We consider Schrödinger operators on [0,\infty) with compactly supported, possibly complex-valued potentials in L^1([0,\infty)). It is known (at least in the case of a real-valued potential) that the location of eigenvalues and resonances determines the potential uniquely. From the physical point of view one expects that large resonances are increasingly insignificant for the reconstruction of the potential from the data. In this paper we prove the validity of this statement, i.e., we show conditional stability for finite data. As a by-product we also obtain a uniqueness result for the inverse resonance problem for complex-valued potentials.
We prove that the inverse scattering problem for the Schrödinger operator with the separable potential can be reduced to the solving of a certain singular integral equation. We establish the uniqueness of the potential corresponding to given scattering amplitude in the class of separable potentials.
Convergence and stability results for the inverse Born series [Moskow and Schotland, Inverse Problems, 24:065005, 2008] are generalized to mappings between Banach spaces. We show that by restarting the inverse Born series one obtains a class of iterative methods containing the Gauss-Newton and Chebyshev-Halley methods. We use the generalized inverse Born series results to show convergence of the inverse Born series for the Schrödinger problem with discrete internal measurements. In this problem, the Schrödinger potential is to be recovered from a few measurements of solutions to the Schrödinge…
The inverse scattering problem of the reconstruction of the unknown potential with compact support in the 3-d Schrödinger equation is considered. Only the modulus of the scattering complex valued wave field is known, whereas the phase is unknown. It is shown that the unknown potential can be reconstructed via the inverse Radon transform. Therefore, a long standing problem posed in 1977 by K. Chadan and P.C. Sabatier in their book "Inverse Problems in Quantum Scattering Theory" is solved.
An inverse problem is considered for an inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation. Assuming that the potential vanishes outside a finite interval and satisfies some other technical assumptions, one proves the uniqueness of the recovery of this potential from the knowledge of the wave function at the ends of the above interval for all energies. An algorithm is given for the recovery of the potential from the above data.
We describe the generic behavior of the resonance counting function for a Schrödinger operator with a bounded, compactly-supported real or complex valued potential in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. This note contains a sketch of the proof of our main results \cite{ch-hi1,ch-hi2} that generically the order of growth of the resonance counting function is the maximal value $d$ in the odd dimensional case, and that it is the maximal value $d$ on each nonphysical sheet of the logarithmic Riemann surface in the even dimensional case. We include a review of previous results concerning the resonance counting …
We study the inverse spectral problem for periodic Schrödinger opera\-tors of kind $- \frac{1}{2} \hbar^2 Δ_x + V(x)$ on the flat torus $\Bbb T^n := (\Bbb R / 2 π\Bbb Z)^n$ with potentials $V \in C^{\infty} (\Bbb T^n)$. We show that if two operators are isospectral for any $0 < \hbar \le 1$ then they have the same effective Hamiltonian given by the periodic homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi equation. This result provides a necessary condition for the isospectrality of these Schrödinger operators. We also provide a link between our result and the spectral limit of quantum integrable systems.
In this work we study the inverse scattering problem for the selfadjoint matrix Schrodinger operator on the half line. We provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the inverse scattering problem.
We show that the resonance counting function for a Schrödinger operator has maximal order of growth for generic sets of real-valued, or complex-valued, $L^\infty$-compactly supported potentials.
We relax the regularity condition on potentials of Schrödinger equations in the uniqueness results in \cite{EB} and \cite{IY2} for the inverse boundary value problem of determining a potential by Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.
We establish semiclassical resolvent estimates for Schrödinger operators with long-range matrix-valued potentials. As an application we prove resonance free domains both in trapping and non-trapping situations. Our results generalize the well-known results of \cite{Burq1, Martinez1} in the case of scalar Schrödinger operators.
In this paper we prove stable determination of an inverse boundary value problem associated to a magnetic Schrödinger operator assuming that the magnetic and electric potentials are essentially bounded and the magnetic potentials admit a Hölder-type modulus of continuity in the sense of $L^2$.
We give a complete characterisation of the reflectionless Schrödinger operators on the line with integrable potentials, solve the inverse scattering problem of reconstructing such potentials from the eigenvalues and norming constants, and derive the corresponding generalized soliton solutions of the Korteweg--de Vries equation
New inverse and half-inverse problems: {\it sliding problems} are introduced. In this way several physically important equations are recovered from the quantum defect. In particular, sliding problems are solved for radial Schrödinger equation, radial Dirac system and multidimensional Schrödinger equation. Systems with Coulomb-type potentials are considered as well.
In this talk, we report on results about the width of the resonances for a slowly varying perturbation of a periodic operator. The study takes place in dimension one. The perturbation is assumed to be analytic and local in the sense that it tends to a constant at $+\infty$ and at $-\infty$; these constants may differ. Modulo an assumption on the relative position of the range of the local perturbation with respect to the spectrum of the background periodic operator, we show that the width of the resonances is essentially given by a tunneling effect in a suitable phase space.
We prove a fixed frequency inverse scattering result for the magnetic Schrödinger operator (or connection Laplacian) on surfaces with Euclidean ends. We show that, under suitable decaying conditions, the scattering matrix for the operator determines both the gauge class of the connection and the zeroth order potential.
We study the direct and inverse scattering problem for the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with steplike potentials. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the scattering data to correspond to a potential with prescribed smoothness and prescribed decay to their asymptotics. These results are important for solving the Korteweg-de Vries equation via the inverse scattering transform.
We prove dispersive estimates for Schroedinger operators in dimension three without any assumptions on zero energy. Ie, we allows resonances and/or eigenvalues at zero energy.
We study an inverse scattering problem for a pair of Hamiltonians $(H(h), H\_0 (h))$ on $L^2 (\r^n)$, where $H\_0 (h) = -h^2 Δ$ and $H (h)= H\_0 (h) +V$, $V$ is a short-range potential with a regular behaviour at infinity and $h$ is the semiclassical parameter. We show that, in dimension $n \geq 3$, the knowledge of the scattering operators $S(h)$, $h \in ]0, 1]$, up to $O(h^\infty)$ in ${\cal{B}} (L^2(\r^n))$, and which are localized near a fixed energy $λ>0$, determine the potential $V$ at infinity.
We study the spectral projection associated to a barrier-top resonance for the semiclassical Schrodinger operator. First, we prove a resolvent estimate for complex energies close to such a resonance. Using that estimate and an explicit representation of the resonant states, we show that the spectral projection has a semiclassical expansion in integer powers of h, and compute its leading term. We use this result to compute the residue of the scattering amplitude at such a resonance. Eventually, we give an expansion for large times of the Schrodinger group in terms of these resonances.
We prove the absence of positive real resonances for Schrödinger operators with finitely many point interactions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and we discuss such a property from the perspective of dispersive and scattering features of the associated Schrödinger propagator.
If the dimension $d$ is even, the resonances of the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$ with $V$ bounded and compactly supported are points on $Λ$, the logarithmic cover of ${\mathbb C} \setminus \{0\}$. We show that for fixed sign potentials $V$ and for nonzero integers $m$, the resonance counting function for the $m$th sheet of $Λ$ has maximal order of growth.
We consider a semi-classical Schrödinger operator, -h^2Δ+ V(x). Assuming that the potential admits a unique global minimum and that the eigenvalues of the Hessian are linearly independent over the rationals, we show that the low-lying eigenvalues of the operator determine the Taylor series of the potential at the minimum.
We consider the inverse boundary value problem for the Schrodinger operator with time-dependent electromagnetic potentials in domains with obstacles. We extend the resuls of the author's works [E1], [E2], [E3] to the case of time-dependent potentials. We relate our results to the Aharonov-Bohm effect caused by magnetic and electric fluxes.
In dimension $d\geq 3$, we give examples of nontrivial, compactly supported, complex-valued potentials such that the associated Schrödinger operators have no resonances. If $d=2$, we show that there are potentials with no resonances away from the origin. These Schrödinger operators are isophasal and have the same scattering phase as the Laplacian on $\Real^d$. In odd dimensions $d\geq 3$ we study the fundamental solution of the wave equation perturbed by such a potential. If the space variables are held fixed, it is super-exponentially decaying in time.
The principal purpose of this note is to provide a reconstruction procedure for distributional matrix-valued potential coefficients of Schrödinger-type operators on a half-line from the underlying Weyl-Titchmarsh function.
We establish a global uniqueness result for an inverse boundary problem with partial data for the magnetic Schrödinger operator with a magnetic potential of class $W^{1,n}\cap L^\infty$, and an electric potential of class $L^n$. Our result is an extension, in terms of the regularity of the potentials, of the results [16] and [25]. As a consequence, we also show global uniqueness for a partial data inverse boundary problem for the advection-diffusion operator with the advection term of class $W^{1,n}\cap L^\infty$.
In this paper we consider a resonance problem, in a generic regime, in the consideration of relaxation of ground states of semilinear Schrodinger equations. Different from previous results, our consideration includes the presence of resonance, resulted by overlaps of frequencies of different states. All the known key results, proved under non-resonance conditions, have been recovered uniformly. These are achieved by better understandings of normal form transformation and Fermi Golden rule. Especially, we find that if certain denominators are zeros (or small), resulted by the presence of resona…
We study the uniqueness question for two inverse problems on graphs. Both problems consist in finding (possibly complex) edge or nodal based quantities from boundary measurements of solutions to the Dirichlet problem associated with a weighted graph Laplacian plus a diagonal perturbation. The weights can be thought of as a discrete conductivity and the diagonal perturbation as a discrete Schrödinger potential. We use a discrete analogue to the complex geometric optics approach to show that if the linearized problem is solvable about some conductivity (or Schrödinger potential) then the lineari…
The purpose of this paper is to give some refined results about the distribution of resonances in potential scattering. We use techniques and results from one and several complex variables, including properties of functions of completely regular growth. This enables us to find asymptotics for the distribution of resonances in sectors for certain potentials and for certain families of potentials.
For the direct problem, we give the asymptotic distribution of the (real and non-real) transmission eigenvalues for the Schrodinger operator on the half line. For the inverse problem, we prove that the potential can be uniquely determined by all transmission eigenvalues, the parameter in the boundary condition and some non-zero value related to the potential (whereas without the certain constant γ). The reconstruction algorithms are also revealed.
We consider a $2\times 2$ system of 1D semiclassical differential operators with two Schrödinger operators in the diagonal part and small interactions of order $h^ν$ in the off-diagonal part, where $h$ is a semiclassical parameter and $ν$ is a constant larger than $1/2$. We study the absence of resonance near a non-trapping energy for both Schrödinger operators in the presence of crossings of their potentials. The width of resonances is estimated from below by $Mh\log(1/h)$ and the coefficient $M$ is given in terms of the directed cycles of the generalized bicharacteristics induced by two Hami…
We consider a linear Schrödinger equation with a small nonlinear perturbation in $R^3$. Assume that the linear Hamiltonian has exactly two bound states and its eigenvalues satisfy some resonance condition. We prove that if the initial data is near a nonlinear ground state, then the solution approaches to certain nonlinear ground state as the time tends to infinity. Furthermore, the difference between the wave function solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and its asymptotic profile can have two different types of decay: 1. The resonance dominated solutions decay as $t^{-1/2}$. 2. The radi…
It is a classical derivation that the Wigner equation, derived from the Schrödinger equation that contains the quantum information, converges to the Liouville equation when the rescaled Planck constant $ε\to0$. Since the latter presents the Newton's second law, the process is typically termed the (semi-)classical limit. In this paper, we study the classical limit of an inverse problem for the Schrödinger equation. More specifically, we show that using the initial condition and final state of the Schrödinger equation to reconstruct the potential term, in the classical regime with $ε\to0$, becom…
In this paper, we study the inverse scattering problem for energy-dependent Schrödinger equations on the half-line with energy-dependent boundary conditions at the origin. Under certain positivity and very mild regularity assumptions, we transform this scattering problem to the one for non-canonical Dirac systems and show that, in turn, the latter can be placed within the known scattering theory for ZS-AKNS systems. This allows us to give a complete description of the corresponding scattering functions S for the class of problems under consideration and justify an algorithm of reconstructing t…
A two-dimensional generalized cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with complex coefficients for the group dispersion and nonlinear terms is used to investigate the evolution of a finite-amplitude localized initial perturbation. It is found that modulation of the latter can lead to side-band formation, wave condensation, collapse, turbulence, and inverse cascade, although not all together nor in that order.
This study presents the solutions of Schrödinger equation for the Non-Central Generalized Inverse Quadratic Yukawa Potential within the framework of Nikiforov-Uvarov. The radial and angular part of the Schrödinger equation are obtained using the method of variable separation. More so, the bound states energy eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions are obtained analytically. Numerical results were obtained for the Generalized Inverse Quadratic Yukawa Potential for comparison sake. It was found out that our results agree with existing literature.
In this paper we prove uniqueness for an inverse boundary value problem for the magnetic Schrödinger equation in a half space, with partial data. We prove that the curl of the magnetic potential $A$, when $A\in W_{comp}^{1,\infty}(\ov{\R^3_{-}},\R^3)$, and the electric pontetial $q \in L_{comp}^{\infty}(\ov{\R^3_{-}},\C)$ are uniquely determined by the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on parts of the boundary of the half space.
This licentiate thesis is concerned with an inverse boundary value problem for the magnetic Schrödinger equation in a half space, for compactly supported potentials $A\in W^{1,\infty}(\bar{\mathbb{R}^3_{-}},\R^3)$ and $q \in L^{\infty}(\bar{\mathbb{R}^3_{-}},\C)$. We prove that $q$ and the curl of $A$ are uniquely determined by the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on parts of the boundary of the half space. The existence and uniqueness of the corresponding direct problem are also considered.
We show that the knowledge of the set of the Cauchy data on the boundary of a bounded open set in $\R^n$, $n\ge 3$, for the magnetic Schrödinger operator with $L^\infty$ magnetic and electric potentials determines the magnetic field and electric potential inside the set uniquely. The proof is based on a Carleman estimate for the magnetic Schrödinger operator with a gain of two derivatives.
We study the asymptotic distribution of resonances for scattering by compactly supported potentials in hyperbolic space. We first establish an upper bound for the resonance counting function that depends only on the dimension and the support of the potential. We then establish the sharpness of this estimate by proving the a Weyl law for the resonance counting function holds in the case of radial potentials vanishing to some finite order at the edge of the support. As an application of the existence of potentials that saturate the upper bound, we derive additional resonance asymptotics that hol…
Matrix generalization of the inverse scattering method is developed to solve the multicomponent nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonvanishing boundary conditions. It is shown that the initial value problem can be solved exactly. The multi-soliton solution is obtained from the Gel'fand--Levitan--Marchenko equation.
In this work, inverse scattering transform for the sixth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with both zero and nonzero boundary conditions at infinity is given, respectively. For the case of zero nonzero boundary conditions, in terms of the Laurent's series and generalization of the residue theorem, the bound-state soliton is derived. For nonzero boundary conditions, using the robust inverse scattering transform, we present a matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem of the sixth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Then based on the obtained Riemann-Hilbert problem, the rogue wave and breather wave s…
We consider the partial data inverse boundary problem for the Schrödinger operator at a frequency $k>0$ on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 3$, with impedance boundary conditions. Assuming that the potential is known in a neighborhood of the boundary, we first show that the knowledge of the partial Robin-to-Dirichlet map at the fixed frequency $k>0$ along an arbitrarily small portion of the boundary, determines the potential in a logarithmically stable way. We prove, as the principal result of this work, that the logarithmic stability can be improved to the one of Hölder type in the h…
Let -Delta+V be the Schrodinger operator acting on L^2(R^d,C) with d>2 odd. Here V is a bounded real or complex function vanishing outside the closed ball of center 0 and of radius a. We show for generic potentials V that the number of resonances of -Delta+V with modulus less than r is approximatively equal to a constant times a^dr^d.
Let $Ω\subset \Bbb R^2$ be a bounded domain with $\partialΩ\in C^\infty$ and $L$ be a positive number. For a three dimensional cylindrical domain $Q=Ω\times (0,L)$, we obtain some uniqueness result of determining a complex-valued potential for the Schrödinger equation from partial Cauchy data when Dirichlet data vanish on a subboundary $(\partialΩ\setminus\widetildeΓ) \times [0,L]$ and the corresponding Neumann data are observed on $\widetildeΓ\times [0,L]$, where $\widetildeΓ$ is an arbitrary fixed open set of $\partialΩ.$
Let -Delta+V be the Schrodinger operator acting on L^2(R^d,C) with d odd larger than 2. Here V is a bounded real- or complex-valued function vanishing outside the closed ball of center 0 and radius a. If V belongs to the class of potentials introduced by Christiansen, we show that when r goes to infinity, the resonances of -Delta+V, scaled down by the factor r, are asymptotically distributed, with respect to an explicit probability distribution on the closed lower unit half-disc of the complex plane. The rate of convergence is also considered for subclasses of potentials.
