We consider, in the continuous time version, $γ$ independent random walks on $\mathbb{Z_+}$ in random environment in the Sinai's regime. Let $T_\gam$ be the first meeting time of one pair of the $γ$ random walks starting at different positions. We first show that the tail of the quenched distribution of $T_γ$, after a suitable rescaling, converges in probability, to some functional of the Brownian motion. Then we compute the law of this functional. Eventually, we obtain results about the moments of this meeting time. Being $\Eo$ the quenched expectation, we show that, for almost all environments $ω$, $\Eo[T_γ^{c}]$ is finite for $c<γ(γ-1)/2$ and infinite for $c>γ(γ-1)/2$.
This article rigorously analyzes the meeting time between pursuers and evaders performing random walks on digraphs. There exist several bounds on the expected meeting time between random walkers on graphs in the literature, however, closed-form expressions are limited in scope. By utilizing the notion that multiple random walks on a common graph can be understood as a single random walk on the Kronecker product graph, we are able to provide the first analytic expression for the meeting time in terms of the transition matrices of the random walkers when modeled by either discrete-time Markov ch…
We prove new results on lazy random walks on finite graphs. To start, we obtain new estimates on return probabilities $P^t(x,x)$ and the maximum expected hitting time $t_{\rm hit}$, both in terms of the relaxation time. We also prove a discrete-time version of the first-named author's ``Meeting time lemma"~ that bounds the probability of random walk hitting a deterministic trajectory in terms of hitting times of static vertices. The meeting time result is then used to bound the expected full coalescence time of multiple random walks over a graph. This last theorem is a discrete-time version of…
We provide an analysis of the expected meeting time of two independent random walks on a regular graph. For 1-D circle and 2-D torus graphs, we show that the expected meeting time can be expressed as the sum of the inverse of non-zero eigenvalues of a suitably defined Laplacian matrix. We also conjecture based on empirical evidence that this result holds more generally for simple random walks on arbitrary regular graphs. Further, we show that the expected meeting time for the 1-D circle of size $N$ is $Θ(N^2)$, and for a 2-D $N \times N$ torus it is $Θ(N^2 log N)$.
This is the story of the encounter between two worlds: the world of random walks and the world of Variable Length Markov Chains (VLMC). The meeting point turns around the semi-Markov property of underlying processes.
We consider two independent stationary random walks on large random regular graphs of degree $k\geq 3$ with $N$ vertices. On these graphs, the exponential approximations of the meeting times are known to follow from existing methods and form a basis for the voter model's diffusion approximations. The main result of this note improves the exponential approximations to an explicit form such that the first moments are asymptotically equivalent to $N(k-1)/[2(k-2)]$.
We study distributions of meeting times for finite symmetric Markov chains. For Markov kernels defined on large state spaces which satisfy certain weak inhomogeneity in return probabilities of points up to large numbers of steps, we obtain approximation, with explicit error bounds, of the Laplace transforms of some meeting times (without scaling) by ratios of Green functions closely related to hitting times of points. In studying this approximation, we identify some key matrix power series in Markov kernels weighted with solutions to a discrete transport-like equation with explicit coefficient…
The main results in this paper are about the full coalescence time $\mathsf{C}$ of a system of coalescing random walks over a finite graph $G$. Letting $\mathsf{m}(G)$ denote the mean meeting time of two such walkers, we give sufficient conditions under which $\mathbf{E}[\mathsf{C}]\approx 2\mathsf{m}(G)$ and $\mathsf{C}/\mathsf{m}(G)$ has approximately the same law as in the "mean field" setting of a large complete graph. One of our theorems is that mean field behavior occurs over all vertex-transitive graphs whose mixing times are much smaller than $\mathsf{m}(G)$; this nearly solves an open…
We consider d independent walkers on Z, m of them performing simple symmetric random walk and r = d -- m of them performing recurrent RWRE (Sinai walk), in I independent random environments. We show that the product is recurrent, almost surely, if and only if m $\le$ 1 or m = d = 2. In the transient case with r $\ge$ 1, we prove that the walkers meet infinitely often, almost surely, if and only if m = 2 and r $\ge$ I = 1. In particular, while I does not have an influence for the recurrence or transience, it does play a role for the probability to have infinitely many meetings. To obtain these …
We consider a branching random walk in a random space-time environment of disasters where each particle is killed when meeting a disaster. This extends the model of the "random walk in a disastrous random environment" introduced by [15]. We obtain a criterion for positive survival probability, see Theorem 1. The proofs for the subcritical and the supercritical cases follow standard arguments, which involve moment methods and a comparison with an embedded branching process with i.i.d. offspring distributions. The proof of almost sure extinction in the critical case is more difficult and uses th…
We consider the backbone of the infinite cluster generated by supercritical oriented site percolation in dimension 1 +1. A directed random walk on this backbone can be seen as an "ancestral line" of an individual sampled in the stationary discrete-time contact process. Such ancestral lineages were investigated in [BCDG13] where a central limit theorem for a single walker was proved. Here, we consider infinitely many coalescing walkers on the same backbone starting at each space-time point. We show that, after diffusive rescaling, the collection of paths converges in distribution to the Brownia…
We consider nonelementary random walks on general hyperbolic spaces. Without any moment condition on the walk, we show that it escapes linearly to infinity, with exponential error bounds. We even get such exponential bounds up to the rate of escape of the walk. Our proof relies on an inductive decomposition of the walk, recording times at which it could go to infinity in several independent directions, and using these times to control further backtracking.
We consider the elephant random walk with general step distribution. We calculate the first four moments of the limiting distribution of the position rescaled by $n^α$ in the superdiffusive regime where $α$ is the memory parameter. This extends the results obtained by Bercu.
The one-dimensional elephant random walk is a typical model of discrete-time random walk with step-reinforcement, and is introduced by Schütz and Trimper (2004). It has a parameter $α\in (-1,1)$: The case $α=0$ corresponds to the simple symmetric random walk, and when $α>0$ (resp. $α<0$), the mean displacement of the walker at time $n$ grows (resp. vanishes) like $n^α$. The walk admits a phase transition at $α=1/2$ from the diffusive behavior to the superdiffusive behavior. In this paper, we study the rate of the moment convergence in the central limit theorem for the position of the walker wh…
A small world is obtained from the $d$-dimensional torus of size 2L adding randomly chosen connections between sites, in a way such that each site has exactly one random neighbour in addition to its deterministic neighbours. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the meeting time $T_L$ of two random walks moving on this small world and compare it with the result on the torus. On the torus, in order to have convergence, we have to rescale $T_L$ by a factor $C_1L^2$ if $d=1$, by $C_2L^2\log L$ if $d=2$ and $C_dL^d$ if $d\ge3$. We prove that on the small world the rescaling factor is $C^\prime_dL^d…
Let $G$ be a finitely generated group of polynomial volume growth equipped with a word-length $|\cdot|$. The goal of this paper is to develop techniques to study the behavior of random walks driven by symmetric measures $μ$ such that, for any $ε>0$, $\sum|\cdot|^εμ=\infty$. In particular, we provide a sharp lower bound for the return probability in the case when $μ$ has a finite weak-logarithmic moment.
For a zero-delayed random walk on the real line, let $τ(x)$, $N(x)$ and $ρ(x)$ denote the first passage time into the interval $(x,\infty)$, the number of visits to the interval $(-\infty,x]$ and the last exit time from $(-\infty,x]$, respectively. In the present paper, we provide ultimate criteria for the finiteness of exponential moments of these quantities. Moreover, whenever these moments are finite, we derive their asymptotic behaviour, as $x \to \infty$.
Let $(ξ_1,η_1),(ξ_2,η_2),...$ be a sequence of i.i.d.\ copies of a random vector $(ξ,η)$ taking values in $\R^2$, and let $S_n := ξ_1+...+ξ_n$. The sequence $(S_{n-1} + η_n)_{n \geq 1}$ is then called perturbed random walk. We study random quantities defined in terms of the perturbed random walk: $τ(x)$, the first time the perturbed random walk exits the interval $(-\infty,x]$, $N(x)$, the number of visits to the interval $(-\infty,x]$, and $ρ(x)$, the last time the perturbed random walk visits the interval $(-\infty,x]$. We provide criteria for the a.s.\ finiteness and for the finiteness of e…
Let $(X_t, t \geq 0)$ be an $α$-stable random walk with values in $\Z^d$. Let $l_t(x) = \int_0^t δ_x(X_s) ds$ be its local time. For $p>1$, not necessarily integer, $I_t = \sum_x l_t^p(x)$ is the so-called $p$-fold self- intersection local time of the random walk. When $p(d -α) < d$, we derive precise logarithmic asymptotics of the probability $P(I_t \geq r_t)$ for all scales $r_t \gg \E(I_t)$. Our result extends previous works by Chen, Li and Rosen 2005, Becker and König 2010, and Laurent 2012.
Infinite sums of i.i.d. random variables discounted by a multiplicative random walk are called perpetuities and have been studied by many authors. The present paper provides a log-type moment result for such random variables under minimal conditions which is then utilized for the study of related moments of a.s. limits of certain martingales associated with the supercritical branching random walk. The connection, first observed by the second author in [Iksanov, A.M. (2004). Elementary fixed points of the BRW smoothing transforms with infinite number of summands. Stoch. Proc. Appl. 114, 27-50.]…
Consider an arbitrary transient random walk on $\Z^d$ with $d\in\N$. Pick $α\in[0,\infty)$ and let $L_n(α)$ be the spatial sum of the $α$-th power of the $n$-step local times of the walk. Hence, $L_n(0)$ is the range, $L_n(1)=n+1$, and for integers $α$, $L_n(α)$ is the number of the $α$-fold self-intersections of the walk. We prove a strong law of large numbers for $L_n(α)$ as $n\to\infty$. Furthermore, we identify the asymptotic law of the local time in a random site uniformly distributed over the range. These results complement and contrast analogous results for recurrent walks in two dimens…
We study a continuous-time branching random walk on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, $d\in \mathbb{N}$, with a single source of branching, that is the lattice point where the birth and death of particles can occur. The random walk is assumed to be homogeneous, symmetric and irreducible but, in contrast to previous investigations, the random walk transition intensities $a(x,y)$ decrease as $|y-x|^{-(d+α)}$ for $|y-x|\to \infty$, where $α\in(0,2)$, that leads to an infinite variance of the random walk jumps. The~mechanism of the birth and death of particles at the source is governed by a continuous…
Let $A_n= \varepsilon_n \cdots \varepsilon_1$, where $(\varepsilon_n)_{n \geq 1}$ is a sequence of independent random matrices taking values in $ GL_d(\mathbb R)$, $d \geq 2$, with common distribution $μ$. In this paper, under standard assumptions on $μ$ (strong irreducibility and proximality), we prove Berry-Esseen type theorems for $\log ( \Vert A_n \Vert)$ when $μ$ has a polynomial moment. More precisely, we get the rate $((\log n) / n)^{q/2-1}$ when $μ$ has a moment of order $q \in ]2,3]$ and the rate $1/ \sqrt{n} $ when $μ$ has a moment of order $4$, which significantly improves earlier r…
In a recent paper of Eichelsbacher and Koenig (2008) the model of ordered random walks has been considered. There it has been shown that, under certain moment conditions, one can construct a k-dimensional random walk conditioned to stay in a strict order at all times. Moreover, they have shown that the rescaled random walk converges to the Dyson Brownian motion. In the present paper we find the optimal moment assumptions for the construction of the conditional random walk and generalise the limit theorem for this conditional process.
Using martingale methods, we obtain some upper bounds for large and moderate deviations of products of independent and identically distributed elements of GL d (R). We investigate all the possible moment conditions, from super-exponential moments to weak moments of order p \textgreater{} 1, to get a complete picture of the situation. We also prove a moderate deviation principle under an appropriate tail condition.
We derive a functional central limit theorem for the excursion of a random walk conditioned on sweeping a prescribed geometric area. We assume that the increments of the random walk are integer-valued, centered, with a third moment equal to zero and a finite fourth moment. This result complements the work of \citep{DKW13} where local central limit theorems are provided for the geometric area of the excursion of a symmetric random walk with finite second moments. Our result turns out to be a key tool to derive the scaling limit of the \emph{Interacting Partially-Directed Self-Avoiding Walk} at …
We consider Pólya urns with infinitely many colours that are of a random walk type, in two related version. We show that the colour distribution a.s., after rescaling, converges to a normal distribution, assuming only second moments on the offset distribution. This improves results by Bandyopadhyay and Thacker (2014--2017; convergence in probability), and Mailler and Marckert (2017; a.s. convergence assuming exponential moment).
Network epidemics is a ubiquitous model that can represent different phenomena and finds applications in various domains. Among its various characteristics, a fundamental question concerns the time when an epidemic stops propagating. We investigate this characteristic on a SIS epidemic induced by agents that move according to independent continuous time random walks on a finite graph: Agents can either be infected (I) or susceptible (S), and infection occurs when two agents with different epidemic states meet in a node. After a random recovery time, an infected agent returns to state S and can…
Subcritical catalytic branching random walk on d-dimensional lattice is studied. New theorems concerning the asymptotic behavior of distributions of local particles numbers are established. To prove the results different approaches are used including the connection between fractional moments of random variables and fractional derivatives of their Laplace transforms. In the previous papers on this subject only supercritical and critical regimes were investigated assuming finiteness of the first moment of offspring number and finiteness of the variance of offspring number, respectively. In the p…
We consider the long-time behaviour of a branching random walk in random environment on the lattice $\Z^d$. The migration of particles proceeds according to simple random walk in continuous time, while the medium is given as a random potential of spatially dependent killing/branching rates. The main objects of our interest are the annealed moments $< m_n^p > $, i.e., the $p$-th moments over the medium of the $n$-th moment over the migration and killing/branching, of the local and global population sizes. For $n=1$, this is well-understood \cite{GM98}, as $m_1$ is closely connected with the par…
In this paper we continue our study of a multidimensional random walk with zero mean and finite variance killed on leaving a cone. We suggest a new approach that allows one to construct a positive harmonic function in Lipschitz cones under minimal moment conditions. This approach allows one also to obtain more accurate information about the behaviour of the harmonic function not far from the boundary of the cone. We also prove limit theorems under new moment conditions.
Chen [Ann. Appl. Probab. {\bf 11} (2001), 1242--1262] derived exact convergence rates in a central limit theorem and a local limit theorem for a supercritical branching Wiener process. We extend Chen's results to a branching random walk under weaker moment conditions. For the branching Wiener process, our results sharpen Chen's by relaxing the second moment condition used by Chen to a moment condition of the form $ \E X (\ln^+X )^{1+λ}< \infty$. In the rate functions that we find for a branching random walk, we figure out some new terms which didn't appear in Chen's work. The results are establi…
Fix $p>1$, not necessarily integer, with $p(d-2)<d$. We study the $p$-fold self-intersection local time of a simple random walk on the lattice $\Z^d$ up to time $t$. This is the $p$-norm of the vector of the walker's local times, $\ell_t$. We derive precise logarithmic asymptotics of the expectation of $\exp\{θ_t \|\ell_t\|_p\}$ for scales $θ_t>0$ that are bounded from above, possibly tending to zero. The speed is identified in terms of mixed powers of $t$ and $θ_t$, and the precise rate is characterized in terms of a variational formula, which is in close connection to the {\it Gagliardo-Nire…
We study a discrete time multitype branching random walk on a finite space with finite set of types. Particles follow a Markov chain on the spatial space whereas offspring distributions are given by a random field that is fixed throughout the evolution of the particles. Our main interest lies in the averaged (annealed) expectation of the population size, and its long-time asymptotics. We first derive, for fixed time, a formula for the expected population size with fixed offspring distributions, which is reminiscent of a Feynman-Kac formula. We choose Weibull-type distributions with parameter $…
We study once-reinforced random walk (ORRW) on $\mathbb Z$. For this model, we derive limit results on all moments of its range using Tauberian theory.
Let $η^*_n$ denote the maximum, at time $n$, of a nonlattice one-dimensional branching random walk $η_n$ possessing (enough) exponential moments. In a seminal paper, Aidekon demonstrated convergence of $η^*_n$ in law, after recentering, and gave a representation of the limit. We give here a shorter proof of this convergence by employing reasoning motivated by Bramson, Ding and Zeitouni. Instead of spine methods and a careful analysis of the renewal measure for killed random walks, our approach employs a modified version of the second moment method that may be of independent interest.
The primary purpose of this article is to prove a tightness of skew random walks. The tightness result implies, in particular, that the skew Brownian motion can be constructed as the scaling limit of such random walks. Our proof of tightness is based on a fourth-order moment method.
Consider a system of coalescing random walks where each individual performs random walk over a finite graph G, or (more generally) evolves according to some reversible Markov chain generator Q. Let C be the first time at which all walkers have coalesced into a single cluster. C is closely related to the consensus time of the voter model for this G or Q. We prove that the expected value of C is at most a constant multiple of the largest hitting time of an element in the state space. This solves a problem posed by Aldous and Fill and gives sharp bounds in many examples, including all vertex-tran…
Annealed functional CLT in the rough path topology is proved for the standard class of ballistic random walks in random environment. Moreover, the `area anomaly', i.e. a deterministic linear correction for the second level iterated integral of the rescaled path, is identified in terms of a stochastic area on a regeneration interval. The main theorem is formulated in more general settings, namely for any discrete process with uniformly bounded increments which admits a regeneration structure where the regeneration times have finite moments. Here the largest finite moment translates into the deg…
We study the decay of convolution powers of probability measures without second moment but satisfying some weaker finite moment condition. For any locally compact unimodular group G and any positive function $ρ:G \rightarrow [0,+\infty]$, we introduce a function $Φ_{G,ρ}$ which describes the fastest possible decay of $n \mapsto ϕ^{(2n)}(e)$ when ϕis a symmetric continuous probability density such that $\intρϕ$ is finite. We estimate $Φ_{G,ρ}$ for a variety of groups G and functions ρ. When ρis of the form $ρ=ρ\circ δ$ with $ρ:[0,+\infty) \rightarrow [0,+\infty)$, a fixed increasing function, a…

We consider random walks in random Dirichlet environment (RWDE) which is a special type of random walks in random environment where the exit probabilities at each site are i.i.d. Dirichlet random variables. On $\Z^d$, RWDE are parameterized by a $2d$-uplet of positive reals. We prove that for all values of the parameters, RWDE are transient in dimension $d\ge 3$. We also prove that the Green function has some finite moments and we characterize the finite moments. Our result is more general and applies for example to finitely generated symmetric transient Cayley graphs. In terms of reinforced r…
We consider the time evolution of a lattice branching random walk with local perturbations. Under certain conditions, we prove the Carleman type estimation for the moments of a particle subpopulation number and show the existence of a steady state.
Given a symmetric random walk in $Z^2$ with finite second moments, let $R_n$ be the range of the random walk up to time $n$. We study moderate deviations for $R_n -E R_n$ and $E R_n -R_n$. We also derive the corresponding laws of the iterated logarithm.
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for random walks in i.i.d. weakly elliptic random environments in the ballistic regime. Such theorems have been proved recently by Rassoul-Agha and Seppäläinen in [10] and Berger and Zeitouni in [2] under the assumption of large finite moments for the regeneration time. In this paper, with the extra $(T)_γ$ condition of Sznitman we reduce the moment condition to ${\Bbb E}(τ^2(\ln τ)^{1+m})<+\infty$ for $m>1+1/γ$, which allows the inclusion of new non-uniformly elliptic examples such as Dirichlet random environments.
We introduce a set of tools which simplify and streamline the proofs of limit theorems concerning near-critical particles in branching random walks under optimal assumptions. We exemplify our method by giving another proof of the Seneta-Heyde norming for the critical additive martingale, initially due to Aïdékon and Shi. The method involves in particular the replacement of certain second moment estimates by truncated first moment bounds, and the replacement of ballot-type theorems for random walks by estimates coming from an explicit expression for the potential kernel of random walks killed b…
We give rates of convergence in the Central Limit Theorem for the coefficients and the spectral radius of the left random walk on GLd(R), assuming the existence of an exponential or polynomial moment.
We study dynamic random conductance models on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ in which the environment evolves as a reversible Markov process that is stationary under space-time shifts. We prove under a second moment assumption that two conditionally independent random walks in the same environment collide infinitely often almost surely. These results apply in particular to random walks on dynamical percolation.
We consider a centered random walk with finite variance and investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the probability that the area under this walk remains positive up to a large time $n$. Assuming that the moment of order $2+δ$ is finite, we show that the exact asymptotics for this probability are $n^{-1/4}$. To show these asymptotics we develop a discrete potential theory for the integrated random walk.
