We study geometrical aspects of the space of fibrations between two given manifolds M and B, from the point of view of Frechet geometry. As a first result, we show that any connected component of this space is the base space of a Frechet-smooth principal bundle with the identity component of the group of diffeomorphisms of M as total space. Second, we prove that the space of fibrations is also itself the total space of a smooth Frechet principal bundle with structure group the group of diffeomorphisms of the base B.
In this work, we (partially) generalize two classical tools in study of collapsed manifolds with bounded sectional curvature: a (singular) fibration theorem by Fukaya (1987) and Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov (1992), and the stability for isometric compact Lie group actions on manifolds by Palais (1961) and Grove-Karcher (1973), to manifolds with local bounded Ricci covering geometry. Our two generalized results have been used in a recent work of Xiaochun Rong in generalizing Gromov's almost flat manifolds theorem to maximally collapsed manifolds with local bounded Ricci covering geometry.
We deal with Riemannian properties of the octonionic Hopf fibration S^{15}-->S^8, in terms of the structure given by its symmetry group Spin(9). In particular, we show that any vertical vector field has at least one zero, thus reproving the non-existence of S^1 subfibrations. We then discuss Spin(9)-structures from a conformal viewpoint and determine the structure of compact locally conformally parallel Spin(9)-manifolds. Eventually, we give a list of examples of locally conformally parallel Spin(9)-manifolds.
We continue the study of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror symmetry conjecture. Roughly put, this states that if two Calabi-Yau manifolds X and Y are mirror partners, then X and Y have special Lagrangian torus fibrations which are dual to each other. Much work on this conjecture is necessarily of a speculative nature, as in dimension 3 it is still a very difficult problem of how to construct such fibrations. Nevertheless, assuming the existence of such fibrations there are many things one can prove. This paper covers a number of issues. First it applies results from the theory of completely int…
We calculate curvature tensors of metrics on the total spaces of holomorphic fibrations. Our main tool is a theory of Chern connections and curvature forms for possibly degenerate Hermitian forms on holomorphic vector bundles. We prove a version of the Codazzi-Griffiths equations for curvatures of sub- and quotient bundles in that setting and apply them to the study of honest Hermitian metrics on fibrations. We apply this to calculate the curvature of a metric on Grassmannian bundles and prove they have positive holomorphic sectional curvature if the base does.
We study isometric circle actions on 7 dimensional positively curved Eschenburg spaces which are almost free, thus giving rise to orbifold fibrations of these spaces. This shows in particular that every known example of compact manifolds with positive sectional curvature is the total space of an orbifold fibration. We then study in detail the geometry of the singular locus and how to minimize it. As a consequence we obtain, for example, a six dimensional compact positively curved orbifold with only two singular points with orbifold groups Z_2.
In this paper we show that a certain solvable Lie group constructed in a paper by Benson and Gordon has no lattices. This result answers (in the negative way) a question posed by several authors in the context of symplectic geometry. The main theorem is proved with the use of rational homotopy theory.
We study the quaternionic Calabi-Yau problem in HKT geometry introduced by Alesker and Verbitsky on 8-dimensional 2-step nilmanifolds with an abelian hypercomplex structure. We show that the quaternionic Monge-Ampère equation on these manifolds can always be solved for every data which is invariant by the action of a 3-dimensional torus.
In this paper we investigate the geometry of Calibrated submanifolds and study relations between their moduli-space and geometry of the ambient manifold. In particular for a Calabi-Yau manifold we define Special Lagrangian submanifolds for any Kahler metric on it. We show that for a choice of Kahler metric the Borcea-Voisin threefold has a fibration structure with generic fiber being a Special Lagrangian torus. Moreover we construct a mirror to this fibration. Also for any closed G_2 form on a 7-manifold we study coassociative submanifolds and we show that one example of a G_2 manifold constru…
A fibration of a Riemannian manifold is fiberwise homogeneous if there are isometries of the manifold onto itself, taking any given fiber to any other one, and preserving fibers. Examples are fibrations of Euclidean n-space by parallel n-planes, and the Hopf fibrations of the round n-sphere by great n-spheres. In this paper, we describe all the fiberwise homogeneous fibrations of Euclidean and hyperbolic 3-space by geodesics. Our main result is that, up to fiber-preserving isometries, there is precisely a one-parameter family of such fibrations of Euclidean 3-space, and a two-parameter family …
We present a classification of the complete, simply connected, contact metric $(κ,μ)$-spaces as homogeneous contact metric manifolds, by studying the base space of their canonical fibration. According to the value of the Boeckx invariant, it turns out that the base is a complexification or a para-complexification of a sphere or of a hyperbolic space. In particular, we obtain a new homogeneous representation of the contact metric $(κ,μ)$-spaces with Boeckx invariant less than $-1$.
We investigate complete noncompact Ricci-flat manifolds which are not of maximal volume growth. We show that the manifolds with a curvature decay condition and a holonomy decay condition are asymptotic to torus fibrations over ALE spaces. In particular, we classify complete noncompact 4-dimensional hyperkäler manifolds by the volume growth. As an application, we give the uniqueness of tangent cones of collapsing manifolds with some conditions.
We consider the stable ruled surface $S_1$ over an elliptic curve. There is a unique foliation on $S_1$ transverse to the fibration. The minimal self-intersection sections also define a 2-web. We prove that the 4-web defined by the fibration, the foliation and the 2-web is locally parallelizable.
Tangent categories are categories equipped with a tangent functor: an endofunctor with certain natural transformations which make it behave like the tangent bundle functor on the category of smooth manifolds. They provide an abstract setting for differential geometry by axiomatizing key aspects of the subject which allow the basic theory of these geometric settings to be captured. Importantly, they have models not only in classical differential geometry and its extensions, but also in algebraic geometry, combinatorics, computer science, and physics. This paper develops the theory of "different…
We prove a theorem that gives a sufficient condition for the full basic automorphism group of a complete Cartan foliation to admit a unique (finite-dimensional) Lie group structure in the category of Cartan foliations. Emphasize that the transverse Cartan geometry may not be effective. Some estimates of the dimension of this group depending on the transverse geometry are found. Further, we investigate Cartan foliations covered by fibrations. When the global holonomy group of that foliation is discrete, we obtain the explicit new formula for determining its basic automorphism Lie group. Example…
The usual formulation of time-dependent mechanics implies a given splitting $Y=R\times M$ of an event space $Y$. This splitting, however, is broken by any time-dependent transformation, including transformations between inertial frames. The goal is the frame-covariant formulation of time-dependent mechanics on a bundle $Y\to R$ whose fibration $Y\to M$ is not fixed. Its phase space is the vertical cotangent bundle $V^*Y$ provided with the canonical 3-form and the corresponding canonical Poisson structure. An event space of relativistic mechanics is a manifold $Y$ whose fibration $Y\to R$ is no…
Nondegeneracy conditions need to be imposed in K.A.M. theorems to insure that the set of diophantine tori has a large measure. Although they are usually expressed in action coordinates, it is possible to give a geometrical formulation using the notion of regular completely integrable systems defined by a fibration of a symplectic manifold by lagrangian tori together with a Hamiltonian function constant on the fibers. In this paper, we give a geometrical definition of different nondegeneracy conditions, we show the implication relations that exist between them, and we show the uniqueness of the…
In this paper, we consider an equivalence problem of second order partially differential equations (PDE) and a duality of the flat differential equation. For the equivalence problem, explicit form of invariants (curvatures) are given. We also investigate a duality associated with the flat equation using double fibrations. These double fibrations are described in terms of transformation groups.
We explicitly construct special Lagrangian fibrations on finite quotients of maximally degenerating abelian varieties, glue with Berkovich retraction in non-Archimedean geometry by using "hybrid" technique. We also study their symmetries explicitly which can be regarded as crystallographic groups. In particular, a conjecture of Kontsevich-Soibelman is solved at an enhanced level for finite quotients of abelian varieties in any dimension.
Let X be a smooth elliptic fibration over a smooth base B. Under mild assumptions, we establish a Fourier-Mukai equivalence between the derived categories of two objects, each of which is an O^* gerbe over a genus one fibration which is a twisted form of X. The roles of the gerbe and the twist are interchanged by our duality. We state a general conjecture extending this to allow singular fibers, and we prove the conjecture when X is a surface. The duality extends to an action of the full modular group. This duality is related to the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow version of mirror symmetry, to twisted …
We corrected a few errors in the previous submission. These do not affect any of the topological conclusions of the earlier version. We have also included a few observations about the Casson invariant of the Brieskorn homology spheres.
We prove that for a fibration of simply-connected spaces of finite type $F\hookrightarrow E\to B$ with $F$ being positively elliptic and $H^*(F,\qq)$ not possessing non-trivial derivations of negative degree, the base $B$ is formal if and only if the total space $E$ is formal. Moreover, in this case the fibration map is a formal map. As a geometric application we show that positive quaternion Kähler manifolds are formal and so are their associated twistor fibration maps.
This is a book aimed at graduate students and researchers in symplectic geometry, based on a course I taught in 2019. The primary message is that the base of a Lagrangian torus fibration inherits an integral affine structure, which you can use to "read off" a lot of interesting geometry of the total space. Topics covered include: action-angle coordinates, symplectic reduction, toric manifolds, visible and tropical Lagrangians, almost toric systems, Milnor fibres of cyclic quotient singularities, mutation of polygons, non-toric blow-up, an almost toric view on Lisca's classification of fillings…
We review how a reduction procedure along a principal fibration and an unfolding procedure associated to a suitable momentum map allow to describe the Kähler geometry of a finite dimensional complex projective spaces.
The basic setup consists of a complex flag manifold $Z=G/Q$ where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group and $Q$ is a parabolic subgroup, an open orbit $D = G_0(z) \subset Z$ where $G_0$ is a real form of $G$, and a $G_0$--homogeneous holomorphic vector bundle $\mathbb E \to D$. The topic here is the double fibration transform ${\cal P}: H^q(D;{\cal O}(\mathbb E)) \to H^0({\cal M}_D;{\cal O}(\mathbb E'))$ where $q$ is given by the geometry of $D$, ${\cal M}_D$ is the cycle space of $D$, and $\mathbb E' \to {\cal M}_D$ is a certain naturally derived holomorphic vector bundle. Schubert intersecti…
