In this paper, the study of the global orbit pattern (gop) formed by all the periodic orbits of discrete dynamical systems on a finite set $X$ allows us to describe precisely the behaviour of such systems. We can predict by means of closed formulas, the number of gop of the set of all the function from $X$ to itself. We also explore, using the brute force of computers, some subsets of locally rigid functions on $X$, for which interesting patterns of periodic orbits are found.
Bautista and Morales proved the existence of periodic orbits in singular-hyperbolic attracting sets(*). In this paper, we extend their result to singular-hyperbolic Lyapunov stable sets. ((*)"Existence of periodic orbits for singular-hyperbolic sets", Moscow Mathematical Journal, 6 (2006), 265-297)
The purpose of this paper is to give some generalizations, in the context of Banach mani- folds, of Sussmann's results about the orbits of families of vector fields ([Su]). Essentially, we define the notion of "l1-orbits" for any family of vector fields on a Banach manifold, and we prove, under appropriate assumptions, that such an orbit is a weak Banach submanifold.
In these expository notes we focus on selected topics around the themes: Delone sets as models for quasicrystals, inflation symmetries and expansion constants, substitution Delone sets and tilings, and associated dynamical systems.
We approximate a chain recurrent dynamical system by periodic dynamical systems. This is similar to the well known Bohr theorem on approximation of almost periodic functions by periodic functions.
Furstenberg, using tools from topological dynamics, defined the notion of a central subset of positive integers, and proved a powerful combinatorial theorem about such sets. Using the algebraic structure of the Stone-Čech compactification, this combinatorial theorem has been generalized and extended to the Central Sets Theorem. The algebraic techniques also discovered many sets, which are not central, that satisfy the conclusion of the Central Sets Theorem. We call such sets C sets. Since C sets are defined combinatorially, it is natural to ask if this notion admits a dynamical characterizatio…
Let $X$ be a compact Hausdorff space, with uniformity $\mathscr{U}$, and let $f \colon X \to X$ be a continuous function. For $D \in \mathscr{U}$, a $D$-pseudo-orbit is a sequence $(x_i)$ for which $(f(x_i),x_{i+1}) \in D$ for all indices $i$. In this paper we show that pseudo-orbits trap $ω$-limit sets in a neighbourhood of prescribed accuracy after a uniform time period. A consequence of this is a generalisation of a result of Pilyugin et al: every system has the second weak shadowing property. By way of further applications we give a characterisation of minimal systems in terms of pseudo-or…
We establish a dynamical version of Kuratowski-Mycielski Theorem on the existence of "large" invariant dependent sets. We apply this result to the study of invariant chaotic sets in topological dynamical systems, simplify many known results on this topic and also obtain some new results.
Under the assumption of the gluing orbit property, equivalent conditions to having zero topological entropy are investigated. In particular, we show that a dynamical system has the gluing orbit property and zero topological entropy if and only if it is minimal and equicontinuous.
We systematically investigate examples of non-hyperbolic dynamical systems having irregular sets of full topological entropy and full Hausdorff dimension. The examples include some partially hyperbolic systems and geometric Lorenz flows. We also pose interesting questions for future research.
We study the problem of existence of orbits connecting stationary points for the nonlinear heat and strongly damped wave equations being at resonance at infinity. The main difficulty lies in the fact that the problems may have no solutions for general nonlinearity. To address this question we introduce geometrical assumptions for the nonlinear term and use them to prove index formulas expressing the Conley index of associated semiflows. We also prove that the geometrical assumptions are generalizations of the well known Landesman- Lazer and strong resonance conditions. Obtained index formulas …
We consider a homeomorphism on a totally disconnected, compact metric space and define a binary relation on the family of clopen subsets. We will show that the comparability of any clopen sets with respect to the relation is equivalent to the unique ergodicity of the homeomorphism.
For any $C^1$ diffeomorphism on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold that admits an ergodic measure with positive entropy, a lower bound of the Hausdorff dimension for the local stable and unstable sets is given in terms of the measure-theoretic entropy and the maximal Lyapunov exponent. The mainline of our approach to this result is under the settings of topological dynamical systems, which is also applicable to infinite dimensional $C^1$ dynamical systems.
In this article, we deal with several notions in dynamical systems. Firstly, we prove that both closure function and orbital function are idempotent on set-valued dynamical systems. And we show that the compact limit set of a connected set is also connected. Furthermore, we prove that the $Ω$-limit set of a compact set is quasi-attracting.
We consider a group $G$ acting on a local dendrite $X$ (in particular on a graph). We give a full characterization of minimal sets of $G$ by showing that any minimal set $M$ of $G$ (whenever $X$ is different from a dendrite) is either a finite orbit, or a Cantor set, or a circle. If $X$ is a graph different from a circle, such a minimal $M$ is a finite orbit. These results extend those of the authors for group actions on dendrites. On the other hand, we show that, for any group $G$ acting on a local dendrite $X$ different from a circle, the following properties are equivalent: (1) ($G, X$) is …
The modern qualitative theory of dynamical systems is thoroughly intertwined with the fairly young science of topology. Strange and even bizarre constructions of topology are found sooner or later in dynamics of discrete or continuous dynamical systems. In the present paper we show that the wild Fox-Artin arc naturally emerges in dynamics as an invariant manifold of a fixed point and as a heteroclinic intersection.
We describe a mathematical formalism and numerical algorithms for identifying and tracking slowly mixing objects in nonautonomous dynamical systems. In the autonomous setting, such objects are variously known as almost-invariant sets, metastable sets, persistent patterns, or strange eigenmodes, and have proved to be important in a variety of applications. In this current work, we explain how to extend existing autonomous approaches to the nonautonomous setting. We call the new time-dependent slowly mixing objects coherent sets as they represent regions of phase space that disperse very slowly …
It is known by the Conley's theorem that the chain recurrent set $CR(ϕ)$ of a deterministic flow $ϕ$ on a compact metric space is the complement of the union of sets $B(A)-A$, where $A$ varies over the collection of attractors and $B(A)$ is the basin of attraction of $A$. It has recently been shown that a similar decomposition result holds for random dynamical systems on noncompact separable complete metric spaces, but under a so-called \emph{absorbing condition}. In the present paper, the authors introduce a notion of random chain recurrent sets for random dynamical systems, and then prove th…
In this paper, we manage to apply Schmidt games to certain non-algebraic dynamical systems. More precisely, we show that the set of points with non-dense forward orbit under a $C^2$-Anosov diffeomorphism with conformality on unstable manifolds is a winning set for Schmidt games. It is also proved that for a $C^{1+θ}$-expanding endomorphism the set of points with non-dense forward orbit is a winning set for certain variants of Schmidt games.
For any primitive proper substitution σ, we give explicit constructions of countably many pairwise non-isomorphic substitution dynamical systems {(X_{ζ_n}, T_{ζ_n})}_{n=1}^{\infty} such that they all are (strong) orbit equivalent to (X_σ, T_σ). We show that the complexity of the substitution dynamical systems {(X_{ζ_n}, T_{ζ_n})} is essentially different that prevents them from being isomorphic. Given a primitive (not necessarily proper) substitution τ, we find a stationary simple properly ordered Bratteli diagram with the least possible number of vertices such that the corresponding Bratteli-…
In this paper, we completely solve the problem when a Cantor dynamical system $(X,f)$ can be embedded in $\mathbb{R}$ with vanishing derivative everywhere. For this purpose, we construct a refining sequence of marked clopen partitions of $X$ which is adapted to a dynamical system of this kind. It turns out that there is a huge class of such systems.
Bifurcation equations, non-degeneracy and transversality conditions are obtained for the fold, transcritical, pitchfork and flip bifurcations for periodic points of one dimensional implicitly defined discrete dynamical systems. The backward Euler method and the trapezoid method for numeric solutions of ordinary differential equations fall in the category of implicit dynamical systems. Examples of bifurcations are given for some implicit dynamical systems including bifurcations for the backward Euler method when the step size is changed.
In this text, we prove then that any minimal effective dynamical system on a Cantor set $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{N}}$ can be simulated by a minimal $\mathbb{Z}^3$-SFT, in a sense that we explicit here. This notion is a generalization of simulation by factor and sub-action defined by Hochman.
In this paper we consider Hausdorff dimension of the sets of Li-Yorke pairs for some chaotic dynamical systems including $A$-coupled expanding systems. We prove that Li-Yorke pairs of $A$- coupled-expanding system under some conditions have full hausdorff dimension on the invariant set. we generalize the result of [8] on the Hausdorff dimension of Li-Yorke pairs of dynamical systems topologically conjugate to the full shift and having a self-similar invariant set to the case of dynamical system conjugated to some kind of subshifts. And Hausdorff dimension of "chaotic invariant set" for some ki…
We investigate the relationship between the dynamical properties of minimal topological dynamical systems and the multiplicative combinatorial properties of return time sets arising from those systems. In particular, we prove that for a residual sets of points in any minimal system, the set of return times to any non-empty, open set contains arbitrarily long geometric progressions. Under the separate assumptions of total minimality and distality, we prove that return time sets have positive multiplicative upper Banach density along $\mathbb{N}$ and along multiplicative subsemigroups of $\mathb…
For a dynamical system we will construct various invariant sets starting from its conserved quantities. We will give conditions under which certain solutions of a nonlinear system are also solutions for a simpler dynamical system, for example when they are solutions for a linear dynamical system. We will apply these results to the example of Toda lattice.
The study of transport and mixing processes in dynamical systems is particularly important for the analysis of mathematical models of physical systems. Barriers to transport, which mitigate mixing, are currently the subject of intense study. In the autonomous setting, the use of transfer operators (Perron-Frobenius operators) to identify invariant and almost-invariant sets has been particularly successful. In the nonautonomous (time-dependent) setting, \emph{coherent sets}, a time-parameterised family of minimally dispersive sets, are a natural extension of almost-invariant sets. The present w…
In this article, we study the behaviour of discrete one-dimensional dynamical systems associated to functions on finite sets. We formalise the global orbit pattern formed by all the periodic orbits (gop) as the ordered set of periods when the initial value thumbs the finite set in the increasing order. We are able to predict, using closed formulas, the number of gop for the set $\mathcal{F}_N$ of all the functions on $X$. We also explore by computer experiments special subsets of $\mathcal{F}_N$ in which interesting patterns of gop are found.
Embedding techniques allow the approximations of finite dimensional attractors and manifolds of infinite dimensional dynamical systems via subdivision and continuation methods. These approximations give a topological one-to-one image of the original set. In order to additionally reveal their geometry we use diffusion mapst o find intrinsic coordinates. We illustrate our results on the unstable manifold of the one-dimensional Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation, as well as for the attractor of the Mackey-Glass delay differential equation.
We study generalized indicators of sensitivity to initial conditions and orbit complexity in topological dynamical systems. The orbit complexity is a measure of the asymptotic behavior of the information that is necessary to describe the orbit of a given point. The indicator generalizes in a certain sense, the Brudno's orbit complexity (which is strongly related to the entropy of the system). The initial condition sensitivity indicators consider the asymptotic behavior of the speed of divergence of nearby staring orbits. The indicators have non trivial values also in weakly chaotic dynamical s…
In this paper we provide examples of topological dynamical systems having either finite or countable scrambled sets. In particular we study conditions for the existence of Li-Yorke, asymptotic and distal pairs in constant--length substitution dynamical systems. Starting from a circle rotation we also construct a dynamical system having Li--Yorke pairs, none of which is recurrent.
In this paper, we consider local and uniform invariance preserving steplength thresholds on a set when a discretization method is applied to a linear or nonlinear dynamical system. For the forward or backward Euler method, the existence of local and uniform invariance preserving steplength thresholds is proved when the invariant sets are polyhedra, ellipsoids, or Lorenz cones. Further, we also quantify the steplength thresholds of the backward Euler methods on these sets for linear dynamical systems. Finally, we present our main results on the existence of uniform invariance preserving steplen…
We study the transport properties of nonautonomous chaotic dynamical systems over a finite time duration. We are particularly interested in those regions that remain coherent and relatively non-dispersive over finite periods of time, despite the chaotic nature of the system. We develop a novel probabilistic methodology based upon transfer operators that automatically detects maximally coherent sets. The approach is very simple to implement, requiring only singular vector computations of a matrix of transitions induced by the dynamics. We illustrate our new methodology on an idealized stratosph…
In this paper, we set up a general correspondence between the algebra properties of $\bN$ and the sets defined by dynamical properties. In particular, we obtain a dynamical characterization of C-sets, where C-sets are the sets satisfying the strong Central Sets Theorem. As an application, we show that Rado systems are solvable in C-sets.

It is shown how regular model sets can be characterized in terms of regularity properties of their associated dynamical systems. The proof proceeds in two steps. First, we characterize regular model sets in terms of a certain map $β$ and then relate the properties of $β$ to ones of the underlying dynamical system. As a by-product, we can show that regular model sets are, in a suitable sense, as close to periodic sets as possible among repetitive aperiodic sets.
We study non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing dynamical systems by using linear dynamical systems. These are systems consisting of a bounded linear operator acting on a separable complex Banach space X, which becomes a probability space when endowed with a non-degenerate Gaussian measure. We generalize some recent results of Bergelson, del Junco, Lemańczyk and Rosenblatt, and show in particular that sets \{n_k\} such that n_{k+1}/{n_k} tends to infinity, or such that n_{k} divides n_{k+1} for each k, are non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing linear dynamical systems. We also give examples, fo…
We prove that any divisible dynamical simplex is the set of invariant measures of some Toeplitz subshift. We apply our construction to prove that orbit equivalence of Toeplitz subshifts is Borel bireducible to the universal equivalence relation induced by a Borel action of a nonarchimedean Polish group.
We propose to compute approximations to general invariant sets in dynamical systems by minimizing the distance between an appropriately selected finite set of points and its image under the dynamics. We demonstrate, through computational experiments that this approach can successfully converge to approximations of (maximal) invariant sets of arbitrary topology, dimension and stability as, e.g., saddle type invariant sets with complicated dynamics. We further propose to extend this approach by adding a Lennard-Jones type potential term to the objective function which yields more evenly distribu…
Hindman and Leader first introduced the notion of Central sets near zero for dense subsemigroups of $((0,\infty),+)$ and proved a powerful combinatorial theorem about such sets. Using the algebraic structure of the Stone-$\breve{C}$ech compactification, Bayatmanesh and Tootkabani generalized and extended this combinatorial theorem to the central theorem near zero. Algebraically one can define quasi-central set near zero for dense subsemigroup of $((0,\infty),+)$, and they also satisfy the conclusion of central sets theorem near zero. In a dense subsemigroup of $((0,\infty),+)$, C-sets near zer…
