Combining results of Wahl, Galatius--Madsen--Tillmann--Weiss and Korkmaz one can identify the homotopy-type of the classifying space of the stable non-orientable mapping class group $N_\infty$ (after plus-construction). At odd primes p, the F_p-homology coincides with that of $Q_0(HP^\infty_+)$, but at the prime 2 the result is less clear. We identify the F_2-homology as a Hopf algebra in terms of the homology of well-known spaces. As an application we tabulate the integral stable homology of $N_\infty$ in degrees up to six.
As in the oriented case, not all of these cohomology classes have a geometric interpretation. We determine a polynomial subalgebra of $H^*(N_\infty ; F_2)$ consisting of geometrically-defined characteristic classes.
We construct several families of embeddings of braid groups into mapping class groups of orientable and non-orientable surfaces and prove that they induce the trivial map in stable homology in the orientable case, but not so in the non-orientable case. We show that these embeddings are non-geometric in the sense that the standard generators of the braid group are not mapped to Dehn twists.
Wahl recently proved that the homology of the non-orientable mapping class group stabilizes as the genus increases. In this short note we analyse the situation where the underlying non-orientable surfaces have marked points.
I discuss the problem of realizing families of complex orientable homology theories as families of commutative ring spectra, including a recent result of Jacob Lurie emphasizing the role of p-divisible groups.
We prove that the homology of the mapping class groups of non-orientable surfaces stabilizes with the genus of the surface. Combining our result with recent work of Madsen and Weiss, we obtain that the classifying space of the stable mapping class group of non-orientable surfaces, up to homology isomorphism, is the infinite loop space of a Thom spectrum build from the canonical bundle over the Grassmannians of 2-planes in R^{n+2}. In particular, we show that the stable rational cohomology is a polynomial algebra on generators in degrees 4i--this is the non-oriented analogue of the Mumford conj…
This paper is a survey of the relationship between labelled configuration spaces, mapping class groups with marked points and function spaces. In particular, we collect calculations of the cohomology groups for the mapping class groups of low-genus orientable and non-orientable surfaces.
We determine a nice simple formula for the largest Euclidean space for which there is an orientable n-manifold with a nonimmersion detected by Stiefel-Whitney classes. For Spin manifolds, we prove the analogue of the upper bound and establish the complete answer for n<24 and n=33,34. Results similar to many of these were obtained some 50 years ago, but in a much less tractable form. The sharp results for Spin manifolds require detailed calculations of ko-homology groups of mod-2 Eilenberg-MacLane spaces.
The rational homology of unordered configuration spaces of points on any surface was studied by Drummond-Cole and Knudsen. We compute the rational cohomology of configuration spaces on a closed orientable surface, keeping track of the mixed Hodge numbers and the action of the symplectic group on the cohomology. We find a series with coefficients in the Grothendieck ring of sp(2g) that describes explicitly the decomposition of the cohomology into irreducible representations. From that we deduce the mixed Hodge numbers and the Betti numbers, obtaining a new formula without cancellations.
We show the Teichmüller space of a non-orientable surface with marked points (considered as a Klein surface) can be identified with a subspace of the Teichmüller space of its orientable double cover. Also, it is well known that the mapping class group $\text{Mod} (N_g; k)$ of a non-orientable surface can be identified with a subgroup of $\text{Mod} (S_{g-1}; 2k)$, the mapping class group of its orientable double cover. These facts together with the classical Nielsen realization theorem are used to prove that every finite subgroup of $\text{Mod}(N_g; k)$ can be lifted isomorphically to a subgro…
We consider the Birman-Hilden inclusion $φ\colon\mathfrak{Br}_{2g+1}\toΓ_{g,1}$ of the braid group into the mapping class group of an orientable surface with boundary, and prove that $φ$ is stably trivial in homology with twisted coefficients in the symplectic representation $H_1(Σ_{g,1})$ of the mapping class group; this generalises a result of Song and Tillmann regarding homology with constant coefficients. Furthermore we show that the stable homology of the braid group with coefficients in $φ^*(H_1(Σ_{g,1}))$ has only $4$-torsion.
Let $Σ_g$ denote the closed orientable surface of genus $g$ and fix an arbitrary simplicial triangulation of $Σ_g$. We construct and study a natural surjective group homomorphism from the surface braid group on $n$ strands on $Σ_g$ to the first singular homology group of $Σ_g$ with integral coefficients. In particular, we show that the kernel of this homomorphism is generated by canonical braids which arise from the triangulation of $Σ_g$. This provides a simple description of natural subgroups of surface braid groups which are closely tied to the homology groups of the surfaces $Σ_g$.
We calculate the homology of the mapping class group in the stable range. The calculation is based on Madsen and Weiss' proof of the "Generalised Mumford Conjecture".
We compute the mod 2 homology of spin mapping class groups in the stable range. In earlier work we computed the stable mod p homology of the oriented mapping class group, and the methods and results here are very similar. The forgetful map from the spin mapping class group to the oriented mapping class groups induces a homology isomorphism for odd p but for p=2 it is far from being an isomorphism. We include a general discussion of tangential structures on 2-manifolds and their mapping class groups and then specialise to spin structures. As in Madsen and Weiss' solution to Mumford's conjecture…
Let $\mathcal{N}_g$ be the mapping class group of a non-orientable closed surface. We prove that the proper cohomological dimension, the proper geometric dimension, and the virtual cohomological dimension of $\mathcal{N}_g$ are equal whenever $g\neq 4,5$. In particular, there exists a model for the classifying space of $\mathcal{N}_g$ for proper actions of dimension $\mathrm{vcd}(\mathcal{N}_g)=2g-5$. Similar results are obtained for the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface with boundaries and possibly punctures, and for the pure mapping class group of a non-orientable surface with …
In this paper, we deal with stable homology computations with twisted coefficients for mapping class groups of surfaces and of 3-manifolds, automorphism groups of free groups with boundaries and automorphism groups of certain right-angled Artin groups. On the one hand, the computations are led using semidirect product structures arising naturally from these groups. On the other hand, we compute the stable homology with twisted coefficients by FI-modules. This notably uses a decomposition result of the stable homology with twisted coefficients for pre-braided monoidal categories proved in this …
In this paper we give a geometric construction of the Borel equivariant (co)homology for spaces with a $G$-action, where $G$ is a compact Lie group with the property that the adjoint representation is orientable. A nice feature of these constructions is that there are corresponding Poincaré dual (co)homology theories called backwards (co)homology. This gives rise to a third relative (co)homology theory which we call stratifold Tate (co)homology. These Tate groups agree with the original definition of Tate cohomology for finite groups given by Swan. All constructions in this paper are geometric…
The loop homology of a closed orientable manifold $M$ of dimension $d$ is the ordinary homology of the free loop space $M^{S^1}$ with degrees shifted by $d$, i.e. $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1}) = H_{*+d}(M^{S^1})$. Chas and Sullivan have defined a loop product on $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1})$ and an intersection morphism $I : \mathbb H_*(M^{S^1}) \to H_*(ΩM)$. The algebra $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1})$ is commutative and $I$ is a morphism of algebras. In this paper we produce a model that computes the algebra $\mathbb H_*(M^{S^1})$ and the morphism $I$. We show that the kernel of $I$ is nilpotent and that the image i…
We show that the pure mapping class group $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ of a non-orientable closed surface of genus $g\geqslant 2$ with $k\geqslant 1$ marked points has $p$-periodic cohomology for each odd prime $p$ for which $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ has $p$-torsion. Using the Yagita invariant and the cohomology classes obtained by the representation of subgroups of order $p$, we obtain that the $p$-period is less than or equal to $4$ when $g\geqslant 3$ and $k\geqslant 1$. Moreover, combining the Nielsen realization theorem and a characterization of the $p$-period given in terms of normalizers and centr…
In the case of a compact orientable pseudomanifold, a well-known theorem of M. Goresky and R. MacPherson says that the cap product with a fundamental class factorizes through the intersection homology groups. In this work, we show that this classical cap product is compatible with a cap product in intersection (co)-homology, that we have previously introduced. If the pseudomanifold is also normal, for any commutative ring of coefficients, the existence of a classical Poincaré duality isomorphism is equivalent to the existence of an isomorphism between the intersection homology groups correspon…
Let $Γ_{g,1}^m$ be the mapping class group of the orientable surface $Σ_{g,1}^m$ of genus $g$ with one parametrised boundary curve and $m$ permutable punctures; when $m=0$ we omit it from the notation. Let $β_{m}(Σ_{g,1})$ be the braid group on $m$ strands of the surface $Σ_{g,1}$. We prove that $H_*(Γ_{g,1}^m;\mathbb{Z}_2)\cong H_*(Γ_{g,1};H_*(β_{m}(Σ_{g,1});\mathbb{Z}_2))$. The main ingredient is the computation of $H_*(β_{m}(Σ_{g,1});\mathbb{Z}_2)$ as a symplectic representation of $Γ_{g,1}$.
There are only 10 Euclidean forms, that is flat closed three dimensional manifolds: six are orientable and four are non-orientable. The aim of this paper is to describe all types of $n$-fold coverings over orientable Euclidean manifolds $\mathcal{G}_{3}$ and $\mathcal{G}_{5}$, and calculate the numbers of non-equivalent coverings of each type. We classify subgroups in the fundamental groups $π_1(\mathcal{G}_{3})$ and $π_1(\mathcal{G}_{5})$ up to isomorphism and calculate the numbers of conjugated classes of each type of subgroups for index $n$. The manifolds $\mathcal{G}_{3}$ and $\mathcal{G}_…
We prove a finiteness result for the $\partial$-patterned guts decomposition of all 3-manifolds obtained by splitting a given orientable, irreducible and $\partial$-irreducible 3-manifold along a closed incompressible surface. Then using the Thurston norm, we deduce that the JSJ-pieces of all 3-manifolds dominated by a given compact 3-manifold belong, up to homeomorphism, to a finite collection of compact 3-manifolds. We show also that any closed orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many integral homology spheres and any compact 3-manifolds orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitel…
We show that a closed orientable 3-manifold M admits an action of Z_p with fixed point set S^1 iff M can be obtained as the result of surgery on a p-periodic framed link L and Z_p acts freely on the components of L. We prove a similar theorem for free Z_p-actions. As an interesting application, we prove the following, rather unexpected result: for any M as above and for any odd prime p, H_1(M, Z_p)\ne Z_p. We also prove a similar criterion of 2-periodicity for rational homology 3-spheres.
In the context of orientable circuits and subcomplexes of these as representing certain singular spaces, we consider characteristic class formulas generalizing those classical results as seen for the Riemann-Hurwitz formula for regulating the topology of branched covering maps and that for monoidal transformations which include the standard blowing-up process. Here the results are presented as cap product pairings, which will be elements of a suitable homology theory, rather than characteristic numbers as would be the case when taking Kronecker products once Poincaré duality is defined. We fur…
We construct a graph complex calculating the integral ho- mology of the bordered mapping class groups. We compute the ho- mology of the bordered mapping class groups of various surfaces. Using the circle action on this graph complex, we build a double complex and a spectral sequence converging to the homology of the unbordered mapping class groups. We compute the homology of the punctured mapping class groups associated to certain surfaces. Finally, we use Miller's operad to get the first Kudo-Araki and Browder operations on our graph complex. We also consider an unstable version of the higher…
We report on the computation of the integral homology of the mapping class group of genus g surfaces with one boundary curve and m punctures, when 2g + m is smaller than 6. In particular, it includes the genus 2 case with no or one puncture.
There are only 10 Euclidean forms, that is flat closed three dimensional manifolds: six are orientable $\mathcal{G}_1,\dots,\mathcal{G}_6$ and four are non-orientable $\mathcal{B}_1,\dots,\mathcal{B}_4$. The aim of this paper is to describe all types of $n$-fold coverings over the non-orientable Euclidean manifolds $\mathcal{B}_{3}$ and $\mathcal{B}_{4}$, and calculate the numbers of non-equivalent coverings of each type. The manifolds $\mathcal{B}_{3}$ and $\mathcal{B}_{4}$ are uniquely determined among non-orientable forms by their homology groups $H_1(\mathcal{B}_{3})=\ZZ_2\times \ZZ_2 \tim…
Finite-order invariants of knots in arbitrary 3-manifolds (including non-orientable ones) are constructed and studied by methods of the topology of discriminant sets. Obstructions to the integrability of admissible weight systems to well-defined knot invariants are identified as 1-dimensional cohomology classes of generalized loop spaces of the manifold. Unlike the case of the 3-sphere, these obstructions can be non-trivial and provide invariants of the manifold itself. The corresponding algebraic machinery allows us to obtain on the level of the ``abstract nonsense'' some of results and probl…
Let $H_{g}$ be a 3-dimensional handlebody of genus $g$. We determine the twisted first homology group of the mapping class group of $H_{g}$ with coefficients in the first integral homology group of the boundary surface $\partial H_{g}$ for $g\geq 2$.
We give definitions of moduli spaces of framed, r-Spin and Pin surfaces. We apply earlier work of the author to show that each of these moduli spaces exhibits homological stability, and we identify the stable integral homology with that of certain infinite loop spaces in each case. We further show that these moduli spaces each have path components which are Eilenberg--MacLane spaces for the framed, r-Spin and Pin mapping class groups respectively, and hence we also identify the stable group homology of these groups. In particular: the stable framed mapping class group has trivial rational homo…
Farrell and Hsiang noticed that the geometric surgery groups defined By Wall, Chapter 9, do not have the naturality Wall claims for them. They were able to fix the problem by augmenting Wall's definitions to keep track of a line bundle. The definition of geometric Wall groups involves homology with local coefficients and these also lack Wall's claimed naturality. One would hope that a geometric bordism theory involving non-orientable manifolds would enjoy the same naturality as that enjoyed by homology with local coefficients. A setting for this naturality entirely in terms of local coefficien…
The fixed point index of topological fixed point theory is a well studied integer-valued algebraic invariant of a mapping which can be characterized by a small set of axioms. The coincidence index is an extension of the concept to topological (Nielsen) coincidence theory. We demonstrate that three natural axioms are sufficient to characterize the coincidence index in the setting of continuous mappings on oriented differentiable manifolds, the most common setting for Nielsen coincidence theory.
Let Map(K,X) denote the space of pointed continuous maps from a finite cell complex K to a space X. Let E_* be a generalized homology theory. We use Goodwillie calculus methods to prove that under suitable conditions on K and X, Map(K, X) will send a E_*--isomorphism in either variable to a map that is monic in E_* homology. Interesting examples arise by letting E_* be K--theory, K be a sphere, and the map in the X variable be an exotic unstable Adams map between Moore spaces.
For any smooth compact manifold $W$ of dimension at least two we prove that the classifying spaces of its group of diffeomorphisms which fix a set of $k$ points or $k$ embedded disks (up to permutation) satisfy homology stability. The same is true for so-called symmetric diffeomorphisms of $W$ connected sum with $k$ copies of an arbitrary compact smooth manifold $Q$ of the same dimension. The analogues for mapping class groups as well as other generalisations will also be proved.
For given closed orientable 3-manifolds $M$ and $N$ let $cD(M,N)$ be the set of mapping degrees from $M$ to $N$. We address the problem: For which $N$, $cD(M,N)$ is finite for all $M$? The answer is known in Thurston's picture of closed orientable irreducible 3-manifolds unless the target is a non-trivial graph manifold. We prove that for each closed non-trivial graph manifold $N$, $cD(M,N)$ is finite for all graph manifold $M$. The proof uses a recently developed standard forms of maps between graph manifolds and the estimation of the $\widetilde{\rm PSL}(2,{\R})$-volume for certain class of …
In the paper we investigate the degree and the homotopy theory of Orlicz-Sobolev mappings $W^{1,P}(M,N)$ between manifolds, where the Young function $P$ satisfies a divergence condition and forms a slightly larger space than $W^{1,n}$, $n=\dim M$. In particular, we prove that if $M$ and $N$ are compact oriented manifolds without boundary and $\dim M=\dim N=n$, then the degree is well defined in $W^{1,P}(M,N)$ if and only if the universal cover of $N$ is not a rational homology sphere, and in the case $n=4$, if and only if $N$ is not homeomorphic to $S^4$.
We compute the rational stable homology of the automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups. These groups interpolate between the general linear groups over the ring of integers and the automorphism groups of free groups, and we employ functor homology to reduce to the abelian case. As an application, we also compute the rational stable homology of the outer automorphism groups and of the mapping class groups of the associated aspherical nil-manifolds in the TOP, PL, and DIFF categories.
