93\% confidence level. To understand its origin, we construct a model of the phase space distrib…
We investigate models of the Milky Way disc taking into account simultaneously the bar and a two-armed quasi-static spiral pattern. Away from major resonance overlaps, the mean stellar radial motions in the plane are essentially a linear superposition of the isolated effects of the bar and spirals. Thus, provided the bar is strong enough, even in the presence of spiral arms, these mean radial motions are predominantly affected by the Galactic bar for large scale velocity fluctuations. This is evident when comparing the peculiar line-of-sight velocity power spectrum of our coupled models with b…
The kinematics of the outer rings and pseudorings is determined by two processes: the resonance tuning and the gas outflow. The resonance kinematics is clearly observed in the pure rings, while the kinematics of the gas outflow is manifested itself in the pseudorings. The direction of systematical motions in the pure rings depends on the position angle of a point with respect to the bar major axis and on the class of the outer ring. The direction of the radial and azimuthal components of the residual velocities of young stars in the Perseus, Carina, and Sagittarius regions can be explained by …

We measure the Tully-Fisher relations of 14 lenticular galaxies (S0s) and 14 spirals. We use two measures of rotational velocity. One is derived directly from observed spatially-resolved stellar kinematics and the other from the circular velocities of mass models that include a dark halo and whose parameters are constrained by detailed kinematic modelling. Contrary to the naive expectations of theories of S0 formation, we find no significant difference between the Tully-Fisher relations of the two samples when plotted as functions of both brightness and stellar mass.
Based on published sources, we have created a kinematic database on 220 massive (>10 solar masses) young Galactic star systems located within <3 kpc of the Sun. Out of them, approximately 100 objects are spectroscopic binary and multiple star systems whose components are massive OB stars; the remaining objects are massive Hipparcos B stars with parallax errors of no more than 10 percent. Based on the entire sample, we have constructed the Galactic rotation curve, determined the circular rotation velocity of the solar neighborhood around the Galactic center at Ro=8 kpc, Vo=259+-16 km/s, and obt…
We tested the distances derived from the equivalent widths of interstellar CaII spectral lines by Megier et al. 2009. To this end, we used a sample of nearby 126 young OB3 stars ($r<1$ kpc) with known proper motions and line-of-site velocities. It is shown that these stars are tightly bounded with the Gould Belt structure. Most part of this sample (about 100 stars) show the same kinematics as the sample of distant OB3 stars. Their galactocentric radial velocities are in good agreement with the following spiral density wave parameters: amplitude of radial perturbations $f_R\approx$12 km/s, wave…
The recent discovery of a spiral pattern in the vertical kinematic structure in the solar neighborhood provides a prime opportunity to study non-equilibrium dynamics in the Milky Way from local stellar kinematics. Furthermore, results from simulations indicate that even in a limited volume, differences in stellar orbital histories allow us to trace variations in the initial perturbation across large regions of the disk. We present $\texttt{ESCARGOT}$, a novel algorithm for studying these variations in both simulated and observed data sets. $\texttt{ESCARGOT}$ automatically extracts key quantit…
We use Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of the galaxy cluster MACS J1149.5+2223 to explore the kinematics of the grand-design spiral galaxy Sp1149 hosting the SN Refsdal. Sp1149 lies at $z\simeq1.49$, has a stellar mass $M_*\simeq5\times10^9 \, \mathrm{M_\odot}$, a star-formation rate $\mathrm{SFR} \simeq1-6 \, \mathrm{M_\odot/yr}$ and represents a likely progenitor of a Milky-Way-like galaxy. All the four multiple images of Sp1149 in our data show strong OII-line emissions pointing to a clear rotation pattern. We take advantage of the gravitational lensing magnification e…
We infer the central mass distributions within 0.4-1.2 disc scale lengths of 18 late-type spiral galaxies using two different dynamical modelling approaches - the Asymmetric Drift Correction (ADC) and axisymmetric Jeans Anisotropic Multi-gaussian expansion (JAM) model. ADC adopts a thin disc assumption, whereas JAM does a full line-of-sight velocity integration. We use stellar kinematics maps obtained with the integral-field spectrograph SAURON to derive the corresponding circular velocity curves from the two models. To find their best-fit values, we apply Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) metho…
The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy with the Schechter characteristic luminosity $L_*$, thus an important anchor point of the Hubble sequence of all spiral galaxies. Yet the true appearance of the Milky Way has remained elusive for centuries. We review the current best understanding of the structure and kinematics of our home galaxy, and present an updated scientifically accurate visualization of the Milky Way structure with almost all components of the spiral arms, along with the COBE image in the solar perspective. The Milky Way contains a strong bar, four major spiral arms, and an additional a…
We present the mass models of 31 spiral and irregular nearby galaxies obtained using hybrid rotation curves (RCs) combining high resolution GHASP Fabry-Perot H$α$ RCs and extended WHISP HI ones together with 3.4 $μ$m WISE photometry. The aim is to compare the dark matter (DM) halo properties within the optical radius using only H$α$ RCs with the effect of including and excluding the mass contribution of the neutral gas component, and when using HI or hybrid RCs. Pseudo-isothermal (ISO) core and Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) cuspy DM halo profiles are used with various fiducial fitting procedures. …
I discuss feeding and feedback processes observed in the inner few hundred parsecs of nearby active galaxies using integral field spectroscopy at spatial resolutions of a few to tens of parsecs. Signatures of feedback include outflows from the nucleus with velocities ranging from 200 to 1000km/s, with mass outflow rates between 0.5 and a few Msun/yr. Signatures of feeding include the observation of gas inflows along nuclear spirals and filaments, with velocities ranging from 50 to 100km/s and mass flow rates from 0.1 to 1 Msun/yr. These rates are 2--3 orders of magnitude larger than the mass a…
For spiral galaxies, the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and some physical parameters that concern the host galaxy such as spiral arm radius and density can play an important role in the morphological evolution of these galaxies. Considering the gravitational effect of the central black hole as a feeding mechanism, the gas flows from spiral arms to the accretion disk. Accordingly, we constructed our approach and derived an equation for the AGN luminosity that depends on parameters such as the black hole mass and the spiral arm density. The galaxy samples were taken from a catalog of type 1 AGN f…
