We report measurements of resistance and ac magnetic susceptibility on FeSe single crystals under high pressure up to 27.2 kbar. The structural phase transition is quickly suppressed with pressure, and the associated anomaly is not seen above $\sim$18 kbar. The superconducting transition temperature evolves nonmonotonically with pressure, showing a minimum at $\sim12$ kbar. We find another anomaly at 21.2 K at 11.6 kbar. This anomaly most likely corresponds to the antiferromagnetic phase transition found in $μ$SR measurements [M. Bendele \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 087003 (2010)]. The antiferromagnetic and superconducting transition temperatures both increase with pressure up to $\sim25$ kbar and then level off. The width of the superconducting transition anomalously broadens in the pressure range where the antiferromagnetism coexists.
Single monolayer FeSe film grown on Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$(001) substrate shows the highest superconducting transition temperature (T$_C$ $\sim$ 100 K) among the iron-based superconductors (iron-pnictide), while T$_C$ of bulk FeSe is only $\sim$ 8 K. Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations were believed to be crucial in iron-pnictides, which has inspired several proposals to understand the FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system. Although bulk FeSe does not show the antiferromagnetic order, calculations suggest that the parent FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ films are AFM. Experimentally, due to lacking of direct probe, the magnetic st…
The resistivity $ρ$ and Hall resistivity $ρ_H$ are measured on FeSe at pressures up to $P$ = 28.3 kbar in magnetic fields up to $B$ = 14.5 T. The $ρ(B)$ and $ρ_H(B)$ curves are analyzed with multicarrier models to estimate the carrier density and mobility as a function of $P$ and temperature ($ T\leqslant$ 110 K). It is shown that the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic transition is accompanied by an abrupt reduction of the carrier density and scattering. This indicates that the electronic structure is reconstructed significantly by the antiferromagnetic order.
We investigated the pressure effects on the FeSe superconductor and the related compounds. Pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) for FeSe0.8S0.2 exhibits a dome-shaped behavior below 0.76 GPa. On the other hand, the Tc of FeSe0.25Te0.75 linearly increases up to 0.99 GPa. Here we discuss the relation between the physical pressure effects and the chemical pressure effects on the FeSe system.
The exotic normal state of iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe, which exhibits vanishing magnetic order and possesses an electronic nematic order, triggered extensive explorations of its magnetic ground state. To understand its novel properties, we study the ground state of a highly frustrated spin-$1$ system with bilinear-biquadratic interactions using unbiased large-scale density matrix renormalization group. Remarkably, with increasing biquadratic interactions, we find a paramagnetic phase between Néel and stripe magnetic ordered phases. We identify this phase as a candidate of nematic qu…
We present a systematic study of the high-pressure FeSe phase performed by means of the first-principle electronic structure calculations. Basing on available experimental information about the unit cell geometry we calculate the band structure and characterize the related properties during their pressure driven evolution. The electronic structure including the hybrid functional B3LYP or the Hubbard parameter U for the iron d states lead to the correct semiconducting ground state for the hexagonal stoichiometric FeSe within the broad pressure range (up to 30 GPa).
Unlike the parent phases of the iron-arsenide high Tc superconductors, undoped FeSe is not magnetically ordered and exhibits superconductivity with Tc~9K. Equally surprising is the fact that applied pressure dramatically enhances the modest Tc to ~37K. We investigate the electronic properties of FeSe using 77Se NMR to search for the key to the superconducting mechanism. We demonstrate that the electronic properties of FeSe are very similar to those of electron-doped FeAs superconductors, and that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are strongly enhanced near Tc. Furthermore, applied pressure e…
The pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ has been investigated through the DC magnetic measurements for FeSe$_{0.8}$ and FeSe$_{1.0}$. For both samples, with increasing pressure $P$, the $T_{\rm c}$$-$$P$ curve exhibits a two-step increase, showing a local maximum of $\sim$11 K at $P$$\sim$1.0 GPa and a rapid increase with an extremely large pressure coefficient for $P$$>$1.5 GPa. $T_{\rm c}$ saturates at $\sim$25 K (21 K) in FeSe$_{1.0}$ (FeSe$_{0.8}$) for $P$$>$3 GPa. A rapid decrease in superconducting volume fraction is observed with an increase in $T_{…
Whether the pairing mechanism for superconductivity in iron-based superconductors is of itinerant or local character is a question still debated on. In order to investigate the influence of Fermi surface nesting, we calculate from first-principles the static susceptibility of FeSe under applied pressures, both hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic. We show that the electronic band structures are highly sensitive to the way pressure is applied and confront our theoretical results with conclusions drawn from experiments. Given that the critical temperature of FeSe is quite universal as function of pre…
The pressure effect on the resistivity and superconducting Tc of prestrained thin films of the iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe0.5Te0.5 is studied. Films with different anion heights above the Fe layer showing different values of ambient pressure Tc's are compressed up to a pressure of 1.7 GPa. All films exhibit a significant increase of Tc with pressure. The results cannot solely be explained by a pressure-induced decrease of the anion height but other parameters have to be considered to explain the data for all films.
The sulfur substituted FeSe system, FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$, provides a versatile platform for studying the relationship between nematicity, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity. Here, by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resistivity measurements up to 4.73 GPa on FeSe$_{0.91}$S$_{0.09}$, we established the pressure($p$)-temperature($T$) phase diagram in which the nematic state is suppressed with pressure showing a nematic quantum phase transition (QPT) around $p$ = 0.5 GPa, two SC regions, separated by the QPT, appear and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase emerges above $\sim$3.3 GPa. From the…
Magnetism induced by external pressure ($p$) was studied in a FeSe crystal sample by means of muon-spin rotation. The magnetic transition changes from second-order to first-order for pressures exceeding the critical value $p_{\rm c}\simeq2.4-2.5$ GPa. The magnetic ordering temperature ($T_{\rm N}$) and the value of the magnetic moment per Fe site ($m_{\rm Fe}$) increase continuously with increasing pressure, reaching $T_{\rm N}\simeq50$~K and $m_{\rm Fe}\simeq0.25$ $μ_{\rm B}$ at $p\simeq2.6$ GPa, respectively. No pronounced features at both $T_{\rm N}(p)$ and $m_{\rm Fe}(p)$ are detected at $…
We present $^{77}$Se-NMR measurements on single-crystalline FeSe under pressures up to 2 GPa. Based on the observation of the splitting and broadening of the NMR spectrum due to structural twin domains, we discovered that static, local nematic ordering exists well above the bulk nematic ordering temperature, $T_{\rm s}$. The static, local nematic order and the low-energy stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, as revealed by NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements, are both insensitive to pressure application. These NMR results provide clear evidence for the microscopic cooperat…
We report high-pressure $^{77}$Se NMR studies on FeSe single crystals that reveal a prominent inhomogeneous NMR linewidth broadening upon cooling, with the magnetic field applied along the tetragonal [110] direction. The data indicate the existence of short-range-ordered, inhomogeneous electronic nematicity, which has surprisingly long time scales over milliseconds. The short-range order survives temperatures up to $8$ times the structural transition temperature, and remains robust against pressure, in contrast to the strong pressure-dependence of the orbital ordering, structural transition, a…
We synthesized tetragonal alpha-FeSe by melting a powder mixture of iron and selenium at high pressure. Subsequent annealing at normal pressure results in removing traces of hexagonal beta- FeSe, formation of a rather sharp transition to superconducting state at Tc ~ 7 K, and the appearance of a magnetic transition near Tm = 120 K. Resistivity and ac-susceptibility were measured on the annealed sample at hydrostatic pressure up to 4.5 GPa. A magnetic transition visible in ac-susceptibility shifts down under pressure and the resistive anomaly typical for a spin density wave (SDW) antiferromagne…
We report the evolution of the electronic nematic susceptibility in FeSe via Raman scattering as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to 5.8 GPa where the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ reaches its maximum. The critical nematic fluctuations observed at low pressure vanish above 1.6 GPa, indicating they play a marginal role in the four-fold enhancement of $T_{c}$ at higher pressures. The collapse of nematic fluctuations appears to be linked to a suppression of low energy electronic excitations which manifests itself by optical phonon anomalies at around 2 GPa, in agreement with…
We offer an explanation for the recently observed pressure-induced magnetic state in the iron-chalcogenide FeSe based on \textit{ab initio} estimates for the pressure evolution of the most important Coulomb interaction parameters. We find that an increase of pressure leads to an overall decrease mostly in the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion, which in turn leads to a reduction of the nematic order and the generation of magnetic stripe order. We treat the concomitant effects of band renormalization and the induced interplay of nematic and magnetic order in a self-consistent way and determine …
We carried out 57Fe Mossbauer measurements for FeSe and Fe1.08Te to investigate the magnetic properties. There was no sign of magnetic ordering above 4.2 K for superconducting FeSe. The magnetic sextet corresponding to antiferromagnetic ordering of Fe in low-spin state was observed for non-superconducting Fe1.08Te.
Since its discovery, iron-based superconductivity has been known to develop near an antiferromagnetic order, but this paradigm fails in the iron chalcogenide FeSe, whose single-layer version holds the record for the highest superconducting transition temperature in the iron-based superconductors. The striking puzzle that FeSe displays nematic order (spontaneously broken lattice rotational symmetry) while being non-magnetic, has led to several competing proposals for its origin in terms of either the $3d$-electron's orbital degrees of freedom or spin physics in the form of frustrated magnetism.…
The emergence of high transition temperature ($T_c$) superconductivity in bulk FeSe under pressure is associated with the tuning of nematicity and magnetism. However, sorting out the relative contributions from magnetic and nematic fluctuations to the enhancement of $T_c$ remains challenging. Here, we design and conduct a series of high-pressure experiments on FeSe thin flakes. We find that, as the thickness decreases, the nematic phase boundary on temperature-pressure phase diagrams remains robust while the magnetic order is significantly weakened. A local maximum of $T_c$ is observed outside…
The pressure dependence of the structural ($T_s$), antiferromagnetic ($T_m$), and superconducting ($T_c$) transition temperatures in FeSe is investigated on the basis of the 16-band $d$-$p$ model. At ambient pressure, a shallow hole pocket disappears due to the correlation effect, as observed in the angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and quantum oscillation (QO) experiments, resulting in the suppression of the antiferromagnetic order, in contrast to the other iron pnictides. The orbital-polarization interaction between the Fe $d$ orbital and Se $p$ orbital is found to drive th…
The magnetic order induced by the pressure was studied in single crystalline FeSe by means of muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) technique. By following the evolution of the oscillatory part of the $μ$SR signal as a function of angle between the initial muon-spin polarization and 101 axis of studied crystal it was found that the pressure induced magnetic order in FeSe corresponds either to the collinear (single-stripe) antiferromagnetic order as observed in parent compounds of various FeAs-based superconductors or to the Bi-Collinear order as obtained in FeTe system, but with the Fe spins turned by 45…
Iron-based chalcogenides are complex superconducting systems in which orbitally-dependent electronic correlations play an important role. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the effect of these electronic correlations outside the nematic phase in the tetragonal phase of superconducting FeSe1-xSx (x = 0; 0:18; 1). With increasing sulfur substitution, the Fermi velocities increase significantly and the band renormalizations are suppressed towards a factor of 1.5-2 for FeS. Furthermore, the chemical pressure leads to an increase in the size of the…
FeSe, despite being the structurally simplest compound in the family of iron-based superconductors, shows an astoundingly rich interplay of physical phenomena including nematicity and pressure-induced magnetism. Here, we present a microscopic study of these two phenomena by high-energy x-ray diffraction and time-domain Mössbauer spectroscopy on FeSe single crystals over a wide temperature and pressure range. The topology of the pressure-temperature phase diagram is a surprisingly close parallel to the well-known doping-temperature phase diagram of BaFe2As2 generated through partial Fe/Co and B…
Superconductivity in FeSe was investigated under high pressure through the measurements of DC magnetization by using a diamond anvil cell. We successfully observed that the disappearance of the superconductivity as a results of the appearance of the non-superconducting ortho I\hspace{-1pt}I phase above $\sim$7 GPa ($\sim$5 GPa), when Ar (glycerin) is used as the pressure transmitting media. Contrary to this, it has been found that the superconductivity even survives under pressure above 7 GPa, when the thickness ($t$) of a platelet-single crystal specimen is reduced. The survival of the superc…
Electronic nematicity in correlated metals often occurs alongside another instability such as magnetism. As a result, the question remains whether nematicity alone can drive unconventional superconductivity or anomalous (quantum critical) transport in such systems. In FeSe, nematicity emerges in isolation, providing a unique opportunity to address this question. Studies to date, however, have proved inconclusive; while signatures of nematic criticality are observed upon sulfur substitution, they appear to be quenched under the application of pressure due to the emergent magnetism. Here, we stu…
We revisit bulk FeSe through the systematic first-principles electronic structure calculations. We find that there are a series of staggered $n$-mer antiferromagnetic (AFM) states with corresponding energies below that of the collinear AFM state which is the ground state for the parent compounds of most iron-based superconductors. Here the staggered $n$-mer ($n$ any integer $>1$) means that a set of $n$ adjacent spins parallel on a line along $b$-axis with spins in antiparallel between $n$-mers and along $a$-axis. Among them, the lowest energy states are quasi-degenerate staggered dimer and st…
We report on the synthesis of superconducting single crystals of FeSe, and their characterization by X-ray diffraction, magnetization and resistivity. We have performed ac susceptibility measurements under high pressure in a hydrostatic liquid argon medium up to 14 GPa and we find that TC increases up to 33-36 K in all samples, but with slightly different pressure dependences on different samples. Above 12 GPa no traces of superconductivity are found in any sample. We have also performed a room temperature high pressure X-ray diffraction study up to 12 GPa on a powder sample, and we find that …
The superconducting transition of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ with three distinct sulphur concentrations $x$ was studied under hydrostatic pressure up to $\sim$70 kbar via bulk AC susceptibility. The pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) features a small dome-shaped variation at low pressures for $x=0.04$ and $x=0.12$, followed by a more substantial $T_c$ enhancement to a value of around 30 K at moderate pressures. In $x=0.21$, a similar overall pressure dependence of $T_c$ is observed, except that the small dome at low pressures is flattened. For all three concentrat…
Monolayer FeSe thin film grown on SrTiO_{3}(001) (STO) shows the sign of T_{c}> 77 K, which is higher than the T_{c}-record of 56 K for the bulk FeAs-based superconductors. However, little is known about the magnetic ground state of FeSe, which should be closely related to its unusual superconductivity. Previous studies presume the collinear stripe antiferromagnetic (AFM) state as the ground state of FeSe, same to that in FeAs superconductors. Here we find a novel magnetic order named "pair-checkboard AFM" as the magnetic ground state of tetragonal FeSe. The novel pair-checkboard order results…
We report Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation measurements on FeSe under high pressure up to $P$ = 16.1 kbar. We find a sudden change in SdH oscillations at the onset of the pressure-induced antiferromagnetism at $P$ $\sim$ 8 kbar. We argue that this change can be attributed to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by the antiferromagnetic order. The negative d$T_c$/d$P$ observed in a range between $P$ $\sim$ 8 and 12 kbar may be explained by the reduction in the density of states due to the reconstruction. The ratio of the transition temperature to the effective Fermi energy remains high unde…
We performed $^{77}$Se-NMR measurements on FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$, ($x$ = 0.12) up to 3.0 GPa at an applied magnetic field of 6.02 T, and found that the superconducting (SC) phase exhibits a remarkable double-dome structure in the pressure($P$)-temperature($T$) phase diagram which is hidden at 0 T. From the relaxation rate $1/T_1$ divided by $T$, $1/T_1T$, a Lifshitz transition may occur at 1.0 GPa, and the dominant nesting vector could change due to topological changes in Fermi surfaces. In other words, two types of antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations would exist in the $P-T$ phase diagram. We co…
To understand the rich electronic phase diagram in FeSe under pressure that vividly demonstrates the strong interplay between the nematicity, magnetism and superconductivity, we analyze the electronic states by including the higher-order many-body effects called the vertex correction (VC). We predict the pressure-induced emergence of xy-orbital hole-pocket based on the first-principles analysis. Due to this pressure-induced Lifshitz transition, the spin fluctuations on the xy orbital are enhanced, whereas those on xz,yz orbitals are gradually reduced. For this reason, nonmagnetic orbital order…
Temperature dependence of resistivity under high pressures with magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the FeSe planes are measured in FeSe single crystals. It is found that the structural transition (nematic) temperature is suppressed by pressure and ends at around $P$ = 1.18 GPa. Below around 0.85 GPa, the superconducting transition shows a narrow width with no indication of antiferromagnetic order. While above this pressure, the superconducting transition temperature drops slightly forming a small dome of superconducting region with the maximum $T_c$ at around 0.825 GPa. Furthermore,…
The discoveries of iron-based superconductors with relatively high transition temperature are under intense experimental and theoretical investigation. Here we present magnetotransport measurements on FeSe superconductor under hydrostatic pressure. We show that in Fe-deficient tetragonal FeSe binary compound, the onset of superconducting transition is almost doubled under 1.98GPa pressure and the estimated upper critical field of 26.7Tesla is increased to 47.5Tesla.
The electronic structures, lattice dynamics, and magnetic properties of crystal β-FeSe under hydrostatic pressure have been studied by using the first-principles electronic structure calculations with van der Waals (vdW) corrections. With applied pressures, the energy bands around the Fermi energy level consisting mainly of Fe-3d orbitals show obvious energy shifts and occupation variations, and meanwhile the frequencies of all optical phonon modes increase. Among these phonon modes, the A1g mode, which relates to the Se height from the Fe-Fe plane, shows a clear frequency jump in the range be…
By means of the first-principles calculations and magnetic topological quantum chemistry, we demonstrate that the low energy physics in the checkerboard antiferromagnetic (AFM) monolayer FeSe, very close to an AFM topological insulator that hosts robust edge states, can be well captured by a double-degenerate fragile topologically flat band just below the Fermi level. The Wilson loop calculations identify that such fragile topology is protected by the $S_{4z}$ symmetry, which gives rise to an AFM higher-order topological insulator that support the bound state with fractional charge $e/2$ at th…
A polycrystalline sample of FeSe, which adopts the tetragonal PbO-type structure (P4/nmm) at room temperature, has been prepared using solid state reaction. We have investigated pressure-induced structural changes in tetragonal FeSe at varying hydrostatic pressures up to 0.6 GPa in the orthorhombic (T = 50 K) and tetragonal (T = 190 K) phases using high resolution neutron powder diffraction. We report that the structure is quite compressible with a Bulk modulus around 31 GPa to 33 GPa and that the pressure response is anisotropic with a larger compressibility along the c-axis. Key bond angles …
External pressure driven phase transitions of FeSe are predicted using \textit{ab initio} calculations. The calculations reveal that $α$-FeSe takes transitions to NiAs-type, MnP-type, and CsCl-type FeSe. Transitions from NiAs-type to MnP-type and CsCl-type FeSe is also predicted. MnP-type FeSe is also found to be able to transform to CsCl-type FeSe, which is easier from $α$-FeSe than the transition to MnP-type FeSe, but comparable to the transition from NiAs-type FeSe. The calculated electronic structures show that all phases of FeSe are metallic, but the ionic interaction between Fe-Se bonds …
Superconductivity in FeSe is strongly enhanced under applied pressure and it is proposed to emerge from anomalously coupled structural and magnetic phases. Small impurities inside the Fe plane can strongly disrupt the pair formation in FeSe at ambient pressure and can also reveal the interplay between normal and superconducting phases. Here, we investigate how an impurity inside the Fe plane induced by the Cu substitution can alter the balance between competing electronic phases of FeSe at high pressures. In the absence of an applied magnetic field, at low pressures the nematic and superconduc…
The influence of uniform pressures $P$ up to 5 kbar on the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ was studied for the FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ ($x=0$, 0.85, 0.88 and 0.9) system. For the first time, we observed a change in sign of the pressure effect on $T_c$ when going from FeSe to tellurium rich alloys. This has allowed to specify the pressure derivative d$T_c$/d$P$ for the system as a function of composition. The observed dependence was compared with results of the {\em ab initio} calculations of electronic structure and magnetism of FeSe, FeTe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, and also with our …
A nematic transition preceding a long-range spin density wave antiferromagnetic phase is a common feature of many Fe based superconductors. However, in the FeSe system with a nematic transition at $T_{\rm s} \approx$ 90 K no evidence for long-range static magnetism down to very low temperature was found. The lack of magnetism is a challenge for the theoretical description of FeSe. Here, we investigated high-quality single crystals of FeSe using high-field (up to 9.5 Tesla) muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. The $μ$SR Knight shift and the bulk susceptibility linearly scale at high tempera…
Specific heat has been measured in FeSe single crystals down to 0.414 K under magnetic fields up to 16 T. A sharp specific heat anomaly at about 8.2 K is observed and is related to the superconducting transition. Another jump of specific heat is observed at about 1.08 K which may either reflect an antiferromagnetic transition of the system or a superconducting transition arising from Al impurity. We would argue that this anomaly in low temperature region may be the long sought antiferromagnetic transition in FeSe. Global fitting in wide temperature region shows that the models with a single co…
We report a high-resolution angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy study of the evolution of the electronic structure of FeSe1-xSx single crystals. Isovalent S substitution onto the Se site constitutes a chemical pressure which subtly modifies the electronic structure of FeSe at high temperatures and induces a suppression of the tetragonal-symmetry-breaking structural transition temperature from 87K to 58K for x=0.15. With increasing S substitution, we find smaller splitting between bands with dyz and dxz orbital character and weaker anisotropic distortions of the low temperature Fermi sur…
This work reports studies performed in the superconducting compound FeSe0:5Te0:5 under high pressure. Changes were observed in the transition temperature, superconducting critical fields, anomalous variations in the Meissner fraction, and in Ginzburg Landau parameters. The superconducting properties were calculated and compared using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenber approximation and Ginzburg-Landau theory. Hydrostatic pressure was produced from atmospheric to 823 MPa, the increment in the critical temperature was from 14.45 to 20.5 K at a rate of change about 0.0069 K/MPa.
We report on a detailed investigation of the electronic phase diagram of FeSe_1-x under pressures up to 1.4GPa by means of AC magnetization and muon-spin rotation. At a pressure \simeq0.8GPa the non-magnetic and superconducting FeSe_1-x enters a region where long range static magnetic order is realized above T_c and bulk superconductivity coexists and competes on short length scales with the magnetic order below T_c. For even higher pressures an enhancement of both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures as well as of the corresponding order parameters is observed. These e…
Single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature and pressure has revealed a complex biphase mixture in superconducting FeSe. Based on our experimental results we construct a phase diagram where structural behavior and superconducting properties of FeSe are found to be correlated. We show that below 6 GPa, where pressure promotes the superconducting critical temperature, the FeSe structure is composed of 2D layers of edge-shared FeSe4 tetrahedra, while above 6 GPa the superconductivity is strongly suppressed on formation of a new orthorhombic polymorph characterized by…
We investigated chemical pressure effects in electron-doped (e-doped) FeSe by fabricating an electric-double-layer structure with single crystalline FeSe films on LaAlO$_3$ with Se substituted by isovalent Te and S. Our method enables transport measurements of e-doped FeSe. Electron doping by applying gate voltage of 5 V increases $T_{\mathrm c}$ of the FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ and FeSe$_{1-y}$S$_y$ films with $0 \leq x \leq 0.4$ and $0 \leq y \leq 0.25$, while the e-doped $x=0.5$ film showed lower $T_{\mathrm c}$ than that of the undoped one. Both positive and chemical pressure suppress $T_{\mathrm…
We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and magnetization measurements under pressure on Fe$_{1+δ}$Se$_\mathrm{1\text{-}x}$S$_\mathrm{x}$ with x $\approx 0.11$.Above $p\approx0.6$ GPa we find microscopic coexistence of superconductivity with an extended dome of long range magnetic order that spans a pressure range between previously reported separated magnetic phases. The magnetism initially competes on an atomic scale with the coexisting superconductivity leading to a local maximum and minimum of the superconducting $T_\mathrm{c}(p)$. The maximum of $T_\mathrm{c}$ corresponds to the onset of mag…
We have studied the structural and superconducting properties of tetragonal FeSe under pressures up to 26GPa using synchrotron radiation and diamond anvil cells. The bulk modulus of the tetragonal phase is 28.5(3)GPa, much smaller than the rest of Fe based superconductors. At 12GPa we observe a phase transition from the tetragonal to an orthorhombic symmetry. The high pressure orthorhombic phase has a higher Tc reaching 34K at 22GPa.
The NMR spectrum of FeSe shows a dramatic broadening on cooling towards the bulk nematic phase at $T_s=90$ K, due to the formation of a quasi-static, short-range-ordered nematic domain structure. However, a quantitative understanding of the NMR broadening and its relationship to the nematic susceptibility is still lacking. Here, we show that the temperature and pressure dependence of the broadening is in quantitative agreement with the mean-field Edwards-Anderson parameter of an Ising-nematic model in the presence of random-field disorder introduced by non-magnetic impurities. Furthermore, the…
We have computed the correlated electronic structure of FeSe and its dependence on the A1g mode versus compression. Using the self-consistent density functional theory - dynamical mean field theory (DFT-DMFT) with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC), we find that there is greatly enhanced coupling between some correlated electron states and the A1g lattice distortion. Superconductivity in FeSe shows a very strong sensitivity to pressure, with an increase in Tc of almost a factor of 5 within a few GPa, followed by a drop, despite monotonic pressure dependence of almost all electronic pr…
The iron-based superconductor FeSe offers a unique possibility to study the interplay of superconductivity with purely nematic as well magnetic-nematic order by pressure (p) tuning. By measuring specific heat under p up to 2.36GPa, we study the multiple phases in FeSe using a thermodynamic probe. We conclude that superconductivity is bulk across the entire p range and competes with magnetism. Our analysis suggests that superconducting and magnetic fluctuations exist over a wide temperature range above the respective bulk transition temperatures, whenever magnetism is present. These observation…
A fundamental issue concerning iron-based superconductivity is the roles of electronic nematicity and magnetism in realising high transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$). To address this issue, FeSe is a key material, as it exhibits a unique pressure phase diagram involving nonmagnetic nematic and pressure-induced antiferromagnetic ordered phases. However, as these two phases in FeSe overlap with each other, the effects of two orders on superconductivity remain perplexing. Here we construct the three-dimensional electronic phase diagram, temperature ($T$) against pressure ($P$) and isovalent S-su…
Interrelationships between nematicity, antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and superconductivity: Role of hotspots in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ revealed by high pressure $^{77}$Se NMR study
We report on the structural phase transitions in the S doped FeSe superconductor by powder synchrotron X ray diffraction at high pressures up to 18.5 GPa under compression and decompression modes. In order to create high quasi hydrostatic pressures, diamond anvil cells filled with helium as a pressure transmitting medium were used. It was found that at ambient pressure and room temperature, S doped FeSe has a tetragonal structure. Under compression, in the region of 10 GPa, a phase transition from the tetragonal into the orthorhombic structure is observed, which persists up to 18.5 GPa. Our re…
The 12%-S doped FeSe system has a high Tc of 30 K at a pressure of 3.0 GPa. We have successfully investigated its microscopic properties for the first time via $^{77}$Se-NMR measurements under pressure. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations at the optimal pressure (~3 GPa) exhibited unexpected suppression compared with the AFM fluctuations at ambient pressure, even though the optimal pressure is close to the phase boundary of the AFM phase induced at the high-pressure region. In addition, we revealed that the SC phase at an applied field of 6.02 T exhibited a remarkable double-dome structur…
