In this letter we present a solution to describe simultaneously the light isoscalar and isovector vector mesons in constituent quark models. In Ref. [1] the $q\bar q$ spectrum was studied in a generalized constituent quark model constrained by the $NN$ phenomenology and the baryon spectrum. An overall good fit to the available experimental data was obtained. A major problem of this description was the relative position of the vector $ω$ and $ρ$ mesons. The present results improve the description of the isoscalar meson spectroscopy. They should serve as a step forward in distinguishing conventional quark model mesons from exotic states.
Electromagnetic splittings for mesons and baryons are calculated in a formalism where the constituent quarks are considered as dressed quasiparticles. The electromagnetic interaction, which contains coulomb, contact, and hyperfine terms, is folded with the quark electrical density. Two different types of strong potentials are considered. Numerical treatment is done very carefully and several approximations are discussed in detail. Our model contains only one free parameter and the agreement with experimental data is reasonable although it seems very difficult to obtain a perfect description in…
The constituent quarks are interpreted as bound states, which have an internal structure. The quark distributions of the proton are related to those of the constituent quarks. The experiments support this hypothesis. Likewise the spin structure of the proton is related to the spin structure of the constituent quarks. We find that about 30% of the spin of a constituent quark is given by the valence quark, and 70% are provided by the gluons.
We construct the full axial current of the constituent quarks by a summation of the infinite number of diagrams describing constituent-quark soft interactions. By requiring that the conservation of this current is violated only by terms of order $O(M_π^2)$, where $M_π$ is the mass of the lowest pseudoscalar $\bar QQ$ bound state, we derive important constraints on (i) the axial coupling $g_A$ of the constituent quark and (ii) the $\bar QQ$ potential at large distances. We define the chiral point of the constituent quark model as those values of the parameters, such as the masses of the constit…
We discuss the current mass dependence of the basic quantities of the quark models -- constituent quark mass M and quark condensate i<psi^dagger psi >. The framework of the consideration is QCD instanton vacuum model.
We review the theory and present status of the proton spin problem with emphasis on the transition between current quarks and constituent quarks in QCD.
We use the Constituent Quark Model (CQM) to describe CDF data on double parton cross section and HERA data on the $ J / Ψ$ ratio cross section of elastic and inelastic diffractive productions. Our estimate shows that the radius of the constituent quark turns out to be rather small, $R^2_{quark} \approx 0.1 Gev^{-2}$, in accordance with the assumption on which CQM is based.
We consider mechanism for hyperon polarization in inclusive production. The main role belongs to the orbital angular momentum and polarization of the strange quark-antiquark pairs in the internal structure of the constituent quarks. We consider a nucleon as a core consisting of the constituent quarks embedded into quark condensate. The nonperturbative hadron structure is based on the results of chiral quark models.
We apply color-spin and flavor-spin quark-quark interactions to the meson and baryon constituent quarks, and calculate constituent quark masses, as well as the coupling constants of these interactions. The main goal of this paper was to determine constituent quark masses from light and open bottom hadron masses, using the fitting method we have developed and clustering of hadron groups. We use color-spin Fermi-Breit (FB) and flavor-spin Glozman-Riska (GR) hyperfine interaction (HFI) to determine constituent quark masses (especially $b$ quark mass). Another aim was to discern between the FB and…
The constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow is studied in a non-equilibrium hadronization and freeze-out model with rapid dynamical transition from ideal, deconfined and chirally symmetric Quark Gluon Plasma, to final non-interacting hadrons. In this transition a Bag model of constituent quarks is considered, where the quarks gain constituent quark mass while the background Bag-field breaks up and vanishes. The constituent quarks then recombine into simplified hadron states, while chemical, thermal and flow equilibrium break down one after the other. In this scenario the resulting te…
We investigate the thermal behavior of quarks and antiquarks interacting via a temperature-dependent linear potential. The quarks are constituent quarks with dynamically generated masses from the background linear $σ$-model.We find a transition from a system of bound mesons to a correlated quark gas at the same temperature as the chiral transition temperature.
In a nonrelativistic constituent quark model we find a constraint on the mixing angle of the strange axial-vector mesons, $35^o\stackrel{<}{\sim } θ_K\stackrel{<}{\sim }55^o,$ determined solely by two parameters: the mass difference of the $a_1$ and $b_1$ mesons and the ratio of the constituent quark masses.
A simple picture of the constituent quark as a composite system of point-like partons is used to construct the unpolarized and polarized parton distributions by a convolution between constituent quark momentum distributions and constituent quark structure functions. We achieve good agreement with experiments in the unpolarized, as well as, in the polarized case. When our results are compared with similar calculations using non-composite constituent quarks, the accord with the experiments of the present scheme is impressive. We conclude that DIS data are consistent with a low energy scenario do…
Using a simple picture of the constituent quark as a composite system of point-like partons, we construct the parton distributions by a convolution between constituent quark momentum distributions and constituent quark structure functions. We evaluate the latter at a low hadronic scale with updated phenomenological information, and we build the momentum distributions using well-known quark models. The resulting parton distributions and structure functions are evolved to the experimental scale and good agreement with the available DIS data is achieved. When compared with a similar calculation u…
We propose a simple way to connect Gell-Mann constituent quark model and Feynman parton model for the nucleon. Thus, we can dynamically understand a large amount of data for high energy hadronic processes starting from the first QCD principle.
We define a constituent quark within QCD. It is shown that the spin of such a quark and hence also the spin of the nucleon reduced due to $\bar{q}q$-pairs, in agreement with experiment. A solution to the spin problem is given.
We analyze the mixing of the scalar glueball with the scalar-isoscalar quarkonia states above 1 GeV in a non-local covariant constituent approach. Similarities and differences to the point-particle Klein-Gordon limit and to the quantum mechanical case are elaborated. Model predictions for the two-photon decay rates in the covariant mixing scheme are indicated.
The axial-vector coupling $g_A$ of a constituent quark is estimated from matching the constituent quark model to the operator product expansion in QCD in the limit of large number of colours under some assumptions. The obtained relation is $g_A\simeq\sqrt{7/11}\approx0.80$, which is in agreement with the existing model estimates.
We use the color-spin and flavor-spin interaction Hamiltonians with SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking to obtain meson and baryon mass formulas. Adjusting these masses with experimental masses we determine the constituent quark masses. We discuss the constituent quark masses obtained from meson and baryon mass fits. The results for constituent quark masses are very similar in case of two different phenomenological models: Fermi-Breit and Glozman-Riska hyperfine interactions.
We discuss a nonperturbative mechanism for one-spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production. The main role in generation of this asymmetry belongs to the orbital angular momentum of quark-antiquark cloud in internal structure of constituent quarks.
A qualitative QCD analysis and a quantitative model calculation are given to show that the constituent quark model remains a good approximation even with the nucleon spin structure revealed in polarized deep inelastic scattering taking into account.
We study a stable, soliton-like solution in the linear $σ$-model where the chiral fields are coupled to a single massless nonstrange quark. We investigate a possibility that this solution represents the constituent quark of Georgi and Manohar. We show that its properties are indeed consistent with nucleon observables. Furthermore, we derive chiral meson exchange potentials between such objects which are similar to recently used potentials in the constituent quark models.
We calculate the electroweak properties of nucleons and hyperons in a relativistic constituent quark model using the light-front formalism. The parameters of the model, namely the constituent quark mass and the confinement scale, can be uniquely chosen for both the electromagnetic and weak experimental data. A consistent physical picture of the $qqq$ system appears in this work with a symmetric nucleon wave function and an asymmetric hyperon wave function. Only for the strangeness-changing weak decays do we need nontrivial form factors of the constituent quark.
Light constituent quark masses and the corresponding dynamical quark masses are determined by data, the Quark-Level Linear $σ$ Model, and infrared QCD. This allows to define effective nonstrange and strange current quark masses which reproduce the experimental pion and kaon masses very accurately, by simple additivity. Moreover, the masses of the light scalar mesons $σ(600)$ and $κ(800)$ can be obtained straightforwardly from the constituent quark masses. In contrast, the usual nonstrange and strange current quark masses employed by Chiral Perturbation Theory do not allow a simple quantitative…
The nonperturbative mechanism for spin effects in inclusive production based on the constituent quark model is considered. The main role belongs to the orbital angular momentum and the polarization of the $\bar q q$--pairs in the internal structure of the constituent quarks.
We describe long distance QCD by a dual theory in which the fundamental variables are dual potentials coupled to monopole fields and use this dual theory to determine the effective Lagrangian for constituent quarks. We find the color field distribution surrounding a quark anti-quark pair to first order in their velocities. Using these distributions we eliminate the dual potentials and obtain an effective interaction Lagrangian $L_I ( \vec x_1 \, , \vec x_2 \, ; \vec v_1 \, , \vec v_2 )$ depending only upon the quark and anti-quark coordinates and velocities, valid to second order in their velo…
Small momentum transfer elastic proton-proton cross-section at high energies is calculated assuming the nucleon composed of two constituents - a quark and a diquark. A comparison to data (described very well up to -t = 2 GeV^2/c) allows to determine some properties of the constituents. While quark turns out fairly small, the diquark appears to be rather large, comparable to the size of the proton.
The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment can be estimated by computing constituent quark loops. Such an estimate is very sensitive to the numerical values of the constituent quark masses. These can be fixed by computing the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly within the same model. In this Letter, we demonstrate the stability of this framework against first-order perturbative QCD corrections.
Using a simple picture of the constituent quark as a composite system of point-like partons, we construct the polarized parton distributions by a convolution between constituent quark momentum distributions and constituent quark structure functions. Using unpolarized data to fix the parameters we achieve good agreement with the polarization experiments for the proton, while not so for the neutron. By relaxing our assumptions for the sea distributions, we define new quark functions for the polarized case, which reproduce well the proton data and are in better agreement with the neutron data. Wh…
We show that the constituent quark model leads to simple expressions for the isoscalar and isovector tensor susceptibilities of the vacuum. The found values are negative and of magnitude compatible with QCD-sum-rule parameterizations of spectral densities in appropriate L=1-meson channels.
We discuss the stability of hexaquark systems of type uuddsQ (Q=c or b) within a chiral constituent quark model which successfully describes the baryon spectra including the charmed ones. We find these systems highly unstable against strong decays and give a comparison with some of the previous literature.
New results on baryon structure and spectrum developed in collaboration with Dan Riska [1-4] are reported. The main idea is that beyond the chiral symmetry spontaneous breaking scale light and strange baryons should be considered as systems of three constituent quarks with an effective confining interaction and a chiral interaction that is mediated by the octet of Goldstone bosons (pseudoscalar mesons) between the constituent quarks.
The $ρ$ meson gravitational form factors are studied based on a light-front constituent quark model which has been successfully employed to calculate its generalized parton distributions and some low-energy observables. The distributions of energy, spin, pressures, and shear forces inside the $ρ$ meson are explicitly given.
A nonrelativistic decomposition for the quark energy by the ratio of the dispersion of quark momentum squared and the effective quark mass is investigated in the framework of the relativistic oscillator constituent quark model as bound systems of three valence quarks. It is shown that relativistic corrections are defined by dispersion of the squared absolute value of the quark momentum. The variations of the quark mass and oscillator parameter are studied in detail both in the spectrum and in the nucleon magnetic moments.
We study the nucleon-nucleon interaction within a chiral constituent quark model which reproduces succesfully the baryon spectra. We calculate the 3S1 and 1S0 phase shifts by using the resonating group method. They clearly indicate the presence of a strong repulsive interaction at short distance, due to the spin-flavor symmetry of the quark-quark interaction and of the quark interchange between the two interacting nucleons. A sigma-exchange quark-quark interaction, providing a medium-range attraction, helps to get closer to the experimental phase shifts.
The charge form factor of the pion is calculated for momentum transfer range of Jefferson Lab experiments. The approach is based on the instant form of the relativistic Hamiltonian dynamics. It is shown that the form-factor dependence on the choice of the model for quark wave function in pion is weak, while the dependence on the constituent--quark mass is rather significant. It is possible to estimate the mass of constituent quark and the sum of anomalous magnetic moments of $u$- and $\bar d$- quarks from the JLab experiments.
It is shown that for a constituent quark in the intra-nucleon self-consistent field the spin-orbit interaction lowers the quark rest energy to values $\sim100$ MeV, which agrees with the DIS momentum sum rule. The possibility of violation of the spectral condition for the light-cone momentum component of a bound quark is discussed.
The chiral symmetry is applied to an extended constituent quark potential model. With random phase approximation (RPA), the model comprises sea quark excitations. To obtain the pseudoscalar $π$ meson as a Goldstone boson, the quark effective potentials are modified in the model to account for the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry. Also the vector $ρ$ meson is calculated and the KSRF relation about $π$ and $ρ$ meson decay constants is derived in the model.
Hadronic interactions are discussed within the context of the constituent quark model. The "Quark Born Diagram" methodology is outlined, extensive applications to meson-meson and meson-baryon interactions are discussed, and general features of these interactions are highlighted. The second half of this document deals with shortcomings of the quark model approach and methods to overcome them. These include relativistic kinematics, unitarity, nonlocal potentials, coupled channel effects, and the chiral nature of the pion.
Pion loop fluctuations of the constituent u and d quarks are shown to give only a minute contribution to the intrinsic charge radius of the neutron, under the assumption that the pion-quark coupling constant has its conventional value, with a cut-off scale of the order of 1.0 GeV. The contribution from the pion loops to the anomalous magnetic moment of the neutron represents a small ($\sim$ 12-14%) increase over of the static quark model value.
The Heat Kernel Method is applied to the constituent quark model. We calculate the effect of thermal quark fluctuations on the meson action and the resulting quark condensate and pi pi-scattering amplitude at finite temperature. The quarks produce a chiral phase transition only by their effect on the mesonic coupling constants. The s-wave isospin zero pi pi-scattering amplitude diverges near the phase transition showing the necessity for a more sophisticated treatment of meson fluctuations.
After describing the SU(2) linear sigma model (L$σ$M), we dynamically generate it using the B.W. Lee null tadpole sum (characterizing the true vacuum) together with the dimensional regularization lemma. Next we generate the chiral-limiting (CL) nonstrange and strange constituent quark masses ${\hat m}=325.7$ MeV; $m_s=486$ MeV away from the CL. Finally, we study vector meson dominance (VMD) and the pion, kaon charge radii and the loop-order $ρ\toπγ$, $π^0\toγγ$ amplitudes in the quark model. Lastly, we verify this procedure using tree-order VMD graphs.
The spin properties and the flavor asymmetric sea of the nucleon can be well explained by assuming that each constituent quark is surrounded with about 30% probability by a quark-antiquark pair coupled to the pion quantum numbers. We show that about one quarter of these quark-antiquark pairs show up as the pion in $\p\to\nπ^+$ and $\p\to\pπ^0$ fluctuation in agreement with the observed value in the ($\e+\p\to\e+$ forward neutron+X) experiment.
We study flavor-conserving radiative decays of double heavy baryons using a manifestly Lorentz covariant constituent three-quark model. Decay rates are calculated and compared to each other in the full theory, keeping masses finite, and also in the heavy quark limit. We discuss in some detail hyperfine mixing effects.
On the basis of the mechanism proposed earlier for one-spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production we consider OZI--suppressed process of $φ$-meson production $pp\rightarrow φX$ and asymmetry $A_N(φ)$ in this process. The main role in generation of this asymmetry belongs to the orbital angular momentum of strange quark-antiquark cloud in internal structure of constituent quarks.
We extend the confined covariant constituent quark model that was previously developed by us for mesons to the baryon sector. In our numerical calculation we use the same values for the constituent quark masses and the infrared cutoff as have been previously used in the meson sector. In a first application we describe the static properties of the proton and neutron, and the $Λ$-hyperon (magnetic moments and charge radii) and the behavior of the nucleon form factors at low momentum transfers. We discuss in some detail the conservation of gauge invariance of the electromagnetic transition matrix…
There is a prejudice that the chiral soliton model of baryons is something orthogonal to the good old constituent quark models. In fact, it is the opposite: the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in strong interactions explains the appearance of massive constituent quarks of small size thus justifying the constituent quark models, in the first place. Chiral symmetry ensures that constituent quarks interact very strongly with the pseudoscalar fields. The ``chiral soliton'' is another word for the chiral field binding constituent quarks. We show how the old SU(6) quark wave functions follow fr…
We compute the distribution amplitudes of the pion and kaon in the light-front constituent quark model with the symmetric quark-bound state vertex function. In the calculation we explicitly include the flavor-SU(3) symmetry breaking effect in terms of the constituent quark masses of the up (down) and strange quarks. To calculate the kaon parton distribution functions~(PDFs), we use both the conditions in the light-cone wave function, i.e., when $\bar{s}$ quark is on-shell, and when $u$ quark is on-shell, and make a comparison between them. The kaon PDFs calculated in the two different conditio…
The isoscalar twist-two generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the pion and the kaon are calculated in a Poincare covariant Bethe-Salpeter constituent quark model. Results are presented for several values of the parameters xi and t. The results satisfy the form factor constraints and the polynomiality condition. For the pion GPD, also the isospin symmetry constraint is fulfilled. The influence of kinematical variables and model parameters on the support of the GPDs is investigated. To this end, the strength parameters and quark masses of the constituent quark model are artificially varied.
We study the structure of constituent quarks by dressing bare quarks with the Goldstone bosons and its implications for quark distribution functions of hadrons $f_1(x)$, $g_1(x)$ and $h_1(x)$. In particular we discuss effects of the dressing on the nucleon spin structure, and find that contributions to chiral-odd $h_1(x)$ is quite different from those to $g_1 (x)$, which can be measured in the semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering.
We study the semileptonic decays of double heavy baryons using a manifestly Lorentz covariant constituent three-quark model. We present complete results on transition form factors between double-heavy baryons for finite values of the heavy quark/baryon masses and in the heavy quark symmetry limit which is valid at and close to zero recoil. Decay rates are calculated and compared to each other in the full theory, keeping masses finite, and also in the heavy quark limit.
Instanton effects can give large contribution to strong interacting processes, especially at the energy scale where perturbative QCD is no longer valid. However instanton contribution to the gluon contribution in constituent quark and nucleon has never been calculated before. Based on both the constituent quark picture and the instanton model for QCD vacuum, we calculate the unpolarized and polarized gluon distributions in the constituent quark and in the nucleon for the first time. We find that the pion field plays an important role in producing both the unpolarized and the polarized gluon di…
In the preceding Comment it is alleged that a "hidden loophole" in the proof of Hara's theorem has been found, which purportedly invalidates the conclusions of the paper commented upon. I show that there is no such loophole in the constituent quark model, and that the "counterexample" presented in the Comment is not gauge invariant.
We calculate the differential cross section for semi-inclusive pion production in electron proton reactions using a model where the physical quark fluctuates with some probability to quark plus pion. The kinematic regions for a determination of this `pion cloud' are evaluated.
The transverse and longitudinal transport coefficients for jets in a quark-gluon plasma, $\hat{q}$ and $\hat{e}$, are extracted from simulations of the VNI/BMS parton cascade model. We study their variation under the strong coupling and the parton mass in the medium. We show that their ratio is sensitive to the mass of the plasma constituents. Experimental measurements of both quantities could provide new insights into the nature of the quark-gluon plasma as seen by hard probes.
Using a simple picture of the constituent quark as a composite system of point-like partons, we construct the polarized parton distributions by a convolution between constituent quark momentum distributions and constituent quark structure functions. We achieve good agreement with experiments in the unpolarized as well as in the polarized case, though a good description of the recent polarized neutron data requires the introduction of one more parameter. When our results are compared with similar calculations using non-composite constituent quarks, the accord with the experiments of the present…
We present a study of the baryon spectra for all flavor sectors within a constituent quark model. We address some of the outstanding problems in baryon spectroscopy, as for example the spin splitting evolution for te different flavor sectors, the flavor independence of confinement and the missing state problem.
Meson loop corrections to baryon axial currents are computed in the 1/N expansion. It is already known that the one-loop corrections are suppressed by a factor 1/N; here it is shown that the two-loop corrections are suppressed by (1/N)^2. To leading order, these corrections are exactly what would be calculated in the constituent quark model. Some applications are discussed.
We investigate the structure of constituent quarks and study implications for quark distribution functions of hadrons. Constituent quarks are constructed by dressing bare quarks with Goldstone bosons using the chiral quark model. We calculate resulting corrections to the twist-2 structure functions $f_1(x)$, $g_1(x)$ and $h_1(x)$. The Goldstone boson fluctuations produce a flavor asymmetry of the quark distribution in the nucleon in agreement with experimental data. They also generate significant depolarization effects which reduce the fraction of the nucleon spin carried by quarks. Correction…
The first moment of longitudinal and transverse spin densities of quarks in the nucleon are calculated in a light-front constituent quark model for the different cases of quark and nucleon polarization. Significant distortions are found for the transverse spin densities. In particular the Sivers function is predicted with opposite sign for up and down quarks and the Boer-Mulders function is predicted large and negative for both up and down quarks, in agreement with lattice calculations. Quite a different spin distribution is obtained for up and down quarks in the cases of quarks and proton tra…
