We study the extraction of the ground-state parameters from vacuum-to-vacuum correlators. We work in quantum-mechanical potential model which provides the only possibility to probe the reliability and the actual accuracy of this method: one obtains the bound-state parameters from the correlators by the standard procedures adopted in the method of sum rules and compares these results with the exact values calculated from the Schroedinger equation. We focus on the crucial ingredient of the method of sum rules - the effective continuum threshold - and propose a new algorithm to fix this quantity. In a quantum-mechanical model, our procedure leads to a remarkable improvement of the accuracy of the extracted ground-state parameters compared to the standard procedures adopted in the method and used in all previous applications of dispersive sum rules in QCD. The application of the proposed procedure in QCD promises a considerable increase of the accuracy of the extracted hadron parameters.
Physical contribution of the high-energy part of hadronic spectrum is incorporated to describe the short-distance part of the correlator of heavy-quark currents obtained by quenched Monte-Carlo on a $8^3*16$- and $16^3*32$-lattices for $β= \{ 6, 6.3 \}$. The lattice artifacts in the short-distance behavior of that correlator are isolated. The physical short-distance part of the correlator is fitted by the relevant expressions of perturbative QCD, which allows one to obtain the renormalized charmed quark mass with rather high accuracy $m_c^{\bar{MS}}(m_c)\,=\,1.22(5)\,GeV$.
In this review paper the QCD vacuum properties and the structure of color fields in hadrons are studied using the complete set of gauge-invariant correlators of gluon fields. Confinement in QCD is produced by the correlators of some certain Lorentz structure, which violate abelian Bianchi identities and therefore are absent in the case of QED. These correlators are used to define an effective colorless field, which satisfies Maxwell equation with nonzero effective magnetic current. With the help of the effective field and correlators it is shown that quarks are confined due to effective magnet…
We analyse the extraction of the bound-state form factor from vacuum-to-hadron correlator, which is the basic object for the calculation of hadron form factors in the method of light-cone sum rules in QCD. We study this correlator in quantum mechanics, calculate it exactly, and derive the corresponding OPE. We then apply the standard procedures of QCD sum rules to isolate the ground-state form factor from this correlator. We demonstrate that fixing the effective continuum threshold, one of the key ingredients of the sum-rule calculation of bound-state parameters, poses a serious problem for su…
Stochastic quantization is used to derive exact equations, connecting multilocal field correlators in the phi^3 theory and gluodynamics. Perturbative expansion of the obtained equations in the lowest orders is presented.
The correlator of singlet axial-vector and vector currents in the external electromagnetic field is studied within the instanton liquid model of QCD vacuum. In the chiral limit we calculate the longitudinal w_L^0 and transversal w_T^0 with respect to axial-vector index invariant amplitudes at arbitrary momentum transfer q. It is demonstrated how the anomalous longitudinal part of the correlator is renormalized at low momenta due to the presence of the U_A(1) anomaly.
The pion electric polarizability, α^E_π^\pm, the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ^{hvp 1} $, and the ratio of the difference to the sum of vector and axial-vector correlators, (V-A)/(V+A), are found within the instanton model of QCD vacuum. The results are compared with phenomenological estimates of these quantities following from the ALEPH and OPAL data on vector and axial-vector spectral densities.
Phenomenological results of equal time, point to point spatial correlation functions of hadronic currents are used to deduce the structure of the QCD vacuum. It is found that a model with only quark condensate is not adequate to explain the observations. Inclusion of condensate fluctuations (explicit four point structure in the vacuum) leads to excellent overall agreement with the phenomenological curves and parameters in various channels.
We report about recent progress in computing four-loop massive correlators. The expansion of these correlators in the external momentum leads to vacuum integrals. The calculation of these vacuum integrals can be used to determine Taylor expansion coefficients of the vacuum polarization function and decoupling functions in perturbative Quantum chromodynamics. New results at four-loop order for the lowest Taylor expansion coefficient of the vacuum polarization function and for the decoupling relation are presented.
We formulate a new algorithm for obtaining the effective continuum threshold in vacuum-to-bound-state correlators - the basic objects for the calculation of hadron form factors in the method of light-cone sum rules in QCD. The effective continuum threshold is one of the key ingredients of the method which to a large extent determines the value of the form factor extracted from the relevant correlator. In a quantum-mechanical potential model, where the exact form factor is known, the application of our algorithm is shown to lead to a dramatic increase of the accuracy of the extracted form facto…
The bilocal electric field strength correlators in Abelian-projected SU(2)- and SU(3)-theories are derived with accounting for the contributions to these quantities brought about by the virtual vortex loops, built out of the dual Nielsen-Olesen strings. Owing to the screening of magnetic charge of the dual vector bosons in the gas of such loops, these bosons become heavier, which leads to the respective change of the correlation length of the vacuum in the models under study. Besides that, it turns out that such a screening leads also to the appearance of the long-range contribution to one of …
The correlator of vector and nonsinglet axial-vector currents in the external electromagnetic field is calculated within the instanton liquid model of QCD vacuum. In general the correlator has two Lorentz structures: longitudinal w_L and transversal w_T with respect to axial-vector index. Within the instanton model the saturation of the anomalous w_L structure is demonstrated. It is known that in the chiral limit the transversal structure w_T is free from perturbative corrections. In this limit within the instanton model we calculate the transversal invariant function w_T at arbitrary momentum…
Recent dispersive techniques developed by us are applied to discuss three problems: 1. A long standing discrepan-cy between the measurements of $R(s)$ for $\sqrt{s} = (5÷7.5)GeV$ by Crystal Ball and MARK I has been analyzed and its consequences analyzed for the number of contributing quarks. 2. Noting that the perturbative $α_s$ has the wrong analyticity, analytic models consistent with asymptotic freedom (AF) and confinement have been constructed and applied to discuss $τ$ decay. 3. It is shown that AF leads to a wrong sign for $\im\big(α(s)\big)$ which signals an instability of the perturbat…
Equal time, point to point correlation functions for spatially separated meson currents are calculated with respect to a variational construct for the ground state of QCD. Given such an ansatz we make no further approximations in the evaluation of the correlators. Our calculations for the vector, axial vector and scalar channels show qualitative agreement with the phenomenological predictions, whereas the pseudoscalar channel does not. However, the pseudoscalar correlator, when approximated by saturating with intermediate one pion states agrees with results obtained from spectral density funct…
Glueball masses with J<=7 are computed both for C=+1 and C=-1 using the string Hamiltonian derived in the framework of the Vacuum Correlator Method. No fitting parameters are used, and masses are expressed in terms of string tension $σ$ and effective value of $α_s$. We extend the calculations done for J<=3 using the same Hamiltonian, which provided glueball masses in good agreement with existing lattice data, to higher mass states. It is shown that 3^{--}, 5^{--} and 7^{--} states lie on the odderon trajectories with the intercept around or below 0.14. Another odderon trajectory with 3g glueba…
We calculate the topological susceptibility of the Yang-Mills vacuum using the field correlator method. Our estimate for the SU(3) gauge group, χ^{1/4} = 196(7) MeV, is in a very good agreement with the results of recent numerical simulations of the Yang-Mills theory on the lattice.
The dispersive approach to quantum chromodynamics is applied to the study of the hadronic vacuum polarization function and associated quantities. This approach merges the intrinsically nonperturbative constraints, which originate in the kinematic restrictions on the respective physical processes, with corresponding perturbative input. The obtained hadronic vacuum polarization function agrees with pertinent lattice simulation data. The evaluated hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment and to the shift of the electromagnetic fine structure constant conform with recent assess…
Assuming the gluon field is well approximated by instanton configurations we derive a partition function and calculate the specific correlators. Namely, the heavy quark propagator and heavy quark-aniquark correlator with the account of the light quark determinant and QCD instanton vacuum properties. With these knowledge we calculate the light quark contribution to the interaction between heavy quarks, which might be essential for the properties of a few heavy quarks systems like oniums and double-heavy baryons.
We discuss the extraction of form factors from three-point sum rules making use of harmonic-oscillator model, where we derive the exact expression for the relevant correlator. We determine the form factor of the ground state by the standard procedures adopted in the method of sum rules, and compare the obtained results with the known exact values. We show that the uncontrollable uncertainty in the extracted value of the form factor is typically much larger than that for the decay constant. In the example considered, we find the uncontrolled systematic error in the extracted form factor to exce…

With exact calculations, vector, axial vector and scalar channels show qualitative agreement with the phenomenological predictions, where as pseudoscalar channel does not. However, the pseudoscalar correlator, when approximated by saturating with intermediate one pion states agrees with results obtained from spectral density functions parametrised by pion decay constant and $<\bar ψψ>$ value obtained from chiral perturbation…
Non-perturbatively computing the hadronic vacuum polarization at large photon virtualities and making contact with perturbation theory enables a precision determination of the electromagnetic coupling at the $Z$ pole, which enters global electroweak fits. In order to achieve this goal ab initio using lattice QCD, one faces the challenge that, at the short distances which dominate the observable, discretization errors are hard to control. Here we address challenges of this type with the help of static screening correlators in the high-temperature phase of QCD, yet without incurring any bias. Th…
The light quark propagation in the confining vacuum, described by an (infinite) set of gauge-invariant vacuum correlators, is studied in detail. To keep gauge invariance at each step the system of light quark and heavy antiquark is considered, and the nonlinear equations are written explicitly for the quark propagator in the limit of large $N_c$. For the lowest (Gaussian) correlator the system is studied in various approximations, and the relativistic WKB method is used to demonstrate the scalar confining interaction of light quarks, which implies chiral symmetry breaking. The chiral condensat…
The cancellation of perturbative contributions to the string tension in gluodynamics in the framework of vacuum field correlators method is shown at the order $O(g^4)$ by explicit calculation. The general pattern of these cancellations at all orders and relation with the renormalization properties of the Wilson loop is discussed.
We propose a simple parameterization of the two-point correlator of hadronic electromagnetic currents for the evaluation of the hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The parameterization is explicitly done in the Euclidean domain. The model function contains a phenomenological parameter which provides an infrared cutoff to guarantee the smooth behavior of the correlator at the origin in accordance with experimental data in e+ e- annihilation. After fixing a numerical value for this parameter from the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic mom…
The procedure of extracting the ground-state parameters from vacuum-to-vacuum and vacuum-to-hadron correlators within the method of sum rules is considered. The emphasis is laid on the crucial ingredient of this method - the effective continuum threshold. A new algorithm to fix this quantity is proposed and tested. First, a quantum-mechanical potential model which provides the only possibility to probe the reliability and the actual accuracy of the sum-rule method is used as a study case. In this model, our algorithm is shown to lead to a remarkable improvement of the accuracy of the extracted…
Bilocal correlator in gluodynamics is evaluated at finite temperature in the framework of instanton gas model. It is demonstrated that vacuum correlation length decreases with a growing temperature. Obtained results are compared with lattice data for the bilocal correlator at finite temperature. Density of instantons and possible structures of nonperturbative vacuum are discussed.
A test for the Gaussian and exponential Ansaetze for the nonperturbative parts of the coefficient functions, D^{nonpert.} and D_1^{nonpert.}, which parametrize the gauge-invariant bilocal correlator of the field strength tensors in the stochastic vacuum model of QCD, is proposed. It is based on the evaluation of the heavy-quark condensate within this model by making use of the world-line formalism and equating the obtained result to the one following directly from the QCD Lagrangian. This yields a certain relation between D^{nonpert.}(0) and D_1^{nonpert.}(0), which is further compared with an…
Assuming the gluon field is well approximated by instanton configurations we derive a light quarks determinant and calculate its contribution to the specific heavy quarks correlators -- namely, the heavy quark propagator and heavy quark-aniquark correlator, receiving the instanton generated light-heavy quarks interaction terms contributions. With these knowledge we calculate the light quark contribution to the interaction between heavy quarks, which might be essential for the properties of a few heavy quarks systems.
We propose a method to help control cutoff effects in the short-distance contribution to integrated correlation functions, such as the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP), using the corresponding screening correlators computed at finite temperature. The strategy is investigated with Wilson fermions at leading order, which reveals a logarithmically-enhanced lattice artifact in the short-distance contribution, whose coefficient is determined at this order. We then perform a numerical study with $N_\mathrm{f}=2$ O($a$)-improved Wilson fermions and a temperature $T\approx250~\mathrm{MeV}$, with lat…
We re-estimate the tensor susceptibility of QCD vacuum, $χ$, and to this end, we re-estimate the leptonic decay constants for transversely polarized $ρ$- ,~$ρ'$- and b_1-mesons. The origin of the susceptibility is analyzed using duality between $ρ$- and b_1- channels in a 2-point correlator of tensor currents. We confirm the results in Nucl.Phys. B283(1987)706 for the 2-point correlator of tensor currents and disagree with Phys.Lett. B395(1997)307 on both OPE expansion and the value of QCD vacuum tensor susceptibility. Using our value for the latter we determine new estimations of nucleon tens…
Puzzled or surprised by the almost incredible accuracy occasionally claimed in the literature to be achievable for numerical outcomes of QCD sum-rule analyses, we scrutinized the usual procedure employed for the extraction of the parameters of individual bound states from dispersive sum rules by taking advantage of the exact solvability of a quantum-mechanical harmonic-oscillator model: It turns out that the determination of the ground-state parameters (that is, decay constant and form factor) by requiring independence from the Borel mass in its stability window does not necessarily yield thei…
We compare the extraction of the ground-state decay constant from the two-point correlator in QCD and in potential models and show that the results obtained at each step of the extraction procedure follow a very similar pattern. We prove that allowing for a Borel-parameter-dependent effective continuum threshold yields two essential improvements compared to employing a Borel-parameter-independent quantity: (i) It reduces considerably the (unphysical) dependence of the extracted bound-state mass and the decay constant on the Borel parameter. (ii) In a potential model, where the actual value of …
The dispersive approaches to the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ$ are described. The main issues are discussed followed by perspectives in the next years.
The investigation of the scalar gluonium correlator is interesting because it carries the quantum numbers of the vacuum and the relevant hadronic current is related to the anomalous trace of the QCD energy-momentum tensor in the chiral limit. After reviewing the purely perturbative corrections known up to next-next-to-leading order, the behaviour of the correlator is studied to all orders by means of the large-beta_0 approximation. Similar to the QCD Adler function, the large-order behaviour is governed by the leading ultraviolet renormalon pole. The structure of infrared renormalon poles, bei…
It is argued that the dominant contribution to the interaction of quark gluon plasma at moderate $T\geq T_c$ is given by the nonperturbative vacuum field correlators. Basing on that nonperturbative equation of state of quark-gluon plasma is computed and in the lowest approximation expressed in terms of absolute values of Polyakov lines for quarks and gluons $L_{fund} (T); L_{adj}(T)=(L_{fund})^{9/4}$known from lattice and analytic calculations. Phase transition at any $μ$ is described as a transition due to vanishing of one of correlators, $ D^E(x)$, which implies the change of gluonic condens…
The dispersive approach to QCD and its applications to inclusive tau lepton hadronic decay and hadronic vacuum polarization function are briefly discussed.
The dispersive effects of vacuum polarization on the propagation of a strong circularly polarized electromagnetic wave through a cold collisional plasma are studied analytically. It is found that, due to the singular dielectric features of the plasma, the vacuum effects on the wave propagation in a plasma are qualitatively different and much larger than those in pure vacuum in the regime when the frequency of the propagating wave approaches the plasma frequency. A possible experimental setup to detect these effects in plasma is described.
The theory of confinement and deconfinement is discussed as based on the properties of the QCD vacuum. The latter are described by field correlators of colour-electric and colour-magnetic fields in the vacuum, which can be calculated analytically and on the lattice. As a result one obtains a self-consistent theory of the confined region in the (mu,T) plane with realistic hadron properties. At the boundary of the confining region, the colour-electric confining correlator vanishes, and the remaining correlators describe strong nonperturbative dynamics in the deconfined region with (weakly) bound…
Confinement in QCD is caused by vacuum fluctuations of gluon fields. There are two numerically different scales, characterizing nonperturbative QCD vacuum dynamics: a "small" scale, corresponding to gluon condensate, critical temperature etc, which is about 0.2-0.3 GeV, and a "large" one, given by inverse confining string width, glueball and gluelump masses etc, which is about 1.5-2.5 GeV. We discuss this mismatch in a picture where confinement is ensured by two-point gauge-invariant field strength correlator of special type. It supports most of perturbative and nonperturbative dynamics, while…
We show that there is only one physically acceptable vacuum state for quantum fields in de Sitter space-time which is left invariant under the action of the de Sitter-Lorentz group $SO(1,d)$ and supply its physical interpretation in terms of the Poincare invariant quantum field theory (QFT) on one dimension higher Minkowski spacetime. We compute correlation functions of the generalized vertex operator $:e^{i\hat{S}(x)}:$, where $\hat{S}(x)$ is a massless scalar field, on the $d$-dimensional de Sitter space and demonstrate that their limiting values at timelike infinities on de Sitter space rep…
We discuss the calculation of the leading hadronic vacuum polarization in lattice QCD. Exploiting the excellent quality of the compiled experimental data for the e^+e^- --> hadrons cross-section, we predict the outcome of large-volume lattice calculations at the physical pion mass, and design computational strategies for the lattice to have an impact on important phenomenological quantities such as the leading hadronic contribution to (g-2)mu and the running of the electromagnetic coupling constant. First, the R(s) ratio can be calculated directly on the lattice in the threshold region, and we…
Modifying the standard approaches to nonperturbative QCD based on Borel-transformed dispersive sum rules by allowing the effective continuum thresholds required for the implementation of quark-hadron duality to depend on the Borel parameters and on any relevant momentum promises to provide higher accuracy and reliable error estimates for the extracted predictions of hadron characteristics. A careful analysis reveals that the exact effective continuum thresholds do indeed exhibit dependence on the Borel parameter (and on external momenta) and that they are not universal but vary with the correl…
We propose a method to use lattice QCD to compute the Borel transform of the vacuum polarization function appearing in the Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov QCD sum rule. We construct the spectral sum corresponding to the Borel transform from two-point functions computed on the Euclidean lattice. As a proof of principle, we compute the $s \bar{s}$ correlators at three lattice spacings and take the continuum limit. We confirm that the method yields results that are consistent with the operator product expansion in the large Borel mass region. The method provides a ground on which the OPE analyses can…
The magnetic sector of SU(N) Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature is studied. At low temperatures, T<2T_c, the analytic expressions for the temperature dependence of the magnetic correlator, of the magnetic gluon condensate and of the spatial string tension are obtained. Fair agreement with lattice calculations for spatial string tension is obtained for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories. The relative contribution given by non-zero Matsubara modes to the spatial string tension is calculated. At T=2T_c this contribution is of the order of 5%. The behavior of magnetic correlator at high temperatu…
In this paper we improve the existing order parameter for monopole condensation in gauge theory vacuum, making it gauge-invariant from scratch and free of the spurious infrared problems which plagued the old one. Computing the new parameter on the lattice will unambiguously detect weather dual superconductivity is the mechanism for color confinement. As a byproduct we relate confinement to the existence of a finite correlation length in the gauge-invariant correlator of chromo-electric field strengths.
