We study a class of slow-fast Hamiltonian systems with any finite number of degrees of freedom, but with at least one slow one and two fast ones. At $% ε=0$ the slow dynamics is frozen. We assume that the frozen system (i.e. the unperturbed fast dynamics) has families of hyperbolic periodic orbits with transversal heteroclinics.
For each periodic orbit we define an action $J.$ This action may be viewed as an action Hamiltonian (in the slow variables). It has been shown in (N. Brännström, V.Gelfreich (2008)) that there are orbits of the full dynamics which shadow any \emph{finite} combination of forward orbits of $J$ for a time $t=O(ε^{-1})$.
We introduce an assumption on the mutual relationship between the actions $J.$ This assumption enables us to shadow any continuous curve (of arbitrary length) in the slow phase space for any time. The slow dynamics shadows the curve as a purely geometrical object, thus the time on the slow dynamics has to be reparameterised.
We prove that the geodesic flow on closed surfaces displays a hyperbolic set if the shadowing property holds C2-robustly on the metric. Similar results are obtained when considering even feeble properties like the weak shadowing and the specification properties. Despite the Hamiltonian nature of the geodesic flow, the arguments in the present paper differ completely from those used in [5] for Hamiltonian systems.

Consider a symplectic map which possesses a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold of any even dimension with transverse homoclinic channels. We develop a topological shadowing argument to prove the existence of Arnold diffusion along the invariant manifold, shadowing some iterations of the inner dynamics carried by the invariant manifold and the outer dynamics induced by the stable and unstable foliations. In doing so, we generalise an idea of Gidea and de la Llave in [26], based on the method of correctly aligned windows and a so-called transversality-torsion argument. Our proof permits that…
The aim of this note is to prove a result of effective stability for a non-autonomous perturbation of an integrable Hamiltonian system, provided that the perturbation depends slowly on time. Then we use this result to clarify and extend a stability result of Giorgilli and Zehnder for a mechanical system with an arbitrary time-dependent potential.
The aim of this paper is to extend the results of Giorgilli and Zehnder for aperiodic time dependent systems to a case of general nearly-integrable convex analytic Hamiltonians. The existence of a normal form and then a stability result are shown in the case of a slow aperiodic time dependence that, under some smallness conditions, is independent on the size of the perturbation.
In the first part of the paper we introduce some geometric tools needed to describe slow-fast Hamiltonian systems on smooth manifolds. We start with a smooth Poisson bundle $p: M\to B$ of a regular (i.e. of constant rank) Poisson manifold $(M,ω)$ over a smooth symplectic manifold $(B,λ)$, the foliation into leaves of the bundle coincides with the symplectic foliation generated by the Poisson structure on $M$. This defines a singular symplectic structure $Ω_{\varepsilon}=$ $ω+ \varepsilon^{-1}p^*λ$ on $M$ for any positive small $\varepsilon$, where $p^*λ$ is a lift of 2-form $λ$ on $M$. Given a…
We consider a slow-fast Hamiltonian system with one fast angular variable (a fast phase) whose frequency vanishes on some surface in the space of slow variables (a resonant surface). Systems of such form appear in the study of dynamics of charged particles in inhomogeneous magnetic field under influence of a high-frequency electrostatic waves. Trajectories of the averaged over the fast phase system cross the resonant surface. The fast phase makes $\sim \frac {1}{\varepsilon}$ turns before arrival to the resonant surface ($\varepsilon$ is a small parameter of the problem). An asymptotic formula…
We study the drift of slow variables in a slow-fast Hamiltonian system with several fast and slow degrees of freedom. For any periodic trajectory of the fast subsystem with the frozen slow variables we define an action. For a family of periodic orbits, the action is a scalar function of the slow variables and can be considered as a Hamiltonian function which generates some slow dynamics. These dynamics depend on the family of periodic orbits. Assuming the fast system with the frozen slow variables has a pair of hyperbolic periodic orbits connected by two transversal heteroclinic trajectories, …
This paper studies a class of $1\frac12$-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems with a slowly varying phase that unfolds a Hamiltonian pitchfork bifurcation. The main result of the paper is that there exists an order of $\ln^2ε^{-1}$-many periodic orbits that all stay within an $\mathcal O(ε^{1/3})$-distance from the union of the normally elliptic slow manifolds that occur as a result of the bifurcation. Here $ε\ll 1$ measures the time scale separation. These periodic orbits are predominantly unstable. The proof is based on averaging of two blowup systems, allowing one to estimate the effect of…
We consider a finite region of a lattice of weakly interacting geodesic flows on manifolds of negative curvature and we show that, when rescaling the interactions and the time appropriately, the energies of the flows evolve according to a non linear diffusion equation. This is a first step toward the derivation of macroscopic equations from a Hamiltonian microscopic dynamics in the case of weakly coupled systems.
We present a coordinate-free approach for constructing approximate first integrals of generalized slow-fast Hamiltonian systems, based on the global averaging method on parameter-dependent phase spaces with $\mathbb{S}^1 -$symmetry. Explicit global formulas for approximate second-order first integrals are derived. As examples, we analyze the case quadratic in the fast variables (in particular, the elastic pendulum), and the charged particle in a slowly-varying magnetic field.
We show that nonrelativsitic scaling of the collisionless Vlasov-Maxwell system implies the existence of a formal invariant slow manifold in the infinite-dimensional Vlasov-Maxwell phase space. Vlasov-Maxwell dynamics restricted to the slow manifold recovers the Vlasov-Poisson and Vlasov-Darwin models as low-order approximations, and provides higher-order corrections to the Vlasov-Darwin model more generally. The slow manifold may be interpreted to all orders in perturbation theory as a collection of formal Vlasov-Maxwell solutions that do not excite light waves, and are therefore "dark". We p…
We consider a 2 d.o.f. Hamiltonian system with one degree of freedom corresponding to fast motion and the other corresponding to slow motion. The ratio of the time derivatives of slow and fast variables is of order $0<\eps \ll 1$. At frozen values of the slow variables there is a separatrix on the phase plane of the fast variables and there is a region in the phase space (the domain of separatrix crossings) where the projections of phase points onto the plane of the fast variables repeatedly cross the separatrix in the process of evolution of the slow variables. Under a certain symmetry condit…
A class of fast-slow Hamiltonian systems with potential $U_\varepsilon$ describing the interaction of non-ergodic fast and slow degrees of freedom is studied. The parameter $\varepsilon$ indicates the typical timescale ratio of the fast and slow degrees of freedom. It is known that the Hamiltonian system converges for $\varepsilon\to0$ to a homogenised Hamiltonian system. We study the situation where $\varepsilon$ is small but positive. First, we rigorously derive the second-order corrections to the homogenised (slow) degrees of freedom. They can be decomposed into explicitly given terms that …
It is well known that instabilities of nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems occur around resonances. Dynamics near resonances of these systems is well approximated by the associated averaged system, called slow system. Each resonance is defined by a basis (a collection of integer vectors). We introduce a class of resonances whose basis can be divided into two well separated groups and call them dominant. We prove that the associated slow system can be well approximated by a subsystem given by one of the groups, both in the sense of the vector field and weak KAM theory. One of crucial ingredie…
Let the adiabatic invariant of action variable in slow-fast Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom have two limiting values along the trajectories as time tends to infinity. The difference of two limits is exponentially small in analytic systems. An iso-energetic reduction and canonical transformations are applied to transform the slow-fast systems to form of systems depending on slowly varying parameters in a complexified phase space. On the basis of this method an estimate for the accuracy of conservation of adiabatic invariant is given for such systems.
This article includes a short survey of selected averaging and dimension reduction techniques for deterministic fast-slow systems. This survey includes, among others, classical techniques, such as the WKB approximation or the averaging method, as well as modern techniques, such as the GENERIC formalism. The main part of this article combines ideas of some of these techniques and addresses the problem of deriving a reduced system for the slow degrees of freedom (DOF) of a fast-slow Hamiltonian system. In the first part, we derive an asymptotic expansion of the averaged evolution of the fast-slo…
In this paper we prove the existence of an almost invariant symplectic slow manifold for analytic Hamiltonian slow-fast systems with finitely many slow degrees of freedom for which the error field is exponentially small. We allow for infinitely many fast degrees of freedom. The method we use is motivated by a paper of MacKay from 2004. The method does not notice resonances, and therefore we do not pose any restrictions on the motion normal to the slow manifold other than it being fast and analytic. We also present a stability result and obtain a generalization of a result of Gelfreich and Lerm…
M. Kruskal showed that each nearly-periodic dynamical system admits a formal $U(1)$ symmetry, generated by the so-called roto-rate. We prove that such systems also admit nearly-invariant manifolds of each order, near which rapid oscillations are suppressed. We study the nonlinear normal stability of these slow manifolds for nearly-periodic Hamiltonian systems on barely symplectic manifolds -- manifolds equipped with closed, non-degenerate $2$-forms that may be degenerate to leading order. In particular, we establish a sufficient condition for long-term normal stability based on second derivati…
We point out a new view on slow invariant manifolds (SIM) in dynamical systems which departs from a purely geometric covariant characterization implying coordinate independency. The fundamental idea is to treat the SIM as a well-defined geometric object in phase space and elucidate characterizing geometric properties that can be evaluated as point-wise analytic criteria. For that purpose, we exploit curvature concepts and formulate our recent variational approach in terms of coordinate-independent Hamiltonian mechanics. Finally, we combine both approaches and conjecture a differential geometric…
We consider multiscale Hamiltonian systems in which harmonic oscillators with several high frequencies are coupled to a slow system. It is shown that the oscillatory energy is nearly preserved over long times eps^{-N} for arbitrary N>1, where eps^{-1} is the size of the smallest high frequency. The result is uniform in the frequencies and does not require non-resonance conditions.
