We study the deformations of the H equations, presented recently by Adler, Bobenko and Suris, which are naturally defined on a black-white lattice. For each one of these equations, two different three-leg forms are constructed, leading to two different discrete Toda type equations. Their multidimensional consistency leads to B{ä}cklund transformations relating different members of this class, as well as to Lax pairs. Their symmetry analysis is presented yielding infinite hierarchies of generalized symmetries.
In this article we present some integrability conditions for partial difference equations obtained using the formal symmetries approach. We apply them to find integrable partial difference equations contained in a class of equations obtained by the multiple scale analysis of the general multilinear dispersive difference equation defined on the square.
We study the symmetry and integrability of a modified Camassa-Holm Equation (MCH), with an arbitrary parameter $k,$ of the form $$u_{t}+k(u-u_{xx})^2u_{x}-u_{xxt}+(u^{2}-{u_{x}}^2)(u_{x}-u_{xxx})=0.$$ By using Lie point symmetries we reduce the order of the above equation and also we obtain interesting novel solutions for the reduced ordinary differential equations. Finally we apply the Painlevé Test to the resultant nonlinear ordinary differential equation.
We consider the partial difference equations of the Adler-Bobenko-Suris classification, which are characterized as multidimensionally consistent. The latter property leads naturally to the construction of auto-B{ä}cklund transformations and Lax pairs for all the equations in this class. Their symmetry analysis is presented and infinite hierarchies of generalized symmetries are explicitly constructed.
Integrability conditions for difference equations admitting a second order formal recursion operator are presented and the derivation of symmetries and canonical conservation laws is discussed. In the generic case, nonlocal conservation laws are also generated. A new integrable equation satisfying the second order integrability conditions is presented and its integrability is established by the construction of symmetries, conservation laws and a 3x3 Lax representation. Finally, the relation of the symmetries of this equation to a generalized Bogoyavlensky lattice and a new integrable lattice a…
In this work, we establish a connection between the extended Prelle-Singer procedure with other widely used analytical methods to identify integrable systems in the case of $n^{th}$-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). By synthesizing these methods we bring out the interlink between Lie point symmetries, contact symmetries, $λ$-symmetries, adjoint-symmetries, null forms, Darboux polynomials, integrating factors, Jacobi last multiplier and generalized $λ$-symmetries corresponding to the $n^{th}$-order ODEs. We also prove these interlinks with suitable examples. By exploiting …
In the article differential-difference (semi-discrete) lattices of hyperbolic type are investigated from the integrability viewpoint. More precisely we concentrate on a method for constructing generalized symmetries. This kind integrable lattices admit two hierarchies of generalized symmetries corresponding to the discrete and continuous independent variables $n$ and $x$. Symmetries corresponding to the direction of $n$ are constructed in a more or less standard way while when constructing symmetries of the other form we meet a problem of solving a functional equation. We have shown that to ha…
Recent concept of integrable nonholonomic deformation found for the KdV equation is extended to the mKdV equation and generalized to the AKNS system. For the deformed mKdV equation we find a matrix Lax pair, a novel two-fold integrable hierarchy and exact N-soliton solutions exhibiting unusual accelerating motion. We show that both the deformed KdV and mKdV systems possess infinitely many generalized symmetries, conserved quantities and a recursion operator.
We demonstrate, using the symbolic method together with p-adic and resultant methods, the existence of systems with exactly one or two generalized symmetries. Since the existence of one or two symmetries is often taken as a sure sign (or as the definition) of integrability, that is, the existence of symmetries on infinitely many orders, this shows that such practice is devoid of any mathematical foundation. Extensive computations show that systems with one symmetry are rather common, and with two symmetries are fairly rare, at least within the class we have been considering in this paper.
Generalized symmetry integrability test for discrete equations on the square lattice is studied. Integrability conditions are discussed. A method for searching higher symmetries (including non-autonomous ones) for quad graph equations is suggested based on characteristic vector fields.
We consider integrability structures of the generalized Hunter--Saxton equation. In particular, we obtain the Lax representation with nonremovable spectral parameter, find local recursion operators for symmetries and cosymmetries, generate an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of higher symmetries, and prove existence of infinite number of cosymmetries of higher order. Further, we give an example of employing the higher order symmetry to constructing exact globally defined solutions for the generalized Hunter--Saxton equation.
We consider a class of systems of difference equations defined on an elementary quadrilateral of the ${\mathbb{Z}}^2$ lattice, define their eliminable and dynamical variables, and demonstrate their use. Using the existence of infinite hierarchies of symmetries as integrability criterion, we derive necessary integrability conditions and employ them in the construction of the lowest order symmetries of a given system. These considerations are demonstrated with the help of three systems from the class of systems under consideration.
In the paper we investigate integrability characteristics for the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy. These characteristics include symmetries, Hamiltonian structures and conserved quantities. We give a Lax triad to construct a master symmetry and a hierarchy of non-isospectral dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili flows. These non-isospectral flows, together with the known isospectral dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili flows, form a Lie algebra, which is used to derive two sets of symmetries for the isospectral dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy. By means of the m…
Zero curvature formulations, pseudo-potentials, modified versions, ``Miura transformations'', and nonlocal symmetries of the Korteweg--de Vries, Camassa-- Holm and Hunter--Saxton equations are investigated from an unified point of view: these three equations belong to a two--parameters family of equations ``describing pseudo-spherical surfaces'', and therefore their basic integrability properties can be studied by geometrical means.
The different natures of approximate symmetries and their corresponding first integrals/invariants are delineated in the contexts of both Lie symmetries of ordinary differential equations and Noether symmetries of the Action Integral. Particular note is taken of the effect of taking higher orders of the perturbation parameter. Approximate symmetries of approximate first integrals/invariants and the problems of calculating them using the Lie method are considered.
It is investigated how two (standard or generalized) $λ-$symmetries of a given second-order ordinary differential equation can be used to solve the equation by quadratures. The method is based on the construction of two commuting generalized symmetries for this equation by using both $λ-$symmetries. The functions used in that construction are related with integrating factors of the reduced and auxiliary equations associated to the $λ-$symmetries. These functions can also be used to derive a Jacobi last multiplier and two integrating factors for the given equation. Some examples illustrate the …
We consider the problem of characterizing, for certain natural number $m$, the local $\mathcal{C}^m$-non-integrability near elliptic fixed points of smooth planar measure preserving maps. Our criterion relates this non-integrability with the existence of some Lie Symmetries associated to the maps, together with the study of the finiteness of its periodic points. One of the steps in the proof uses the regularity of the period function on the whole period annulus for non-degenerate centers, question that we believe that is interesting by itself. The obtained criterion can be applied to prove the…
Nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems are known to exhibit very many novel spatiotemporal patterns. Fisher equation is a prototype of diffusive equations. In this contribution we investigate the integrability properties of the generalized Fisher type equation to obtain physically interesting solutions using Lie symmetry analysis. In particular, we report several travelling wave patterns, static patterns and localized structures depending upon the choice of the parameters involved.
Representation theory is shown to be incomplete in terms of enumerating all integrable limits of quantum systems. As a consequence, one can find exactly solvable Hamiltonians which have apparently strongly broken symmetry. The number of these hidden symmetries depends upon the realization of the Hamiltonian.
We resolve the `baxterization' problem with the help of the automorphism group of the Yang-Baxter (resp. star-triangle, tetrahedron, \dots) equations. This infinite group of symmetries is realized as a non-linear (birational) Coxeter group acting on matrices, and exists as such, {\em beyond the narrow context of strict integrability}. It yields among other things an unexpected elliptic parametrization of the non-integrable sixteen-vertex model. It provides us with a class of discrete dynamical systems, and we address some related problems, such as characterizing the complexity of iterations.
In this paper, we investigate a relation between the Givental group of rank one and the Heisenberg-Virasoro symmetry group of the KP hierarchy. We prove, that only a two-parameter family of the Givental operators can be identified with elements of the Heisenberg-Virasoro symmetry group. This family describes triple Hodge integrals satisfying the Calabi-Yau condition. Using the identification of the elements of two groups we prove that the generating function of triple Hodge integrals satisfying the Calabi-Yau condition and its $Θ$-version are tau-functions of the KP hierarchy. This generalizes…
The complete lists of vector hyperbolic equations on the sphere that have integrable third order vector isotropic and anisotropic symmetries are presented. Several new integrable hyperbolic vector models are found. By their integrability we mean the existence of vector Backlund transformations depending on a parameter. For all new equations such transformations are constructed.
In this letter, the integrability aspects of a generalized Fisher type equation with modified diffusion in (1+1) and (2+1) dimensions are studied by carrying out a singularity structure and symmetry analysis. It is shown that the Painlevé property exists only for a special choice of the parameter ($m=2$). A Bäcklund transformation is shown to give rise to the linearizing transformation to the linear heat equation for this case ($m=2$). A Lie symmetry analysis also picks out the same case ($m=2$) as the only system among this class as having nontrivial infinite dimensional Lie algebra of symmet…
We review the integrable systems which arise as symmetry reductions of Plebanski's heavenly equations, and their generalisations. We also show that all four-dimensional null Kahler-Einstein (or type N hyper-heavenly) metrics with symmetry can be found from solutions to a variable coefficient generalisation of the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation.
A straightforward algorithm for the symbolic computation of higher-order symmetries of nonlinear evolution equations and lattice equations is presented. The scaling properties of the evolution or lattice equations are used to determine the polynomial form of the higher-order symmetries. The coefficients of the symmetry can be found by solving a linear system. The method applies to polynomial systems of PDEs of first-order in time and arbitrary order in one space variable. Likewise, lattices must be of first order in time but may involve arbitrary shifts in the discretized space variable. The a…
We discuss the interrelations between symmetry of an Ito stochastic differential equations (or systems thereof) and its integrability, extending in party results by R. Kozlov [J. Phys. A ${\bf 43}$ (2010) \& ${\bf 44}$ (2011)]. Together with integrability, we also consider the relations between symmetries and reducibility of a system of SDEs to a lower dimensional one. We consider both "deterministic" symmetries and "random" ones, in the sense introduced recently by Gaeta and Spadaro [J.Math. Phys. ${\bf 58}$ (2017)].
In this paper we try to find examples of integrable natural Hamiltonian systems on the sphere $S^2$ with the symmetries of each Platonic polyhedra. Although some of these systems are known, their expression is extremely complicated; we try here to find the simplest possible expressions for this kind of dynamical systems. Even in the simplest cases it is not easy to prove their integrability by direct computation of the first integrals, therefore, we make use of numerical methods to provide evidences of integrability; namely, by analyzing their Poincaré sections (surface sections). In this way …
In this paper we prove that the trapezoidal $H^{4}$ and the $H^{6}$ families of quad-equations are Darboux integrable systems. This result sheds light on the fact that such equations are linearizable as it was proved using the Algebraic Entropy test [G. Gubbiotti, C. Scimiterna and D. Levi, Algebraic entropy, symmetries and linearization for quad equations consistent on the cube, \emph{J. Nonlinear Math. Phys.}, 23(4):507543, 2016]. We conclude with some suggestions on how first integrals can be used to obtain general solutions.
The study of higher-dimensional black holes is a subject which has recently attracted a vast interest. Perhaps one of the most surprising discoveries is a realization that the properties of higher-dimensional black holes with the spherical horizon topology and described by the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metrics are very similar to the properties of the well known four-dimensional Kerr metric. This remarkable result stems from the existence of a single object called the principal tensor. In our review we discuss explicit and hidden symmetries of higher-dimensional black holes. We start with the overview of…

We present a generalized study and characterization of the integrability properties of the derivative non-linear Schrödinger equation in 1+1 dimensions. A Lax pair is derived for this equation by means of a Miura transformation and the singular manifold method. This procedure, together with the Darboux transformations, allow us to construct a wide class of rational soliton-like solutions. Lie classical symmetries have also been computed and similarity reductions have been analyzed and discussed.
Three symbolic algorithms for testing the integrability of polynomial systems of partial differential and differential-difference equations are presented. The first algorithm is the well-known Painlevé test, which is applicable to polynomial systems of ordinary and partial differential equations. The second and third algorithms allow one to explicitly compute polynomial conserved densities and higher-order symmetries of nonlinear evolution and lattice equations. The first algorithm is implemented in the symbolic syntax of both Macsyma and Mathematica. The second and third algorithms are availa…
This article is devoted to the partial difference quad-graph equations that can be represented in the form $φ(u(i+1,j),u(i+1,j+1))=ψ(u(i,j),u(i,j+1))$, where the map $(w,z) \rightarrow (φ(w,z),ψ(w,z))$ is injective. The transformation $v(i,j)=φ(u(i,j),u(i,j+1))$ relates any of such equations to a quad-graph equation. It is proved that this transformation maps Darboux integrable equations of the above form into Darboux integrable equations again and decreases the orders of the transformed integrals by one in the $j$-direction. As an application of this fact, the Darboux integrable equations pos…
We propose an algorithmic procedure i) to study the ``distance'' between an integrable PDE and any discretization of it, in the small lattice spacing epsilon regime, and, at the same time, ii) to test the (asymptotic) integrability properties of such discretization. This method should provide, in particular, useful and concrete informations on how good is any numerical scheme used to integrate a given integrable PDE. The procedure, illustrated on a fairly general 10-parameter family of discretizations of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation, consists of the following three steps: i) the constru…
The construction of a solution of the perturbed KdV equation encounters obstacles to asymptotic integrability beyond the first order, when the zero-order approximation is a multiple-soliton wave. In the standard analysis, the obstacles lead to the loss of integrability of the Normal Form, resulting in a zero-order term, which does not have the simple structure of the solution of the unperturbed equation. Exploiting the freedom in the perturbative expansion, we propose an algorithm that shifts the effect of the obstacles from the Normal Form to the higher-order terms. The Normal Form then remai…
We apply the Painleve test for integrability of partial differential equations to a system of two coupled Burgers-type equations found by Foursov, which was recently shown by Sergyeyev to possess infinitely many commuting local generalized symmetries without any recursion operator. The Painleve analysis easily detects that this is a typical C-integrable system in the Calogero sense and rediscovers its linearizing transformation.
Quadratic systems generated using Yang-Baxter equations are integrable in a sense, but we display a deterioration in the possession of the Painlevé property as the number of equations in each `integrable system' increases. Certain intermediate systems are constructed and also tested for the Painlevé property. The Lie symmetries are also computed for completeness.
In this paper we make an attempt to give a consistent background and definitions suitable for the theory of integrable difference equations. We adapt a concept of recursion operator to difference equations and show that it generates an infinite sequence of symmetries and canonical conservation laws for a difference equation. Similar to the case of partial differential equations these canonical densities can serve as integrability conditions for difference equations. We have found the recursion operators for the Viallet and all ABS equations.
Using geometrical approach exposed in arXiv:math/0304245 and arXiv:nlin/0511012, we explore the Camassa-Holm equation (both in its initial scalar form, and in the form of 2x2-system). We describe Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, recursion operators and infinite series of symmetries and conservation laws (local and nonlocal).

In this paper we study the integrability of a class of nonlinear non autonomous quad graph equations compatible around the cube introduced by Boll. We show that all these equations possess three point generalized symmetries which are subcases of either the Yamilov discretization of the Krichever--Novikov equation or of its non autonomous extension. We also prove that all those symmetries are integrable as pass the algebraic entropy test.
We consider various 2D lattice equations and their integrability, from the point of view of 3D consistency, Lax pairs and Bäcklund transformations. We show that these concepts, which are associated with integrability, are not strictly equivalent. In the course of our analysis, we introduce a number of black and white lattice models, as well as variants of the functional Yang-Baxter equation.
Examples of scalar conserved currents are presented for trigonometric, hyperbolic and elliptic versions of the Hubbard model with non-nearest neighbour variable range hopping. They support for the first time the hypothesis about the integrability of the elliptic version. The two- electron wave functions are constructed in an explicit form.
We review some recents developments of the algebraic structures and spectral properties of non-Hermitian deformations of Calogero models. The behavior of such extensions is illustrated by the $A_2$ trigonometric and the $D_3$ angular Calogero models. Features like intertwining operators and conserved charges are discussed in terms of Dunkl operators. Hidden symmetries coming from the so-called algebraic integrability for integral values of the coupling are addressed together with a physical regularization of their action on the states by virtue of a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry deformation.
We perform a detailed study on the integrability of the Benney-Lin and KdV-Kawahara equations by using the Lie symmetry analysis and the singularity analysis. We find that the equations under our consideration admit integrable travelling-wave solutions. The singularity analysis is applied for the partial differential equations and the generic algebraic solution is presented.
Methods for the computation of invariants and symmetries of nonlinear evolution, wave, and lattice equations are presented. The algorithms are based on dimensional analysis, and can be implemented in any symbolic language, such as Mathematica. Invariants and symmetries are shown for several well-known equations. Our Mathematica package allows one to automatically compute invariants and symmetries. Applied to systems with parameters, the package determines the conditions on these parameters so that a sequence of invariants or symmetries exists. The software can thus be used to test the integrab…
As has been shown by Watanabe and Strogatz (WS) [Phys. Rev. Lett., 70, 2391 (1993)], a population of identical phase oscillators, sine-coupled to a common field, is a partially integrable system for any size: its dynamics reduces to equations for several collective variables. Here we develop a perturbation approach for weakly nonidentical ensembles. We calculate corrections to the WS dynamics for two types of perturbations: due to a distribution of natural frequencies and of forcing terms, and due to small white noise. We demonstrate, that in both cases the complex mean field for which the dyn…
This contributed conference proceeding reviews some results about a system of a few identical particles with spin trapped in one-dimensional potentials and experiencing two-body interactions. The focus is on how symmetry, integrability, and solvability depend on the trap shape, two-body interaction, the number of particles, and the number of spin components. A series of comments are presented that characterize the minimal symmetries possible for a composite system constructed from interacting single particles, with special focus on the contact interaction. For five and more particles with inte…
We consider integrable Matrix Product States (MPS) in integrable spin chains and show that they correspond to "operator valued" solutions of the so-called twisted Boundary Yang-Baxter (or reflection) equation. We argue that the integrability condition is equivalent to a new linear intertwiner relation, which we call the "square root relation", because it involves half of the steps of the reflection equation. It is then shown that the square root relation leads to the full Boundary Yang-Baxter equations. We provide explicit solutions in a number of cases characterized by special symmetries. The…
In this note we compare the geodesic formalism for spherically symmetric black hole solutions with the black hole effective potential approach. The geodesic formalism is beneficial for symmetric supergravity theories since the symmetries of the larger target space leads to a complete set of commuting constants of motion that establish the integrability of the geodesic equations of motion, as shown in arXiv:1007.3209. We point out that the integrability lifts straightforwardly to the integrability of the equations of motion with a black hole potential. This construction turns out to be a genera…
A higher dimensional analogue of the dispersionless KP hierarchy is introduced. In addition to the two-dimensional ``phase space'' variables $(k,x)$ of the dispersionless KP hierarchy, this hierarchy has extra spatial dimensions compactified to a two (or any even) dimensional torus. Integrability of this hierarchy and the existence of an infinite dimensional of ``additional symmetries'' are ensured by an underlying twistor theoretical structure (or a nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem). An analogue of the tau function, whose logarithm gives the $F$ function (``free energy'' or ``prepotential'' …
We have studied the space-reflection symmetries of some soliton solutions of deformed sine-Gordon models in the context of the quasi-integrability concept. Considering a dual pair of anomalous Lax representations of the deformed model we compute analytically and numerically an infinite number of alternating conserved and asymptotically conserved charges through a modification of the usual techniques of integrable field theories. The charges associated to two-solitons with a definite parity under space-reflection symmetry, i.e. kink-kink (odd parity) and kink-antikink (even parity) scatterings …
Algorithms for the symbolic computation of polynomial conservation laws, generalized symmetries, and recursion operators for systems of nonlinear differential-difference equations (DDEs) are presented. The algorithms can be used to test the complete integrability of nonlinear DDEs. The ubiquitous Toda lattice illustrates the steps of the algorithms, which have been implemented in {\em Mathematica}. The codes {\sc InvariantsSymmetries.m} and {\sc DDERecursionOperator.m} can aid researchers interested in properties of nonlinear DDEs.
