We describe a cocompact model for the classifying space for proper actions of the mapping class group of a surface with punctures and boundary components. Our construction relies on a known model for the case of a closed surface and uses an induction on the number of punctures and boundary components.
We define the notion of a hierarchically cocompact classifying space for a family of subgroups of a group. Our main application is to show that the mapping class group $\mbox{Mod}(S)$ of any connected oriented compact surface $S$, possibly with punctures and boundary components and with negative Euler characteristic has a hierarchically cocompact model for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups of dimension at most $\mbox{vcd} \mbox{Mod}(S)+1$. When the surface is closed, we prove that this bound is optimal. In particular, this answers a question of Lück for mapping class groups of surfaces.
We give a bound for the geometric dimension for the family of virtually cyclic groups in mapping class groups of a compact surface with punctures, possibly with nonempty boundary and negative Euler characteristic.
We prove that the mapping stack Map(Y,X) of topological stacks X and Y is again a topological stack if Y admits a compact groupoid presentation. If Y admits a locally compact groupoid presentation, we show that Map(Y,X) is a paratopological stack. In particular, it has a classifying space (hence, a natural weak homotopy type). We prove an invariance theorem which shows that the weak homotopy type of the mapping stack Map(Y,X) does not change if we replace X by its classifying space, provided that Y is paracompact topological space. As an example, we describe the loop stack of the classifying s…
We prove that every finite connected simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to the quotient of a contractible manifold by proper actions of a virtually torsion-free group. As a corollary, we obtain that every finite connected simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to the classifying space for proper bundles of some virtual Poincaré duality group.
One way to understand the mod p homotopy theory of classifying spaces of finite groups is to compute their BZ/p-cellularization. In the easiest cases this is a classifying space of a finite group (always a finite p-group). If not, we show that it has infinitely many non-trivial homotopy groups. Moreover they are either p-torsion free or else infinitely many of them contain p-torsion. By means of techniques related to fusion systems we exhibit concrete examples where p-torsion appears.
Let G be a group acting isometrically with discrete orbits on a separable complete CAT(0)-space of bounded topological dimension. Under certain conditions, we give upper bounds for the Bredon cohomological dimension of G for the families of finite and virtually cyclic subgroups. As an application, we prove that the mapping class group of any closed, connected, and orientable surface of genus g greater than 1 admits a (9g-8)-dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. In addition, our results apply to fundamental groups of graphs of groups and groups acting on Euclidean bui…
We investigate two open questions in a cohomology theory relative to the family of finite subgroups. The problem of whether the F-cohomological dimension is subadditive is reduced to extensions by groups of prime order. We show that every finitely generated regular branch group has infinite rational cohomological dimension. Moreover, we prove that the first Grigorchuk group G is not contained in Kropholler's class HF .
We show that the classifying space of a $p$-local compact group is approximated by a telescope of classifying spaces of $p$-local finite groups. This result has numerous implications, like a Stable Elements Theorem for $p$-local compact groups, or the description of the homotopy type of certain mapping spaces.
This paper extends certain characterizations of nullhomotopic maps between p-compact groups to maps with target the p-completed classifying space of a connected Kac-Moody group and source the classifying space of either a p-compact group or a connected Kac-Moody group. A well known inductive principle for p-compact groups is applied to obtain general, mapping space level results. An arithmetic fiber square computation shows that a null map from the classifying space of a connected compact Lie group to the classifying space of a connected topological Kac-Moody group can be detected by restricti…
We prove a new kind of stabilisation result, "secondary homological stability", for the homology of mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with one boundary component. These results are obtained by constructing CW approximations to the classifying spaces of these groups, in the category of $E_2$-algebras, which have no $E_2$-cells below a certain vanishing line.
Let $G$ be an infinite discrete group. A classifying space for proper actions of $G$ is a proper $G$-CW-complex $X$ such that the fixed point sets $X^H$ are contractible for all finite subgroups $H$ of $G$. In this paper we consider the stable analogue of the classifying space for proper actions in the category of proper $G$-spectra and study its finiteness properties. We investigate when $G$ admits a stable classifying space for proper actions that is finite or of finite type and relate these conditions to the compactness of the sphere spectrum in the homotopy category of proper $G$-spectra a…
We determine the large scale geometry of the minimal displacement set of a hyperbolic isometry of a systolic complex. As a consequence, we describe the centraliser of such an isometry in a systolic group. Using these results, we construct a low-dimensional classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups of a group acting properly on a systolic complex. Its dimension coincides with the topological dimension of the complex if the latter is at least four. We show that graphical small cancellation complexes are classifying spaces for proper actions and that the groups acting on them…
We show that the natural map from the mapping class groups of surfaces to the automorphism groups of free groups, induces an infinite loop map on the classifying spaces of the stable groups after plus construction. The proof uses automorphisms of free groups with boundaries which play the role of mapping class groups of surfaces with several boundary components.
Let $\mathcal{N}_g$ be the mapping class group of a non-orientable closed surface. We prove that the proper cohomological dimension, the proper geometric dimension, and the virtual cohomological dimension of $\mathcal{N}_g$ are equal whenever $g\neq 4,5$. In particular, there exists a model for the classifying space of $\mathcal{N}_g$ for proper actions of dimension $\mathrm{vcd}(\mathcal{N}_g)=2g-5$. Similar results are obtained for the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface with boundaries and possibly punctures, and for the pure mapping class group of a non-orientable surface with …
Let $G$ be an infinite discrete group and let $\underline{E}G$ be a classifying space for proper actions of $G$. Every $G$-equivariant vector bundle over $\underline{E}G$ gives rise to a compatible collection of representations of the finite subgroups of $G$. We give the first examples of groups $G$ with a cocompact classifying space for proper actions $\underline{E}G$ admitting a compatible collection of representations of the finite subgroups of $G$ that does not come from a $G$-equivariant (virtual) vector bundle over $\underline{E}G$. This implies that the Atiyah-Hirzeburch spectral sequen…
Let G be a discrete group. We give methods to compute for a generalized (co-)homology theory its values on the Borel construction (EG x X)/G of a proper G-CW-complex X satisfying certain finiteness conditions. In particular we give formulas computing the topological K-(co)homology of the classifying space BG up to finite abelian torsion groups. They apply for instance to arithmetic groups, word hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups and discrete cocompact subgroups of almost connected Lie groups. For finite groups G these formulas are sharp. The main new tools we use for the K-theory calculat…
Let G be a discrete group for which the classifying space for proper G-actions is finite-dimensional. We find a space W such that for any such G, the classifying space PBG for proper G-bundles has the homotopy type of the W-nullification of BG. We use this to deduce some results concerning PBG and in some cases where there is a good model for PBG we obtain information about the BZ/p-nullification of BG.
Let $G$ be a group and $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of subgroups closed under conjugation and subgroups. A model for the classifying space $E_{\mathcal{F}} G$ is a $G$-CW-complex $X$ such that every isotropy group belongs to $\mathcal{F}$, and for all $H\in \mathcal{F}$ the fixed point subspace $X^H$ is contractible. The group $G$ is of type $\mathcal{F}\text{-}\mathrm{F}_{n}$ if it admits a model for $E_\mathcal{F} G$ with $n$-skeleton with compact orbit space. The main result of the article provides is a characterization of $\mathcal{F}\text{-}\mathrm{F}_{n}$ analogue to Brown's criterion for $…
Let G be a finite group and p a prime dividing its order. We define new collections of p-subgroups of G. We study the homotopy relations among them and with the standard collections of p-subgroups. We determine their ampleness and sharpness properties.
For any smooth compact manifold $W$ of dimension at least two we prove that the classifying spaces of its group of diffeomorphisms which fix a set of $k$ points or $k$ embedded disks (up to permutation) satisfy homology stability. The same is true for so-called symmetric diffeomorphisms of $W$ connected sum with $k$ copies of an arbitrary compact smooth manifold $Q$ of the same dimension. The analogues for mapping class groups as well as other generalisations will also be proved.
Using spaces of homomorphisms and the descending central series of the free groups, simplicial spaces are constructed for each integer q>1 and every topological group G, with realizations B(q,G) that filter the classifying space BG. In particular for q=2 this yields a single space B(2,G) assembled from all the n-tuples of commuting elements in G. Homotopy properties of the B(q,G) are considered for finite groups. Cohomology calculations are provided for compact Lie groups. The spaces B(2,G) are described in detail for transitively commutative groups.
We prove that the homology of the mapping class groups of non-orientable surfaces stabilizes with the genus of the surface. Combining our result with recent work of Madsen and Weiss, we obtain that the classifying space of the stable mapping class group of non-orientable surfaces, up to homology isomorphism, is the infinite loop space of a Thom spectrum build from the canonical bundle over the Grassmannians of 2-planes in R^{n+2}. In particular, we show that the stable rational cohomology is a polynomial algebra on generators in degrees 4i--this is the non-oriented analogue of the Mumford conj…
There is the problem, whether for a given virtually torsionfree discrete group $Γ$ there exists a cocompact proper topological $Γ$-manifold, which is equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the classifying space for proper actions. It is related to Nielsen's Realization and to the problem of Brown, whether there is a d-dimensional model for the classifying space for proper actions, if the underlying group has virtually cohomological dimension d. Assuming that the expected manifold model has a zero-dimensional singular set, we solve the problem in the Poincaré category and obtain new results about…
Tillmann introduced two infinite loop space structures on the plus construction of the classifying space of the stable mapping class group, each with different computational advantages. The first one uses disjoint union on a suitable cobordism category, whereas the second uses an operad which extends the pair of pants multiplication (i.e. the double loop space structure introduced by E. Y. Miller). She conjectured that these two infinite loop space structures were equivalent, and managed to prove that the first delooping are the same. In this paper, we resolve the conjecture by proving that th…
We study the moduli spaces which classify smooth surfaces along with a complex line bundle. There are homological stability and Madsen--Weiss type results for these spaces (mostly due to Cohen and Madsen), and we discuss the cohomological calculations which may be deduced from them. We then relate these spaces to (a generalisation of) Kawazumi's extended mapping class groups, and hence deduce cohomological information about these. Finally, we relate these results to complex algebraic geometry. We construct a holomorphic stack classifying families of Riemann surfaces equipped with a fibrewise h…
Combining results of Wahl, Galatius--Madsen--Tillmann--Weiss and Korkmaz one can identify the homotopy-type of the classifying space of the stable non-orientable mapping class group $N_\infty$ (after plus-construction). At odd primes p, the F_p-homology coincides with that of $Q_0(HP^\infty_+)$, but at the prime 2 the result is less clear. We identify the F_2-homology as a Hopf algebra in terms of the homology of well-known spaces. As an application we tabulate the integral stable homology of $N_\infty$ in degrees up to six. As in the oriented case, not all of these cohomology classes have a g…
Let G be a discrete group which acts properly and isometrically on a complete CAT(0)-space X. Consider an integer d with d=1 or d greater or equal to 3 such that the topological dimension of X is bounded by d. We show the existence of a G-CW-model E_fin(G) for the classifying space for proper G-actions with dim(E_fin(G)) less or equal to d. Provided that the action is also cocompact, we prove the existence of a G-CW-model E_vcyc(G) for the classifying space of the family of virtually cyclic subgroups such that dim(E_vcyc(G)) is less or equal to d+1.
A powerful way to study groups is via their actions on suitable spaces. Classifying spaces for families of subgroups are a type of these spaces, obtained by imposing some strict conditions on the fixed-point sets. We show how in the framework of knot theory the notion of classifying spaces for families pops out naturally and we provide explicit models for them. The study of their topological properties hints at the existence of arcane connections between knot theory and algebraic number theory. Trying to track these connections, we discovered a behavioural analogy between the fundamental group…
We compute the Chern subgroup of the 4-th integral cohomology group of a certain classifying space and show that it is a proper subgroup. Such a classifying space gives us new counterexamples for the integral Hodge and Tate conjectures modulo torsion.
We construct classifying spaces for discrete and compact Lie groups, with the property that they are topological groups and complete metric spaces in a natural way. We sketch a program in view of extending these constructions.
For a prime knot group, the classifying space for the family of the subgroups generated by the meridians can be seen as an abstract analogue of the ambient manifold in which the knot lives. An explicit model of this ambient classifying space is constructed as a branched covering space of the 3-sphere branched over the knot; more general branched covering spaces, obtained quotienting the ambient classifying space by finite-index normal subgroups, are studied. Various homological properties of said spaces are established, some of which have parallels in algebraic number theory. In particular, pr…
In this paper we apply the theory of finitely generated FI-modules developed by Church, Ellenberg and Farb to certain sequences of rational cohomology groups. Our main examples are the cohomology of the moduli space of n-pointed curves, the cohomology of the pure mapping class group of surfaces and some manifolds of higher dimension, and the cohomology of classifying spaces of some diffeomorphism groups. We introduce the notion of FI[G]-module and use it to strengthen and give new context to results on representation stability discussed by the author in a previous paper. Moreover, we prove tha…
We consider Γ-equivariant principal G-bundles over proper Γ-CW-complexes with prescribed family of local representations. We construct and analyze their classifying spaces for locally compact, second countable topological groups with finite covering dimension Γand G such that G is almost connected.
We compute rationally the topological (complex) K-theory of the classifying space BG of a discrete group provided that G has a cocompact G-CW-model for its classifying space for proper G-actions. For instance word-hyperbolic groups and cocompact discrete subgroups of connected Lie groups satisfy this assumption. The answer is given in terms of the group cohomology of G and of the centralizers of finite cyclic subgroups of prime power order. We also analyze the multiplicative structure.
We use the Steenrod algebra to study $CH^*BG$, the mod $p$ Chow ring of the classifying space of $G$. We describe a localization property which relates a given $G$ to its elementary abelian subgroups, and we study a number of particular cases, namely symmetric groups and Chevalley groups. It turns out that the Chow rings of these groups are completely determined by the abelian subgroups and their fusion.
We give the first examples of finite groups G such that the Chow ring of the classifying space BG depends on the base field, even for fields containing the algebraic closure of Q. As a tool, we give several characterizations of the varieties which satisfy Kunneth properties for Chow groups or motivic homology. We define the (compactly supported) motive of a quotient stack in Voevodsky's derived category of motives. This makes it possible to ask when the motive of BG is mixed Tate, which is equivalent to the motivic Kunneth property. We prove that BG is mixed Tate for various "well-behaved" fin…
We denote the $n$-th projective space of a topological monoid $G$ by $B_nG$ and the classifying space by $BG$. Let $G$ be a well-pointed topological monoid of the homotopy type of a CW complex and $G'$ a well-pointed grouplike topological monoid. We prove the weak equivalence between the pointed mapping space $\mathrm{Map}_0(B_nG,BG)$ and the space of all $A_n$-maps from $G$ to $G'$. This fact has several applications. As the first application, we show that the connecting map $G\rightarrow\mathrm{Map}_0(B_nG,BG)$ of the evaluation fiber sequence $\mathrm{Map}_0(B_nG,BG)\rightarrow\mathrm{Map}(…
For any topological bicategory B, the Duskin nerve NB of B is a simplicial space. We introduce the classifying topos BB of B as the Deligne topos of sheaves Sh(NB) on the simplicial space NB. It is shown that the category of geometric morphisms Hom(Sh(X),BB) from the topos of sheaves Sh(X) on a topological space X to the Deligne classifying topos is naturally equivalent to the category of principal B-bundles. As a simple consequence, the geometric realization |NB| of the nerve NB of a locally contractible topological bicategory B is the classifying space of principal B-bundles, giving a varian…
In this article we consider a space B_{com}G assembled from commuting elements in a Lie group G first defined in [Adem, Cohen, Torres-Giese 2012]. We describe homotopy-theoretic properties of these spaces using homotopy colimits, and their role as a classifying space for transitionally commutative bundles. We prove that ZxB_{com}U is a loop space and define a notion of commutative K-theory for bundles over a finite complex X which is isomorphic to [X,ZxB_{com}U]. We compute the rational cohomology of B_{com}G for G equal to any of the classical groups U(n), SU(n) and Sp(n), and exhibit the rat…
In a previous paper, we have constructed, for an arbitrary Lie group G and any of the fields F=R or C, a good equivariant cohomology theory KF_G^*(-) on the category of proper $G$-CW-complex and have justified why it deserved the label ``equivariant K-theory". It was shown in particular how this theory was a logical extension of the construction of Lück and Oliver for discrete groups and coincided with Segal's classical K-theory when G is a compact group and only finite G-CW-complexes are considered. Here, we compare our new equivariant K-theory with that of N.C. Phillips: it is shown how a na…
We consider brave new cochain extensions $F(BG_+,R)\to F(EG_+,R)$, where $R$ is either a Lubin-Tate spectrum $E_n$ or the related 2-periodic Morava K-theory $K_n$, and $G$ is a finite group. When $R$ is an Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum, in some good cases such an extension is a $G$-Galois extension in the sense of John Rognes, but not always faithful. We prove that for $E_n$ and $K_n$ these extensions are always faithful in the $K_n$ local category. However, for a cyclic $p$-group $C_{p^r}$, the cochain extension $F({BC_{p^r}}_+,E_n) \to F({EC_{p^r}}_+,E_n)$ is not a Galois extensions because it…
We define algebraic cobordism of classifying spaces, Ω^*(BG) and G-equivariant algebraic cobordism Ω^*_G(-) for a linear algebraic group G. We prove some properties of the coniveau filtration on algebraic cobordism, denoted F^j(Ω^*(-)), which are required for the definition to work. We show that G-equivariant cobordism satisfies the localization exact sequence. We calculate Ω^*(BG) for algebraic groups over the complex numbers corresponding to classical Lie groups GL(n), SL(n), Sp(n), O(n) and SO(2n+1). We also calculate Ω^*(BG) when G is a finite abelian group. A finite non-abelian group for …
A function from configuration space to moduli space of surface may induce a homomorphism between their fundamental groups which are braid groups and mapping class groups of surface, respectively. This map $ϕ: B_k \rightarrow Γ_{g,b}$ is induced by 3-fold branched covering over a disk with some branch points. In this thesis we give a concrete description of this map and show that it is injective by Birman-Hilden theory. This gives us a new interesting non-geometric embedding of braid group into mapping class group. On the other hand, we show that the map on the level of classifying spaces of gr…
We consider mapping class groups Γ(M) = pi_0 Diff(M fix \partial M) of smooth compact simply connected oriented 4-manifolds M bounded by a collection of 3-spheres. We show that if M contains CP^2 (with either orientation) as a connected summand then Γ(M) is independent of the number of boundary components. By repackaging classical results of Wall, Kreck and Quinn, we show that the natural homomorphism from the mapping class group to the group of automorphisms of the intersection form becomes an isomorphism after stabilization with respect to connected sum with CP^2 # \bar{CP^2}. We next consid…
We prove that in dimensions not equal to 4, 5, or 7, the homology and homotopy groups of the classifying space of the topological group of diffeomorphisms of a disk fixing the boundary are finitely generated in each degree. The proof uses homological stability, embedding calculus and the arithmeticity of mapping class groups. From this we deduce similar results for the homeomorphisms of $R^n$ and various types of automorphisms of 2-connected manifolds.
We extend the formalism of Topological T-duality to spaces which are the total space of a principal $S^1$-bundle $p:E \to W$ with an $H$-flux in $H^3(E,Z)$ together the together with an automorphism of the continuous-trace algebra on $E$ determined by $H$. The automorphism is a `topological approximation' to a gerby gauge transformation of spacetime. We motivate this physically from Buscher's Rules for T-duality. Using the Equivariant Brauer Group, we connect this problem to the $C^{\ast}$-algebraic formalism of Topological T-duality of Mathai and Rosenberg. We show that the study of this prob…
