We use a model of polarized Galactic emission developed by the the Planck collaboration to assess the impact of foregrounds on B-mode detection at low multipoles. Our main interest is to applications of noisy polarization data and in particular to assessing the feasibility of B-mode detection by Planck. This limits the complexity of foreground subtraction techniques that can be applied to the data. We analyze internal linear combination techniques and show that the offset caused by the dominant E-mode polarization pattern leads to a fundamental limit of r approximately 0.1 for the tensor-scalar ratio even in the absence of instrumental noise. We devise a simple, robust, template fitting technique using multi-frequency polarization maps. We show that template fitting using Planck data alone offers a feasible way of recovering primordial B-modes from dominant foreground contamination, even in the presence of noise on the data and templates. We implement and test a pixel-based scheme for computing the likelihood function of cosmological parameters at low multipoles that incorporates foreground subtraction of noisy data.
We study the alignments of the low multipoles of CMB anisotropies with specific directions in the sky (i.e. the dipole, the north Ecliptic pole, the north Galactic pole and the north Super Galactic pole). Performing $10^5$ random extractions we have found that: 1) separately quadrupole and octupole are mildly orthogonal to the dipole but when they are considered together, in analogy to \cite{Copi2006}, we find an unlikely orthogonality at the level of 0.8% C.L.; 2) the multipole vectors associated to $\ell=4$ are unlikely aligned with the dipole at $99.1 %$ C.L.; 3) the multipole vectors assoc…
The PLANCK satellite mission has been launched the 14th of May 2009 and is dedicated to the measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in temperature and polarization. The presence of diffuse galactic polarized emission contaminates the measurement of the CMB anisotropies, in particular in polarization. Therefore a good knowledge of these emissions is needed to the accuracy required for PLANCK. In this context, we have developed and implemented a coherent 3D model of the two main polarized galactic emissions : synchrotron radiation and thermal dust. We have compared these models to t…
The Planck satellite experiment, which was launched the 14th of may 2009, will give an accurate measurement of the anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in temperature and polarization. This measurement is polluted by the presence of diffuse galactic polarized foreground emissions. In order to obtain the level of accuracy required for the Planck mission it is necessary to deal with these foregrounds. In order to do this, have develloped and implemented coherent 3D models of the two main galactic polarized emissions : the synchrotron and thermal dust emissions. We have optimized…
The detection of the redshifted cosmological $21$~cm line signal requires the removal of the Galactic and extragalactic foreground emission, which is orders of magnitude brighter anywhere in the sky. Foreground cleaning methods currently used are efficient in removing spectrally smooth components. However, they struggle in the presence of not spectrally smooth contamination that is, therefore, potentially the most dangerous one. An example of this is the polarized synchrotron emission, which is Faraday rotated by the interstellar medium and leaks into total intensity due to instrumental imperf…
The purpose of this work is to characterize the diffuse Galactic polarized synchrotron, which is the dominant CMB foreground emission at low frequency. We present EE, BB, and EB power spectra estimated from polarization frequency maps at 23 and 30 GHz as observed respectively by the WMAP K-band and the Planck lowest frequency channel, for a set of six sky regions covering from 30% to 94% of the sky. We study the synchrotron polarization angular distribution and spectral energy distribution (SED) by means of the so-called pseudo-$C_\ell$ formalism, provided by the NaMaster package, in the multi…
We present for the first time a coherent model of the polarized Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emissions which are the main diffuse foreground for the measurement of the polarized power spectra of the CMB fluctuations with the Planck satellite mission. We produce 3D models of the Galactic magnetic field including regular and turbulent components, and of the distribution of matter in the Galaxy, relativistic electrons and dust grains. By integrating along the line of sight we construct maps of the polarized Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emission for each of these models and compa…
Next generation CMB experiments such as CMB-S4 aim at measuring the CMB lensing potential at sub-percent precision where most of the constraining power will come from CMB polarization. We investigate the prospects of achieving this goal in the presence of large-scale, diffuse galactic foreground emission by using non-Gaussian sky simulations and exploit multi-frequency information to clean those. We show that, while prior to foreground cleaning, cosmological parameter estimates from the contaminated lensing potential estimation can be significantly biased, these can be successfully mitigated b…
We analyze statistical properties of the separate multipole moments of the CMB temperature maps and find that the distribution tails are slightly non-Gaussian. Moreover, the deviation from Gaussianity peaks sharply at around $l\sim45\pm10$. If the detected non-Gaussianities should be attributed to the remaining foreground contamination from the galactic plane, an appearance of a similar peak in different frequency bands is unexpected. The presence of the peak was also confirmed by the analysis of weighted multipoles which is less susceptible to the galactic noise. A separate analysis of the mu…
Polarized foregrounds are going to be a serious challenge for detecting CMB cosmological B-modes. Both diffuse Galactic emission and extragalactic sources contribute significantly to the power spectrum on large angular scales. At low frequencies, Galactic synchrotron emission will dominate with fractional polarization $\sim 20-40%$ at high latitudes while radio sources can contribute significantly even on large ($\sim 1^{\circ}$) angular scales. Nevertheless, simulations suggest that a detection at the level of $r=0.001$ might be achievable if the foregrounds are not too complex.
The polarized Galactic thermal dust emission constitutes a major probe for the study and the characterization of the Galactic Magnetic Field (GMF). In this paper, we apply the maximum-likelihood analysis that we established in our companion paper (Pelgrims, Macías-Pérez & Ruppin) to model the large-scale regular-component of the GMF from the polarized diffuse emission from Galactic thermal dust as measured by $Planck$ at 353 GHz. As a first attempt, we consider three models to describe the dust density distribution across the whole Galaxy and four models for the GMF. All models are parametric …
We present constraints on primordial B modes from large angular scale cosmic microwave background polarisation anisotropies measured with the Planck satellite. To remove Galactic polarised foregrounds, we use a Bayesian parametric component separation method, modelling synchrotron radiation as a power law and thermal dust emission as a modified blackbody. This method propagates uncertainties from the foreground cleaning into the noise covariance matrices of the maps. We construct two likelihoods: (i) a semi-analytical cross-spectrum-based likelihood-approximation scheme (momento) and (ii) an e…
This work is point of the preparation to the analysis of the PLANCK satellite data. The PLANCK satellite is an ESA mission which has been launched the 14th of may 2009 and is dedicaced to the measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in temperature and polarization. The presence of diffuse Galactic polarized emissions disturb the measurement of the CMB anisotropies, in particular in polarization. Therefore a precise knowledge of these emissions is needed to obtain the level of accuracy required for PLANCK. In this context, we have developed and implemented a coherent 3D model of the…
The purpose of this work is to characterize the diffuse Galactic polarized synchrotron. We present EE, BB, and EB power spectra estimated cross-correlating Planck and WMAP polarization frequency maps at 23 and 30 GHz, for a set of six sky regions covering from 30% to 94% of the sky. The EE and BB angular power spectra show a steep decay of the spectral amplitude as a function of multipole, approximated by a power law with power indices around -2.9 for both components. The B/E ratio is about 0.22. The EB cross-component is compatible with zero at 1$σ$, with upper constraint on the EB/EE ratio o…
We apply our symmetry based Power tensor technique to test conformity of PLANCK Polarization maps with statistical isotropy. On a wide range of angular scales (l=40-150), our preliminary analysis detects many statistically anisotropic multipoles in foreground cleaned full sky PLANCK polarization maps viz., COMMANDER and NILC. We also study the effect of residual foregrounds that may still be present in the galactic plane using both common UPB77 polarization mask, as well as the individual component separation method specific polarization masks. However some of the statistically anisotropic mod…
A critical challenge in the observation of the redshifted 21-cm line is its separation from bright Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. In particular, the instrumental leakage of polarized foregrounds, which undergo significant Faraday rotation as they propagate through the interstellar medium, may harmfully contaminate the 21-cm power spectrum. We develop a formalism to describe the leakage due to instrumental widefield effects in visibility-based power spectra measured with redundant arrays, extending the delay-spectrum approach presented in Parsons et al. (2012). We construct polarized s…
The polarized Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emission constitutes a major tool in the study of the Galactic magnetic field (GMF) and in constraining its strength and geometry for the regular and turbulent components. In this paper, we review the modeling of these two components of the polarized Galactic emission and present our strategy for optimally exploiting the currently existing data sets. We investigate a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to constrain the model parameter space through maximum-likelihood analysis, focusing mainly on dust polarized emission. Relying on simulati…
We present an analysis of the level of polarized dust and synchrotron emission using the WMAP9 and Planck data. The primary goal of this study is to inform the assessment of foreground contamination in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements below $\ell\sim200$ from 23 to 353 GHz. We compute angular power spectra as a function of sky cut based on the Planck 353 GHz polarization maps. Our primary findings are the following. (1) There is a spatial correlation between the dust emission as measured by Planck at 353 GHz and the synchrotron emission as measured by WMAP at 23 GHz with $ρ\a…
Understanding the properties of the galactic emission at millimetre wavelengths is important for studies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In this work we explore the bispectrum, the harmonic equivalent of the three point function, from galactic dust and synchrotron emission. We investigate these effects across a broad range of frequencies using the synchrotron dominated S-band Polarization All Sky Survey (SPASS) maps at 2.3 GHz, the Planck satellite maps (30-857 GHz) and dust dominated Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) maps at 3 THz. We measure bispectra of total intensity fields…
We present an estimate of the polarized spectral index between the Planck 30 and 44 GHz surveys in $3.7^\circ$ pixels across the entire sky. We use an objective reference prior that maximises the impact of the data on the posterior and multiply this by a maximum entropy prior that includes information from observations in total intensity by assuming a polarization fraction. Our parametrization of the problem allows the reference prior to be easily determined and also provides a natural method of including prior information. The spectral index map is consistent with those found by others betwee…
Context: Currently, detection of the primordial gravitational waves by the B-mode of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is primarily limited by our knowledge of the polarized microwave foreground emissions. Thus improvements of the foreground analysis are necessary. As revealed in~\cite{2018arXiv180410382L}, the E-mode and B-mode of the polarized foreground have noticeable different properties, both in morphology and frequency spectrum, suggesting that they arise from different physical processes, and need to be studied separately. Aims: I will study the polarized emission from Galactic loops, …
Dark Matter (DM) annihilation in our Galaxy may produce a linearly polarized synchrotron signal. We use, for the first time, synchrotron polarization to constrain the DM annihilation cross section by comparing theoretical predictions with the latest polarization maps obtained by the Planck satellite collaboration. We find that synchrotron polarization is typically more constraining than synchrotron intensity by about one order of magnitude, independently of uncertainties in the modeling of electron and positron propagation, or of the Galactic magnetic field. Our bounds compete with Cosmic Micr…
Experiments designed to measure the redshifted 21~cm line from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) are challenged by strong astrophysical foreground contamination, ionospheric distortions, complex instrumental response and other different types of noise (e.g. radio frequency interference). The astrophysical foregrounds are dominated by diffuse synchrotron emission from our Galaxy. Here we present a simulation of the Galactic emission used as a foreground module for the LOFAR- EoR key science project end-to-end simulations. The simulation produces total and polarized intensity over $10^\circ \times…
The Planck survey has quantified polarized Galactic foregrounds and established that they are a main limiting factor in the quest for the cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode signal induced by primordial gravitational waves during cosmic inflation. Accurate separation of the Galactic foregrounds therefore binds this quest to our understanding of the magnetized interstellar medium (ISM). The two most relevant empirical results from analysis of Planck data are line of sight depolarization arising from fluctuations of the Galactic magnetic field orientation and alignment of filamentary dust s…
We present 3D models of the Galactic magnetic field including regular and turbulent components, and of the distribution of matter in the Galaxy including relativistic electrons and dust grains. By integrating along the line of sight, we construct maps of the polarized Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emissions for each of these models. We perform a likelihood analysis to compare the maps of the Ka, Q, V and W bands of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (Wmap) and the 353 GHz Archeops data to the models obtained by varying the pitch angle of the regular magnetic field, the relative a…

We estimate the spectral index, beta, of polarized synchrotron emission as observed in the 9 yr WMAP sky maps using two methods, linear regression ("T-T plot") and maximum likelihood. We partition the sky into 24 disjoint sky regions, and evaluate the spectral index for all polarization angles between 0 deg and 85 deg in steps of 5. Averaging over polarization angles, we derive a mean spectral index of beta_all-sky=-2.99+-0.01 in the frequency range of 23-33 GHz. We find that the synchrotron spectral index steepens by 0.14 from low to high Galactic latitudes, in agreement with previous studies…
The lack of power of large--angle CMB anisotropies is known to increase its statistical significance at higher Galactic latitudes, where a string--inspired pre--inflationary scale $Δ$ can also be detected. Considering the Planck 2015 data, and relying largely on a Bayesian approach, we show that the effect is mostly driven by the \emph{even}--$\ell$ harmonic multipoles with $\ell \lesssim 20$, which appear sizably suppressed in a way that is robust with respect to Galactic masking, along with the corresponding detections of $Δ$. On the other hand, the first \emph{odd}--$\ell$ multipoles are on…

We present a detailed study of the Faraday depth structure of four bright (> 1 Jy), strongly polarized, unresolved, radio-loud quasars. The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) was used to observe these sources with 2 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth from 1.1 to 3.1 GHz. This allowed us to spectrally resolve the polarization structure of spatially unresolved radio sources, and by fitting various Faraday rotation models to the data, we conclusively demonstrate that two of the sources cannot be described by a simple rotation measure (RM) component modified by depolarization from a foreground F…
We consider the effectiveness of foreground cleaning in the recovery of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization sourced by gravitational waves for tensor-to-scalar ratios in the range $0<r<0.1$. Using the planned survey area, frequency bands, and sensitivity of the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS), we simulate maps of Stokes $Q$ and $U$ parameters at 40, 90, 150, and 220 GHz, including realistic models of the CMB, diffuse Galactic thermal dust and synchrotron foregrounds, and Gaussian white noise. We use linear combinations (LCs) of the simulated multifrequency data to obt…
Contamination by polarized foregrounds is one of the biggest challenges for future polarized cosmic microwave background (CMB) surveys and the potential detection of primordial $B$-modes. Future experiments, such as Simons Observatory (SO) and CMB-S4, will aim at very deep observations in relatively small ($f_{\rm sky} \sim 0.1$) areas of the sky. In this work, we investigate the forecasted performance, as a function of the survey field location on the sky, for regions over the full sky, balancing between polarized foreground avoidance and foreground component separation modeling needs. To do …
The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect has a distinct spectral signature that allows its separation from fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and foregrounds. Using CMB anisotropies measured in Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe's five-year maps, we constrain the SZ fluctuations at large, degree angular scales corresponding to multipoles in the range from 10 to 400. We provide upper bounds on SZ fluctuations at multipoles greater than 50, and find evidence for a hemispherically asymmetric signal at ten degrees angular scales. The amplitude of the detected signal cannot be easily…
Polarized Galactic synchrotron emission is an undesirable foreground for cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments observing at frequencies $< 150$ GHz. We perform a combined analysis of observational data at 1.4, 2.3, 23, 30 and 33 GHz to quantify the spatial variation of the polarized synchrotron spectral index, $β^{pol}$, on $\sim3.5^\circ$ scales. We compare results from different data combinations to address limitations and inconsistencies present in these public data, and form a composite map of $β^{pol}$. Data quality masking leaves 44% sky coverage (73% for $|b|> 45^\circ$). Genera…
We present a method of cross-calibrating the polarization angle of a polarimeter using BICEP Galactic observations. \bicep\ was a ground based experiment using an array of 49 pairs of polarization sensitive bolometers observing from the geographic South Pole at 100 and 150 GHz. The BICEP polarimeter is calibrated to +/-0.01 in cross-polarization and less than +/-0.7 degrees in absolute polarization orientation. BICEP observed the temperature and polarization of the Galactic plane (R.A= 100 degrees ~ 270 degrees and Dec. = -67 degrees ~ -48 degrees). We show that the statistical error in the 10…
The Internal Linear Combination (ILC) method has been extensively used to extract the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy map from foreground contaminated multi-frequency maps. However, the performance of simple ILC is limited and can be significantly improved by heavily constraint equations, dubbed cILC. The standard ILC and cILC works on the spin-0 field. Recently, a generalized version of ILC is developed to estimate polarization maps in which the quantity $Q \pm iU$ is combined at multiple frequencies using complex coefficients called Polarization ILC (PILC). A statistical moment …
We revisit the cosmological constraints on resonant and non-resonant conversion of photons to axions in the cosmological magnetic fields. We find that the constraints on photon-axion coupling and primordial magnetic fields are much weaker than previously claimed for low mass axion like particles with masses $m_{\rm a} \lesssim 5\times 10^{-13}\,\text{eV}$. In particular we find that the axion mass range $10^{-14}\,\text{eV} \le m_{\rm a} \le 5\times 10^{-13}\,\text{eV}$ is not excluded by the CMB data contrary to the previous claims. We also examine the photon-axion conversion in the Galactic …
We develop a possibility of generating tensor non-Gaussianity in a kind of anisotropic inflation, where a $U(1)$ gauge field is kinetically coupled to a spectator scalar field. Owing to this coupling, the coherent mode of the electric field appears and softly breaks the isotropy of the Universe. We compute the bispectrum of linearly-polarized tensor perturbations sourced by the gauge field and find that it is strongly red-tilted and has distinctive statistical anisotropies including higher-order multipole moments. Interestingly, the tensor bispectra with the specific combinations of linear pol…
(Abridged) We have conducted a total intensity and polarization survey of the Galactic plane at 6 cm using the Urumqi 25 m telescope for the Galactic longitude range of 10 deg<l<60 deg and the Galactic latitude range of |b|<5 deg. Missing absolute zero levels of Stokes U and Q maps were restored by extrapolating the WMAP five-year K-band polarization data. For total intensities we recovered missing large-scale components by referring to the Effelsberg 11 cm survey. Total intensity and polarization maps are presented with an angular resolution of 9.5 arcmin and a sensitivity of 1 mK and 0.5 mK …
We analyze the Southern Sky emission in linear polarization at 2.3 GHz as observed by the S-band Polarization All Sky Survey S-PASS. Our purpose is to study the properties of the diffuse Galactic polarized synchrotron as a contaminant to CMB B-mode observations. We study the angular distribution of the S-PASS signal at intermediate and high Galactic latitudes by means of angular power spectra. Power spectra, show a decay of the spectral amplitude as a function of multipole for \ell<200, typical of the diffuse emission. Spectra can be approximated by a power law C_{\ell}\propto\ell^{alpha}, wit…
Recent measurements of Galactic polarized dust emission have found a nonzero $TB$ signal, a correlation between the total intensity and the $B$-mode polarization component. We present evidence that this parity-odd signal is driven by the relative geometry of the magnetic field and the filamentary interstellar medium in projection. Using neutral hydrogen morphology and Planck polarization data, we find that the angle between intensity structures and the plane-of-sky magnetic field orientation is predictive of the signs of Galactic $TB$ and $EB$. Our results suggest that magnetically misaligned …
With the increasing number of experiments dedicated to the observation of the Cosmic Microwave Background, interest on the detailed properties of the foreground Galactic emission has risen. In particular the focus is shifting towards polarized microwave emission with the goal of detecting signature from primordial gravitational waves and inflation. This review describes the Galactic polarized and unpolarized emissions in the microwave range : free-free, synchrotron, thermal dust and anomalous emission.
We present a catalog of compact sources derived from the QUaD Galactic Plane Survey. The survey covers ~800 square degrees of the inner galaxy (|b|<4 degrees) in Stokes I, Q and U parameters at 100 and 150 GHz, with angular resolution 5 and 3.5 arcminutes. 505 unique sources are identified in I, of which 239 are spatially matched between frequency bands, with 50 (216) detected at 100 (150) GHz alone; 182 sources are identified as ultracompact HII (UCHII) regions. Approximating the distribution of total intensity source fluxes as a power-law, we find a slope of $γ_{S,100}=-1.8\pm0.4$ at 100 GHz…
We present estimates of magnetic field in a number of AGNs from the Spectropolarimetric atlas of Smith, Young & Robinson (2002) from the observed degrees of linear polarization and the positional angles of spectral lines (H-alpha) (broad line regions of AGNs) and nearby continuum. The observed polarization is lower than the Milne value in a non-magnetized atmosphere. We hypothesize that the polarized radiation escapes from optically thick magnetized accretion discs and is weakened by the Faraday rotation effect. This effect is able to explain both the value of the polarization and the position…
