In this letter we show that superconducting Fe1.01Se undergoes a structural transition at 90 K from a tetragonal to an orthorhombic phase but that non-superconducting Fe1.03Se does not. Further, high resolution electron microscopy study at low temperatures reveals an unexpected additional modulation of the crystal structure of the superconducting phase involving displacements of the Fe atoms, and that the non-superconducting material shows a distinct, complex nanometer-scale structural modulation. Finally, we show that magnetism is not the driving force for the phase transition in the superconducting phase.
We report detailed study of angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) with tilting angel $θ$ from $c$-axis ranging from 0$^\circ$ to 360$^\circ$ on a high-quality FeSe single crystal. A pronounced AMR with twofold symmetry is observed, which is caused by the quasi two-dimensional (2D) Fermi surface. The pronounced AMR is observed only in the orthorhombic phase, indicating that the quasi-2D Fermi surface is induced by the structural transition. Details about the influence of the multiband effect to the AMR are also discussed. Besides, the angular response of a possible Dirac-cone-like band stru…
We report detailed study of the transport properties of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ ($x$ = 0 and 0.14) single crystals grown by vapor transport method. 14\% S doping is found significantly suppress the structural transition from $T_s$ $\sim$ 86 K in FeSe to $\sim$ 49 K, although the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, is only slightly affected. A pronounced linear magnetoresistance (MR) is observed in both FeSe and FeSe$_{0.86}$S$_{0.14}$ single crystals, which is found to be triggered by the structural transition. The linear MR and related discussion indicate the possible existence of Dirac-…
We present $β$-FeSe magnetotransport data, and describe them theoretically. Using a simplified microscopic model with two correlated effective orbitals, we determined the normal state electrical conductivity and Hall coefficient, using Kubo formalism. With model parameters relevant for Fe-chalcogenides, we describe the observed effect of the structural transition on the ab-plane electrical resistivity, as well as on the magnetoresistance. Temperature-dependent Hall coefficient data were measured at 16 Tesla, and their theoretical description improves upon inclusion of moderate electron correla…
FeSe, despite being the structurally simplest compound in the family of iron-based superconductors, shows an astoundingly rich interplay of physical phenomena including nematicity and pressure-induced magnetism. Here, we present a microscopic study of these two phenomena by high-energy x-ray diffraction and time-domain Mössbauer spectroscopy on FeSe single crystals over a wide temperature and pressure range. The topology of the pressure-temperature phase diagram is a surprisingly close parallel to the well-known doping-temperature phase diagram of BaFe2As2 generated through partial Fe/Co and B…
In a material prone to a nematic instability, anisotropic strain in principle provides a preferred symmetry-breaking direction for the electronic nematic state to follow. This is consistent with experimental observations, where electronic nematicity and structural anisotropy typically appear hand-in-hand. In this work, we discover that electronic nematicity can be locally decoupled from the underlying structural anisotropy in strain-engineered iron-selenide (FeSe) thin films. We use heteroepitaxial molecular beam epitaxy to grow FeSe with a nanoscale network of modulations that give rise to sp…
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on FeSe superconductor (Tc ~ 8 K), which exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition at Ts ~ 90 K. At low temperature we found splitting of the energy bands as large as 50 meV at the M point in the Brillouin zone, likely caused by the formation of electronically driven nematic states. This band splitting persists up to T ~ 110 K, slightly above Ts, suggesting that the structural transition is triggered by the electronic nematicity. We have also revealed that at low temperature the band splitting gives r…
High-resolution time- and angle-resolved photoemission measurements were made on FeSe superconductors. With ultrafast photoexcitation, two critical excitation fluences that correspond to two ultrafast electronic phase transitions were found only in the $d_{yz}$-orbit-derived band near the Brillouin-zone center within our time and energy resolution. Upon comparison to the detailed temperature dependent measurements, we conclude that there are two equilibrium electronic phase transitions (at approximately 90 and 120 K) above the superconducting transition temperature, and an anomalous contributi…
Temperature (12K $\le$ T $\le$ 300K) dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies at the Fe K edge in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ (x = 0, 0.5 and 1.0) compounds have been carried out to understand the reasons for increase in T$_C$ upon Te doping in FeSe. While local distortions are present near superconducting onset in FeSe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, they seem to be absent in non superconducting FeTe. Of crucial importance is the variation of anion height. In FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, near superconducting onset, the two heights, $h_{Fe-Se}$ and $h_{Fe-Te}$ show a nearly opposite be…
We report scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) studies on one and two unit cell (UC) high FeSe thin films grown on Bi$_2$Se$_3$(0001). In our thin films, we find the tetragonal phase of FeSe and dumb-bell shaped defects oriented along Se-Se bond directions. In addition, we observe striped moiré patterns with a periodicity of ($7.3\pm 0.1$) nm generated by the mismatch between the FeSe lattice and the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ lattice. We could not find any signature of a superconducting gap in the tunneling spectra measured on the surface of one and two UC thick islands of FeSe down to…
The spontaneous appearance of nematicity, a state of matter that breaks rotation but not translation symmetry, is one of the most intriguing property of the iron based superconductors (Fe SC), and has relevance for the cuprates as well. Establishing the critical electronic modes behind nematicity remains however a challenge, because their associated susceptibilities are not easily accessible by conventional probes. Here using FeSe as a model system, and symmetry resolved electronic Raman scattering as a probe, we unravel the presence of critical charge nematic fluctuations near the structural …
Tetragonal beta-FeSe obtained by hydrothermal reaction is not superconducting and transforms to a triclinic structure at 60 K unlike superconducting FeSe from solid state synthesis, which becomes orthorhombic at 90 K. In contrast, tetragonal iron sulphide FeS from hydrothermal synthesis is superconducting at 4.8 K but undergoes no structural transition. Our results suggest that the absence of superconductivity in hydrothermally synthesized FeSe may be associated to the low-temperature structure with zigzag chains of iron atoms, which is different from the known orthorhombic Cmme structure of s…
We report a high-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (laser-ARPES) study of single crystals of FeSe, focusing on the temperature-dependence of the hole-like bands around the ${\rm Γ}$ point. As the system cools through the tetragonal-orthorhombic "nematic" structural transition at 90~K, the splitting of the $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ bands is observed to increase by a magnitude of 13 meV. Moreover, the onset of a $\sim$10 meV downward shift of the $d_{xy}$ band is also at 90~K. These measurements provide clarity on the nature, magnitude and temperature-dependence of the ban…
We report the temperature evolution of the detailed electronic band structure in FeSe single-crystals measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), including the degeneracy removal of the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals at the $Γ$/Z and M points, and the orbital-selective hybridization between the $d_{xy}$ and $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals. The temperature dependences of the splittings at the $Γ$/Z and M points are different, indicating that they are controlled by different order parameters. The splitting at the M point is closely related to the structural transition and is attributed t…
We present a comprehensive study of the evolution of the nematic electronic structure of FeSe using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), quantum oscillations in the normal state and elastoresistance measurements. Our high resolution ARPES allows us to track the Fermi surface deformation from four-fold to two-fold symmetry across the structural transition at ~87 K which is stabilized as a result of the dramatic splitting of bands associated with dxz and dyz character. The low temperature Fermi surface is that a compensated metal consisting of one hole and two elect…
Single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature and pressure has revealed a complex biphase mixture in superconducting FeSe. Based on our experimental results we construct a phase diagram where structural behavior and superconducting properties of FeSe are found to be correlated. We show that below 6 GPa, where pressure promotes the superconducting critical temperature, the FeSe structure is composed of 2D layers of edge-shared FeSe4 tetrahedra, while above 6 GPa the superconductivity is strongly suppressed on formation of a new orthorhombic polymorph characterized by…
Motivated by the properties of the iron chalcogenides, we study the phase diagram of a generalized Heisenberg model with frustrated bilinear-biquadratic interactions on a square lattice. We identify zero-temperature phases with antiferroquadrupolar and Ising-nematic orders. The effects of quantum fluctuations and interlayer couplings are analyzed. We propose the Ising-nematic order as underlying the structural phase transition observed in the normal state of FeSe, and discuss the role of the Goldstone modes of the antiferroquadrupolar order for the dipolar magnetic fluctuations in this system.…
Using a field-effect transistor (FET) configuration with solid Li-ion conductor (SIC) as gate dielectric, we have successfully tuned carrier density in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ thin flakes, and the electronic phase diagram has been mapped out. It is found that electron doping controlled by SIC-FET leads to a suppression of the superconducting phase, and eventually gives rise to an insulating state in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$. During the gating process, the (001) peak in XRD patterns stays at the same position and no new diffraction peak emerges, indicating no evident Li$^+$ ions intercalation into…
Crystalline FeSe is known to display strong nematic order below a weak tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition around $T_s\sim 90$K, and a superconducting transition at $T_c\sim 9K$. Recently, it was shown that electron irradiation, which creates pointlike potential scattering defects, has the surprising effect of enhancing $T_c$ while suppressing $T_s$. Here we discuss a possible scenario for such an effect, which postulates a competition between $s_\pm$ superconductivity and nematic order. The transition to the nematic state is modeled by a mean field theory of a $d$-wave Pomeranchuk i…

A hallmark of the iron-based superconductors is the strong coupling between magnetic, structural and electronic degrees of freedom. However, a universal picture of the normal state properties of these compounds has been confounded by recent investigations of FeSe where the nematic (structural) and magnetic transitions appear to be decoupled. Here, using synchrotron-based high-energy x-ray diffraction and time-domain Moessbauer spectroscopy, we show that nematicity and magnetism in FeSe under applied pressure are indeed strongly coupled. Distinct structural and magnetic transitions are observed…
Due to the simple layered structure, isostructural FeSe and FeSe0.5Te0.5 are clue compounds for understanding the principal mechanisms of superconductivity in the family of Fe-based superconductors. High-pressure magnetic, structural and Mössbauer studies have been performed on single-crystalline samples of superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5 with Tc = 13.5 K. Susceptibility data have revealed a strong increase of Tc up to 19.5 K for pressures up to 1.3 GPa, followed by a plateau in the Tc(p) dependence up to 5.0 GPa. Further pressure increase leads to a disappearance of the superconducting state aro…
We report measurements of resistance and ac magnetic susceptibility on FeSe single crystals under high pressure up to 27.2 kbar. The structural phase transition is quickly suppressed with pressure, and the associated anomaly is not seen above $\sim$18 kbar. The superconducting transition temperature evolves nonmonotonically with pressure, showing a minimum at $\sim12$ kbar. We find another anomaly at 21.2 K at 11.6 kbar. This anomaly most likely corresponds to the antiferromagnetic phase transition found in $μ$SR measurements [M. Bendele \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 087003 (…
We report on the structural phase transitions in the S doped FeSe superconductor by powder synchrotron X ray diffraction at high pressures up to 18.5 GPa under compression and decompression modes. In order to create high quasi hydrostatic pressures, diamond anvil cells filled with helium as a pressure transmitting medium were used. It was found that at ambient pressure and room temperature, S doped FeSe has a tetragonal structure. Under compression, in the region of 10 GPa, a phase transition from the tetragonal into the orthorhombic structure is observed, which persists up to 18.5 GPa. Our re…
The structurally simplest high-temperature superconductor FeSe exhibits an intriguing superconducting nematic paramagnetic phase with unusual spin excitation spectra that are different from typical spin waves; thus, determining its effective magnetic exchange interactions is challenging. Here we report neutron scattering measurements of spin fluctuations of FeSe in the tetragonal paramagnetic phase. We show that the equal-time magnetic structure factor, $\mathcal{S}(\textbf{Q})$, can be effectively modeled using the self-consistent Gaussian approximation calculation with highly frustrated near…
We investigate the electronic reconstruction across the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition in FeSe by employing polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on detwinned single crystals. Across the structural transition, the electronic structures around the G and M points are modified from four-fold to two-fold symmetry due to the lifting of degeneracy in dxz/dyz orbitals. The dxz band shifts upward at the G point while it moves downward at the M point, suggesting that the electronic structure of orthorhombic FeSe is characterized by a momentum-dependent …
We report pair distribution function measurements of the iron-based superconductor FeSe above and below the structural transition temperature. Structural analysis reveals a local orthorhombic distortion with a correlation length of about 4 nm at temperatures where an average tetragonal symmetry is observed. The analysis further demonstrates that the local distortion is larger than the distortion at temperatures where the average observed symmetry is orthorhombic. Our results suggest that the low-temperature macroscopic nematic state in FeSe forms from an imperfect ordering of orbital-degenerac…
To elucidate the magnetic structure and the origin of the nematicity in FeSe, we perform a high-pressure $^{77}$Se NMR study on FeSe single crystals. We find a suppression of the structural transition temperature with pressure up to about 2 GPa from the anisotropy of the Knight shift. Above 2 GPa, a stripe-order antiferromagnetism that breaks the spatial four-fold rotational symmetry is determined by the NMR spectra under different field orientations and with temperatures down to 50 mK. The magnetic phase transition is revealed to be first-order type, implying the existence of a concomitant st…
The study of the iron-based superconductor FeSe has blossomed with the availability of high quality single crystals, obtained through flux/vapor-transport growth techniques below the structural transformation temperature of its tetragonal phase, T~450 C. Here, we report on the variation of sample morphology and properties due to small modifications in the growth conditions. A considerable variation of the superconducting transition temperature Tc, from 8.8 K to 3 K, which cannot be correlated with the sample composition, is observed. Instead, we point out a clear correlation between Tc and dis…
We performed systematic studies on the transport properties of FeSe thin films with controlled degrees of in-plane lattice strain, including both tensile and compressive strains. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\mathrm c}$, increases up to 12 K for films with compressive strain while the superconductivity disappears for films with large tensile strains. On the other hand, the structural (nematic) transition temperature, $T_{\mathrm s}$, slightly decreases as the in-plane strain is more compressive. This suggests that the structural transition can be extinguished by a smaller am…
The pressure dependence of the structural ($T_s$), antiferromagnetic ($T_m$), and superconducting ($T_c$) transition temperatures in FeSe is investigated on the basis of the 16-band $d$-$p$ model. At ambient pressure, a shallow hole pocket disappears due to the correlation effect, as observed in the angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and quantum oscillation (QO) experiments, resulting in the suppression of the antiferromagnetic order, in contrast to the other iron pnictides. The orbital-polarization interaction between the Fe $d$ orbital and Se $p$ orbital is found to drive th…
We comparatively investigated the transport properties for S- and Te-substituted FeSe thin films under magnetic fields to clarify the origin of the contrasting behavior of the superconducting transition temperature in S and Te substitution. A classical two carrier analysis revealed that the carrier densities of the films increased with increasing Te content, while no significant change was observed for the S-substitution. This composition dependence of the carrier density well corresponds to the $T_{\mathrm c}$ behavior. The clear correlation between $T_{\mathrm c}$ and the carrier densities s…
The recently discovered (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OHFeSe superconductor provides a new platform for exploiting the microscopic mechanisms of high-$T_c$ superconductivity in FeSe-derived systems. Using density functional theory calculations, we first show that substitution of Li by Fe not only significantly strengthens the attraction between the (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OH spacing layers and the FeSe superconducting layers along the \emph{c} axis, but also minimizes the lattice mismatch between the two in the \emph{ab} plane, both favorable for stabilizing the overall structure. Next we explore the el…
Electronic properties of FeSe can be tuned by various routes. Here, we present a comprehensive study on the evolution of the superconductivity and nematicity in FeSe with thickness from bulk single crystal down to bilayer ($\sim$ 1.1 nm) through exfoliation. With decreasing flake thickness, both the structural transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ and the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}^{\rm zero}$ are greatly suppressed. The magnetic field ($B$) dependence of Hall resistance $R_{xy}$ at 15 K changes from $B$-nonlinear to $B$-linear behavior up to 9 T, as the thickness ($d$) is …
The local electronic and magnetic properties of superconducting FeSe have been investigated by K$β$ x-ray emission (XES) and simultaneous x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Fe K-edge at high pressure and low temperature. Our results indicate a sluggish decrease of the local Fe spin moment under pressure up to 7~GPa, in line with previous reports, followed by a sudden increase at higher pressure which has been hitherto unobserved. The magnetic surge is preceded by an abrupt change of the Fe local structure as observed by the decrease of the XAS pre-edge region intensity and corroborated…
The large anisotropy in the electronic properties across a structural transition in several correlated systems has been identified as the key manifestation of electronic nematic order, breaking rotational symmetry. In this context, FeSe is attracting tremendous interest, since electronic nematicity develops over a wide range of temperatures, allowing accurate experimental investigation. Here we combine angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical calculations based on a realistic multi-orbital model to unveil the microscopic mechanism responsible for the evolution of the electroni…
We have investigated the correlation between structural and transport properties in sputtered $β$-FeSe films grown onto SrTiO$_3$ (100). The growth parameters, such as substrate temperature and thickness, have been varied in order to explore different regimes. In the limit of textured thick films, we found promising features like an enhanced $T_{\rm c}\sim12\,$K, a relatively high $H_{\rm c2}$ and a low anisotropy. By performing magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient measurements, we investigate the influence of the disorder associated with the textured morphology on some features attributed t…
Elucidating the microscopic origin of nematic order in iron-based superconducting materials is important because the interactions that drive nematic order may also mediate the Cooper pairing. Nematic order breaks fourfold rotational symmetry in the iron plane, which is believed to be driven by either orbital or spin degrees of freedom. However, as the nematic phase often develops at a temperature just above or coincides with a stripe magnetic phase transition, experimentally determining the dominant driving force of nematic order is difficult. Here, we use neutron scattering to study structura…
The in-plane resistivity anisotropy is studied in strain-detwinned single crystals of FeSe. In contrast to other iron-based superconductors, FeSe does not develop long-range magnetic order below the nematic/structural transition at $T_{s}\approx$90~K. This allows for the disentanglement of the contributions to the resistivity anisotropy due to nematic and magnetic orders. Comparing direct transport and elastoresistivity measurements, we extract the intrinsic resistivity anisotropy of strain-free samples. The anisotropy peaks slightly below $T_{s}$ and decreases to nearly zero on cooling down t…
In high-superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$) iron-based superconductors, interband sign reversal ($s_{\rm \pm}$) and sign preserving ($s_{\rm ++}$) $s$-wave superconducting states have been primarily discussed as the plausible superconducting mechanism. We study Co impurity scattering effects on the superconductivity in order to achieve an important clue on the pairing mechanism using single crystal Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Se and depict a phase diagram of a FeSe system. Both superconductivity and structural transition / orbital order are suppressed by the Co replacement on the Fe sites…
Our study of FeSe$ _ {1-x}$Te$ _ {x}$ crystals with x $<$ 0.15 shows that the phase separation in these compositions occurs into phases with a different stoichiometry of iron. This phase separation may indicate structural instability of the iron plane in the studied range of compositions. To explain it, we discuss the bond polarity and the peculiarity of the direct $d$ exchange in the iron plane in the framework of the basic phenomenological description such as the Bethe-Slater curve. With this approach, when the distance between iron atoms is close to the value at which the sign of the magnet…
