An innovative test for detecting quantum chaos based on the analysis of the spectral fluctuations regarded as a time series has been recently proposed. According to this test, the fluctuations of a fully chaotic system should exhibit 1/f noise, whereas for an integrable system this noise should obey the 1/f^2 power law. In this letter, we show that there is a family of well-known integrable systems, namely spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type, whose spectral fluctuations decay instead as 1/f^4. We present a simple theoretical justification of this fact, and propose an alternative characterization of quantum chaos versus integrability formulated directly in terms of the power spectrum of the spacings of the unfolded spectrum.
Classically integrable approximants are here constructed for a family of predominantly chaotic periodic systems by means of the Baker-Hausdorff-Campbell formula. We compare the evolving wave density for the corresponding exact quantum systems using semiclassical approximations based alternatively on the chaotic and on the integrable trajectories. It is found that the latter reproduce the quantum oscillations and provide superior approximations even when the initial coherent state is placed in a broad chaotic region. Time regimes are then accessed in which the propagation based on the system's …

Quantum chaotic and integrable systems are known to exhibit a characteristic $1/f$ and $1/f^{2}$ noise, respectively, in the power spectrum associated to their spectral fluctuations. A recent work [R. Riser, V. A. Osipov, and E. Kanzieper, \textit{Power Spectrum of Long Eigenlevel Sequences in Quantum Chaotic Systems}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{118}, 204101 (2017)] calls into question the approximations used to derive these results from random matrix theory. In this paper we show that such approximations do remain valid under almost any circumstances. For the integrable limit, we devise a proto…

We study signatures of quantum chaos in (1+1)D Quantum Field Theory (QFT) models. Our analysis is based on the method of Hamiltonian truncation, a numerical approach for the construction of low-energy spectra and eigenstates of QFTs that can be considered as perturbations of exactly solvable models. We focus on the double sine-Gordon, also studying the massive sine-Gordon and ${ϕ^4}$ model, all of which are non-integrable and can be studied by this method with sufficiently high precision from small to intermediate perturbation strength. We analyze the statistics of level spacings and of eigenv…
We present a quasi-integrable two-dimensional lattice equation: i.e., a partial difference equation which satisfies a criterion of integrability, singularity confinement, although it has a chaotic aspect in the sense that the degrees of its iterates exhibit exponential growth. By systematic reduction to one-dimensional systems, it gives a hierarchy of ordinary difference equations with confined singularities, but with positive algebraic entropy including a generalized form of the Hietarinta-Viallet mapping. We believe that this is the first example of such quasi-integrable equations defined ov…
We consider a quantum many-body system - the Bose-Hubbard system on three sites - which has a classical limit, and which is neither strongly chaotic nor integrable but rather shows a mixture of the two types of behavior. We compare quantum measures of chaos (eigenvalue statistics and eigenvector structure) in the quantum system, with classical measures of chaos (Lyapunov exponents) in the corresponding classical system. As a function of energy and interaction strength, we demonstrate a strong overall correspondence between the two cases. In contrast to both strongly chaotic and integrable syst…

The Painlevé transcendents discovered at the turn of the XX century by pure mathematical reasoning, have later made their surprising appearance -- much in the way of Wigner's "miracle of appropriateness" -- in various problems of theoretical physics. The notable examples include the two-dimensional Ising model, one-dimensional impenetrable Bose gas, corner and polynuclear growth models, one dimensional directed polymers, string theory, two dimensional quantum gravity, and spectral distributions of random matrices. In the present contribution, ideas of integrability are utilized to advocate eme…
In this paper, we study random features manifested in components of energy eigenfunctions of quantum chaotic systems, given in the basis of unperturbed, integrable systems. Based on semiclassical analysis, particularly on Berry's conjecture, it is shown that the components in classically allowed regions can be regarded as Gaussian random numbers in certain sense, when appropriately rescaled with respect to the average shape of the eigenfunctions. This suggests that, when a perturbed system changes from integrable to chaotic, deviation of the distribution of rescaled components in classically a…
The stationary wave functions of fast electrons axially channeling in the silicon crystal near [110] direction have been found numerically for integrable and non-integrable cases, for which the classical motion is regular and chaotic, respectively. The nodal structure of the wave functions in the quasi-classical region, where the energy levels density is high, is agreed with quantum chaos theory predictions.
Out-of-time-ordered correlation functions (OTOC's) are presently being extensively debated as quantifiers of dynamical chaos in interacting quantum many-body systems. We argue that in quantum spin and fermionic systems, where all local operators are bounded, an OTOC of local observables is bounded as well and thus its exponential growth is merely transient. As a better measure of quantum chaos in such systems, we propose, and study, the density of the OTOC of extensive sums of local observables, which can exhibit indefinite growth in the thermodynamic limit. We demonstrate this for the kicked …
We report on the experimental investigation of the properties of the eigenvalues and wavefunctions and the fluctuation properties of the scattering matrix of closed and open billiards, respectively, of which the classical dynamics undergoes a transition from integrable via almost integrable to fully chaotic. To realize such a system we chose a billiard with a 60 degree sector shape of which the classical dynamics is integrable, and introduced circular scatterers of varying number, size and position. The spectral properties of generic quantum systems of which the classical counterpart is either…
The competition between strength and correlation of coupling terms in a Hamiltonian defines numerous phenomenological models exhibiting spectral properties interpolating between those of Poisson (integrable) and Wigner-Dyson (chaotic) ensembles. It is important to understand how the off-diagonal terms of a Hamiltonian evolve as one or more symmetries of an integrable system are explicitly broken. We introduce a deformed Poisson ensemble to demonstrate an exact mapping of the coupling terms to the underlying symmetries of a Hamiltonian. From the maximum entropy principle we predict a chaotic li…
Based on the connection between the spectral form factor and the probability to return, the origin of the $1/f^α$-noise in fully chaotic and fully integrable systems is traced to the quantum interference between invariant manifolds of the classical dynamics and the dimensionality of those invariant manifolds. This connection and the order-to-chaos transition are analyzed in terms of the statistics of Floquet's quasienergies of a classically chaotic driving non-linear system. An immediate prediction of the connection established here is that in the presence of decoherence, the spectral exponent…
We derive and analyze a three dimensional model of a figure skater. We model the skater as a three-dimensional body moving in space subject to a non-holonomic constraint enforcing movement along the skate's direction and holonomic constraints of continuous contact with ice and pitch constancy of the skate. For a static (non-articulated) skater, we show that the system is integrable if and only if the projection of the center of mass on skate's direction coincides with the contact point with ice and some mild (and realistic) assumptions on the directions of inertia's axes. The integrability is …

The chaotic dynamics and its control under power law noise in Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS) resonators with electrostatic excitation are probed. On the basis of the stochastic Melnikov method in the mean-square sense and the mean largest Lyapunov exponent, the threshold value of power law noise intensity for the onset of chaos is obtained analytically and numerically. We show that the threshold of noise intensity decreases with the increasing of the frequency exponent of power law noise in the parameter space. Numerical simulations, such as phase diagram and time history, are employed…
The harmonic oscillator is an essential tool, widely used in all branches of Physics in order to understand more realistic systems, from classical to quantum and relativistic regimes. We know that the harmonic oscillator is integrable in Newtonian mechanics, whether forced, damped or multidimensional. On the other hand, it is known that relativistic, one-dimensional driven oscillators present chaotic behavior. However, there is no analogous result in the literature concerning relativistic conservative, two-dimensional oscillators. We consider in this paper different separable potentials for tw…
