We study the weakly disordered Bose-Hubbard model on a cubic lattice through a one-loop renormalization group analysis of the corresponding effective field theory which is explicitly derived by combining a strong-coupling expansion with a replica average over the disorder. The method is applied not only to generic uncorrelated on-site disorder but also to simultaneous hopping disorder correlated with the differences of adjacent disorder potentials. Such correlations are inherent in fine-grained optical speckle potentials used as a source of disorder in optical lattice experiments. As a result of strong coupling, the strength of the replica mixing disorder vertex, responsible for the emergence of a Bose glass, crucially depends on the chemical potential and the Hubbard repulsion and vanishes to leading order in the disorder at commensurate boson fillings. As a consequence, at such fillings a direct transition between the Mott-insulator and the superfluid in the presence of disorder cannot be excluded on the basis of a one-loop calculation. At incommensurate fillings, at a certain length scale, the Mott insulator will eventually become unstable towards the formation of a Boss glass. Phase diagrams as a function of the microscopic parameters are presented and the finite-size crossover between the Mott-insulating state and the Bose glass is analyzed.
We study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model at unit filling for the scalar bosons and half filling for the $S=1/2$ fermions using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The bare interaction between the fermions is set to zero. A central question of our study is what type of interactions can be induced between the fermions by the bosons, for both weak and strong interspecies coupling. We find that the induced interactions can lead to competing instabilities favoring phase separation, superconducting phases, and density wave structures, in many cases at work on length sc…
The Bose-Hubbard model is well-defined description of a Bose solid which may be realistic for cold atoms in a periodic optical lattice. We show that contrary to accepted theories it can never have as a ground state a perfect Mott insulator solid and that it has a low-energy spectrum of vortex-like phase fluctuations. Whether the ground state is necessarily commensurate remains an open question.
We report our findings on quantum phase transitions in cold bosonic atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice using the finite size density matrix renormalization group method in the framework of the extended Bose-Hubbard model. We consider wide ranges of values for the filling factors and the nearest neighbor interactions. At commensurate fillings, we obtain two different types of charge density wave phases and a Mott insulator phase. However, departure from commensurate fillings yield the exotic supersolid phase where both the crystalline and the superfluid orders coexist. In addition, we o…
We study ground-state properties in a hard-core Bose-Hubbard model on a layered triangular lattice. Combining cluster mean-field theory with the density matrix renormalization group method, we discuss the effect of the interlayer coupling on the supersolid states realized in a single layered model. By examining the distributions for the particle density and superfluid order parameter, the rich phase diagram of the system is obtained. We find that the supersolid states are widely stabilized at a commensurate filling, in contrast to the case of the single layered model. The nature of the superso…
We address the effects of quenched disorder averaging in the time-evolution of systems of ultracold atoms in optical lattices in the presence of noise, imposed by of an environment. For bosonic systems governed by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we quantify the response of disorder in Hamiltonian parameters in terms of physical observables, including bipartite entanglement in the ground state and report the existence of disorder-induced enhancement in weakly interacting cases. For systems of two-species fermions described by the Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we find similar results. In both cases, …
We investigate the disorder effect on coherent fraction and the quantum phase transition of ultracold dilute Bose gases trapped in disordered optical lattices. Within the framework of Bogoliubov theory, an analytical expression for the particle density is derived and the dependence of coherent fraction on disorder strength as well as on lattice depth is discussed. In weak disorder regime, we find a decreased sensitivity of coherent fraction to disorder with the increase of on-site interaction strength. For strong disorder, the quantum phase boundary between superfluid phase and Bose glass phas…
We examine the effects of an artificial gauge field and finite temperature in a two-dimensional disordered Bose-Hubbard model. The disorder considered is diagonal and quenched in nature. A signature of disorder in the Bose-Hubbard model is the Bose glass phase. Our work shows that the introduction of an artificial gauge field enhances the domain of the Bose glass phase in the phase diagram. Most importantly, the size of the domain can be tuned with the strength of the artificial gauge field. The introduction of the finite temperature effects is essential to relate theoretical results with the …
Using an unbiased quantum Monte Carlo method, we obtain convincing evidence of the existence of a checkerboard supersolid at a {\it commensurate} filling factor 1/2 (commensurate supersolid) in the soft-core Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor repulsions on a cubic lattice. In conventional cases, supersolids are realized at incommensurate filling factors by a doped-defect-condensation mechanism, where particles (holes) doped into a perfect crystal act as interstitials (vacancies) and delocalize in the crystal order. However, in the above model, a supersolid state is stabilized even at the…
We study the Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of on-site disorder in the canonical ensemble and conclude that the local density of the Bose glass phase behaves differently at incommensurate filling than it does at commensurate one. Scaling of the superfluid density at incommensurate filling of $ρ=1.1$ and on-site interaction $U=80t$ predicts a superfluid-Bose glass transition at disorder strength of $Δ_c \approx 30t$. At this filling the local density distribution shows skew behavior with increasing disorder strength. Multifractal analysis also suggests a multifractal behavior resembling tha…
The Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian describes the competition between superfluidity and Mott insulating behavior at zero temperature and commensurate filling as the strength of the on-site repulsion is varied. Gapped insulating phases also occur at non-integer densities as a consequence of longer ranged repulsive interactions. In this paper we explore the formation of gapped phases in coupled chains due instead to anisotropies $t_x \neq t_y$ in the bosonic hopping, extending the work of Crepin {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B 84, 054517 (2011)] on two coupled chains, where a gap was shown to occur at half …
We present a quantum Monte Carlo study of the "quantum glass" phase of the 2D Bose-Hubbard model with random potentials at filling $ρ=1$. In the narrow region between the Mott and superfluid phases the compressibility has the form $κ\sim {\rm exp}(-b/T^α)+c$ with $α<1$ and $c$ vanishing or very small. Thus, at $T=0$ the system is either incompressible (a Mott glass) or nearly incompressible (a Mott-glass-like anomalous Bose glass). At stronger disorder, where a glass reappears from the superfluid, we find a conventional highly compressible Bose glass. On a path connecting these states, away fr…
We analyse the distinction between the three different ground states presented by a system of spinless bosons with short-range interactions submitted to a random potential using the disordered Bose-Hubbard model. The criteria for identifying the superfluid, the Mott-insulator, and the Bose-glass phases at finite temperatures are discussed for small values of the kinetic energy associated with the tunnelling of particles between potential wells. Field theoretical considerations are applied in order to construct a diagrammatic hopping expansion to the finite-temperature Green's function. By perf…
We study the zero temperature phase diagram of the disordered spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model in a 2-dimensional square lattice. To this aim, we use a mean field Gutzwiller ansatz and a probabilistic mean field perturbation theory. The spin interaction induces two different regimes corresponding to a ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order. In the ferromagnetic case, the introduction of disorder reproduces analogous features of the disordered scalar Bose-Hubbard model, consisting in the formation of a Bose glass phase between Mott insulator lobes. In the antiferromagnetic regime the phase diagram …
We investigate the phase diagram of the one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with mass imbalance. Using DMRG, we show that this model has a "triplet" paired phase (dubbed $π\mathrm{SG}$) at generic fillings, consistent with previous theoretical analysis. We study the topological aspect of $π\mathrm{SG}$ phase, determining long-range string orders and the filling anomaly which refers to the relation among the single particle gap, inversion symmetry, and filling imbalance for open chains. We also find, using DMRG, that at $1/3$ filling, commensurate effects lead to two additional phases: a cr…
The disordered Bose-Hubbard model in two dimensions at non-integer filling admits a superfluid to Bose-glass transition at weak disorder. Less understood are the properties of this system at strong disorder and energy densities corresponding to excited states. In this work we study the Bose-glass transition of the ground state and the related finite energy localization transition, the mobility edge of the quasiparticle spectrum, a critical energy separating extended from localized quasiparticle excitations. To study these the fluctuation operator expansion is used. The level spacing statistics…
We study disordered interacting bosons described by the Bose-Hubbard model with Gaussian-distributed random tunneling amplitudes. It is shown that the off-diagonal disorder induces a spin-glass-like ground state, characterized by randomly frozen quantum-mechanical U(1) phases of bosons. To access criticality, we employ the "$n$-replica trick", as in the spin-glass theory, and the Trotter-Suzuki method for decomposition of the statistical density operator, along with numerical calculations. The interplay between disorder, quantum and thermal fluctuations leads to phase diagrams exhibiting a gla…
There have been considerable research efforts devoted to quantum simulations of Fermi-Hubbard model with ultracold atoms loaded in optical lattices. In such experiments, the antiferromagnetically ordered quantum state has been achieved at half filling in recent years. The atomic lattice away from half filling is expected to host d-wave superconductivity, but its low temperature phases have not been reached. In a recent work, we proposed an approach of incommensurate quantum adiabatic doping, using quantum adiabatic evolution of an incommensurate lattice for preparation of the highly correlated…
In quantum many-body system, dimensionality plays a critical role on type of the quantum phase transition. In order to study the quantum system during dimensional crossover, we studied the Bose-Hubbard model on cubic lattice with anisotropic hopping by using the high order symbolic strong coupling expansion method. The analytic series expanded boundaries between the Mott-insulator and superfluid phase up to eighth order are calculated. The critical exponents are extracted by Padé re-summation method, which clearly shows the dimensional crossover behavior. Meanwhile, the critical points at comm…
We compute the absorption spectrum of strongly repulsive one-dimensional bosons in a disordered or quasi-periodic optical lattice. At commensurate filling, the particle-hole resonances of the Mott insulator are broadened as the disorder strength is increased. In the non-commensurate case, mapping the problem to the Anderson model allows us to study the Bose-glass phase. Surprisingly we find that a perturbative treatment in both cases, weak and strong disorder, gives a good description at all frequencies. In particular we find that the infrared absorption rate in the thermodynamic limit is quad…
We study the mechanism of formation of Bose glass (BG) phases in the spin-1 Bose Hubbard model when diagonal disorder is introduced. To this aim, we analyze first the phase diagram in the zero-hopping limit, there disorder induces superposition between Mott insulator (MI) phases with different filling numbers. Then BG appears as a compressible but still insulating phase. The phase diagram for finite hopping is also calculated with the Gutzwiller approximation. The bosons' spin degree of freedom introduces another scattering channel in the two-body interaction modifying the stability of MI regi…
We study the dynamics of a two-level impurity embedded in a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at zero temperature from an open quantum system perspective. Results for the decoherence across the whole phase diagram are presented, with a focus on the critical region close to the transition between superfluid and Mott insulator. In particular, we show how the decoherence and the deviation from a Markovian behaviour are sensitive to whether the transition is crossed at commensurate or incommensurate densities. The role of the spectrum of the Bose-Hubbard environment and its non-Gaussian statistic…
We probe the transition between superfluid and Bose glass phases using quantum quenches of disorder in an ultracold atomic lattice gas that realizes the disordered Bose-Hubbard model. Measurements of excitations generated by the quench exhibit threshold behavior in the disorder strength indicative of a phase transition. Ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations confirm that the appearance of excitations coincides with the equilibrium superfluid--Bose-glass phase boundary at different lattice potential depths. By varying the quench time, we demonstrate the disappearance of an adiabatic timescal…
We study the phase transition from Mott insulator (MI) to Bose glass (BG) of a disordered Bose-Hubbard model within the framework of Ginzburg-Landau effective action approach. By treating MI as unperturbed ground state and performing a systematic expansion with respect to tunneling matrix element, we extend such a field-theoretic method into the disordered lattice Bose systems. To the lowest order, a second order phase transition is confirmed to happen here and the corresponding phase boundary equation coincides with the previous mean-field approximation result. Keeping all the terms second or…
An exciting development in the field of correlated systems is the possibility of realizing two-dimensional (2D) phases of quantum matter. For a systems of bosons, an example of strong correlations manifesting themselves in a 2D environment is provided by helium adsorbed on graphene. We construct the effective Bose-Hubbard model for this system which involves hard-core bosons $(U\approx\infty)$, repulsive nearest-neighbor $(V>0)$ and small attractive $(V'<0)$ next-nearest neighbor interactions. The mapping onto the Bose-Hubbard model is accomplished by a variety of many-body techniques which ta…
We show that the effective spin-spin interaction between three-level atoms confined in a multimode optical cavity is long-ranged and sign-changing, like the RKKY interaction; therefore, ensembles of such atoms subject to frozen-in positional randomness can realize spin systems having disordered and frustrated interactions. We argue that, whenever the atoms couple to sufficiently many cavity modes, the cavity-mediated interactions give rise to a spin glass. In addition, we show that the quantum dynamics of cavity-confined spin systems is that of a Bose-Hubbard model with strongly disordered hop…
Observations of center of mass dynamics offer a straightforward method to identify strongly interacting quantum phases of atoms placed in optical lattices. We theoretically study the dynamics of states derived from the disordered Bose-Hubbard model in a trapping potential. We find that the edge states in the trap allow center of mass motion even with insulating states in the center. We identify short and long-time scale mechanisms for edge state transport in insulating phases. We also argue that the center of mass velocity can aid in identifying a Bose-glass phase. Our zero temperature results…
We study the ground state of the disordered Bose-Hubbard model for spin-1 particles by means of the stochastic mean-field theory. This approach enables the determination of the probability distributions of various physical quantities, such as the superfluid order parameter, the average site occupation number, the standard deviation of the occupation per site and the square of the spin operator per site. We show how a stochastic method, previously used in the study of localization, can be flexibly used to solve the relevant equations with great accuracy. We have determined the phase diagram, wh…
We study the many-body ground states of two-component hardcore bosons in topological triangular lattice models. Utilizing exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we demonstrate that at commensurate two-thirds filling per lattice site, two-component bosonic integer quantum hall (BIQH) effect emerges with the associated $\mathbf{K}=\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1\\ 1 & 0\\ \end{pmatrix}$ matrix under strong intercomponent Hubbard repulsion. The topological nature is further elucidated by (i) a unique ground state degeneracy with a robust spectrum gap, (ii) a quantized …
We numerically examine slow and hierarchical relaxation dynamics of interacting bosons described by a tilted two-band Bose-Hubbard model. The system is found to exhibit signatures of quantum chaos within the spectrum and the validity of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for relevant physical observables is demonstrated for certain parameter regimes. Using the truncated Wigner representation in the semiclassical limit of the system, dynamics of relevant observables reveal hierarchical relaxation and the appearance of prethermalized states is studied from the perspective of statistics of …
We investigate the properties of the superfluid phase in the three-dimensional disordered Bose-Hubbard model using Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. The phase diagram is generated using Gaussian disorder on the on-site potential. Comparisons with box and speckle disorder show qualitative similarities leading to the re-entrant behavior of the superfluid. Quantitative differences that arise are controlled by the specific shape of the disorder. Statistics pertaining to disorder distributions are studied for a range of interaction strengths and system sizes, where strong finite-size effects are obs…
The Bose glass (BG) phase is the Griffiths region of the disordered Bose Hubbard model (BHM), characterized by finite, quasi-superfluid clusters within a Mott insulating background. We propose to utilize this characterization to identify the complete zero-temperature phase diagram of the disordered BHM in $d\ge2$ dimensions by analyzing the geometric properties of what we call superfluid (SF) clusters, which are defined to be clusters of sites with non-integer expectation values for the local boson occupation number. The Mott insulator (MI) phase then is the region in the phase diagram where n…
We study the entanglement entropy and entanglement spectrum of the paradigmatic Bose-Hubbard model, describing strongly correlated bosons on a lattice. The use of a controlled approximation - the slave-boson approach - allows us to study entanglement in all regimes of the model (and, most importantly, across its superfluid/Mott-insulator transition) at a minimal cost. We find that the area-law scaling of entanglement -- verified in all the phases -- exhibits a sharp singularity at the transition. The singularity is greatly enhanced when the transition is crossed at fixed, integer filling, due …
