Numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations of quantum impurity models, based on a logarithmic discretization in energy of electronic or bosonic Hamiltonians, provide a powerful tool to describe physics involving widely separated energy scales, as typically encountered in nanostructures and strongly correlated materials. This main advantage of the NRG was however considered a drawback for resolving sharp spectral features at finite energy, such as dissipative atomic peaks. Surprisingly, we find a bunching of many-body levels in NRG spectra near dissipative resonances, and exploit this by combining the widely-used Oliveira's $z$-trick, using an averaging over {\it few} discrete NRG spectra, with an optimized {\it frequency-dependent} broadening parameter $b(\w)$. This strategy offers a tremendous gain in computational power and extracts all the needed information from the raw NRG data without {\it a priori} knowledge of the various energy scales at play. As an application we investigate with high precision the crossover from coherent to incoherent dynamics in the spin boson model.
We propose an adaptive scheme of broadening the discrete spectral data from numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations to improve the resolution of dynamical properties at finite energies. While the conventional scheme overbroadens narrow features at large frequency by broadening discrete weights with constant width in log-frequency, our scheme broadens each discrete contribution individually based on its sensitivity to a z-shift in the logarithmic discretization intervals. We demonstrate that the adaptive broadening better resolves various features in non-interacting and interacting m…
We calculate the finite-frequency current noise of a nonequilibrium resonance-level quantum dot close to a dissipative quantum phase transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type between a de-localized phase for weak dissipation and a localized phase for strong dissipation. The resonance-level is coupled to two spinless fermionic baths with a finite bias voltage and an Ohmic boson bath representing the dissipative environment. The system is equivalent to an effective anisotropic Kondo model out of equilibrium. To compute the finite-frequency noise, we combine two recently developed Functiona…
Mesoscopic spin ensembles coupled to a cavity offer the exciting prospect of observing complex nonclassical phenomena that pool the microscopic features from a few spins with those of macroscopic spin ensembles. Here, we demonstrate how the collective interactions in an ensemble of as many as hundred spins can be harnessed to obtain a periodic pulse train of nonclassical light. To unravel the full quantum dynamics and photon statistics, we develop a time-adaptive variational renormalization group method that accurately captures the underlying Lindbladian dynamics of the mesoscopic spin-cavity …
We present a detailed model study of exciton transfer processes in donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) systems. Using a model which includes the intermolecular Coulomb interaction and the coupling to a dissipative environment we calculate the phase diagram, the absorption spectrum as well as dynamic equilibrium properties with the numerical renormalization group. This method is non-perturbative and therefore allows to cover the full parameter space, especially the case when the intermolecular Coulomb interaction is of the same order as the coupling to the environment and perturbation theory cannot be …
We study a generic problem of dissipative quantum mechanics, a small local quantum system with discrete states coupled in an arbitrary way (i.e. not necessarily linear) to several infinitely large particle or heat reservoirs. For both bosonic or fermionic reservoirs we develop a quantum field-theoretical diagrammatic formulation in Liouville space by expanding systematically in the reservoir-system coupling and integrating out the reservoir degrees of freedom. As a result we obtain a kinetic equation for the reduced density matrix of the quantum system. Based on this formalism, we present a fo…
We provide an extensive study of the sub-ohmic spin-boson model with power law density of states J(ω)=ω^s (with 0<s<1), focusing on the equilibrium dynamics of the three possible spin components, from very weak dissipation to the quantum critical regime. Two complementary methods, the bosonic Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) and Majorana diagrammatics, are used to explore the physical properties in a wide range of parameters. We show that the bosonic self-energy is the crucial ingredient for the description of critical fluctuations, but that many-body vertex corrections need to be incorpo…
We present the results of a series of Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the temperature dependent conductance of dissipative non-superconducting tunnel junctions. Finite size scaling methods are used to demonstrate the absence of coherent transport in Ohmic tunnel junctions. However, a quantum phase transition between coherent and incoherent behavior is found in sub-Ohmic tunnel junctions. The critical conductance is found to be temperature independent and the critical exponents, $ν$ and $η$, are found to be in agreement with renormalization group results by Kosterlitz.
By combining Wilson's numerical renormalization group with a modified Bloch-Redfield approach we are able to eliminate the artificial broadening of the Lehmann representation of quantum impurity spectral functions required by the standard numerical renormalization group algorithm. Our approach is based on the exact reproduction of the continuous coupling function in the original quantum impurity model. It augments each chain site of the Wilson chain by a coupling to an additional reservoir. This open Wilson chain is constructed by a continuous fraction expansion and the coupling function is tr…
We pioneerly investigate the non-equilibrium transport near a quantum phase transition in a generic and relatively simple case model, the dissipative resonant level model, that has many ramifications in nanosystems. We formulate a rigorous mapping and apply a controlled frequency-dependent renormalization group approach to compute the non-equilibrium current in the presence of a finite bias voltage V. For V -> 0, we find that the conductance has its well-known equilibrium form, while it displays a distinct non-equilibrium profile at finite voltage.
Many quantum mechanical problems (such as dissipative phase fluctuations in metallic and superconducting nanocircuits, or impurity scattering in Luttinger liquids) involve a continuum of bosonic modes with a marginal spectral density diverging as the inverse of energy. We construct a Numerical Renormalization Group in this singular case, with a manageable violation of scale separation at high energy, capturing reliably the low energy physics. The method is demonstrated by a non-perturbative solution over several energy decades for the dynamical conductance of a Luttinger liquid with a single s…
The resonant-level model represents a paradigmatic quantum system which serves as a basis for many other quantum impurity models. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the non-equilibrium transport near a quantum phase transition in a spinless dissipative resonant-level model, extending earlier work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 216803 (2009)]. A detailed derivation of a rigorous mapping of our system onto an effective Kondo model is presented. A controlled energy-dependent renormalization group approach is applied to compute the non-equilibrium current in the presence of a finite bias voltage V. In…
We use the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method (t-DMRG) to study the nonequilibrium dynamics of a benchmark quantum impurity system which has a time-dependent Hamiltonian. This model is a resonant-level model, obtained by a mapping from a certain Ohmic spin-boson model describing the dissipative Landau-Zener transition. We map the resonant-level model onto a Wilson chain, then calculate the time-dependent occupation $n_d(t)$ of the resonant level. We compare t-DMRG results with exact results at zero temperature and find very good agreement. We also give a physic…
Applying newly developed dynamical density matrix renormalization group techniques at zero and finite temperatures to a Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling, we examine the optical conductivity of a typical one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr_2CuO_3. We find a set of parameters in the Hubbard-Holstein model, which can describe optical conductivity for both Mott-gap excitation in the high-energy region and phonon-assisted spin excitation in the low-energy region. We also find that electron-phonon interaction gives additional broadening in the temperature dependence of the Mott-gap excitation.
We introduce an improved approach for obtaining smooth finite-temperature spectral functions of quantum impurity models using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) technique. It is based on calculating first the Green's function on the imaginary-frequency axis, followed by an analytic continuation to the real-frequency axis using Padé approximants. The arbitrariness in choosing a suitable kernel in the conventional broadening approach is thereby removed and, furthermore, we find that the Padé method is able to resolve fine details in spectral functions with less artifacts on the scale of o…
Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) is so far the only nonperturbative technique that can reliably access low-energy properties of quantum impurity systems. We present a recent extension of the method, the DM-NRG, which yields highly accurate results for dynamical quantities at arbitrary frequencies and temperatures. As an application, we determine the spectrum of a quantum dot in an external magnetic field. Furthermore, we discuss magnetic impurities with orbital degeneracy, which have been inferred in recent experiments on quantum dots in an Aharonov-Bohm geometry. It is demonstra…
We extend the numerical renormalization-group method to treat Bose-Fermi Kondo models (BFKMs) describing a local moment coupled both to a conduction band and to a dissipative bosonic bath representing, e.g., lattice or spin collective excitations of the environment. We apply the method to the Ising-symmetry BFKM with a structureless band and a bath spectral function η(ω)\propto ω^s. The method is valid for all bath exponents s and all temperatures T. For 0<s<1, the range of interest in the context of heavy-fermion quantum criticality, an interacting critical point, characterized by hyperscalin…
Current widely-used approaches to calculate spectral functions using the density-matrix renormalization group in frequency space either necessarily include an artificial broadening (correction-vector method) or have limited resolution (time-domain density-matrix renormalization group with Fourier transform method). Here we propose an adaptive Lanczos-vector method to calculate the coefficients of a continued fraction expansion of the spectral function iteratively. We show that one can obtain a very accurate representation of the spectral function very efficiently, and that one can also directl…
Based on the recent paper (Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 216803, (2009)), we study the nonequilibrium occupation number and charge susceptibility of a resonance level close to a dissipative quantum phase transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type between a de-localized phase for weak dissipation and a localized phase for strong dissipation. The resonance level is coupled to two spinless fermionic baths with a finite bias voltage and an Ohmic bosonic bath representing the dissipative environment. The system is equivalent to an effective anisotropic Kondo model out of equilibrium. Within the nonequ…
We study non-equilibrium transport through a spin-1 Kondo dot in a local magnetic field. To this end we perform a two-loop renormalization group analysis in the weak-coupling regime yielding analytic results for (i) the renormalized magnetic field and the g-factor, (ii) the time evolution of observables and the relevant decay rates, (iii) the magnetization and anisotropy as well as (iv) the current and differential conductance in the stationary state. In particular, we find that compared to a spin-1/2 Kondo dot there exist three additional decay rates resulting in an enhanced broadening of the…
We present a numerical method for calculating piecewise smooth spectral functions of correlated quantum systems in the thermodynamic limit from the spectra of finite systems computed using the dynamical or correction-vector density-matrix renormalization group method. The key idea is to consider this problem as a blind deconvolution with an unknown kernel which causes both a broadening and finite-size corrections of the spectrum. In practice, the method reduces to a least-square optimization under non-linear constraints which enforce the positivity and piecewise smoothness of spectral function…
We extend the numerical renormalization-group method to Bose-Fermi Kondo models (BFKMs), describing a local moment coupled to a conduction band and a dissipative bosonic bath. We apply the method to the Ising-symmetry BFKM with a bosonic bath spectral function $η(ω)\propto ω^s$, of interest in connection with heavy-fermion criticality. For $0<s<1$, an interacting critical point, characterized by hyperscaling of exponents and $ω/T$-scaling, describes a quantum phase transition between Kondo-screened and localized phases. Connection is made to other results for the BFKM and the spin-boson model.
We study a spinless level that hybridizes with a fermionic band and is also coupled via its charge to a dissipative bosonic bath. We consider the general case of a power-law hybridization function $Γ(\w)\propto |\w|^r$ with $r\ge 0$, and a bosonic bath spectral function $B(\w)\propto \w^s$ with $s\ge -1$. For $r<1$ and $\mathrm{max}(0,2r-1)<s<1$, this Bose-Fermi quantum impurity model features a continuous zero-temperature transition between a delocalized phase, with tunneling between the impurity level and the band, and a localized phase, in which dissipation suppresses tunneling in the low-e…
We describe the critical behavior of electric field-driven (dynamic) Mott insulator-to-metal transitions in dissipative Fermi and Bose systems in terms of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians invariant under simultaneous parity (P) and time-reversal (T) operations. The dynamic Mott transition is identified as a PT symmetry-breaking phase transition, with the Mott insulating state corresponding to the regime of unbroken PT symmetry with a real energy spectrum. We establish that the imaginary part of the Hamiltonian arises from the combined effects of the driving field and inherent dissipation. We derive …
We discuss the problem of a spin 1/2 impurity immersed in a spin S magnetically ordered background. We show that the problem maps onto a generalization of the dissipative two level system (DTLS) with two independent heat baths, associated with the Goldstone modes of the magnet, that couple to different components of the impurity spin operator. Using analytical perturbative renormalization group (RG) methods and accurate numerical renormalization group (NRG) we show that contrary to other dissipative models there is quantum frustration of decoherence and quasi-scaling even in the strong couplin…
The application of Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method to dissipative quantum impurity models, in particular the sub-ohmic spin-boson model, has led to conclusions regarding the quantum critical behavior which are in disagreement with those from other methods and which are by now recognized as erroneous. The errors of NRG remained initially undetected because NRG delivered an internally consistent set of critical exponents satisfying hyperscaling. Here we discuss how the conspiracy of two errors - the Hilbert-space truncation error and the mass-flow error - could lead to this…
I present a density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method for calculating dynamical properties and excited states in low-dimensional lattice quantum many-body systems. The method is based on an exact variational principle for dynamical correlation functions and the excited states contributing to them. This dynamical DMRG is an alternate formulation of the correction vector DMRG but is both simpler and more accurate. The finite-size scaling of spectral functions is discussed and a method for analyzing the scaling of dense spectra is described. The key idea of the method is a size-dependent…
By means of a unitary transformation, we propose an ansatz to study quantum phase transitions in the ground state of a two-qubit system interacting with a dissipative reservoir. First, the ground state phase diagram is analyzed in the presence of the Ohmic and sub-Ohmic bath using an analytic ground state wave function which takes into account the competition between intrasite tunneling and intersite correlation. The quantum critical point is determined as the transition point from non-degenerate to degenerate ground state and our calculated critical coupling strength $α_c$ agrees with that fr…
We discuss the crucial role played by finite-size effects and inhomogeneity on the Beresinkii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in two-dimensional superconductors. In particular, we focus on the temperature dependence of the resistivity, that is dominated by superconducting fluctuations above the BKT transition temperature $T_{BKT}$ and by inhomogeneity below it. By means of a renormalization-group approach we establish a direct correspondence between the parameter values used to describe the BKT fluctuation regime and the distance between $T_{BKT}$ and the mean-field Ginzburg-Landau transi…
The two-dimensional dissipative quantum XY model is applicable to the quantum-critical properties of diverse experimental systems, ranging from the superconductor to insulator transitions, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic transitions in metals, to the loop-current order transition in the cuprates. We solve the re-expression of this model in terms of topological excitations: vortices and a variety of instantons, by renormalization group methods. The calculations explain the extraordinary properties of the model discovered in Monte-Carlo calculations: the separability of the quantum critical …
We investigate non-equilibrium two-electron transfer in a model redox system represented by a two-site extended Hubbard model and embedded in a dissipative environment. The influence of the electron-electron interactions and the coupling to a dissipative bosonic bath on the electron transfer is studied in different temperature regimes. At high temperatures Marcus transfer rates are evaluated and at low temperatures, we calculate equilibrium and non-equilibrium population probabilities of the donor and acceptor with the non-perturbative Numerical Renormalization Group approach. We obtain the no…
We employ a recently developed variant of the functional renormalization group method for spin systems, the so-called pseudo Majorana functional renormalization group, to investigate three-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg models at finite temperatures. We study unfrustrated and frustrated Heisenberg systems on the simple cubic and pyrochlore lattices. Comparing our results with other quantum many-body techniques, we demonstrate a high quantitative accuracy of our method. Particularly, for the unfrustrated simple cubic lattice antiferromagnet ordering temperatures obtained from finite-size scali…
In the beginning of the 1970's, Wilson developed the concept of a fully non-perturbative renormalization group transformation. Applied to the Kondo problem, this numerical renormalization group method (NRG) gave for the first time the full crossover from the high-temperature phase of a free spin to the low-temperature phase of a completely screened spin. The NRG has been later generalized to a variety of quantum impurity problems. The purpose of this review is to give a brief introduction to the NRG method including some guidelines of how to calculate physical quantities, and to survey the dev…
We investigate the dynamical properties of low dimensional systems, driven by external noise sources. Specifically we consider a resistively shunted Josephson junction and a one dimensional quantum liquid in a commensurate lattice potential, subject to $1/f$ noise. In absence of nonlinear coupling, we have shown previously that these systems establish a non-equilibrium critical steady state [Nature Phys. 6, 806 (2010)]. Here we use this state as the basis for a controlled renormalization group analysis using the Keldysh path integral formulation to treat the non linearities: the Josephson coup…
We discuss a particular source of error in the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method for quantum impurity problems, which is related to a renormalization of impurity parameters due to the bath propagator. At any step of the NRG calculation, this renormalization is only partially taken into account, leading to systematic variation of the impurity parameters along the flow. This effect can cause qualitatively incorrect results when studying quantum critical phenomena, as it leads to an implicit variation of the phase transition's control parameter as function of the temperature and thus t…
Noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware is typically limited to low-depth quantum circuits to limit the number of opportunities for introduction of error by unreliable quantum gates. A less-explored alternative approach is to repeatedly apply a quantum channel with a desired quantum state as a stable fixed point. Increased circuit depth can in this case be beneficial rather than harmful due to dissipative self-correction. The quantum channels constructed from MERA circuits can be interpreted in terms of the renormalization group(RG), and their fixed points are RG fixed points, i.e. sc…
We demonstrate the universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids by calculating correlation functions and performing finite-size scaling analysis of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain as a prototypical model in one-dimensional open quantum many-body systems. Our analytic calculation is based on effective field theory with bosonization, finite-size scaling approach in conformal field theory, and the Bethe-ansatz solution. Our numerical analysis is based on the density-matrix renormalization group generalized to non-Hermitian systems (NH-DMRG). We uncover that the model in the …
