We investigate the ground state phases of an extended Bose-Hubbard ladder of unit filling via the density-matrix-renormalization-group method and, in particular, the effect of rung-hoppings. In contrast to a single-chain, a commensurate supersolid emerges, and based on the Luttinger parameter, we classify them into two types. The latter leads to a reentrant gapless behavior as the onsite interaction is increased while keeping all other parameters intact. A reentrant gapped transition is also found as a function of nearest-neighbor interactions. Further, we show that the string order characterizing the Haldane phase vanishes for a finite inter-chain hopping amplitude, however small it is. Finally, we propose two experimental platforms to observe our findings, using either dipolar atoms or polar molecules and Rydberg admixed atoms.
Using an unbiased quantum Monte Carlo method, we obtain convincing evidence of the existence of a checkerboard supersolid at a {\it commensurate} filling factor 1/2 (commensurate supersolid) in the soft-core Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor repulsions on a cubic lattice. In conventional cases, supersolids are realized at incommensurate filling factors by a doped-defect-condensation mechanism, where particles (holes) doped into a perfect crystal act as interstitials (vacancies) and delocalize in the crystal order. However, in the above model, a supersolid state is stabilized even at the…
We study the emergence of supersolid Devil's staircases of spin-orbit coupled bosons loaded in optical lattices. We consider two- and three-dimensional systems of pseudo-spin-$1/2$ bosons interacting via local spin-dependent interactions. These interactions together with spin-orbit coupling produce length scales that are commensurate to the lattice spacing. This commensurability leads to Devil's staircases of supersolids, with fractal Hausdorff dimensions, which arise from uniform superfluid phases. We show that umklapp processes are essential for the existence of commensurate supersolids, and…
We report our findings on quantum phase transitions in cold bosonic atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice using the finite size density matrix renormalization group method in the framework of the extended Bose-Hubbard model. We consider wide ranges of values for the filling factors and the nearest neighbor interactions. At commensurate fillings, we obtain two different types of charge density wave phases and a Mott insulator phase. However, departure from commensurate fillings yield the exotic supersolid phase where both the crystalline and the superfluid orders coexist. In addition, we o…
The Bose-Hubbard model is well-defined description of a Bose solid which may be realistic for cold atoms in a periodic optical lattice. We show that contrary to accepted theories it can never have as a ground state a perfect Mott insulator solid and that it has a low-energy spectrum of vortex-like phase fluctuations. Whether the ground state is necessarily commensurate remains an open question.
We study ground-state properties in a hard-core Bose-Hubbard model on a layered triangular lattice. Combining cluster mean-field theory with the density matrix renormalization group method, we discuss the effect of the interlayer coupling on the supersolid states realized in a single layered model. By examining the distributions for the particle density and superfluid order parameter, the rich phase diagram of the system is obtained. We find that the supersolid states are widely stabilized at a commensurate filling, in contrast to the case of the single layered model. The nature of the superso…
It is well known that the supersolid form of matter can arise in a single species of cold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice due to long range interactions. We present a scenario where a supersolid is induced in one of the components of a mixture of two species bosonic atoms where there is no long range interactions. We study a system of normal and hardcore boson mixture with only the former possessing long range interactions. We consider three cases: the first where the total density is commensurate and the other two where they are incommensurate . By suitable choices of the densities and th…
We study the ground state properties of a frustrated two-species mixture of hard-core bosons on a triangular lattice, as a function of tunable amplitudes for tunnelling and interactions. By combining three different methods, a self-consistent cluster mean-field, exact diagonalizations and effective theories, we unravel a very rich and complex phase diagram. More specifically, we discuss the existence of three original mixture supersolids: (i) a commensurate with frozen densities and supersolidity in spin degrees of freedom, in a regime of strong interspecies interactions; and (ii) when this in…
We revisited the phase diagram of the second layer of 4He on top of graphite using quantum Monte Carlo methods. Our aim was to explore the existence of the novel phases suggested recently in experimental works, and determine their properties and stability limits. We found evidence of a superfluid quantum phase with hexatic correlations, induced by the corrugation of the first Helium layer, and a quasi-two-dimensional supersolid corresponding to a 7/12 registered phase. The 4/7 commensurate solid was found to be unstable, while the triangular incommensurate crystals, stable at large densities, …
We investigate quantum phase transitions occurring in a system of strongly interacting ultracold bosons in a 1D optical lattice. After discussing the commensurate-incommensurate transition, we focus on the phases appearing at incommensurate filling. We find a rich phase diagram, with superfluid, supersolid and solid (kink-lattice) phases. Supersolids generally appear in theoretical studies of systems with long-range interactions; our results break this paradigm and show that they may also emerge in models including only short-range (contact) interactions, provided that quantum fluctuations are…
We analyze the ground-state entanglement entropy of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with infinite-range interactions. This model describes the low-energy dynamics of ultracold bosons tightly bound to an optical lattice and dispersively coupled to a cavity mode. The competition between onsite repulsion and global cavity-induced interactions leads to a rich phase diagram, which exhibits superfluid, supersolid, and insulating (Mott and checkerboard) phases. We use a slave-boson treatment of harmonic quantum fluctuations around the mean-field solution and calculate the entanglement entropy across …
Polar molecules in geometrically frustrated lattices may result in a very rich landscape of quantum phases, due to the non-trivial interplay between frustration, and two- and possibly three-body inter-site interactions. In this paper, we illustrate this intriguing physics for the case of hard-core polar molecules in frustrated triangular ladders. Whereas commensurate lattice fillings result in gapped phases with bond-order and/or density-wave order, at incommensurate fillings we find chiral-, two-component-, and pair-superfluids. We show as well that, remarkably, polar molecules in frustrated …
We consider a single-component gas of dipolar bosons confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice, where the dipoles are aligned such that the long-ranged dipolar interactions are maximally repulsive. In the limit of zero inter-site hopping and sufficiently large on-site interaction, the phase diagram is a complete devil's staircase for filling fractions between 0 and 1: every commensurate state at a rational filling is stable over a finite interval in chemical potential, and for every chemical potential the system is in a gapped commensurate phase. We perturb away from this limit in two expe…
We derive effective Hamiltonians for lattice bosons with strong geometrical frustration of the kinetic energy by projecting the interactions on the flat lowest Bloch band. Specifically, we consider the Bose Hubbard model on the one dimensional sawtooth lattice and the two dimensional kagome lattice. Starting from a strictly local interaction the projection gives rise to effective long-range terms stabilizing a supersolid phase at densities above nu_c=1/9 of the kagome lattice. In the sawtooth lattice on the other hand we show that the solid order, which exists at the magic filling nu_c=1/4, is…
By means of an accurate path-integral Monte Carlo we investigate a two-dimensional ensemble of particles interacting via a Lifshitz-Petrich-Gaussian potential. In particular, analysing structures described by a commensurate ratio between the two wave numbers that mark the pattern, the Lifshitz-Petrich-Gaussian boson model may display a stable and well-defined stripe phase lacking any global phase coherence but featuring a superfluid signal along the stripe direction only. Upon increasing quantum fluctuations and quantum-mechanical exchange of bosons, the double-degeneration of the negative min…
Ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices self-organize into a variety of structural and quantum phases when placed into a single-mode cavity and pumped by a laser. Cavity optomechanical effects induce an atom density modulation at the cavity-mode wave length that competes with the optical lattice arrangement. Simultaneously short-range interactions via particle hopping promote superfluid order, such that a variety of structural and quantum coherent phases can occur. We analyze the emerging phase diagram in two dimensions by means of an extended Bose-Hubbard model using a local mean field ap…
We study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model with contact ($U$) and near neighbor ($V$) interactions focusing on the gapped Haldane insulating (HI) phase which is characterized by an exotic nonlocal order parameter. The parameter regime ($U$, $V$ and $μ$) where this phase exists and how it competes with other phases such as the supersolid (SS) phase, is incompletely understood. We use the Stochastic Green Function quantum Monte Carlo algorithm as well as the density matrix renormalization group to map out the phase diagram. Our main conclusions are that the HI exists…
